My vehicle stalls every week steering and brakes hard to control, my wife drives the vehicle. took it to many shops, no codes stored in computer cannot find problem. i had the throttle body cleaned, replaced fuel pump, same fault. the car is unsafe hard to stop sometimes when engine shuts off. ford dealer cannot find the problem.
Driving my 2005 ford freestyle and all of a sudden, the vehicle starts to rev forward and backwards. i see the "engine fail safe mode appear and a lit up wrench also appears and the engine starts stalling or surging, followed by a sudden loss of power.
All engine lights come on at various times with no working gauges, but car drives. withing past year, had instrument cluster replaced 2 times, alternator replaced twice, injector coils & spark plugs, cleaned/replaced, battery replaced, throttle body assembly & gasket, . had diagnosed at 2 ford dealers in different states and neither can figure out what is causing all the dashboard lights to stay on. both dealers were adament it was the instrument cluster, which clearly it is not since the error lights are still on. have been told it could be electrical or rcm, but there is no way to test for either. dealer wants me to foot the (hourly / union) labor rate while they try to figure it out. currently car is currently with local mechanic who is going over the car to figure it out. nothing has been determined yet.
Engine surges at idle and when brakes applied, could easily rear end someone or run over someone worse when ac is running
While reversing slowly from a parking spot and turning the wheel, the 2005 ford freestyle suddenly accelerated without application of the gas pedal. quickly pressing the brake did work to slow the car down. this is not the first time that this has happened since i bought the car last year.

Door latches freezing every winter and doors will not latch and stay shut. also went to ford website and realized there was a recall for fsa title: engine idle rpm surge extended warranty field service action number: 12n03. i was unaware of this recall and my car does this quite frequently and i am afraid the tens years is up for this to be taken care of. when pull up to a stop sign or red light, sometimes the engine will rev really high and lurch forward causing me to stomp on brake pedal really hard.
While veichle is stationary, the engine revs between 500-1000 rpm. transmission seemed to have stopped shifting and made the rpm go all over the place. while turning at a slow speed it seemed to make the issue worse. was told it needs a new transmission.
My ford freestyle has begun to surge in acceleration when after i am stopped with my foot on the brake, and then i let it off first to go, it surges ahead or backward, depending on forward or reverse with no pressure at all on the accelerator. repeat, i do not put my foot on the accelerator, and it suddenly surges forward or backward with no warning, though i can hear the engine and as well as feel it once it surges. this is intermittent, and seems to occur when the ac is on. the mileage is 123,000, and it has happened about 5 times now, but it is intermittent. we were once in many situations: stopped idling at a light when it was time to go, stopped in a drive thru lane when it was time to go, stopped in a parking lot briefly waiting for pedestrians, so basically stopped for at least a few moments---and once while reversing from a parking space. this is a major safety issue. please reply asap to my email: [xxx]. i will be out of the country and will not be reachable by phone and all messages left on my cell phone will be long since deleted automatically before i would return to get them. please let me know if there has been anything found on this, since i see a large number of other people on this site have been having problems for a lot of years. this last happened when we last drove the vehicle on september 4th 2016. we have not as yet tried to have this fixed. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

I just bought my vehicle and started noticing some issues with the car racing/idling fast. several times it would lung forward while driving and while foot was on brake almost hitting a car, then stalled & reduced speed and wouldn't accelerate. the wrench light came on. took it too oreillys and found it is the throttle and throttle sensor. this is a serious issue and dangerous. i want it fixed by ford asap!
Car surged when backing out of parking space then went into limp mode. took to the shop and it needed the throttle body replaced. i see that has been an issue with this make/model for a lot of people. looks like there was a corrective action taken but it expired 1 yr ago. why did ford not notify owners of this and why does a known problem have an expiration?
When i turn on the ac in my vehicle the vehicle starts to lunge all of a sudden and i can be at a complete stop and it does it. also when i have my ac on my truck just turns off and it is scary because there is no warning it just turns off. i have two children and this is very scary to go through. please help me in trying to resolve this problem so that i do not have to go through this and cause an accident. also there is no way i can be driving without my ac with these three digit weather climates.
My engine lite came on i took it to o'reily to have it check out. they gave me thecodes to the throttle body. when i call ford dealer they said that it was not under recall any more. i did not recieve a notice thatthis was a defect in the car. it idles in park when you are at the stop ;lite and when itgoes int reverse. if your footnot on the brake it moves. i have sent a letter to you about three weeks ago no response. sent a letter to ford no response.
I drove into a parking space, set for park. the car just shot forward and hit a wall. the engine riffed loud, for a few second. could not redo the brakes. the wall was onle about 8 to 10 feet from me.the car was not in motion, because i just put it in park. it happen in a parkiong lot at cbs pharmacy. 1588 trancas street, napa, ca 94558 on march 14 2016 at 5:30 pm.there should be a police report. i had to go to the hospital, to check my back, because i had just surgery 3 weeks before, febr. 22 2016. i never received a recall, and i do my service at ford lincoln dealer in napa ca, soscol avn.i think there is a problem with the accelerator or ???my right front end is damaged.filed claim with the insurance. i need this problem fixed.
My vehicle enters engine failsafe mode in the middle of driving, experiences idle issues and the throttle body is responsible. i don't understand why there is not a recall present - when researching the issue you find many consumers with the same problem. i took my vehicle in to the dealership and they confirmed that it was the throttle body but that i would have to pay for repairs. my children have been put in serious danger due to the sudden engine shut off with no warning at various speeds including interstate driving. the engine failsafe happens while driving in town, while on the interstate, while accelerating, there is no warning or specific pattern.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while driving 65 mph, the check engine warning light and an unknown warning light randomly flashed. in addition, the transmission slipped gears and the engine idled roughly. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was not available. updated 08/30/16*lj updated 09/07/16. *jb

I got into the car to start it and the engine light was on, and i smelled smoke, the car was parked in my garage
1. driving car at 45mph..came to red light. when pushing a celerator to floor , car suddenly does not respond to pressure on gas pedal. will not pick up speed. notice check e gine on display panel and wrench symbol came on and words "engine in failsafe mode" display. 2. when standing still, engine yrunning... foot on brake . engine idling. ..car begins to lunge forward, engine revs up when lunging. 3. during 90 degree weather, driving at 55 mph, turned on ac. car immediately lost power and failsafe mode light came on.
While driving down a 45 mph road, the car lost all power, no acceleration, there was a truck behind us that almost hit us. we were able to pull over , we turned off the car and started back up and continued driving. we took the car to mechanic and they diagnostically tested it and he said immediatley four codes pulled up pointing to the electronic throttle body. with research i found out that even if you did pay for a new throttle body or cleaning, it will happen again because the throttle body malfunctions on itself, in addition throttle body works hand in hand with the transmission, type cvr which is not made anymore do to its failures. ford failed to recall this vehicle and its electronic engine etb on a car which ford only manudactured for three years, i wonder why..... well we could have been seriously injured, thank god we weren`t, but the investigation on the etb should be reopened for safety issues.
Kept having issues starting the vehicle along with while driving on the high way not being able to get up to the speed needed. took it too beechmont ford in ohio today and because check engine light would come on then go off . when i spoke to somebody i was told $100 for an hour to diagnose then i was told they needed two more hours. i finally get a call and they say i might need an entire new engine ! how is that possible with not even 69 thousand miles on it: i just purchased the car in august ! how can these cars be out there with such problems? a new engine! all because of code ps305 and ps 316. not to mention everytime i asked about the recalls being taken care of on my car i never was give an answer clearly. *tr
Vehicle lunges forward when driver's foot has the brake pressed while pulling into a parking space prior to shifting into park. *tr
Throttle body stuck closed, forcing limp home mode - stall in middle of highway, ford recall 12n03 did not work - after idling, there is a power surge which lunges vehicle forward while in drive at a stop sign, happened directly after service. *tr
We were pulling out of a parking lot into traffic on a highway and the wrench light came on and we lost all power to the vehicle. the vehicle had to be shut off and then started back up in the middle of the road. another incident happened on my way to work and there were cars behind me. i was able to make it to the side of the road to start it back up. the third incident happened again on my way to work and then the engine light illuminated and when i had it checked the codes p2104 and p2111 came up. the throttle body was stuck opened and in a bind. i was almost hit during the second incident and feel that this is a serious safety issue. i am glad that i wasn't on the interstate going 65 or 70 mph. the car almost came to a complete stop on its own in the matter of a few yards. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while driving 60 mph, the vehicle decelerated after the check engine and fail safe mode lights illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the diagnostic was unknown. no repairs were made to the vehicle. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 100,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while driving at various slow speeds, the vehicle lunged forward while the service engine light was illuminated. the failure occurred randomly in the winter months. the contact also mentioned that the engine stalled shortly after the failure occurred. the vehicle was able to restart after several attempts. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 75,000.
While driving on the highway with my four children the wrench light suddenly came on & my car was put in "safe mode" which caused my car to stop on the highway after losing all power. i was very close to be slammed into from behind. had engine light that came on read & was told the throttle body was stuck open. took it to local ford dealership where they cleaned the throttle body. drove normal for a week & now repeated same issue. car doesn't want to accelerate & goes into safe mode shutting down at random times. also sitting in line at my children's school the car surged forward while foot on brake almost hitting car in front of me. ford dealership says extended warranty only covered a cleaning & not replacement of a part they know is faulty. *tr
A little over 3 years ago, i filed a complaint regarding a surging with my ford freestyle. we had our vehicle serviced and the throttle body cleaned. the problem was resolved for a while, but we recently started experiencing issues again. this time the freestyle would lose acceleration, the rpms dropped, and a wrench-shaped warning light activated. at first it seemed to be an issue only when cruise control was activated, but has since happened during normal driving. we took our car into the dealer, and they completely replaced the throttle body for a total of $900, but we are still having issues. *tr
Car was financed and purchased used from authorized ford dealer in 2007 @ approx. 64k miles. previous owner was registered as ford motor co., indiana. on 12 jun 2014, without warning, the continuously-variable transmission (cvt) first showed signs of a problem: failing to shift out of lower speed gear from a stop to higher gears during travel. problem was remedied temporarily by shifting from d to r and back to d while stopped. the problem recurred sporadically, but within last week frequency of problem has increased while awaiting service appointment. this morning, 13-aug-2014, transmission slipped and failed to engage in any forward gear while stopped at intersection, resulting in a complete loss of forward propulsion. problem remedied by shifting from d to r and back to d, with significant difficultly. service technician states that cvt failures in this make and model are common and recommends replacement of transmission with rebuilt (as transmission is no longer manufactured by ford). moreover, only ford can perform the repair/replacement. no warning lights were activated during any of these events. cost of repair will exceed value of car. $5800 or more versus $3600 trade-in or instant-cash offer price $1500. ac compressor failure and rebuild (including rear ac) in 2012 cost $875. *tr
The problem with this car and the throttle body has been going on for a while. i took the car to the ford dealer but they only cleaned the throttle body when it needed replacement. the last event was in august 1 when while i was driving the fail safe mode came up and the car suddenly lost the power and wouldn't run faster than probably 0.1 mile per hour. this was the second time this happened the first time i was with my kids in a major highway and the car suddenly stop running. thank god i had a chance to steer to the emergency lane. many people are having the same issue with the 2005-2007 freestyle, this is a super safety issue and nobody is doing anything about it. when my car stopped i could have been hit on the back with a worst outcome. i got a tow truck and they took the car to the ford dealer. those people are not helpful at all and treated me with a bad attitude. very expensive to change that's why ford is not getting involved and only offered to clean the part in the extended warranty, knowing that wouldn't fix the problem. ford should have a recall for the throttle body part before somebody gets killed in a very serious accident that this problem could cause. *tr
While driving on the highway the wrench light suddenly came on & my car was put in "safe mode" . this make my car stop. i almost slam another car. had engine light that came on read & was told the throttle body was stuck open. took it to local ford dealership where they changed the throttle body. when the wrench light comes on the car doesn't want to accelerate & goes into safe mode. i took the car to a ford dealer and was told the transmission has to be replaced but it was replaced few years ago. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while accelerating from a complete stop, the vehicle experienced a three to four second lag. the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 104,902.
I was driving on the freeway roughly 65-70 mph and the failsafe engine mode came on, which disabled my gas pedal. i could not accelerate. i was in the far left lane, and had to "coast" with my hazard lights on so i could turn the car off while in park on the shoulder. i restarted the car and it went away. thankfully traffic was light! earlier in the week this same thinghappened on my way to work i was on a 35 mph rd, and it did this, lost all use of the gas. had to kill the car and restart but that time the check engine codes p2106 and p061b were drawn.(not the first time i've had these codes i know they mean throttle body'sbad) i've kept my obdii scanner in the car cuz these codes come up once a week at least. i just keep erasing them, restarting the car, and drives fine till it randomly goes off again. thus was the first time it has happened to me on the highway. it scared me to death that i would have been rear ended on a highway. these should be recalled. ford claims there's no safety issue. i barely avoided a potential fatal crash! *tr
This vehicle looses complete power while driving. runs sluggish and hesitates.. took it to the dealership for possible recall (throttle body) dealer says not the issue need to replace alternator, and transmission, etc.. called ford motor company customer service for assistance to see if this was a known issue. *tr
We had problems with it revving up wanted to go forward when parking. we had the throttle body cleaned , helped for a little while.problems with the air conditioning had compressor replaced, then starting having electrical problems (failure safe mode engine would shut down) while driving . had alternator replaced because all electrical starting shutting down and turning off while driving also transmisson was trying to go in reverse while driving reverse lights would come on very dangerous. replaced body computer still didn't fix the problem to afraid to drive it . it was paid off but no one could fix the problems, how can you have a vehicle that no one can fix,we have been informed that ford knew of these problems but would do nothing about them. very disappointed we really liked the car when we got it.
Me and my wife carpool on third shift to our jobs. upon backing out of the driveway in reverse, the wrench light came on, and an error reading" failsafe engine mode". i was able to make it to work, however i couldn't go fast at all no more than maybe 40. i'm seeing online many with this year and model need or have had new throttle body's put in with no luck coming from it. i'm hoping there's a recall because i have two children and a wife to get around in this one car.i wanna know what the recall is on it if one at all is available. why haven't they corrected it yet after all these years of problems and so many complaints? *tr
When idle in drive the rpm's surge by itself and the vehicle jerks forward. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that there was a sudden increase in engine rpms while the brake pedal was depressed. while the vehicle was in cruise control mode between 60-65 mph, the cruise control would deactivate independently and the engine would rev up without the contact accelerating. the dealer was notified, but the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 65,000.
In 2011 the throttle body failed on my 2005 ford freestyle. ford recommended cleaning the throttle body and i had this done at a ford dealer. ford later extended the warranty on this part and reimbursed me. following this, i found that the car occasionally lunged and the rpms would race. on november 3, 2013 the vehicle went into fail safe mode while driving at 45 mph. i was in heavy traffic and the entire engine stopped accelerating. i immediately hit my brakes and began to pull over. i restarted the vehicle and tried to make my way home at 15 mph. on monday i made an appointment to have my car seen. i was told it was still covered by the extended warranty. on tuesday the car again went into fail safe mode and shut down while driving. i was almost rear ended. on inspection, the dealer found that the throttle body was at fault. the part was faulty, and could not be cleaned to fix. it would have to be replaced, but ford would not cover the cost (over $900) even though they know there is a problem with this part. when calling, i was told that they would only cover a one time cleaning. the cleaning did not fix the problem, and this is a massive safety issue. the car shuts down in traffic, leaving you vulnerable. *tr
We purchased a used 2005 ford freestyle on april 4, 2013. it had 74,590 miles on it. on october 1, 2013 the ctv transmission began to fail. check engine and check transmission warnings came on, the car would not accelerate past 10mph, it lurched and crunched at 3500-4000rpms. we made it less than one block before it just stopped in the road. turning the engine off and back one, i was able to get back to ten mph and limp it back home. later that day after disconnecting the battery for ten minutes, the car fired up no problem and was drivable until the october 3, 2013 where this action repeated but it didn't even make it a block before stopping. again, by turning the engine off and back on i was able to limp it home. my husband was able to get it started one more time and took it to the mechanic. after an afternoon of full diagnoses, we were told it needed a new refurbed (so not even new) transmission for $6400.00! we were able to limp it home from the mechanics while we consider our options. after researching online this appears to be a well known problem with the ctv transmissions that ford is fully aware of and has no plans to correct. we would like to know what our options are with this lemon! we haven't even had it for 6 months and it has low mileage. thank you. *tr
Bought it 7/23/2013, day one fine. day 2, spouse in car, with 3 children, check transmission light, track control light, check engine light, wrench light all came on. .on the highway. car lost significant power, almost resulting in accident, car bucking and using significant rpms to accelerate . restarted the car after 3-4 times, lights gone car running smoothly. day 3, same thing. i've owned it for 6 days! terrified for my family and other drivers with this vehicle. too many safety complaints on the vehicle/transmission for ford not to recall. an american company putting americans at risk for harm. *tr
My freestyle surges and lunges forward and backwards. i hit a car while trying to back up and park because the car surged and accelerated into reverse. this is the second time that i have had this problem in 2 years and needed to replace the throttle body. i almost hit people in a parking lot because of the sudden surge and acceleration. this is extremely unsafe and unpredictable. needs to be recalled! engine mount was also cracked and needed to be repaired as in many of the other cases in the class action lawsuit. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while driving approximately 10 mph, the vehicle stalled as the check engine warning light illuminated. also, the contact mentioned that the wrench warning icon would illuminate intermittently. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the electronic throttle body needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure and current mileage was 132,000.
I took my car in to be serviced for maintenance (power steering service and transmission service) to the ford dealership in thomasville, ga. after a few days my 2005 ford freestyle started to display transmission data error, check track control, and check engine lights. i called the company and was advised to bring it in and i did. the alerts were not on at the time but the service man jerry and josh told me they would check my vehicle and let me know what - if anything was wrong. they kept it all day and when i returned to pick it up i was informed that it was fine and they re-serviced my transmission. about two weeks later my car started the same thing all over again while in traffic it seemed not to want to pull off normally with all these alerts lighting up after church one sunday. i called ford of course they were closed but the next day was monday i called and was asked to bring the car back in. this time once it started to do the same things jumping in gear and knocking hard this time the service man who answered my call says they are looking for a transmission and advised me that ford would pay for half the work and parts. i asked if they didn't cause it why would you offer to pay half. the last time they got my ford freestyle they gave me a borrowed vehicle and told my husband 4 days later that the car has electrical problems that they will pay none of the repair. i was told twice my car was fine now my husband just got a new job and no way to get to it because i believe ford damaged my vehicle and refuses to right their wrong. what can i do now?
