While on out of state vacation, our 2005 ford freestyle was idling in park with the ac running. when the car was placed in reverse, it accelerated quickly (unintended) with no input at the accelerator pedal. once i stopped the car, the engine died. when it was restarted, it idled roughly for a minute and then ran ok. this type of unintended acceleration has randomly occurred 6 times total within a period of one week. the last time this occurred, the engine died once the vehicle was stopped. when it was restarted, the wrench light illuminated on the instrument panel. we drove the car to an autoparts store where the codes were read. the codes were p2106 & p061b. when the engine restarted, the wrench light on the instrument panel did not illuminate. we took the car to a local ford dealer and described the events in detail. the ford dealer performed a diagnostic test but no codes were detected. they said we needed a new throttle body. they came to this conclusion because of a technical services bulletin issued by ford (tsb 06-21-1). the car has 79,857 miles so the dealer said it was out of warranty and that there were no recalls on the throttle body. i called ford customer relationship center and was told the same thing. i expressed my concern about the safety issue of the unintended acceleration but their only comment was that is was my responsibility to pay for repairs. we have talked to another party who has had the same occurance with their freestyle. their throttle body was replaced under warranty but has once again started the unattended acceleration. i have also seen several posts on internet forums from people having the same problem. it appears that the replacement throttle bodies have the same defect and this is only a temporary fix. this problem could easily result in a crash or a pedestrian being struck. our car has not been repaired. the defective throttle body is still intact on the car. the car is also very slow to decelerate. *tr

My 2005 ford freestyle with 45,000 miles kept surging forward. it happened twice in 2 months when i was alone. this past july i picked my grandchildren up at camp sure enough it did it again almost striking a child in the parking lot. brought it to the dealership and $800.00 dollars later found out it was the throttle body. there are many complaints with this same issue. needs to be a recall!!! this is no different than the toyota situation. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that when shifting into reverse, the vehicle would lunge backward with the illumination of the fail safe mode error message. the vehicle would then stall. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the throttle body was defective and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 43,824 and the current mileage was 60,100. this would also happen when stopped at a stop sign or light. although lunging forward. updated 09/29/2011 *ln *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that when the vehicle was idle it suddenly lunged forward. she noticed the failure during periods of extremely hot weather and the air conditioner was on. the vehicle was taken to a repair shop but the mechanic could not duplicate the failure. the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the current mileage was approximately 129,000. the failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while attempting to park the vehicle, there was an abnormal increase in engine rpms and the vehicle abnormally accelerated. the contact had to apply extreme pressure to the brakes to get the vehicle to stop. the contact stated that the failure would happen whenever the steering wheel was turning and the air conditioner was simultaneously in operation. the vehicle was not taken vehicle to the dealer. the failure mileage was 75,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact started the vehicle and the rpms increased excessively. the failure occurred upon initial start up and when the vehicle was in operation. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the technician stated that the failure was contributed to the throttle body gasket which needed to be replaced; however, the part was unavailable. there were 2,300 throttle body repair kits on a massive back order. the vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. the failure mileage was approximately 79,000.

Tl* the contact owns 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while driving at 60 mph, the vehicle stalled. the check engine warning light was illuminated. the dealer advised the throttle body was defective and would need to be replaced. the part needed to make the repair was not readily available. the contact was advised by the dealer that the part was on back order for six weeks due to the frequency of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact was awaiting repairs. the failure mileage on the vehicle was 61,000 and the current mileage was 68,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while driving, the vehicle would lunge forward when the air conditioning was being used. he had to depress the brake pedal to stop the vehicle from moving forward. he noticed that the problem had occurred at least once a day, but only when the air conditioner was on. to avoid any problems, he would shift into neutral at a stop light. the vehicle had not been inspected or repaired at the time of the complaint. the vin was unavailable. the contact had not spoken with the manufacturer. the current mileage was approximately 72,000. the failure mileage was approximately 69,000.

Tl*the contact owns 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that the vehicle accelerated without placing her foot on the accelerator pedal. the failure occurred when she drove forward or in reverse. the dealer cleaned the throttle body, but was unable to repair it because the part was on back order. the part was cleaned, but the failure continued to occur. the contact stated that the vehicle would also eventually stall because of the failure. the failure mileage was 85000 and the current mileage was 95000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while driving at various speeds, the vehicle experienced unintended acceleration. while driving approximately 50 mph, the speed suddenly accelerated to 65 mph although the driver did not engage the accelerator pedal. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and repairs were performed, but no information was available. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 60,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated while starting the vehicle or while in an intersection with the brake depressed the vehicle lunged forward. the failure occurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who performed a diagnostic test that located the failure within the power steering. the contact advised the dealer that the failure was not the power steering. the dealer replaced the throttle sensor assembly. the repair corrected the failure for approximately six months and recurred when the vehicle lunged forward while the brakes were depressed. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 64,372 and the current mileage was 79,145.

I have 2005 ford freestyle. the problem is that with your foot on the brake it will surge forward or reverse depending on what gear you have it in. i've researched this online and found many people with the same problem. something needs to be done before someone gets hurt or killed. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated the vehicle would momentarily surge forward while driving at various speeds. the failure would also occur while the brakes were engaged. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer but the failure was not diagnosed and the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure but no assistance was offered. the failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 101,000. updated 06/17/11*lj updated 06/27/11

I have a 2005 ford freestyle. about 2 years ago it started lurching/lunging in forward and reverse. it only happens when you run the ac. if your foot is on the brake the motor races and when you take your foot off of the brake it lurches. we thought it was our transmission and put a new transmission in, and of course that was not the problem. we have spent a lot of money trying to fix this problem with no results. evidently most everyone that owns this car is having the same problem. ford needs to man up and fix this problem it is obvious that there is a problem with the parts that ford put on the car and they should be responsible for fixing it. i am so tired of dealing with this problem. i hit a car in the drive thru of a fast food restaurant. luckily the car i hit already had a torn up bumper or that would have been one more expense i would have been stuck with. fix this problem ford!!!!!! *tr

I began having a problem with my freestyle surging with my foot on the brake or idling when backing out of a parking place, while stopped at a traffic light and while waiting on pedestrians to cross in front of me. it's very scary when the car starts lunging and you're afraid you're going to hurt someone. this problem first started happening in 2010. after reading about the problems with the throttle body on the internet, i took it to the shop and had them clean it. that fixed the problem until the past couple of weeks (september 2011) and now it is starting to do it again. last year i also had a problem with it bogging down on the interstate not knowing if we were going to get rear ended or not. i hope you finish your investigation soon. ford should be responsible for this problem and correct it before someone gets hurt. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while driving at an unknown low speed the vehicle surged forward until extreme pressure was applied to the brake pedal. the failure continued to recur intermittently. the contact stated that the vehicle would intermittently stall while driving at highway speeds. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the computer was replaced. the vehicle was taken back to an authorized dealer since the failure continued to occur and was advised that the throttle body needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 50,000 and the current mileage was 60,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while the vehicle was idle and his foot was on the brake pedal the vehicle accelerated. he applied extreme pressure to the brake pedal in order to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of him. the failure had occurred for several months and continued to occur several times a week. the vehicle was taken to the dealer on august 9, 2010 and the dealer advised him that the throttle body needed to be replaced. the dealer advised him that they did not have the part and it would be several weeks before it was available. he also advised the dealer that the vehicle was not safe to drive. the contact took the vehicle to a local mechanic who stated that he would have the part in a day. the throttle body will be replaced by a local mechanic. the approximate failure mileage was 73,500. the current mileage was 74,913.

Tl*the contact owns 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated they have had several occasions were the vehicle lunged forward while idling. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and they were unable to duplicate the failure. the failure mileage was 50,000 and the current mileage was 56,000.

I have a 2005 le freestyle (front wheel drive) that we purchased new. i have experienced the sudden surging/lurching over the past year or so, but it was so occasional and subtle that i thought i was imagining it. then this week i almost hit a car in the school car rider line and it was definitely not my imagination. the car suddenly lurched forward (not subtly!) when i was stopped with my foot on the brake. it was a hot day & i'd just turned on the ac so my son would be comfortable (i usually don't use the ac that much). also last week i almost hit a car when my car surged while i was backing out of a parking space (again, i'd just turned on the ac because i had other people w/ me).because my incidents have increased this summer during the hot weather i feels as though it's a safe hazard and needs to be recalled asap.. *tr

Tl*the contact owns 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated the vehicle stalled and surged forward while driving at a lower speed. the vehicle was not inspected by a dealer or local mechanic. the failure mileage was unknown, but the current mileage was 117,000.

I have had my car accelerate without my foot being on the pedal. this would usually happen as i would get ready to go into reverse or just putting the car in gear to go forward. i immediately brake hard to stop the problem, which solves the issue. my accelerator has also had problems getting stuck and i have to pull it forward with my foot. this began about a year ago, and happens occasionally. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that the vehicle would exhibit an unusual increase in engine rpms and independently accelerate forward or in reverse without warning. the contact would shut off the engine and when restarting, the vehicle would resume normal operation. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was awaiting repairs. the vin was not available. the current and failure mileage was approximately 102,000.

On march 4th 2010 i was backing out of my sisters driveway when my car surged and caused me to back into her neighbors garage across the alley. since then i have had numerous close calls from almost hitting pedestrians in cross walks to almost hitting the front of stores, or other vehicles while attempting to pull into or back out of parking spots. the car also surges at stop lights. i have started putting my car in park while idling so that i don't end up in an accident. in may of 2012 i hit a metal fence post while attempting to park my car at the local rodeo. the car is dangerous & i do not allow my daughters, who are both old enough to drive, to drive my vehicle. ford needs to recall this dangerous malfunction before someone is seriously injured.

Our freestyle has experienced mild but worsening unintended acceleration for two years now, but it was always "mild" and did not cause the car to lurch forward even when the driver's foot was hard on the brake pedal. then we had a new problem: no cold air from the ac at idle. we responded (6/11) to a mailed promotion from hertrich ford (easton md) for an ac "tune up." they did nothing but add dye to our refrigerant and "clean" our air ducts with disinfectant. so we turned to the owners' forum, myfordfreestyle.com, and quickly diagnosed the problem: a seized-up pressure control valve. apparently ford dealers refuse to perform this simple repair (part cost $40) and will only replace the entire ac compressor ($800 + labor). so we ordered the valve online and had a competent local mechanic replace the valve (1-hour labor plus cost of refrigerant). the ac is "good as new", but the unintended acceleration is now much worse. the incidents always occur at very low to no speed and when maneuvering the car (i.e. parking, k-turning, etc.). in all of these situations, both the ac and the power steering pump are demanding/drawing near-maximum power from an essentially idling engine, nearly stalling the engine; the electronic engine/idle control then kicks-in and hugely "over-reacts" by revving the engine to 2,000+ rpm. even with your foot on the brake, an automatic in drive is going to surge quite far at 2000+ rpm. please look at the myfordfreestyle.com website: note that almost all of the complaints about unintended acceleration come during hot weather months and a few also note the problem is much worse with the ac on. it took us less than 30 minutes on the website to diagnose both the ac problem and unintended acceleration problem. it is inconceivable that ford has not been aware of both of these problems for years. (surely ford's customer relations staff monitor owner forums).

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while sitting at a complete stop with the brake depressed, the vehicle abnormally accelerated. the contact then applied extreme pressure to the brakes and was able to stop the vehicle. the contact stated the failure would occur whenever the vehicle was being operated. the dealer performed a diagnostic test and found that the throttle had failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 55,000 and the current mileage was 55,003. updated 11/9/10 *cn updated 11/16/10 *bf updated 11/23/10

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds the vehicle stalled. also, the contact mentioned that the vehicle accelerated and lunged forward without any warnings. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage was 87,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds for a year the driver noticed that all the warning lights would illuminate on the instrumental panel on a intermittent basis. the vehicle would also stall on different occasions without warning. the vehicle was inspected by a dealer who informed the contact that the instrument cluster had failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired for the instrument cluster. the contact also stated that when trying to decelerate the vehicle it surge forward. the vehicle was also repaired for the instrument cluster for this failure as well. the failure continued to occur for the mentioned failures. the failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that whenever the vehicle came to a complete stop, she had to shift into park so that the vehicle would not accelerate on its own. the vehicle had accelerated on its own multiple times where the contact was forced to apply extreme pressure to the brakes in order to stop the vehicle. the dealer was contacted and stated that the throttle needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired since the parts were on back order. the failure and current mileages were 55000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while driving 55 mph the vehicle would not accelerate. the contact pulled over, turn the vehicle off and then restarted it; however, the vehicle continued not to accelerate. the failure has occurred on three occasions. the instrument cluster and the gear shift remained in drive. the gear shift console and the throttle place assembly were also repaired by a local mechanic. the contact is concerned about the safety risk since a crash could have occurred due to a lack of acceleration. the failure mileage was 96,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while the contact was driving approximately 10 mph approaching a stop sign, the brake pedal was engaged and the vehicle began to surge, followed by the illumination of the engine fail safe mode message and the check engine warning indicator. the failures occurred intermittently during extremely hot weather temperatures. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer four times for diagnosis; however they were unable to duplicate the problem or determine the cause of failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 67,772.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that when reversing or with the brake depressed and moving forward, the vehicle would suddenly accelerate without warning. the failure was experienced several times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where a diagnostic was performed but the dealer was unable to locate a failure code. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage was 90,000.

Car is accelerating on its own hard on shifting into drive or reverse. mostly on low pulling out speed when you turn the steering out of a parking spot at every time. hope the recall comes into effect on these hard time or before someone gets killed. thank you for your time to look into our safety.

I have a 2005 ford freestyle about a month ago started to accelerate by itself for very short seconds. as time passed accelerations were stronger. i notice they were more noticeable when turning the wheel while in reverse. a week ago as soon as i put the car on reverse revolution when up quickly and i hit a pole . the car remained accelerate so i turned it off. haven't had the time to take it to a service station to check it out. *tr

I noticed that my car would speed up as i turned into parking places at low speed. told my non-ford mechanic to take a look in nov. 2009. he suggested a fuel system cleanup. it seemed to work until august 2010 when my children's school started a carpool line for after school pickup. it is hot in my city in august, so i spent probably 20 minutes idling with the ac on. when i would start to let up on the brake as the line began to move forward, my vehicle's engine would rev up and my car would lurch forward without my foot ever coming fully off the brake. it did not appear to happen if i turned the ac off. to compensate i would turn car off and roll windows down if i knew i would be waiting more than a few minutes, but when the temp is 100+ outside it is miserable to do this. once the weather cools off (below 90) the lunging seems to go away. the same problem happened in august 2011, and again in august 2012. this august it has been much worse. sometimes i have just started my car when i experience the lunging. finally took car to ford and was told that i need throttle body replaced for $900. because i also need a new alternator (and have replaced rear shocks and engine mount in last 4 months), i opted not to repair at this time. i have to be so careful in traffic for fear of causing an accident, and it appears i am not the only one! this is an extremely dangerous situation, and i am hoping that ford will issue a recall as this is not what i would consider "routine maintenance" nor a rare instance of mechanical failure. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated when shifting into neutral or drive, the engine rpms would abnormally increase. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the throttle control was yet the failure persisted. the failure mileage was 71,000 and the current mileage was 86,000. updated 11/03/10. *lj the consumer stated the problem would occur when the weather was hot and after long drives. updated 11/04/10 only once occurance since new throttle body replaced, that after a 6 hour drive in high heat, sitting at stop light engine started revving. shut down and restarted, was ok; no occurences since then. smch

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while the vehicle was idling, the rpms increased 2500 to 3000 without vehicle acceleration. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the throttle body was replaced. the failure and current mileages were 42130.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. when applying pressure to the accelerator pedal at 45 mph, the vehicle would not accelerate. he was able to pull to the side of the road to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, and the technician concluded that the throttle body failed. the vehicle has not been repaired due to the unavailability of the part. the failure mileage was 47,900. the current mileage was 48,100. the vehicle identification number was unavailable.

2006 ford freestyle would be driving and suddenly the car would jump forward and the fail safe engine light would come on. then car would only drive at 20 mph which is very dangerous on the freeway. *tr

1. early last year, my wife and i noticed that the vehicle developed a tendency to lunge (accelerate) when braking toward a stoplight or a parking spot. 2. the frequency of the occurrence increases once the vehicle engine is warmed up to operating temperature or after the vehicle has been driven long distances. 3. last september, we took the vehicle to a local ford service center to have it looked at. the problem was identified as a faulty throttle body. we were told at the time that the part was not available, and we would be notified when the part became available. we have not received that call. we were also informed that the repair would be approximately $600.00. internet research found that this is a apparently a very common problem with this vehicle, with some owners reporting that their vehicle is no longer operational. i feel that this is a safety issue. i also feel that ford, like toyota has recently, should initiate a recall to fix the problem. at the very least, they need to make the part available, so that the repair can be made. as far as i know, the part is still not available. *tr

My car is lunging forwards/backwards and my motor revs up at the time this lunging occurs. sometimes it happens while i am sitting at a red light, stop sign, or drive thru (anytime the car is on and my foot it on the brake) and sometimes it happens right after i put the car in drive or reverse as i go to release the brake pedal (before putting my foot on the gas). i have to hurry and press the brake back down before hitting someone or something. this is very scary for i have almost hit people walking in crosswalks, cars in parking lots, and have almost ran into back side of my house where i park on a daily basis. after having this happen to me today on my lunch, i went online to see if there was a recall for this problem and found that many other people are experiencing this and there has not been a recall but it is or was under investigation. i also noticed others have had to have their air conditioner repaired and/or motor mounts fixed. i have also had to repair the same exact things, done by my dealership. i would have the lunging problem and then it would stop for a while and then start again. i didn't realize this until reading about others but i, like them, experience this worse during the summer months when it is hot weather. other than this lunging and motor revving problem i have been satisfied with my car. after looking online this is obviously a ford problem and is not fair to the customers to have to pay to have this problem fixed. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated while driving 35 mph her vehicle stalled. the fail safe engine light illuminated on the dashboard. the contact shut the vehicle off, restarted it and was able to drive normally. the dealer stated that the failure could be related to the throttle body. the contact continued to experience multiple failures and the check engine light remained illuminated. the dealer inspected the vehicle and advised the contact that the vehicle could not be repaired since the part was on national back order. the manufacturer advised the contact to purchase the part from the junk yard. the contact requested a rental vehicle and the manufacturer denied the request since the warranty had expired. the vehicle has not yet been repaired. the failure mileage was 100,000 and the current mileage was 100,200.

I have a 2005 ford freestyle. i have had several lunging incidents where the car feels like it wants to lung forward or backward when backing out a parking space etc.. the first time i reported this incident was on 08/25/09. the next time was on 09/22/09. the dealer ordered a new throttle body. there were so many issues with the throttle body on this car that they were on back order. the dealer allowed me to drive for 5697 miles before the part arrived. i requested a rental under warranty and they said they could not justify a rental. on 02/08/10 my new throttle body was installed. today is 02/22/2012 and i am having the same issue all over again. the ford freestyle is by far the worst vehicle i have ever owned. i am on my second set of (rear) brake pads and rotors. i have had the engine mounts replaced. our air conditioner only works properly during the winter. i have found numerous pages of forums with people from all over the united states dealing with the exact same issues on the exact same cars. i recently discovered that a class action law suit has been filed against ford for the throttle body issue. i have pages of documented issues with this car. *tr

At various times the car will lunge forward while foot is on the brake (pulling into a parking space, into a parking lot, idling in heavy traffic). failure started occurring around 40,000 miles. 8/2009 vehicle shut down while driving. towed to repair facility where they replaced the throttle body assembly with a used one as a new part was not available (apparently was in a redesign phase) we are now (7/2010) experiencing the same sudden accelerations we had prior to it shutting down in august of 2009. *tr

Car would hesitate when pushing on gas pedal, then suddenly catch and accelerate after some time pressing on the accelerator. had it checked previously with the suggestion to replace fuel filter. after a few months, problem got worse, another service station found the throttle body needed to be replaced, the throttle position sensor was bad. had it replaced at a cost of $672.33 parts and labor. found out this problem is shared by many ford freestyle owners, checked with local ford dealer if a recall had been done or a technical service bulletin, was told not and they would not do anything for me about it. *tr

The car stalled while i was in las vegas. i was driving on the street and all of the sudden the speed went down and i could control the speed ("failed engine safe mode" appeared in the panel). i parked the vehicle, turned it off and re-started it. the problem didn't happen again. on my way back, took it to fairway ford in placentia, california. they replaced the throttle body, air intake and engine roll restrictor. car was ok until 6/6/14 with 65,330 miles when the same thing happened while driving around my house, took it to fairway ford and it was recall 12n03 on the vehicle (never received a notice from ford), they cleaned the throttle body and re-programmed the pcm. 2 mos. later, 8/28/14 same thing happened, and fairway ford told me they have to replace the throttle body assembly again and i have to pay $860. called ford customer service at 800-392-3673, talked to [xxx] and she said i could get any financial assistance because the recall had expired. i escalated the situation, and a supervisor will call me back on tuesday 9/2/14. if this happened on the freeway i could get rear ended and be killed. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
