We have classified the 948 complaints from 2014 Ford Focus about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
Vehicle stalls as if it has lost power. engine light active. transmission affected due to vehicle not accurately shifting gears (i.e. drive to reverse or vice versa)
While driving down the highway, the check engine light came on unexpectedly. shortly thereafter, the car went into limp mode and i lost all power to the wheels. when i tried to accelerate, the engine would rev but would not accelerate. i was forced to pull over on the highway as a result of this transmission failure.

Was driving vehicle then all of a sudden it started shuddering and seemed like it was having trouble shifting gears pulled into parking lot then vehicle wouldn't go into reverse all other gears worked fine and the rpms on vehicle would rev up on their own without pressing on the gas pedal after about 20 to 30 minutes was finally able to get out of reverse

I have a 2014 ford focus which i purchased new from the dealership which is equipped with a duel power clutch transmission a class action suit was filed against ford due to the poor design of the transmission in which consumers were having constant problems with their transmissions. about a week ago i was stopped in a intersection and when i went to accelerate my car stalled and had difficulty accelerating.this had happened twice within the last week overall my car has always had poor acceleration and hesitation but i became urgent when my car took hesitated for so long and the check engine light came on i have bought a new car with just under 99k and only 4 years old which makes very concerned due to the poor design of the transmission that my and other ford focus owners cars are unsafe to drive my car could of stalled in the middle of the light and i could have been hit
Car shudders when accelerating from a stop through the 1st gear. had software reset and clutch replaced, but the problem still exists. there is a technical service bulletin on this issue, and as i understand, i can have the software reset and clutch replaced 2 more times, and then possibly get some monetary abatement if it's still not fixed.
Every time my ford focus shifts from 1st-2nd or 2nd-3rd the entire car not only shutters but its extremely sluggish and seems like it's going to stall out. (automatic transmission) there are no warning light lit on my dash and the car barely has 56,000 miles on it. when i bought the car it had 35,000 miles and the problem existed then and has progressively gotten worse. yesterday i was at a yield sign to enter the round about near my house and when i pressed the gass my car shuttered horribly and only went forward a few feet, i was nearly struck by a truck that had to suddenly swerve to keep from hitting us. i took my foot off the gas. when i pressed it again, this time with more force, it shuttered and jerked so hard it forcefully threw my head back against the seat! my 5yr old daughter that was in the back seat was crying uncontrollably, scared because we were almost hit by a truck! the seatbelts in the backseat of my car, have came unbuckled several times while my 2yr old and 5yr old children were in their carseats. when i attempt to rebuckle them it takes about 15- 20 minutes of my consistently trying to get the buckle to latch onto the seatbelts!
I have taken this vehicle into a dealership for transmission hesitation 3 times and they tell me there is no recall on my car and charge me $175 diagnosis fee. ford knows there is a problem with this transmission and will not take care of its customers. i know i will never purchase another ford because of this issue. wheen i accelerate the car hesitate jerks shake before it actually goes.
My 2014 ford focus shudders and jerks when taking off from a stop. this is extremely dangerous especially at traffic lights or on the highway because it is extremely difficult to resume driving after a slow down, and i am scared that i will get hit because my car cannot accelerate fast enough. this happened recently in march of this year on the highway, and i was fortunate to escape being hit at the last minute. i have taken the car to two different ford dealerships in houston for them to check if the car is part of the transmission recall, but they wanted to charge me for the diagnostic test, i do not think this is fair since this is a known issue with this car.
Takata recall and clutch replaced at least twice by seymour ford in jackson, mi. on 3/4/19 my car died at a two-way stop sign and i was lucky to push it out of harm's way. it was towed to seymour and they soldered a part back together.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while driving 40 mph, the vehicle began to stall and shut off in the middle of the road. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the contact was able to drive 20 mph to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired on april 11, 2019, but the failure continued. the contact also experienced a failure when trying to use the reverse gear. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. the failure mileage was 108,836.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while operating the vehicle, the engine randomly shuddered and hesitated. the vehicle was taken to village ford (23535 michigan ave, dearborn, mi) where it was diagnosed that the power train control module was faulty and needed to be reprogrammed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. the failure mileage was 29,000. *tt *tr
Purchased 2014 ford focus in dec. 2018, less than 31,000 miles in excellent visible condition from family friend for my child away at college. was informed by previous owner that the when starting from 0 there is a small stutter as car shifts into 1st gear. a ford dealership instructed them that there is a 10yr/150,000 mile warranty extension (14m01 -dp56 transmission clutch shudder), but cannot do anything until it gets worse. taking ownership of the 2014 focus, we did experience a shudder-shudder. my child informed me late feb, early march the issue has gotten worse. home for spring break, 03/24/19 week, took for test drive, and the issue is significantly worse; jumping-shuddering-jerking, shudder-shudder when shifting from zero to 1st and also 2nd gear. 03/25/19 took to my mechanic who instructed was transmission issue and ford has various service publications and advised to take to ford dealership. i contacted local dealership as well as ford customer service 03/25/19 to make appointment and start claim. 03/25/19 pm dropped off at autonation ford. 03/28/2019 informed transmission clutch is out of specification and defective, and will cost $2060 +tax to replace. also informed that the defective clutch is not covered with the extended warranty (14m01 -dp56 transmission clutch shudder). also that the vehicles original 5yr/60,000 mile warranty expired on 02/08/2019. 03/28/19, contacted ford customer service , received case#, and instructed that my issue has been logged but ford will not do anything, that although the vehicle has 32,986 miles, the 5yr warranty, expired 02/08/2019. ford did inform me that i can contact nhtsa. although customer service was polite, this is absolutely not acceptable customer service with a known defective issue. without resolution, this is, was the 4th and last ford product my family of 5 will ever purchase, and advise others also to not.
Transmission shuddering. clutch replacement
Car shakes/shatter everytime it shifts between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear. now the transmission it goes back and forward to neutral between shifting.the issues is getting worse and dangerous to drive. after reviewing various complaints i find out that all fords from 2012 and newer have the same issues and ford has refused to corrected. they only have a recall on the pcm computer but refused to replace the clutch or transmission. extending the warranty to 7 years or 100,000 mileage shouldn't be allowed as remedy since the issue continues to come back. it is time for ford to take ownership on their mistake and be forced to recall all transactions on our cars.
My car alerted traction control/hill assist issue while driving under 35 mph. (note i work 3rd shift) next morning got off work and it was dead but was able to jump it. next night i removed keys from ignition from parked car and vehicle continued to run. next morning car would not start and was able to be jumped. took to local ford dealership and they diagnosed it as the tcm (transmission control module) module which they replaced and returned my car. same night car would not start again. took over an hour to get the car charged just to drive to dealership 3 minutes away and the car would not go over 1500 rpm and wouldn't allow me to go over 15 mph. got to the dealership and had worker witness a test drive in the passenger seat, then parked withe worker still inside and she was able to witness the car not shutting off after key removal. notified today from service department manager it is now the bcm (body control module) and will be $2900 plus tax to replace the bcm as well as the wire harness that has melted now due to this issue. ford has told me that they have no programs or recalls to help cover these costs. after research i have discovered that this is and issue with others that have the same vehicle and ford issued a recall for the 2015 ford focus for this same bcm issue but of course my vin (2014 ford focus se hatchback) is not included. i have had nothing but issues related to the transmission and computer of my car in the 49 months that i have owned it.
Hesitates when on the expressway shutters while driving very unsafe to drive but when i take it to ford dealer they can not duplicate problem so they dont do anything so i end uo wasting my day.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while driving 70 mph, the vehicle lost power and stalled. the contact was unable to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to bob bowen ford (located at 2189 us-40, brazil, in 47834, (812) 442-2000) where it was diagnosed that the transmission control module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. the manufacturer was contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 180,000.
Takata recall complaint. my son and i purchased a 2014 ford focus together. the rear door was a constant problem in latching properly and this is complaint #1. complaint #2 is the inability to drive the car any more. the car motor seized (my son said the the engine blew up) while driving on the freeway in calif. and had to be towed away. my ex wife spent $4,500 to have the transmission repaired prior to this incident, by a local repair shop in california only to have the car back in the same undriveable condition. apparently the new transmission now had electrical defects. the local ford dealer told my son to take the car back to the repair shop that performed the work on the car. the concept of the 14mo2 recall or failed service action never arose. we still have a balance on the loan to ford credit and an undriveable 2014 car. i find it hard to believe that after patronizing ford by purchasing 2 explorers prior to this focus, that such mechanical issues would exist.
The vehicle idles rough, the transmission slips and the rpms get high in first and second gears, it takes forever to accelerate, the fuel gauge will say 100 miles till empty then die on you, i have been stranded 5 times in less than a year due to that, recently on 2/8/20 the car wouldn't accelerate in the middle of a busy intersection and proceeded to stall in the middle of the road. i had to literally push the car out of the intersection and into a store parking lot during 5pm traffic. i cannot believe this car received a 5 star safety rating, i feel a number of things about this model car and company but safe definitely is not one of them. doors that have defective latches, opening at anytime, transmission problems leading to cars constantly almost rear ending you, and a car that can stall in the middle of a busy intersection or freeway, is not by any means a definition of the word safe. i will never buy another ford again, and i will convince any else to not buy from a company that values profits over consumer safety by installing cheap, defective parts and components
When accelerating, either from a complete stop or while in motion, car shudders violently while switching gears. sometimes this results in loss of acceleration.this has scared us quite a few times when accelerating through an intersection as the power loss has put us in situations when an accident could easily have occurred. this shudder happens 90% of the time when accelerating, and is getting worse. clutches were replaced not long after we bought it (bought used from dealer in 2016), and we were told by the dealer in 2018 that the clutches needed to be replaced again, and since they were 2 months out of warranty, we would have to cough up the $1800 ourselves to replace the clutches for the second time in a car that was then 4 years old.
My car has literally lost power and turned off while driving at speeds in excess of 55 mph on multiple occasions, once almost resulting in a crash in a local traffic tunnel. i have also been stranded twice without fuel due to innacurate distance to empty readings. the local autonation ford dealership in mobile, al has refused to reprogram the powertrain control module per the recall issued by the nhsta without a fee of $130. what recourse do i have to have this recall addressed at no expense which is clearly expressed in nhtsa recall number 18v735.
'tamara recall' i have a transmission problem that's been fixed 3 times and it's giving me a problem and a few months ago i had a little fender bender i was stopped at a light and had my foot on the brake and all of a sudden i hit the car in front of me. i blame it on me, but my foot was still on the brake but i said i must of let up on it or something. but now i am reading that this has happened to several other people with the transmission problem.
The car turned completely off, engined light would come on and off, the car would stall and while driving on the interstate the acceleration didn't work and the car started moving backwards.
Rear doors - latches were bad. passenger side opened while turning. used bungee cords to keep it shut until latches could be replaced. transmission - chattered upon driving, like when 1st learning to drive stick shift. sometimes it would not shift until reaching high rpms. occasionally would momentarily seem to pop into neutral. that happened january 25, 2019. was pulling out of a restaurant after dark, turning left on a 4 lane divided highway. it paused half way across the near lane, a car was coming directly toward me and i turned too sharply and ran over the median. ended up cracking the oil pan, messing up the steering and cracking the engine. it was a total loss. i was livid when i found out that the transmission was well known to be defective and don chalmers ford knowingly sold it to me.
Takata recall. while going down the highway, my car shuddered harder than usual and seemed like it lost power. my transmission light came on soon after this. i took my car to a local dealership and they explained that there was a recall on my car for a control module that would cause my car to stall without notice. when my car stalled it made a loud knock and my clutch brake broke. the dealership told me that the breaking of my clutch brake could not be covered in the recall because it is different section of the transmission. my question is if the transmission is faulty to begin with then wouldn't it affect my clutch brake and cause it to be under too much stress? i now have to pay 1500$ to have it fixed, but the recall is free of charge.
Transmission issues, sometime cant get the trans to shift its a danger pulling out into traffic and on the highway. the clutches in my trans already been replaced and still not fixed this is a know issue to ford and there telling my vin is not covered my car was built 2 weeks later from the ones covered by the extended warranty
The 2014 ford focus transmission control module (tcm) is defective. in 2018, the vehicle was at a stop light and when the driver began to accelerate, the vehicle went into reverse. numerous reoccurring issues most recent was on or about 1/16/19. this is the 7th time the 2014 ford focus has been taken into the ford dealership for the same issues of shuddering, misfiring, faulty clutch, engine light on and tcm malfunction . dealer service counselor/technician reports the tcm is defective and owner will continue to have this issue whenever the module overheats.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. the contact stated that the vehicle would not shift into reverse and switched from gear to gear without warning. the check engine indicator was illuminated. the vehicle was taken to galpin ford (15505 roscoe blvd, north hills, ca 91343, (818) 787-3800) where it was diagnosed that the clutch failed. a new clutch along with a motor mount and battery wires were installed. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not assist. the failure mileage was 113,000.
Car studdering hard time going faster even getting on freeway, car stalled at light with other cars behind all of a sudden multiple times
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. the contact stated that while driving, the vehicle delays to accelerate and the abnormally shook. the dealer and the manufacturer had not been contacted. the failure mileage was 70,000.
Had the trans clutches repaired, and still having the same issues: car shudders and shakes while taking off from a light and acts like it is slipping in between gears . makes stopping and starting or entering a highway very dangerous . seems that this problem is an on going issue with this year model ford . there should be a recall or the trans should have a lifetime warranty for fords know daul clutch problems.
Transmission slips in 1st and 2nd gear, sometimes so bad that acceleration is lagging. dangerous in traffic.
There car has a tendency to slip out of gear in first and second gears. when you start to drive, the car acts like it does not want to move and then will suddenly sprint forward unexpectedly. other times, the car will start to move as expected but it will be very jittery and jerky bouncing you around while it gets up to speed leading to unsafe operating conditions. this has been an ongoing and daily problem since purchasing the vehicle. ford has said these are "normal" in conversations with my dealers and have not looked at the issue in detail
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while driving various speeds, the vehicle suddenly shut off, erroneously shifted, and surged backwards while stopped. the vehicle was taken to crossroads ford of wake forest (10101 capital blvd, wake forest, nc) where it was repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 18v735000(fuel system). after the contact retrieved the vehicle, the failure continued. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 95,000.
When driving down the highway going 70 mph, the door bell started sounding, the check brake fluid read out came on like the car had a major problem electrical. this happened four times thru this past winter 2018/2019. the temperature on the dash was 10 degrees or below every time it happened. rude awakening on the highway. also the front wheels will spin when trying to take off from a stop sign on occasion. like it can't get going. one more thing is going down the highway i've had no power like the car is in neutral when i've had the cruise on. this has happened twice. i don't have exact dates one date was 12/26/2018
Takata recall.engine stalls w/o notice, inside cab reeks of gas smell. ford remedy is to keep gas tank 1/2 full. doesn't work. just filled up and still stalled while entering into the freeway. i did not use cheap fuel. very dangerous and the remedy does not work. took car to dealership twice now and they confirmed it's 1 of 10 focus on the recall. in other words 10% of their focus have this recall and symptoms. i called ford corp and they gave me 2 options, 1)drive car with 1/2 tank or more 2) don't drive it at all. i need it for work #2 is not an option. ford will not give a loaner car even i told them their remedy is not working and can cause bodily injury or even death.
I received a letter from the manufacturer about a recall dealing with the clutch, i took my car to the ford dealership just like the letter stated!well they refused to replace the part, stating my car didn't meet the requirements to be replaced! i left with the car still not fixed! that was 6 months ago, i just took it back to the dealership again, and of course they refusing to replace anything on it under the recall! so, i was told that my car warranty has expired, ( it was still under warranty when i first took it to them) now they trying to make me pay 2300 dollars to get it fixed! don't every buy a ford!
Transmission stutters and stalls when i accelerate. i have had it into the dealership several times to correct the problem but it continues to stutter and stall. it has become a dangerous situation and i fear for my safety and other passengers.
Vehicle shifts into gear hesitates/jerks frequently. typically happens at lower speeds.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while driving low speeds, the vehicle vibrated abnormally. the contact also stated that the rpms revved up to over 3,000 rpms. the contact stated that the vehicle would remain at a low speed even with the increased rpms. the vehicle was taken to stevens ford (located at 717 bridgeport ave, milford, ct 06460, (203) 783-5900) where it was diagnosed that the transmission clutch needed to be replaced and the tcm needed to be reprogrammed. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 85,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. the contact stated that the vehicle jerked while driving on several occasions. the contact lost control of the vehicle during the failure. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to romeo ford of kingston (128 ny-28, kingston, ny 12401, (845) 251-4077) where a new clutch was installed. the failure continued after the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 30,000. *tt consumer stated description is wrong, she never lost control. consumer cannot control heat and passenger side axle is rusted.*jb
I bought this car new in december 2014. since i had no experience with this dual clutch transmission, i did not recognize the clutch was bad on test drive. it shuttered in first and second gear and shifted out of first gear in an unusual way. after about a year, i asked the dealer to check it out. the clutch was bad and replaced. it worked beautifully. a year later, i was back for a second new clutch. now about a year later, i am back for a third clutch. the car only has 25,900 miles on it. the dealer has been great but i won't be able to keep this up after my extended warranty expires. the car has always been unpredictable with acceleration. note to everyone, don't pull out in front of someone with one of these cars. you may or may not get a proper response from the transmission. after i had the car a year, my wife went to test drive a new mazda for herself. we were in my focus. the mazda dealer told me up front they would not take a focus on a trade-in because they've had too many that had to be taken to the ford dealership for repair after they traded for them. so, they made a decision not to take any more on trade. this is very telling. the government should force ford to recall this transmission and replace them with better ones. it is not fair to the consumer that they've been stuck with dangerous junk. i'm a ford guy all the way, but his transmission is the worst.
This is a transmission problem as i've been told by fords mechanics. when you push the accelerator their is vibration and hesitation when speeding up. sometimes when you push the accelerator it's luck the car is in neutral for a couple seconds. it has been to ford for this problem a couple of times. apparently it's the only for car with an electric shifting transmission
This vehicle has had door issues where the door would open unexpectantly, the transmission has caused hydroplaining and has also caused the car to stall on the freeway. even though they fixed the transmission the problem has returned and insist on being a continual issue. now there is an additional recall for december and that is cpv. when i contacted ford in order to have a refund or be able to return the car and switch it out for something else... i was told no there wasn't an option to do so. is this true that i have to just continue going along with the car and continue to have these types of issues through the lifeblood of this vehicle?
Vehicle only has 63,000 miles. the ford powershift dual-clutch transmission is defective and causes the car to jerk, shake, hesitate, and shutter when the accelerator is depressed to start the car moving from a stopped stationary position. this most typically occurs once the vehicle has warmed up. ford dealership confirmed the clutch assembly needs to be replaced at a cost of $1650. dealership informed me only option is to contact ford customer service to see if they will cover the repair which they refused. this exact issue is well documented in ford tech service bulletin 16-0109 dated april 2016. there is already a ford recall for this exact issue that covers this same vehicle through june 2014 manufacture dates; however, my vehicle was manufactured in july 2014. ford's response is vehicle is 3000 miles over the standard power train warranty and missed the existing recall manufacture cutoff date by one month. there is also a current class action lawsuit against ford for this same exact issue. ford dealership's own mechanics state this is a very common complaint and they deal with this exact customer issue on a routine basis. there are no aftermarket solutions available and independent mechanics cannot service the vehicle transmission because the work requires a proprietary ford tool to remove and replace the leaking transmission seal kit which independent mechanics do not have access to. please review and consider extending the existing ford recall to cover additional model year vehicles facing this defective ford dual-clutch design. the ford clutch design seems to be defective and is affecting additional vehicles beyond the existing recall model year vehicles.
2014 ford focus. consumer writes in regards to several safety recalls received on vehicle after purchase. *ld the consumer stated the transmission would slip while traveling uphill with the cruise control activated, the headlights shut off, and the engine would knock. *js
Was driving down highway and lost power, had to coast off at exit and limp to ford dealer where it cost a substantial amount of money to repair the transmission including was told clutch, and packs. extremely dangerous situation if i wasn't in the right hand lane. i have had shudder and power issues since the vehicle was brand new, but was told by manufacture and dealers that it was normal for the automatic transmission. due to manufacture and dealer claims, the transmission was never serviced prior to catastrophic failure at highway speeds.
I bought my 2014 ford focus from a dealership 2 yrs ago. the first week of driving it i noticed a "shuddering " feeling after accelerating from a stop. i took it back to the dealership that week and the salesman tried to tell me that was normal for this car due to ther "special" transmission that the focuses have. a week later, after nearly getting broadsided due to the shuddering and not being able to accelerate going up a hill from a stop, i brought it back again and had the service manager go for a ride with me and he agreed, i had a problem. long story short, 2 yrs later and 3 times having the transmission dropped and new clutch installed, i want out from under this lemon of a car. yesterday i had all this done for the 3rd time under warranty but when it happens again w/in the next year, and i fully expect it to, my car will no longer be under warranty. i can not afford a $2500 fix once a yr! i have started the process to have a possible buy back as i still owe a considerable amt on my loan. no one at ford seems to care. there really is no fix for this problem. the internet is flooded with complaints about these cars. i've also read that some people have gotten a letter extending their warrenty to 7 yrs or 100,000 miles. why haven't i gotten that letter yet? ford needs to make this right! this is a lousy unsafe car!
