We have classified the 91 complaints from 2005 Ford Freestyle about FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE into the following categories.
Traveling on hwy at approx 60 mph, wrench light came on, "failsafe engine mode" message appeared and car powered down. pulled over, turned car off, waited 1 min, restarted car. message was cleared and car drove as normal. about 20 miles later, same problem, except check engine light and message appeared. pulled over, turned off car, restarted. check engine light and message remained. very low power upon acceleration. problem continued intermittently. received engine code p2111, p2112 relating to throttle body problem. etb had been cleaned 11/13 by dealer per technical service bulletin issued by ford. no problems until 12/14. service performed to reprogram etb, no cleaning was needed. problem recurred 12/23/14. check engine light is on and no power upon acceleration persists. codes indicate etb needs to be replaced. *tr
The problem with this car and the throttle body has been going on for a while. i took the car to the ford dealer but they only cleaned the throttle body when it needed replacement. the last event was in august 1 when while i was driving the fail safe mode came up and the car suddenly lost the power and wouldn't run faster than probably 0.1 mile per hour. this was the second time this happened the first time i was with my kids in a major highway and the car suddenly stop running. thank god i had a chance to steer to the emergency lane. many people are having the same issue with the 2005-2007 freestyle, this is a super safety issue and nobody is doing anything about it. when my car stopped i could have been hit on the back with a worst outcome. i got a tow truck and they took the car to the ford dealer. those people are not helpful at all and treated me with a bad attitude. very expensive to change that's why ford is not getting involved and only offered to clean the part in the extended warranty, knowing that wouldn't fix the problem. ford should have a recall for the throttle body part before somebody gets killed in a very serious accident that this problem could cause. *tr
In drive at 40 mph to 55 mph the car almost stalls and goes i to fail safe mode. in fail safe mode the car runs at 15 mph. the dealer says they can not duplicate the problem. *tr
Me and my wife carpool on third shift to our jobs. upon backing out of the driveway in reverse, the wrench light came on, and an error reading" failsafe engine mode". i was able to make it to work, however i couldn't go fast at all no more than maybe 40. i'm seeing online many with this year and model need or have had new throttle body's put in with no luck coming from it. i'm hoping there's a recall because i have two children and a wife to get around in this one car.i wanna know what the recall is on it if one at all is available. why haven't they corrected it yet after all these years of problems and so many complaints? *tr
Car suddenly slowed to approximately 5 mph and then stopped. accelerator stopped functioning. i waited for ten minutes, turned the engine on and limped home at 5 mph. this breakdown occurred after worked was performed at varsity ford in ann arbor, michigan for this same problem. dealer advised that the worked performed (cleaning the throttle body and reprogramming the powertrain train module) did not work. after detailed discussions with the dealership, i was advised that i needed a complete replacement of the throttle body module at my expense. why should i be held liable for the repair when ford had already admitted that this was a known problem by calling it in for cleaning. this is certainly an issue for the nhtsa to act on. i think that the $882.73 repair bill should be ford's burden, not mine. *tr
Vehicle would surge and loose power at all speeds. at times when pressing the accelerator the car would not respond, then all of the sudden would surge, then would lose power. took it to the dealer recently as they told me that there was a recall. dealer cleaned the throttle body only. now it's worse. i was driving back from the dealer and the car lost power, wrench light on, and left me in the middle lane of the highway. shut the car off and on again and continue but with minimal power. took it to a mechanic who told me that the throttle body is getting stuck. i see this is happened to a lot of freestyle owner, especially from 2005-2007. car is dangerous to drive as it's unpredictable when surges will happen. *tr
Had recall 12n03 performed due to surging, after repair car continued to surge when cold. when approaching stop car would not want to slow down, would put gear in neutral and tach would surge over 2000 rpm's, does this on a consistent basis. continued to drive until car died while driving, got message for throttle body error, took to dealership and was informed that throttle body needs to be replaced at over $600. recall repair done in april and car failed in july. *tr
After quickly crossing traffic and entering my driveway (which is on a downward slope) i released the gas on entering my driveway and applied the brake. just before applying the brake the vehicle lurched. it didn't lurch far, but enough for me to rapidly depress the brake pedal in surprise. one item of note--the low fuel indicator was on and my next stop was to get gas. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that the vehicle would abnormally lunge forward when the brake pedal was released. the contact depressed the brake pedal and stopped the vehicle from accelerating further but the failure recurred as soon as her foot was removed from the brake pedal. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified and informed the contact that there were no recalls for the failure. the failure mileage was 90,000. the vin was not available. updated 7/19/12 *cn the consumer stated a mechanic cleaned the throttle and fuel injection system at a cost of $168. it is working better now. updated 07/23/12
2005 ford freestyle lunging forward, stalling out, and check engine light wrench icon light coming on. it was dangerous to be on the road because of the sudden stopping, and very pore acceleration. after several tries at reading codes discovered it was a bad throttle body. i noticed all of the complaints that were posted on line about this same vehicle and discovered your investigation opened in 2011. repairs were made by myself at the cost of $608.00. also, i noticed the new replacement part had an engineering change that eliminated the anti freeze heater section. i feel something should be done about this problem by recalling the throttle body system used in this ford vehicle. i also was informed by the service center at the ford dealership, where i purchased the throttle body ,that this part was common to be replaced. thank you for looking into this issue. *tr
I purchased my ford freestyle in june 2011 and shortly after my car began lunging forward when the air conditioner was on. my car began doing it in forward and reverse gear. i have taken my car to the dealer twice before. they replaced the air compressor, cleaned the throttle body, and reset the computer. this will treat the problem for awhile but it will always come back. last week i nearly hit a pedestrian in a cross walk when my car decided to lunge forward at a red light with my foot on the brake. my wife has nearly hit cars in drive through lines. again i put my car in the shop and they are doing the same work as before. i have been pushed into intersections and nearly t-boned. i have almost hit cars when trying to back up. this car is not safe because even with my foot on the brake the car can move 5-8 feet. when the car lunges forward or backward it will most of the time rumble then die, which is dangerous when i am sent into an intersection with cars coming at me. sometimes i am able to depress the gas pedal all the way, driving at 4000 rpms and slowly move out of the way. i worry about my family of six safety as well as any innocent that may get hurt because of fords incapability to fix the problem they have created. *tr
Car at a complete stop with foot off gas pedals moves forward unexpectedly and rpms jump to 2000. *tr
My 2005 ford freestyle lunges forward when putting it in drive or reverse. it started a couple of months ago and would only happen once in a while. now it happens almost every day. if your not careful you will hit something. even with your foot on the brake the vehicle will still lunge forward or backward. the problem is worse if the air conditioner is running. i have been told the throttle body is causing the problem but it will cost over $800.00 to fix. i cannot afford this repair and think ford should fix it under a recall due to this being a serious safety problem. *tr
Intially noted the vehicles rpms jump and a quick surge in the engine while traveling approximately 65mphs. this continued to occur radomly at different speeds on several occasions. a service light came on. they replaced an egr valve. put in an fuel treatment. one day later the the light is back on and condition has gotten worse.now the car lunges forward, still randomly, but frequently! have been very fortunate that there has not been any major incidents or accidents, yet!(just ran up a curb) read this is a common condition and is being investigated. i hope something comes of the investigation and soon. this is very alarming and dangerous! today i had the most precious cargo with me....my daughter(who was driving and is currently outraged) and my grandchildren!!!!! *tt
My vehicle surges from time to time and when the air condition is on the car will cut of and go into fail safe mode i've cleaned the throttle body and the problem still occurs. *tr
While backing out of a parking space, the engine surged as if i had hit the accelerator. i immediately hit the brakes and the same thing happened several more times before i had a new throttle body installed at the ford dealership and was told that it was becoming a common problem with the freestyle. my son who has a 2007 freestyle had the same thing happen several months ago and had the same repair done to his.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that the vehicle was parked with the engine running when the vehicle exhibited a small explosion. immediately, gasoline fuel fumes entered into the vehicle cabin. the contact exited the vehicle and found that fuel was leaking from the front passenger side. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where the contact was advised that the fuel clip had fractured. the entire fuel line had to be replaced. the failure mileage was 135,336 and the current mileage was 135,400.
The first time this happened was september 2010. i was in a parking lot with in nashville tn. it was hot and ac was running. the transmission was in reverse, i took my foot off brake and the car accelerated backward without pressing the accelerator. on the date i reported above same situation, in a parking lot, temp outside was over 90 and ac was running. the transmission was in drive and when i took my foot off the brake it accelerated forward. my wife had several incidents similar but she was only aware that the ac was running when the car accelerated with pressing the gas pedal. we were fortunate each time there was enough space to press the brake and stop the vehicle.
2005 ford freestyle lurches forward without any accelerator input or warning. i am sure that it is going to cause an accident or injury. this started at about 140,000 miles the first time, and is getting worse. very dangerous event when it happens. from what i gather from others on line it is a problem with the throttle body. this is for sure a safety issue and flaw in the design and use of the throttle body which should be made whole and for sure be put on a recall to correct before someone is hurt. being it happens when at an idle if could cause a collision with a vehicle in front of you, but worse than that could be a child or person walking infront of the vehicle and suddenly being hit by the lurching car. *tr
At random times when the car is idling or at low speeds with no contact with the gas pedal, the engine surges. this occurs in forward or reverse, with or without the brake being applied. at times, the surging is severe and requires a lot of pressure on the brake to hold the car in place. last year, it seemed to occur more often with the ac on. the compressor died, so we had it replaced, but that did not fix the issue. we have not crashed into anything but have come very close. it is troubling since it occurs at low speeds, meaning we're in close proximity to cars, people, and buildings when the engine surges. *tr
Our 2005 ford freestyle has a surging problem. after reading online this appears to be very common. very dangerous! seems to be related to the throttle body. ford recommends replacing the tb. *tr
Car surges then stalls then goes into limp mode. happens once a month or more. if i turn the car off and restart it seems to clear and work fine. *tr
After starting car and putting it in gear forward or reverse car will surge. contacted ford dealership. was told no recall. mileage 105,000 started at 102,000. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that when starting the vehicle with the brakes depressed, the vehicle would lunge when in drive or in reverse. the vehicle was not inspected by a dealer nor repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. the failure mileage was approximately 50,000. updated 07/20/11*lj the dealer stated the problem was fuel related and the vehicle had to be reprogrammed. the consumer stated the vehicle seems to perform much better. updated 09/01/11
Vehicle has stalled at least 10 times since new, dealer inspected and found no fault codes. latest incident occurred 11/28/10. *tr
2005 ford freestyle. surging engine. shuts off while driving on highway multiple times. goes into engine safe mode. ford knows about this throttle body issue and refuses to recall it. this is a very dangerous problem. they are waiting on many deaths and lawsuits. *tr
Accelerating on it's own and lunge's forward with foot on brake. vehicle tries to lunge, stalls dash displays "fail safe mode". this occurs mostly when going in reverse. this has been happening off and on for over the past 2 years and has gotten worse in the past months. *tr
Have been having ongoing problem with car lunging, sudden acceleration especially when stopped. today it started and a warning light came on but went away when i turned the car off. later it started surging very badly again and i put fuel cleaner in the tank when i filled it up. a few hours later i was stopped at a stop sign and it surged and moved forward a few feet and died in the road. i will be contacting a ford dealer in the morning but when i got online to research the problem i found several complaints about similar problems that was being related to the throttle body(cleaned, replaced). *tr
Throttle body failure vehicle began lurching forward while in drive with brake applied this was on numerous occasions especially at drive through food establishments. i replaced the throttle body for $653.00 at my local mechanic. *tr
This car has an apparently well-known issue with the throttle body failing, causing: a) sudden uncontrolled acceleration from a stop, and b) sudden loss of power when traveling down the road at highway speeds. my wife experienced both problems yesterday. first, with my wife's foot on the brake, the freestyle lunged forward and almost rear-ended another car that had children loading into it, while in school carpool line. then, while making her way immediately to the ford dealership -- with my two children -- this uncontrolled lunging from a dead stop continued at intersections; and while traveling at speed, in traffic, the car would suddenly lose all power. the sudden lunge makes it likely you'll hit a pedestrian or rear-end the car in front of you; the sudden loss of power makes it likely you'll be the recipient of a rear-end collision. the repair is costing us $730. it's the throttle body, of course. and i've asked the dealership to give me back the old part, so yes, i should have that available when i get the car back. *** important *** this is a well-known issue to both ford and the odi of the nhtsa. there are hundreds of matching, publicly filed complaints documenting this chilling safety issue in this very same odi database to which i am submitting this mirror complaint. when should we expect to see some action from the odi/nhtsa and/or ford on this???????? i want my money back but i also want ford to fix this, not just on my car, but on all the other family's' cars that have this **well-known** safety defect!!!!!!!!! *tr
When at a dead stop or accelerating slowly (as in pulling into or out of a parking space), the engine will suddenly surge, requiring hard braking. this has almost caused accidents at multiple times. this has been a problem this entire summer. the 9/2/10 date was when it was particularly bad and persistent. ominously, the typical setting describes the situation when in the line of cars when picking up our daughters at school. *tr
I own a 2005 ford freestyle. we have been experiencing a problem with our car going intofail safe mode. this has happen backing up after first starting out, but has also occurred coming to a stop at intersections. the vehicle lunges forward or backward and then displays the fail safe. in fail safe, the vehicle will not accelerate. the vehicle must be turned off and restarted to correct the condition. the "lunging" and/or lack of acceleration when needed in safe mode are dangerous situations. i have not yet sought repairs. this issue has occurred quite often lately. i will be forced to seek professional assistance as it becomes progressively worse. i purchased the vehicle new in march 2006. the mileage is now 54,280. this condition first began within the past 6 months. *tr
2005 ford freestyle limited awd, approx 80,000 miles. with foot on brake, car surges or lunges when not pressing on the accelerator. this is a dangerous condition that needs a recall fix put in place. noticed that the rpm gauge jumps up about 200 to 300 rpm, enough to overcome the brakes. this happens in forward or reverse. this is dangerous to pedestrians and when entering intersections. this happens intermittently, and has occurred weekly over the last 3 summer months for us. the consequences of failure are that the vehicle is not under driver control for about 4 seconds, surging the vehicle forward or reverse. to correct the failure, i have replaced the air filter (no effect) and inspected the maf (clean), done some internet research, and will be contacting the ford dealer. the best 3rd party description i have seen is that the electronic throttle fails when vehicle is placed in gear with the a/c on. in failure mode, the throttle has been seen to open at 16 to 18% with no foot on the accelerator. others say ford has a newly designed throttle part that is hard to get and costs $800. some say a computer firmware update is also needed with the new part to correct this dangerous condition. *tr
2005 ford freestyle lunged backward when put in gear. even with the brake applied the car moved a few feet. this has occurred on three separate occasions. fortunately, there was no person or object in my path. the car was taken to the ford dealership and the throttle body was replaced. the car has 60,700 miles on the odometer. *tr
Issues occurs about 6 times in last two weeks. car stalls while driving. car have to pull car over to side of road and turn off. restarts on second try. took to ford dealership and the said the throttle body needs to be replaced. $855. car is 5 years old and has 72k miles. *tr
I have a 2005 ford freestyle with 3.0 liter engine that has an electronic throttle body. the car has surged forward several times while sitting at stop signs or red lights almost hitting other cars in front of me. it has also stalled out pulling through intersections. it never showed a check engine light. we had ford change the plugs and an oxygen sensor. the very next day it started again. took it back to ford who then said the throttle body was bad and they were on severe back order are not sure when a replacement will be available. *tr
Vehicle will suddenly surge and accelerate from idle while at stoplights, backing out of parking spaces, etc. i was backing into a parking space and it surged backwards and almost caused a collision with a parked vehicle. *tr
2005 ford freestyle throttle body problem causes car to surge while driving. *tr
2005 ford freestyle surges in drive and reverse, sometimes the brake won't even hold it. the car then stalls and the check engine light comes on. *tr
2005 ford freestyle has problems with throttle body - which appears to be a very common problem. why no recall from ford? *tr
Car surged after starting in putting into reverse. put foot on brake to stop. thank goodness no one behind me. car message center indicated "fail safe mode". cut car off, restarted took to dealer where codes indicated i needed to replace the throttle body control at a cost of over $800. dealer said this was one of many that had failed and all had caused a sudden surge without warning as my car also lunged into reverse with no warning. web site also indicated many problems with this same potential safety problem on 3.0 v6 units made in 2005. dealer said it usually happens just after the warranty goes out and mine lasted much longer, but i feel it is unsafe to drive unless fixed. *tr
2005 ford freestyle while stopped a traffic light suddenly accelerated without anything touching the gas pedal. i had to apply a lot of pressure to the brake to prevent the vehicle from entering the intersection. the vehicle then died and when restarted the check engine light and wrench symbol were lit up. i took the vehicle to the dealer who said it was due to a failed throttle body. it has been 6 days and the vehicle has not been repaired due to no parts available and from what i am seeing on the internet this is a common problem and i think it could cause serious accidents if the problem is not resolved. *tr
Throttle body fails and car will jump or it will bog down. tends to happen when backing up. car will surge on hwy. *tr
I have had this problem from about 2 months after obtaining the vehicle. and i currently have 49500 miles approx. the vehicle will lunge going forward or backwards, stall at times, clunking noises. have taken vehicle in many times, and was at one time nothing wrong. then ford dealer replaced some part in engine. while the vehicle was running and a/c was on in park, placed in reverse vehicle lunged again then the fail safe notification along with the wrench came on. took vehicle to dealer as i was told to bring it back when it was happening again. they told me today that it was the throttle body and map sensors that need to be repaired as they mechanically failed i have an extended warranty and it is not a covered item which for both items will cost almost $1500 which should have been covered under the comprehensive coverage of any extended warranty as it is part of the engine and working comprehensive parts. i know of at least 100 people in my area that have had the same problem with the throttle body, yet ford will not do a recall on this as it is considered a fire/safety hazard as the map sensors are on the manifold which controls the fuel. if you review the internet you will find many people with the 2005 ford freestyle are having the same problem with these items and should be a national recall on it. *tr
Car lurches when put into gear. *tr
2005 ford freestyle. in the last month or so the car has begun to accelerate on it's own at low idle and this has proven to be very dangerous and we have almost hit buildings and people in parking lots because the accelerator will surge on it's own. it happens in reverse as well as forward gears. you have to apply the brake very hard to stop the surge and the car sometimes stalls out with a critical engine failure message. we took the car in to the dealer and the problem is a faulty throttle body. this is a serious hazard and the vehicles should be recalled to fix this. it's happening to thousands of people who own these cars. *tr
I was parked with the car in park. i went to put the car in the garage. i had to turn it around first. i put car in drive and drove forward a little. stopped put in reverse, drove backwards a little then put back in drive and just as i was stopping car lurched forward, hitting my deep freezer. the car has acted like it wanted to go forward before when i put on the brakes lightly. this has happened about 4 times but, today was the worst. *tr
I was backing up when the vehicle started to lurch and did not want to stop. i slammed on the breaks and saw that the cel and the wrench light was illuminated and the dash displayed fail safe mode. continued to back up carefully and then when driving forward the car died. turned key off waiting a few seconds started the car up again and went directly to an auto parts store so that i could read the stored code. nothing showed up so i started the vehicle up put into reverse and the same thing happened again so i grabbed the code reader and it displayed p061b and p2106. after doing some investigation it looks as if the throttle body is needing to be replaced, and from all of the reading i have done i am not the only person having this issue. the issue is also compounded by the fact that this part is on a national back order from ford. with all of that info, i find it hard to believe there has not been a recall to fix this widespread issue. *tr
Our 2005 fordfreestyle has a known surging problem. everytime it would surge we would take it to the shop to be told there was nothing wrong. finally the car lunged 2 ft forward and shut down while sitting at a light. we hit the fuel reset button to get it working then went to the dealership; paid around $3000 to replace the fuel reset button and sensors to only have it start back up a week later. went back to the dealership to pay another $1000. now a month later the car is surging again. this time while driving down the road, thankfully a back road, the car just shut itself off and non of the systems worked. the brakes barely worked. we had to let the car coast to a stop. it is currently a very large and expensive lawn ornament. *tr
The vehicle periodically lurches forward or backward unexpectedly. this happens most often when shifting from park to reverse, from park to drive, reverse to drive or drive to reverse. when this unexpected acceleration occurs the car lunges forward without warning. this issue occurs on almost a daily basis. *tr
