We have classified the 1052 complaints from 2012 Ford Focus about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
I have taken my car in 7 times for transmission issues and malfunctions always while driving on highway! thankfully i purchased extended warranty but it expired. now i am back at the dealership for the 8th time and they want to charge me $2100.00 to fix a problem that was never really fixed to start with! now i am having steering problems! the steering just goes out while driving on the highway and in city. the fact that the steering just stops working is extremely dangerous it has put me in very hazardous situations! this is the second time the steering has gone out while driving! i have to pull over and shut car off for 10minutes before restarting. my wife had the kids in the car with her heading to the store and it went out and she had no clue what to do and not strong enough to force the wheel to get the car off the road so she was left sitting in the middle of the highway with the kids until the steering would work again. its disgusting that ford refuses to fix these problems since they are extremely dangerous!
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start while attempting to drive. the vehicle was towed to malloy ford of charlottesville (located at 1300 richmond rd, charlottesville, va 22911, (434) 977-7960), but a failure code could not be found with the transmission and alternator. the dealer repaired the connector of the bcm. while driving approximately 50 mph and approaching a stop light, the contact depressed the brake pedal, but the vehicle failed to decelerate. the vehicle also failed to accelerate appropriately. the contact drove to her home. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic to determine the cause of the failures. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 70,000.
We purchased this vehicle as my daughters first car a year ago. it looks great but has issues. the transmission/clutch feels like it slips. the car always revs high. and you touch the gas pedal and sometimes it jolts too quickly. today, i drove on freeway and came to a stop with red light at off ramp. light turns green and push on gas and it shuttered and then propelled forward. felt like it couldn't get in gear? it has done this a few times while in motion and on the freeway too, slips or sputters. i'm fearful for my young daughter being less experienced of a driver in this unsafe vehicle. i'm reading other peoples complaints, and i see many, many are having the same issues. we bought the car w 86k miles april 2017. now has 97k. we will take the car in to our ford dealer tomorrow.
My wife's steering wheel was turning when she was stuck at work...steering assist fault...service required came up on the screen...was on her screen. https://www.consumeraffairs.com/news/ford-vehicles-with-steering-issue-recalled-062915.html http://www.arfc.org/complaints/2012/ford/focus/steering/problem.aspx https://owner.ford.com/tools/account/maintenance/recalls/results.html http://money.cnn.com/2018/03/14/news/companies/ford-steering-wheel-recall/index.html
At 73,000 miles error code in dash read steering assist malfunction service needed. it is very difficult to steer my car. at 76,000 miles error code read engine too hot, stop safely and wait 8 minutes. car shudders and high revs at low speeds and very loud engine noise. i hope that ford recalls these issues soon!!!
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving 40 mph, the vehicle began to delay and hesitate. also, the check engine warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle would not exceed 30 mph. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the transmission needed to be replaced. the contact called columbiana ford (located at 14851 south ave, columbiana, oh 44408, (330) 482-3831) and was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was informed of the failure. the failure mileage was 90,000.
Takata recall transmission light come on lose reverse an drive clutch stick its an auto
While driving down the interstate, the vehicle lost power as if it shifted into neutral the rpms rose and the vehicle stopped powering forward. no warning signals appeared on the control panel of the vehicle. took vehicle directly to ford dealership where they stated that there were no recorded faults and therefore they could not do anything to the vehicle.
Power steering completely stopped working. almost wrecked the car. transmission vibrates and makes noise
On multiple occasions my 2012 ford focus got stuck in park and would not shift into drive. the steering wheel would not turn. the shift stick would not move from park back into drive. the electrical lights 'p n d s' turned off on the dash. when i pushed on the brake the car would not shift back into drive. last night it happened in the middle of rush hour traffic at a red light. i turned the car on and off several times. the dash board lights would come on , but 'p n d s' remained unlit and the car would not shift back into drive. after 4 or 5 times of turning car on and off and opening and closing the door (this affects dash board lights some how). the lights came back on and the car would allow me to shift back into drive while pushing on the brake.
Tl* the contact owned a 2012 ford focus. while making a left turn at 15 mph, the transmission control module (tcm) warning indicator illuminated, the contact's vehicle stalled and crashed into the side of another vehicle. the contact was not injured. a police report was filed. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. the vehicle was destroyed. star ford lincoln (1101 s brand blvd, glendale, ca 91204, (818) 956-0977) was informed of the crash. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 13v523000 (power train). additionally, the transmission control module and clutch were replaced on september 5, 2017. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 76,000.
Clutch and front seal defective causing transmission fluid to leak out thereby causing transmission bearings to fail. ford admits to defective front seals and will replace for free but refuses to cover transmission problem that was due to their defective seals.
Transmission went to neutral while driving at 55 mph. displayed warning that transmission overheated. pilled on to side of road avoiding being rear ended by semi truck. turned vehicle off waited 10 min restarted vehicle drove 1/2 mile back to dealership no warning messages. 4th time into dealership for transmission failure.
Driving on a city street when it just would not go after a red light. when i did get it to move off of the city street to a parking lot it was hard to steer. all the lights started flashing. i could not lock the doors with my remote, would not start. i had to have it towed to my house. the next morning i put my code reader on the vehicle and found about 13 fault codes which i reset since then i have had multiple instances of my vehicle shutting down, hard steering and transmission not shifting or going into gear. displays transmission overheating, transmission malfunction service now. wont,t go into gear. horn stopped working and withut doing anything it suddenly started working.
Transmission module recall problem getting worse it has in the shop 3 times , almost caused an accident because the car wouldn't move at a light on a hill.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. on several occasions, while driving various speeds, the vehicle hesitated and jerked. on one occasion, while driving 60 mph, the transmission vibrated and the vehicle stalled. the transmission faulty warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to lance cunningham ford at (866) 591-3943 (4101 clinton hwy, knoxville, tn 37912) where it was diagnosed that the clutch needed to be replaced. the vehicle was then taken to an auto center where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact called the manufacturer on several occasions, but was directed to voicemail. the approximate failure mileage was 113,000.
My 2012 ford focus has already had a transmission failure within the first 42,000 miles. specifically, at 41,968. i was driving in traffic when the car began shuddering violently and an error message appeared. the car could not accelerate properly and it was revving on its own. luckily, i was able to pull over amidst heavy traffic before the car shut itself off. had i been on the highway, i would have been in a serious accident. i brought it back to the dealer to have them tell me that it was simply a sensor that needed to be replaced, and they sent me on my way. since then, the car still shudders when accelerating from a stop, as well as producing grinding noises as you turn. this is indicative of a continuing safety hazard. after doing extensive research online, i have come to the same conclusion as hundreds of other focus owners - this car is unsafe to drive. my car is currently at 56000 miles, which worries me because in addition to the transmission problems, many other owners have reported extremely serious steering problems, some of which have proven to be fatal. please take action and demand ford fix these problems. i don't want to die in a car accident that could have been prevented by something as simple as a recall. thank you for what you do and please use this as a sign to look into this problem.
Nov 27, 2017. got in my car after work and steering assist light came on. put hands on steering wheel and i had no power steering. called a mechanic he said it would be $1800 to fix it. same thing has happened to five other people he knows.
2012 ford focus. consumer writes in regards to parts being unavailable for transmission/tcm safety recall. *ld the consumer stated the dashboard illuminated "parking aid malfunction-service required". the dealer advised this was a recall and to contact the manufacturer. the manufacturer was contacted. *js
Vehicle transmission jerky - more noticeable a few weeks after purchase from ford dealership va beach ford april/may 2016. dealer said it had to learn driving style, they also updated some software in 2016 - provided no documentation for update - after update car seemed quieter. almost 1.5years later the vehicle cut off on a back road with my husband and 5 year old daughter whilst in motion. took it to a ford dealer overseas where we are stationed. in october 2017 they switched the tcm box, car worked way better. as of january 2020, the shudder/jerking has returned and we also now have door lock actuator failure, we had one before we found out it was a warranty repair issue and had a local mechanic repair one of the rear ones. was driving and for some reason the driver's side lock would not hold to car frame. dealer had to order the locks to replace on two front door positions. not sure why they are not replacing all the locks. we have also told ford usa, ford usa europe representative and ford italy about the shuddering returning and they all sent us back to one of the other parties. i believe they don't care anymore since they are in the hole. when we asked ford usa for assistance told us that military autosource would assist in all service related issues. even military autosource has backed out of trying to lift a finger to assist since this transmission issue is bigger than them. looks like they have essentially began to cut ties with any car customer owners in the usa market.
I can't drive this vechicle on the road because the transmission overheats and slips. i would be at a stop and it's in drive but does not go anywhere. my vehicle rollas back and almost cause a accident. due to a faulty powershift dual clutch transmission. there is a class action law suit on ford but as a consumer i have to wait ten business days to even settle a claim. my life is in danger because i feel like a vechicle will hit me soon in the middle of a intersection. i need help from someone please. im begging you ford has made no attempts to help me and i still owe 5,000 to pay it off. which this vechicle is far to low valued. if anyone can help me with this issue asap.
The biggest complaint i have is the annoying shuddering. it's noticeable on light accelerating. sometimes the shuddering is so bad that you can't hardly accelerate when pulling out into traffic or after pulling off after you have stop at a stop sign or stop light. this has been going on since i got the car in october of 2017 i've taken it to the dealership for this issue & they told me that's how the car is supposed to drive.
Sync module failed. costing $1000 to fix. a smog part failure resulted in ford wanting 2000 to repair and replace the fuel tank. the clutch fails to engage on low speed turns creating a loss of control. ford fixed with the recall. steering fault detected making it near impossible to steer the car. recall is available on other models but not focus. another 1000 to fix it. ford is unsafe!
When going up hill the transmission slips and motor revs up and down. at very low speed when pulling into uphill driveway the car lurches forward. when stopped on a small hill you can slowly let pressure of brake the car will drift backwards like it is in neutral. when first starting out of a parking position the car will speed up with out any change in throttle position.
Transmission failing unsafe to drive
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving 35 mph, the transmission became inoperable without warning. the contact stated that the vehicle stopped in traffic. the contact was unable to shift the vehicle into gear, and the forward and reverse gears failed. the vehicle was towed to d & d ford (13655 e wade hampton blvd, greer, sc 29651, (855) 505-1172) to be diagnosed. the contact was informed of dtc code: p0785 (timing solenoid malfunction) and that the clutch actuators and slave cylinder failed and needed to be replaced. additionally, the transmission clutch motor #2 was switched to clutch motor #1 and the tcm module was replaced prior to the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 133,230.
While driving on surface streets @ 25 mph, check engine light came on. transmission shuddering, rough shifting, overheated and needed to stop driving to cool down. after parked overnight, car won't start. tried three times and then hold key and car resets and starts. waited next day, car won't start. tried three times and then hold key and car resets and starts. drove car to dealership. need new clutch, battery in transmission, transmission control module and other parts. car has only 118k miles on it.
Was driving car and randomly a warning came up ' power steering assist fault service required' then power steering turned off. turn car off turn back on fix the problem. then problem came back and has not gone away. i have no power steering. radio has been acting strange since purchased car
I have 2012 ford focus with about 85,000 miles. since 2014, i've had my tcm reprogrammed several times and then replaced in dec 2015 under the extended warranty after it completely stopped working. i brought my car to ford again in july 2017 because my steering locked up while i was attempting to back up in a parking lot. i was told it was the epas system, and it would cost about $1,800 to replace since it's not covered under warranty. at their insistence, i paid for the replacement. i also made a complaint with the national highway traffic safety administration at that time. since july, i've have been back to three ford dealerships - first two times because of a grinding noise (they couldn't diagnose it then but have since said it is my clutch) and a second time this past tuesday (9/12) after my car basically short circuited in a parking lot on monday and it started lurching forward while trying to reverse...simultaneously my breaks locked up and my steering locked up again (my sound/radio display/front buttons were also intermittently not working). jc ford did some "reprogramming" but said they couldn't duplicate the issues and told me my clutch would need replaced eventually but ford would not cover it until it got worse. they told me these problems were unrelated despite me insisting they all felt similar while driving the vehicle. yesterday (weds, 9/13), while attempting to turn onto a highway, my car again "stalled"/short-circuited (not sure what exactly happened - but the same thing as the previous times) and my breaks locked up and i couldn't move the vehicle from the middle of the road. fortunately, i was able to get it out of the road after turning it off and on several times. i immediately took it to a ford nearby and am waiting to hear if they find anything else. i am now scared to drive my vehicle despite ford looking at it and "fixing" it several times.
Shudder when taking off, seems to be from 1st to 2nd....or 2nd to third. i dont really know. automatic gearbox. as well, my radio will crackle and pop then "freeze" no sound or control other than a very loud and distracting static and popping from the speakers. this has gotten much worse.
The check engine light will not turn off, the door sensors keep ringing, and the transmission does not shift properly amd rools backwards when i apply the brakes
Power steering assist fault came on right after starting vehicle. was unable to move the steering wheel. kept shutting car down and restarting but to no avail. the previous day while on the freeway in commuter traffic day the ongoing transmission problem that 2 different local ford service centers worked on 3 separate occasions. the 1st time i was told they replaced the transmission. the following times they replace a competent and re-programed it. as soon as i left the service center i could tell nothing was done. i called the service rep back and he said it was "adaptive" and i needed to allow it time to adapt. i was told i had a cracked motor mount. i told him it had to be caused by the violent jerking of the transmission when accelerating regardless of the circumstances. in stop and go city traffic i have been close several times to being rear ended because of its jerking /hesitation/acceleration. tow truck driver could not move the wheel. vehicle finally towed to local dealer. my extended warranty has been covering the transmission repairs but was told the safety problem on the steering was not covered under the warranty. i'm told to fork over 2k + to fix the steering before they would attempt servicing the transmission. ford knows they have problems with steering and transmission but fail to correct them. the steering has been documented about going out on drivers at high rate of speeds on the freeway. ford is intentionally risking the lives of focus owners and passengers. this is a serious safety issue that ford needs to correct now by immediate recall. it's obvious they gave no idea how to correct the transmission problem.
Transmission shutters, and driver door opens up while driving.17 year old son drives this car worried about his safety. screen shot this document! !!!
While driving down the freeway at 60 mph the inspection light came on and a message stating the power assist has faulted and requires maintenance. when i attempted to pull off at the next off ramp the car was extremely difficult to maneuver and i almost went of the side of the ramp. i had to struggle to get the car home.
Engine started growling and became very sluggish. at stop lights or even in traffic, the engine would shut off causing for a dangerous situation. had vehicle repaired in april and now the same troubles are starting to appear again.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that the vehicle jerked violently when the accelerator pedal was depressed while driving. the failure recurred once. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact stated that the vehicle was previously taken to keystone ford located in chambersburg, pa where the transmission was updated and the control switch of the transmission was replaced; however, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 79,798.
When driving on city street to have the "check engine" light checked, the automatic transmission would go out of gear, the engine would rev up, then the transmission would slam back into 1st gear momentarily, then shift to a much lower gear (3rd?), moving at an unsafe speed for the traffic conditions, then slam back into 1st gear again before starting the whole process over again. moving from a stop, the same thing would happen. nor would it engage reverse to back up to park; it would only rev up. this car is unsafe to drive anywhere! ford needs to recall this transmission asap, at no cost & permanently fix the ongoing problems with it, not just bandaid fixes.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that the vehicle experienced unintended acceleration, jerking, and hesitation. as a result, the vehicle was involved in a front end collision. the failure occurred and the vehicle was taken to all american ford where it was diagnosed that the transmission was defective and the clutch needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. the contact stated that the vehicle had numerous software updates and the clutch was replaced previously. a police report was not filed. there were no injuries. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case number: 128-21707. the contact was referred to the dealer. the failure mileage was approximately 37,505.
Got car on 05/15//17, driving car stopped car gears wouldn't work car wouldn't move, had car in for this reprogrammed module, car did the same thing. car has a manufacturer defect that can't be fixed. i told my brother if i and my dad end up dead in it he's to sue ford.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving 10 mph, the vehicle inadvertently shifted into neutral. after several moments and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle shifted back into drive. the contact mentioned that the check engine warning indicator illuminated and he was able to drive the vehicle home with no further issues. the vehicle was not taken to an independent mechanic or local dealer for diagnostic testing or repairs. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the transmission was still under warranty. the contact received a class action settlement notice in the mail. the failure mileage was approximately 69,000.
Transmission stalls. vehicle.jerks & grinds.wont shift into reverse.caused my wife to almost have accident on freeway. class action in progress.wife has canser & cant get to dr.
5/4/16 car would not start in a parking lot and had to be towed to the dealer. dealer replaced faulty tcm fsa 14m02 7/22/17 while driving 70 mph on the expressway car abruptly jerked, rpms shot up from about 2500 to 5000 loss of power. had to pull over to the shoulder, put car in park and then back in drive, & transmission re-engaged. 7/24/17 while driving 65 mph on expressway car abruptly jerked, rpms shot up again. loss of power. pulled over to the shoulder, put car in park and back in drive, no re-engagement of the transmission, put car back in parked, turned it off, restarted car, transmission re-engaged. 7/25/17 drove to dealer, while driving shifting became increasingly hard/harsh, shifting became more delayed as well. dealer reported faulty tcm and damaged clutch. both are to be replaced on 7/26/17 fsa 14m01 fsa 14m02
Ford has issued numerous bulletins related to problems with the ford focus transmission. over the past few years ford has extended the coverage on certain systems. my car transmission failed, preventing the car from being driven faster than approximately 15 mph (first gear). the dealer completed a software reboot which temporarily addressed the problem but stated that i needed a new "clutch pack" (approximately $1,600). although the software reboot was covered under one of the warranty extensions, the clutch pack was not. apparently, the software that tells the system what to do is covered, but the hardware is not? i am very disappointed that ford refuses to fix the problem in spite of numerous issues that have been identified and documented. the issue/problem that i experienced has been well documented, but ford refuses to address the fact that faulty design has caused this issue.
I was driving my 2012 ford focus out of town while i was away for work and the clutch went while i was driving and almost caused me to go off the road.
My car is having transmission problems, and loses power and has a hard time shifting sometimes. i got a recall notice at one time and lost the paperwork, and the ford dealership refused to look up the recall and said i needed to have the paperwork to get it looked at.
2012 ford focus. consumer writes in regard to safety hazard; transmission shifting out of gear unexpectedly. *as *tr
Help me understand why the nhtsa has not forced a recall concerning the major issues found with these transmissions? has ford pulled the wool over the eyes of nhtsa just as they have with their very own customers? my car sits at the dealership because im not convinced the mechanic has determined the true cause of the trans to cause a loss of power while i was driving about 20-25mph the trans seemed to slip into neutral but when pressing the gas ped the engine wouldnt rev nor would the car go any faster. i was 1/4 mile from my house & turned around to go back, i shut the car off & back on, the engine revved & back to idle, i put in reverse & it hesitated to move but did, i put in forward & it revved up 2x again while i to coast to my driveway. my car has shuddered at times & seemed to hesitate to know what gear to go into although i figured it to be normal since i owned the car since 9/2016 & the more i drove the more i assumed it was a type of trans that acted like a manual when it changed gears, i have only recently learned of all the major problems while doing research. i am concerned for my safety after reading just a small amount of customer complaints. the check engine light was on when i experienced the loss of power and codes p2831 p2832 & p287b were present. the mechanic said the "mechanical mechanism" is "stuck" keeping the clutch applied. he made this assumption with the transmission still installed & not checking the internal components; he must be pretty darn good to do all that! he checked the tcm per notification 14m02 which surprising passed. to the best of my knowledge notification 14m01 was not checked which would require the trans be removed from what i read. tsb 15-0121 also calls out a potential cause. they want me to pay $2500 to replace the clutch just to be able to further diagnose potential problems without fully diagnosing the problem. 78000mi
On long trips (over 160 miles) with consistently high speeds, the engine torque and tachometer gauge level rises/whines, indicating a shift should be made in the automatic transmission, but the automatic transmission lags behind, causing the hover/forward stall due to engine torque, much like when you increase the torque causing the engine to "roar" before shifting in a manual transmission. this usually happens while accelerating on higher speed roads and highways at higher speeds, usually 40-70 mph range and mostly when on a long trip w/o stopping, except for gas. car is always in motion and there is no change in engine temp and no warning lights lit.this problem has occurred many times in the past 18 months. the date indicated was the most recent date.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving 40 mph, the "transmission malfunction service now" indicator illuminated. the vehicle hesitated and failed to accelerate. the vehicle was towed to academy ford (13401 baltimore ave, laurel, md 20707) where it was diagnosed that the transmission control module and transmission clutch failed and needed to be replaced. the module was repaired, but the clutch was not. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the issue was "in the process of being recalled" and transferred the contact directly to nhtsa for a "status update." the approximate failure mileage was 98,500.
Transmission continually falters and sensors give out. literally gave out while i was driving down the middle of the road. luckily there wasn't any oncoming traffic. this isn't the first time the transmission has faltered, but it was the most severe instance. other instances occurred while driving also. others have experienced this as well: http://www.wtae.com/article/investigation-finds-hundreds-of-complaints-about-ford-transmissions-1/7464893 http://www.carcomplaints.com/ford/focus/2012/transmission/ http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/mk3-tsb-recall-problems-archive/411722-2012-transmission-shudder-issue-explained.html http://www.lemonlaw.com/wordpress/ford-focus-transmission-problem/
