We have classified the 793 complaints from 2013 Ford Focus about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
Transmission jerks.,hesitates,slips revs up,stalls out,module for transmission reprogrammed,replaced,clutches replaced,still same problem.they cannot repair,will sit parked in driveway.
I was driving down the highway at about 60mph and the hood flew open shattering the window.the latch that was holding it down came loose and one side was not attached to anything. the top of the car was also dented. i had a windshield guy come to repair it and he said that this is the third ford car that he has seen this happen to. also i have two previous recalls on the car one for the passenger door latch and the other for the transmission control module. the hood coming up is a huge safety concern and could have caused a major accident. also the hood is banged up so now that it will not close normal. and the hood joints cut the frame of the car. *tr
Car has stalled while driving now 5 times in 9 days. the first time driving from denver to casper, i wasn't too far from home the steering assist service needed warning came on, and about 5 miles later i received a transmission service required warning, immediately followed by an engine service now warning and i completely lost power. in trying to restart the vehicle, i had all my lights and everything (including warnings), but no crank. when a nice person asked to push me to the shoulder at least out of the turn lane while waiting for a tow truck. the car started right up. towed the car still to a ford dealership, where i was told nothing was found and they couldn't replicate the problem. 7 days later. and about 250 miles from home on the interstate. the same thing happened. the car started about an hour later after the tow truck driver arrived to help. was able to drive the car home, and again the following day the fold dealership told me just communication codes on the computer and unsure what the issue is. today, the car did the same thing 3 more times in the span of 2 hours. once i was stopping in the right through lane at a stop light with my daughter in the car when it stalled out. noticed this time even though i had the car in park the dash read it was in drive. had the ecm on the transmission replaced already in september. right now it is back a the dealership as i do not trust this car with me in it, let alone my 2 little girls. *tr
While driving down the highway the vehicle transmission down shifted when it should have up shifted, rpms were in 4500-5000. could not get to speed limit of 45 mph. check engine light come on and we stopped to have it checked but store was not open. put car in reverse and car would not move when given gas, only coasted back due to slope. had to drive car in this condition another 8 miles on major highways before we reached our destination. check engine light remained on.
Vehicle jerks and shudders on acceleration from stops. vehicle also hesitates and lacks power at times. it also overhears and leaks coolant.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving 65 mph, the vehicle shifted independently to a lower gear without warning. on several occasions, the vehicle failed to shift out of second gear while the accelerator was depressed. the vehicle was taken to be diagnosed. the contact was informed that the pcm needed to be reprogrammed. the pcm was reprogrammed; however, the failure recurred. the contact also stated that the clutch was replaced, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 18,209. updated 01/31/2017*ct *cn
My 2013 ford focus shudders, hesitates and surges when shifting. today it is in ford's dealership getting the fifth auto trans dual clutch installed. i do not feel safe when accelerating from a stop sign. yesterday the car shifted hard 1-2 and again shifted hard 2-3 and then would not come out of 3rd gear.
Erratic and unpredictable behavior from transmission. sometimes takes off quick and sometimes slow all with the same input. shudders and searches for gears especially on hills and in turns resulting in loss of control. most recently it had not been able to find a gear and not be able to make it uphill and had to back down a busy street to the bottom of the hill and get a running start to make it up. ford has repeatedly attempted to repair the problem but have been unable to do so. the car is unpredictable and unsafe.
Was driving down the road and suddenly transmission stops working engine revs up then it engages again. continued down the road and it continued to do this repeatedly. pulled off road only to find out no reverse as well. almost caused me to lose control of the vehicle as i live in a rural area with small rolling hills and it is wintertime. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving approximately 65 mph, the service transmission warning indicator illuminated. the dealer diagnosed that the part that held the clutch to the transmission fractured and needed replacement. the contact also stated that the vehicle was previously repaired twice for power train failures. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 68,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact stated that there was an abnormal noise progressing from the transmission and that the gears were difficult to shift and change over. the failure began after a dealer's repair for a manufacturer recall to service the transmission. the contact was included in two manufacturer service campaigns, but was not notified of the transmission clutch shudder / transmission input shaft seal campaign extension and the transmission control module extended campaign coverage. the manufacturer was contacted to determine when they may be able to address the two service campaigns pertaining to the transmission failure. the recall information was not provided. the failure mileage was not available.
Vehicle is equipped with the dps6 powershift dual clutch transmission. vehicle was purchased used from ford dealership in december of 2016 with about 44,000 miles on the odometer. several months after purchase it started exhibiting some minor shuddering when accelerating from a stop. over time this shuddering became quite severe and would sometimes even appear when already up to speed driving down the road at a steady pace or when accelerating to pass another vehicle etc. it also exhibited some grinding noises as well when accelerating. eventually this shuddering became so severe it was un-bearable and at approximately 67,000 mileswe brought the car back to the ford dealership for diagnosis. it was determined that defective seals on the input shaft of the transmission had caused the dct gearbox oil to contaminate the linings of the clutch assembly. the remedy was to replace these seals and the clutch assembly with updated items. this repair was completed at a cost to us of just under $1600.00
The fuse that controls the instrument panel in front of the steering wheel will not stay in. it does not "blow" and when this happens you have no speedometer, heat or gas gauge, turn signals, ect. i believe this to be a valid safety issue. when this fuse does not allow the current to get to the instrument cluster then the mpg readout returns to 30.7 in lieu of what was being shown at the time of the failure. anytime your signal lights will not work that is a recallable situation. i believ fomoco knows about this. also the sticker on the door jamb in regards to tire pressure reads 30 psi. right now i have 30 psi in my tires and the "low tire" light is constantly on.when i contacted my dealer he said to put 35 psi in each tire to eliminate the problem. if the tire manufacturers wanted more than 30psi in their tires then why does the door sticker not say so and also the tire booklet.
Vehicle hesitates to go after coming to a stop. it jerks shudders and doesn't feel like it has enough power to move the vehicle after it stops.
This vehicle has had major problems with the powershift transmission. over the course of 107000 miles the vehicle has exhibited shudding, lurching and bad shift characteristic and frankly is extremely dangerous. it has had it's clutches cleaned at 37736 miles in oct 2014, replaced at 38396 miles in december 2014, replaced again at 75874 in february 2016 and now in january 2017 at 107,xxx the clutches again need to be replaced. ford is now longer willing to cover the cost even though the vehicle has consistently had issues. this is a major defect and clearly the parts being used are not up to the task. when the clutching start to fail, the car lurches, shudder on acceleration, shift abnormally and has a delayed acceleration which can lead to very dangerous situations. i was recently rear ended while making a left hand turn because the vehicle would not accelerate when i pushed on the pedal (although it doesn't excuse the driver behind me carelessness).
Vehicle does not start with warning parking aid fault. after several attempts, it starts but then stops. vehicle shudders from start, gears make noises and down shifts unexpectedly.
I purchased a 2013 ford focus 2013 se hatchback. i've had it for about two years. during the last few months the transmission has started to stutter. when starting at an intersection from a red light or stop sign the car struggles to accelerate. at slow speed in a parking lot for example it doesn't operate well wither. it behaves like someone is learning a manual transmission for the first time. my car is an automatic. lately the automatic transmission has gotten worse. i have had to take it in to the dealer.
I was literally leaving the ford dealership for "shut down isssues and shuddering issues" when they supposedly couldn't "verify the problem" i was driving home on a five lane highway and my car completely lost power in the middle of an intersection going 70mph and was stuck in the middle of the freeway until a tow truck came and towed my car back to the dealership where it is currently at right now. this is my 5th attempt for them to fix it. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while stopping at a yield sign, the vehicle lost acceleration. the contact had to maneuver to the side of the road. there were no warning indicators illuminated. when the contact turned off and restarted the vehicle, it accelerated. the vehicle was driven to the contact's residence. the dealer stated that the clutch plate needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired three times for the same failure. the manufacturer was notified. the vehicle was repaired. the vin was unknown. the approximate failure mileage was 75,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact stated that the transmission gears were extremely slow to change over and suddenly the gear engaged and caused a jerking motion. the emergency brake was released and fractured. the contact notified at least three dealers and one of them indicated that the transmission clutch assembly needed to be replaced; however, the part was on a national back order. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 37,000.
The powershift transmission contains one or more design and/or manufacturing defects that cause problems and unsafe conditions, including, but not limited to, suddenly lurching forward, delayed acceleration, and sudden loss of forward propulsion. the transmission has a very sluggish shift between the first and second gears and the upshift bogs down like the vehicle might stall and erratically shifting in second and third gear as well, continue to experience transmission defect, including, but not limited to, bucking, kicking, jerking, harsh engagement, and delayed acceleration and lurching. this is a serious matter that needs to be addressed before this defect causes fatalities.
At an intersection, the car sputters from a stop and sometimes stalls. likewise, after re-fueling the tank the car stalls 2-3 times in a row on ignition before starting and staying on. when approaching a stop, the car has sometimes had the other dashboard warning lights come up and felt like it was about to stall, with the rpm gauge bouncing around near zero, but has not fully stalled during deceleration (possibly due to me pressing on the accelerator to prevent the stall). the service engine soon light came on shortly after this began. at that time, the fuel gauge also began to "stick," not moving from position until the car would be stopped and restarted, and mis-representing the number of miles left before needing to refuel. i'm currently at a ford dealership to get inspected and repaired. i've been told that it has something to do with a pump, but nothing more at this point. *tr
Check engine light is constantly on and the engine leaks oil. the transmission does not change gears, shudders excessively and lacks power going uphill.
Vehicle engine/transmission shudders and lurches. often, not being reactive to depression of gas pedal. i have been left in the middle of an intersection multiple times with a car that will not go, but rather shudders and doesn't gain propulsion.
I have had nothing but problems with this car and have only owned it since july of 2014. the computer module in my transmission has already had to be replaced due to shuddering, gears shifting incorrectly, and eventually dying while driving. now my car is in the shop, again. this time for code p0456, which relates to the purge valve canister and evap system. a few weeks ago, i noticed my check engine light came on and had someone run my codes. whenever i put gas in the car, it takes several tries before my car will start. i have to pump the gas while starting the car in order for it to actually start. after i get gas, the car will sometimes die while i am driving...which has happened while i was driving on the highway in the middle of rush hour traffic. this will cause a major accident for someone some day...maybe even a fatal accident. the fuel gauge also started reading incorrectly at the same time. i will have a 1/4 tank of gas, but it will register that i have 3/4 full and is only momentarily corrected when you turn the car off and restart it. i have researched many blogs and forums and have discovered that many focus owners are having the same exact problems with these issues. my car is in the shop right now and i am waiting for them to call with the final diagnosis. it isn't right for ford to know that they have faulty cars out there and not pay to fix the problems. ford needs to recall this. *tr
For over a year now my car has randomly stopped going into reverse, shuttering while trying to shift, hard shifting (or slamming into gear), lurching and or jumping forward (or backwards), slipping out of gear, failing to engage in a gear, and also has slipped out of gear while on the highway/ freeway and almost caused an accident. my car has 82,000 miles on it and is still under warranty but ford refuses to say anything is wrong. they did replace a shift fork, but they claim that there is nothing wrong with my car. i get the transmission fault light and randomly a message about the transmission overheating will pop up and it tells me to pull over safely and wait 5 minutes. i am being charged (basically taxed) $500 a month to have a car that i cant trust to take me anywhere and i refuse to take my niece and nephew in it because it is so dangerous to operate when every time i get in it- it does these above things. i really wish that ford would step up and do the right thing because mine is not an isolated incident. but this disabled combat veteran doesn't see ford doing anything but counting all my money they keep taking.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving 35 mph, the vehicle jerked, lost power, and the clutch shuddered without warning. the vehicle was taken to russ milne ford (24777 hall rd, macomb, mi 48042, (586) 948-7700) where it was diagnosed that the transmission module failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the extended warranties for the power train had expired. the failure mileage was approximately 119,050.
I purchased this vehicle on august 12, 2016. i asked to see the carfax and it showed no previous problems whatsoever. the vehicle came with an extended warranty. i had no knowledge at this time there were any problems with this model or the dps6 transmission. when driving this vehicle to fayetteville, nc from my home in mt. airy, nc, i noticed a distinct shudder when the transmission shifted from gear go gear. i was concerned if this vehicle was going to get me to my destination and back home safely without some type of breakdown on the highway. fortunately, i was able to get home. i called the dealership, parkway ford in winston salem, nc and scheduled an appointment to have the problem evaluated. their diagnostic determined there was a problem with the clutch. the service consultant told me it was just a problem with the clutch needing adjustment which they would take care of. i later discovered that the clutch had been replaced. the service consultant assured me that this would solve the shuddering problem and there would be no future problems along these lines. as you will see from all of my submissions that this is just the first of many. i am represented by stern law of novi, michigan in my mass action suit against ford motor company
Car was in motion in rush hour highway traffic at speed of 55 mph when engine went to neutral revving and would not move. almost rear ended because of this. car would show drive on the lcd panel but be in park. you could not move the shifter either. i had just left (5 minutes) an authorized ford service dealer after having my car towed there from a previous occurrence and explained to the service people the exact issue as above but they said there was no issue and said my focus was fine well obviously it is not and my understanding is that this has been a common complaint for this engine. to be driving at highway speeds and your coming to a stop is very dangerous thankfully i or my family was not harmed just mentally shaken. please investigate this issue as it looks as if ford is ignoring the problem. thank you. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact stated that the vehicle experienced an unexpected downshift into neutral. the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission was defective; however, the remedy was not available due to the part being on a national back order. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was approximately 38,000. updated 01/11/2017*ct consumer stated car was purchased in 2012 and taken to dealer several times for transmission, felt like it was running over a wash board when accelerating from a stop. dealer stated there was nothing wrong. in 2/4/13 consumer had a head on crash. updated 6/22/18*jb
Tcm updated 3 times die to cel. 4th car wouldn't start or even engine turn over. towed to dealer, after 9 days new tcm placed in car. back at dealer for another 7 days. car driving sluggish and only getting 20mpg. ford dealer claims nothing wrong. car feels like a pickup truck.
I was driving on the highway going about 60mph when the car felt like it stopped accelerating. it felt as though the car was put in neutral. the car's prndl also began indicating that the car was in reverse when it was not. the car's screen then indicated that the transmission was faulty and needed to be serviced. i bought this car used from a dealership about two weeks ago.
The vehicle is short shifting and missing gears when at a stoplight. when the vehicle is hot, there are more issues. there is a lot of jerking and transmission shudders when taking off; feels like it doesn't want to go.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving approximately 10 to 35 mph, the vehicle lost power and would not accelerate when the accelerator pedal was depressed. in addition, the check engine light illuminated. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was driven to a mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission module and clutch sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the issue. the approximate failure mileage was 100,400.
Clutch in transmission was replaced 3 times by ford dealerships under the 36k mile warranty. car still has the same shuttering and jerking transmission while accelerating problem it originally had.
Since the first week of purchase the car has had trans failure. it has been in and out of the shop at least 4-5 times for repairs with no avail.. the transmission shudders, makes loud grinding noises, stalls, loses power then violently jerks when accelerating. because of this many times i have narrowly missed hitting other cars causing an accident. i drive everyday with fear and anxiety, this car is downright dangerous. to top things off, suddenly, my rear drivers side door will not stay shut,. it appears that the latch is broken even though i rarely if at all open or close this door. there are so many issues with this car. ford should be ashamed for this atrocity they brought upon their customers.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle suddenly lost power and would not accelerate. after shutting the vehicle off and restarting the engine, the vehicle operated normally. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission module was faulty. the transmission module was replaced, but the failure continued. the vehicle was towed back to the dealer who was unable to duplicate the failure and no failure was found. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 13,500.
I took my vehicle in for service at my local ford dealership due to the transmission shuddering and not accelerating while driving and informed my advisor the transmission is now slipping more often, unexpectedly and more severely and is becoming a real danger while acceleration. this is another instance of several that i have had to have the transmission recalibrated or clutch replaced. during this occasion, i was told the parts needed to be ordered and would be another 6-8 months before the transmission can be serviced and fixed due to having no parts. i don't want to put my 6 month old daughter in danger by driving the car and since the car. when asked for a loaner car until the parts come in i was told ford could not do that and my only remedy was to wait for the parts to come in. after escalating the issue to ford leadership through email, my transmission was serviced within the week. however the transmission still shudders and slips upon acceleration.
The powershift transmission is junk. this car has left my daughter on the side of the road several times. there is a class action lawsuit against ford for this problem. unfortunately it protects the first owner more than the used car owner. the care will not go into gear at all or only in first. the check engine light comes on for overheating. since we have had the car it has been in the shop 3 times and we have had the clutch replaced and the previous owner had the same thing happen, which we didn't know until we bought the car and it started having problems.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while the vehicle was merging into traffic, the vehicle failed to accelerate for approximately ten seconds. the vehicle was diagnosed and the transmission and power control module were replaced, but the failure continued. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
In february 2016 clutch tcm and seals were replaced in may 2016 vehicle started to act up again while merging onto highway vehicle rpm would go to 6k car would not move car intermittently stalls while in reverse backing this car will end getting someone hurt or killed on 7/5/16 trans overheat message popped up took to dealer mccarthy ford chicago they said it was safe to drive.
When the car shifts to first gear the car shudders, shakes and jerks after car moves from a stationary position. it has stopped while parked without warning. the check engine light is on all the time. have taken to local ford dealership to be fixed. same day had to return car because it stopped again. sensor dealing with transmission was checked and replaced. still same issues keep happening.
Nov 2015, excessive transmission shudder on take off. customer satisfaction program 14m01, 14m02. software update program 15b22. transmission control module electrical circuit failures (clutch replaced, tcm updated). june 2016, excessive transmission on take off, service engine light remained on, would not start-had to turn key several times before start. software update 15b22: customer satisfaction program 14m02, tcm replaced, tcm-pcm reprogram june 2016, unacceptable from ford corporation. i asked service department if tcm had revisions to to correct problem, they did not know. so if replacing with same defective tcm this will be an ongoing problem. was recommended to sell/trade car before 150.000 mile deadline on warranty. i have tried to trade in but no dealer wants because of known tcm ongoing problem. next failure i will have it repossessed and let ford corporate deal with it. very unsafe to drive in my opinion with this ongoing tcm problem. worst case scenario if tcm fails , vehicle will shut down completely and you have a ford road side assistance number to call. comforting ! unacceptable ford corporation. i do not to appreciate ford risking my families life for a problem they will not fix.
I have had this car for 2 years and it constantly shudders. each time i go to ford they do a "software" upgrade but it did not fix the problem. more recently my clutch went out and nearly killed someone when it jumped back into gear. they replaced the clutch but not the problem that caused it. so when does someone have to die for ford to recall the vehicle? it still shakes and shudders.
The 6-speed auto transmission, when accelerating the vehicle from a complete stop, the transmission components that the car is equipped with causes hesitation and shutter on take off. the electronic control module and the electronic clutch have both been replaced on recalls. the electronic clutch engages erratically, causing the car to shutter and larch forward as it engages. when changing oil in this car, the owner tried to drive the car up a ramp in l range on the gear shift , the engine would increase in rpm's but the clutch would not engage fully to allow the vehicle to go up the ramps, like it was in neutral. i had to check the the gear shift, thought it might have been in neutral, in wrong shift position. when explaining this to the service manager at our local dealership, we were told that the car can not go up a ramp, the transmission is designed for high speed take off. we were told that it is only intended to be lifted, never in my 58 years have i ever seen a car that would not go up a ramp, the ramp to me would only simulate going up a steep incline, which causes more concern with my 19 year old daughter driving this vehicle to and from college. ford keeps telling us that this car is operating like it is intended to, they acually gave us a print out how the car should feel and react. one comment read that the car feels like it is pulling a trailer, who wants a car that feels like it is constantly pulling a trailer? this vehicle has been in the shop eight to ten times, we get the same explanation each and every time now. it is working the way it is intended to, they say it does not shutter or larch on take off. numerous times my daughter has had someone with her that has experience the shutter and recently the car not going up the ramp without the cars engine racing and the clutch not engaging allowing the car to move forward. this car was purchased new,
Vehicle was parked. i went to turn on the car, and the steering wheel was locked and would not turn at all. had the car towed to the dealership. the service manager says the electric steering rack and pinion has failed and has to be replaced at a cost of 1,497.00. in addition, the car has also had numerous repairs to the transmission system. the car has had problems with the transmission since the very first day of purchase. the car will vigorously shudder at random times. the shuddering occurs every time i drive the car and it causes the car to violently jerk forward. we have taken the car in for all of the service updates/recalls, and the transmission problems still persist. the computer screen also will turn off randomly while driving. one time while driving on a highway, the car died. it was very dangerous. i should not have purchased this car.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while the contact's girlfriend was driving 30 mph, the vehicle shuddered and the gear shifter became stuck in second gear. in addition, the check engine indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to bailey ford of malone (11 state st, malone, ny 12953, (518) 483-5500) where it was diagnosed that the clutch needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 21866473. no further assistance was provided. the failure mileage was 70,000.
My vehicle uses the dps6 automatic transmission. i have had software updates applied twice, and the clutches replaced twice (may 2016, october 2018). i have also had the transmission control module replaced once (april 2017). all of this has been under an extended warranty, but i am concerned about the future, when the extended warranty runs out. at the moment, the transmission is behaving normally. after the last set of clutches were installed, i was instructed to "drive like a 16 year old". that is: to drive aggressively, to prevent the problem from happening again. doing so would mean i would be unable to achieve the mpg anywhere close to what the car was advertised as achieving. my answer to the "when did this happen?" question is the date of the first replacement of the clutches.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact stated that the vehicle hesitated when the accelerator pedal was depressed to come to a complete stop. the contact mentioned that the clutch was replaced four times in the past two years as well as the transmission computer. the vehicle was serviced at sunnyside motor co. inc. (944 main st, holden, ma 01520, (508) 829-4333). the dealer stated that the clutch was on an extended warranty; however, there were limits on whether it would be replaced based on rpms. the contact stated that a diagnostic appointment was scheduled with the dealer. the manufacturer was contacted. the failure mileage was 47,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to shift gears without warning. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was repaired; however, the diagnosis and repair were unknown. in addition, upon purchasing the vehicle, the tire pressure warning indicator illuminated. the technician stated that the indicator would eventually turn off; however, the contact mentioned that the indicator remained illuminated. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that an unknown chip needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 44,000.
