Problems with 2012 Ford Focus ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

On average, the 2012 Ford Focus starts to “feel” problems with the ELECTRICAL SYSTEM and its various aspects after 65 604 miles.

Components Affected by ELECTRICAL SYSTEM Issues

We have classified the 276 complaints from 2012 Ford Focus about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.

Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2012 Ford Focus

My first encounter started in march with a warning condition indicating a default in my steering assistance only when i would turn on the ignition, i called ford dealership and was told it would go away by turning of the ignition and turning it back on.,and it did go away. now in august, i was driving on freeway and the warning light came on again while driving and the steering wheel became very hard to steer, i was able to make it to a safe stop on the shoulder of the highway. that was the most scariest for me while on the highway. god was with me.. *tr

Our 2012 ford focus shut off at 70 mph, while simultaneously losing pwr str, pwr brk, & illuminating all inst panel icons as in (key on-eng off). then while coasting to complete stop, car returned to normal ops & was able to drive away, never touching the ign key switch. ford dealer cleared multiple codes, which they would not reveal. they did tell me there was a pcm communication failure in history, but could not find any reason for it. they also performed multipoint inspection, with no issues found. 1 month prior to incident the automatic clutch-oil seal recall was performed under warranty. (clutch & inner input shaft seal was replaced). car has been ok since. this incident occurred while driving in rain. *tr

Driver's side front power window motor failed and needed to be replaced. *tr

While driving my 2012 - manual 5 speed ford focus down the highway the car lost power. there was no indication that anything was wrong, but all of a sudden while in 5th gear at 70mph the car had no power to propel itself forward, at the same time the radio/entertainment system malfunctioned and turned off. luckily, i was able to make it over to the shoulder and roll to a stop without an incident. turned the car back on and there was very little power getting to the car, maxing out a speed of 50mph on the freeway so as not to stall again, made for a scary ride home. this is the 3rd time this has happened since owning the car, which i purchased brand new and now has 49,000 miles on the odometer. the previous 2 times, i took it to a dealer to diagnose the problem, but they said that there is nothing that they can find wrong with it. now i am active on a ford focus forum because it seems that i am not the only person out there with this issue. ford needs to get it together before they have an injury lawsuit on their hands. *tr

Windshield wipers stopped working during heavy downpour. it was not fuses. *tr

Without warning, (no lights on dash-board - no unusual noises - no problems starting etc), there were no gears and i was left in neutral. it required coming to a stop, putting it into park and starting again to limp along to get to a safe point to park the car and call for help. luckily i was not yet onto the freeway! the ford dealership mechanic was able to replicate these circumstances and he too found himself without gears; he was on the freeway on-ramp and was lucky to not be hit. i can only imagine how dangerous this is if you are in 4 lanes of traffic going 60 mph!!! notwithstanding the severity of this "module" defect, the problem according to ford does not come under the 'transmission recall' and my car is 3,500 miles over the magical 60,000 power-train recall. i am stuck with a $1,500 bill and the fear that it might happen again; if not to me, someone else with this model/year focus. *tr

i got in car to go to the store put on seat belt started car put car into drive 1/4 mile down the road from leaving my driveway doors unlocked and opened i had to stop immediately and they would not close. left front drivers door and right rear passenger door. my car was towed to dealer and diagnostic test done and inspections by certified mechanics. they said door latches wont catch or engage to keep doors closed no check engine light came on only blinking display that doors are open only after i was completely stopped and in park. *tr

I have recently had an ongoing problem where my dash lights turn off, head lights turn off, radio turn off, and a message comes on the dashboard saying "hill start assist unavailable". the radio turns back on after about 20 seconds. the dangerous part is when the speedometer shuts off and i cannot tell how fast i am going. i have contact the dealer about this problem, and taken the car in for service on this and they claim there is nothing wrong with the car. i already had a problem with my transmission where i had a full replacement and they are refusing to take any action regarding this problem. this vehicle is unsafe for anyone to drive until they figure this out. i dont know who else to contact regarding this issue since i have gone to ford, the dealers, as well as independent shops and they all claim they cant find a problem. *js

While driving windshield wipers started. at first it was fast, then slowed down. wipers continued for almost an hour after turning off engine. later when clicking alarm remote to enter door, wipers started going again, varying speeds as time went on. i needed to pull the relay from the engine compartment for the wipers to stop. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that the vehicle accelerated slowly on occasion. other times, the rpms would race and the vehicle would jerk forward. the dealer stated that the body control module needed to be replaced. the contact stated that the dealer was not able to reprogram the computer to install the new part and had to re-install the old part. the manufacturer was notified and the vehicle was taken to the dealer a fourth time to have the new part installed. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the sensors intermittently illuminated for the brake assist and parking aide. in addition, while making a right or left turn, the steering wheel locked intermittently more than once. the contact also stated that the clock intermittently shorted out and the time display was incorrect. the dealer provided an interim remedy and suggested that the contact turn off the gps. the interim fix remedied the failure as long as the contact used the feature to disable the gps auto clock manually each time. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 3,000.

Driving up light incline on paved highway when traction control light flashes indicating a loss of traction. seconds later car loses response to gas pedal, flashes "transmission system failure. service immediately." after pulling over away from traffic and powering off then 30 second wait and on warning is gone and functions are restored. a week later problem comes up again, this time on interstate going 70mph. cruise control is shut off automatically, no power to gas pedal, traction warning comes on, and same transmission warning flashes. goes away in a second or two. pull over as safely as i can while cutting off a semi-truck, power car off and on, all systems normal. four days later pull out of parking spot with a hesitation of vehicle to start, then a vibrating in reverse. drive around lot to exit, pull onto main road and same warnings/problems as usual happen. now blocking traffic perpendicular to flow. check engine light comes on, put car into park, turn off, and back on. try to shift into drive. won't budge. turn off and on again. try to shift again. no luck. one more time, wait a few seconds, then again. car powers on drives to another location with check engine light on and then to dealer with no further issues. dealer inspects, finds faulty tcm. directly attributes this to manufacture defect and not to user error. *tr

During times of frequent stop and go (accelerating and de-accelerating) the car shudders and acts like it is going to stall. it does not accelerate or de-accelerate properly sometimes. i did not notice until about 40,000 miles and have had this problem ever since. some model of ford focuses are under recall, however when i went to the dealer they said my car specifically was not being recalled yet it was exhibiting the same issues.

My car was in the shop about 4x's in 1 month. issue began driving about 45 mph. went to accelerate felt a sudden jerk & nothing. look down to see my drive light flashing & am steadily decreasing in speed with no way to accelerate, like in neutral. i luckily was able to get out of oncoming traffic, put the car in park which began to flash. accelerated a couple times to be sure it responded before driving but the service engine light was on. driving again, about to make a left turn, not a mile down the road, same thing happened. this time put it in park, accelerated & nothing. shut off my car to reset it & my car would not turn on. after waiting for the tow truck, the car would just not turn on, everything related to the battery would turn on but the car didn't. in the shop this 1st time a total of 3 days, still unsure about it being fixed (because they just fixed the "electrical" part, not the issue) lo & behold when i turned into my neighborhood same thing happened (drive light flashed & accelerator didn't respond). i get home to park & turn on my car, after attempting to turn it back on, nothing. another tow truck came the next morning to get it, this time my car was there 7 days. after 2 days of driving the same thing happened i was on a hill almost began rolling backwards into another car until i put it into p & pulled the e break. car went in they stated that they figured it out & i hoped 3rd x's the charm. nope, i was on a highway had to pull over away from oncoming traffic decrease the risk of me being hit. 9 days in the shop after ordering a transmission control module for my car & replacing it, it works. although i was just informed that the same thing is now happening to a friend with a 2013 ford focus. it's something that needs to be looked into because loosing the ability to accelerate in the middle of traffic is very dangerous life threatening & scary. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that the vehicle lost power and stalled on several occasions. the contact also stated that the parking assist error service required and the skid indicators illuminated. the contact was not able to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer who diagnosed that the electronic sensors needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 62,000.

The first incident occurred while in traffic on the interstate highway during rush hour evening traffic. i had to come to a stop on traffic in a construction zone due to traffic at a point where there was moving traffic in lanes on either side of my vehicle. the car was running as normal, no lights came on (nothing to alert to an issue), however, when i went to accelerate my car would not engage the transmission. it was as if my car was in park and i was revving the engine. i put my hazard lights on, called 911 to report i could not get out of my vehicle to move my car as i feared i would be hit since it was rush hour traffic and could not even open my door. i shut my engine off, waited a few minutes, and tried again. the car still would not move. after being stopped and unable to move for approximately 20 minutes, the transmission seemed to re-engage and i was able to get my car off the highway. i had the car taken to the dealer as it was still under warranty. i was told that they could not duplicate the problem after having my car for a week. as soon as i got my car back, i drove approximately 10-15 miles, and this same issue occurred again, but thankfully i was close to home and not in any heavy traffic as i was with the first incident. again, it was arranged to take my car to the dealer (the dealer had my car from approximately 7/11/14 to 8/1/14). again, i was told they could not duplicate the problem. within 2 days of having the car returned to me, i drove approximately 20-30 total miles, and my car stopped on another highly traveled road, but thankfully while in a turn lane. a stranger helped me push my car to a nearby gas station where it had to be left until it could be towed back to the dealer. *tr

The steering wheel would not move, there is an error message, steering assist fault. it happened before, but i turned the car off and back on again and it would turn. before this incident there would be times when the a/c fan would adjust itself, by going higher or lower and the radio volume would increase or decreases without any help from me. this particular time it would not move and i was forced to leave it in a parking garage overnight. while attempting to get it to work by turning the off and on the brakes went all the way to the floor, suggesting the would not work properly if i were driving the car. well, the car shut completely down and started to try to turn itself on without the key being in the ignition. after which it would not start at all. i had it towed in and of course it is no longer under warranty. *tr

While i am driving (this has occurred three times) the check engine light comes on and the gears keep slipping. i take it in and they reset the computer or whatever they do and it works fine right after but continues to drive like the gears are slipping. *tr

When exiting grocery store parking lot, as we pulled out into traffic, the car experience a sudden loss of acceleration/drive train power, while electrical systems started to flash, and electronic gear indicator transitioned from gear to gear. rpms, were still registering and on acceleration, drive train was unresponsive. this happened all while in traffic, when oncoming vehicles were approaching. we turned on hazard lights and moved to the road shoulder. powered off car for a minute, then restarted. car started but still experienced severe hesitation on acceleration, and seemed as if it was struggling to stay on. pulled onto a side street to get out of traffic, then after turning car off, it would not turn back on. after approx. 10 minutes, tried to turn on car again, and it started. was able to carefully drive car home, however check engine light has now been illuminated. this will be the 5th instance (all instances documented by dealer, and serviced by dealer) that the car has had this issue, and we have brought it to the attention of the dealership, with no 100% remedy being given. will be taking car in once again to dealership for service and hopefully resolution of this ongoing issue of hesitation on acceleration, and total failure of drive train during vehicle operation. *tr

Car's transmission felt sluggish (hesitate to accelerate) after 15-20 minutes of low-speed driving (0-10mph) in a traffic jam. ten minutes later, engine stalled on freeway at 70mph. tachometer dropped to 0 and speedometer displayed was 0. car restarted, and continued to be driven for 15 minutes. gear disengaged when turning into a parking space, car rolled backwards. power did resume after 2 seconds while constantly giving gas. restarted the car after around 30 minutes, car stalled again few minutes later. engine would not restart instantly. only clicking noise was heard in the engine bay when turning keys. waited 10-15 minutes to restart. car accelerated to 70mph before stalling again after 1-2 minutes. gear indicator was flashing. when the car stalled, engine raved with lost of power for 1-2 seconds. car felt like in neutral even shifter was in drive. tachometer then dropped to 300rpm and never rav again. car was pulled over. the cycle of stalling and restart repeated 5-6 times until i arrived home. the next day car was drivable again (i only have a 5-mile commute). similar troubles occurred three weeks ago when car was totally disabled after 20-30 minutes parking lot driving. car hardly restart and refuse to go into gear. gear indicator constantly blinked. i previously thought the issues were related to the usage of s gate, where it happened for two instance. there are 3 occurrences of similar troubles. first time was about a month ago when car refused to start, but it was perfectly drivable again after being cool down for a night. towed to dealer but problem could not be duplicated. the reason that prompts me to write this report is due the lost of power on freeway which i believe is a safety related issue. also, there doesn't seem to be a trouble code in the computer, which makes it hard for dealers to diagnose the problem. *tr

Driving down highway, car lost power, the check engine light and the traction control light came on. would not accelerate, brakes would not function properly to stop. when i finally got the car stopped in a parking lot next to my place of business, the car would not start up again, and when it did, it would not go into any gear. sat in the parking lot for 30 minutes trying to get the car to start up and go into gear. when it finally did go into gear, i got it to my place of business 2 blocks down and parked it. i am afraid to drive the car as it is a major safety issue. there have been recalls on the electric version of this car, but not the gasoline versions. this needs to be a recall on all of these models as there are several hundred complaints online about the same issue. ford will not do anything about these issues unless the car is taken to one of their dealerships, which in past experience, they don't do anything at the dealership except overcharge for diagnosing the car, and for them to tell you nothing is wrong with it and that they know there are issues with the cars, but they do not have a fix for them and they can change the parts, however that will not solve the problem and it will happen again. i have been told this by the manager at a dealership and he has stated there is nothing he can do to change the situation. this is a major safety issue and someone needs to look into ford for the same issues gm is having with their small cars. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that while attempting to accelerate, the vehicle lost power. the contact mentioned that the check engine and the gear switch warning lights illuminated. the door chime sounded and the vehicle was able to restart approximately 15 minutes later. the failure recurred on two other occasions. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where it was diagnosed that the computer failed. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure and current mileage was 53,000.

I have a ford focus 2012 se with winter and comfort packages. my vehicle suddenly swapped up from 79 mph to 81 mph when i pressed the down button to slow the car. *tr

The vehicle would not start; ford had the car for 17 days before they decided it was the transmission control module; they charged us in excess of $1400; we have had the vehicle in for service many times over the past 2+ years for navigation system freeze ups and noise/vibrations in the front end. *tr

Since purchasing my focus in november of 2013, i have had several issues with what appears to be the transmission that have caused me to fear for my safety as they have resulted in multiple near-accidents. i had the car looked at within the first several months of ownership and nothing was found, i then took the car back in when symptoms persisted and got the clutch replaced within roughly a year of buying. the symptoms subsided for a while, but have returned and are still an issue to date. issues are detailed below: the car often chugs when in motion, especially during acceleration from a stopped position. there have been numerous occasions where the vehicle will intermittently and unpredictably refuse to accelerate in a normal fashion. this happens both while moving around 20-40mph and also when coming from a stopped position - say waiting at a red light or when waiting to turn left at a busy city intersection. this is terrifying as i never know when the car will accelerate normally and when it will not - at least twice in recent history i have attempted to make a left turn from a stopped position, had plenty of time to get through the intersection, but the car struggled and finally made it through too close for comfort. other times, the rpms seem to rev up for no reason, and the car accelerates very quickly though the pressure on the pedal has not changed. though the has happened with less frequency, it is almost more frightening as i feel like i am not in control of the vehicles speed while in traffic. typically this happens when coming from a stopped position as well. additional issues i've had include it rolling backward on small inclines - sometimes when brake pedal is sufficiently depressed and even momentarily when in drive and gas pedal depressed. *tr

This car has been the shop 4 times for the same problem. the car randomly does not start for a period of time, absolutely no rhyme or reason. it does start eventually. everything electrical comes on, interior lights, a/c, heater, radio, exterior lights, just no engine. the problem only occurs after being driven. in other words, it never happens first thing in the morning after sitting all night, it never happens after a full work day (sitting 8 hours). the longest period of time it has set and still not started is about 3 hours. the problem also never occurred until they had to replace the transmission. *tr

Car sitting in driveway. went to start would not even turn over. car completely locked out. had it towed to winner ford in dover delaware. car is not even 3 years old spent over $700 in repair work. then on 4/14/14 car broke down again in driveway again. had it towed to winner ford in dover delaware. now the dealership replace the battery said it was completely dead. the battery is now even 3 years old! i am very fustrated and winner ford would not provide me with any credit or reimbusement of my expenses. they kept using the car is out of warrenty. i am a first time by of ford products will not buy another ford product or use a ford product even if it was given to me for free. quality of their cars is awfull and the customer service at the dealership is even worse.kept hiding behind the warrenty terms. *tr

While merging onto the freeway my car would not accelerate. i pushed the gas pedal to the floor and the rpms shot up but car would not accelerate. finally after almost being hit by other cars it shot off like a rocket. after multiple incidents of jerking and not able to accelerate randomly i took it to ford and the clutch was replaced in april 2014. not long after, it started doing the same thing except worse. i took it back to ford and was told the tranny test results came back normal and that a motor mount was missing or loose. they kept it for 3 days to fix the motor mount. the car is now worse and today the check engine light came on and car had very little power. going to take it back to ford and hopefully they will fix it this time. my gas mileage is only 20.1 mpg. another problem was that my entire sync system went out and had to be replaced in august 2014, costing me $1093.00. it started messing up by having a very loud popping/crackling noise that would start randomly even when car was off. it was very scary when it would suddenly start making the loud noise while i was driving and almost caused me to wreck at one point. *tr

The passenger front window stopped working and i'm afraid there is an electrical short.

My passenger side window started having issues with not wanting to go back up after being rolled down. then both of my rear windows & my drivers side door started doing the same thing and now neither of my front windows will roll down at all. this started just after my warranty expired and makes no sense considering it is garage kept and driven by 1 person. i hardly ever used any other window beside the driver side window so it makes no sense that all the other windows have had issues with not wanting to work properly before the drivers side did. also my car has had a recall on it for almost 2 years and they still say the part is unavailable as of today. i am worried for my safety with the recall and also wondering if that issue doesn't have something to do with my windows working & not working sporadically

Driver window was slow to go up and down then finally quit working all together. took it to dealership in tallassee alabama. ben atkinson ford which is now tallassee auto. i was told it would cost me $275. to have it fixed.

Alarm system and horn completely quit working- now i have to pay to have it repaired. a few months ago the window motor would not work- electrical problems with car. *tr

We took our car in yesterday because the engine kept lurching and stalling. they said it was the power train, and that it was a problem with the computer. the berge ford dealership reprogrammed the computer, and today when i got in the car the radio was on. i just unlocked it and opened the door, and the radio came on. the key was not in the car at all, and the only thing i did was unlock it with the remote and open the door. i did not have this problem prior to them "reprogramming" it to fix the power train/transmission problem. then when i started to drive it the engine seemed sluggish and it seemed to be lurching again, but not stopping for an instant like before. so i went from having transmission/power train problems, and a seat belt problem to having them both with a computer problem added in... i'm not a computer engineer, but when a piece of equipment has hardware problems it would make sense to replace or fix the hardware instead of reprogramming the software. i'll be taking it back in, and while the computer is out of warranty i think i should be able to get them to look at it and fix it without charging me because they caused the problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that the plastic glaze on the windshield separated from the glass, which caused poor visibility. also, while accelerating from a stop, the vehicle hesitated and made a bucking motion. the dealer stated that the computer needed to be recalibrated. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 27,000.

I have a ford focus bev ( battery electric vehicle), 2012. i came out from work and unplugged my car from the charging post and got into it as usual to go home. i pressed the start button and a mechanical warning window came up on the dash. i closed it and the "stop safely now" message came on. i closed it and the first message came back again. this went on for several cycles until i hit the start button again. i tried the start button again, and the same thing happened. i plugged it back in, unplugged it and tried again. same thing. i called the dealer, the lady there called roadside assistance for me. they sent a truck to tow it to a closer dealer, where it currently sits. initial diagnostics are not showing a cause. i will learn more on monday. this is apparently a common problem according to the internet. *tr

This car has been a lemon. ford has attempted to "fix" the repeated issue i am having with this car stalling out unexpectedly due to transmission failure. ford replaced the tcm but the car still is unreliable. the service advisor at the o'meara ford in colorado told me that this car is a lemon and that he has not seen a product from ford this bad in many years. he also said that he has advised his family to not ride or drive one of these cars as they are unsafe and dangerous! this car has stalled out while i am trying to make a left turn, in the middle of the highway, and in many situations that have compromised my safety and the safety of my fellow motorists. i feel that ford needs to buy this car back and replace it as it is clear that this car can not be fixed in any lasting way. i ask nhtsa to please step in and investigate these dangerous cars before someone gets killed! i absolutely hate my ford and will not by another.

While driving approx 30 miles per hour on a b road, just after turning right the car displayed a "stop safely now" warning and the car lost all power to the drive train and the car literally stopped moving. luckily, there was no one behind me when the fault occurred. i power cycled the car and i was able to drive away after a few minutes. i have never had an issue with the car until last night.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that the vehicle would accelerate or decelerate without warning. when the contact attempted to accelerate from a stop, the vehicle sputtered. the dealer diagnosed that the transmission and the computer chip for the transmission failed. the computer chip needed to be reprogrammed and the clutch needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired a total of three times; however, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 61,312.

As i was driving all of a sudden a display stating "stop safely now" came on. i pulled over and the car would not go any further. i had to completely turn it off, open and close the door, and restart it to make it go again. it has happened 3 times now in the past few weeks. *tr

I turn the key and the focus doesn't start. at first the dealer said the problem was with the key - they were receiving an error message. the second time, the problem was with the part that read the key and they replaced it. the third time they said they didn't know what the problem was. sometimes i can hold the key 2-4 seconds and the focus will start. other times after holding the key a few seconds, i release the key and the focus starts. *tr

While driving through uptown charlotte, the car gave a "stop safely now" alert and the car lost power. it coasted enough to roll to the right lane and then died. i could not get the warning flashers to work. i tried for about 7 minutes to get the car to turn off, every combination i knew. after that, the car 'reset' and i was able to get it to start. i drove away as if nothing happened. it hasn't happened since. it's not cool to have the car quit in traffic like that. i think the battery control computer picked up a radio frequency interference. *tr

This is regarding ford focus electric 2012. i was pulling out of my office parking lot and driving at about 5 mph. i got the 'stop safely now' warning and within a few seconds the car stopped and i could not drive any more. fortunately, it was the internal street and around 3 pm when the traffic is very low. i am glad this incident did not happen on the freeway in the left lane (carpool lane in california). i was able to restart the car and drove straight to the dealer(fremont ford) but they did not have trained ev technicians to look at the car. asked me to bring the car back on monday(8/19/20013). now the car is at the dealer. this is second time i have encountered this issue with this car. the first time i had was when i was pulling the car out of my garage at home. ford even applied major software updates on my car in july but looks like the issue is still recurring. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, the stop safely now warning light illuminated as the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was taken to dealer where it was found that the high voltage cable had failed. the vehicle was repaired. the contact also mentioned that the failure recurred several times. the manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was 7,500.

Our 2012 ford focus electric totally shutdown after receiving the stop safely now warning alert. car shut down in traffic within 30 seconds of receiving the warning. we had no time to react or pull the car safely to the side of the road. this is clearly a safety issue. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. the contact stated that while parked with the keys in the ignition, the central locking system automatically locked while a child was inside the vehicle. the police were contacted for assistance however, a police report was not filed. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for a diagnostic testing where unknown repairs were made to the vehicle. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the approximate failure mileage was 34,000 and the current mileage was 35,600.

Upon making a left turn vehicle completely powered down with no warning, after a second an audible beep and "stop safely now" message appeared. vehicle had to be towed to dealership. *tr

Incidence occurred twice in 2 day period. "stop safely now" error occurred while driving the vehicle. 1st instance was while breaking as approaching a stoplight. 2nd instance was while accelerating on freeway onramp. both instances i lost all engine power and could no longer accelerate. i had to coast to a safe spot to put the car into park and turn off the vehicle but was able to restart it and drive to dealership for repair. serious safety concern with this vehicle as driver may not have ability to coast to safe stop while driving on freeway or busy traffic. after researching online, there is rampant occurrence of this exact failure being described on vehicle owner forums for ford focus electric both 2012 and 2013 models. *tr

I purchased a new 2012 ford focus ev on june 7, 2013. twice (still in june), while driving at speeds approximately 50 mph, the "stop safely now" warning came on and the vehicle lost power. both times i was able to restart the vehicle within a couple of minutes. i made sure to note all the indicators to provide the ford service techs as much information as possible. when i brought the vehicle in to be serviced, the technicians professed no knowledge of the issue and contacted ford for support. they could not repeat the issue and the car had no log of the events. finally, i was told the problem was a faulted power control module (pcm). unfortunately, this part was on a national backorder for 6 weeks (probably as a result of the known problems). after the part was finally replaced, i was told that the pcm would not program correctly, and that the transmission control module needed to be replaced. end result, i have my vehicle back, just in time to take it back for a recall. at least it hasn't stalled ??. yet. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford focus. while driving at any speed, the vehicle lost power and stalled without warning. the vehicle was able to be restarted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 41,000.

The vehicle came to a complete stop in front of the caldecott tunnel that separates the east bay to contra costa county. the vehicle stopped in the middle of traffic during commute time. also resulted in a terrible backup on the highway. spent over 3 hours dealing with this break down that included finding care for our children and finding someone to pick her up at dealership as it was after hours. *tr

During a tight turn on a bendy road going about 55 mph the vehicle lost all power. as if someone turned they key off. lights, infotainment, steering, brakes, everything was effected. luckily steering doesn't lockup on a ford focus. and can be steered but without power assist. once at a complete stop, the car could be restarted with no instrument lights on, as if nothing happened. *tr
