Problems with 2017 Ford Focus POWER TRAIN

On average, the 2017 Ford Focus starts to “feel” problems with the POWER TRAIN and its various aspects after 22 721 miles.

Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2017 Ford Focus

Our car was looked at july 2019 and the recall was not fixed but they knew about it from your records. and we have been having trouble on accelerating spitting and sputtering and today me and my family were out shopping and we were driving out of the parking lot and the car just would not go the gas was not working we couldnt move and we turned it off and starting driving again and the same thing happened and the check engine light was on and it wasnt on before this. i am very mad that this recall was over looked because my familys life couldnt had been taken if this happened on a freeway or interstate. so we had to pay for a tow to the dealership johnson city ford, tn 37602 and they were closed today but tomorrow i am going to confront them about this and im reaching out to u guys to insure this will get fixed of no charge and fixed right! thank u.

Car almost stalls from stop to go in first gear. and the engine rattles when coming to a stop.

Automatic transmission is stuttering upon acceleration, sometimes idles below 1000 rpm when stationary, and shifts rough when driving. pretty much the same transmission problems that the older models with the same transmission had.

Power loss to drive wheels starting from stops makes vehicle feel unsafe in traffic. dual clutch powershift transmission shudders, slips, and sometimes clunks in first & into second gears under nominal acceleration. vehicle has only 22,000 miles. ford focus dual clutch powershift transmission problems remain. and this is the second transmission replaced by ford at only 17,000 miles.

This started about two week after we bought the car. the car had 18890 miles on it when we bought it on 10/23/2019.the car will slip in to neutral between shifts and will not go over 45miles an hour. sometimes it will not go over 25 miles an hour.

Bought this vehicle on october 28 2019 and the next day the car stall and was almost hit from behind while carring a patient i was driving to the doctors office on october 29 2019 took car back they said they had fix the issue then the next date it rain it all got wet on the passager side took to dealship they had the care since nov 4 pick up on nov 22 and car still has same issue and it was stationary when getting wet and in motion when it stall and it is a risk because i carry patients in my car every day it my job and dealship has yet to give me paper invoice on repairs done to car and i call them and speak with them they say im going to call you back and they dont its sames ford dealship in kingsville texas and i do have video on the day it was getting wet in side and you can see how the water was dripping

The vehicle is exhibiting the same issues as have been documented on 2012-2016 ford focus models equipped with the infamous dps6 transmission (consult detroit free press coverage on the dps6 situation, example https://www.freep.com/story/money/cars/ford/2019/09/13/ford-focus-fiesta-transmission-class-action-stalled-dps-6/2312926001/). during gentle acceleration from stop, the vehicle frequently will shudder violently during acceleration, as if the transmission is hunting between gears. this does not occur at highway speeds, or during acceleration when the car is already in motion and at normal driving speeds (35-40mph). at time of purchase, i was told the 2017 models did not have the dps6 unit. after a previous incident, it was taken to john bleakley ford in lithia springs ga (now known as lithia springs ford, and the dealer from which the vehicle was purchased), where the service advisor noted that the transmission was indeed exhibiting similar behavior, but for a different reason. the repair lasted a few months before starting again a few months ago. i believe i have a vehicle that has a dps6, or that this redesigned transmission has a near-identical design fault to the dps6, and thus the vehicle should be recalled or deemed defective.

Car vibrates when accelerating in lower gears-going from standstill to 1st gear experiences a severe vibration.

While i'm driving on freeway or regular highway the car just dies out for no apparent reason almost got into a bad wreck because of it had to coast it off the road out of way from traffic so i wouldn't get hit it's done this more then once took it in and they reset the computer it was ok for 2 days then did the exact same thing just died while i was driving on the highway the whole car turned off so had to put in park and then start took a few times to start then finally started and left but this keeps happening definitely not good for vehicle that only has 44 thousand miles on it .

The transmission shudders and vibrates while changing gears, also hesitates while changing gears, makes chattering noises while changing gears and is slow to accelerate at times. ford has already changed the clutch and it seemed to solve the problem, however it is now doing the same thing.

Transmission gears are rough, slipping, jerks a little and transmission overheats and can't drive. looses power when driving. there is a recall for this vehicle but i was told only the cars that in a manufactured area or a group are in recall. makes no sense because we have the exact same car that is being recalled and we weren't in that group or manufactured area so our vehicle won't be repaired. something is seriously wrong with this whole issue. it's the same problem as the ones in group that are being recalled. why isn't our car being recalled, it's a safety issue also... this seams very wrong. our car is only two years old and we don't have that kind of money to fix on our own...

Purchased 9/2018.care has been shaking likes its going to fall apart ever since then. . i have a manual transmission and car grunts when picking up speed like i have a clutch shift and makes this scratching noise when i shift from park to reverse. or reverse to drive. also when i barely tap the breaks its stop so suddenly the jilt forces me forward.. today 9/13/19 the transmission fault message came on. and went off. then when i start the car back up to check systems.. the message system says all systems normal and the light didnt come back on after driving it around, shift from reverse to drive, and shutting of and starting up car 3 different times.

I have felt on several occasions the car shake and seem to struggle to take off from a stop to go. seems to increasingly get worse

Car started having transmission problems, jerking and problems with shifting into a gear. it does this while driving and i drive for lyft and uber and it has scared customers . i'm scared for my safety and others. there is a recall on exact same car but ours was not in the 'manufacture group only certain cars. ford knows of these problems but they just don't care .. this car is only 2 years old .

2017 ford focus shudders and vibrates while in motion and while stationary. vehicle also has hesitation and slow response when accelerating. vehicle is current on all recalled services however the issue is still present.

Between 0& 20miles and 20 & 40 miles going forward or backwards my car jerks, stall, vibrates and make metal can scraping sound. my car is the the 2017 focus has a new design but the same dual clutch 'automatic' transmission system as previous year models. ... however, where the focus is manufactured does not excuse the fact that ford has known about the transmission problem for years and has continued to ignore the problem. this happens only when driving.

There was a recall 18s32 campaign fuel tank deformation issued late 2018. the pcm system was not adequately detecting a stuck open canister purge value. on august 24th, 2019 i took my vehicle to get the recall repair due to stalling without notice and dangerous in drivability concerns. on august 25th, the following day, i had the very same exact symptoms. i took it to pepboys to diagnose, and the same codes were populating for the recall. pepboys advised to take it back to a dealer. i then took it to another ford dealership on october 22nd for a second opinion, and they stated that the canister purge valve was sticking. on october 24th, the vehicle was returned back to me and within a couple of hours same symptoms. on nov 5th, 2019, i was advised the canister purge valve was replaced after the parts were on bo for 2-3 weeks. however, car started driving the very exact way followed by service engine light and transmission overheating warning. additionally, the car did not accelerate when attempting to make a left turn and a diesel had to swiftly hit on their breaks to prevent crashing into me. the vehicle was returned back on the 8th of november, however, dealership stated they were unable to duplicate concern. on november 13, the vehicle was picked up and on november 14th i had to take it back due to the same issues. on november 30, i was advised that they notice a clutch slipping, vehicle rev high when trying to reverse or accelerate. however, vehicle operating as design. this is not the case. after 6 attempts in trying to rectify this issue, it is not. my safety is a concern here as the vehicle is not operating as design and currently remains as is.

I bought a brand new 2017 ford focus and have had it in the shop 6 times for an error code of p0299 turbo/super charger underbooster going off. the engine is losing power when it starts acting up and to protect the car it shuts down the underbooster. i have almost been rearended several times and my very pregnant daugher in law and i were almost t-boned due to the problem as we wete making a left turn out of my neighborhood onto a busy street. when taking it into the shop lou fusz chesterfield has told me several times they were not able to find an issue with the car or duplicate the problem. because the check engine light would alarm and when you turn the car off the code resets itself. i have asked ford to work with me to replace the vehicle and they just said they could do nothing because i had 18 months due to the lemon law in missouri.

While accelerating at any pace, the vehicle will often shutter, shift very late, or fail to shift at all. when slowing down, during down-shift from the automatic dct, it makes sort of a clanking sound.

When in motion, traveling forward in drive. the car will behave as if it has shifted into neutral -- not responding to pressure on the accelerator and revving up to as many as 6000 rpm. the car will behave this way even in cruise-control mode. when at last the car begins responding to accelerator pressure, it lurches abruptly. in addition, when making a turn from a stop (e.g., a left-hand turn from a light that has just turned green), the car will not begin moving with any consistency according to acceleration; often, it revs either shortly after moving or without any movement.

My car was at a standstill and my car stuttered like the transmission was going to fall out, i talk with kevin at liberty ford in aurora ohio and he said didn't the salesman tell you about the transmission problems and i said no. my radio has stopped working twice, i didn't have this problem until liberty ford did my oil change back in may 2019, also my car is missing while driving. not happy with being sold a lemon. *tr consumer no longer has the vehicle.*jb

The transmission skips, lunges, and does not shift well. it has been in for transmission flash and automatic transmission clutch rebuild at 19,000 miles. was in for check and trans flash at 29,000 miles week of june 27th 2019. was in today, july 16 for check because it operated worse after it was looked at three weeks ago. the service manager says clutch has to be rebuilt/replaced again...it has about 30,000 miles on it. this is a safety problem as we cannot trust the vehicle to get out of the way or move properly when gas pedal is put down. ford knew about this problem for years and still sold defective vehicles

Upon coming to a stop (such as at a traffic light or stop sign,) the vehicle makes extremely loud "clunking" noises when shifting down in gear. the sound seems to come directly from the transmission area and is in sync with the changing of gears. upon acceleration from a stop, the transmission will make grinding sounds and stutter the entire car in a jerking-type motion. when this happens, the entire car feels as if there is a loss of power and makes it hard to accelerate properly in high-speed/high-traffic areas (such as freeway on-ramps or state highways.) i personally believe that this could be a dangerous thing because if i were to pass someone on a dotted line, or even pull out onto a roadway, the car may either stall or stutter so slowly that i wouldn't be able to get up to speed correctly, resulting in a possible collision. lastly, i would like to mention that on 3 separate occasions now, when i am trying to park the car in a parking space, the transmission would not switch it into reverse at all. my gear shifting stick was in reverse, as well as the gauge-cluster displaying i was in reverse, however, my car acted as if it was in neutral. i would have to place the car back into park or drive again, and then try again for the transmission to successfully switch into reverse. i did contact my local ford dealership, however they said they were many weeks out and i never could get ahold of anyone there to schedule a time to look at it. i will add on that my car only has 17,000 miles on it as of july 2019. from my research, i have seen many others post complaints or worries in regard to the 2017 ford focus and its transmission. i hope that nhtsa will look into this further and can find answers as to why many, many of these cars are having issues with stalling, stuttering, and grinding noises and motions coming from the transmission.

This 2017 ford focus is having the same transmission issues being described by other ford owners from earlier model years. car shutters and vibrates, often very heavily and makes light grinding noise when shifting. current workaround is to accelerate very slow or very fast which isn't always a safe option. please include the 2017 focus in your investigation. thank you.

The transmission shudders frequently. its a reoccurring issue every time i drive and the car only has 30k miles on it, the car did not come equipped with the select shift mode and it has been doing it since i got the car, it makes the whole front end of the car shake (not violently enough to make the car steer out of control). i took it to a ford dealership and they said they don't know what i'm talking about and cant reproduce the issue, but its a well known that the ford powershift transmission is terrible, basically the issue is not common enough to need replacing so i'm just stuck with a poor transmission.

A few months ago, my car started to shake (in a jerking, forward and back motion), and struggle to accelerate. it would make this noise, like gears grinding. i took it to the dealership to get it fixed under warranty, and they replaced the clutch. for about a week, it was fine. then it started to do the same thing again. it will jerk back and forth when i accelerate from a complete stop (at a stoplight for example). recently, i have been losing gas very quickly because it will go all the way past 4rpms just to get from 0-20mph. i'm not sure if the warranty is still on it, but it only has 12,000 miles on it. i have only made one very big trip with it, to kansas and back to virginia. it does this off and on every single time i drive it. i have to drive anywhere from 25 minutes to an hour for work, so this is really not convenient to have. multiple times i was worried it would break down as i struggled to keep it from overdoing itself while accelerating. a few times, i could smell something like exhaust in the vents. this has been happening over the course of 6 months and has only gotten worse, even after taking it to the dealership, and having them tell me it was "fixed."

Whenever going from one low gear up to another, if you are not driving it like you stole it it begins to shake and grind gears. this occurs when driving on any road and does happen if you are turning. after purchasing this car, initially it was not as bad. but the more it has been driven, the worse the problem has gotten. i know this is not only my car acting this way because i know a friend who had the same problem and they were the ones who told me to drive it like a stole it.

Occasionally the transmission mis-shifts or slips violently. occasionally it feels like the car is trying to accelerate without accelerator input. example 1: i was on the freeway and someone accidentally merged into my lane where i was. i braked as i got over to avoid an accident. i then tried to accelerate. the engine rpm went to around 8000. the car didn't accelerate, in fact it felt like it was continuing to slow. my foot wasn't on the brake, there was no reason for the transmission to be in a neutral state. the vehicle behind me had caught up to me and had to veer into the furthest left lane to avoid me. after releasing the gas and pressing it again the car felt like it fell into the correct gear and it accelerated. example 2: my wife and i were out and we stopped at a red light. i had my foot on the brake and eased up to avoid that lurch feeling as i came to a full stop. the car lunged like it was trying to drive itself. this was a very short time frame but it was still terrifying. i had my wife in the car, she said she has experienced that a few times. example 3: when accelerating from full stops the vehicle occasionally hesitates to go. the engine rpm will go up but the car will sit still or barely move and jerk about. luckily none have resulted in accidents but in all situations the only reason there wasn't one was because someone else reacted quickly enough. the vehicle that swerved to avoid, the driver behind me not going just because my brake lights were off and no one in front of me when the car lurched forward on its own.

When taking off from stand still, it acts as though the transmission is slipping causing a hesitation

Shifting from first to second the transmission shudders and sounds and feels like vibrations. had the clutch replaced at 34k. happenjng again. brought it to ford , they reprogrammed the transmission , 2 days later happening again.

Vehicle transmission stalls while driving, to include in intersections. my daughter drives this car, we have had it in for service which they said they fixed. within 2 days, it was doing the same problem. we are not at all pleased with ford for even selling us this vehicle knowing it has had transmission problems for several years!

When accelerating from a stop, the car often struggles to get up to speed. it will also shudder and shake while doing this. intermittently shifting into reverse will yield no results and i will have to place the car in park, and try again which sometimes fixes the issue. car will also lunge forward from a stop with very little accelerator press and other times will lag and have lack of acceleration despite "flooring it". while turning and accelerating from a stop, it feels as if the car can't decide what gear to be in and will provide far more power than is necessary.

6-speed dual clutch automatic transmission slips while accelerating from a stop, clunks and rattles while slowing down to a stop. has happened every day since i've had the car.

Purchased the vehicle new with only 21 miles on it, brand new automatic transmission within 8mnths i had to have the clutch replaced because it was shuddering and hesitating on acceleration. by november i was having the same issue again and the 3rd clutch was put in, now again just 5 mnths later the car is getting its 4th clutch . repeat issue and no resolution. other than let them keep putting clutches in until my warranty dies.

My 2017 focus developed a problem with the power shift dual clutch transmission slipping at low speeds. it would launch well initially, but then start to shudder and slip until 2nd gear was fully engaged. the problem was more pronounced when turning onto a road while accelerating to merge with traffic, and the shuddering was stronger at the end of a drive than at the beginning. gradually the symptoms became more severe, until i did not feel safe merging into traffic at normal speeds. at that point i took it in to the dealer. the dealer did a road test and inspection and concluded the clutch needed replacement. the part was on national backorder and took 8 weeks to arrive; in the meantime i had to continue driving my focus with its defect. the dealer replaced the clutch and half-shaft seals under warranty at no charge. the issue was resolved, and has not reoccurred.

Transmission shudders heavily when accelerating from 1st to 3rd gear. seems to only do this when the engine is warmed up.

At unpredictable times, accelerator pressure results only in engine revving. this occurs regardless of current speed, when turning at any speed or when moving forward. the transmission will not engage for several seconds. when it does finally engage, it will do so in a burst of acceleration. these conditions create problems in which routine traffic maneuvers become unsafe.

I was pulling into a parking spot at approximately 3-5 mph and the car surged forward jumping the curb and hitting a tree. prior to approaching the parking spot a speed bump was negotiated so the stated mph are accurate as the speed bump was 25 feet prior to the parking spot entry.

The vehicle shakes and loses power at take off. it does not happen every time. the car was taken to ford and we were told that it is a "normal feature". this car was purchased for our teenager and, 2 days after purchase, we are not comfortable with her driving it. she pulls into traffic and the car shakes and does not accelerate appropriately. very unsafe and needs addressed.

Car has 75,000 miles. bought brand new. i commute to work which is 120 mile round trip. my house is about 1 mile from the interstate. after about 20,000 miles i would notice some hesitation when the vehicle would shift from 1st gear to second gear. this would only be after my commute and going from the stop at the end of the exit. after my exits both from work and home the vehicle would only need to shift once from 1st to second gear until i would arrive to my destination. recently within the last 15,000 miles it's noticeably worse. now i have transmission fluid sitting in my driveway. i will be getting an oil change at the dealership soon and will say something about it.

On 3/21/19 while driving my vehicle, the front passenger door opened. the door just popped open, i was driving in an intersection of a busy street and about to make a turn when this occurred. it was terrifying and i barely missed an accident. luckily i was right by a gas station when this happened and i had the car towed to the dealership. i requested that the dealership examine all 4 doors as i was afraid this might recur. on 4/14/19 the same problem happened, only this time it was the left rear passenger seat. the door popped open while driving and would not shut. i took the car straight to the dealership the next morning. i am afraid to drive this car. i was told this could be a child safety lock issue, yet i do not use this feature, as i do not have small children. i have requested that all latches on all doors be replaced. this is a very dangerous situation. i also have had transmission issues (stalling) which dealer states is resolved, and an issue with the gas tank that i was told was a recall then not? what is it? is the gas tank a recall or not? id my car defective & safe to drive?

Transmission clutch slips, car stutters on accelerations, clunky sound. (google it) well known problem with these cars, ford is aware, but been to dealers twice, they won't fix, because ford won't pay! dangerous if car stutters & you need to go!

Beside the two safety recalls 18v-735 and 19v-515 there is another issue with the car which when it rains all the rain water penetrates the back door of the car and it stays there for a long period of time due to the poor design of ford motor company and its negligeance and fraud. i believe this issue might be a safety risk and it should be investigated. after the recalls and the poor repairs the car still unsafe to drive because the transmissions problem is irreparable which means this car will never be safe to drive and everyday i drive it to work whenever i stop in a hill at a traffic light or stop sign i hear noise coming from the transmission and if it happened that i stopped suddenly in the middle of the hill due to traffic the car losses its power and barely moves forward ( loss of power due to faulty transmission)this issue caused me an accident early this year when the car lost power up hill in my neighborhood . the conclusion is my car and all 2017 ford focus are not safe to drive . i believe that ford motor company and the dealer who sold me this garbage car deceived all of us and committed a big fraud . i think it is time for the government to open an investigation and force them by law to buy their garbage cars back . until this moment i still believe that there is no one above the law. thank you for reading my complaint .

Car stuttered when gear shifted from 1st to 2nd. car stood accelatating while driving, causing the transmission to overheat. transmission now is making a grinding noise.

Transmission problems that include hesitating, shuttering, and what feels to be clutch slipping with their "new" double clutch transmission. this happens periodically when starting from a stop and usually shutters the whole car through 1st and 2nd gear. sometimes it feels like the transmission is going to fall out of the car. along with the hesitation and violent shuttering i'm worried to drive my car that has less than 30,000 miles on it. i've heard of many other people experiencing the same problem and the dealership can't seem to figure out what's wrong and how to fix it.

Car had problems with driver seat not clothing in right and sometimes moves back while driving. seatbelts do not want to click right and have to push in multiple times before you can fasten belts. while trying to accelerate the transmission stalls and jerks forward and vehicle sometimes shakes while driving. does not want to pick up sorry either.

Shuddering while accelerating from first to second gear in automatic transmission. at first this only happened on occasion (approximately 6,600 miles) and i thought it was because i was running the a/c in the car. it progressively got worse to where it was occurring constantly. i took it into a ford dealer and they "reprogrammed" the tcm. that lasted about 3 weeks and it still continues to this day. this morning while driving to work on the freeway at 70 mph, the transmission acted like it was in neutral, i lost all acceleration and the rpm's went up to 7000. i verified that the car was in drive and that it wasn't knocked out of gear. i called ford service again and i am taking the car into service this afternoon. they stated that the tcm needs to be reprogrammed again. these are the same issues that the previous focus owners reported in 2016 cars and older. my car has less than 18,000 miles on it.

Anytime i try to make any sort of turn in this vehicle, trying to accelerate into the turn i essentially get stalled out even though the gas pedal is engaged and trying to power the vehicle to make the turn. it becomes a dangerous aspect especially when it starts to become busy on a main city street and the car won't accelerate like it's supposed to while trying to make the turn. my vehicle can start to make the turn and then start to stall out as i'm in the middle of the turn, and then it will sit there for a second until there are inbound cars coming and then it'll continue to make the turn after stalling for about 5 seconds. it's become a concern because it now comes down to waiting until the roadway is empty and full to make a safe turn. on top of that, if i'm going anywhere between 8 to 15 miles an hour, my car starts to stutter at low speeds. not sure exactly what the cases for that, but it has raised some eyebrows and some concerns to myself with that because you never know what's going to happen if it starts to stutter and stalls out completely or disables the vehicle. this is the second hatchback i've purchased through ford, and it's the first time i've ever had any sort of issues with the vehicle. i just don't want something to happen while i'm driving or trying to make any sort of turns from a main street to a side street install out in the middle of the roadway and possibly get hit from oncoming traffic. especially going through any sort of school zones when it's clearly marked to go 15 miles an hour or below. i would recommend looking into this issue, because it looks like it has happened very frequently with a few other 2017 focus's.

I have had this vehicle since october of 2017, and have already had to get the clutch replaced once. this is the select shift automatic transmission and even though ford has replaced the clutch once already, i am still having the same problems with what seems like the clutch slipping which is causing the vehicle to shudder/jerk when going from first to second (accelerating). it has started occurring more often than not and i have taken then vehicle back into to ford many times for them to just tell me there is nothing wrong with my vehicle, and the slipping is 'normal' for this transmission. i drive this car on a daily basis to and from work and what it is doing does not seem normal. you can also hear it clunk when decelerating when approaching intersections.

Transmission shutters and jerks when accelerating from a stop occasionally. it is the same issue that i had in the 2013 focus we owned before this one that was recalled and replaced 3 times by 100k miles. i believe this is the same issue all together and upon investigation have no doubt that this will become a recall issue as well. it is very disturbing trying to accelerate from a stop at an intersection or a parking lot and wonder if your car is going to actually accelerate, blow the transmission, or if you are just going to shutter and be part of an accident because of it. this issue needs to be addressed.
