Why Does My Ford Sync Keep Disconnecting?

If you're a Ford owner, you might have faced the common issue of the Ford Sync system disconnecting occasionally. This could be problematic when you're in the middle of a call or listening to your favorite playlist, and suddenly, the connection gets lost. This guide aims to delve into the possible reasons and solutions to such a problem.

Cell Phone Connectivity

Your Ford Sync system is primarily designed to connect with your cell phone and use its features. However, these connections might often fail due to a multitude of reasons, resulting in frequent disconnections. For instance, your cell phone's compatibility, its audio control settings, possible malfunctions, or specific settings related to SYNC can cause such issues.

You might be wondering, how to tackle these problems? Well, the solutions are not as complicated as they may seem. Firstly, checking your cell phone's compatibility on the regional Ford website is a good starting point. In cases of malfunctions, a simple switch off, reset or removal of the battery can fix the issue. Also, remember to switch on the automatic phonebook download feature on SYNC and check security and auto-accept prompt settings relative to SYNC Bluetooth connection on your cell phone. Lastly, updating your cell phone's firmware can often resolve the issue.

USB and Media Issues

Another common problem causing the Ford Sync to disconnect is related to USB and media issues. These might be a result of a device malfunction, incorrect insertion of the USB cable, or due to the device's auto-install program or active security settings. It could also be because of device limitations, such as leaving the device in the vehicle during extreme temperatures.

Solutions can be as simple as switching off, resetting, or removing the battery of the device, using the manufacturer's cable, and correctly inserting the USB cable into the device and your vehicle's USB port. Furthermore, ensure the device does not have an auto-install program or active security settings, and avoid leaving the device in your vehicle during extreme hot or cold temperatures.

Voice Command Issues

Voice command issues can also cause your Ford Sync to disconnect. This could be due to the incorrect use of voice commands or saying the names of songs, artists, or contacts differently than how the system saved them.

By using the correct voice commands, and referring to the audio display during an active voice session, you can mitigate these issues. Remember to say the name of songs, artists, and contacts exactly as the system saved them. Also, try to avoid using special characters in titles or contact names as the system might not recognize them.

AppLink Issues

AppLink issues can occur if an AppLink capable phone is not connected to SYNC, or if AppLink-enabled apps are not installed and running on your mobile device. Sometimes, apps do not properly close and re-open their connection to SYNC, which might result in the app not being found inside the vehicle.

To solve these issues, ensure you have a compatible smartphone and that it's paired and connected to SYNC. Make sure you have downloaded and installed the latest version of the app from your phone's app store and that the app is running on your phone.

SYNC System Reboot

Lastly, if you're still facing issues, it might be worthwhile to try the System Reboot feature. To perform a reboot, press and hold the Seek Up (>>) button while pressing and holding the Radio Power button. Release both buttons after 5 seconds, and allow a few minutes for the reboot to complete. This often helps in resolving issues that cause the SYNC system to disconnect.

In conclusion, while Ford Sync disconnections can be quite a hassle, knowing their causes and possible solutions can greatly assist in dealing with them. Always remember, understanding the functionalities and proper handling of the SYNC system is the key.
