How To Clean Your Ford Fusion's Throttle Body?

How To Clean Your Ford Fusion's Throttle Body?

The Ford Fusion's throttle body is a critical part that aids in providing air to the engine's combustion chambers. It's instrumental in forming the right fuel-air mixture. When you step on the gas pedal, the throttle opens, allowing more fuel to flow into the engine's cylinders. How the throttle body functions largely depends on the volume of the air-fuel blend.

As your Fusion runs, the throttle body can accumulate grime and dust that enters it with the incoming air.

This build-up starts to settle on the body of the throttle, disrupting the regular function of this component. When the throttle body is severely gummed up, your Ford Fusion will show the relevant signs. Indications of a throttle body that needs cleaning include:

  • Fluctuating RPMs at idle;
  • "Hesitations" when you step on the gas pedal;
  • Reduced power and acceleration;
  • Inflated fuel consumption; power loss in the car.

If your Fusion exhibits these signs and you haven't cleaned the throttle body for a while, it might be the right time for a clean-up.

What do you need to clean your Ford Fusion's throttle body?

The items required for cleaning are quite straightforward and can be found in nearly any garage.

The essentials include:

  • Throttle body cleaner, or Throttle body and Air Intake cleaner (essentially the same);
  • Carburetor cleaner - can be useful;
  • A brush;
  • Rag(s);
  • A screwdriver.

It's generally advised to clean the throttle body around every 75,000 miles (121,000 km). This isn't set in stone as there's no exact schedule or rules, but periodic maintenance of the throttle body will certainly improve the performance of your Ford Fusion. If you start noticing odd signs - it might be time to give it a clean.

How to clean your Ford Fusion's throttle body?

You can clean the throttle body in two ways - either with or without taking the unit off the Fusion. This guide will present the method that doesn't require removing the throttle from your Fusion.

While this method is just as effective, it's simpler as it saves you from quite a bit of work. However, if your throttle body is particularly dirty or not functioning properly, fully removing and cleaning all its components might be a better option.

Disconnect the negative battery terminal

Start by disconnecting the negative terminal from the battery. It's a key step to de-energize your Ford Fusion and protect yourself from any electrical shocks.

Detach the air duct from the throttle body

Next, detach the air supply hose that runs from the air filter to the throttle body. Often, it's held in place with a clamp, but it could be attached differently. Ensure you disconnect it before removing.

Disconnect the hoses and sensors that are connected to the throttle

You'll find various wires and tubes connected to the throttle body - some are sensors, while coolant flows through others. Make sure you position these tubes vertically and plug them with a spark plug when disconnecting to prevent any fluid leakage.

Label all sensors and hoses

After cleaning the Ford Fusion's throttle body, you'll need to reconnect everything in its rightful place. If there are numerous wires, things can get confusing. Thus, label and mark everything you disconnect. This way, you'll know exactly where each part belongs when reassembling post-cleaning.

Apply throttle cleaner to the surface

Spray some throttle body cleaner on the throttle body surface. Allow it to sit and work its magic. If you've got stubborn build-up, a 3-5 minute wait should suffice for the cleaner to dissolve it.

Begin the manual cleaning process for your Ford Fusion's throttle body

Time to get your hands dirty! Start scrubbing the throttle body using a brush (opt for a soft one to avoid scratching the blade), rag, or cotton swab.

If the grime doesn't come off in the first round, don't sweat it! Reapply the cleaner and repeat the process until you achieve a shiny, clean throttle body devoid of any dirt or leaks.

Reassemble the entire system

Once you've finished cleaning the throttle body, it's time to put everything back together. Double-check to ensure everything's functioning correctly and there aren't any odd noises or signs suggesting otherwise.

How to adapt your Ford Fusion's throttle body

In the modern era of vehicles, like the Ford Fusion, where the throttle is electronic (controlled by an electric signal rather than a traditional cable), a specially designed throttle position sensor keeps track of the throttle blade's current position. Before the engine springs into life, this blade sits perfectly perpendicular at a 90-degree angle.

It fits snugly against the channel walls from top to bottom, preventing excess air from sneaking in. But over time, grime settles on the air channel walls or the blade itself. This grime hampers the throttle from fully closing, keeping it lodged in one place.

This position is interpreted by the sensor, and the Fusion's computer now takes this as the new 'normal'.

In other words, the throttle blade's neutral position, considering the layer of dirt accumulated on it, becomes the reference (factory) value. This is perfectly fine as it's factory-set and is crucial to maintain the engine's smooth operation.

But here's the catch - after we scrub off the dirt from the throttle body and restore the surface to its initial state, the Fusion's computer gets a bit confused.

There are no indicators letting it know that nothing is stopping the throttle blade from fully closing - the car's computer will still 'believe' there's grime and keep the blade in the remembered position.

This results in a gap between the throttle walls and the blade, permitting a sliver of air to slip through.

Therefore, the Fusion's computer 'believes' the throttle pedal is continuously pressed, even when it's not, and excess air gets channeled into the cylinders through the newly formed gap.

This isn't great news for the engine; it's constantly under strain, which becomes particularly evident at idle, where instead of the usual 800 rpm, it revs up to 1500–2000 rpm. This can lead to overheating and reducing the engine's lifespan.

That's why it's essential to calibrate the throttle blade back to the factory position after giving the throttle body a good clean.

The throttle valve adaptation process is pretty much the same for many Ford Fusion models.

Start by warming up the engine to its operating temperature, then switch it off and wait for about 5-10 seconds. Next, turn on the ignition and wait for 3 seconds. Following that, press the throttle pedal 5 times over a span of 5 seconds, and then release it.

If that doesn't cut it, it likely means your Ford Fusion's system operates slightly differently. The throttle valve adaptation procedure should be laid out in your Fusion's owners manual.

To Wrap Everything Up

Cleaning your Fusion's throttle body is a crucial maintenance routine as it prevents dirt build-up on the blade and the formation of gaps between the blade and the body itself.

Patience and precision are key during this cleaning procedure to achieve the best possible results.
