We have classified the 205 complaints from 2013 Ford Focus about STEERING into the following categories.
Car started shifting funny so i took it to the ford dealer they said something electronic on the transmission needed changed so they did something did not charge me for anything but it's still shifts differently they said it had to get used to the way i was driving one month later my steering unit went out i took it to the ford dealer they put it on the machine the the person i talk to on the phone said it needed a whole new steering column and it was $2,100 and at that time they would readjust the module on the steering for free i said no i did not have $2,100 so i had to pay the $99 to have it put on the machine and when i got the paperwork it said nothing about a steering column it only said i declined module programming and that cost was $125 had i paid the 125 i would not have paid that had to pay the 99 dollars but there is nothing on here about a steering column i do know this is difficult for me to prove what he said to me but there is nothing on this paper saying anything about a steering column i do feel that this was a gimmick on this model because they have had so many problems my transmission is still shifting funny
Power steering assist failure indicated on instrument panel and full loss of any steering assist. steering requires/required lots of muscle to maintain any form of active driver intended steering changes. resulted in no injury, but very frightening occurrence at highway speeds. will take vehicle to dealer in the morning, vehicle mileage is 90k. a quick internet search shows this is a common problem for 2013 ford focus, so why no recall?
Backing out of driveway, steering became very difficult, the power steering default light came on. this has happened twice in the past. my car has 80,000 miles on it. i am more than ticked off because this is not the only problem i have had with this car. last year it was my transmission computer that went out. there was a recall and it was repaired, but i am still having problems with the transmission performance. they say buy american made, but i will never buy another ford of any kind.
Power steering assist failure indicated on instrument panel and full loss of any steering assist. steering requires/required lots of muscle to maintain any form of active driver intended steering changes. it may fail at highway speeds of 70 or on vehicle startup. fortunately, we were able to maintain control of the vehicle and find a safe place to stop and fortunately reset the power assist without anyone being injured or killed. restarting vehicle reset the ps assist module for a few months but the system is now fully nonworking. the steering goes out whenever it desires. the vehicle is currently in the shop with a possible rack-and-pinion replacement or a steering column replacement once the problem is fully diagnosed. this will also require a vehicle alignment and possible computer reset and re-flash according to the shop. cost will be at least $2500. thanks ford for doing the right thing for your corporate structure and offloading your responsibility and cost for your poor engineering and design to the vehicle owner. poor engineering and lack of willingness to fix a problem is sure to gain you a loyal following. i am almost ashamed to say i am from the detroit area and have been a proponent of buying from the big three. i will upload the repair receipt once the repair action is completed.
I drove my car to pick my grandson up came parked car went to get back in it to leave steering assist failure flashed on and i had a hard time steering it at the ford dealership said the steering is all messed up and it's going to cost over 2000 to fix.ive had this car for 4 months and this makes the second time it's been in the garage. first time the key fell apart. now the steering is gone.
The power steering locked up while moving and will not turn at all.. this is very dangerous as it is locked in a straight forward position.. city street going thru light
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving 25 mph to the dealer for an oil change, the power steering failed and went into manual mode. the power steering failure warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the local dealer (causeway ford lincoln, 375 nj-72, manahawkin, nj, 08050) where it was diagnosed that the power steering rack failed and needed to be replaced. due to the cost, the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: cas-13195872. the manufacturer informed the contact that the part was not covered under warranty and that they would cover half of the cost. no additional assistance was provided. the failure mileage was approximately 54,000. *ln updated 7/23/18*jb
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while the vehicle was parked, the steering wheel became inoperable and the power steering assist indicator illuminated. the vehicle was towed to bolton ford (1500 e college street, lake charles, la 70607) where it was diagnosed that the steering gear failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 93,000.
Power steering failed while driving on the highway. very difficult to steer vehicle. took to dealership and they reported failed epas. appears to be a common problem with ford vehicles and has been recalled on certain models, but not the ford focus.
Couple weeks ago i got into my car to come to work and i could not turn the wheel. so i looked down and i saw "steering assist fault - service requested". until this day my fiance and i have adjusted our schedules temporarily so that he can drive me to work. i don't have the strength to even turn the wheel.
My steering wheel locked up while i was driving on a main road with me and my 7 year old in the car. i was guided to the side by the police and had to have vehicle towed to dealer. the dealer informed me that the rack and pinion has failed and i will have to pay $1800 for repairs. after researching, ive found that this is a common problem with this vehicle. *js
Power steering assist failure - the steering wheel became stiff making the car very difficult to steer. this is a known problem across many different ford models, and they have recalled certain models due to this issue, however they have not issued a recall for 2013 ford focus. a quick internet search shows this is a common problem for 2013 ford focus, so why no recall?
I received a "steering assist fault" while turning on my car (it was parked at the time) steering assist fault. the milage is 64k and the rest of the car is in good shape. however, without warning nor foreseeable cause to this issue. when the warning light came on, i had little control over the steering. upon research there are already various complaints with the same vehicle all of which has happened either the car in motion or merely parked. the cost associated with this known issue that the manufacturer has proven through various sources is unethical. i am filing this complaint because of the possible monetary loss to myself, and high risk nature of this issue that could cause possible injury.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving various speeds, the steering wheel became difficult to turn and the power steering assist warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to state college ford lincoln (3140 west college ave, state college, pa 16801, (814) 238-5041) where it was diagnosed that the steering rack needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired due to the repair fees. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to nhtsa. the approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
Transmission stop working in middle of busy intersection during rush hour. i was turning left, car was stationary waiting for traffic to pass. thankful i think it quit in neutral although dashboard was black & gear shift would not lock into any gear; could be pushed into corner business parking lot. it was fixed but never completely better nor did i feel completely safe. i had 2 clutch replacements, which were also fixed & paid by them. ford dealer replace some recall on side doors, but never fixed the recall on fuel tank, never informed that they ever got part in as letter stated.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving approximately 65 mph, the steering wheel seized and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road, turned the vehicle off, waited a few minutes, and was able to resume driving. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 86,850.
Electric steering rack malfunctions, failing to come on, and displays 'steering fault' on the information display. lately it fails to turn on every time i start the vehicle, only working after i turn the car off and on again. i have had this problem for over a year, but until recently it was infrequent. i am now concerned i will be stranded or that it will fail while driving, potentially causing serious injury.
My electronic power steering is beginning to make noise. it will eventually fail and cause loss of power steering. the dealership said it was the power steering module. to fix it, they would have to replace the entire rack and pinion at considerable cost. i noticed that ford recalled more expensive models for the power steering. why won't they recall my car?
Complete and unexpected loss of power steering (error message: power steering fault). extremely hard to turn wheel. vehicle had to be towed for repair. less than 30,000 miles.
My teenage son was operating the vehicle at relatively low speed (below 20mph) in stop and go traffic in a busy city shopping area, the steering suddenly locked and was very difficult to maneuver left or right. he was able to pull the car off the road into a parking lot with tremendous effort. when trying to turn the wheel left or right the car seemed to lock or grab at the wheel and made an awful screeching sound. he said that several warnings flashed on the message center but he did not catch them as he was trying to get out of traffic safely. once he came to a stop, he noticed that the orange "i" in a box remained lit while the car was running. i went to pick him up and verified the locked steering, noise, and warning light. we left the car overnight and researched potential problems before having it towed to a mechanic. i came across several forums and complaints that sounded very similar to my car's issues. many of these cars had worked after turning off the vehicle and restarting. so the next day i went and started the car with no issues and had no warning lights or indicators. however, as i pulled out the steering was still very tight and jerky but i was able to man-handle the car enough to make it to a local dealer. no warning lights ever came on this time. i was informed that i must replace the power steering control module and have it reprogrammed to determine if this is the only problem at a cost of approximately $450. i have authorized this repair. the dealer said that after this repair, i may also need to replace the steering gear and have the car aligned at an additional cost of approximately $1500. my car is at 89,700 miles.
Steering rack and pinion control module is prone to failing and when this does fail the car cannot turn and this is a huge hazard to the driver and everyone on the road.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving approximately 60 mph, the power steering failed and the vehicle became difficult to steer. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering failed and the steering rack needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened a case. the approximate failure mileage was 98,000.
I purchased a ford focus in 2013 and currently have 28,300 miles on this vehicle. this car has been well maintained and is driven solely by me. however, recently i had a major mechanical problem that could very easily be fatal for any driver. the power steering completely failed and locked up the steering while i was driving. luckily for me i was within 10 feet of my driveway going about three miles per hour. i had to have the car towed to the ford dealer where they wanted over two thousand dollars to repair the power steering. if anyone is driving this car on the highway and this problem occurs, i believe the probability of a serious accident or fatality would be very high. i was told by the ford dealership that the power steering is electronic so when it goes, it becomes unsteerable. alarmingly, when speaking with dealership and the ford area regional manager they did not regard this as a serious problem. in fact, they did not believe this was a defect as it was not covered under warrantee. i asked if this was not defective, how could this occur at 28,300 miles? the dealership told me this could happen if it was hit but admitted there was no evidence of this. i can assure you that this car has not even run over a pot hole. since no one is taking this seriously, i need to document this problem as one that can cause a serious accident if not recalled or corrected by ford motor company. this is a much more severe problem than the auto problem a few years back where cars were accidentally running people over when starting . this is a very serious problem that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. imagine your family driving on a highway at sixty miles an hour and this problem happens, i believe more people should be aware of this possibility before they purchase this vehicle. i for one would have never purchased mine!
Power steering will go out. have to turn car off and on to correct the problem. this often happens while driving. the windshield wipers will turn on without the switch being turned on. they will still run even when the car is turned off and the key is out of the ignition. they will not turn on at other times, especially when needed.
Driving down the road approaching a traffic signal when the steering wheel froze and would not move either left or right. fortunately i was stopped for the signal. i had to think about what i was going to do about holding up traffic. finally i turned the ignition off. i waited approx 10 to 15 seconds. i attempted to start the car and when i started i was able to move the steering wheel. i then proceeded directly to my mechanic very carefully. he told me what he thought the problem was the electronic steering mechanism. i then went directly to the ford dealer, explained my problem and left the car. he contacted me later , said he had to order the part and would let me know when the car was ready to be picked up. the cost? wow. the name of the part was steering gear assembly, reprogram system with the computer. since it was out of warranty, the total cost was $1,972.19.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving low speeds, the steering wheel seized and the brake system warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was able to be restarted and operated correctly. the failure occurred several times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the electric steering motor burned out and needed replacement. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 92,300. *cn
2013 ford focus power steering totally went out while pulling into a parking space. car would still steer but took a tremendous physical effort. dealer diagnosed with a faulty steering epas. ford has recalled other models for this exact issue, but not the focus.
Transmission began shifting incorrectly until finally losing all power leaving me stranded in the passing lane going uphill on a major highway. problem still persisted after the ford dealer reprogrammed the transmission. replacement of transmission control module still has not fixed the issue and the dealer currently doesn't know what the problem is as they hold onto the car for further testing. i've also had the power steering fail on me twice.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving approximately 75 mph, the vehicle experienced a complete loss of steering. the failure occurred without warning. after the failure occurred, the contact slammed on the brakes and the vehicle was able to be stopped. after the failure, the service power steering warning indicator illuminated. the contact also stated that the failure recurred when making turns. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the electrical power steering control module was defective and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was also brought in for a transmission clutch failure every three to six months. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 65,000. the vin was not included.
Steering assist code is coming on and off i lose steering while i'm driving at any speed hwy residential ect. took to dealership they offered to fix for 2 grand but weren't sure if its 100 percent going to fix the steering. so i drive it home the vide has been coming on an off its very unsafe i live in the mountains and its not being considered a safety recall yet, the dealership was unable to duplicate the code so we're unable to diagnose the problem. *tr
The power steering stopped working while driving on a rural highway at 50 mph and the steering became very stiff and difficult to maneuver the car. when i tried to drive the car to the dealership the next day the steering completely locked up and needed to be towed. the odometer was only at 31,870, but out of warranty. the repair bill was $2500 and took 10 days to fix.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving 65 mph, the power steering failed and the power steering assist warning indicator illuminated. the dealer diagnosed that the steering gear failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 128,000.
My power steering assist module was failing intermittently through october/november 2016. finally in december 2016 it decided to fail completely. luckily i wasn't on the road, it failed after parking the car and has been undrivable ever since. i can start it, roll it forwards and back in a straight line, but the steering is locked and won't budge. i have a little over 39000 miles on it and is just out of warranty because of that.
While driving home on a very busy freeway in dallas the steering default warning came on. shortly thereafter numerous other warnings displayed on the dashboard, my car immediately lost acceleration and the engine default light came on causing me to completely stall. i almost caused a major accident being rush hour. i was towed to the dealership where they said i needed a new battery. over $400 later, 4 days later, i picked car up and 5 hours later it did it again. returned car to dealership and this time they reported an evap code. this has nothing to do with the steering and i knew this. i contacted a friend who is a master technician who went into the dealership with me and subsequently i was not charged the diagnostic code again. he discussed this issue and they said the steering was fine and until it happens again there was nothing they could identify to fix!! (however, the repairs the dealer wanted me to agree with now-the evap code?- were just under $2,000 and didn't address the steering code warning in any way. fuel tank, lines & purge valve? all in need of repair 6 hours after car was fixed via a brand new battery) i am at 103,000 miles. i drove the car that night fine, the next day and then again it repeated the steering warning and shut down while in motion on a major freeway that evening. four times later since 11/29/16 i have had this steering warning/subsequent results of almost crashing. this is thee most unsafe vehicle being driven on american roads today. ford should recall this, fix this steering issue once and for all. i will never, ever buy or drive a ford car again. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while driving approximately 60 mph, the steering wheel shook violently and the vehicle failed to accelerate. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the engine was failing. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 74,000.
The power steering assist indicator had been coming on and off a different intervals. when i would come on the steering wheel would lock up and go into manual mode and would have to me muscled while driving until the indicator when off. most of the time this would happen on the highway. the last time this happened was on a street in a densely populated suburb neighborhood. the indicator came on and the vehicle went into manual mode and crashed into a neighbors car. fortunately enough no one was in the vehicle but both cars were damaged. the driver side rear quarter panel of the neighbors' car the drivers side door and quarter the tie outer tie-rod is severely damaged.
While attempting to turn right on two occasions today my wife's 2013 ford focus had no power steering. i have read many complaints about this issue and am very curious as to why ford has not done anything about it? will somebody have to crash and die for the motor company to accept responsibility? there have been several problems with this vehicle since we bought it and the fact that we purchased it practically brand new it is concerning to have so much go wrong.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. while operating the vehicle, the power steering malfunctioned, which made the steering wheel very difficult to turn. when the failure occurred, a warning message would display. no further information was available. the cause of the failure was not diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 56,000.
My 2013 focus titanium electronic rack & pinion failed. it occurred without any prior warning on a busy interstate. miracle without an accident. 49,000 miles. i have no warranty.. my research shows many with similar stories and no recall? this is a serious safety issue.quoted $1800 to repair. so that my car will simply steer? recalls happen for many reasons and to think it hasn't happened for a sudden loss of a vehicles steering in incomprehensible. to repeat, all withoout any warning. no dash light or message! i changed lanes at 60 mph and it would not respond so that i could make the needed correction to not continue in to oncoming traffic. getting it safely to the shoulder was physically difficult and extremely dangerous.
While driving at a high rate of speed(55mph) on a highway, the "power steering assist failure" came up on the dash screen. i immediately noticed the steering was tight to turn. while turning to get off to the side of the road, the tightness got worse. it took a lot of strength to turn the wheel. i almost got in an accident. when the ford dealership diagnosed the problem, they said the steering assist was shot and would cost around $1600 to replace and realign the wheels. they informed me the problem was not a recall issue although i see ford has recalls on various other model power steering assist units. they need to add the focus to the list. *tr
This is the second time this has happened in a month that the power steering module light has come on while driving and i lost power steering. i had to restart the car to reset it. thankful i (and everyone else) was safe and in a secluded area when it happened. this happening on the freeway or neighborhood could be a different story.
I'm another victim of the epas power steering gear assembly failing. it failed on september 26th, while under warranty, but unfortunately i didn't bring it into a dealership on september 30th. two days after the warranty expiration. despite the well-known occurrences of the epas / gear assembly failures, the warranty expiration date, etc., ford still chose to refuse it under warranty care. instead, ford forced me to pay out of pocket with no assistance. the worse part is it nearly caused an accident because it chose to fail in traffic while under operation at low speeds.
Received a "steering assist fault" notification while mid-turn traveling at approximately 30 mph. it felt as if i'd hit a slippery spot in the road or had hit a small bump on the front drivers side. while straightening out of the turn, i noticed a significant change in steering feel, and steering in general became very difficult. there was no gradual decline in steering performance, just a sudden failure. i can only be thankful that i was not traveling at a higher rate of speed. i checked the error codes later and noted the following: u3000-49 (control module: internal electronic failure), u3000-53 (control module: deactivated), u3000-4b (control module: over temperature).
One dec 24 2015 driving down the freeway my car had full loss of steering, the engine light came on, the pedals stopped working and i nearly crashed the car. after pulling off the freeway i turned the car off and it would not start back up. moments later i could start the car, i ran a vehicle health report to prove to ford that something had happened. i then drove my car which was stuck in 1st gear to my destination. the steering was very heavy, the pedals were not working well at all. after leaving it parked for 30 minutes i turned the car on and the check engine illuminated, but the problems had cleared. this feature is very deceiving, as some may assume the car is now safe. i took the car in for repair, and they simply reprogrammed the car. i continue to this day to have transmission issues, and have had the clutch only replaced one time dispite bringing it to them constantly for repair. in january of this year my cars clutch and transmission failed, the car seemed to make a loud acceleration noise and then become forced into 1st gear. this made steering heavy or hard, & the pedals not work with the usual weight on them. i drove my car to ford like this, stuck in 1st to show them finally that the whole time i knew something was wrong. my various other complaints of this vehicle include regular acceleration between 1st and 2nd gear, there is the standard shudder. in addition, my visiting family became stuck in the back seat with indoor latches not working - the child locks were off. i feel as though i was sold a "dud" car & that the salesperson lied to me about the transmission. if i had known it was an "electronically controlled manual car" i would not have purchased it. now i can't get my car appraised, no dealer is willing to buy this car form me. kbb states my current value is at around $9000 and 12 months ago i paid $16000, close to $17000 including financing
On the evening of sept. 8, 2016 while driving straight on lee jackson memorial highway in fairfax, va at about 45 miles per hour, power steering failed with no warning. power assist cut out and a warning indicator came on. this resulted in an immediate challenge to maintain control of the vehicle. i was fortunate an accident did not occur given the immediate, dramatic increase in physical effort required to steer. i was able to safely return home that evening with difficulty, and i brought the car to ted britt ford the following morning. i was told that a control module had failed, but since it was integral to the steering "gear" the entire steering system needs to be replaced at a cost of $1,600. i understand that there is a recall on recent fords with steering problems, but my model, year, and issue are not covered. this is clearly a widespread safety issue. had a smaller adult or a child been driving, this event could have had a very bad end.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford focus. after starting the vehicle, the power steering seized and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. the steering wheel was not functional and the vehicle could not reverse properly. after restarting the vehicle several times, the power steering regained function and the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the mechanic stated that the vehicle's model type was known to experience power steering failure. the failure mileage was 16,000.
Takata recall: while i was driving straight on the highway, my steering wheel stopped responding. it just stiffed up and i had little control of it and it was very hard to make turns. also i noticed some type of malfunction message on the lcd display saying something about the steering wheel stopped working, switching to assist mode, and to take it in for service. i took it to the ford dealer the next day and they said i needed a whole new steering rack, but from reading the same problem that other users of the ford focus 2013 experienced and from my repair invoice, i suspect it has something to do with the (electric power-assisted steering) epas
I own a 2013 ford focus. the dealer replaced tcm module and updates as needed due to recall. my car has 60k miles and every since dealer completed work, my steering wheel will not turn once you first crank the car. after it idles for awhile, i can drive off. as of this morning, my "steering assist default service required" sensor is on, and my steering will not turn at all. there is also a clicking noise, like a blinker, that will not stop even if keys are out of ignition.
Backing out of a parking space and the power steering failed. wheel could not be turned at all. vehicle had to be towed to a dealer since an independent repair shop could not repair. total cost of the repair was $1793.43. the vehicle only had 49k miles at the time of the failure.
While driving on highway making sweeping rh turn steering wheel suddenly turned to the left enough that i crossed into another lane. got off highway, no warning indicators. went through town and on bumpy pavement or low speed turns steering wheel would fight my efforts to turn. called dealer and drove the car there the next morning. finally a warning appeared that said steering assist failure. it was then i realized car was twitching in / out of manual steering and would jerk steering wheel from my hands if i didn't keep a death grip on the wheel. this 2013 focus has had clutch pack replacement, tcm failure and horn intermit working. if you don't hold wheel tight i could see a crash would be likely. this car scares me but can't afford a new car, heck this is a new car with 65,000 miles on it. can't wait to see dealer bill for this. ugh
