Problems with 2005 Ford Freestyle VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

On average, the 2005 Ford Freestyle starts to “feel” problems with the VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL and its various aspects after 85 362 miles.

Recently reported VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL problems on 2005 Ford Freestyle

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated the vehicle would abnormally accelerate when first started. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for repairs or inspection. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage was 80,000. the vin was not available.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that the vehicle lunged forward and backward when the brakes were applied. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who ran a diagnostic test and stated that the throttle body had failed. the manufacturer was notified and advised the contact to take the vehicle to an authorized dealer for inspection. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the failure mileage was 64,000.

The vehicle is experiencing a surge in the engine performance at a low speed and also when shifting into drive, neutral, reverse & park. the surge of the engine causes the vehicle to lunge forward or rearward (depending on what gear is selected) and when put in neutral or park a sharp increase in engine rpm's is experienced to the extent that the engine stalls. this problem is a constant occurrence, not intermittent or every once in a while. *kb

Ford freestyle lunging wife nearly hit someone on a bike. *tr

My 2005 ford freestyle has had increasing problems with unexpected lunging. this has occured numerous times when parked or stopped. usually i can press the brakes and control the movement. recently, however, i was in a long line of cars leaving a multistoried parking garagae on july 3rd of this year. as we moved down toward the exit, the car became increasingly difficult to manage, lunging repeatedly, and even braking as usual did not stop the lunge. i barely missed the car in front of me, and was grateful that no pedestrians crossed in front of my car. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated the vehicle accelerated unexpectedly when his foot was not on the pedal. the vehicle also accelerated when it was idle. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer, but the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 44,000 and the current mileage was 46,000.

My 2005 ford freestyle sel fwd has sudden acceleration problems in both forward and reverse. this issue happens more frequently and is worse in the warmer months. this issue has been going on for the past 4 years with my vehicle. the sudden acceleration caused my freestyle to shut down and go into engine failsafe mode the last time. the acceleration issue occurs multiple times a day. the dealer says that since there is not a recall on the vehicle there is nothing that they can do that won't come out of my pocket. i am worried that the car will one day lunge forward or backwards into another vehicle or a person walking around the car. ford needs to be forced to issue a recall and correct this problem before someone is gravely injured. *kb

2005 ford freestyle is experiencing sudden acceleration. we first experienced the problem soon after purchase, but the throttle body was cleaned (or so we were told) and the problem went away until recently. now it does it frequently and with a new driver in the family we are fearful about the safety of the car. the driver of this car must be very aware of its tending to accelerate / surge. the car has twice shut down in safe engine mode when it surged while backing out of a parking space. *tr

The car occasionally lunges unexpectedly at slow speeds with the a/c running such as when pulling into a parking space. this also could occur while driving in a drive-thru lane with a/c on. i can also get this to happen at a stop light or sign by just turning the steering wheel slightly to the left or right with a/c on. i believe the issue is with the a/c system and power steering because i don't recall having any issues when the a/c is off. another issue with the car is that it can stall after idling in park and then goes into failsafe mode. in this mode, the car accelerates very slowly with a maximum speed of 30 mph. i don't recall any failsafe occurrences during the winter. this only seems to occur after the car had been idling in park with the a/c on. to resolve the failsafe issue the multiple times it has happened, power off then on the car. it has never happened twice in a row. i no longer idle the car with a/c running. my wife will occasionally drive my car; she knows about all of the issues and has had them occur. my son (18) is not allowed to drive my car. another issue is with the driver's side middle row seat. the seat will not go down unless extreme force is used. once the seat goes down it will work normally the next few times before needing extreme force again. we have taken the car to a ford mechanic multiple times for the above issues and they were unable to identify the problems. i purchased the vehicle new in november '04. the car now has over 103,000 miles. i have had these issues for many years. my incident date is the last time the lunges occurred as i don't recall the date of the first issue. *tr

I purchased at 2005 ford freestyle in 2006. my vehicle now has 88,800 miles on it as of 07/18/11. over the past year my vehicle has began accelerating when i shift the vehicle into a forward or reverse gear. my foot is always firmly on the brake. recently, i have been turning the a/c on low and watching the rpm's before i shift into gear. my car will still jump on me and the motor will accelerate even at 500 rpm"s. i will not go through a drive thru because this is where my car will cause the most problems and i never know when my vehicle will begin to malfunction. i have called 2 ford dealerships and they are aware of this issue, but they would have to duplicate the problem before they can diagnose anything. they state it could be a number of issues. i am reluctant to take it in cause i know that i will be spending lots of money and the problem will not be resolved. i think ford needs to isolate the problem and fix it. this seems to be very similar to the issues that some of the ford taurus's had in the past. this car is just a revamped ford taurus....different look same problems! *kb

I have had my 2005 ford freestyle lunge while in either drive or reverse. luckily nothing has been damaged and no one has been injured. i have noticed that it usually only happens while the air conditioning is on. also i have been having issues trying to get my vehicle out of park. i am having problems with the gear shift. it doesn't seem to matter if i have just started my vehicle or have been sitting in a drive through. please advise as to what i need to do to get this resolved. *tr

Car lunges unexpectedly at slow speeds especially when pulling into a parking spaces with foot on brake. car stalls after idling restarts in failsafe mode car then accelerates very slow with unexpected lunges car also stalls after reversing. this may be associated with a/c i have not had as many fail safe occurrences during the winter. this seems to occur everytime i drive the car in warm weather. we have taken to a mechanic before they were unable to identify the problem. replaced coils on one visit but did not fix the problem. purchased vehicle used and had this problem immediately dealer was unable to fix. purchased car in june 2010. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that upon shifting into reverse, the vehicle lunged forward. an engine safe mode also began to illuminate on the instrument panel. the vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure and current mileages were 78,200.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while stopped at a traffic light with the brakes engaged, the vehicle lunged forward and the engine revved to a very high rpm. the failure also occurred while in reverse. the vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 70,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. whenever the gears began to shift from reverse to drive the vehicle would lunge forward and then backwards. while driving 70 mph all of a sudden the speedometer would decrease to 35 mph without any warning and the vehicle would also slow down. all of the warning lights on the instrument panel would illuminate. the failure occurred on numerous occasions. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who performed a diagnostic test but could not diagnose the failure nor were any error codes displayed. occasionally when the vehicle was turned off and then back on it would reset itself. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 86,000.

For months, car has surged forward or backward depending on gear. although a little frightening, it has been easily stopped by applying the break firmly. on june 27, 2011, the engine unexpectedly revved several times while in park, no one in driver seat. last summer a/c compressor was replaced, problems seemed to begin after that. *tr

While idling my freestyle will accelerate without my foot being on the gas pedal. i am always afraid to take my foot off the brake while idling just waiting for the car to jump forward. *kb

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated the vehicle suddenly accelerated while the brakes were applied and the vehicle was not moving. the contact stated the vehicle functioned normally while driving at an average speed. the failure only occurred when the vehicle was coming to a stop or accelerating from a stop. the vin was not accepted at the time of the complaint. the failure mileage was unknown, but the current mileage was 92,000.

Car is surging while stopped at a stop light. worse with the a/c on. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that the vehicle would lunge forward abnormally with the brakes depressed. the dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure but provided no assistance. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 65,800 and the current mileage was 66,000.

I own a 2005 ford freestyle. with normal driving, this vehicle will surge in speed when placed in reverse and drive. i will be in a parking lot or my home garage and start the engine, place car in reverse, and the car will immediately surge in speed if my foot is not firmly placed on the brake. this has almost resulted in several accidents in public lots. this has happened for the last few months and several times a week. it has recently happened when i place the car in "drive". during the most recent incident, my engine fail safe light came on to indicate a problem. i have recently had the throttle body assembly replaced to the amount of $665.35. i was also informed that this part was redesigned for later models. i hope this resolves this issue. i also hope that no one has a serious accident resulting in injury to innocent parties due to this defective part. *tr

Purchased car used from ford dealer and bought extended warranty. experienced car accelerating or lunging as car was shifted to reverse with foot still on the brake. took it to dealer under warranty and repairs were made. it did not resolve the problem. now we are out of the warranty and it is getting worse. now it lunges and tries to accelerate while sitting at a stop and will also stall requiring an engine restart. seems very very dangerous. i see many people complaining about the exact same thing on the internet and an investigation on the way. add my issue as another example of this problem for 2005 ford freestyle vin [xxx]. investigation nhtsa: pe11018. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).*tr

1. the air conditioner failed, had to be replaced june 2011. it just gradually did not cool the air at all. fan on ac worked fine, all controls as well, just no cool air. $850. the vehicle lunges forward or backward, more noticeable when starting to back up. had valves cleaned. worked temporarily. looking at major repair bill for throttle body or transmission, don't know which.. *tr

Car lunges forward or backward intermittently, when i leave the house. i have just put the car from parked into reverse, when i step my foot off the brake, but haven't touched the gas yet, it accelerates on me. it's very scary, each time it has occurred (about once a month in the past 2 years), i was fortunate to have quick reflex, step on the brakes and didn't hit anything. but i am worried about this happening one day when i am too close to other objects (ie. a drive-thru) and hitting another car! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated the vehicle would surge forward with the brake depressed or when the air conditioner was activated. neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure, nor was the vehicle diagnosed or repaired. the current mileage was 145,000 and the failure mileage was 142,000. the vin was unavailable.

Car lunges up to ten feet when my foot in not on the accelerator. my mechanic says it's the throttle body causing the problem.this has happened numerous times and has caused me to almost have accidents. there are currently no recalls, however, according to your website over 238 complaints have been filed. when can this be listed as a recall and have the car fixed by ford! this is a very dangerous situation. why wait til someone gets killed or hurt? please do something and do it today! we need your help! *tr

We have experienced numerous problems with our freestyle, and at this point are faced with a failed throttle body, which will cost $900 to replace (dealer quote). searching the internet reveals that this is a very common, known problem with the freestyle, and its sister cars (the 500 & sable) all build by ford with the same engine. the problem causes the vehicle to lurch while at idle, to perhaps 5-10 mph, endangering anyone in the vehicle's path (ie, pedestrians, cars ahead in a drive-thru lane, etc.) ford has produced several successive variants of the throttle body, indicating the newer ones do not have the fatal design flaw that plagues the original. why am i forced to purchase a replacement for an obviously (at this point) badly designed product? these cars should be recalled, and we should be reimbursed for the expense. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while in reverse with the contacts foot on the brake, the vehicle suddenly surged backwards. the contact continued to apply the brakes until the vehicle stopped. the vehicle then stalled without warning. the contact was able to restart the vehicle. the failure occurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for a diagnostic test. the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. there was an investigation under nhtsa action number: pe11018 (vehicle speed control) that may be related to the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 70,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated his vehicle lunged forward when the brake pedal was being depressed and he was making a left turn. this failure happened more than once including while driving in reverse. the wrench warning light illuminated after the vehicle lunged forward. the vehicle was driven onto the emergency land and towed to the dealer. the dealer stated the throttle body needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 78,300. updated 11/17/11 *bf

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while stopped in a parking space with the brake pedal applied the vehicle lunged forward. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the throttle body needed to be replaced and reprogrammed. after the repair the failure recurred two different times. the contact stated one of the times the vehicle lunged forward it crashed into a rail and steps leading to a shop. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer who decided to reprogram the computer. there was an investigation under nhtsa action number: pe11018 (vehicle speed control) that may be related to the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated the information would be reviewed by there general counsel division but did not offer any further assistance. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 86,936...updated11/21/12 *bf updated 12/3/2012 *js

While attempting to parallel park, my 2005 ford freestyle, accelerated on its own and almost caused me to collide with the car behind me. i have had over 10 incidents where my car has accelerated on its own. today when it happened the car ended up stalling and the check engine light came on. this has become a safety issue and seems to be happening more frequently. i will contact my local ford dealer to see what what steps ford is taking to resolve this issue.

2005 ford freestyle-drove into parking lot to pickup friends waiting. put car in drive and car lunged forward with my foot on brake jumping several feet forward then engine stalled. restarted while in middle of parking lot to oncoming traffic, and repeated above stalled and lunged, again and again after 5th time wrench light showed on dash display -started car and was able to do a tight u and repark vehicle. wrench light remained on. left car in lot after returned from dinner 2 hours later the wrench light was out and vehicle was taken home and appointment made at local mechanicl. mechanic called with info that we needed to take to ford repair with code #'s p061b & p2106. ford presently is looking at vehicle and was told they reset the computer and we needed a tune up and as of this moment, they are having difficulty getting things back to us. vehicle is a 2005 ford freestyle with 65,000 miles on it. this is a very scary dangerous thing that happen. fortunately no cars in the lot were hit as the car lunged approximently 8-10 feet and i wasnt driving down the road. after looking on line last night i see the nhtsa is investigating after approximate 500 reports of varying years of this vehicle reported these same details. after reading them, i see my situation fits this to a tee! some have replaced the throttle body for a cost of $1000 only to have it happen again after this repair. several months ago we thought we may have gotten bad gasoline as the car was acting as though it was surging back and forth and would stall after starting and running rough for a few minutes. put additive in the gas tank.i think ford needs to investigate this is very dangerous, i no longer trust that i will be safe driving my car and i would not want any of my loved ones driving this vehicle and having this happen as they were in traffic, surely would be an accident and hopefully no ones lives will be taken because of this issue. i love my ford freestyle and never had complaint til now. *tr

Car lurching forward while foot on brake and going dead while driving stated in feb but is now worse with the heat. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact was reversing with the brakes applied. as pressure wa removed from the brakes, there was an abnormal increase in engine rpms as the vehicle abnormally accelerated. the contact experienced the failure at least five times. the dealer was contacted and advised that there were no recalls for the vehicle. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 50,000.

2005 ford freestyle lunges forward when a/c is on in hot weather at idle speed. problem has occurred on a regular basis(20-30 times) each summer for the last 4-5 years. we have had it in the dealer several times and made many, many phone calls. one repair in the beginning was the thottle body. it had got to the point where the dealer notified us they could not diagnose the problem unless the message system stayed on which it never did. after each incident the message center would display "failsafe mode" but would not return after thr engine was restarted. very unsafe-my wife almost ran over children in the pick up line at school. i am concerned the car may lunge into fast moving traffic. i notified the dealer 5-3-11 to ask them about your investigation and whether something can now be done. the service advisor told me there was no record of a possible recall or investigation. *tr

Two incidents occurred on he same day. first time, i was in the driveway at my home waiting for my wife to come out of the house. the car was in reverse with my foot on the brake pedal. i was idling with the air conditioner on. the car suddenly lurched backwards about 12-24 inches. my foot was not on the accelerator. my concern is that there were children riding their bicycles at the top of my driveway. no vehicle malfunction or warning errors were displayed at this time. the second occurrence happened about an hour later. we had just walked out of our local costco store and were parked. the car was idling, in reverse, with the air conditioner running. the vehicle lunged back again (12-24 inches). again, there were people walking in the parking lot. with this occurrence, an engine warning indicator was displayed. my foot was not on the accelerator. the "failsafe engine mode" warning was displayed on the dashboard along with the orange wrench symbol. the car stalled out this time. i removed the keys from the ignition and let the car sit for a few minutes. i then restarted the car and no warning lights were displayed. at this time, we drove the car home. the following week, we took the car to the dealership and they diagnosed the problem as a throttle body issue.

Car lunges forward at certain times. most notably while air conditioner is running and pulling into a parking place. sometimes lunges while pulling out of parking; so while in reverse. seems to have something to do with tight turning of the steering wheel. mention has been made of a possible throttle body sensor problem. when taken to the mechanic however; it would not lunge, so no repairs were made. only does it on certain occasions. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that the vehicle would suddenly accelerate without warning while driving at various speeds. the failure would also occur while stopped with the brakes engaged. the dealer advised the contact to file a complaint with nhtsa. the manufacturer was not aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 141,964. updated 07/20/11*lj the consumers wife was driving the vehicle, when it accelerated out of control, which resulted in an accident. there was no damage to the other vehicle, but minor damage to the consumers vehicle. no police report was filed. updated 08/05/11*jb

2005 ford freestyle continuously missing out and or lunges. if it's hot out & air is on car will drastically lunge forward or reverse. if it's raining out car misses out while just driving normally & acts as if it's going to stall out when going forward from a stop light or similar situations. there have been many near misses with both type of incidents. also check fuel cap comes on periodically & goes off for no apparent reason as well. vehicle has not felt safe for quite some time - but it's paid for. i've read many many concerns with these issues & am shocked that this has not been recalled by now - what does it take?? *tr

2005 ford freestyle sel lunges/surges when parked or at low speeds in forward and reverse. it will rev up to 3-4,000 rpm and vehicle will almost jump even when brakes applied. when ac is running, it happens more often. if brakes are applied 100% it will move and it's worse in reverse. has almost caused a few fender benders in parking lots due to the lunging. this has been occurring since we got it in 2009 and has been getting worse. *tr

When stopping, parking, or backing up, the vehicle occasionally accelerates unexpectedly. in the last 6 months, it has happened a minimum of 10 times. i have not taken the vehicle to the dealership to have the problem diagnosed, as i cannot afford the repair costs. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that when sitting with the vehicle idle and the engine running, the vehicle would lunge forward abnormally. neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 62,000 and the current mileage was 63,000. also when you go from park to reverse the car lunges terribly. updated 09/29/2011 *ln

i have a 2005 freestyle, i bought new, and have had the throttle body replaced twice for this surging issue. the dealer said it was a bad throttle position sensor. i have read on the forums about other people having the same problem. this is my wife's car and she freaks out when it surges, she has almost lost control sometimes. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that the vehicle would intermittently lunge forward when the vehicle was stopped and would lunge backward when the vehicle was in reverse. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who was unable to duplicate the failure. no repairs were performed. the current mileage was 70,000 and the failure mileage was 40,000.

Own a 2005 ford freestyle that lunges when the air conditioner is turned on. i've had this problem for several years now with no resolution. it lunges after i've been sitting in idle at a traffic light or if i am backing up. so far i've not had an accident , but just wonder when my luck will run out. sometimes the car will stall out and go in to engine fail safe mode. also i will have my foot firmly on the brake and the car seems to over ride this action and lunges/accelarate on its own. *tr

My wife and i just bought a 2005 ford freestyle, 2005 model. the vehicle jerks and lunges when our foot is not on the gas pedal. we took it back to the dealership where we bought it and they sent it out to a ford dealership. the claim they couldn't find anything wrong and gave it back to us. the car still jerks and lunges and is very dangerous to drive. *tr
