Drivers side front coil spring broke and ruptured the tire. i bought the car in california and moved to new england 10 years ago, so it has been subjected to road salt. i called ford. the representative informed me that there was no recall on this vehicle. i read that there had been a recall on the 1999-2000 ford taurus for this precise problem. it is very possible i may have the same problem with the other coil springs while driving and not as in this occasion while the car was parked in my driveway. ma 10/8 ....updated 11/13/15 *bf *cn

Car had not been driven for a month or two. after starting it one day in early march, owner heard spring on the front, left strut pop and break. the car was not in motion nor had it been for quite some time. in an attempt to take it to a local ford dealership, the spring punctured tire. the set of four tires had been recently purchased by owner. owner had to pay for tow, brand new tire, and both front quick struts for vehicle plus labor costs. there was a recall issued on 7-15-2004 regarding installing panels to protect the tires from the exact type of damages incurred. dahl ford dealership stated the recall did not apply to vehicle's specific vin, so, they would not put the panels in nor replace damaged components at no charge. owner advised dahl ford that this recall was sent from advance auto parts online garage services, so, it cannot be too invalid. owner also was told by employees of a local meineke car care center that the issues for the car should be covered under the recall. ford motor company refuses to acknowledge that the vehicle has been registered in one of the states where the damage to struts and springs can occur--from road salt--and owner spent close to $800 remedying a problem that should have been covered under the recall. the vin does not indicate that the panels were ever installed at an earlier date, and the lack of doing so caused the exact type of issue outlined in recall number 04s17. *tr

Catastrophic failure of driver-side front spring during a turn on residential streets, causing temporary loss of control and near collision. ejection of broken portion of spring caused no injuries nor damage to tire of vehicle in question; however, other vehicles passed over resulting debris and drove on, possibly suffering tire damage that was not immediately apparent. evidently, ford has acknowledged a problem with these front coil springs, issuing a recall, but has failed to extend it to cover all failures. the incident described herein demonstrates that the condition is clearly a safety issue.

I was driving to work when i heard a large clunk in the back of my car. i assumed that it was just me hitting a branch. the sound continued, but i wasn't that far from work so i kept driving. my car started to shake severely and i had to fight to keep the steering straight, so i immediately went and pulled over at a gas station where i discovered a severe flat. i had my car towed to the car repair shop, where i work, to have the tire replaced. they showed me that the rear coil spring had punctured and dug a gouge along a third of the tire. it was very scary to see how badly the tire was damaged. i looked online and have seen similar complaints and wonder why someone hasn't done anything about this. *tr

On my 2000 ford taurus sedan, the right rear suspension spring has broken. fortunately, it did not puncture the tire, but my mechanic said it could have and that he had seen a number of other tauruses where that precise problem had occurred. a similar issue was identified with the front springs and a recall was issued to add protective caps to prevent a dangerous condition. in addition, ford replaced broken springs, although i believe this was a customer service choice by ford, rather than a condition of the recall. i reported the issue to ford, but thought nhtsa should be made aware of the issue as well. we live in the greater chicago area. *tr

My 2000 ford taurus rear spring broke yesterday. the tire was punctured and destroyed the tire. i can't believe there is no recall on these springs based upon the number of consumers who have had this same issue. not only was i about to take this on the interstate which could of caused a major crash, it would of also put my family at risk. ford needs to be held accountable for this problem that is wide spread among 2000-2003 ford taurus and sable models. *tr
I just bought a used 2000 ford taurus....i was wondering why my tires were screeching every time i drove, my tires bald badly within a week or two...took it to a mechanic he told me that the right lower control line was bent and that's why i really cant drive anywhere. i am very concerned about my car i need a vehicle to work and see my daughter... *tr

The rear coil springs on my 2000 ford taurus are rusted and broken. i wouldn't typically have a problem just getting this repaired, however my mechanic says he sees ford vehicles with the same problem all the time (around 3 a week). there has already been a recall on the front springs, and i read some progress was being made on the rear ones, however ford still has not recalled them. if this problem is so prevalent, and ford is already aware of problematic front coil springs, the rear coil springs should be investigated and tested further as well. *tr

2000 ford taurus - rear spring coils broken - it hasn't taken long to see that 1999-2002 ford taurus models have high rates of failure in the rear suspension due to corrosion of the rear spring coils. i just learned that the spring coils on my 2000 ford taurus have broken, damaging the struts and the walls of my rear tire. not only should all of them be replaced (approx. installed estimate is $700), but i was told this could cause a catastrophic accident if the coil were to puncture the tire at highway speeds. because there is an existing recall for 1999-2001 ford taurus vehicles for the coils in the front suspension, i would appreciate an explanation of the justification for front suspension recall and how that case differs significantly from the rear suspension, which has not yet been recalled. *tr
Cracked front and rear coil springs on a 2000 ford taurus. *tr
Rear right coil spring broke in two places. one jagged end was pushing its way into the tire causing a 3/16th inch groove in the side wall. fortunately it was not enough to puncture the tire. car has only 55,000 miles on it and has rarely been driven in salty road conditions. *tr
