Throttle body replaced after car did not start - 2005 ford freestyle. prior to replacement, jerking/lurching of the vehicle once started and foot off the gas pedal. hesitated to start on many occasions if car is parked on an incline as if no gasoline in vehicle. also, on occasions, car stalled in the middle of the street, but started up after several tries. during replacement, ford representative indicated that the part just went out - nothing could have prevented it. cost $600+ to fix which also caused additional parts (spark plugs, fuel sensor) required. diagnosis indicated, throttlebody plates stuck, fuel sensor injector pressure replaced). dealership kept old parts except spark plugs. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that the vehicle would lunge forward abnormally with an abnormal increase in engine rpms. the dealer was contacted and advised that there were no recalls for the failure. the manufacturer was not contacted and the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 65,000 and the current mileage was 85,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact was driving approximately 2 mph and when pressure was applied to the brake pedal the vehicle suddenly lunged forward without warning. the failure occurred sporadically. the failure had not been diagnosed nor was the vehicle repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 87,000. updated 07/20/11*lj the consumer stated it felt as though the vehicle wanted to go forward when the brake was applied. the vehicle then went into fail safe mode. the consumer drove slowly to safe spot. after shutting off the engine and resstarting it, the vehicle perfomred as normal. updated 08/01/11
When put into reverse or drive from park, my 2005 ford freestyle will lunge uncontrollably. this is not something that happens everytime, but happens often enough to pose a safety risk to others and those in the car. *tr
Letter from congressman patrick t mchenry regarding concerns for the recall of a 2005 ford freestyle (dot/i#2010-2207) *tgw the consumer stated the vehicle would accelerate on its own. *jb
Purchased the car used from ford dealership. i had been following a friend on ih10 in east texas. friend had pulled over to side of road, i pulled in behind him. i stayed in my car with ac running for approx 10 minutes i put the car in gear and started to drive. the vehicle would not go over 20 mph. i pulled over and turned the car off. my friend saw me and pulled his vehicle over and came back to check on me. i started the car back up to get off the freeway the accelerator was racing even with my foot on the brake the engine light came on and the computer said it was running in safe mode. on july 2 2012 i took my son to airport. i parked in the parking lot ,we had set in the car in park with engine and ac running for about 15 minutes.. when i put the car in reverse the accelerator got stuck and with my brakes still applied the car lunged backward accelerator running full force. the gas pedal was not engaged by me and i had to turn the car off to stop the acceleration. when i turned the car back on the engine light was on and operating in safe mode. this is very unnerving and i think could have caused an accident had any cars been around me. i took the car in to the dealership where i had purchased it, have an appt to bring it back in on july 9 to have them fix it. i got on the website of ford today for any recalls that might have been called for my car-didn't see any for this type problem. however in researching the problem i found a lot of people who had reported it. this problem needs to be addressed and quickly before someone is injured or killed-and i pray its not me. the dealership is charging me $85 to run a diagnostic they already knows exists. as far as i can tell, no one has been able to have this problem resolved or fixed. *js
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that the vehicle would jerk backward or forward. the contact stated that the failure would sporadically occur when the vehicle was idle and neither the accelerator nor brake pedal was depressed. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised that the vehicle needed an unknown part replaced at the contacts expense. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact that there were no recalls for the failure and would provide no further assistance. the failure mileage was 50,000 and the current mileage was 55,000.
Accelerating on it's own and lunge's forward with foot on brake. vehicle tries to lunge, stalls dash displays "fail safe mode". this occurs mostly when going in reverse. this has been happening off and on for over the past 2 years and has gotten worse in the past months. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that when placing his vehicle in reverse with his foot on the brake pedal the vehicle started to lunge backwards. after the failure occurred he noticed that the wrench warning light illuminated. if the air conditioner was on the vehicle would malfunction more frequently than if was turned off. the vehicle was inspected by a dealer who advised him that they were unable to diagnose the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 52,900.
Have been having ongoing problem with car lunging, sudden acceleration especially when stopped. today it started and a warning light came on but went away when i turned the car off. later it started surging very badly again and i put fuel cleaner in the tank when i filled it up. a few hours later i was stopped at a stop sign and it surged and moved forward a few feet and died in the road. i will be contacting a ford dealer in the morning but when i got online to research the problem i found several complaints about similar problems that was being related to the throttle body(cleaned, replaced). *tr
Throttle body failure vehicle began lurching forward while in drive with brake applied this was on numerous occasions especially at drive through food establishments. i replaced the throttle body for $653.00 at my local mechanic. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while driving 35 mph the vehicle surged forward and shifted into fail safe mode which reduced the power of the vehicle. the contact drove the vehicle to an auto retail store for diagnostic testing and the results indicated that the throttle body failed. the next day the vehicle surged and shifted into fail safe mode again. the contact has not taken the vehicle to the dealer but noticed numerous complaints on the throttle body. the contact called the manufacturer and since the vehicle was out of warranty the manufacturer could not provide assistance. the contact stated that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. the failure mileage was 91,346.
2005 ford freestyle for 2 yrs having a problem with foot being on brake and the throttle wanting to go causing car to surge ahead - no accident yet - this is off and on - also if turning hard will surge - 2x went into safe engine mode - code p061b and p2106 then after parking car for awhile it will be fine - also rear brakes making noises and have to be replace every few thousand miles - car surges and accelerates on its own mostly when stopped with foot on brake also does this in reverse - car has about 120,000 miles on it at this time - very dangerous - cannot afford to have throttle body replaced - this happens every day pretty much - some days only once - this past week extremely often and went in fail safe mode - there should be a recall on this dangerous problem - i have read many complaints about this - very dangerous. *tr
This car has an apparently well-known issue with the throttle body failing, causing: a) sudden uncontrolled acceleration from a stop, and b) sudden loss of power when traveling down the road at highway speeds. my wife experienced both problems yesterday. first, with my wife's foot on the brake, the freestyle lunged forward and almost rear-ended another car that had children loading into it, while in school carpool line. then, while making her way immediately to the ford dealership -- with my two children -- this uncontrolled lunging from a dead stop continued at intersections; and while traveling at speed, in traffic, the car would suddenly lose all power. the sudden lunge makes it likely you'll hit a pedestrian or rear-end the car in front of you; the sudden loss of power makes it likely you'll be the recipient of a rear-end collision. the repair is costing us $730. it's the throttle body, of course. and i've asked the dealership to give me back the old part, so yes, i should have that available when i get the car back. *** important *** this is a well-known issue to both ford and the odi of the nhtsa. there are hundreds of matching, publicly filed complaints documenting this chilling safety issue in this very same odi database to which i am submitting this mirror complaint. when should we expect to see some action from the odi/nhtsa and/or ford on this???????? i want my money back but i also want ford to fix this, not just on my car, but on all the other family's' cars that have this **well-known** safety defect!!!!!!!!! *tr
When at a dead stop or accelerating slowly (as in pulling into or out of a parking space), the engine will suddenly surge, requiring hard braking. this has almost caused accidents at multiple times. this has been a problem this entire summer. the 9/2/10 date was when it was particularly bad and persistent. ominously, the typical setting describes the situation when in the line of cars when picking up our daughters at school. *tr
When air temperature is hot the car tends to jump a foot in moving forward from a stopped position or idle position or back a foot if moving backward from a stopped or idle position. *tr
The car lunges forward or backward depending if you are in drive or reverse. it is so fast you have to brake with both feet and pull against steering wheel to stop car. car trips into failsafe mode after this happens (would be too late, you would have hit something by then)dealer says it is the bad throttle body. seems to be a systemic problem with freestyle 2005-2007? very dangerous a matter of time before someone is run over or killed with vehicle. *tr
I own a 2005 ford freestyle awd with a 3.0l v6. i have had to park my vehicle as it has become unsafe for my family to use. while driving at slow speeds the vehicle will abruptly surge in drive or reverse. now when this happens the vehicle dies where ever it occurs. i have kept the vehicle from hitting other cars multiple times and yesterday was the final straw. i almost hit a kid at my child's school. waiting in line to pick up my children from school the car surged so bad that the breaks would not stop it. i had to throw it into park. i understand the volvo cars that share the same part have already been recalled. toyota had to explain themselves in washington for an issue not unlike mine. the first documented complaint on my car was in the second month of ownership. i was told that until the issue becomes bad enough to replicate there was no way to fix the problem. now i have a broken motor mount from the issue at my children's school and the drivetrain is making noises. guess what as soon as my 3year warranty was up the issue became more regular. now it is at my cost to fix an issue i reported within the first month of ownership. that is just wrong! *tr
At slow parking lot maneuver speeds vehicle lunges forward, usually on a hot day with air conditioning on. after braking ,check engine light comes on and car is sluggish. *tr
While slowing down to come to a stop sign at a crosswalk, my 2005 ford freestyle's engine suddenly started racing and jerking forward! pressing down as hard as i could on the brakes did not stop the car and i had to turn it off-if someone had been in the crosswalk, i would have hit them! needless to say, i am scared to drive my car-it is being towed to the dealership. mileage is 46,318. *tr
My ford freestyle lunged forward in 2010 while i was sitting in traffic at a toll booth on busy rt 128. at the time i was scared to death, and had to aggressively press the brake to keep it from hitting the car in front of me. this continued for a few mminutes, and eventually the car went into "limp home mode". when i got to a safe spot, i turned the car off. when i turned the car on again, this lunging did not happen again. at the time it happened i thought it was the heat, or because i had the air conditioning on, anything to justify what just happened. it was not until ii saw the news this morning 5/16/11 and realized the problem i had last summer was experienced by others. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that when shifting to drive, the vehicle lunged forward abnormally. also, when shifting from park to reverse, the vehicle would lunge backward. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the throttle was cleaned. there was an open investigation under nhtsa action number: pe11018 ( vehicle speed control) that the contact beleived could have been related to the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 45,000.
2005 ford freestyle se, self accelerating and lunge's forward on its own (when foot is on brake) and displays "fail safe mode on dash", vehicle shuts down-mostly when going in reverse. just bought used vehicle from dealership approx 3 weeks ago. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the vehicle was hesitant to accelerate when pressure was applied to the accelerator pedal. after repeated pressure, the vehicle would accelerate as normal. the fail safe warning light was illuminated on the dashboard and the failure recurred while driving in reverse. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the throttle body would need to be replaced. she was also informed that the parts needed for repairs were on back order. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the failure and current mileages were 60,000.
While the car is in idle or no acceleration made, at a stop or in reverse, my car will surge, even with the brake on. i checked with the better business bureau, and also with ford.com. they suggested i schedule a check up, which i did. i went to the dealer repair service and they were unsure of what to do. one mechanic suggested a throttle body replacement which is 700 dollars, but said he's unsure of how to proceed. this seems to me like a safety issue that should constitute investigation by nhtsa. especially considering what happened with the toyota. i searched online and found thousands of inquiries by consumers. some of which rear-ended vehicles. when will nhtsa take action? *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that after starting the vehicle and applying pressure to the brake pedal the vehicle lunged forward. the failure also occurred while driving in reverse. the engine safe mode light illuminated on the instrumental panel. the contact engaged the accelerator pedal and the vehicle failed to accelerate. the failure occurred multiple times. the dealer was not notified. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 59994. the current mileage was 61000.
I was sitting at a traffic light (1000 miles from home) and my 2005 freestyle lurched forward with my foot on the brake pedal. then the wrench light and failsafe engine mode warnings appeared on the dash. i carefully drive the car to the local dealership to find that the throttle body needed to be replaced and the part was in national backorder. *tr
Multiple incidents of acceleration when coasting (no gas). most noticeable when parking and backing up. have had fuel system checked and maintained multiple times without improvement.

My 2005 ford freestyle will speed up and surge forward. very dangerous situation while pulling into the garage. the surge forwarded has been happening for several years. we like the car and have become very careful when pulling up to intersection, into parking space, etc. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact was at a stop with the brakes depressed when the vehicle abnormally accelerated. the contact applied more abrupt pressure to the brakes but to no avail. she then shifted into neutral and made a right turn to avoid crashing into a vehicle ahead. the vehicle then began to shake abnormally before stalling. the wrench warning light then illuminated. she then shifted the vehicle into park and was able to restart the vehicle. the dealer advised they were not aware of the type of failure in her vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired or taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the unintended acceleration failure had only occurred once. in addition, the contact stated when arriving to her residence, there was an unusual increase in engine rpms when shifting into park. the failure mileage was 118,223 and the current mileage was 118,243. updated 11/03/10. *lj updated 11/04/10*jb
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact was reversing from a parking space and depressing the brake pedal as the engine exhibited an unusual increase in rpms. the contact removed his foot from the brake pedal and the vehicle then abnormally accelerated. the contact was able to stop the unintended acceleration by applying the brakes. the contact had experienced the failure over a dozen times. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer or a mechanic for repairs or diagnosis of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 35,000 and the current mileage was 35,550.
On 8-2-2010 i had some problems with my car not moving when the gas was pushed, then it wouldn't go on its own. had to have the throttle body replaced. after that, there were a few times it felt it would do it again. but no problems occurred. then on 8-4-2011 i had the same problems again and ford told me it needed another throttle body replaced.
I have a 2005 ford freestyle. it surges forward at low idle. i have taken it to the dealer, but they can't find anything. i have about ran through storefronts, my garage, and about hit parked cars. today i almost ran over a small child at soccer practice. i have to keep my foot on the brake at all times when i am going slow or stopped. i have found that there are problems with the throttle bodys on the freestyles, but the dealer denies it. *tr
My 2005 ford freestyle suddenly accelerates when my a/c is running and i'm applying or releasing my brakes - usually when pulling into a parking spot or backing up. *tr
The throttle body on our 2005 ford freestyle must be replaced. while driving today, 7/31/10, our car went into "engine failsafe mode" 8 times, 8 times!, while driving on the interstate and on a sc/nc state highway. fortunately we were able to find a safe place to pull over each time. we have been on a waiting list for 2 weeks for a $600 part, and must now rent a car. i have noticed many online complaints regarding this issue that date back several years. this is a serious safety issue and i am hoping that the nhtsa will finally encourage the ford motor company to issue a recall on this. thanks. *tr
I had my 92 yr old friend in my 2005 ford freestyle 500. i am 41. we had just left the hardware store. i put the vehicle in reverse. ( i just bought the vehicle from kenny ross ford as a used vehicle in nov. 2009.) the vehicle accelerated as soon as the transmission kicked in and it threw us backwards into the parking lot. i slammed on the brakes but at the same time the car stalled and i had no brakes. i stood on the brake peddle and finally came to a stop approximately 20 feet back into the parking area. my 92 year old friend was shaken so very badly i feared a heart attack. if i were older and not so strong, we could have been killed... garage said throttle body issue. i came home after telling him i felt as if i were driving a toyota, and he said it wasn't covered under my powertrain warranty and it would be $879.00 to fix. i haven't even owned it for a year yet. are you kidding me. now i am scared to drive it. *tr
I was driving my car (pulling out of a mall) approaching the highway, i stopped for traffic to clear. with my foot on the brake, my car suddenly leapt forward toward traffic. thinking that maybe i didn't have my brake pedal pushed hard enough (scaring me) i pushed my foot harder on the brake pedal. but the car kept lurching forward. luckily the traffic cleared & i proceeded onto the highway. then, the car didn't seem to move, so i pressed the gas pedal a little harder. the car acted like it was in neutral, then moved forward very slowly. i pushed the gas pedal harder, and again, the car acted like it was in neutral, then finally moved forward very slowly. traffic was coming from behind so i kept going forward. luckily the ford dealership was just a couple blocks away (around the corner). so i drove it very carefully straight to the dealership service department. at most i was going about 30-35 miles per hour. the dealership says the problem is the throttle body needs to be replaced. they have to order parts. luckily my extended warranty is in effect, so it's supposed to be covered, except for a $100. deductible. (plus we"ll need to pay charges to have the parts shipped asap). today, my husband checked online and found that this has been an ongoing problem with ford freestyle's. this is absolutely dangerous! my car could easily have lurched out into heavy 40-45 mile per hr traffic, if i hadn't had fast reflexes! or if i had pulled out in front of the higher speed traffic i could have been hit from behind! my car has only about 37,000 miles. i've had about four incidences of electrical problems with it. first, they replaced my alternator. then my battery. then my instrument cluster panels & (in the dashboard) airconditioning panels. at least they're the things that i know they've done (because the don't tell you all the things they've fixed or replaced). i don"t know if these things are connected. also according to the internet, these parts have be hard to find. *tr
2005 ford freestyle has problems with throttle body - which appears to be a very common problem. why no recall from ford? *tr
when activating the air conditioner, the vehicle would exhibit an unusual increase in engine rpms. sporadically, the vehicle would surge forward when the failure would occur. the first time this happen the car had 40,000 miles on it. it seems to happen during the summer months only while it is hot, went to local dealer and they said it was the throttle body. i have notice that there are several complaints on this issue. i t seems to be very dangerous when this happens. i can't believe that the car doesn't have a recall on this issue. please check into this. *tr
Just after placing car into reverse, it started accelerating backwards and required high pressure on the brake pedal to stop it. this is the 3rd or 4th time this has happened. the first time or 2, i thought it was me. each time i looked down at my foot to make sure i was not pressing both pedals and i was not (i'm a high-speed driving instructor). the last time it happened, i applied full brake pressure, the engine stalled and the message "engine failsafe mode" appeared on the warning cluster. we've stopped driving the car until it's fixed. many many people are reporting throttle body issues. this is dangerous. *tr
A little bit over a year ago had several instance of car suddenly accelerating while parking in both reverse and forward, car rpm's increase and lower suddenly without foot being on accelerator and have to hold foot more frimly on brake to keep from hitting other vehicles, pedestrians or anythng else that may be close, car then enters into the fail safe mode which is reset on engine restart. condition went away but in the last several months it has happened again several times. usually seems to happen when driving while weather conditions are hot (in excess of 90 degrees) every time the air conditioning has been on. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while driving 2 mph the contact noticed that the vehicle would suddenly lunge forward without warning; however, when the brakes were applied the vehicle failed to malfunction. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where a throttle body kit repair was performed on the vehicle; however, the failure continued to occur. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the contact was informed that the throttle body needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 65000. the current mileage was 103000. updated 10/13/10. *lj the dealer informed the consumer the throttle body needed to be replaced. updated 10/19/10*jb
Failure of throttle body almost caused multiple accidents within 1 day (july 23, 2010). waiting to pull out of gas station, the car took off while my foot was on the brake and put myself and my family into oncoming traffic! on the same day, i was reversing out of a parking spot and the car again accelerated by itself and i almost hit the parked car behind me. the car has 79,000 miles. at about 36,000 miles, i had same problems and the dealer fixed. i researched forums on the internet and found that several other families having similar problems. this is very dangerous!!! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact was sitting at a complete stop with the brakes depressed when the vehicle independently accelerated. the contact stated the failure occurred several times and on occasion, the vehicle would stall immediately after the failure. when the vehicle would not stall, the contact would abruptly apply the brakes and shift into park to stop the unintended acceleration. the dealer replaced several wires. the failure recurred within three days after repairs. the vehicle was taken to a second dealer where she was advised that the throttle body would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not further repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was approximately 61,500 and the current mileage was approximately 62,000.
2005 ford freestyle while stopped a traffic light suddenly accelerated without anything touching the gas pedal. i had to apply a lot of pressure to the brake to prevent the vehicle from entering the intersection. the vehicle then died and when restarted the check engine light and wrench symbol were lit up. i took the vehicle to the dealer who said it was due to a failed throttle body. it has been 6 days and the vehicle has not been repaired due to no parts available and from what i am seeing on the internet this is a common problem and i think it could cause serious accidents if the problem is not resolved. *tr

Two incidents - while maneuvering at parking lots (external temperature around 100 degrees), vehicle's engine surged and vehicle lurched forward and a second time backward. had to apply heavy breaking to avoid hitting a tree in the first incident and other cars on the second incident. after a few seconds the engine shut down and the message engine safe mode appeared in the panel. after turning the ignition off and on again, the problem disappeared. *tr
2005 ford freestyle lunges forward when 1) engine is warm, 2)a/c is on, 3) at complete stop with brakes engaged and 4) begin to turn steering wheel to make turn. 5) engine stalls. dealer diagnosed defective throttle body. very unsafe!!! *tr
I was driving my 2005 ford freestyle and had come to a complete stop. i had my foot on the brake. when i took my foot off of the brake the car surged forward without my ever having touched the accelerator. i slammed my foot on the brake to avoid hitting the car ahead of me. my car stalled and i was able to restart it. the check engine light came on. my mechanic told me that the throttle body needed replacement. *tr
