Tl* the contact owns a 2004 ford freestar. while driving approximately 20 mph, the vehicle shook and stalled. the contact pulled over to the side of the road, turned the vehicle off, and waited a couple of minutes. once restarted, the vehicle ran for approximately three minutes before the failure recurred. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 118,000.

Was driving and my tach meter was going all over 3 4 lost all power while driving down the rd. also trac control is always off goes on and off

My 2004 freestar overheats after 70 mph. replaced thermostat and fans. does this with ac turned off. i turn to heat on to cool it done. i drove 2100 miles with windows down. this happens on the highway and going up long steep grade.

The indiana alpr tracking system causes electrical malfunctions including the abs brake system and various other unknown malfunctions. the abs module has failed on the subject vehicle and the alpr attacks continue. these alpr attacks are initiated by electrical apparatus on top of telephne poles and on police cars. these attacks can be heard by sudden unexpected loud thumping on my dashboard which could cause an accident in addition to the abs brake system failure. these attacks occur both in motion and when stationary. the thumping is expecially surprising in traffic and could easily cause an accident. plus, i do not have abs protection on slick roads

Everytime i stop at either a stoplight or stop sign it stalls out. the battery light comes on and then goes back off. i am able to restart it back up and continue it on. i have had the electrical computer fixed and had a full tune up done and it still stalls out.

My van has a problem with water, that is when it rains the vehicle starts having problems with several components. (ie engine misfire, transmission fails to shift properly, door looks refuse to operate properly, among other weird things) this happens every time it rains. the problem as i have being able to trace it, is that the water that comes off the front windshield and into the plastic that covers the cowl area ( where the wipers are) drips on to the main electric wire harness connection that comes from the inside of the car and connects to the engine bay wire harness. as the wire harness connector gets wet, the vehicle starts acting up. i took the van to my mechanic but he was unable to find a problem, it was dry. i took the vehicle to a ford dealer and, to my surprise, they knew about the problem but told me i had to pay the repair because its covered on a technical service bulletin (tsb 06-14-10) but its not a recall. how can this not be a recall when the van is going along well and as soon as it starts raining, i start having drive ability issues, transmissions starts acting up, engine starts acting up, some times stalls, in general i have a vehicle that appears to be "allergic to water." this issue happens any time it stars raining heavily whether on the highway or city street or my driveway for that matter, if its raining i have to take my wife's car because if not i know will have to be dealing with an uncooperative vehicle. ps. i put a date on the "when did this happen" field but this is an ongoing issue.

Engine surges in reverse and drive violently almost hitting vehicle in front of me at stop light no engine light or vehicle codes found

Transmission won't go into reverse and sometimes not in any gear. engine stops running on highway with no warning. nearly had an accident, had to be towed.

The third row seating latch has rusted out on the driver side. the vehicle i believe has issues that other 2004 ford freestar vehicles have the same issues and were recalled. i have contacted ford, and they refuse to help. i have 4 children and i fear to take them anywhere in this vehicle. please help. the vehicle jerks and stutters when in drive whether i'm moving or at a stop light as long as i am in any gear. it only has 85,000 miles and i've purchased it in february.

02 06 2016 the first problem with subfram breaking , i was at savealot 123 st clair avenue 44108, started my engine and shifter gears the engine started i shifted gears and it lots power and restarted, the vehicle jumped and a loud grinding park ford 400 west avenue tallmage ohio 44278 i purchased two bolts w711082-s439 purchased 2 bolts one broke and i spoke to the manager/ owner and i was told to return the bolt and the would provide me a new one. at the time they had a kit that was $65.00 the kit had the bolt steel washer, rubber 2 bushing and a anchor ( what the bolt screws into. 2nd time i was in east cleveland same thing happen with a chuck- hole, i repaired the van again, third time east 123 superior by day car van lost power and loud grinding, 3 time same bolt snapped it was repaired again, rallys e105 st clair avenue chuck holes both the right front and rear subframe bolts snapped in the middle of st' clair officer young and officer king parked behind me while i fixed the vehicle so i could get it home east 105 and elk avenue, rear spare subfram installed, and the front was chained locked and secured with cable just incase the locked chains failed, i called ford the said to slowly drive it out to them, towing, my insurance company was called and they ensured towing was added but i'd have to pay up front and get paid back, it the end of the month and i'm a disabled usaf veteran on a fixed income so this was not going to work. i was blessed to get the van out to ford under it own power yes i prayed all the way tears in my eyes. ford want to charge 300 labor i purchased 296.83 parts, 95.38 parts because ford feared this parts would break, now come ford wanting to charge 4x @220. Tl* the contact owns a 2004 ford freestar. while driving 40 mph, the engine stalled without warning. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the gem module needed to be replaced. the dealer stated that the parts were not available. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the contact called the manufacturer and was informed that the vin was not included in a recall, and filed case number: cas-11839376. the failure mileage was 116,000.

Whenever it rains or is humid the van sputters, dies, struggles to speed up and shift. my family was nearly hit when our van died in the middle of an intersection during a rain storm.

Had the recall for the torque converter done and now my vehicle shakes, sputters. won't accelerate, the rpms jump up high, very loud noises coming from underneath vehicle. sometimes it will stall out. can't go past 25-30 mph if it even gets up to that! my vehicle ran perfect before taking it into the ford dealership and ever since i got it back we have had this problem. took it back to ford and they tried to say it was throttle cable so had that fixed and it still is doing the same things as it did after the torque converter was replaced. can't drive the vehicle because when i go to accelerate it doesn't go or get up to the correct mph. the whole vehicle shakes really bad and the noises it makes are very loud and sound like something is going to blow up. i think the torque converter they replaced it with is bad and they need to fix this problem and man up and quit trying to blame it on other things. they messed up and need to fix it.

This vehicle i received numerous recalls and had many problems with this vehicle. major electrical problems. when it would rain and get car wash the electrical system would malfunction and cause engine not to run properly and check engine light would come on. in april of 2016 engine was malfunctioning and caused me to get in accident. this vehicle has since been impounded and loan company santander trying to bill me for remainder of loan and now causing major credit issues. i would like this to be covered by ford/carmax for selling my family an unsafe vehicle which could have resulted in critical injury or worse.

The 2004 freestar is shorting out all the sensors are shorting out u took it to be put on machine and it cane back with 17 sensors malfunction going on and it's the only vechele i own and i've googled the problem and i see 100000 other people are having the same problem what should i do i might be driving down the road and the vraje sensor is going and i can't stop i'm not rich i cantvgo buy another van please help me

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 ford freestar. while driving approximately 70 mph and suddenly on an elevation, the vehicle shook, decelerated, and lost power without warning. the contact pulled into an independent mechanic's shop where the technician changed the fuel filter. the failure recurred a few days later. the check engine light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to another independent mechanic who did not diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. the vin was unknown. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 87,000.

My car has spent 10 days at ford to be serviced after having the safety recall service for the torque converter performed. the vehicle was behaving unpredictably, sometimes stalling out while idled, stalling out while in motion, sometimes idling with high or low rpms. the dealership took it back in to check the torque converter, they then said it wasn't the torque converter but the throttle body, they then cleaned that and said it's not the throttle body, it's the pcm. the pcm is taking on water from a flawed design of the above pcm where water is retained and eventually leaks on to the connector. this of course is not covered by ford, and can cost up to $1200 to replace. this issue creates a number of different symptoms making it hard to identify the origin of the problem. causing extended stays for maintenance. this should be rectified by ford and not it's customers as there's no way this flaw can be caused by user error, it's a design flaw that should not exist.

2nd time that this has happened. was driving when the van started bucking/sputtering/surging. it would die and then fire right back up just to do it once again. soaked pcm connector was to blame both times. this is obviously a design flaw by ford and needs to be taken care of. i'm glad i was not on the interstate or in the middle of an intersection.

I was driving the vehicle and it was raining outside and as i was driving all of a sudden my car just died in the middle of the freeway no warning ,no nothing just died i almost was rear ended, i took it to a mechanic who said the pcm is not sealed properly and got wet and fried out this is unbelievable that ford would see tons of these complaints like i have seen online same problems and put people lives and their children's lives in danger with this poor manufacturing. what can i do ??? thank you [xxx] vin unavailable information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr*jb

Started sputtering, jerking, and stalling pcm was wet causing all kinds of havic lost power going into a turn and almost went into a ditch ford needs to recall this ongoing problem and get it fixed before something major happens alot of people are complaining and ford knows it is there fault and they have a problem but refuses to take care of it.

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 ford freestar. while driving approximately 30 mph, the accelerator pedal was applied and there was no engine power. the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. in 2013, the vehicle was repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 12v006000 (power train), but the failure recurred recently because the remedy was insufficient. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 162,801.

Turns out there was a recall on the 2004 ford freestar in 2012 regarding the torque converter. here it is two years later and it goes out again. this should not happen. there needs to be another recall on the torque converter and it needs to be fixed properly this time before there is a death from the incident. i had two kids under the age of 3 with me at the time and sitting in the pouring rain, in chilly weather, waiting for a ride home was not fun. fix it ford!!! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 ford freestar. the contact stated that while driving at 70 mph, the engine stalled. the failure occurred several times. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

I just purchased a 2004 ford freestar from a private seller and i was getting the vehicle ready for inspection and subsequently tag by replacing front and rear brakes, tie end rod and tires. on highway 495 heading back to mechanic shop, the engine cutting off without warning and vehicle stalled and engine stopped running on lane next to fastest lane and many vehicles behind me kept blowing horns and missed hitting me at last minute as this happened suddenly on busiest highway. end of report. *tr

Car history: the transaxle light has gone before when we travel through vt mountains, but turning off the engine and letting it sit, and restarting it, the light would go off. upon getting home safety, our mechanics didn't find anything to repair and so left it be, and would only sometimes see it when we traveled through the vt mountains, a few times a year. all recall repairs were up to date. there were no other symptoms. incident: as we nearing the top of a mountain, the transaxle light came on. unlike the other times, the transmission suddenly failed to be in the correct gear, so unlike the other times, we were very concerned. we pulled over immediately, and as we reached the shoulder smoke began pouring out of the vents. we quickly evacuated our kids, and as we were getting them out we noticed that there was already fire coming from under the hood, near the windshield, on the passenger side. we are so glad our kids were awake, and able to unlatch their own child carseats, and able to get out quickly. the fire spread to the entire van, consuming everything, at a great expense to us. (and others; our accident blocked a significant amount of traffic for about 3 hours.) *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 ford freestar. the contact stated while driving 70 mph, the check engine and trans axle lights illuminated on the instrument panel. immediately after, the vehicle stalled and was not able to be restarted. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was unknown.

After a rain van stalled in the middle of heavy traffic and would not restart.after several hours van would not start.i had van towed to a repair shop, pcm was replaced.@present headlights not working properly, air conditioning, horn, seat belt chimes not working at all.local dealership unable to repair.van continues to run rough. *tr

first time;while driving around a curve going approximately 40 miles per hour, the engine shut off, and lost power, and steering. engine light came on 2nd time; engine bucked at about 40 miles to 50 miles per hour, then the engine shut off, and lost power and steering. engine light came on 3rd time; same as the second time, engine light came on. went to a mechanic who stated that ran the engine on computer, and the code:po741 came up, tcc clutch performance. was told to go to ford for this because of current recall. went online to ford, and our vin came up for torque converter replacement. awaiting appointment on tuesday, june 3rd. at ford dealer. *tr

In good weather without warning the engine stalled in traffic. restarted, but the engine ran extremely rough. also the transmission would not go into reverse. managed to get to a independent service shop. there the technician found water in the pcm. dried out pcm and car ran fine. then the transmission light came on. now they found water in the transmission connector. two weeks later the car would often not start, and when it did the transmission would not shift out of first gear. on our third visit they replaced the throttle position sensor (tps). one week later same symptoms, this time tps and mass airflow sensors have failed. the problems are all related to the wet pcm! recall this car, now!!!!! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 ford freestar. the contact was driving 40 mph when the vehicle suddenly stalled. the vehicle was restarted and performed normally. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for inspection. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

Driving south on i 75,returning from a week's vacation, in medium saturday traffic the car started to act up. lights, warning lights, gauges, even the temperature and compass started flashing and going on and off. there was an exit a mile ahead when the engine died, right in front of a semi. i had to swerve to the side of the road to narrowly avoid an accident. the car would not start after that. i had to arrange a tow and was left stranded for five days. the ford dealer up north could not get the part for three weeks. now it's at a ford dealer here, by detroit, for over a week. they said it will cost over one thousand dollars to replace the pcm. looking on line i see all the complaints and repairs reported about this car, and you are doing nothing?? after seeing the pcm and the repairs to fix the problem you have to wonder why the brain of the car is in a spot where it can get wet, and why there are holes in the top to let water in? how many problems, accidents,or deaths do there have to be to start a recall???? *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 ford freestar. the contact stated that while driving 10 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 100,500.

In november of 2013, our 2004 ford freestar quit working. yes, we had the torque converter recalled and put on back when they had that recall. november was the first time we had this happen to our car. it was raining, and our car would not go into gear, it quit working. what made this bad is that it was on the freeway! my husband put it into neutral, but we still did not have steering capabilities and managed to get us over to the shoulder. we had to be towed to a dealership. the dealership then stated that many people were having the same issue with the electronics getting wet, so he dried it, then let it set for a couple days and caulked it. we thought that would end those problems. not. (note: this had cost us 450.00) then less than 2 months, the same exact thing happens, only this time we are stuck in a shopping center and could not get our car into gear again. we took it back to the dealership to which they replied that we needed a new electric module. how much? $1500.00!!! in less than 2 months, we spent almost 2,000.00! this was done in february. here it is now april and guess what? the same exact problem is taking place again!! we are not alone, there are many people facing the same problems we have had, look around at the boards online and you will see that everyone has the same issues!! some investigations need to be opened or reopened as this is not resolved and lawsuits will be filed if someone gets hurt. *js

Van started running poorly suddenly, then would not run at all. after shutting down and allowing cool down time, restarted van and it would not go into gear. ran well in park or neutral, but shifting into any gear would "clunk" and the engine would immediately quit. after 5 days of troubleshooting, traced trouble to engine pcm after reading in on-line forums about it. found pcm wet and pins on pcm and contacts on wire harness corroded and green due to water leaking past cowl-to-body seal. the pcm connector is not sealed, so if water does drip on it, it is dripping directly onto back side of the contacts and ford did release a tsb about this issue but not a recall. tsb says to remove some plugs from body (my van is severely rusted in one of those 2 spots), seal around clips that hold plastic cowl to body with silicone sealant and add additional weather stripping on the outer edges of cowl to try to prevent water. i had to replace my pcm. had my wife been on the highway when this happened, there would have most certainly been an accident or injury. *tr

Intermittently, when i am idling in drive (like at a light) with my foot on the brake, the van will begin to surge and lurch forward, sometimes violently. only pressing hard on the brake will keep it from moving forward and causing a crash. sometimes happens in reverse also. the tachometer will surge up to higher rpms and back down as it lurches. sometimes, if it is violent enough, the battery light will flash off and on as if the vehicle is about to stall. seems very dangerous as it could cause an accident with a nearby vehicle. *jb

Was driving about 35 miles and hour when i turned and went up a slight incline...engine sputtered a bit then i turned into parking lot, heard a loud noise like engine revving up and then it just died. lost all control of vehicle and luckily coasted to a spot where no cars were. i let it sit for a moment, started back up and it was revving up again and rpm's were going up drastically. tried to put in reverse and it would not go, shifted to park again and it revved back up. turned off let sit again...then started, was able to reverse but with loud noise and revving of rpm's. drive a small amount and it died again and would not start back. had pcm replaced about one year ago. not sure of problem. still waiting to get it towed. *tr

The transmission is slipping in and out and very sluggish and no power, backfiring and smells very strong of gas fumes. has been going on for a few weeks. i was driving on the highway and it slipped out of drive and lost power. i had to slow myself down at a pace to turn the van into a safe area off the highway i was traveling at the speed of 60..very scary ...the van would not move. i had the van towed by a friend at the cost of $65.00 (he saved me a lot of money ) which was not offered back to me from the dealership.... i didn't know abt the recall or the pcm problem until i was looking for info on ytube..i called my dealer where i had bought the van( and it is paid for) when i talked with an advisor he said for me to have it towed to the dealership and they would look at it. i refused to pay for the tow (they did do that at least) he called me and said that the torque converter was under a recall and they would replace that part...3 days later i went to pick the van up and it still wasn't driving right. still loosing power and gas smell and it felt as if the transmission was slipping still. it was a saturday and the lady helping me knew nothing couldn't even find my paperwork and had to call the advisor. she said to call him back on monday so needless to say i tried to drive the van and it just wasn't drivable so i parked it.. was afraid it might do more damage if i didn't. on monday i called and spoke to the advisor and he informed me that they only did the recall part as i had requested to be done. he also said the tech told him that the van needed a lot of work. i in return ask why they didn't check out all of the problems and his answer was we did the recall and that's all we can do unless i wanted to pay $100.00 for a diagnostic .so needless to say my van sits until i can pay or ford does something to make this right. the ball is n your ...

While driving the motor stalls, twice is cut off, the other 2 times is sputtered and jerked but finally started back to normal. almost got hit twice because of motor stalling. our charity (www.donatecca.org) bought the car in feb 2014, since then there has been a loud gurgling sound coming from the dash board, never stops. car does not overheat at all. *tr

While driving my son to school, vehicle stalled at 45 mph and engine died. got vehicle started again, died again, managed to get vehicle back home. this issue has been happening intermittently ever since with no warning engine will die while driving vehicle. i have been advised by a mechanic that this is due to the pcm getting wet repeatedly. after researching issue on-line, this appears to be a design issue that ford should address immediately before it results in a fatality. *tr

Multiple times since april 2013 this vehicle has started stalling at stop signs and traffic lights, when shifting gears the vehicle's gas would have to be slightly accelerated first and then it would move in its gear with force. starting in july all the vehicle's power would cut off at traffic lights and stop signs and would have to be restarted. after receiving notice of the 2013 recall for the torque converter and taking it to a ford dealership, it was then told by a dealership service rep that the transmission would need to be replaced due to excessive fluids from the torque converter affecting the transmission and damaging it. this has taken place sept. 2013. *tr

I was sitting at my son's bus stop this morning waiting on the bus. i had the van running cause it was cold...but i had it park. then all of a sudden...all the lights on the dash board came on...the engine shut off and then started back up. this happened about 6 months ago while i was driving. it was really strange. back in aug. of 2011..my torque converter went out...thought it was my transmission. no warning at all that anything was wrong except for it missing a little. engine light never came on. got torque converter replaced due to a recall in jan. of 2012; about 6 months later...it starting missing alittle again. without the engine light coming on...nobody can tell me what the issue is. any ideas what this may be??? *tr

This is the fourth time power train control module has gone out during rain event. this time was on a highway traveling at 45mph with passengers. the result was intermittent engine shutdown, loss of steering, and forward motion. this module has been replaced 3 other times. two times in 2011, and two months ago in 2013. *tr

Cpsc#i1320440. 2004 ford freestar. consumer stated after driving the car in the rain, a few days afterwards the vehicle spurts and shakes violently. *ln the consumer also stated the check engine light would come on and flash. the vehicle also jumped when accelerating and vibrated while at a stop. the consumer stated as soon as she drove the vehicle in the rain, the problem started again. the vehicle then stalled while in park.

I have had this van 1 month and paid $8000,its my first car payment,86,000 miles and i am losing power and the water light is coming on the van is jerking when driving this,,i want to learn about the lemon law in michigan. *tr

Basically, when it's wet outside the car dies after starting. there will be a loud screeching sound coming from under the hood and then it will just stutter and stall out. it will start right back up but then it will die again. this will even happen while driving down the road. it seems to only happen when it's wet outside so far but we have no idea what it causing it and the dealer is no help at all. *tr

2004 ford freestar ses i changed the rear brakes on 1/20/2013 noticed the left rear wheel was rusting out. today 2/24/2013 went to install a car sear & noticed the bench seat in the back was rocking slightly. the anchor point on the left rear is rusted out and moving. upon inspection i noticed that i can see down to the ground where the anchor point has rusted out. i have had to replace numerous parts on this van over the last two years. to date i have replaced: 3 ignition coils, (this is the main problem whenever heavy rain or snow has happened and i start to throw misfire codes), 3 camshaft position sensors, 2 driver side window controls & motors, (the window doesn't want to work half the time so we leave it cracked open with the rain guards), an egr valve, and a clockspring. i have never had so many problems with this vehicle in such a short amount of time. *tr

. in addition to causing an engine to stall, which may or may not then restart, transmission shift poorly, the vehicle has had erratic power, almost every time there is an inability to shift the vehicle into either forward or reverse. on start up no matter the temp of vehicle the idle rpm is higher than normal in park ! it has been service many many times.. now our transmission fluid looks like pepto bismol !! *tr

Our 2004 ford freestar stalled, and then surged after accelerating from a stop. the next day the check engine light came on. we took it to a local ford dealer, capital city ford in indianapolis, who in indicated the code was for a fuel pump problem. we paid over $800 to have the fuel pump replaced on december 27th. in late february the van began to stall and surge again. we suspected the same problem. it continued to do this off and on for the next two weeks and on march 8th the check engine light came on again. we took it back to the same ford dealer and they said the initial code was for the same error, but when another mechanic/technician checked the code it came up with a different problem. we were advised that the there was "moisture" getting into the pcm causing the problem and not only was it causing the engine to stall, but was giving wrong error codes. the replacement of the pcm was estimated to be a +$1,000 cost. we were advised that it "seemed to be" a design flaw in the location of the pcm in that it is in line with the waterflow from the windshield. after much research on the internet on this issue, it appears it is a long-standing issue with many owners of this vehicle and even with replacement of the pcm the problem will happen again due to the design flaw. the safety risk related to engine stalls due to the failure of the pcm is unacceptable. the failure of the dealership to identify this well-known problem and charge us for a repair (fuel pump) that was unnecessary is unconscionable. *tr

The pcm internal computer is crashed and cause the veh to run poorly and not start, drained batter, etc - this is an issue with a lot of 2004 freestars as i read online and was told to submit the info so that maybe they will do a recall and get this fixed. thank god it did not happen while driving. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 ford freestar. the contact stated that the check engine warning lamp illuminated. the contact mentioned that the vehicle failed to start. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that water was seeping into the connector and causing a shortage however, the technician was unable to provide a remedy. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 150,000. *tr
