We have classified the 135 complaints from 2014 Ford Focus about STEERING into the following categories.
While driving the vehicle, the steering became almost impossible to turn cause me to hit a curb in a city and then a light came on the dash saying power steering failure. the steering is very hard and sticks then release. unsafe to drive. scared to ever drive this vehicle again.
Without ant kind of warning in went into the store for 10 min got into the car and the steering wheel was upside down i turned the car on and no power steering and and power assist code came up
Power steering failure. car loses power steering in the middle of driving.
Sometimes when i'm backing up, the power steering quits and i can't turn the wheel, which can result in a crash. i have to turn the car off and back on again, one or more times before it will work. so, while i have no power steering, i'm in the middle of road, blocking traffic, and hoping i don't get hit from another vehicle. this is a serious issue.!
My 16 year old daughter was driving in her 2014 ford focus se on the interstate. i was a passenger as she only has her learners permit. all the sudden she complained the vehicle was hard to steer. i saw her having a physically hard time steering the vehicle. i looked at the dashboard and saw the power steering assist failure indicator icon (electronic power assist steering - epas)activated on the dashboard. my daughter continued to struggle to maintain the vehicle safely due to the power steering issue. she drove to the nearest exit which was even worse than the highway. she had trouble steering through the "s" turns on the exit ramp. she came to the intersection, luckily the light was green and she didn't have to stop to turn right, but it wasn't much help. while turning onto another two lane highway she almost hit the concrete medium due to the epas failure. watching her drive the vehicle reminded me when i drove my grandfathers old dodge dart; no power steering. i understand
Driving the car and lost all control of steering without any notice while turing to cross busy street. code says power steering fault
'power steering assist fault' came up a few weeks ago. i shut it off and turned it back on and it cleared. went to start it up today and the fault was on as i pulled out of the garage. stayed on stopping and starting 5 times. also drove it and was very difficult to steer. this will be a safety issue for my 16 year old daughter who is supposed to drive this car.
52,000 miles - 2014 ford focus manual - while running errands, during car startup the error message "power assist malfunction - service required." the power steering was deactivated and made very difficult to steer. turned the car off and restarted after 5 min. the error message disappeared and power steering came back. from others with similar issues, this error could occur while driving and seems to be costly repair for a low mileage vehicle.
Impared steering/grinding noise when turning stationary or in motion, temporary loss of steering control, increasing risk of crash and poses an unreasonable risk to my safety. please see nhtsa # 14v514000 ford recall # 14s18 .
Steering wheel locks up after starting car and also while driving at low speeds
Power steering failed while driving. nearly caused an accident. lucky there were no others on the road. ford dealership said rack and pinion needed replacing. 2 weeks later the transmission completely failed. had already been re-programmed as part of the 14m02 program. this didn't fix the juddering and poor gear performance. dealer says transmission is broken and none of the customer programs apply.
'tamara recall'. recently the first week of july 2019 i left work and noticed i cohsot turn my steering wheel. i called red hill ford and i spoke to one of the new guys and explained to them my power steering was going and it was making grinding noises. they actually told me to drive my car down to the dealership with what i told them. he told me it wasn't my power steering and that it could be something else but i knew since my car was hard to steer and the grinding noise it was making. i drove from allentown down to red hill on route 29 and it was a long ride there. second, because they told me it cost 2 grand which i didn't have they were going to have me pick it up and drive it again knowing how it was not drive-able. luckily my parents came through and paid it. seeing the recalls i never received anything about my power steering rack. shouldn't this been covered under a warranty or covered since there was a recall? there is no warning light that displays on the dashboard for the power steering and this is dangerous not knowing when your power steering rack is going. please get back to me and if this should have been covered per the recall. i could have be badly hurt and or hit another car!!
I purchased this ford w 15000 miles on it. it now has 37000 miles. i feel like the car is a lemon. i have had several issues requiring me to go ford dealership. first the gas information was incorrect. it said i had 26 miles to drive but ran out of gas. then when i was driving on the freeway the car got stuck in between gears. i could not accelerate. then the i tried to back out of a parking spot and the i could not put car into reverse. as a result car was fixed under warranty and recall. the items fixed were gas tank recall, engine mount, clutch, transmission, and (reservoir tank that was not covered under warranty). i picked up car and next day i drove to work with the same issues. gears are not shifting. take bake to dealer and fixed transmission module. now the power steering does not work. i took it to ford and they charged me 160$ to look at it. it will cost 1800$ to fix steering. this not covered under warranty. the dealer also said that the suspension needs to be replaced soon. he stated that suspension needs to be replace at 50000 miles my car only has 37000 miles. i have never replaced suspension in any other car. it makes no's sense why this car is falling apart with 37000 miles on it. it's a lemon and i want my money back. i bought this car for my daughter and it is not safe to drive!
Yesterday i noticed that my steering seemed a little hard to keep going straight. today when i got in and started driving my car flashed a "steering failure get checked" message and was even harder to drive. i made it to my appointment and when i left 30 minutes later and turned my car on i had a new message, "steering loss stop safely". now i can't even move my steering wheel. luckily i wasn't on the expressway going 70 mph when this happened.
My son and i stopped at a rest area on a road trip. when my son started the engine to continue the trip he received the error code "steering assist fault, service now". we went to the nearest ford dealership who said they wouldn't be able to look at the car for a couple of days and if i was comfortable driving without power steering it wouldn't hurt anything else. since my 1st car didn't have power steering i decided to give it a go. when we reached our final destination we took the vehicle to a ford dealer and was told it needed to have the rack and pinion replaced at a cost of $2,400. this seems to be a recurring theme with the ford focus. i can only imagine what would have happened if this would have occurred while my son was driving at 65 mph on the new jersey turnpike.
When turning left or right it would make a grinding noise at all speeds on backroads or highway speeds. also, when going straight it was difficult to maintain a straight path and takes resistance. when i took it to the ford dealership they stated it was an electrical issue in the computer for the steering system causing it to malfunction.
The power steering system failure light appeared and no ability to steer the vehicle what so ever since it is electric power steering. my daughter almost crashed into another car while going straight. was lucky enough to be able to pull into a parking lot. absolutely no ability to turn the wheel with out breaking it off the steering column. also had temporary failure when the wintewr temps went well below freezing bur eventually the steering would come back online once the car warmed up (up to 45 minutes). very dangerous!!!
Power steering went out making it difficult to steer. it happened last night randomly. we drove our ford focus to a friends house, turned it off, hung out with them, and when we turned the car back on, it said we needed to get the steering serviced. it's very hard to steer and make turns at low mph
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while driving 30 mph, the power steering failed and "steering failed pull over" appeared on the instrument panel. the contact pulled the vehicle over to regain control of the vehicle. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified. the failure mileage was 64,000.
Two different incidents: (3/13/18) while driving, the power steering went out and the light came on "steering assist fault - service required". after that, pulled over and turned off the vehicle and waited a few minutes before turning back on. after restarting, the steering worked okay again. had this later checked by astoria ford, and they could not find anything wrong (even after running the codes). then on 3/15/19, got in the vehicle and started it and the light came on again. this time even after stopping and re-starting the engine (waiting @ 5-10 minutes) the light remained on and there was no steering. currently, the vehicle is at a astoria aamco getting checked thoroughly by a very competent, highly experienced mechanic to get this resolved for our safety.
Power steering stopped working. message "steering assist fault service required" pops up after car is started.
Three separate incidents. all three incidents happened while first starting vehicle, putting vehicle in reverse, and then the steering wheel locks up and a steering assist failure warning comes on. steering wheel will not move. had to pull back in to parking spot and turn car off. upon turning the vehicle back on, the steering wheel is back to normal and the warning is gone. terrible vehicle. feel unsafe driving my child in it. never will buy another ford ever again.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while the contact's daughter was driving 50 mph, the power steering warning indicator illuminated and an audible tone was heard. also, the power steering became inoperable and it was difficult to maneuver the vehicle. the vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed. morrie's minnetonka ford (located at 13400 wayzata blvd, minnetonka, mn 55305, (952) 546-5441) was made aware of the failure. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 32,000. the vin was not available.
While driving on the highway to dinner, a message pops up and states, "steering fault, service soon". during this time, it became a little difficult to move the vehicle around on the road. i managed to make it to dinner. concerned, i wanted to take it to the dealership. when i started the car that evening (1/8/2019) a new message popped up. it stated; "steering loss stop safely". the steering wheel was essentially locked in its position and hard to move around. i got it to the ford dealership and they told me it would cost $1,931.35 to fix. this includes about $1,200 for the steering gear (electrical), about $605 for the labor, and another $100 for a new alignment. are you kidding me? this is a 2014 with only 55k on it. there is no reason the manufacture shouldn't be covering this. there was another car in for the same issue as mine. looking online, i heard that this is a common problem with the ford focus that is seems like hasn't hit that "magical" number to be made a recall. this is my first and now last ford i will ever buy.
Received notice stating 'steering assist fault, service now' while driving on the highway. turned car off and then back on on the side of highway and received message stating, 'steering loss, stop safely.' all within 5-10 minutes of each other. almost wrecked multiple times trying to get my car to safety.
Power steering rack noise backing car up steering car or just driving had to have car towed to repair shop
Transmission gave out while driving on the highway. had towed to dealership, who repaired with the same parts. the vehicle repair was completed and broke down with the same issue after driving 50 ft. until today, the transmission is unpredictable and unsafe, and now the power steering assist went out, luckily i just got off the highway and back to work when this occurred. i've seem numerous reports on both of these issues, and ford wants $2500 to repair the steering, and says they cannot check the transmission until then. they also indicated that they aren't sure if the transmission would be repaired again, and it would depend on how 'bad' it is. this is a completely unsafe vehicle, which i am still paying for, and is unusable at this time, unless i decide to drive it in unsafe conditions. ford is not concerned about their customers or safety.
Driving and vehicle completely shutdown after a loud crunching noise coming from the front of car. a bunch of codes flashed across the dash . vehicle wouldn't start. had to tow it home. the transmission light stays on now when i turn key on.
While on a road trip, the car was functioning normally when i stopped and turned off the ignition at a gas station to get fuel. when i restarted the car, the power steering did not function and i had a notification on the dash stating this as well. this vehicle only has 39,900 miles and i have been quoted a repair cost of ~$3,000.
Was driving i10 to visit my mom in milton fl when suddenly i could not steer the car...the power assist failure light came on. had to manhandle the car the remaining 120 miles where i left it sit for a day and had to drive it back to jacksonville fl because the one place in that area - pensacola - that could fix it would not be able to until tues. and i had to be to work mon. steering assist was off and on. mostly off, my entire drive home. we were able to get it back to the dealer where we bought it - brand new in 2014 - on mon. and it was fixed tues. $3004.96 later...
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. the contact called on behalf of the driver. while driving at an unknown speed, the steering wheel seized and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was able to be coasted to the side of the road and was towed to a tow lot. the vehicle was later taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the steering computer system failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that no recall was associated with the vin. the approximate failure mileage was 51,000. the vin was not available.
On 8/24/2018 i pulled into a gas station and filled the car up. as i was leaving i heard a grinding noise as i turned the steering wheel. i had never heard any noise from turning before. as i drove home 4.7 miles there were no turns, but the road does wind a little bit. as i was driving i noticed the steering felt a little "loose" and a little unresponsive. there were no lights or warning so i continued home where i would look at it. where the road curved i could hear a grinding sound as turned the steering wheel. no sound was heard while driving straight. when i got to my block i made a right hand turn and the grinding noise was very pronounced. when i turned left onto my street the noise was just as pronounced. when in my driveway i turned the wheel while parked and the grinding sound was at the same level. i turned the engine off and turned the steering wheel right and left and the grinding noise was the same as when the engine was running. a couple of days later i read about the possibility of it being a steering assist fault. i started the car and checked for warnings and lights and there were none. i turned the steering wheel and got the same grinding noise. the next day i jacked the car up to visually inspect the steering linkage and cv axle. no play in the cv, nothing visibly broken in the steering. i tried turning the wheel with the car on the jack stands and now the steering wheel would not move at all. i removed the stands and tried again to turn the steering wheel left and right, it would not turn either direction.
Purched vehicle march 6th 2015.got the extended warrenty since then the transmission was fixed 3 times and now the electronic assist steering went out while pulling in my drive making me hit mailbox and make dent in hood of car.called 3 different dealers and all 3 said sorry that's not on recall even thou the same steering is used on other ford vehicles and are on recall.my warrenty oz up and can not afford to fix transmission and steering.the transmission was moved out to a 5 year 10k mile warrenty.like i said they fixed under warrenty 3 times.this car is a lemon and i have no choice but to send it back and hopefully not be charged for the car.
On my way home towards the end of august and beginning of september 2018 the power steering in my car started to go out and i was safely able to drive my car to a location near an intersection before the power steering went out completely
Power steering failure, the power steering locked up one day when i went to the store,i started the car& the power steering was locked and extremly hard to steer, i finally drove it home which was about 15 miles, i had to drive very slow because it was very hard to steer, the car was parked in a store parking lot and when i returned to the car it was very heavy to turn the wheel i was afraid to drive it home but i didnt want to leave it overnight in a store parking lot...
While driving in the parking lot, the car (2014 ford focus 5dr hb) suddenly loss power. unfortunately, the recall only apply to the electric model. makes/models/model years: ford/focus electric/2012-2014 mfr's report date: october 28, 2013 nhtsa campaign number: 13v-523 components: power train:automatic transmission:control module (tcm, pcm) potential number of units affected: 2,456
After driving for 2 hours at highway speed, 90+ degrees ambient, i stopped the car to discharge a passenger. when i restarted the car, the power assist had failed. i was able to park the car with considerable manual effort. 2 hours later i started the car and the power assist steering worked normally. after about a month there have been no recurrences. when i reported the problem to my dealer the service rep wanted to charge me $100 to read the diagnostic computer.
I was driving down a state road about 100 yards away from the road i live on. i turned my turn signal on and began slowing down. when i was able to turn i began pressing the accelerator to turn, upon doing so my steering locked up. i lost my power steering and wasn't able to turn. a car was approaching and had to stop to prevent from hitting my on my passenger side. i have no clue why there hasn't been a recall after researching this defect. there are so many people that have been in crashes including deaths. i'm thankful no one was hurt in this situation but i cant imagine if my daughter would have been driving as we purchased this car for her. i pray you look into this and issue a recall.
At 42000 miles my car developed some noise with the steering. there was rubbing noise coming from behind the steering wheel whenever i was turning at low speeds such as when i'm pulling in or out of parking. when i took the car to a ford dealership, i was told the noise was coming from the steering rack and it would need to be replaced. i'm aware there's a recall 14s18 that addresses this issue, but my car isn't covered because it wasn't manufactured at the date that affects that recall, so i'm asking for recall 14s18 to be expanded to include vehicles built at the same time as mine.
Steering failed while driving home from work on the i 4 a road where the speed limit varies from 65 to 70 miles an hour. not a great time to not be able to control of your car made it home but the car is to difficult to drive. and now i find out ford knew this was issue since 2013!.
Steering assist message came on during engine star ,vehicle was almost impossible to turn steer out of parking lot .car has only 73000 miles . dealer repaired at owner cost of over $2100 .complete steering mechanism needed to be replaced .
I was driving home from work on a city street and i got a warning light that said "power steering assist fault" and i suddenly lost my power steering. i was able to get home but i am obviously concerned. while doing an internet search on the problem i found a site with many complaints and they said there was a recall on 2013 ford focus models for the same problem, so this has been an ongoing issue with ford.
Power steering failure. needs total replacement. vehicle only has 46,000 miles. i was lucky i was not driving it, when it went out. i am guessing the temp that day had something to do with it. temp was 85 that day.
My seatbelt hardly ever buckles. i've had to jam it a few times in order for it to finally click. my stairwell has never been aligned with my tires, and my brakes were always janky
I parked vehicle in parking lot of store. i returned to car, started the engine, put car in reverse, gave it a little gas while i tried to turn the steering but it would not move. message flashed 'steering wheel assist error'. car now has to be towed to dealership for a repair that is not covered by ford. lucky the steering did not go out while i was driving.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. the contact stated that the warning indicator flashed "power steering loss" and the steering wheel seized. the vehicle was taken to the dealer (echelon ford, 4 s white horse pike, stratford, nj 08084, 1-(856) 627-8400) where it was diagnosed that the steering motor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer issued 95 tsbs for the steering and one steering recall. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 82,000. *tt
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. while driving approximately 55 mph, the steering wheel seized and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to frank myers auto maxx (4200 patterson ave, winston-salem, nc 27105, (336) 767-3482) where it was diagnosed that the power steering failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer informed the contact that the vin was not included in any recalls and referred the contact to nhtsa. the approximate failure mileage was 75,000. the vin was not available.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford focus. the contact stated that the gear shift selector was placed in reverse however, the vehicle failed to respond. the transmission warning light was illuminated. the vehicle was taken to norris ford dealer, (901 merritt blvd, baltimore, md 21222, (410) 285-0200) and was diagnosed. the contact was informed that the steering rack needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact stated that the transmission was replaced previously, however the failure recurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not assist and referred the contact to nhtsa. the failure mileage was 96,000.
I was driving in the #1 lane in moderate traffic on the freeway, going about 40 mph, moving straight ahead, and slightly accelerating. an alert showed up on my dash screen stating that there was an issue with steering assist. as i pulled off the freeway, i noticed that it was significantly more difficult to turn my steering wheel, and as i took a right turn at the freeway exit, it was almost impossible to turn. i had the vehicle towed to a mechanic who recommended that i have it taken to the dealership, as he believed it fell under the same steering issue that many other ford models have lately been recalled for. the dealership confirmed that the steering gear will need to be replaced, at full cost to me because the focus does not fall under these recalls. ford must issue a recall for the focus models in addition to those that have already been recalled. i am not the only focus owner to experience this terrifying issue, which could have easily caused an accident had my steering assist gone out in a slightly different situation. this is a life threatening fault and focus owners need to be aware that the vehicles they are driving are dangerous.
Went to autozone for power steering fluid. they asked year make model said it doesn't require it. i left an on my way out steering locked. praise the lord no one way hurt.
