Recently reported STEERING problems on 2011 Ford Fusion

Power steering stopped working while in traffic. three children were passengers in the car at the time. the car became very difficult to control and steer. the car was in motion and in traffic and a rainy morning on the way to school.

After my husband passed away, his fusion was given to our grandson. the steering has now seized up and he is unable to drive the car. ford dealership said there is no current recall and referred to warranty. vehicle has not been fixed and is a danger for anyone in my family to try and drive. dangerous, dangerous situation. i will be contacting ford.

Power steering assist fault on 2011 ford fusion se. tri star ford has ran tests and states no present problems on 12/13/2017. i have time stamped photos and recordings of at least seven different times that it has happened. i was advised to record this, but would have many more if i had done so from the beginning. this has happened stationary, in motion in parking lots, pulling out on city streets and on the highway. i feel that it has put my life and the lives of others in danger. i would like ford to step forward and take responsibility for this issue before it is to late.

Took my car to get inspected for the power steering recall back in 2016 and was cleared. randomly i get the message " power steering assist fault" and it disappears every time i restart my car so i took to the local ford dealership a few months ago and found nothing. recently, the power steering message comes on more often. my car doesnt show any problem during the time the recall was sent but now, the power steering issue that was recalled is my major problem. my vehicle has been cleared of the recall list since i took it to the dealership and found no power steering issue at that time.is there anything i can do for ford to fix this issue now?

My son went to move put of his parking space and the steering was completely gone, and the brakes were also gone. we had the entire brake system replaced last year already as they went out when my 17yr old daughter was driving the car, that cost $2600 and now the it happens again along with the steering. the car has less than 90k miles on it and should not be doing this we had planned to sell this can but now we cannot as it is a danger to anyone driving it. from this site i can see both issues are known, so how is ford getting away with selling cars that are completely unsafe? when the brakes went for my daughter she was on a 45mph road but luckily she could pull in somewhere safely. with my son he was just pulling out of the spot, and he stopped the car finally, turned it on and off a few times and all was back to normal but this is unacceptable, the car is a danger to anyone in it r near it, as who knows when it will decide to lose the steering again? we won't use it anymore, but we don't know what to do with it. it is essentially worthless even though it is only 7yrs old and low mileage. village ford in dearborn fixed the brake issue last ywear on this car.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford fusion. while driving 60 mph, the power steering assist failed. the contact was able to slow the vehicle down and coast it onto the road shoulder. the power steering assist indicator illuminated after the failure occurred. the vehicle was towed to capital city ford (8623 east washington street, indianapolis, indiana 46219, (317) 898-0700) where it was diagnosed that the electronic power steering assembly and power steering assembly needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was contacted and stated that the mileage on the vehicle exceeded the option of having the power steering assembly replaced under warranty. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 152,000.

Sept. 27th 2017, ford 'fixed' my car, 79,332 miles. problem was a loss of power steering while driving. ford replaced steering gear and reprogrammed pscm. now a little over a year later, car is doing the same thing, 3x today, 10/9/18, once last week, twice 3 weeks ago. only 88,500 miles.(less than 10,000 from fix).

This is what is happening to my ford fusion 2011 but my vin # is not showing up as recalled - help!! electric power steering failure nhtsa action number: pe14030 components steering opened from: october 2, 2014'september 10, 2015 summary the office of defects investigation (odi) opened a preliminary evaluation to investigate complaints of the loss of power steering while driving. the subject vehicles are equipped with a rack mounted electric power assisted steering (epas) unit. some of the complaints alleged that the steering assist failed and resulted in increased steering efforts that contributed to a loss of control and in some cases a crash. the epas system was manufactured by trw automotive for ford and was designated as generation i. these units were first produced and put into vehicle production in july 2008 beginning with the model year (my) 2010 ford fusion and mercury milan. the system is comprised of a mechanical steering rack-and-pinion gear with torque sensor, electric assist motor, motor position sensor and a power steering control module (pscm). the pscm is self-monitoring and designed to detect faults within the system and can store diagnostic trouble codes (dtcs) if a problem is detected. there are 29 potential dtcs the system can detect. many of these allow the system to go into reduced-assist steering mode by using the default vehicle speed signal should the live speed signal be lost, if voltage to epas system falls below 10.7 or goes above 17 volts, the temperature at the pscm goes above 105c (221f), or if high friction is detected. some dtcs will cause the system to go into manual steering mode (no assist). on july 1, 2015, ford filed a defect information report (dir) identifying a safety related defect in trw gen i epas systems installed

I went out ine morning to start my car every thing was fine . once i was driving back to my residents my steering wheel locked up on me upon turning in. the power steering assist fault went off on the little screen in the dash! i am lucky that i was in my parking lot and not turning into a street when my car lockes up on me!!! i had my child in my car! i am now longer able to use my car because of this malfunction! my child has seizures and other medical issues that we have to go to appointments for! and i have now lost my job due to this! something needs to be done! something serious could have happened with my toddler in the car!

My alert symbols are just coming on and my steering control has changed. when i try to drive my car now losses power.

The power assist failed and unable to steer. it was a $2,000 repair and a search of the internet indicates other fusions from the same year were part of a major recall. based on vin mine was not. this does not seem fair or even make sense. i called ford and they will not offer refund or repair.

There is a recall #15s18 for a power steering component on my car with ford. that power steering unit is currently acting up. i found the recall and called ford. i was told that if ii had less than 150,000 miles on the car they would fix it. when i took it to the shop it changed to reprogram only then f t acted up again they would replace it. we both the car used in december of 2017. the previous owner had had the car n for this recall for reprogramming in june 2017. so according to the recall the unit should be replaced since the programming did not fix it. it states the car will be covered up to 150,0000 miles. ford is saying that the recall expired at 60,000 miles yet the car had over 60,000 miles on it when it went for there reprogram in june 2017. essentially, ford is not honoring this recall repair.

Sensor failure in the rack and pinion which shut down my power steering assist while i was driving. this was a precious recall on the vehicle.

Electronic power steering completely failed while in motion. ford had previous recall on same year and model vehicles (fusion, 2011) but for some reason not on my particular vin, ford did not offer assistance covering the $2,450 cost of replacement.

My daughter had her steering gear repaired/replaced under a recall and now it has gone out again...but they won't fix it cause they say she has miles over the warranty. to me, if same problems happen twice, maybe they didn't fix it right the first time. now she is stuck without a car and i am very frustrated. person at customer sevice says there is an open recall, but dealer says no>

Takata recall on my way home driving in the city the "service power steering" message popped up. i got home and parked my car like normal. the next morning as i'm leaving, it is incredibly hard to turn out of my driveway.

Tl* takata recall. the contact owns a 2011 ford fusion. the contact stated that the warning indicators illuminated for the service advancetrac, electronic stability control, and power steering assist fault. the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 16v384000 (air bags); however, the interim notice indicated that the part was not available from the manufacturer for an extended period of time. the vehicle was also included in two manufacturer service campaigns: 13n03(electronic throttle body extended coverage) and 15n01 (epas steering efforts). the contact was to check with the manufacturer to determine if the failure was related to the two campaigns. an independent mechanic diagnosed that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the dealer was not notified. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 150,000. vin tool confirms parts not available.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford fusion. while driving 55 mph, the steering wheel seized and became difficult to turn. the power steering indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to precision ford (945 n main st, lillington, nc 27546, (910) 814-2243) where it was diagnosed that the control arm needed to be repaired. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and stated that the warranty was expired. the failure mileage was 160,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford fusion. after starting the vehicle, the "power steering fault" message displayed and the power steering assist failed. the steering wheel became very difficult to turn in either direction. the failure was not diagnosed or repaired. the local dealer (sarasota ford, 707 w. washington blvd, sarasota, fl) and the manufacturer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. the failure mileage was 100,000. the vin was invalid. **tr updated 11/9/18*jb

Power steering continues to go out periodically ..error message says power steering assist fault. the was "fixed" a couple of years ago and now going out again and they say it is not covered under any warranty cause miles exceed 150,000. last time on expressway going over 60 mph. took it to dealer and they say it needs a steering gear..this should be on a recall . i feel ford is not being responsible for this and putting us in danger of an accident that could kill us or other. please help.

The power steering goes out without giving you any warning. it has happen to me several times since i had my car. it says (power steering advance now). i can keep driving, but once i turn the car off. the steering wheel locks. when i crank it back up, the steering wheel is locked and i cant drive it anymore.i have to call a tow truck and have it pulled to ford auto nation. what i'm trying to say is that this happens and there is nothing i can do about it myself. i never no when its going to happen again. when they do whatever it is that they do to my car, they tell me that it won't happen again. but it does. it is a scary feeling, when it happens.

On august 16th 2018. my 18yr son was driving when his power steering went. he could have been killed along with others. there was a recall by ford. but with restrictions. with in 10yrs ir 150kmiles what ever came 1st. my son's car did not qualify as it was just over the 150k mileage. the cost of the repair is over 2k....we are devastate. how ford can but such restrictions when my previous son & other's could have lost their lives. also how can a dealership sell cars when there is very harsh recalls. we love to buy ford because it is an american car & suppose to be dependable & reliable. i bought this car thinking my son was going to be safe. instead i bought him a death trap. thank you.

My wife and i gave this car to our daughter when she got her drivers license in 2016.since then there has been a recall on the airbags that has not been fixed because they are on back order. the temperature sensor has gone out and ford is aware that is a problem but will not recall, and now 3 times the steering has locked up on her with an error message that reads "power steering assist fault". in reading various articles there was a recall but for some reason my car having a 3.5 liter was not in the recall, not real sure what engine size has to do with power steering. fortunately all 3 failures occurred in our drive way while she was backing out and she turned the car off and started it back up and the car corrected itself. i am in fear for my daughters life at this point, even though she has 2+ yrs of driving experience who is to say that if this happens when she is driving down the road she will know how to react without harming herself or someone else. ford needs to own up and fix their defective vehicles ps. this ford only has 45,000 miles on it. ralph nader, we need you!!!!

Sometimes on start up there is no power steering. there is a warning light about steering malfunction. if the key is turned off and then re-started the steering comes back. the danger is if this happens while driving.

Lost of steering control while driving down the freeway due to failure of- electric power assist system.

Jenkins and wynne ford in clarksville tn has replace the electronic power steering twice already. vehicle was returned back to us on 8-9 aug after fixing it for a second time. within 24hrs electronic power steering went out again and returned it immediately to the ford dealership. now dealership is claiming the lower controls arms are bad and need to be replaced and is the cause of why the electronic power steering is going out. there has been no noticeable noises, clunks or anything to identify the issue being the lower control arms. ford is claiming the bad lower control arms are putting to much pressure on the electronic power steering control unit.

I took my 2011 ford fusion to the ford dealership in harlingen tx. they verified the vehicle was up for recall since it has not been repaired. the mechanics took the car in and repaired the car after 7 days of dropping it off. on day 7 they called me that it needed a tie rod which i purchased and delivered first hand. 2 hours later they called me that i had to pay $1,300 because the car was not up for recall and that if i didn't pay they would be putting my broken part back on and releasing the car to me. i went on to complain to the manager and they managed to take $500 out for the repairs they have done that were supposed to be up for recall. i waited 7 days to find out i was being charged for a service that was supposed to be free. recall number 15no1 and 15no2. i have recite and video of the confrontation. i had already wrecked the car due to the steering issues. i also repaired the damaged after the accident to later find out it was up for recall!

Upon starting the car and backing out of the driveway i experienced a loss of power steering assist. even with several attempts to turn the engine off and restart, the code is still there. there have been many cases of this happening online and a recall that my vehicle was not under in 2015.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford fusion. the contact stated that the power steering failed and the steering assist indicator illuminated. while driving, the steering wheel pulled to the right. the contact was able to keep the vehicle in the lane by applying force to the steering wheel. the contact was able to drive the vehicle home and it was later towed to vic valley ford lincoln (501 east daniel morgan avenue, spartanburg, south carolina 20304, (864)-583-3600). the dealer diagnosed that the power steering rear control arm was causing friction to the power steering system, which caused the system not to operate normally. the contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 15v340000 (steering) on august 11, 2018 by the same dealer. the recall repair did not correct the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 142,205.

The power steering in my 2011 ford fusion has been going out periodically. when this happens, i have to wait for the opportunity to make a wide turn because it's very difficult to turn the wheel. there's been several occasions when i caused traffic jams or almost got rear ended since the car behind me didn't expect me to take so long to turn. a lot of times the power steering goes out when i'm stopped at a red light. i can still drive the car to my destination locally using the streets but i fear that it will go out one day while i'm driving on the freeway. luckily it's usually only me in the car when it happens but i'm afraid that it might also happen when my kids are in the car. it's also frustrating because only i can drive the car because when it happened once when my wife drove it, she panicked and wasn't strong enough to turn the wheel. this time, she did have one of my children in the car. i had to go meet her and drive it home. i've been researching this issue and have found that thousands of vehicles with the same make, .model, and year have experienced similar issues yet only certain vehicles are part of a recall. my car is experiencing exactly everything that the recall says it would yet when i run my vin #[xxx] through fords database, my car does not fall under this power steering recall. which i find very disturbing. i've also contacted ford corporate and my local ford dealership and they just advise me that my vin # is not part of that recall. which is very odd. since my car is exactly what the recall describes. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

The car is parked on the curb so i'd started it up and was proceeding to turn it around in a driveway across the street when the power steering went out suddenly and i could barely turn the wheel. a warning on the dashboard said the power steering assembly had failed. after much effort, i pulled the car alongside the curb across the street and turned it off. i called the dealer and the man there said there was a recall on the vehicle for the power steering and he was 99% sure it would be covered but after i had it towed there, he said it didn't meet the criteria for the recall -- that the computer wasn't throwing certain codes so i had to pay $2,000 to get it fixed. i just have to trust he was being truthful about the no codes.

I had a recall on my car last year 2017. i took it to be fixed. they replaced the throttle body and power steering module. after having that replaced i later notice my car wasn't driving right. there was a whining noise and a noise coming for steering wheel. so i took my car back to have it check out.the guy said it will cost $130.00 for them to check my car. i asked if cost to check the part they replaced because my car was driving the same since they fixed it. it took less than an hour for them to tell me that there wasn't anything wrong with the parts that was replaced. now my car has been going down since. so june 30,2018 i took it to a mechanic for oil change and he told me that i should take my car to dealership to get rack and pinion check.he express to me that i should get it looked at soon because my wheel seem like it will lock. august 5,2018 i was driving the express way and almost lost control of my car. it kept swerving back and forward in and out of lane. i was trying to avoid hitting the car on my right side and hitting the brick wall on my left. i to brake on the expressway almost coming to a complete stop to get control of the car. i thank god there wasn't a car behind me. i had to replace the tail light several times. there a static noise coming from the center dash.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford fusion. while driving approximately 40 mph, the "check steering" indicator illuminated without warning. immediately afterwards, the power steering seized. the vehicle was towed to performance ford lincoln (606 nj-10, randolph, new jersey 07869, (888) 541-3927). the dealer stated that the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v340000 (steering) and the computer software was reprogrammed; however, the failure recurred three weeks later. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and provided the contact with case number: cas-156-284-19. the failure mileage was approximately 164,000. the vin was not available.

Power steering assist failure a/c fail defrost fail turns on & off by itself or just doesnt operate at all anymore tracadvance failure

I was driving the vehicle and lost power steering assistance. warning light came on and display noted that fault. parked the car, when i restarted it the problem went away. this could have caused a major accident had my wife been driving the car and entered a shape bent in the road. fortunately i was driving about 40 mph on a fairly straight road when the problem occurred. i checked and no recall has been noted on this particular vehicle, however it appears other 2011 fords including fusions have been recalled. i want this to be on record in the event there would be an accident due to ford's reluctance to take action of this serious problem. please note: i am not able to check the box for receiving recall alerts, but would like to receive them. thank you

I recently started my car after work and got a "power steering assist failure" alert while stationary. the power steering has not worked since that incident. it's incredibly difficult to make turns, especially michigan turn-arounds. being that it's electrical, the estimated cost to fix is $1700! i don't have $1700 to fix it, and i have no choice but to drive it around like this. i learned that there were over 400,000 recalls for related incidents, but my vehicle is not recalled. why? i also noticed that of the 1795 complaints on here, 759 of them are for steering issues. that's 42 percent! this is a disaster waiting to happen.

2011 ford fusion recall. i had the recall competed on my ford fusion for the steering gear. within 6 months, my steering gear locked up again while i was driving on the interstate. ford refuses to do another recall on this part. they said it is my responsibility to pay to have this done now since i have already completed one recall. they will not pay for 2 steering gear recalls. how is it my responsibility when apparently they didn't fix it right the first time.

I was driving on a city street turning left. on my way to pick up my son when my power steering went out and a prompt showed on my dashboard saying power steering assist fault.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford fusion. after refueling at a fuel station, the vehicle was started and the steering wheel seized. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the rack and pinion failed. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 125,000. *tt contact states vehicle was taken randy marion ford in statesville, nc. *tt

I was driving down the highway when the power steering went out. alarm sounds went off and power steering default appeared on the info system. had a hard time pulling off the highway. when i realized it was electrical steering i went online to find a way to fix the problem. i checked the fuses. fuses were ok. since i could hardly move the steering wheel trying to get off the highway i wasn't going to risk my life again or my fellow drivers on the highway by driving it back home. i waited for my car to be towed back home. you would think a car doing 70 mph would still be somewhat easy to steer right to get on the shoulder of the highway. it was not and took a good deal of muscle to turn the steering wheel right. if i was a older person or someone weaker this could have been bad.

My 2011 ford fusion's steering wheel completely gave out on me while driving on a highway in july of 2015. extremely dangerous situation. dealership informed me of an open recall and replaced the whole steering rack pursuant to ford recall number 15s18. fast forward three years later -- last friday, also while driving, my steering wheel failed and almost caused a crash. exact same errors. contacted two different dealerships, as well as ford, and all said they can't do anything about it -- that i would have to pay $2300+ to get it replaced. how can the steering rack fail me twice in three years? how does ford get away with making this a one time recall and doing nothing when the same thing happens again? it's absolutely absurd and horrifying. no car - especially not one that is a relatively newer model - just randomly has a steering rack failure in the middle of a highway. if i had crashed, i am guessing ford would have paid for the replacement.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford fusion. the contact stated that the steering wheel seized and an abnormal grinding noise could be heard. in addition, the steering warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was towed to covington ford (9101 martin luther king jr ave, covington, ga 30014, (770) 786-3432) for diagnostic testing and repairs. the diagnostic results were not provided. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 122,000.

Intermittent power steering failure. when backing out of my driveway, power steering locked up then was drivable. locked up again 66 miles later while backing up in driveway.. took it to team ford, $2199.00 to repair. over 400;00 was recalled in 2015; for same problem. why not mine?

I purchased this 2011 fusion sel 6 months ago, the carfax report listed everything as being checked out but no report about epas as having recall issues, no problems until last week when the outside temperature reached the 90's, when exiting the freeway and coming to a stop the steering and brakes started loud growling noise at low speeds, continued throughout city street driving as well with it remaining constant until the temp cooled off overnight as it didn't have problems when temp was back down in the 60's but has repeated the growling noise again several times once the temp's return in hot weather. went to the ford dealer and said the recall 15s18 has been closed and that my vin never was part of the recall notice, very frustrating that the 393,623 units effected that listed 2011-12 fusion's never included all vehicles as viewing all the complaints numerous other vehicles that wasn't included in the recall are having the same issues as those that were. received recall notice for the takata airbag possibly available in the 3 qtr and ford is allowing owners a rental unit up to $30 a day until the takata airbag parts are available for replacement.

Power steering would go out, but reset itself after turning car off and then back on. power steering finally went out completely while going down subdivision road. some 2011 fusions were recalled for the same exact problem and fix. good thing no worries accident happened and the takata airbag was not deployed since that recall has not been fixed yet.... many other cars just like this one on carcomplaints.com. had issue fixed at barber ford inc in holland, mi 49423.

Driving 8 hours, 70 mph, on 92 outside temp day the car started making a thumping sound when breaking/steering simultaneously. steering became somewhat stiffer. the sound got louder as time went on, possibly due to extreme heat. wife was with me and we both became very worried because we were in atlanta 5 pm traffic. we made it home and i began an information search. i found that our 2011 ford fusion was included in a field service action 15n01. i spoke with the local ford service manager and was told that did not apply to the symptoms i described because there is no advance indication that the electric controlled steering is going out - it just goes out. ford's own report mentions this being possibly dangerous but downplays the concern by saying steering is still possible, just more difficult. i called ford customer service for some support but other than recommending a diagnoses and saying she is not a tech, offered no meaningful information. she did admit she would not want to drive a car with this condition existing. last, i tried to get information via live chat and when i sent the fsa number, i was actually blocked of my ability to question him and he ended the chat. frankly, i would like to hear the response of a ford management person to the question "would you allow your dearest family members ride in a vehicle that show frightening symptoms of a steering issue knowing the existence of the 'field service action' which is about the steering going out.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford fusion. when the vehicle was started, the steering wheel lost power without warning. the vehicle was taken to ray skillman hoosier ford (333 robert curry dr., martinsville, in 46151, (765-342-3673) where it was determined that there was no recall for the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to nhtsa. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 116,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford fusion. while operating the vehicle, the power steering suddenly failed and the steering wheel became very difficult to turn. during the failure, the message "power steering assist fault" displayed. the contact indicated that turning the vehicle off and back on would sometimes correct the failure. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the power steering module was faulty and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer and local dealer (bob sight ford in lee summit, mo) were notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v340000 (steering), although the failure was the same as listed in the recall. the failure mileage was 120,000.

My power steering system failed making the car unable to drive. this happened at 77,298 miles on it. my specific vin number was not included in the 2011 ford fusion recalls for the same problem for power steering failure.

Over 2 years ago, at start up, the power steering assist failure warning appeared. i couldn't drive the car. i took it to the dealer and was advised of a recall on fusions, but not on my vin. very frustrating! they reset the electronics and it was okay for only a couple of months. since then, i receive the warning several times a month... consistently. i found if i turn the car off and back on, it would reset and power steering would resume. however, on thursday, 6/7/18, it would not reset. i had to have the car towed and was advised still no recall on my car, it is out of warranty now, and it can only be reset once; i have to pay $1600 to change the rack. this is extremely disconcerting. this is the same problem as original concern 2 years ago and my car is outside of the recall.
