Recently reported VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL problems on 2014 Ford Focus

Transmission "stutters" and car shakes when accelerating - especially from a stop. the last couple of weeks, the rpms accelerate when driving; however, the car feels like it is in neutral. when accelerating - especially from a stop - the car "hesitates" and doesn't accelerate immediately. these problems have happened continuously since i bought the car in september, 2015, and occur at varying speeds.

I have transmission problems since i bought my car in 2016. lose of power on freeways and acceleration problems all the time. the service engine light continues to turn on and off unexpectedly. ford continue to denying those problem, causing a lot of stress every time that i drive long distances

The vehicle a 2014 ford focus s model was moving at a high rate of speed going down the highway when it stalled out due to the wiring splices going bad causing the vehicle to stall out and stop without warning

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while driving 35 mph down an incline, the brake pedal was depressed and the vehicle shook and took a longer distance to stop. in addition, the accelerator pedal was depressed and the vehicle vibrated and accelerated in excess. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 44,002.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. the contact stated that while driving at 35 mph, the transmission failed. the contact stated that when the accelerator pedal was depressed, the vehicle jerked violently. the vehicle was taken to be repaired but the failure recurred multiple times. the details of the repairs were unknown. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 23,200. updated 03/09/16*lj *tr

I previously had a 2012 ford focus, which left me stranded in the middle of a bridge after a recall part broke. (ford in the letter sent on the recall stated they could not fix the part that broke until it broke). so i had to wait until that day happened. that was the second strike against them. i had already been in for diagnostic checks and reprogramming several times over the years i owned the car. then they had to replace the clutch and tcm; kept my car for 3-4 days. so after all that was fixed i traded and got a 2014 ford focus hatchback. all that stuff was supposed to be behind me and no glitches in this year. after 15,000 miles was put on the car the clutch started acting up again and progressively got worse. the shuttering and stuttering become so bad i thought my car was going to fall apart. from a dead stop to a go (20-30 mph) it had such a hard time shifting gears that the rpm's would just take off. grinding noises under the car upon acceleration. when in cruise control it would just lose speed on it's own, cruise set for 60mph and rpm"s would just drop outta no where like the car was about to stall. took it in and sure enough new clutch and seals were already needed (this car was purchased in april 2015 and the clutch went out in january 2016). they kept the car a wk (at no time was i offered a rental) had to borrow my parents vehicles to get around; my husband needed his car. had the car back a wk and have already taken it in to be reprogrammed b/c yet again we are having shuttering and stuttering issues as well as problems upon acceleration. when i check 2014 focus recalls there are some major recalls. i was issued a recall on my vin# for the tcm already. they have increased my warranty to 100,000 b/c they know i will be back for more repairs and the service guy stated replacing the clutch is only temporary, i will be back for a new one again and again.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while driving 65 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed and the vehicle accelerated in excess. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the shifting gear and the linkage in the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred and multiple warnings were displayed across the message board. in addition, the contact stated that the gear shifter was shifted in park and the reverse position and failed to shift out of those positions. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the failure mileage was 6,000.

From a stop the vehicle has a major problem with acceleration 0-30 seems to be where it's at. the vehicle shudders, revs rpms, de-accelerates, slow to accelerate to speed, and has a metal grinding sound on acceleration. this is not once or twice this is every time that the car has to slow down and pick back up speed. i am afraid to pull out into traffic b/c i don't know that my car will make it up to speed fast enough to not get me rear-ended. the car shakes like it's going to fall apart when we accelerate and almost feels like it doesn't want to go into gear. this is the second ford vehicle that this has happened to my first was a 2012 that had a recall ford wouldn't honor until the part broke and left me stranded on a bridge on my way home from work at night. this is a 2014 that i'm afraid to drive around in with me child b/c it feels as if the car is going to drop my transmission in the middle of the road. i'm also reading that it has problems braking with this acceleration issue and will jolt out into traffic at a stop light. this is from every stop getting ready to accelerate again. my car only has maybe 10,500 miles on it and i've only had it maybe 8 months. ford says they will keep fixing it if it breaks under warranty, but my warranty is only so long then i have to pay for fords' mess up out of my pocket. i don't have that kind of money.

Letter from congressman neugebauer on behalf of constituents of the 19th district of texas re ford safety issues. *smd the consumer owns a 2014 ford focus se with the optional dps6 power shift transmission. the transmission exhibited a severe, erratic movement, along with shuddering/jerking, with the most severe being while the vehicle was in reverse, park or drive on four different occasions. on two of those occasions, it happened when the consumer was accelerating from a complete stop and the vehicle lurched backwards; once hitting a pedestrian and leaving scratches on the back of the vehicle with a dented license plate. on several occasions, the vehicle accelerated on its own and applying the brake did not slow the vehicle down. last year, the vehicle suddenly accelerated and the consumer had to hit a curb, in order to avoid an accident with another vehicle. the consumer stated the vehicle had numerous transmission and engine leaks where seals had to be replaced. five days after the vehicle was inspected, the vehicle went into park while in the midst of driving 65 mph/ the vehicle shook, and revved and the rp's were extremely high, then the vehicle started to slow down without any assistance from the consumer. the vehicle came to a complete stop, an error message appeared that said transmission not in park. *jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while driving 25 mph, the vehicle accelerated rapidly without warning when the brake pedal was depressed and caused a crash. the contact drove into a ditch and the vehicle was destroyed. there were no injuries sustained. a police report was filed. the vehicle was towed. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was 50,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. the contact stated that the transmission jerked between first and third gear. the vehicle was taken to a dealer on more than three occasions where the failure was undetermined. when shifting gears into drive or reverse, the vehicle independently surged. the brake pedal was depressed with force when the failure occurred. the dealer stated that the clutch assembly and the transmission control module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 20,000.

The car is unsafe to drive and it has gotten worse since i purchased it new. as i pulled out into traffic the car suddenly lost power requiring me to quickly push the gas peddle to the floor to avoid getting rear-ended. the car only slightly accelerated, then jerked forward into a hard acceleration and sounded like the engine was going to explode. even though i know about this behavior, (and try to take steps to avoid scenarios like this), the occurrence of this behavior it is very regular, (several times a week), yet erratic and unpredictable, meaning i can not take measure that guarantee it will not happen, nor should i have to. i have spoken with the dealership about this erratic behavior only to be told it will get better as i drive it as the transmission learns my driving habits and will adapt. i have driven many cars and trucks for over 40 years and have never had a problem driving any type vehicle. i can emphatically state that this transmission has not adapted to anything. at all. my concern is that the more miles i put on the car waiting for it to adapt, as per the dealer, the further away i get from being protected by any type lemon law. my basic complaint is that this car is unsafe to drive because of the transmission and it has gotten worse since i purchased it new in february 2015. and, i am told by ford to just drive it because this is normal!?!

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while driving at a low rate of speed, the vehicle hesitated to accelerate and also made an abnormal noise. when the contact applied the accelerator pedal, the abnormal noise grew louder and the vehicle hesitated and shutterd. the vehicle was taken to the dealer twice, but they were unable to provide a specific diagnosis to prevent the failure. the manufacturer was notified and was unable to provide a permanent remedy. the approximate failure mileage was 19,000.

Transmission control module is defective. my car judders severely. failed to get up to speed correct. rpm is 4,500. i have contacted ford corporate, they have failed to execute. there is a recall on the part but there is 6-8 week back order. i do not feel safe driving my vehicle

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. the contact stated that while the accelerator pedal was depressed, the vehicle failed to accelerate. in addition, the gear shifter was jerking when attempting to shift. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the clutch transmission control module needed to be repaired. the vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred numerous time. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 14,908.

I began noticing issues around 8,500 miles. my car would hesitate when i would go from an idle into gear, surge forward, stutter as i was braking or going into speed, and lastly refuse to change gears as i sped up making me think i was in low gear. i now have to make sure all cars are clear before i make turns because my car will lose power as i make turns, which makes me feel extremely unsafe. i drive my car between rochester, ny and buffalo, ny often and this is quite concerning to me. i took it into the ford service department since i am under warranty and i was told it was the clutch assembly part that is malfunctioning. the part is on national backorder, but should be in a couple days and i should be fine to drive my car as it is now. well i looked up the issue and there is a class action lawsuit because of this transmission defect. i don't feel safe at all knowing i am driving with a faulty transmission, if i get in an accident i am at fault!

While driven i had trouble with car jerking when trying to drive then error message transmission at fault and hill side assit not working. it would go for a little while then driving the message kept coming on. rmp would jump real high and not moving then it would catch and jerk and continue going.

The vehicle has problems during initial acceleration from about 10-25 mph range where it exhibits a bucking or vibration. also, it seems to have problems shifting at times at the right times where you may hear a winding sound, as if it's not getting into the right gear properly. i took it to the dealership and they concede that they have been getting these complaints. they just tried reprogramming as they call it, but this has not resolved the problem. on going issue, which i will tell them needs resolution. definitely a safety issue.

The transmission shutters very badly typically when accelerating from a stopped position. sometimes the car will not move forward when i press on the gas and then suddenly jolt forward unpredictably. sometimes it will get stuck in an intersection with virtually no acceleration because the transmission does not shift to the correct gear. i do not feel safe driving this car. ford dealership looked at my car on 6/16/2015 and said they have to order a new transmission, but it will not come in for 8-12 weeks. so i am stuck driving this unsafe car for a long period of time until the new part comes in to fix the problem (if it even fixes the problem).

Since i purchased this vehicle in march of 2014, it has bucked at slow acceleration at speeds of 10-25 miles per hour. this caused vibration of the rear end and inconsistent acceleration. it occurs more often in hot weather. i have had it check twice, but the dealers say that it is normal with this type of transmission. it also is more prevalent in stop and go traffic.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while the driver attempted to resume acceleration after a complete stop, the vehicle vibrated and abruptly accelerated and crashed into the preceding vehicle. there were no injuries and a police report was not filed. the vehicle was taken to the dealer several times for the failure. the dealer replaced the clutch and the computer system was reset; however, the failure was not corrected. the vehicle continued to vibrate and abruptly resumed acceleration. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 7,600.

Ever since around 10,000 miles, my 2014 ford focus has been experiencing delayed acceleration and deceleration, grinding noises coming from the transmission, shaking, rough starts, and shuttering. it's caused the vehicle to lurch forward rapidly after not initially accelerating, with a few close calls in traffic. ford is aware of this problem. i've taken this vehicle in to be serviced, only to have them tell me the part isn't available. it's been 4 months, still waiting. this is unacceptable.

When i am accelerating from a complete stop, the car shakes at higher rpms in first gear and when it is trying to shift into second gear from first. the car haphazardly accelerates or sometimes will not accelerate at all. spoke to the dealer and they said this is normal, but i disagree.

When the vehicle comes to a complete stop then when you speed up it jerks 5 to 8 time failing to speed up. the only way it can speed up is if you press the pedal more and try to go faster. also today 5/6/2015 we were at the interstate and we were in traffic and the car didn't wanted to pick up, only if you press the pedal more then is making the car go faster then i want to go. is like it doesn't want to go no where. then on my way back on the interstate i press the pedal and at 30 mph going up the slope i slowed down it did a hard jerk. other thing i noticed is that when i use the electronic manual shift is delayed making the car go on a high rpm. car purchase date 5/1/2015 2014 ford focus. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. the contact stated that the vehicle shuttered and would not accelerate. the failure occurred sporadically. the failure occurred without warning. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 8,000.

While accelerating, vehicle frequently stalls and/or hesitates to continue acceleration creating a jerking affect until it can actually catch again or provide fuel to accelerate. this typically occurs when pressing on the pedal both when stopped/start or if in motion and accelerate to go onto the highway. this happens frequently while driving on a daily basis.

Vehicle shakes, hesitates, shudders from stop and at slow speeds. very jerky and inconsistent shifting through the first 2 to 3 gears. not as apparent at speeds over 25mph. *tr

The vehicle drives like it is in the wrong gear. it seems like the transmission or something is dragging. it does not go smoothly to another gear. it drives hard for a 2014 car. i don't know what the problem is..... updated 09/30/15*bf

While taking turns at 10 - 15 mph speed and/or while accelerating from a stop, the vehicle gives out a series of rattling noises with the transmission. this seems to occurs at no / partial throttle being applied. at times, while accelerating from stop, the vehicle shatters quite strongly. the shudder is pretty strong when it occurs when accelerating from a stop on an incline. *tr

On numerous occasions, when leaving a stop sign/light, the car will shudder and choke as if it going to turn off. the car idles around 750 rpms when this occurs. i am not sure if that is abnormal or not. unfortunately, it feels as if the issue is occurring more frequently. for example, i have noticed while the car is in motion and at various speeds that some times when i attempt to accelerate the car will not respond as it should while other times it will respond quite quickly and as i would expect. my concern is if the issue is getting worse, will i be put in a potentially hazardous situation that could cause an accident. *tr

While driving in stop and go traffic the car accelerated, lurching forward, instead of stopping when the brakes were applied, causing me to strike the car in front of me. car transmission revved and gave the sound of a car shifting gears, and continued to rev for several seconds after impact. *tr

Since about 6,000 miles, my car "stutters" upon acceleration. going forward from a stopped position, there is hesitation prior to acceleration which is an accident waiting to happen as those behind me accelerate normally. then, it stutters, or hesitates, as i accelerate to a point, at which point acceleration ceases and the rpms race. again, a danger of being hit from behind or the side when merging. i asked my oil change guy to take a look at the transmission, but he refused as he has heard about transmission issues with the ford focus cars and suggested i take it to the dealer. when i called ford to make an appointment, they were well aware of the problem and said they just needed to "recalibrate". my car "passed" their test, but the issue continued. i spoke with the dealership who said he is on the phone with 7-8 ford focus owners a day talking about this issue that is allegedly not a safety concern, but a design which is not a defect. he said if and only if my car were to fail the "test", then they would have permission to order a new part. i took my car in again, it failed, and now i am waiting 12-16 weeks for the part to come in. from what i understood from the dealership, the new part may make things a bit better, but the way it drives will be the same. this design is not only flawed, making for an uncomfortable ride, it is a safety concern. i can only hope the government steps in to force ford to take responsibility and do what's right, because it seems they are unwilling to do so.

This is the second time that my car accelerated on its own, once while stopped, the second time while driving. the first occurrence of occurred while stopped at 0 miles per hour at a drive-through, i had to push on the brakes harder to prevent the car from hitting the car ahead of me. a second occurrence occurred yesterday on february 14 of 2014. i was driving at 35 miles per hour in a 45 miles per hour zone when the car automatically without warning accelerated; i had to steer the car into a snow bank and i almost hit a large tree i am very concerned about the above occurrences and i will get in touch with my ford dealership tomorrow to see what can be done after the first incident i took the car to the ford dealership wart was evaluated and i was advised that there is nothing wrong with the car. *tr

I have a 2014 ford focus that shakes when it accelerates, at times is feels like there is not enough power. i got a software update yesterday and the car still shakes, ford says its "normal" due to their power shift technology. i don't feel comfortable with their excuse and they should find a fix for focus' asap. *tr

We have had problems with the acceleration since we bought the car. the car does not change gears cleanly. instead it may hesitate before changing gears, act like it is in neutral with high revolutions and no change in acceleration. we have to play with the pedal constantly to try to make it act normal in changing gears even thought this is an automatic transmission car.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while attempting to accelerate from a stop, the contact depressed the accelerator pedal and the rpms increased; however, the vehicle hesitated to move forward. the vehicle was diagnosed and repaired. the clutch was replaced and recalibrated, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and repaired four times for the exact same failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. the failure mileage was approximately 6,000.

When i am at a complete stop and i attempt to accelerate, my ford jerks rapidly. in order to drive the vehicle i have to press on the gas forcibly in order to accelerate to a normal speed limit. after several attempts to complain to the orginal dealership metro ford on noland road of the issue i was told that it was a shudder transmission problem. the ford dealership will not solve the issue and although they stated they reset the issue they try to convince me that it is normal when in fact it is not. this vehicle is an extreme hazard and unsafe to drive for me and my children. i am afraid it will stall at a busy intersection in the future.

Traction control issue.... during snowstorm , trying to drive up a hill with a left hand turn , tires lost traction and car electronically reduced rpm speed... loss of speed almost sent car sideways into ditch. had to turn around and get run at hill 4 more times.... each time when traction with tires was broken ...rpms were dropped to nothing leaving car stopped near stalling in middle of hill. will be dealing with dealership soon.. i feel that the fix for this is going to be remove fuse for traction control.....or disable traction control system.. this car is a stick shift... i can see how another 120 reports on this page with auto transmissions, may be the same issue..... *tr

The vehicle lurches rapidly after nearly stalling when transitioning between 1st and second gear and it nearly caused me to rear-end a driver in front of me. i have a great fear of this happening again. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle jerked and accelerated in excess independently. the vehicle was taken to a dealer. the technician diagnosed that the seals needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 11,000. the vin was unavailable.

Transmission shifting problems: hesitation/jerking while shifting; this problem is well known by ford & the dealers; transmission slips. anytime/where i'm driving my automatic-transmission 2014 focus and press the accelerator after slowing down to or starting in first gear (as in from a stop), the transmission races as if caught between gears. this makes me press the accelerator down more to force it into gear. sometimes it feels like the car is coasting along in neutral until it kicks into gear. this has also happened on the highway between other gears - there is loss of forward motion. i've been to ford to "reset the transmission gauge" 4 times now- including for the 2 recalls for this dps6 transmission. the last time they had the car i had a rental for just over 3 weeks while they were replacing parts that they claimed caused the slipping. since then, the problem has been better, but whenever i turn on the a/c and it's raining out, the problem returns. this has been going on since the 2nd month of ownership (oct. 2014) - a 5-year problem. there are several recalls and articles (eg https://ford.oemdtc.com/1650/14m01-dps6-transmission-clutch-shudder-transmission-input-shaft-seal-warranty-extension-2011-2014-ford-fiesta-focus) that relate to ford's knowledge and repair attempts for this issue. date on this form is first occurrence, not the last

My car has been shuttering and not shifting smoothly for a few weeks as well as loss of power when taking off from a stop or very slow speed. this incident: car shifted into neutral for a few (5?) seconds before engaging in higher gear while i was on freeway. *tr

Loses power during acceleration from dead stop or onto freeway, transmission bucks and does not engage from first gear to second gear in alleged automatic transmission. slips into neutral while the car is in motion. dealership said that ford is aware of the problem, but has no plans for a long term fix.

My 2014 ford focus began shuddering almost immediately after i bought it, which was may 2014. i took it to my ford dealer to explain. i was told it wasn't a problem and i should continue driving it. the shuddering continued. it normally happens when pulling out from a stopped or near stopped position, on flat and inclined surfaces. i took it back to the ford dealer once again. they said they adjusted a few things and i would be fine. took it back a 3rd time and they said they had to order a new clutch. scheduled an appointment to have that done. it worked fine for a few months, but i was back at the dealer multiple times with the shuddering and transmission/clutch issue. it has been replaced twice in my 2014 ford focus. i went back again to complain of same issue, i was told my warranty ran out and they could only replace clutch if i paid for it!!! i still drive it daily, with the shuddering. worried at every stop, i hope the car doesn't stall, speed up or cause an accident!!! it occurs on city streets, ramps onto highways, at traffic lights, stop signs and yields. car is usually going from stopped or slow speed going straight or turning. please help me!!!

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while the vehicle was at a complete stop, the contact depressed the accelerator pedal and the vehicle jerked, stalled, and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the contact was able to restart the vehicle after several attempts. in addition, the contact experienced a failure with the gear shifter changing gears. the vehicle was taken to the dealer (monaco ford, 767 new london turnpike, glastonbury, ct, 06033,) where it was diagnosed that the e-vap chamber failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted and made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 20,000.

I have had my focus in to be repaired four times for the clutch plate assembly shuddering/jumping/hesitating upon starting up from a stopped position.the last time it was in was march of 2016, and is now doing the same thing in june 2016. this was first noticed at 12000 miles, but not addressed until the milage was 15500. this disqualified it for the buy back with ford through the bbb autoline. the clutch plate has been replaced twice and adjusted the sensor two other times. this is a safety concern in the event of pulling onto the interstate or in heavy traffic and does not give the acceleration needed. i have asked a couple of times for a buy back, but have been told no. please help me and other consumers to have this issue addressed and fixed.

Vehicle shudders upon starting forward movement or when slowing or stopping and then restarting forward movement. downshifting into lower gear and then accelerating produces a shudder, severe loss of power, must accelerate heavily or vehicle continues to shake and shimmy while not accelerating. feels as if the engine/transmission is going to shake out of the automobile. *tr

Upon acceleration, car hesitates, stutters, shakes and makes a grinding noise. when entering the highway, it really hesitated and took longer than usual to get to the speed limit. hence, someone was coming up quickly behind me and was very irate with me. this could have caused an accident or something other . . . like road rage by the other driver. *tr

On 7/31/14, my ford focus hatchback accelerated while parking and crashed into a high chain-link fence. significant front end damage to the vehicle was repaired. the airbags never deployed when i hit the fence and small tree and i was lucky that no one was near the car when it malfunctioned.subsequently, the car has been parked! i have tried to communicate with ford motor co. by fax, letter and phone over the last 2 months.the dealership wants nothing to do with this car. we are reluctant to sell and want this car off the market. we have no voice. i continue to read all complaints on your site. when are you going to do anything about it! i can't put my grandkids in this car and i don't want anyone's child in this car.please call me. we need to get this car off the market before someone is injured or worse! *tr

Beginning at 6000 miles and 7 months of operation, my 2014 ford focus began operating erratically. the transmission exhibited physical shudders, lurching when coming out of 0mph, and bogging down/failing to shift to accelerate when merging onto the highway. the first and most noticeable time, it resulted in my hitting the bumper of the person in front of me and a more than $5000 repair to their car. at the time, i was a safe distance away at a drive-thru and applied gas to move forward. at first, nothing happened, then the car lurched forward suddenly. i tapped the person in front of me-- no one was hurt and no damage was done to my car, but damage was done to theirs. this has continued to worsen until now the car exhibits violent shuddering coming out of first and second and has problems accelerating, to the point where it has nearly gotten me hit going through an intersection and caused issues merging onto highways.
