Problems with 2006 Ford Freestyle VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

My 2006 ford freestyle was accelerating when i had my foot on the brake at a stop sign. it does not gas when i have my foot on the gas pedal. it stalled a few times and when i have the car in reverse it accelerates without me even pressing on the gas. my wrench light was on in my dash as well. i took it to pepboys and was informed that my sensor was bad and i needed spark plugs and a vacuum hose..after spending $700, needless to say the problem with the accelerating still exists and there is also a humming noise while driving and the steering is very hard to maneuver. i took it back to pepboys and they said it is an electrical issue and i have to take it to ford to get it fixed. *tr updated 03/23/12 *bf

When i put my car in reverse it accelerates on it's own. i have almost hit a few cars now while in parking lots. my car has also done this while going forward but it seems to be worse in reverse. there has been a couple of times, while in reverse, where i have my foot pressed hard on the brake and the car almost doesn't want to stop; it just keeps trying to move. what are we supposed to do about this?

The vehicle has been accelerating all by itself and i have to quickly step on the brake to stop it. it has happened three times. the last time, i had 4 children in my vehicle on a very hot day and it happened as i was waiting to merge into traffic. luckily i was able to stop it but it was very scary. i brought the vehicle to a local mechanic who indicated that it could be the throttle body or transmission, which he indicated could be very expensive. upon researching the problem on the internet, i was shocked to see that a large number of other people are experiencing the same problem - some have even had accidents because of it.

Car surged forward after pulling into a parking spot pressed brake and car engine revved and moved forward and hit curb and caused damage to lower finder and right tire. had to replace tire on right front passenger side and finder still cracked. now car will rev up without pushing gas in drive and reverse up to 6 feet at a time then stall when brake is pressed. about ran over a child when they got out for practice. ford dealership said no problems were found and have issues with throttle body and said it might do the same thing and cost $800. now it does it all the time and also will lose speed when backing out on a road to take off will not get over 30 mph. very dangerous. *tr

My 2006 ford freestyle is having surging problems. every time while at a stop light, at turns, or when backing my car surges. it is very scary an i am afraid i am going to hit someone or runover someone. i was at drive through at mcdonald's today and my car surged and came inches from hitting a child. this has got to stop. after researching this i am not the only one having this problem. this is very scary and i am frustrated that this many people have had such a dangerous problem and it hasn't been addressed or recalled. this has to be taken care of before someone his hurt or killed because of ford's neglect. *tr

Have 2006 ford freestyle with 55,000 miles on it. it recently lunged forward while i was in driveway. and engine has been revving up for no reason what so ever. *kb

We own a 2006 ford freestyle. in 2008, at 36,730 miles we had the throttle body replaced because the vehicle lurched & the wrench light came on. problem fixed. however, 2011 @ 88,356 we had the car in again because it lurched and engine & wrench light would come on again, and it would lose power. if we turned the key off and back on, it would temporarily go away. they replaced an electronic sensor in the transmission. this was at a ford dealer. they had to call their mechanic help line & work on it several days to figure out the problem. apparently, that was not the problem, because it had to go back in two weeks later for the same issue. they claimed the new part was faulty and they replaced the sensor again. fast forward 2.5 months. we are in june @ 92,744. vehicle was again lurching, wrench & check engine light would come on and had a loss of power. this all seemed to happen when the engine was under strain/load: ac on high, turning the wheel. it would happen in reverse or drive. i had a foot on/over the brake - so lurching never caused any incidents. this time, i took it to my mechanic. he didn't believe me - because as i said - if you turned the car off, it would all go away until the next random time it happened. so, after 2 days i picked the vehicle up from him. it happened again 2 days later. i took it to autozone and had them plug it in to get the codes out of it - before i turned it off. i took the vehicle and the codes to my mechanic. he had the car for a couple days and was able to get it to behave as i described to him. he replaced the throttle body and it seemed to fix it. we took it on a road trip for 6,000 miles and there was no problem. it is now just over 100,000 miles and the warranty has now expired. until now - warranty has covered the bulk of the cost. about 2 weeks ago, there was one instance of surging but no other symptoms ...

Twice, in 100+ degree weather, after idling for a short time with ac running, i put the car in reverse only to have it lunge backward. thankfully i was able to control this with the brake. it continued to happen in drive until i reached my destination (fortunately a short distance, although traffic was heavy) and turned the engine off and let it sit for awhile. it has not repeated through the cool months, but i fear it will repeat if i am in the same conditions. as i live part of the year in arizona, that is very likely. it seems that this is a known issue with this car, hope ford isn't waiting for someone to die before they fix it. *tr

2006 for freestyle 120000 miles, i was backing up car engine started to race. had foot on brake not on accelerator. if foot was not on brake would have hit parked car behind me. backed up and had to keep brake applied to keep car from moving in reverse to quickly. car then stalled. i restarted and went into "safe mode". drove to automechanic unable to drive over 40mph. mechanic looking at throttle body as cause. *tr

While driving the cars rpms will accelerate the car, in drive or reverse, i must be aware so that i do not hit anyone/anything and brake. at times once i brake the car will turn off, i will get a wrench or engine or both. this can also occur while at a red light.

During the past month on several occasions the car accelerated unexpectedly, to the point of having to hold the brake. car stalled in traffic when starting from a red light, cannot accelerate over 30mph. the dashboard wrench and check engine light came on. when the garage checked they got an error code for the throttle valve, wrench light was on. problem seems to be worse with high temperatures outside, (85-100 f).this issue happens with no warning! why is there no recall!! this is a dangerous situation. *tr

When backing out of the garage in reverse, the engine revved wildly causing a big increase in acceleration backwards. thankfully i slammed on the brakes to stop (before i clipped the side of the garage) and put the car in neutral to see if the revving would continue...it did. for the next minute or so, the engine revved from about 800 rpms to 2500 rpms in neutral, with my foot on the brake....the engine acted the same way in neutral as it did in reverse (increased rpms = inadvertent acceleration). after a minute, i cautiously continued backing out and everything was ok then. other conditions to consider in your evaluation: -it was hot outside (100 degrees) -engine was warm from previously running errands -ac on -wheels turned slightly -two adults and 3 children in the vehicle at the time

Purchased a 2006 ford freestyle in april 2010 with 45,831 miles on it. the car is used for transportation to and from work, errands, and leisure. since purchasing the car, we have experienced unexplained surges in the engine resulting in the rpms to increase and a sudden jerking movement while in drive or reverse. the surges have become more frequent occurring on a daily basis during warm weather especially during the summer months. we have been worried about the car lunging into another vehicle while parking/backing out of a parking space or while waiting at a light or stuck in traffic on the highway. on 6-13-11 at 5 pm est, while on our way home from work, the car unexpectedly surged and moved forward into another car while we were waiting at a traffic light. we have researched online to see if any other freestyle owners have experienced this problem and to our surprise, there have been a lot of complaints regarding this issue but no statements or recalls have been made by ford. we have not been able to afford to try and have the throttle body fixed to remedy the situation. this is something we were not expecting considering the car only had 45,851 miles on it when we bought it last year. *tr

Both times this has happened, it has been very hot 100+ degrees outside, and the vehicle had been parked, idling for a few minutes (5-15 mins). upon putting car in gear, the vehicle engine surged. luckily the foot was on the brake pedal. while experiencing these problems, vehicle has died twice, and tends to do it more at low, idle only speeds, for example while parking or pulling out of the driveway. once, we were driving from out of town, and the vehicle was sluggish on acceleration, and never seemed to switch gears. we made it home, then let it cool, and it ran fine for several days. about a week later, having the same issues. going to take it into the ford dealer tomorrow and have them look at it, referencing the nhtsa investigation into the ford freestyles. *tr

on several occasions while i was driving in route to work or the grocery store, my 06 ford freestyle seemed slow and sluggish to respond as i would be waiting at a red light for the green. when the light did turn green and i would press the gas pedal to go, the car would shut off. a few times there were close calls as the car behind me would be unaware i was having trouble and almost rear-end me. when the car would cut off, i would proceed to restart the car and then press the gas to go. the car seemed to respond extremely slow like i would have the gas pedal pressed to the floor and would only be able to go 20 - 25 mph. on other occasions, the car would seem to lurch forward or backward (depending on if i had the car in drive or reverse) as soon as i would take my foot off the brake. after the 3rd or 4th time this happened, i took the car to a local shop who had to refer me to my local ford dealer. when i took the car to be looked at, ford explained to me that the throttle body was bad and needed to be replaced as it was causing an electrical communication mishap in the car. so over $900 later, the car was fixed. i did do my research and found that several other 06 ford freestyles had the exact same problem. even the service man at the ford dealer who fixed my car said that he had just had his 06 freestyle repaired for the same reason. this is a very serious and potentially dangerous problem. we should not have to wait until someone is seriously injured or dies to do something to fix the problem like a recall. there were times when i thought i was going to be rear-ended, in an accident, or possibly drive through my house. a recall would be being proactive instead of waiting to be reactive. being proactive shows that the ford cares for its consumers and appreciates them as well. safety should be priority #1!!! *tr

We own a 2006 ford freestyle and have had problems with sudden acceleration at low speeds and idling in general. the car was viewed by jeremy at classic ford in columbia, sc, and quoted a bit too quickly for me too feel comfortable. when i mentioned an 06 freestyle, it took no time to diagnose over the phone as a throttle body problem. the repair was quoted in the $850 range. i purchased a throttle body from another 2006 freestyle from a junkyard and made the repair. less than 7000 miles later we are seeing the beginning of the problem again. the initial surges/revving occurred few and far between, usually in hot temperatures with the air running. the idle rpm usually sits at about 500 rpm, and when we stop, still in drive, it surges, which causes the car to lunge forward. when it progressed, it was impossible to sit at a stop sign without idling from 500 to 750 rpm every second, back and forth. after i made the repair, the car ran great. but as i said, we are less than 7000 miles out of the repair, and the initial stages are happening again. i can purchase a part from the ford dealer for $600+, or an aftermarket part for $500+. my hesitation in yet another repair is a faulty part from the manufacturer, or a part that is not oem, but made per their specs by an aftermarket manufacturer that will fail in a similar manner. i believe the best case in this situation will be to take the $4000 hit i will incur due to kelly blue book differences from what the car is actually worth, now that other dealers know what's up. *tr

Car attempts to lunge while foot is firmly applied to the brake. this event sometimes results in an engine stall followed by the check engine light coming on. it has occurred frequently over the last 3 months. most occurrences do not result in the check engine light coming on. car failed vehicle inspection on 06/27/11 due to this event occurring while the inspector was testing the brake system. i don't plan to have the car worked on until this defect investigation is complete, so this car could serve as an example if needed.

Several months ago car started lunging when backing out of garage. last week when trying to back out of tight parking place in parking garage car lunged, hit parking garage wall and died. yesterday when trying to make right turn onto major street out of a parking lot and with several cars behind me, car lunged and died. the last 2 incidents happened when a/c was on and outside temperatures over 100. lunging out of garage has happened with various temperatures. *tr

Vehicle surges--when idling in park the rpms will jump intermittently from 500 to 1500 rpms. when put into drive or reverse and my foot is taken off of the brake the vehicle will lunge without my foot on the gas pedal. just bought this vehicle used 3 months ago and this is the first occurrence. 60k on the mileage. running a/c full force today when it happened as it has gotten hot outside. it happened several times today and stalled during one occurrence when backing up and the wrench light was illuminated. i restarted it without problems but came straight home as it was making me nervous. nothing has been done yet to try to resolve this issue but i've read online that it had something to do with the throttle body and occurs more when the a/c is in use. *tr

We are having concern with our freestyle. on numerous occasions i will be parked, in the school pick-up line, for example. when i release the brake, the car jolts forward without even pressing the accelerator. this can be terrifying, as it always seems to be in a situation where there are a lot of people whom could be injured. this also happens frequently in parking lots. this is a possible throttle malfunction? i am bringing to the mechanic to see if there is something they can do. because i have noticed there are other complaints regarding this issue, i thought i should state my concern as well. hopefully if a recall is needed to ensure safety of this vehicle, this will be thoroughly investigated. thank you.

Engine surged and eventually quit. car restarted, but would not get up to speed until 40 mph. wrench light came on dash, took car to dealership, where the throttle body was deemed responsible.
