We have classified the 14 complaints from 1999 Ford Taurus about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
Was driving and all of a sudden the speedometer started jumping around, when i stepped on the gas the rpm's reved up high. i stopped at the stop sign and the car accelerated by itself into the intersection i came close to hitting another car! i have had the vehicle speed sensor replaced twice already and the transmission replaced . as i was driving it home the car hesitated in the intersection then jerked you can feel the pulsing of the car as it accelerates and deaccelerates. it is a safety hazzard
May 2016 i was driving my car and it felt like the transmission was slipping and the speedometer was all out of whack, the rpm's were going higher as i stepped on the gas pedal. i had the transmission replaced, the car has had more problems and was broke down for almost the remainder of the year. dec. 2016 had a new starter, power steering pulley, and serpentine belt replaced. car ran great for 3 days then the speedometer wasn't working and felt like the transmission is slipping or completely going out. i can't afford to repair this car i just finished paying off the $900 transmission job, plus i am still paying on the car! i am a single mother on disability with no money for repairs or another car. please help. *tr
The throttle cable broke and has to be replaced. i've noticed there was a recall for the throttle cable specifically but i cannot find information regarding this with the nhtsa. *js
Got a transmission leak, the transmission pan seals were replaced as they were wet and transmission was flushed and refilled. next day the car was still leaking transmission fluid brought it back to shop where the seals in the transmission pump were shredded. was replaced and again transmission was flushed and filled. get transmission back in car and o/d light is on. replaced the cables and siliniod pack. next day driving the car at 10 mph the car lost power and was like in neutral. parked car and shut it off. towed to mechanic and he said transmission is busted/broke and needs replacing. after reading here seems this transmission on this year of car is crap and needs to be recalled!! please make them recall this transmission and pay owners for there screw up!! this is crap i love my car and now this. maybe i go foreign. ps no federal bailout for them as they don't help there customers thats why there failing. good car bad transmission /customer support!!!!! *tr
I was going down he interstate with my 3 kids when my car stopped accelerating. it acted like it was in neutral, the engine was running and the rpm's would go up when i pressed on the gas pedal but it wouldn't accelerate anymore. i had to merge over 3 lanes of interstate traffic to get to the shoulder and luckily got to stop before we went over a bridge! i had it towed to a shop and they just called to tell me it is the torque converter and they just replaced one a few weeks ago. i looked online and this seems to be a common problem with this car. *tr
Transmission failure. no warning. driving on the highway at 60 mph and it was like the transmission went into neutral. the california highway patrol had to stop all north bound traffic on i5 in los angeles so the tow truck can move the car with the whole family to safety. we couldn't even open the car door. *tr
A minor slippage in the transmission became a complete transmission failure in less than a mile. no power to any gears, had to be towed. only repair options presented were new/used transmission, ranging from 1500-3000 in price, even though the nature of the failure was known by the dealership and the other mechanics i spoke with. otherwise, good car, but now it sits in my driveway. i would like the transmission repaired/replaced reasonably or for free given the complete and total, sudden failure. *tr
A 51 point inspection done on a 1999 ford taurus i purchased that had the following safety issues: cracked brakes, loose pinion rod, transmission, steering wheel off center to name a few items. required a flushing, oil, etc. i had to pay out of pocket to have most of these items repaired or replaced. some old parts are available, but i also have documentation to support my complaint. i have not had the transmission fixed due to funds. these items are a safety issue and could have cause a major accident. *tr
Automatic power-train. speedometer stopped working ,car would not shift and heater core needs replacement . was advised by mechanic that shift solenoid needed replacement. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 ford taurus. at 43,400 miles, the automatic transmission was rebuilt at the cost of $1,400. within a year, it had to be rebuilt a second time at no charge. on september 22, 2008, the transmission was rebuilt for the third time at 53,600 miles. the repair shop stated that the transmission was defective and needed to be completely replaced. while driving various speeds, the transmission skips second gear and the vehicle jerks often. the contact does not drive on the highway, only in town. she noticed that the vehicle is at 5,000 rpm when driving. the accelerator pedal is extended to the floor, but the vehicle only accelerates between 5-10 mph. the vehicle speed sensor also had to be replaced. the contact retrieved her vehicle from the repair shop on september 24, 2008. the failure mileage was 56,408.
Tl*the contact owns a 1999 ford taurus. while decelerating to 25 mph, the vehicle shut off. the vehicle would change gears and drive in reverse, but it would not drive forward. the vehicle had to be towed to a mechanic and he stated that there was internal transmission failure (code p0401egr) and suggested that the transmission be overhauled for $2,500. there were no warning indicators present before the transmission failed. the powertrain was unknown. the current and failure mileages were 125,000.
Problem went from bad to worse within 6 days. i took the car to 5 car mechanics including the ford dealership. all agreed that the problem is major mechanical failure within the transmission. repair would require the replacement of the transmission or overhaul. no crashes or injuries resulted from the failed transmission. *nm
Dt: the contact stated the transmission lurched forward. an extended warranty was purchased. however, the transmission was not covered. the dealership has been contacted, but no repairs have been made. *ak
Transmission failure while traveling at 65 mph on interestate. the transmission shifted roughly while in overdrive, causing the engine to race and bog down. service engine soon light came on. estimated cost of repair is $1600.00. this occured even after the lube tube was replaced by ford as part of a recall program.
Dt: consumer called in regard to a recall 04m04 he received in 08-2004 regarding corroded coil springs, causing a ruptured tire which could result in an accident. the remedy was to make a shield and to notify customers when this shield was ready. on 12-30-04, vehicle was in an accident but no one was injured. he had the coil springs replaced. in 1-05, consumer received another recall #04s17, explaining the delay in getting these shields prepared. in 05-2005, he received a letter stating the parts were available. he contacted the dealer who said they would not fix the recall. ford said they would not pay for it either. neither would reimburse him for the repair work he already had done. also, transmission on went out after the coil springs were replaced. he felt that transmission problem was due to the accident that occurred in 2004. *ak
While going through a very busy intersection at rush hour, my 1999 ford taurus just stopped. it will only operate in reverse. the car has just under 50,000 original miles. there has to be some defect for a vehicle to have this kind of problem with such reasonable miles.
Transmission failed! ford seems to know about this problem and wants to do nothing!*ak
The car has 84,000 miles, no warning signs. i had just got off the interstate and was stopped behind another car. when i started out i heard a thunk and the transmission wouldn't work.the car is now at the ford garage and the cost of a factory rebuilt transmission is $2500.00.*ak
Consumer stated that transmission jerked. but it had been doing this since purchase of the vehicle. he mentioned this to the dealer from whom he purchased the vehicle . took vehicle to another dealer, and they put a strainer in the transmission, but it did not help the problem. consumer was told that this was a pos manufacturer's defect.*ak
Since we purchased the car new it has lurched forward when being started. the transmission has had a hard time shifting, reving the engine up, then jumping into gear. we have had it back to the dealer several times for various problems. recently the transmission has been making noise and shifting badly. on a trip we found that it was low on transmission fluid although it hadn't leaked. we replaced the fluid and started driving home, checking the fluid several times. we looked in the reaarview mirror at one point and saw smoke coming out the back. fluid had leaked on the engine and exhaust. we also discovered small drops of fluid on the back bumper of the car. when we got home, we parked the car, still no leak when sitting still. i backed the car up to take it to the dealer to be checked but when i put it in drive it won't engage in any forward gears. i then tried going backward again, nothing. i t has died. i called the dealer and stated i believe this is a ford defect, especially after reading all the problems they have had with transmissions. i have been told too bad. they will be happy to replace it at my cost. why would i want another bad transmission. *ak
Rear axle on the passenger's side broke while driving 30 mph. dealer/anufacturer were notified. *ak
The transmission line fittings that connect the transmission cooling lines to the radiator failed. this caused the tranmission fluid to leak out causing the transmission to jerk and shift erractically. both fittings that connect the transmission cooling line to the radiator and one transmission cooling line had to be replaced.*ak
The transmission on my 1999 ford taurus gave way unexpectedly while i was driving the car down my road. it just stopped right in the middle of the road. if i had been going at a high rate of speed on a major highway, this could have caused an accident. *ak there had been no warning sounds or lights to indicate that there was any kind of problem . i had to have the car towed to aamco for transmission work, and paid $2200.00 in repair costs. i also damaged the front end of my car and my fence trying to roll the car into my driveway to get it out of the line of traffic.
While driving at 45 mph consumer noticed that vehicle was steadily slowing down to a stop. consumer pulled over to the shoulder and found that the vehicle would not go into gear. a mechanic examined the vehicle and determined that transmission was not working properly. a new transmission was installed. *ak
While turning into a parking place at the movie theater, the car suddenly seemed to have slipped into neutral gear, even though the gear indicator did not move from the drive position. i tried to change into reverse and drive and low gears but the car did not move. i had to have it towed and ended up needing $2,000 worth of transmission repairs. i bought the car(used-one previous owner) in aug 2001 and i still have an auto loan which i am paying, so this bill has devastated me. i have had several "major" problems with the car, but this was the worst.*ak
The consumer noticed smoke coming from under the hood while driving at 45 mph. the hood then burst into flames. the fire burnt through the paint on the hood, melted the front tire, dashboard and other front end components. the fire department hasn't identified the cause of the fire. the consumer feels it may be related to the recall 98v288000 for the transmission oil cooler line. the vin number is outside the remedy scope. *nm *nm
Transmission park rod broke without warning. this caused the vehicle to roll backwards down a driveway and hit a mail box. it continued down hill at 80 mph and went through a yard before coming to a stop. the shift lever was still in park.*ak *jb
The automatic transmission began to make a grinding noise, and then i was unable to shift gears. after a few moments, the transmission failed completely. i took the car to a shop in italy, and the mechanic actually told me he knew that this was a common problem with this model!*ak
Transmission issues not resolved. in august of 2002(65,445 miles), replaced a sensor and slipping transmission was fixed. in october of 2003 replaced transmission (86,150 miles) and problem is still occurring.*ak
The consumer stated that the original transmission failed at 50,000 miles and was replaced. a second transmission was replaced and it has currently failed. the consumer was given a 3 year/36000 miles warranty, whichever came first. also, transmission was leaking fluid. he took vehicle to the mechanic/dealer, and was told that he had bad hub seals that needed to be replaced replacing at the tune of $1200.00. the transmission had been leaking for 2 weeks. *ak
While driving at 35mph car would not automatically shift into the next gear. the more accelaration was attempted, the harder the engine pushed and the higher the rpms went without changing gear. took to dealership who have yet to look at problem.*ak
The transmission would slip occasionally but we did not think much about it until one night my huhsband was driving and he stopped at a stop sign and when he tried to go again he heard a popping sound and the car will not move forward! when the car was put in any drive gear you could hear grinding.
automatic transmission was replaced by the dealer and still same problem recurring, leaking.*ak
Swaybar endlinks are junk but dealer insists oem only way to go. aodx transmission kicks in and out. now experiencing p0500 code (faulty speed sensor)? rear brakes have always squeeled (even with oem pads) have had two apparent blowouts of pass side seal in rack.
Transmisson is causing vehicle to stay in neutral like gear while accelorating, high rpm's reached without changing gears or picking up speed. speedometor goes out while driving from time to time usually during transmission failure. took to specialist who quoted $2,300 to fix now more if completely goes out. specialist stated it was the third 1999 ford taurus seen this year alone. *ak
A;ril 2002 purchase used 1999 ford tarus (odometer reading 70198. april 2003 transmission failed (odometer reading 82,719). replaced with cost paid by me (total cost $2,085, warranty $1,238, i paid $847). questioning service recall for possible failed transmissions and why dealerships did not repair when service recall bulletins were distributed.*ak
The shifter transmission cable broke, which resulted in the transmission being stuck in gear while driving. the consumer loss control of the vehicle. the dealer advised the replacement part had been modified from the original, and gave no further details. *jb scc
The transmission failed, without warning.*jb
At 66,666 miles transmission failed while driving. i went to make a right hand turn and applied gas and it just revved like it was in neutral. now any gear you put it in it just revvs. ford has been aware of this problem for awhile.
Consumer states while driving her auto it begun to make a lot of noise. she took it to the dealership to have it checked out, and was told that it was her transmission that was making the noise. consumer states she only has 25000 miles on her auto and the transmission should not be gone out. ph
Transmission is not working properly. vehicle has trouble switching gears, especially when switching into fourth gear. contacted dealer. please provide further information. *ak
I have had my car for 2 years and in that time i have had the transmission replaced twice and rebuilt once. everytime i have had it worked on it was because the car would not go into gear. i have also had to replace a speed sensor, o2 sensor, and a transmission turbo sensor. all of this has happened from 6-02 thu 10-03. *la
Transmission failed at 65000 miles. dealer notified. please provide additional information.*ak
While driving 35 mph consumer applied accelerator, speed did not increase. consumer coasted to side of road. then, had vehicle towed to dealer. transmission had to be replaced.*ak
While in park, vehicle will not go into reverse or forward. dealer notified. steering column was discovered to be broken broken.*ak consumer stateed that the transmission cable broke, while in park. *scc
My husband and i had the vehicle for approximately 18 months when it started making a grinding noise. we took it to the dealership who said there was nothing wrong with it. we then took it to 2 mechanics. just low on fluid, no other problems. we checked the fluid before we drove it after that. the levels were never low. one day on my home, i had stopped for a light on a hill. when the light changed, the car started rolling backward. i put my foot on the brake and put the car in park, then waited for the light to change again. the second time i tried, the car jerked and lunged forward. i told my husband about it when i got home and he called the dealership again. we checked the fluid again, no change. it will go into gear if the engine is cold. but once it warms up, nothing. this vehicle has been sitting in my driveway for 3 years, taking up space and collecting dust. the dealership insisted there was nothing wrong with it and that there were no recalls on the transmission. a third independent mechanic told us the transmission was fried. it will cost roughly $3,000 to fix it. my husband passed away and i refuse to put any more money into this piece of junk. i also refuse to make any more payments on it. i can't sell it because it won't move. ford motor credit will not release the title until it's paid for but won't come and get it. i can't take it to them. i want my money back, or i want it fixed. the dealership who sold it to my husband sold out to someone else and there is no record of us ever bringing it to them. now what?
Consumer states even when pressing on brakes, the vehicle will try to move forward or jerk. contacted dealer. *ak consumer states vehicle leaks oil in the hood area on the right side, also smokes and there is a noise on the right side when consumers foot is on the brake.*yd
There is a problem with transmission. transmission will not go into gear or at times will not move while it is in gear.*ak
Suddenly unable to shift into any gear. had to open hood to manually shift transmission to move car. no prior aggressive shifting, no warning symptoms of impending failure.*ak
We notified the dealer about 1 month after purchasing the car that we thought there was a transmission problem. told us nothing was wrong. transmission failed at 46,000. still wasn't "right" after rebuilt transmission. after our insistance, additional testing was done, speed sensor was replaced. car was speeding up on its' own. our claim is that the speed sensor was defective from the beginning causing the transmission to fail. *ak
