Recently reported STEERING problems on 2014 Ford Focus

Steering wheel has locked twice after vehicle had started and was moving. first was when leaving a garage at work and moving forwards on a turn. second was when trying to back out of a parking spot in reverse and locked up. both times the hud popped up a message indicating failure. took to dealer to diagnose and they said i need a new steering rack for $2300. seems strange or faulty on the company considering it is a 2014 focus with only 38k miles on it that this would fail so soon. never been in an accident. i am hoping this doesn't happen while driving, otherwise it might not just be repair problem but a wrongful death suit against ford. being unable to move your steering wheel while driving is very dangerous and i am confused the estimate to repair was so high. other websites indicate well under $1,000 to replace a steering rack with parts and labor. i suggest ford fix this problem with a recall before it gets worse for me and other owners.

I have had this 2014 ford focus since early 2015. i have had problems out of this car since i have had it, with the dealership not ever finding out what was wrong. it started with power train issues which they had issued a recall for and i had brought to them and the dealership still did not fix. the last two weeks the car has begun having steering issues. while i was driving it just locked up and i had to coast to a stop and restart it. it drove fine after it sat for a minute and i restarted it, then three days later would not turn again after i started the vehicle while parked in my driveway and was getting ready to drop my children off at school and then head to work myself. i once again had to turn the vehicle of and let it sit for a minute and had to restart it. it ran okay for another three days. this morning it once again while parked in my driveway will not turn and the steering assist light came on the car. this time it will not turn at all after i have restarted the car several times.

I had nothing but problems with this car i've had it for eight months and i am in a death trap ford is trying to kill me i swear to god i've taken this car in for transmission alignment tire rotation is a full blown body inspection my car pulls me left alright i never watch but i never know which way i'm going i come off the freeway and i better be prepared for head on collision i had a ford tec , drive with me in this dangerous car and he to felt the car pool one way or the other. back to the service department guess what there is nothing they can do about it .[xxx] ford recall staring gears..recall 14v514000 another 16v643000 another 15v813000 more fuel system gasoline devilettes fuel pump many more.. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Start with the transmission rpm go between five and seven after a stop sign are trying to merge onto the freeway second all coming off the freeway are coming to a complete stop anywhere in the street the congress poll either left or right you never really know which way causing you to lose control of the car

Ability to turn heavily degraded; loud squealing when turning the steering wheel; strong force required to make turns; loss of power steering; unsafe to drive; ford dealership diagnosed failed rack and pinion

Steering wheel acted like it lost power and as i tried to avoid a curb, instead of avoiding the curb the vechile hit the curb and blew out two tires and more damage. i will find out when i go to the ford dealer. this is the second accident i have had with a steering issue with this vechile. sterling has been an issue where it acts like manual if the car sits or around water. car has also had clutch and multiple service for transmission issues.

Cpsc: a week ago, my son was driving app 45 miles per hour when suddenly the power steering locked, jerking his vehicle to the left, across the adjacent lane on a 2 lane highway. he attempted to redirect the vehicle, but the steering was locked and he could not control the car. *dt the consumer stated the vehicle became airborne. the seat belt locked and the airbag deployed. *js

The electronic power steering (epas), or driving assistance system, displays an error: "steering assist fault; service required." ford focus vehicles are outfitted with the electronic steering assist system install of the standard fluid-based power steering pumps. from forums and blogs, the problem looks to happen after turning the car off, then back on again. the sensor for this system looks to not triggering the steering assist.

When i parked my car it was in perfect working condition. the car sat for a few days and when i went to go drive it again the steering wheel was locked up while the car was on then it unlocked after a few seconds. when i turned the wheel both ways there was a weird noise (like tire on the pavement but worse) and a grinding/vibration in the steering wheel. i drove the car anyways think maybe it just needing to be driven after just sitting. while only a 100 yards down the road (city street) the steering wheel locked up for a second they unlocked. had my dad look at my car and drive it to make sure i wasn't crazy and he couldn't find anything visually but said it wasn't right. took to dealership the next morning. the dealership had no idea what was wrong with my car. all the technician and even the manager was stumped. not a good sign. they had to contact the help desk for assistant. they finally got an answer 4 days later that the steering racking pin was bad and needed to be replaced. it was out of warranty of course so the cost of part is going to be about $1900 plus labor so i looking at around $2100. i was able to get cost to only be $560 as a goodwill cost from the dealership.

The steering wheel on my 2014 ford focus se came loose one morning. no indication of looseness in the weeks leading up. the steering wheel just became very wobbly and loose. the ford dealership stated it was not covered under warranty and the comprehensive extended warranty wouldn't cover it either, the issue: a nut that holds the steering wheel to the steering column came loose. according to the technician, there was not much loctight on the bolt. $200 later i have the same nut tightened back down with newly added loctight. fast forward and on 3/14/2018 ford announced a recall affecting 1.4 million ford fusions that have this very same issue. yet i have a focus not a fusion. this issue is not seclusive to just the fusion line up and ford needs to expand their recall to put the same fix in place for all affected models. perhaps the loctight isn't enough and the focus needs the new aggressive threaded bolt with the nylon nut.

I only bought the car last year. now, i cannot hardly steer it. the steering wheel locks up. i have to fight to turn it. a few mechanics took a look at it, at a shop, and they said it was the steering column, that it is defective. there are other reports about ford knowing there is an issue with the steering. i want a car that is safe. this car has had issues, continuously, since i bought it. now, i am stuck with paying almost $400/month on a car that i cannot drive. this is not fair. besides not fair, i do not want to end up dead, or any of my family members dead, because of a defect in the safety of the vehicle.

While driving home through the village at under 30mph, slowing down from 30mph because of traffic stop ahead, the right front side of vehicle crashed down and control was lost causing me to sideswipe parked vehicle. the pieces of the front end appear to have failed and were falling all over the road.

2014 ford focus power steering issue while driving this vehicle the power steering failed while making a right turn on a busy roadway in a urban area. the steering wheel locked in the turning position and the power steering assist warning light came on. i had to put the vehicle in park and turn the ignition off. i turned the ignition back on and put the vehicle in drive and the vehicle's power steering failed once more and the steering wheel locked a second time. i once again put the vehicle in park and turned off the ignition and removed the key. i waited several seconds and started the ignition, placed the vehicle in drive and the vehicle once again failed. i had the car taken to the dealership for servicing and was told that this is a common issue this vehicle has and it would take several weeks to repair due to the volume of repairs this dealership has at the moment. i had this same vehicle repaired several months ago for the transmission issue that is currently under recall. the car performed fairly well after the repair. the same hesitation issue began again a few weeks ago and now this issue arose as well. i asked the dealer if this too would be covered under the recall / warranty and was told the transmission was but they did not know if the power steering issue was but would get me an answer from ford. i've read all the other complaints regarding this vehicles issues and my experience is the exact same. there's no doubt in my mind that ford is well aware of this issue judging on how many formal complaints have been issued. i will be letting go of this vehicle when it is repaired. i will not operate this 2014 ford focus in good conscience knowing full well that it presents a significant liability to my safety and the safety of others.

My daughter was driving her new/used ford focus into town and the epas--power steering assist fault coded and she had no power steering. she was going roughly 55 and she could notice it becoming harder to steer. by the time she made it so a parking lot for safety it was close to non-steerable. it became hard for her to steer and luckily she did not have or cause and accident with the sudden change. she tried to assess what was wrong which is when we learned there is no powersteering fluid as it has and eletric steering assist instead. it doesn't work now and shortly after this code faulted the entire car shut down. it won't start and is useless--ford replaced a perfectly good steering system with crap. i hope nobody gets hurt be this defective system.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. the contact stated while the vehicle was operated at normal speeds and it experienced a loss of power steering. the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle towed to chapman ford where it was diagnosed the steering column needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure however, no further assistance was offered. the failure mileage was approximately 31,000.

Upon startup no power steering, making steering extremely difficult. dashboard message stating "electronic steering assist fault needs service now" diagnosis came back steering gear is bad. class action has been filed for 2012-14 ford focus as well as 2010-2014 ford fusion so it is a known issue but still no assistance by ford.

Electric failure of power steering. i was told that there was a "short" that caused the power steering mechanism to fail. less than 3 years and 48k miles. sudden failure with total loss of power steering.

After being stalled in traffic for over an hour i pulled into a gas station and started my vehicle to leave. immediately i could feel something wrong with my steering and my alert popped on and said peer steering assist warning. called dealership and they said it's a common for the electric component to fail after idling. they said that's this has happened to people as they are driving. steering just fails. they said it was a fuse that overheats after idling for so long without warning. if this is a component that fails that affects steering it needs to be fixed and changed.

While driving my car the steering became difficult all of a sudden and immediately after an error read "steering fault service now". fortunately i was on a side road and able to pull over as i was pulling over an error then read "steering loss stop safely". now i have to have my car towed to the dealership. i'm extremely upset at the situation and how unreliable my car has become bc even after diagnosis and repairs i will be nervous. not to mention how terrible this could've been had i have been on a busy road with my children in the car.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while the contact's spouse was driving at a slow speed and making a right turn, the power steering failed. the power steering assist warning indicator illuminated and the steering became very difficult to operate. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact was skeptical of having the dealer diagnose the vehicle. the contact was concerned that a previous vehicle failure was mis-diagnosed by the dealer. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v514000 (steering). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 48,000.

I am speaking in behalf of my wife [xxx] who is the regular user of the said car. my name is [xxx] the husband of [xxx]. on friday, march 10, 2017, my wife called me from her work that she said there's something wrong with the said car. she said that she almost caused an accident when she was making a turn on a signal light crossing that when the steering wheel suddenly became stiff (tough) to maneuver. she panicked what to do and she stopped suddenly in that busy crossing that other driver were confused that they have sudden stop as well ,but, fortunately no one was committed accident. my wife said, for a minutes after, she managed to moved the car and drove back to her work parking area as she struggled to steer the car. i went to check the car and it says in the dash board " steering assist fault .. service required. this is the scenario, the car is safety hazard to drive. my wife develop a nervous breakdown what she had experience very badly on that incident . she does not want to drive the car no more for the anxiety that might cause an accident if that things happened again while she is driving in the freeway... of which most of the time she's in the freeway going to work and back home. indeed, when i test drove the car, i cant believe it myself that almost you can not move the steering wheel. please investigate this matter and have the car inspected by your department to evaluate the defect of the car that is a safety hazard to drive when that " electric power steering assist " shut down. appreciated for your concern for public safety. the car is parked right now in front of my residence. your inspector can come anytime to do the inspection. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while driving approximately 45 mph, the power steering suddenly failed and caused the steering wheel to become extremely difficult to turn. the cause of the failure was not diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v514000(steering). the contact stated that the vehicle experienced the same failure listed in the recall. the failure mileage was 47,000.

After driving about 10 minutes, i thought i heard a grinding noise after stopping at a stoplight on a major four lane road in rush hour traffic. when i started turning left onto a windy two lane highway, i initially didn't hear a grinding noise, and then distinctly heard it as i completed the turn. the steering wheel became very loose, then suddenly extremely tight and very difficult to turn left or right on the road placing me in a life threatening situation. i immediately attempted to call the dealership by my house and was unable to reach them. after calling the ford dealership who last serviced my vehicle, i was advised to bring the car in immediately and be extremely careful while driving. he stated there may be an extended warranty covering repair. i drove the car to the dealership by my house who informed me of the door latch recall as well. after being told the next day the power steering rack/gearbox was defective and it would be $1800 to repair, i called ford customer service who was of no service. i received a call from a ford regional manager offering for me to pay a portion of the cost. i declined and requested speaking with their supervisor based on this being a problem ford is aware of and has yet to reconcile. furthermore, ford placed responsibility on the dealership to make an offer for repair when this is a manufacturer issue. the dealership has been the only reasonable and understanding entity to date. i bought this car brand new to get me to and from work, and eventually give to my 17 daughter. i'm active duty military and appalled ford has the audacity to not repair a life threatening issue. although i have the strength to steer the vehicle on a two lane, winding road, my daughter would not! *tr

Steering completely failed twice, once in traffic. this posed a significant safety risk to the general public and the vehicle. failure caused significant contact with curb on roadside. speed was app. 35 mph. occurred on highway 100 in milwaukee county, wi. second failure happened shortly after ford dealer reprogramed steering system due to intermittent steering failures. during this instance steering failed when car was started (this happened just prior to the most significant issue which was the steering failure in traffic). car was less than 1,000 miles out of warranty thus causing significant out of pocket repairs costs.

After going through a bump on a residential street at 30 mph the steering became very difficult to control the car. i was less than one mile from home and managed with great difficulty to make it to my home. complete steering failure, there is no way to drive the car. very glad it was me driving and not my daughter as this happened in a curve. the car has 43,000 miles on it. over 600 complaints about this electronic power steering system and since it is out of warranty the repairs are expected to be at least $2,000. what is nhtsa doing about this problem. it is pretty obvious to me there is a problem and an emergency recall needs to be issued. ford and it's local dealers are unwilling to address the problem. what's going to take nhtsa! to get this problem fixed.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while turning at a traffic light, the contact's vehicle stalled and caused a front end collision with another vehicle. the air bags did not deploy. the contact sustained minor injuries, which did not require medical attention. a police report was filed. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the clutch and the tie rod needed to be replaced. prior to the crash, the clutch was replaced five times. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 13,000.

Following my low tire pressure indicator coming on, i noticed the power steering issue as i was pulling into a parking spot, and my steering wheel made a squeaking or whining sound. later, while driving on a city street, as i began to make a turn, my steering wheel started hesitating, and making a gear stripping noise; the steering column locked up and when i tried to turn the wheel it made a loud squeaking sound. also, my transmission shutters whenever i accelerate and slow down. the transmission issue was initially repaired via a software update before the warranty expired, but it has since started to malfunction again.

Warning light came on stating "steering assist fault". . we lost all power steering while driving the car. we were able to get the car into a rest area off the highway. we had no power steering and it made it very difficult to operate the car. the steering gear needed to be replaced at 36,900 miles at a cost of $2,121.74. ford customer service was no help at all to me. they were suppose to return calls within 4 hours and it took me 10 days until i was able to get a call back.there currently is no recall but 900 miles past warranty i would not expect this to happen.

Power steering failure and hesitation, shuddering in transmission. reported on 6/17/16 for previous failure incident on 5/13/16. dealer had repaired vehicle under warranty bur repairs failed to work . new incident that occurred on 6/14/16. internet search indicated class action lawsuits have been filed against ford for both the steering problem and transmission problem, nhtsb appears to have already opened an investigation. still waiting for repairs to be made.

Car reports steering assist fault, service required sometimes at startup, sometimes while in motion, resulting in loss of power steering. restarting the car results in normal operation for a time, sometimes a day sometimes weeks. no obd2 code present.

Bought a 2014 ford focus 1/17/16and 6 months after owning it, the vehicle shuddered when taking off at a green light, had lost power around corners. got a recall notice june 2016 got a new clutch and transmission power train. january 2017 problem persisted brought it back to the dealer they said its over 60,000 warranty and have to pay cash for the transmission repair . could not drive the car safely it would not shift. brought it back without recall notice june 20, 2017, and the dealer said they will file a 360 on repair of the clutch. waiting for the dealer to call now 6/21/17 . i need a reliable car for work and my family and can not drive this car. so scared driving it 3/4 close calls and rear ends. it sits as i pay for it every month.

Even after several repair attempts by ford when turning the steering cracks and pops loudly, it sounds like something is about to break. this vehicle also has had 4 clutch assemblies installed and has a creaking sound in the drivers side door that (according to the dealer) is because there is a bad weld in a "support" column located behind the front fender.

On 5/13/16 power assisted steering failed. vehicle very difficult to steer. vehicle was towed to auto dealer. also transmission shuddering, choking etc.no accident or damage occurred because of these at that time but elevated risk of an accident. repairs for both made by dealer under warranty.

My vehicle has had numerous transmission problems, going into reverse while driving, shutting off while driving, etc. recently, the power steering completely went out and reverted to manual steering. today, while driving it for a while, i noticed a burning smell and pulled over. under the hood, the fuse box had caught fire, but was blown out by the wind when i opened the hood. 20,500 miles.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. the contact stated that while getting the vehicle serviced, the technician informed that the steering gear failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v514000 (steering). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 52,617.

While turning at a light, my steering went out and caused me to veer into oncoming traffic in the opposing lane. it now takes great effort and muscle to make and turns in the vehicle. i have had the vehicle in the shop numerous times due to a faulty transmission. now when i turn on the vehicle, the instrument panel displays that there is an urgent transmission fault, then it will flash that there is an urgent steering assist fault. while running a vehicle health report, the vehicle states that the transmission is at a "reduced power state" which causes it to hesitate, not change gears, and not be able to accelerate properly - all of which ford says are "characteristics of this transmission." also, the transmission does not work at all in sport mode and has went into reverse or park grinding to a screeching halt while driving on a highway. luckily, i did not crash when the steering suddenly went out. my vehicle is currently in a lemon law dispute, therefore, ford will not further diagnose my vehicle.

The vehicle a 2014 ford focus s model was moving at a high rate of speed going down the highway when it stalled out due to the wiring splices going bad causing the vehicle to stall out and stop without warning

Yesterday i stopped in a parking lot when all of a sudden my steering seemed to go out as if my engine had stalled (didn't). it resumed normal operation until today when i entered a roundabout when the steering started to lose the power feature if only for a few moments. i consulted a ford dealer and saw no recalls on this problem. i am having the car checked on 3/14/16 for my transmission shudder and will attempt to get this looked at then. it is troubling to know that this may happen at high speed. in the roundabout i seemed to have a manual steering feature, but as i stated the roundabout speed was about 15 mph.

Heard noise in steering and tires took car to be checked out was nothing wrong that is how it sounds and drives. this was 2 months after getting the car. in march 2016 turning a curve car steering got hard and locked up hit curve busted axlle and steering component. replaced axle thought that was all. then had car taken to ford i was then informed of $3000.00 in damages and labor to fix it. i did not proceed to getting fixed . the service manager proceeded to throw the keys at me and got pissed because i wouldn't get car fixed right then.i found out about the issues on the internet looking into the car parts and any issues with the car. the car was in motion.
