We have classified the 82 complaints from 2005 Ford Freestyle about ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING into the following categories.
At random times when the car is idling or at low speeds with no contact with the gas pedal, the engine surges. this occurs in forward or reverse, with or without the brake being applied. at times, the surging is severe and requires a lot of pressure on the brake to hold the car in place. last year, it seemed to occur more often with the ac on. the compressor died, so we had it replaced, but that did not fix the issue. we have not crashed into anything but have come very close. it is troubling since it occurs at low speeds, meaning we're in close proximity to cars, people, and buildings when the engine surges. *tr
Ford freestyle stalls and shuts down while driving, disabling the powered steering among other things and causes very unsafe situations. this will usually start with some hesitations of the engine and then it dies. often it stalls while taking off from standstill as well either forward or going in reverse. sometimes there is surging of the engine as well, especially while using ac or turning the steering wheel. this has caused many dangerous situations on the road where all of the sudden we stall in middle of traffic. the car has been to the dealer about three times for these issues, last time for fuel system cleaning but this has not solved the problems. *tr
1- the engine cradle totally rusted out replacement est. 3,000.00 . dealer says not covered 2-the hood is pitted dealer says not covered est.1000.00 3- radiator coolant tube made from steel rusted out and coolant leaked . est 250.00 4-door latches fail in cold weather door will not stay closed .dealer says its been fixed under recall .its still a problem .
The vehicle started surging without foot on the gas pedal. this occurs at low speeds or when stopping. have had to rapidly press the brake pedal and hold it to avoid accidents. when the surging occurs, many times the vehicle goes into fail-safe engine mode which does not allow one to shift into higher gears. check engine light stays on after occurrence and failsafe engine mode was solved by pulling over, killing the motor, waiting, and then restarting. *kb
After starting the vehicle and putting it in gear, the car lungs (accelerates). this happens in reverse or forward motion. *tr
I have a 2005 ford freestyle that has been surging forward when i am at a complete stop & the engine fail safe mode with a wrench has shown up. i have 4 kids & this has happened on the highway with them in the car on the highway & it is very scary to lose power on the highway & try to get to the shoulder without getting hit by another car. *kb
When stopped or moving slow to make a turn the engine accelerates on its own , this happens going forwards or in reverse and happens more with the ac turned on. *tr
Throttle body problem, car doesn't start. when it does start black, smelly spoke comes out of the tail pipe. issue started around march brought to garage said it was in need of a tune up. had that done $400 car still did they same thing not starting. worked fine for awhile. again the cold weather hit. not starting again. brought car in again. took 5 days to figure out the issue. $600 part plus labor $500 plus rental for 5 days $400. after reading several complaint on the same issue i am very surprised this hasn't been taken care of already. this part should be recalled and ford should refund all costs associated with it. *tr
I noticed on yesterday's news that my vehicle and problem is under investigation, so i want to add my voice to the number who have had a similar problem. my 2005 ford freestyle lurches unexpectedly. it will only occur for a few seconds. i have owned the car for 1.5 years, and it has happened on 2 separate occasions. both times i was traveling very slowly preparing to enter a parking stall. fortunately i already had my foot on the brake, so not damage or injuries occurred. *tr
Vehicle surges forward and in reverse, even when foot is applied to the brake. this happens on a daily basis nearly every time the vehicle is driven and is very dangerous, especially when in traffic and while maneuvering in parking lots. the surges are unpredictable and occur mainly when the vehicle is initially placed into drive or reverse, but can happen randomly while just sitting with it in gear. it has been happening for over two years now. the engine safe light has come on two occasions in the past two months as well, but has cleared itself after switching the car off, then back on. *ln
Scary car. a couple of times when car is idle/foot on brake the car would surge forward on its own. this is creepy. first time happened when parking in front of a wall. luckily, i had enough room to not hit the front. i just came home and rolled into parking space. my foot was still on the brake but out of nowhere it just went by itself so my natural response was to brake really hard. it slowed the surging, but dang it! it scared the begezzy out of me. if i wasn't alert, i think that wall would damage the front car...let alone hit someone(s) if they are in front of this idle car. second time when my husband rolled into the mall's parking space and it did it too. i sat next to him and it was just freaky weird. it happened 3 other times also. ford better recall on this problem seeing how many complaints are posted online already. i had to look it up online and found a major car magazine stated it was a major problem. if they don't do anything about this, i think i will have to switch to another car maker. this ford freestyle 2005 awd limited is a scary car. *tr
Throttle body replaced after car did not start - 2005 ford freestyle. prior to replacement, jerking/lurching of the vehicle once started and foot off the gas pedal. hesitated to start on many occasions if car is parked on an incline as if no gasoline in vehicle. also, on occasions, car stalled in the middle of the street, but started up after several tries. during replacement, ford representative indicated that the part just went out - nothing could have prevented it. cost $600+ to fix which also caused additional parts (spark plugs, fuel sensor) required. diagnosis indicated, throttlebody plates stuck, fuel sensor injector pressure replaced). dealership kept old parts except spark plugs. *tr
The dash board info reads safe mode (engine failure) the lite and a wrench appear on the data on the dash. the vehicle motor still on goes down to 1 to 3 mph while driving, on street or freeway, the car have to be shut off and restarted and proceeds to run for awhile and does the same thing and no one can seem to find out what the problem is.it have been worked on by license mechanics several times and the problem is still there.. need a solution. it is a unsafe situations. *tr
My 2005 ford freestyle with 58,000 miles suddenly looses all the instrument panel indications and the engine then dies. restart is possible and instruments then return to normal. this usually occurs within a few minutes of starting the car but has happened at speed on the highway. the dealer claims this is a common freestyle problem and the entire instrument cluster has to be replaced at a cost of $700.00. why has this obvious safety issue not been subject to a recall? *tr
2005 ford freestyle 53,000 miles experiencing loss of power with wrench light on instrument panel illuminating while driving. first trip to dealer, the service department replaced air filter indicating that the filter had slipped out of the housing and was blocking air flow. within 2 weeks we have dropped the car off for a second visit for same power failure issue. when will ford issue a recall for this widespread mechanical problem? how many crashes, or deaths have resulted from this issue? *tr
2005 ford freestyle-the ac compressor and drier was replaced at about 93,000 miles through the extended warranty. it only cost me 75.00 . no big deal right. the total bill was nearly 1600.00 for the warranty company. now at 125,000 miles, it has gone out again. no warranty. i've to pay. it is going to cost about 1600.00. now they can't find a compressor and are back ordered until april of 2011. i have never had a compressor go out on any other car i have owned. approximately 20 cars in thirty five years of driving. several with over 250,000 miles. if ac compr. are on back order, many must be having the same problem. i need help. this is a rip off. *tr
Have a 2005 ford freestyle- with a throttle body issue. the part is on back order- no rental given by company. "fail safe engine mode" and check engine light is one because of it- they insist that it is safe to drive (i drive 75 miles back and forth to work everyday). i am sorry- but driving that many miles- with my children in the car as well- while the engine is failing- is never safe. because of the jolting forward and backwards while in this mode- i can't even count how many times i have almost hit another car, or a pedestrian! what happens when the engine does fail- is ford going to replace that? *tr
The vehicle on a very hot day 95 degrees out with the a/c on high was put into reverse with foot on the brake and the car surged backwards and went into safety mode. had to drive the car home in safety mode. my wife says it happened a few times to her also. the upper motor mount on the engine has totally fell apart, the rubber bushing dried out and is gone. called ford and they told me the part is $230.00. *tr
2005 ford freestyle - i am having problems with the car randomly lurching it has happened while backing up and moving forward - after the lurch it may be fine other times it shuts off or the car goes into fail safe mode. particular worries me while backing up in parking lots and such worried it would cause me to hit someone/ something. it has done this on quite a few occasions over several months and seems to have become worse during the hotter months. *tr
For several months we had noticed that when we shifted our vehicle into gear (forward or reverse) the car would lurch forward/backward as we came off the brake. several weeks ago, my wife had the vehicle in line at my daughters elementary school driveway waiting to pick her up. as she released pressure on the brake, the vehicle unexpectedly jumped forward and she needed to slam on the brakes to stop it. the engine then went into "failsafe mode" and ran on diminished performance until she was able to get the vehicle home. upon examination, it was determined that the throttle body needed to be replaced on a car with 65,000 miles. it was the faulty throttle body that had been causing the car to unexpectedly lurch/surge forward. i am filing this complaint because it appears that it is not an isolated issue for the vehicle and it is a family vehicle which means that there are many of them sitting in school parking lots and pick up lanes. as you can imagine a vehicle that unexpectedly surges forward in an area full of children caused a great deal of concern to my wife and i. in my research there appears to be technical service bulletins issued by ford regarding this matter and although my car had been in for it 60k service just months before, there was no mention of a problem with the throttle body. the ford dealer wasted no time telling us that the part is not covered under their extended power train warranty which i had on the vehicle. quite honestly, that was not my main concern as a child could have easily been harmed by this faulty throttle body and the symptoms it produces. the dealer replaced the throttle body and cleaned the injectors and the vehicle is running better. *tr
When brakes are engaged, vehicle attempts to speed up. have to bare down on brakes to slow down. sometimes this causes the engine to go into a back up safety mode. twice vehicle cut off and had to be restarted. *tr
First incident resulted in the car stalling multiple times, when started it would stutter, rpms couldn't get into normal range and when trying to put in gear it would stall out. the wrench light came on and i was finally able to start while keeping my foot on the gas pedal. once driving could only reach 40mph. since the first incident the frequency of problems has increased. shortly after that first incident it started surging (rpm's rev way up when putting it in to gear) to the point that it happens now practically every time i start the car. at times, the surge is so strong that even with my foot firmly pressed on the brake, the car still moves. a huge concern of ours is in parking areas, it is very scary to have the car surge with people moving in front or in back of the vehicle. i recently had a collision with a tree while backing up. i firmly believe the car surged after i had started backing up resulting in the collision. i have called the dealership multiple times and understand that the throttle body linkage is thought to be the issue. my sister has a lincoln ls that was recalled for this exact issue - she had the part replaced as a result of the recall even though she had never experienced the surging/stalling described. after doing some research, i found that this problem is much more prevalent than i thought and hope that a recall will be issued to get this corrected before someone gets hurt. *tr
My 2005 ford freestyle sel has experiences issues with surging, stalling and inability to accelerate. the problems started at least 2 years ago (2009) at which time i called my local dealership to inquire on recalls (warranty was out) and was told there were no recalls to fix this issue. since the surge has increased in frequency, most any time i start the vehicle and put it in gear, it will surge (rpm's rev up on their own). having my foot on the brake at times still does not hold the car completely still and has concerned me on more occasions than not when in parking lots at stores with people moving around my vehicle. the stall & inability to accelerate happens less frequently but has happened a handful of times and always results in the check engine light (wrench) coming on. the vehicle will not perform as it should until the check engine has been cleared. i recently backed into a tree at my work and firmly believe it happened due to a surge after i put the car in gear and started backing up. i did not have enough time to react (stopping the vehicle) before it hit the tree. i've owned my car since 2007 - my sister has a lincoln ls that was recalled just before my car started these episodes. her car was recalled for everything i've stated above (even though it had never done it) - the throttle body linkage was replaced. i've called the dealership on numerous occasions, even stating that her lincoln received the recall that my car needs, with absolutely no help or suggestions. *tr
2005 ford freestyle limited awd. the vehicle, when a/c unit is on and outside temperature is between 80 and 90 degree f, surges forward violently, approx. 1 to 2 feet, while trying to slow down or stop. then engine goes into safe mode and stalls. when researching this problem on the website myfordfreestyle.com there was information about the possible cause of the surge. the ford service dept. recommends replacing the throttle body due to excess sludge build up inside the unit. $700.00 plus fix. i took my car into the ford service dept. in my area, gave the description of the problem, they said it was probably the throttle body and that i would have to get this replaced and that the car was unsafe to drive due to the surging. ford says the throttle body is on back order. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while driving in reverse the rpms would increase which prevented the transmission from shifting in gear. the vehicle would also lunged backwards intermittently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that there were no related recalls. the dealer also stated that they were aware of the transmission problems. the contact does not know if they will repair the failure or not. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure and current mileages were 116,000. the consumer stated when he shifted the gear into reverse, the engine revved without any pressure to the accelerator pedal. it was only when he applied heavy pressure to the brake did the engine rev down to idle. updated evoq 11/15/10
At slow speeds, at various times, there are unintended surges in speed. they are usually more common when the air conditioning is in use. the may occur when in forward or reverse. my local dealer advised that ford was looking into the problem, but i have nothing definite about what the problem is and whether or not ford will pay for any repairs. i have since learned that the problem is quite common and is being investigated. i do not recall filing a formal complaint before. *tr
My 2005 ford freestyle has been having problems with surging forward especially when moving slowly back and forth into a parking spot. sometimes right after the idle surges, the idle will also suddenly drop, and now at times it even stalls. the surge causes the car to accelerate and i'm forced to modulate the brakes to avoid unexpected movement of the car. it usually happens when conditions are warm, the car is warm, and the ac is on. i have taken this car to ford in the past, and they have not been able to correct it. i am taking it in again as the stalling problem has become more pronounced. when i googled for problems with ford freestyles doing this, i found others have registered complaints exactly the same as mine. *tr
05 ford freestyle surges at low speeds, particularly in reverse and/or when the ac is turned on. car began stalling while driving. auto mechanic indicated that the cause was a faulty throttle body and needed to be replaced but not available from ford for many months. very dangerous considering car can stall or surge at any moment. *tr
2005 ford freestyle has been surging and lurching without depressing gas pedal. while stopped but in either drive or reverse, once foot is removed from brake pedal, the car suddenly accelerates without warning. the last time it happened, the wrench light and the check engine light came on and it went into failsafe mode. took it to the dealer and it is the throttle body. the part won't be in stock until august and the dealer is recommending the vehicle not be driven until the throttle body is replaced. this is a very unsafe condition and could have resulted in a serious accident had a pedestrian been in front of or behind my car when it accelerated without warning and without the gas pedal being pushed. *tr
In 2010, my car would go into "engine failsafe mode" and i would have to shut it off and restart it. after a few times, is started lurching forward when it was idling. at that time, i had an extended warranty and the throttle body was replaced. today, april 10, 2013, i was driving to work and the "engine failsafe mode" kicked on twice and the second time, the "check engine" light went on and stayed on. i was able to make it safely to work and decided to take it to a shop across the street from my office to have a diagnostic run. it cost $75 and they told me that the throttle body needs to be replaced! i called ford and was told that all that they can do is clean and reset the computer under a customer satisfaction recall. i plan to drop it off today at a dealership on my way home. unfortunately, the car now has over 109,000 miles and is not covered under warranty. my complaint is that i replaced the throttle body in 2010 and it is malfunctioning again. i was told by ford that if this doesn't work, it will need to be replaced at my expense. this appears to be a common issue with this car and i want to see if there is anything that can be done to make sure that this is fixed correctly and the cost is taken on by ford for the faulty part! *tr
The vehicle started surging without foot on the gas pedal. this occurs at low speeds or when stopping. have had to rapidly press the brake pedal and hold it to avoid accidents. when the surging occurs, many times the vehicle goes into fail-safe engine mode which does not allow one to shift into higher gears. this caused a problem on the interstate when caught in stop and go traffic. could not accelerate after surge-engine dying-failsafe engine mode. check engine light stays on after occurrence and failsafe engine mode was solved by pulling over, killing the motor, waiting, and then restarting. surging is causing a stress on the transmission which now appears to have slack in it. *tr
We started noticing the engine surge a few months ago whenever we shifted out of park or neutral. the rpm's jumped around 400-600 above idle and now are over 700-800 with the a/c on. so far, we have not experienced any damage to the vehicle. i took the vehicle to my local ford dealer, blackwell ford in plymouth, mi and was told i needed the throttle body needed replacement at a cost of over $800.00. the vehicle has 94000 miles on it and aside from that problem, we have been pleased with it. *kb
2005 ford freestyle sudden acceleration, quick acceleration on its own during idle or as soon as you let go of the brake, dealer has already looked at vehicle several times. throttle body, cleaned, new airfilters have been replaced, this has been an occurring problem for he last 5 months vehicle has 75,000 miles and the dealer mentioned they have 6 others with the same problem. *tr
When sitting idle with a/c on, engine revs on it's own and has gone into failsafe mode. when going from park to reverse, car lunges while in reverse causing a significant safety issue if the brake is not applied quick enough. the car also lunges forward when going from park to drive. the car has a tendency to lunge at a stoplight and then shut off and go into failsafe mode forcing a restart of the car once it has been taken out of drive and back into park. this has been going on for a few months, but we can't afford to fix it until next month. even when we do go to order a new throttle body through ford, which is what was recommended to fix the problem, it's apparently on a horrendous backorder until further notice. *tr
When stopped or moving slow to make a turn the engine accelerates on its own , this happens going forwards or in reverse and happens more with the ac turned on. *js
My vehicle has had a habit of lurching forward in an involuntary motion. many times i've gone from park to drive, with brakes applied, the rpm increase and a strong lurch forward is done. even with the brakes applied it nearly forces itself to go forward when i thro it in reverse, it will repeat this involuntary action. when i am at a stop light or stop sign it will want to do the same action forward. i fear i will some day hit a vehicle or people in parking lot. i have taken it to my ford dealer and the computer does not give any faults. i have taken it some four times for the same thing. in addition, i keep informing them of the power steering. it makes loud humming and grinding noise, but the dealer keeps telling me their is nothing wrong with the system. the air conditioner also has a fault, when not in use it will run by itself and blow cold air. i have to turn it on and off until it stops blowing. once it did it with the engine off. i have also complained to the dealer but with the same results, their is nothing wrong. i keep asking myself, how can i make the ford auto maker responsible is the vehicle lurches forward and hits another car or worse, i can hit a pedestrian? *tr
About 2 yrs ago during the beginning of the summer i noticed that my air condition on my 2005 ford freestyle was not cooling. sitting still you will think you have on the heat. i also noticed that on the passenger side it much warmer that than the driver side. cools ok in the mornings when it is not so hot but later in the day you can forget about the air. i have had the freon check more than once was told it was not low. this year it worst than ever. before it would start to cool about 20 miles further down the road. not now! i was told by the mechanic also the the motor brack is broken. what is next. i also had the lunging problem that was fixed, only because it was still under warranty. a car that is only 7 years old sure has had lot of problems. *tr
The car started showing hesitation when accelerating and making a strange noise early in 2010. this condition got progressively worse until one day, while driving on the freeway, the engine would not respond to the gas pedal being depressed, the wrench light came on, and i was forced to coast to the side of the road. i turned the car off for a few minutes and when i attempted to restart it, the gas pedal seemed to be working again. took the car to jones ford the next day and they told me the throttle body was bad and replaced it to the tune of $638.97. date of service was april 1, 2020. mileage at time of failure was 61,540 everything seemed fine for a few months but i started noticing the hesitation on acceleration again. took it to summerville ford on july 21, 2010. i didn't wait for a complete failure since it was extremely dangerous to lose power on the freeway with a whole car load of kids! jones ford said the throttle body was bad again and replaced it under warranty this time. checked for codes and got code #u0141. mileage at time of replacement was 65,207. within the last couple of weeks i have noticed similar conditions to the last two times the throttle body failed. yesterday i was parking and the car surged forward as i let my foot of the brake, almost causing me to hit the car in the spot in front of me. i have no choice but to keep driving it until something is done by ford about this dangerous condition. i was also told that the motor mount needs to be replaced. i also have replaced the 2/3 row seat pivot once during warranty but it failed again in 2010 and i haven't been able to afford to replace it. the a/c compressor stopped working this summer. still not fixed. i have replaced my tires twice in seven years. i have replaced both sets of brakes. ford needs to address these common failures. before someone gets hurt! *tr
Our freestyle has experienced mild but worsening unintended acceleration for two years now, but it was always "mild" and did not cause the car to lurch forward even when the driver's foot was hard on the brake pedal. then we had a new problem: no cold air from the ac at idle. we responded (6/11) to a mailed promotion from hertrich ford (easton md) for an ac "tune up." they did nothing but add dye to our refrigerant and "clean" our air ducts with disinfectant. so we turned to the owners' forum, myfordfreestyle.com, and quickly diagnosed the problem: a seized-up pressure control valve. apparently ford dealers refuse to perform this simple repair (part cost $40) and will only replace the entire ac compressor ($800 + labor). so we ordered the valve online and had a competent local mechanic replace the valve (1-hour labor plus cost of refrigerant). the ac is "good as new", but the unintended acceleration is now much worse. the incidents always occur at very low to no speed and when maneuvering the car (i.e. parking, k-turning, etc.). in all of these situations, both the ac and the power steering pump are demanding/drawing near-maximum power from an essentially idling engine, nearly stalling the engine; the electronic engine/idle control then kicks-in and hugely "over-reacts" by revving the engine to 2,000+ rpm. even with your foot on the brake, an automatic in drive is going to surge quite far at 2000+ rpm. please look at the myfordfreestyle.com website: note that almost all of the complaints about unintended acceleration come during hot weather months and a few also note the problem is much worse with the ac on. it took us less than 30 minutes on the website to diagnose both the ac problem and unintended acceleration problem. it is inconceivable that ford has not been aware of both of these problems for years. (surely ford's customer relations staff monitor owner forums).
Cracked engine mount on ford freestyle. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while the contact was driving approximately 10 mph approaching a stop sign, the brake pedal was engaged and the vehicle began to surge, followed by the illumination of the engine fail safe mode message and the check engine warning indicator. the failures occurred intermittently during extremely hot weather temperatures. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer four times for diagnosis; however they were unable to duplicate the problem or determine the cause of failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 67,772.
2005 ford freestyle surges and lunges forward while foot is brake. sitting at a red light with my foot on the brakes the rpms surge and the car starts lunging forward pulling me out into the intersection. the car then shutdown for a second and went into limp home mode. luckily i was able to put the car in reverse and backup before i was hit by the oncoming traffic. took the car to the dealer and was told the throttle body assembly would have to be replaced but the part was on a 3 month back order. dealer would not advise me the car was safe to drive! *tr
Sudden loss of power while driving, has happened 3 times already. happens when it's rainy, after not driving the car for a day. can be really bad if happens on the highway - you step on gas and there's no response (the engine is running) - the car can essentially stop by itself in the middle of the road. date of first incident reported, mileage at the time - 90,000. *tr
Many times when i put the car in gear, whether it's forward or reverse, the car surges. i have almost gotten into accidents because of it. stepping on the brakes helps but doesn't completely stop the initial surge. *tr
I have a 2005 ford freestyle. i have had several lunging incidents where the car feels like it wants to lung forward or backward when backing out a parking space etc.. the first time i reported this incident was on 08/25/09. the next time was on 09/22/09. the dealer ordered a new throttle body. there were so many issues with the throttle body on this car that they were on back order. the dealer allowed me to drive for 5697 miles before the part arrived. i requested a rental under warranty and they said they could not justify a rental. on 02/08/10 my new throttle body was installed. today is 02/22/2012 and i am having the same issue all over again. the ford freestyle is by far the worst vehicle i have ever owned. i am on my second set of (rear) brake pads and rotors. i have had the engine mounts replaced. our air conditioner only works properly during the winter. i have found numerous pages of forums with people from all over the united states dealing with the exact same issues on the exact same cars. i recently discovered that a class action law suit has been filed against ford for the throttle body issue. i have pages of documented issues with this car. *tr
I bought a used 2005 ford freestyle and it has been a good car up until the past 6 months. within those months i have had the engine mounting bracket break and the car, during stop and go driving, will randomly lunge forward or backward. when the car decides to lunge, even with your foot on the break, it is not stopped completely. i have contacted ford about this issue and have done numerous hours of research myself. all of the research that i have done points to the throttle body going bad, however, ford denies that there is any kind of a safety issue and that there is no recall. ford will however, gladly charge me 600.00 to replace it. when there is a safety problem with a vehicle, and random, uncontrollable lunges are a safety problem, the dealer should take responsibility and fix the defective part. with the hundreds of posts that i have read by other freestyle owners with the same problems, most of which have been in the past 2 years, the part should defintely be recalled and fixed by ford. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. he experienced unintended vehicle acceleration while driving in reverse gear or at a complete stop. the dealer replaced the throttle body; however, after the repair was made the engine began to stall. the dealer was notified, and a technician concluded that the repair parts were on back order; therefore, no repairs were made. the failure mileage was 78,000 and the current mileage was 84,000.
I was in a parking space in my 2005 ford freestyle. when i put the car in reverse the engine revved up and the car went back very fast before stalling out. the dash board read "fail safe mode". i brought the car to my local ford dealer and they said it's the throttle body - a part on back order until nov 09 and costs $700 plus $300 labor ~ and they sent me home with my car!! very unsure of driving my vehicle until then with my 2 young children nevermind the dangers to other people. ford issued a technical bulletin back in dec 05 for this exact issue. a simple google search on line shows that their are many complaints regarding this issue. why has there not been a recall yet. clearly there needs to be an investigation into this issue that seems to be a common occurrence for the 2005 ford freestyle. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that the engine failed in safe mode. while driving at various speeds, the engine shuts off. the ford manufacturer stated that they did not have the parts available to repair the vehicle. the failure mileage was 70,000.
When the vehicle was put in reverse the car would jerk and almost stall, then when shifted to drive the car would stall, when the car was shut off and the put into drive the car ran rough, i had taken it to the dealer the first time , they told me there was water in the box, i am a certified mechanic, and i never heard of this, i had taken the car back, to the dealer and they had the car for two weeks before they found out it was the throttle body, they didn't have one in stock, they searched across the country , not one to be found , they called ford motor company , they didn't have one either, they said they are trying to find someone to make the part, , it is a die cast part, then it has to be machined then fitted with the sensors, , wire ports and vacuum sockets have to be machined, they are supposed to call me sept 30, 09 to let me know the status, i have a very bad feeling about this, i can almost guarantee the part is not going to be right, as of sept 30 09 they have had my car two months, i think they are going to wait until my extended warranty expires, then the car is good for nothing but a planter in the front yard, i have terminal brain cancer and need my car to carry my wheel chair around, the dealer first gave me a focus, then a taurus, i still cant lift my wheel chair to lay it flat in the trunk, i have asked for something comparable to my 2005 ford freestyle, , which i just lift my chair strait up and put it in, but what this whole problem has created, is a serious safety problem, if this part lets go on the freeway the car will jerk the wheels will lock up and hopefully the car behind is watching , otherwise , this is going to be a serious accident. *tr
