Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2012 Ford Focus

Canister purge valve recall (cpv) and prior powertrain and pcm recall issues. history involving powertrain, pcm and cpv. check engine light (cel) came on a few years ago and the car could not restart. could have had an accident. recently, in the summer 2019, cel on and gave a code about faulty catalytic converter when i spent $106 at green ford to read and diagnosis the code. the light went on and off and on september 8, 2019, the car stalled and/or would not start back up many times when the cel was on. the car would not crank the next morning, twice, on the way to green ford, and waiting on recall to be performed. the car has 151,000 miles and is a one owner vehicle. the powertrain, pcm and this current issue has been the only issues that seems to be connected.

Car hesitates and shudders before pulling off from a complete stop. create a tin rattling noice when make turns too fast. the hesitation is too dangerous.

Vehicle stalls during acceleration, will not shift into reverse, skipping and shifting hard when driving, cuts off during driving (especially upon downshift) vehicle has a ford extended warranty to 100,000 miles or 10 years to replace the tcm. dealership refuses to make the car safe because they say it is not a recall.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving, the contact heard an abnormal winding noise. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to uptown ford lincoln (2111 n mayfair rd, milwaukee, wi 53226, (414) 771-9000) where it was diagnosed that the transmission module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: [xxx]. the failure mileage was 94,000. parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *dl

Have taken my focus four times to ford. twice for the shuddering the car was doing to tucker ford in brunswick me. and now twice to rowe ford in auburn, me. where a new clutch was put in and now the module that controls the clutch needs to be replaced and ford will not cover. they want 950.00 to do the work and i may get my money back in the settlement. the car has been there for a week and a half. i have taken pictures of the code from the car and all repair records since i filed with the settlement group. ford is making things even more difficult to deal with any clutch issues. they even admit the issues and do nothing at the dealership. they are waiting for the customer top get made and just pay for the repair so that they may not have to cover it in the end. the code that came up is transmission malfunction service now and no hill asst.. i was driving on a flat road.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving 40 mph, the transmission failure warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle changed into second gear independently. the vehicle was taken to thomaston ford, inc (2230, 1011 us-19, thomaston, ga 30286, (706) 648-2191) to be diagnosed, but the results were unknown. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted, but the contact was not able to speak with a representative. the failure mileage was 53,000.

When you go to pull out the car wants to jump an stall then u be going down the road some an the engine light will come on an the transmission dont want to go out of gear the way it should i have a 7 month old grand baby an it scares me to drive something thats so defective. please respond to this. had it check at fors an they still ant fixed it

Was driving home on a fairly busy street then suddenly vehicle randomly started to jerk and kick while accelerating. when accelerating in drive, the car was stuck in neutral and then suddenly jolted and went to first gear then second and then back to first all in a span of 20 seconds. the rpm was erradict and rised and dropped dramatically. coming to a stop, the car would hesitate and continue to move forward despite braking so i had to keep a wide distance from the vehicle in front of me for fear that the car will lunge forward upon accelerating or trying to stop. i had to drive less than 20 mph, any higher and the car was kicking and jolting.

This car is my daily driver, it still rolls back on an incline and hesitates on take off and acceleration.

My car has, since the time i bought it, stuttered randomly when accelerating. this has caused issues where merging into traffic from a stop can be unreliable, causing me to fail to enter traffic at the expected speed and causing increased risk for a collision. i think it might be a transmission, since it feels like a gear is slipping. eventually, through the stuttering, i will gain enough speed to where it stops being an issue. (possibly when entering the next gear)

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that the vehicle hesitated at the stop light. there was no warning indicator illuminated. the contact called ganley ford west at 216-941-9800 (located at 16100 lorain ave, cleveland, oh 44111) and was informed that letters were sent out approximately five years ago and that the warranty would have covered the failure at that time. the technician stated that the warranty was currently expired. the failure recurred several times. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not confirm that a letter was sent to the contact. the manufacturer stated that the warranty was expired. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 59,000.

Got the fuel system recall last week and ford sent the dealership the wrong software. car is parked in garage, scared it ill overheat and leave us stranded.

After purchasing the car, it stared to have transmission issues. took it to repair shop. they reworked the front end and transmission. the computers on both the front end and transmission failed to sync together. this caused a total failure of the transmission. i had the transmission replaced only to have it fail four months later. the car started to jerk, jump forward and then stopped moving. the engine was racing but the transmission did not work. i was left in the middle of a busy intersection and thankfully had people help me push it out of the road. it's back at the repair shop, again its the transmission module and transmission. !

Takata recall when attempting to reverse out of a parking space, i put my car in the reverse gear however nothing happened. i tried several times, pressing on the gas pedal but the car would only back up slightly. after some time i was able to slowly back out and shift into drive. when i was in drive, the car was moving very slowly and jerking as i was in motion. i was able to get to a local garage to have my vehicle checked out. the garage communicated that they could not get the car to drive at all. they tried driving it in reverse as well as forward.

The transmission and clutch have been defective since purchasing the car. transmission was worked on under warranty but continues to be sluggish and unreliable especially when trying to move forward after a complete stop. vehicle jerks and shutters. clutch has now gone out per the dealer and ford refuses to take responsibility for this known defect. car is undriveable at no fault of ours. filed a case with ford and was told that our only recourse was if nhsta put out a new recall or extended warranty to allow for additional owners to have vehicles repaired at ford's expense. we have contacted multiple non-ford repair shops who refuse to work on this make/model/year due to the known issues with transmission and clutch.

Car will start to shudder when accelerating after coming to a stop (ex. stop sign/light). vehicle wont start after pumping gas. fuel gauge seems to be off even after a recall was done. when accelerating rpm will go up but the car wont accelerate.

My 2012 ford focus sel has an issue where a yellow icon will come up on the dash then display another icon saying that there is a steering assist malfunction and that service is needed. the steering wheel will not move and literally takes all of your power to get it to move. after several times of turning the car on and off it will work but always comes up with that icon again. this has even happened while i was driving! this is a major safety issue! i am not trying to die while i drive my car down the road. ford also replaced the transmission on my car about a year ago for a transmission recall after the car would shutter when going into first gear. now, a year later the problem is happening again and just as bad. when my husband and i went to ford they said that the warranty was up and that they couldn't help me. it was either hit the road or pay $1,500 to replace it again! you're telling me that you put in a faulty replacement part and now expect me to pay out of my pocket to replace your mistake? that's hilarious!! when i turn left into my neighborhood while going across oncoming traffic, it's scary when my car shutters into first gear to the point where i stall in the middle of the road and almost get hit. come on ford, get your stuff together! if you truly care about the safety of your customers like you say that you do, then protect us. fix your mess and don't put dangerous cars on the road. also, when people come back and say they are having problems that have even led to death again i say, fix the issue.

While driving car jerking, rpm going high, speed slowing down. warning transmission hot pull over as soon as possible. after sitting on side of road for 30 minutes (car said to do so for 8 minutes) car didn't want to crank, reverse not working and few miles down the road warning again, entire time sputtering and jerking. very unsafe in traffic and almost rear ended several times due to the vehicle acting awful. this first happened on major 4 lane hwy and again on secondary hwy. after checking on line it states it may be a volunteer recall at ford. after reading more into it found out ford does not want to claim problems with transmission although there are over 2600 complaints. guessing it will take an accident and law suit to make them wake up at ford. there has been memo's from ford but they are now saying nope didn't happen. if something happens to my child while driving this rest assure i will be going after ford. can't afford to trade it off and sending him to college. now car is not wanting to crank up and run after sitting several hours. finally cranked and still jerking and loosing speed with out warning. almost in wreck again.

Ford focus transmission jerks and shudders while moving and while accelerating . have had multiple repairs with no fix. have had car stall in the past while trying to accelerate on a city street while traveling at ~35 mph. it felt like transmission went to 6th gear instead of 2nd and stalled the engine. problems started immediately after purchase, ~february 2012 still have car now and still doing the shuddering and jerking while driving. problems started new ~100 miles currently at ~85000miles

Ford will not repair the transmission clutch for no charge. drops out of gear, shudders, stalls in motion, city streets, turning and highways. have asked several times in the past to repair. needs a recall on vehicles.

I have stalled in an intersection before with oncoming traffic. we are scared to drive it and it is my only car. my children were in the car when we stalled in an intersection. it continues to stall or almost stall daily, it seems to lose power and then speed up. it also just stalled entirely one day while driving and then we have over $1,000.00 in bills from our mechanic. all of these incidents occurred while the car was in motion. it has happened on local streets and while turning. also i just 7/23 as a date, but this happens daily

The car jutters upon acceleration with the changing of gears. when attempting to pass cars, the transmission slips and takes a second to get into gear and begin accelerating. problems gaining speed to merge with highway traffic. getting much worse by the day.

Takata recall : i was on the interstate at almost a complete stop and started to accelerate and the car had a violent jerk and almost stalled out. it never completely stalled out and quit, but it threw the code for the clutch actuator circuit low and continues to jerk in the lower gears from 1st to 2nd. around 25-30 and again some around 40-45..however, once it gets to 50+ the car is fine.

The vehicle shudders from a compete stop or accelerating this has happened since purchase of the vehicle. most recently the car will accelerate when driving or in worst cases while braking. the vehicle has ramped up to 6000rpm while braking going down hill. upon contacting local ford dealership about the unintended acceleration, they stated they had not heard of this issue before. advised me to stop driving the vehicle and have it towed to their facility.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start and the gear failed to engage. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was towed to the driver's residence. a mechanic came to the contact's home and diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was later taken to another independent mechanic and, while driving, the transmission warning indicator illuminated. the failure indicated that the transmission was overheating. the mechanic diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was later taken to autonation chevrolet valencia (23649 valencia blvd, santa clarita, ca 91355) where it was diagnosed that the tcm code and the dual clutch needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact stated that while on the way to the dealer, the vehicle stalled and was pushed over to the side of the road. the vehicle was restarted, but hesitated to drive. the manufacturer was made aware of the failures and provided case number: cas17998196-c0f7c0. the failure mileage was approximately 115,000.

We began experiencing transmission "slipping" about 2 years ago, around 120,000 miles. the car shudders at lower speeds and when you go to accelerate from a standstill, it shakes like the car is going in and out of neutral. we looked up the issue and it appears to be a big problem for fords everywhere but we were told we were out of warranty. the dealer offered to do a transmission fluid flush to see if that would help, but unfortunately it didn't. our next step would need to be a new transmission. we recently took the car back in to the dealer because we had seen a memo from ford that they were fixing cars like ours if they showed up to a dealer between 7/12-7/19. we took the car in on 7/19. we called ford customer care (as directed by the dealer) to open a case # so the dealer could perform the special repair and still get paid. they denied the dealers request to fix the car and i had to call ford customer care back to ask about the memo that said they were fixing cars that showed up between 7/12-7/19. i told them it had been dropped off and the repair order opened on 7/19 to which they said i was out of warranty. i continued to ask about the memo the dealer had shown us, but instead they continued to simply say i was out of warranty. now, after several calls to the ford customer care team, they say they don't have an answer yet but the supervisor will call me back in 2-3 business days. the car is still at the dealer and i haven't had a car for almost a week, as they have not been instructed to fix it yet by ford. the dealer has been very nice and helpful throughout the whole process, but ford has been incredibly frustrating and won't follow through on the original promise they showed the dealer in the memo. every time i call they act like they never sent that memo.

Aggressive jerking when shifting at lower gears during acceleration (multiple times per week; first occurrence in 2012) sudden, but temporary, loss of power with rpm spike during highway driving (like shifting to neutral). has occurred while accelerating and merging from an on-ramp and while driving at steady highway speeds (~1-2 events per month; first occurrence in 2016)

This is the third summer my transmission stopped working. i was driving to work on the high way and when i stepped on the gas pedal the acceleration meter went up but the car was slowing down. i pulled over to the side of the road and the transmission malfunction screen came up on the dashboard and the car needed to be towed to a shop. ever time this happened (3 so far) i was driving on the highway and it cost me $1200+ to repair.

My ford focus shutters and does not accelerate properly. i have had my dual clutch replaced by ford 2 times and the problems persist. now car is now out or warranty with 120,000 miles and now ford claims it's my problem. i first got my clutch replaced at 60,000 miles, then 85,000 miles and the problems keep reoccurring. my car can't accelerate without shaking and shuttering and it poses a hazard when in traffic. it is unsafe and ford has refused to actually fix the problem over the past 5 years.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while at an intersection, the contact depressed the accelerator pedal, but the vehicle failed to accelerate. also, the transmission malfunction service indicator illuminated. the contact moved to the shoulder of the road, turned the vehicle off and back on, and the vehicle returned to normal. the vehicle was taken to healey ford lincoln (2528 ny-17m, goshen, ny 10924, (877) 706-3640) where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the dealer replaced the dual clutch and updated the pcm, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was made ware of the failure and informed the contact that the vin was not included in a recall. the failure mileage was 129,000.

I bought my cpo 2012 focus in 2015. within days, i experienced the transmission lagging and the car excessively rolling back in reverse on inclines (i literally have to drive with two feet when braking on an incline in my automatic transmission car or i will roll backwards into the next car!) i had the car re-flashed once at the dealership, but it did not do anything. after further research, i was hesitant on taking my car back because other owners online said work performed by the dealership only made matters worse.

Transmission excessive shudder,,,pulling into traffic you dont know if car will stall or go when accelerator is pushed,,bought car for my daughter,,,ford should be ashamed

When driving my vehicle on the highway, if i attempt to speed up to pass another vehicle it will lurch violently. one time it lurched forward and then stalled. fortunately i was in the right hand lane and could pull over to the shoulder without incident, had i been in the middle or left lane it might have been a different story.

Vehicle shudders and makes noise at low speeds on braking. occasionally shudders on acceleration from stop. previously replaced clutch and tcm for similar issues, now advised that transmission needs replacement also. handles steady interstate speeds fine, but speed changing results in vehicle losing responsiveness. city driving/turning affected as well.

The transmission has been refreshed 2 times now the transmission shifts hard when taking off it is jumpy when taking off sometimes will not go into reverse and sometimes will get hot enough so you have to pull over when pulling out into traffic tou can't as inhave had the car stall before i bought this car brand new and have had nothing but issues with the transmission

I had 2 recalls on locks and fuel pump and now today @7:00am i have transmission melfunction. i will never buy a ford again

I made a right turn out of a parking lot, put my foot on the accelerator and my car would not go any faster. i pressed harder and harder on the accelerator and my car still wouldn't go any faster. i pulled off on a side street to get out of the traffic and put my car in park. i ran the shifter through the gears, put my car back in drive and it still would not go very fast. i turned around and headed back to my house and drove as fast as i could which was about 5 miles an hour. i went back into the parking lot and put my car in reverse and it would not go in reverse at all. i put it in park, again i ran it through the gears, put it in reverse and in would not go backwards still. this is not the first time i noticed problems with this transmission. i have brought this car back to the dealer twice because of the transmission and twice they have made repairs on the transmission. i have only owned this car since october 2018. both times i had it back at the dealer they claim to have changed some module in the transmission but yet i go to my fordpass account and these repairs have yet to be documented by the ford dealer. i find this rather strange like they know i need a new transmission but won't replace it. there have been more times that i was driving down the road and when i accelerated and the engine just revved up but my car wouldn't go any faster. i find all of the situations i have been in with this car to be very dangerous and i am lucky there hasn't been a major accident. i haven't even owned this car a year and i owe more on it than what it's even worth. i can't afford to just go buy another car and it doesn't seem like the ford dealer wants to do anything about how dangerous it is. please help me!

The car vibrated vigorously when accelerates from a complete stop, followed by sudden accelerations when switching gears. the car had only 28k miles on it when this happened.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while the vehicle accelerated, it shuddered without warning and then returned to normal after a couple of seconds. the vehicle was taken to paris ford-lincoln (2020 ne loop 286, paris, tx 75460, (903) 784-2566) where it was diagnosed, but the failure could not be duplicated. the vehicle was not repaired and the failure recurred multiple times. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was test driven. the mechanic confirmed that the vehicle vibrated and shuddered while accelerating. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign numbers: 13v523000 (power train) and 19v515000 (fuel system, gasoline). the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 138,000.

Have been under a recall regarding the transmition on my 2012 ford focus for 7 years. have been very patient dealing with the dealership. they've told me that the parts on back order, did a computer fix multiple times and told me to drive the car as is... stopped answering my calls etc... called ford customer service multiple times and been told to go back to the dealership... called ford customer service again today only to be told they will not stand behind their contracted dealer... i've been in multiple times too have it fixed and its been worse after each time. it's stuttering while driving, bunny hopping while accelerating, making grinding noises, it's almost impossible to drive up a steep hill due to this, is almost impossible to get into a freeway and get up to speed quickly enough to keep from getting hit. i've been rear ended due to the stutter... its not safe. now after contacting ford and the dealership for the hundredth time i'm told there's nothing they will do to fix this problem.

My car shutters and shakes when i'm accelerating. going from a dead stop is the worst. i've taken my car in and there is no resolution as of today. ford knows of all of these issues and knew of them before my car was manufactured. my extended warranty runs out next month and will be on the hook for any future damages to my car.

My 2012 ford focus has 125,000 miles. the transmission stopped working as my wife was pulling into our driveway and it gave the error codes p2832 and p287b. it will move a little, but makes a loud grinding noise. these error codes are supposed to be covered by tsb 16-0044. i took it to garber ford in green cove springs, fl. yesterday they told me it will require a new transmission and will cost me over $5,000. if this is a known problem item from ford, why isn't ford replacing it? i cannot afford a new trans, and i cannot get sell the car as it now doesn't run and i still owe $4,000 on it.

My 2012 ford focus has had a transmission recall 3 times that i know of since i purchased it in 2012. 2 months after having the car it started stalling, stuttering and not accelerating. it was very scary to drive. i had the car serviced by the dealership 3 times for the same problem. why are they selling these cars knowing the transmission is bad. ive been having the same problem with this car for 7 years. it always seems like it is going to cut off while you are driving, it is not safe to drive because it is so unpredictable. my dealerdhip had a 30 day wait time to see my car. they are so busy repairing recalls. so now i have to rent a car while my car sits and wait. the car is paid off and i'm still giving ford money to drive this car. it's over 100,000 miles on it and 7 years old. the repairs should be free since i've had the luxury of being inconvenienced over the past 7 years. now here it is 2019 and i am having the exact same problem with this little ford focus of mine. people say that ford stands for fix.or.repair.daily..... i now believe them. i want does to repair this problem under the extended warranty they gave me. i am so frustrated right now. i asked service to diagnose my car's problem and they say sure that will cost you $125 and then says we are the cheapest in town to diagnose. i said no thank you! i went to an auto parts store to have them diagnose my problem and it was free and it gave me a transmission friction a stuck on code p07a3. that is a power train problem. the transmission has issues. i purchased a lemon that does not have enough power to make lemonade😣😭😢😤😤😤😤😠😠.

I have a 2012 ford focus that has had numerous problems with the clutch/transmission. i've had this issue replaced numerous times, and i am still experiencing the same problem with the car. the car constantly shutters upon accelerating, hesitates while driving after stopping at a red light/stop sign and had a complete transmission malfunction as well. i have had this issue occur about 9 times with this car since buying it in 2012. needless to say that i no longer feel safe driving this car anymore, and it makes me sick seeing that ford won't stand behind their product.

Vehicle is shuddering, stalling, and refusing to accelerate under power

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving various speeds, the vehicle jerked, lunged forward, and lost power without warning. the contact exited the vehicle and pushed it over to the shoulder of the road. the contact attempted to restart the vehicle and it turned on, but was towed by aaa to butler county ford (400 s main st, butler, pa 16001, (724) 287-2766). the dealer diagnosed that the control module failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case number: cas22179536. the manufacturer also extended the warranties until 150,000 miles. the failure mileage was approximately 91,000.

Transmission bolts foward and also lunges at low speed . was parking on a street almost hit a car because it bolted foward

My 2012 ford focus with dual clutch, dps-6 transmission has on multiple occasions unclutched the transmission while attempting to accelerate from a stop to make a left turn across a busy road. the unexpected lack of acceleration due to the transmission failing to transmit power to the wheels has nearly caused my wife and i to be hit by oncoming traffic despite starting the turn with adequate room to cross traffic and accelerate. thankfully, adequate space and reaction by oncoming drivers has prevented a wreck. ford has, on multiple occasions, flashed the computer and replaced parts and did extend the warranty on the transmission slightly. however, the transmission is slightly now out of warranty and continues to have the same problems with failing to accelerate and then violently slamming into gear. ford has refused to cover further repair of the defective transmission despite clear evidence of the continued defectiveness of the transmission.

2012 ford focus. consumer writes in regards to issues with transmission. *ld the consumer stated days after having the recall repair 19s22 completed the vehicle began to shudder. *js

My wife purchased her focus new in 2012. we have raised concerns about transmission issues ever since, always being told there was nothing wrong. finally, the transmission went out. we had it towed to the dealership and have been told that our car doesn't qualify for the extended warranty because something broke before the covered piece. while thinking over our options, an article came out in the detroit free press related to this very issue. the dealership has asked their local rep to get ahold of me. he has not and is now ignoring voicemail and email messages from the dealership. i have called ford directly and was told i would get a call back. i have not heard from them after 2 attempts.
