We have classified the 89 complaints from 1999 Ford Taurus about VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL into the following categories.
Intermittently accelerator sticks, causing vehicle to surge forward unexpectedly. dealer has replaced the throttle body, and the problem still exists. manufacturer has been notified. *ak *ml
The taurus has experienced many instances of: 1) unwanted acceleration at slow speeds in heavy traffic. this is characterized by excessive "creep" from standstill, a shift to second gear with a sudden lurch forward. unable to maintain slow speeds without foot on brake. 2) no engine braking. the taurus will not slow down with at all when all pressure is removed from the accelerator....as if on cruise control. 3) excessive speed increase when driving down a grade, no matter how slight. driving on neighborhood streets, the car will accelerate by 15 mph or more with no pressure on gas pedal. this necessitates riding the brake frequently.*ak
While pulling into a parking lot vehicle suddenly surged and accelerated, and damaged three other vehicles. vehicle did not have cruise control. pedal did go to the floor during acceleration. vehicle was inspected and nothing could be found. *ak
While in stop and go traffic if consumer takes foot off the brake, vehicle will just take off, up to 1700 and 2000 rpm. consumer says it started out once a day, now it's allthe time. *ak
While vehicle is in operation it accelerates without warning while driving or sitting idle. has taken to dealer, but dealer is not providing assistance. please provide any additional information/copies of receipts for work performed.*ak
Cruise control failed to maintain set speed on downhill highway. as a matter of fact, the speed increased from 55 to 85. since it was a new car, and no other cars on the state highway at the time, i did not realize the increase in speed since there were open fields on both sides of the road. when i notified the seller, i was told that it is marked so in the owner's manual. my basic question is, "who reads the manual before actually having a problem?" i believe the words, cruise control" should not be used ssince the word control is misleading if the car gains speed on a downward slope. or at least, the seller should notify the purchaser with a big notation that this is so. the failure of this knowledge led to my getting a costly speeding ticket from the new york state police. *ak
Vehicle began surging and slight acceleration on its own when foot off of gas pedal. replaced alternator. two days later, service engine soon light blinks off and on when car idles rough and has no power to accelerate. dealership could not find out problem. took car back again 3 days later same problem. replaced pcm and fuel injector. two days later, again same problem occurs. dealership can't find problem.
While sitting at a light or a stop and applying the gas pedal, vehicle accelerated on its own. dealer can't duplicate the problem. *ak
On three occasions while slowing down to a stop and applying the brake pedal, vehicle would suddenly accelerate and cause engine runaway. consumer had to shift gear to neutral and wait until other vehicles were clear before shifting gear back to drive. as soon as gear was changed back to drive it caused the vehicle to burn rubber and take off. vehicle was inspected by dealer and road tested approximately a hundred miles and nothing could be found. needs nhtsa help or provide additional information on this matter. *ak
Consumer states vehicle will accelerate causing vehicle to jerk.*jb
While pulling into parking space with driver's foot on brake, vehicle surged forward and went to 5000 rpm. vehicle was previously driven for approx. 20 min. at highway speeds with cruise control active. *ak *ml
Unsure--but brake failure led to death of four, cruise control would not disengage, brakes to the floor, emergency pulled and car would not stop, went 320 feet before impact-not sure why, but want to inform others
Vehicle experienced sudden acceleration resulting in vehicle collision. yh
Sudden acceleration while driving on highway at 55 mph with speed control not engaged.. dealer notified, and informed consumer that speed control cable was found to b e broken. can nhtsa give addtional infomation on this matter. *ak
Vehicle does not slow down when accelerator pedal is released on highway. car will accelerate when going down hill. this happens with and without cruise control. when cruise is set to 65 mph car will accelreate to 90 mph going down a hill. dealer says this is part of the design?? have to ride the brakes on the interstate. this is not safe and costly in brake jobs. *ak
Intermittently, the vehicle will surge/lunge forward while in gear when stopped in idle with the brakes applied, the vehicle has been taken to the dealership twice for this problem(4/22/99 & 6/10/99). the dealership was not able to solve this problem. *cj
While driving at lower speeds, vehicle will shift to a highr gear and give itself gas with no driver input. transmission snaps at low speed shifts, it pops and bangs. wipers activate for no reason intermittently. *slc
Possible design flaw when vehicle will not decelerate after taking foot of the gas pedal. however, either in forward / reverse, vehicle experience sudden acceleration which could result in collision. *yc
When coasting vehicle accelerated on its own. this has been an ongoing problem since february 1999. vehicle has been taken to the dealership 6 times for this problem. dealer stated there was nothing that could be done about this condition. *ak the vehicle also holds rpm when the driver takes foot off of gas at 30-40 mph, that it is the design of the vehicle to allow for the rpm's to maintain at a high rate when releasing accelerator pedal, consumer feels the problems are not related. *yh
While driving at 70mph going down a 5% grade, car will not hold in cruise control. car goes from 70 mph to 85 mph within seconds on steep grade. also, brakes are not strong enough to give good braking power. taken to 2 dealers, and they said it was a characteristic of the taurus. *ak
When driving in low speed the vehicle raced real high. consumer had to put vehicle into park in order for the engine to stop racing high. this is the third time that this problem has occurred, and vehicle has been into the repair shop once. dealer wants the vehicle back in the shop to do some testing. *ak
Brake pedal would go to floor when brakes were applied. was informed by mechanic brake adjustment was needed. brakes were repaired. since then, problem reappeared. also, cruise control would be set at a certain speed, but vehicle would accelerate at a higher speed; and right side seat belt fails to retract back to original position. *ak
The vehicle in front stopped short. had applied brakes quickly. abs brakes locked up. vehicle accelerated after the brakes were applied. rearended vehicle. upon impact, the air bags failed to deploy. *ak
While driving and taking the foot off gas pedal, the vehicle does not slow down as it suppose to, and may cause a crash. dealer said its the characteristic of the vehicle. please provide further information. *ak
