Problems with 2000 Ford Focus ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

Car has stalled multiple times at speed took it to the local ford dealership and they couldn't find any problems. last time it stalled my husband replaced the fuel filter and fixed the problem for 2 days and it acts like it is going to happen again.*ak

Engine stalling while driving on freeway for no reason, it happened three times since i purchased the car as new two and half years ago. first time it happens, the car was only 6 month old. i was lucky that all those three times when it stalled i didn't get into any accident but it's scary when it happened on a busy highway. i know some other focus owners had the same problems happened to them too. thanks for your time and attention.*ak

The engine hesitates, idles and fluctuates from 4000 to 5000 rpm, then drops to 0. everything on the control panel starts signaling, including the check engine light. head lights go on and off. in general, the whole electrical system of the car goes off and on; it flashes..

While moving in very heavy stop & go traffic on freeway, engine suddenly & without warning lost power & stalled. no warning lights, no engine codes. 3 occupants, a/c on, 95 degree f outside temp, 1/2 tank fuel. engine restarted after several attempts but could not develop power to accelerate. engine continually stalled. 45 minutes later after a tow to nearest ford dealership, engine started & ran normally. dealership test drove, inspected & performed diagnostic tests. found no codes, no problems.*ak

My car started by losing power and the the engine would race up in any gear. the lights on the dash would dim along with the radio and the headlights. then on oct 31 2002, the gages went crazy. i parked the car and called ford and asked if they would run a test to see what was wrong. they said i would have to pay for the test and i told them i could not afford it. since then i only drive the car to the store about 5 miles from my house and back. now the engine is stalling again in any gear. the engine light is on. i again asked the dealership and ford if they could run the test to see what is wrong with car again they refused. i just now wrote a e-mail to ford. i just want my car that only has about 49000 miles to run. ford is offering a longer warranty on the newer focus why not offer it to us that owner the piece of junk older focus.

On a flat surface at any speed vehicles will stall ,then shut off. dealer notified. *ak

Twice, while on a trip, the engine has stalled on the highway doing 70 mph. both times the car would only do 10 to 20 mph max. with my family, on busy highways.*ak

Vehicle has stalled 3 times at 30-40 mph. after vehicle stalls, it takes up to 25 minutes to restart. dealer cannot find a cause. *ak

Car started stalling before it ran out of warranty. dealer replaced fuel pump that was all they could figure out. that lasted as long as the warranty did. i personaly replaced the fuel tank and fuel pump and fuel filters each time. the car has continued to stall sense under warranty. the dealer can't figure out the problem ,they said that they have nothing but problem with the ford focus. i've contacted ford corp. and you get no help from them. the car has stalled on several occasion as long as the car sit for a long period of time it will start and run for awhile then it will do it again. i cannot afford to take it the dealer each time to tell me nothing is wrong with it. this problem could end in an accident and possible injury. i hope this doesn't take a class action suit against ford to get this problem corrected.*ak

My car stalls for no reason!!!!!!! how irritating it is to have a car ( not even 5 years old) stall during traffic and when driving for long periods of time (30 min or more)? very!!!!!! :( my 2000 ford focus stalls no matter if i'm going 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 or even 60 miles an hour. it's scary especially when your driving on the highway at 60mph and for no reason your car loses power. can you imagine how scary it is to see the vehicle behind you still traveling at 60 while you start to slow down? this is extremely dangerous!!!!! i have had the same problem since june of 2002. the dealership acts like i don't know what i'm talking about. and i end up paying to have all kinds of diagnostics test done and no source of the problem. everyone diagnoses it differential. when is ford going to finally look into this? when someone is hurt? *ph

Six weeks previously, engine stalled on freeway. dealer said couldn't find a problem and let them know if it happened again. 5/31/02 could not get car to go; had towed to dealer. after several days they finally thought it was the air intake valve causing the problem. today i hear about the focus stalling problem possibly being caused by debris in gas tank. i am afraid to drive this car for fear it will stall again on the freeway. i was lucky the last time that i was able to coast to the shoulder and did not get into a crash. i was able to re-start the car and get it off the freeway. other continuing problems that i have had the dealer fix over 3 times each: squeaking brakes and molding around the doors falling off.

The engine stalls while driving as if it is going to shut down. the signal lights will not stop blinking when making left or right turns. this was repaired by east ford in feb 2001 and this problem is back again. i feel that these are more defects in the focus. *ak

Pe 02 040/engine stalling, after driving vehicle for a while, it started to hesitate, and lacked in acceleration when applied. vehicle been to the dealer on two occasions, and was unable to duplicate the problem. feel free to provide any further infromation.*ak

While on the highway enegine cut off and my car pulled to the right , which caused car to spin out of control and smack into wall of medium.*ak

The main concern is the engine overheating. the dashboard indicator does not show when the engine overheats. currently we are taking it back into the shop because of the smoke that come through the hood. we feel the car could catch fire at any moment and that is is undependable. it has been towed twice. we do not feel we can sell it because of all the on going defects and yet we still owe $9,000 plus to the bank on it. we feel trapped in an unsafe, undependable vehicle. the problems continue. we don't know what to do. dt

While driving the vehicle at any speed, strong chemical fumes spread through out the vehicle. the dealer has been made aware of the problem. nlm the tire rod has loosened, the battery had blown, and the engine light had stayed illuminated. scc

Engine stalls when car in extended turns (such as freeway on ramp). problem first notice when fuel indication at just under 1/4 tank. problem occurring at over 1/4 tank now.*ak

My daughter, who is the primary driver of this vehicle, reported that while driving on adams road the engine started to lose power. she pressed the accelerator but the engine continued to slow down. she then pulled the car off the main road and the engine stalled. she was able to restart the negine and proceed. the fuel tank was 1/2 full. no warning lights (ie. "check engine") were illuminated prior to the stalled engine condition. we contacted the dealer on april 18, 2002 about this problem but they indicated they could not diagnose the condition and that we "should wait for it to happen again" before bringing it in for a check. i am concerned about this incident repeating itself in a highway situation.*ak

When vehicle comes to a complete stop, it will stall out , engine check light comes on which was caused by a defect in the cylinder head. *ak

In april 2000, my car died. ford had to give me a brand new engine. now in december 2002, more car problems and they have to replace the transmission. this car is not even three years old and has too many major problems for a vehicle this new. dt

In highway traffic vehicle shutsdown unexpectedly. dealer has replaced fuel pump, and computer board. problem keeps reoccurring. please provide any further information.*ak

Vehicle was going 45mph on a bridge and stalled as vehicle was shifting to 4th gear. steering locked and brakes failed while motor shutdown. air conditioner and radio continued to work. vehicle restarted, but the engine check light came on, and vehicle stalled again. crankshaft was replaced by ford dealer. *ak *yh

This is the second failure, of the same parts. these studs failed in february of 2001. this is not exactly 12/12,000 for the warranty to cover the repair, but it is pretty darn close. i purchased an extended warranty through my credit union, they said they will not cover the repair because i added two aftermarket modifications to the engine. ford said they will not cover the repair, because the extended warranty coverage refused to fix the problem. what they keep stepping around is the fact that this same failure happened a year ago, before i made any modifications. the engine was still stock.*ak

Vehicle died. piston rings stick in valve and the shuts down. consumer has five recalls on her car. also, she had to replace head gasket. *ak consumer states that the transmission and air conditioner leaked, an o-ring was replaced in the air conditioner, however it still does not work. *slc

Ongoing issue, vehicle stalls, loss of engine power in tunrs such as highway ramps-particularly bad with 1/4 tank of gas or less, at times must coast for some distance to regain power. almost rearended on numerous occaions. vehicle has also exhibited stutter & stumles at cruising speed throughout life of vehicle. most likely fuel related issue, fuel pump replaced at around 10000, no improvement. rather than stalling in turns, engine often seems as if siezed up, tach shows aroung 900-1200rpms sensation of engine braking . big problem on cloverleafs of balt/wash area. one amongst many quality issues t. *ak
