Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2000 Ford Taurus

Daughter was driving down the highway and it was as if it went into neutral. no forward or reverse gears. there was no indication of anything about to happen transmission was not slipping or acting up prior to this. just glad there was not heavy traffic as this could have been a bad scenario. after research have found this is a very common occurrence on this vehicle. wondering why ford has not down something about it. bought a ford taurus because we thought it would be a very safe car for a young driver.

Transmission come and goes when it want to any equipment recalls on 2000 ford taurus

The transmission slips around 45, and when making a sharp left at any speed. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 ford taurus. the contact stated that the accelerator failed to respond to acceleration attempts intermittently. the contact also mentioned that the transmission was replaced and failed. the vehicle was taken to a mechanic. the mechanic stated that a new transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not further repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 40,000. the current mileage was 70,000.

The transmission is leaking and apparently lots of ford taurus have the same issues with faulty transmission. *tr

The brake lights not actuate and not be able the shift out of park is. *tr

Ran two errands. got back in car, started up, put in gear and nothing. made whirring noise, but wouldn't go into gear. could not back up, go forward, nothing. *tr

For no apparent reason, the car was driving fine one moment and then there was no drive in any gear. total cost for towing and repair was $3086. transmission shop said reason for failure was failed torque converter. transmission was rebuilt due to overheating. transmission cooler was full of torque converter clutch material. i have found 113 incidents of dangerous torque converter failure related complaints in this national highway transportation safety administration (nhsta) database from 1994 through 2005. for a complete discussion see http://www.taurusclub.com/forum/82-maintenance-repair/168651-2000-taurus-wont-shift-into-any-gear.html . these torque converter failures and their related torque converter pump shaft failures create extreme financial hardship on the taurus owners. additionally the failures occur without any warning whatsoever and thus present a hidden danger to all persons inside the vehicle and other drivers on the road. based on information found in the daaco transmission parts catelog (daacoinc.com), ford torque converters from the 4f50n, axod, axode, and ax4s transmissions seem to be of similar design. nhtsa campaign id number 12v006000 has already forced a recall for the torque converter used in the 4f50n transmission. see http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/recalls/recallresults.cfm?start=1&searchtype=quicksearch&rcl_id=12v006000&summary=true&prod_id=203181&printversion=yes why is nothing being done about this?

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 ford taurus. the contact was driving 30 mph when the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact restarted the vehicle and none of the gears were functioning. the contact called the manufacturer and filed a complaint. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 170,000.

I stopped at a red light and started to go when the light turned green and half way through the light the trains slipped out of gear and wouldn't engage until the rpm went down. this is only one of many times this has happened and after doing some research i'm not the only one. i hope ford does the right thing and recalls this problem before somebody gets killed and a recall would be nothing compared to a death and a lawsuit. *tr

Driving at 65mph with the cruise on. the rpm's goes to 6000 with no warning and no lights on the dash. i turn the cruise off and the rpm's drop. i now start to accelerate and the rpm's just go up and the car doesn't move forward. i just get the car off the roadway before i am rearended thank god. once on the shoulder of the roadway i try all gears with nothing but high rpm's. i sit on the side of the roadway for 1 hour with 18 wheelers going by just inches from me until a tow truck arrives. i did a search on google about this vehicle and there are many let me repeat many folks that have had the same problem. this vehicle only has 47,000 miles and is very well maintained. *tr

I have own a 2000 ford taurus se in which the transmission failed. my son was returning home from school when the vehicle decelerated then stopped. the vehicle's engine runs fine but it won't move forward or reverse when placed into gear. conversing with others i've discovered that this isn't an isolated incident. it appears to be a major problem that's being overlooked by ford. this situation is placing customers in dangerous situation, and my family was fortunate that this didn't occur on a highway or proceeding through an intersection. *tr

I was at a stop light and tried to drive and my 2000 ford taurus would not move. it has not shown any signs of the transmission slipping in the past. it has had 2 engines and an ac compressor which was covered under warranty. the warranty is up and no one can give any advice. i have heard this is an ongoing problem with the ford taurus. *tr

Since 2004, i had to have my engine rebuilt in 2009 the cost was 1,700, due to failure in the coolant system"probable cause was the coolant system eroded', and still have coolant issues, the repairs on the coolant was almost 700. after those repairs were conducted, i had my car towed to grand prairie ford, because my car would not change gears. grand prairie ford presented me a repair list stating at that point my car needed a new transmission and would cost another 3,000 to repair. i had my car towed to eagle transmission in irving, texas. the manager told me nothing was wrong with the transmission and in fact it was an electrical error and that the brain would have to be recalibrated. i had the car towed back to grand prairie ford to have the brain recalibrated. the car at that point drove off their lot just fine. grand prairie ford would not give me an answer on why they tried to tell me that i needed parts when in fact nothing was wrong with them. they did state they replaced the seat belts due to the recall. my driver seat belt disengages still while driving. i have to replace the tires several times a year due to suspension issues'ball joints, tire rods, struts, shocks', even after repairs were conducted it has been a continuing issue now costing several thousands. i have not been able to have this car inspected in 2 years due to emission control. i have replaced all of the defective parts and still the car will not pass. also this car was a split year model and has been a nightmare when replacing any parts. i do have every receipt for all repairs and parts that have been bought for this car and the falsified statement from grand prairie ford and a letter from eagle transmission to prove this statement that i have made today is true. however, i still have a car that i can not drive because it would be illegal and ford motor co. does not honor their vehicle. *tr

Transmission (automatic) 2000 ford taurus, placed in reverse after repair for fractured coil springs (warranted) were replaced ,the vehicle shuttered while slightly braking now ford dealer handing me a bill for over $2,000.00 , vehicle ran and drove great before this repair (of course they said it was completely separate) please help i've read other reports of incidents. *tr

Transmission problem: i have had my 2000 ford taurus for only 3 years and the car's transmission is no good! the exact mileage on the odometer reads 48,143 miles. i feel that i have been sold a lemon. my husband was driving our car on 10/7/07 while on our trip to atlanta, georgia and the car broke down in the middle of a major highway - jimmy carter boulevard. his life was in danger because another passenger's car almost crashed into the back of our vehicle. the car was running and suddenly stopped. the car note will not be paid off until december '2008. i feel that there definitely needs to be a safety recall on this particular ford model car. i feel that i will need to make a television appearance on consumer report and make the public aware of this problem. *tr

2000 ford taurus se ffv wagon. strong shudder when in stopping in reverse backing out of parking lot. took to dealership and was told "something" inside the transmission is failing. quoted $3000 for transmission replacement. vehicle has 70,000 miles on it very premature for transmission failure. *tr

My 2000 ford taurus transmission is not working. the car only has 45,567 miles on it, and are the original ones as checked by car facts. one day as i was driving down a major highway in atlanta, georgia my vehicle stopped in the middle of ongoing traffic. if i didn't turn on my hazard lights and lift the front hood on my vehicle, i could have been hit, injured or killed. i have heard numerous people stating that their ford taurus has transmission problems. so, why has the manufacturer not recalled this car? the only warning i had was the day before when fluid leaked from under the car hood. i am very upset because i always get my vehicle maintenance and get oil changes every 3,000 miles. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 ford taurus. when driving below 65 mph, the vehicle fails to accelerate properly. the failure occurs at least four times per day. the contact also stated that the transmission is leaking. she stated that the 1999 ford taurus has safety recalls for the vehicle speed control and power train automatic transmission cooling unit lines. the contact would like the safety recalls to include the 2000 ford taurus. the purchase date and recall numbers were unknown. the current mileage is 115,000 and failure mileage was 100,000.

Noticed within last 2000 miles that the transmission would slip and jerk when driving up steep grades or sharp turns, when it would attempt to downshift from 3rd to 2nd. it failed completely last night while driving home, fortunately we were only 3 miles from our home. now it will only go 25 mph and has a burning odor. it has 103k miles and the auto trans was serviced (filter/fluid changed) every 35k miles. we will get an estimate for the repair/replacement, however i suspect a bill from $1500-2200 is in order. all the news i heard about ford automatics is now substantiated....this is the last ford for us period. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while turning around in the driveway, the gears would not shift. this happened without warning. the dealer was alerted. updated 12/1/20006 - the shifter cable broke. *nm

Traveling at 70 mph on the interstate, the car just stopped accelerating when pushing the gas pedal. the transmission had simply shut down. the transmission had given us no problems before this time. we brought it to a transmission shop, the torque converter had to be replaced. the cost was $1100. the owner of the shop says he gets in 2 taurus' a month with the torque converter stripped out. he replaced it with a higher quality torque converter. we contacted ford, and explained that the car only had 56, 000 miles on it and that a transmission should not fail after only 56,000 miles when it has been maintained and taken care of. ford refused to help in any way at all. they were not concerned that we were left stranded on the side of the interstate after dark, with no warning that anything was wrong. they did not care that our safety had been compromised because of a defective product that ford made. *nm

Having trouble with shifter cable on this car, after putting car into i thought was park, the car drifted and the brakes had to be applied. the bolt fell out and the car would not start. this should be looked into asap and then recall said item, this is a serious safety matter. *jb

Transmission failed at 42000 miles

Dt: while driving on the highway the consumer slowed down and then pressed the gas to accelerate but the vehicle revved and then the vehicle stopped on its own and would not go into gear. there was no forewarning lights that came on the dash board. this happened on september 19, 2005, had vehicle towed to the dealer, they said the transmission needed to be replaced, and they were going to charge 1300.00 with the extended warranty applied. *ak

Dt: the contact stated the vehicle was making a chattering noise when putting it in reverse. she took the vehicle to a local mechanic, they said there was a torn lip seal on reverse accumulator due to a defective cut on transmission channel plate. she contacted the dealer, and they did not offer a free remedy. *ak updated 11/30/05. *jb

The transmission in my 2000 ford taurus suddenly failed as i was leaving a business establishment and was merging into traffic of a 4 lane highway. there had been no warning that there was a potential problem of any kind. after having my vehicle towed to a reputable repair shop, i was informed that the transmission had failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle has a little over 52,688 miles.

2000 ford taurus with 4 recalls and a bad transmission at 70 miles i cant afford to get it out the shop at 2100 dollars. *jb

Transmission failed, making it difficult to change gears.*ak

While trying to shift automatic transmission from park to drive the tranmission cable broke causing the vehicle not able to shift back into park.*ak

While waiting for the green light at stop sign automatic transmission failed. towed vehicle to dealership, who indicated the need for a new transmission. *ak transmission (gear) *tc

Combination metal/rubber transmission cooling lines rotted out spraying hot transmisiion fluid through out the engine compartment and onto the hot engine. this failure on my 2000 ford taurus wagon with 77,000 miles was a complete surprise as my previous car was a 1992 ford sable wagon that i sold with 395,000 miles on it and all the major oriiginal components in good working order. i just realized what the difference was. the 1992 sable transmission cooling lines were all steel, not a combination of steel/rubber as in my 2000. the quality has been lowered to save money. fortunately, i was near my repair shop when the transmission started to die from the loss of fluid and the smoke started coming out from the fluid on the hot engine and exhaust. a little earlier and the car could have died on me in fast moving heavy rush hour traffic on on i-684. the rotten lines were subsequently replaced at a cost approaching $400 for parts/labor. it took 6-quarts of transmission fluid to replace what was blown out! *ak

Second request for reimbursement for safety recall repairs involving 2000 taurus. *mr the gear would not move out of park, the consumer had to put a high effort into taking the vehicle out of reverse. there was a concern with the brake light switch. the consumer requested reimbursement for repairs. *sc

The consumer stated that his vehicle would not change gears. he had a private mechanic to look at the vehicle and was told that the cable gear was broken. *nm

Strong vibration in the front end. replaced front driver's side wheel hub/ assembly @ 42,xxx miles by ford dealer (sept. 2003) and dealer heard light noise from the passenger's side at the time. noise and vibration returns and driver's side wheel hub/ assembly and half shaft replaced by ford dealer @ 50,xxx miles. passenger's side wheel hub/ assembly replaced by owner @ 50,xxx miles with some popping noise still possibly coming from cv joint in passengers side when changing directions with the wheels turned.

I was driving my 2000 ford taurus se home. at the intersection of columbia and meridian roads south of meridian, idaho i pulled out from columbia and turned north onto a busy meridian road. i heard a clunk and i thought the car had popped out of gear. i coasted to the side of the road and found the car would not go in any gear except reverse. i felt fortunate that i was not rear ended because of the amount of traffic that day. i had the taurus towed to aamco transmission. their diagnosis was transmission failure and i had them repair the transmission which included a rebuilt torque converter, new bands, sprag clutch/low clutch, rear sun gear & drum, boost valve, pressure control solenoid, assembly set, filter and fluids. the mileage at the time of the failure was 61,841 and the bill came to $2,162.90 less $100 because i had a coupon. my car has the axod type transmission. ford has a 36,000 mile warranty so this was not covered however i think this was much to soon for a transmission to fail. i had the transmission serviced before the recommended specifications. thank you, [xxx]. *ak information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

While driving 5 mph front passenger spring/struts/axle snapped and failed. consumer managed to pull over, and had the vehicle towed. dealership was in the process of repairing the problem. *ak

Brake light and shift interlock failure had been recalled once and 'fixed' in 2002; switch failed again and replaced again. *la

The consumer was unable to turn the key in the ignition switch, and to shift the transmission out of the park position. *ak the brake light had become inoperative. the brake lights had come on and stayed on after wiggling the brake switch, it started to work (for 6 months), then on another occasion, the consumer's wife attempted to start the ignition switch and it locked after many attempts and was able to start, but the transmission was locked in park. *scc *jb

My 2000 ford taurus was out of warranty (53,000 miles) when the transmission and torque converter had to be replaced. i wrote to william clay ford, jr. office and was told in a nice way "too bad so sad" it's out of warranty. and people wonder why its so difficult to stay loyal to american products? the foreign vehicles are warranted 5-10 years, we must know ours are only good for 3 years and only warranty them for 3 years. i had hoped to get at least 1/2 of my $2,000 bill reimbursed. no chance of that. between what i owe and just put into the car, i'm in a no win situation. in one year this new transmission will be out of warranty. do i dare keep the junker ford? *la

Purchased a 2000 ford taurus in 2001 with 22,479 miles, now has approximately 43,000 miles. on sept. 27th, when wife of the i was backing up out of a parking space the steering wheel began to vibrate and stopped backing up. it took about three attempts for the car to reverse successfully. i took the car to the dealer and concluded that the damage was caused by the o-ring seal when inspected; in addition, the dealer found damage on rear piston, torque converter, and four other parts of the vehicle. i am seeking reimbursement from ford motor company for the replacement and/or repairs of the damaged components of the vehicle. *la

While driving the vehicle's fuel pump failed. as a result the engine stalled and the vehicle was almost hit by passing 18 wheeler. *nm the vehicle's transmission valve body failed while the vehicle was still under a 32000 mile warranty. *nm

While traveling on the highway and without prior warning applied the gear in drive and vehicle went into reverse, causing an accident. *ak

Main problem is the transmission....in reverse it starts to buck and grind; motor mount also failed

Problems with brake lamp switch went out on 2000 ford taurus. *mr the brake light had gone out which was a recall item. the brake lamp switch had gone out again and the consumer discovered the vehicle would not go out of park into drive but was finally able to get it into neutral and then into drive (g2). the consumer was unaware the brake light was out, which was the third brake light switch in less than three years. the consumer requested a refund. there was noise which had come from the blower motor, and the fuel gauge acted erratic and the fuel pump was replaced. *scc *jb

The transmission made a whinning noise. the vehicle was transported to a dealership, and the consumer was told a new transmission was needed.*ak ph *jb

The transmission shut down while crossing a busy intersection. the transmission now works only in the reverse gear. *nlm *cb *nlm

The transmission failed to shift properly. while the vehicle was under warranty, the dealer stated there was no problem, however after the warranty expired, the dealer stated the transmission needed to be replaced. *jb

The transmission was replaced 3 times. the last time the transmission light illuminated, the dealer stated there was an internal problem with the over drive. *jb

When the vehicle was in park, the gear shifted into reverse and caused and accident. *jb
