On average, the 2011 Ford F-150 starts to “feel” problems with the VISIBILITY/WIPER and its various aspects after 67 672 miles.

Recently reported VISIBILITY/WIPER problems on 2011 Ford F-150

The rear window shattered on the passenger side of our vehicle. i cannot see out of it. the vehicle was stationary. we did not see anything happen to it (person) via our security cameras. i am worried it will shatter. this seems to be a common problem as i have conducted research on the internet.

Turned on rear power slider window defrost but defrost light would not come on. however, shortly after a loud sound like a gunshot was heard and the rear window on the passenger side was found to be shattered. temperatures were in the 30s fahrenheit at the time. called local dealer and they responded they do not replace rear windshields so it was replaced by local auto glass vendor.

Rear window shattered while using defroster . defroster turned on with remote start and rear window shattered with no contact. vehicle was in park when this happened.

While driving rear window defogger was on and the rear passenger side glass just shattered.

Rear back sliding glass 'exploded/shattered' while rear defroster was on. the external temperature was near 30f

Turned on rear defrost which i rarely ever do. driving down road a minute later and back glass shattered on passenger side. right behind where my daughters head would be if i had been taking her to school that morning. 78,000 miles on vehicle

2011 ford f-150. turned on rear window defrost couple minutes later window shattered.

I was driving home on may 17, 2019 from work. i was stopped at a stop light and heard a loud pop. the back window shattered on the passenger side of the vehicle.i had the defroster on clearing the dew and nothing else hit or struck the glass it just burst out of no where.

Rear window passenger side shattered. rear defrost would sometimes come on and sometime not. suspect the window overheated and shatteres. many of these incidents reported in us and canada.

After parking the truck for several hours at a secure police department parking lot, on my approach to the car i used the remote start and when i entered the vehicle i immediately noticed that the rear window, behind the passenger seat was shattered. inspection of the window i clear observed the bottom left of the window was a burnt mark on the outside. it's clear that the rear defrost when in remote start status malfunctioned and caused the window to crack. researched on the internet, many ford customers had the same problem

I started my truck and turned in the rear defrost. approximately 2-3 minutes after starting the vehicle and activating the rear defrost i was on the roadway when i heard a loud sound and noticed my rear passenger side window was shattered but otherwise in tact. the window fractures covered the entire window. i inspected the damage and smelled what i believe was wires overheated/burning. the temperature outside was 9 degrees at the time. i believe the rear defrost likely malfunctioned and overheated the window too quickly causing it to shatter. at the time the damage occurred i was stopped at a red light.

Heater blend door actuator commonly fails preventing defroster to operate, very common well known problem.

At approximately 8 in the morning on 12/2/2018 i was at a stop getting ready to make a left turn, i had the window defroster/heat on, as well as the rear window defroster. over the last year the rear window defroster light has illuminated intermittently but the defroster has always worked. as i started to move the vehicle, i heard a loud pop and thought someone had thrown something at my truck, but didn't see anything out of the ordinary. when i got to my destination less than 5 minutes and about a mile later, i got out and looked at the roof for any sign of something hitting the roof, when i noticed a steady trail of smoke coming from the rear window area, noticed that the rubber had melted and the passenger side rear window had shattered completely. i believe this is due to an electrical short in the rear window defroster circuit, i have since removed the fuse for the rear window defroster which disables my mirror heaters. i request that nhtsa investigates this further as there have been thousands of cases of this issue and it is a known issue and ford is aware of it. it is a safety concern as it could harm a child or someone sitting in the backseat if the glass shatters and blows out of the frame as well as scaring someone causing them to react by braking, steering, etc. and possibly causing an accident. as far as i know, ford has not issued a recall and has denied responsibility. this should be addressed and fixed free of charge on ford's behalf based on the fact that it is a known manufacturer defect.

Early one morning when it was around 27 degrees out i started my 2011 f-150 and let it run about 10 minutes to warm up. i used my remote start, which turns on the window defrosters. within 3 min of leaving for work i heard a sound similar to a breaking light bulb. once i got to work i happened to move my rear view mirror and noticed my driver side rear window ( 3 part, double pane motorized rear window with defrost) was shattered on both sides (panes) i am 1 of thousands of people who apparently have had the same issue. ford does not cover the glass on there vehicles in any way shape or form, even on there newest models, and apparently refuses to fix or rather, replace these windows when damaged by there inappropriately adjusted defroster. i believe this is a serious safety hazard. i frequently take my nephews and 2 year old niece places in this vehicle. placed in the back seat for obvious safety reason. now i dont even feel safe putting them in the truck at all. what do you think a 2 year old is going to do with tiny shards of broken glass? also take a glass mug, put it into the freezer for an hour, take it out and pour hot coffee into it. what does it do? these are common sense things.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving various speeds, a loud thumping noise was heard from the rear of the vehicle and the rear sliding windshield fractured. jacky jones ford lincoln, inc. (714 new highway 68, sweetwater, tennessee, (423) 337-5066) was made aware of the failure, but an independent mechanic repaired the vehicle. the cause of the failure was not disclosed. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 157,882.

I have 3 issues to report: 1. the oss output speed sensor manufacturer recall number 19s07 in november 2018 i was sitting at a red light i went to go when the light changed and the truck felt like it was going to stall i tried to get to the side of the road and then the truck seemed to go into gear and seemed fine no warning lights or anything 8 hours later on my way home from work the powertrain malfunction light came on wrench light i stopped and had it checked codes 0720 and 0722 came up output speed sensor i took it to my shop where they gave me the technical service bulletin and told me to take it to a ford service center which i did they ran another diagnostic and said they found the transmission lead frame faulty and charged me $1526.00 and now i find out there is a recall for this issue. 2. tsb15-0061 windshield wipers continue to operate in low intermittent when the switch is in the off position. installed new wiper/multifunction switch twice and still have the problem. 3. the same time my wipers started acting up my horn stopped working both when you push down on the horn switch on the steering column and when you go to set the alarm. i asked the service mechanics about this and i was told it could be the (bcm) body control module ford is recalling some bcm in ford f150 but doesnt show up when i put my vin number in.

I was driving when i looked in the rearview mirror and saw smoke coming from the back window. before i could pull off the side of the road the rear window shattered. the casing around the window had began melting and was dripping down the outside of the cab. rear defroster was on and nothing impacted the window

Back light (window) shatered. just sitting there.

While driving at about 35mph on my road i heard what sounded like a gunshot inside the cab and then discovered that my passenger side window literally exploded. this is a known issue and seems to be related to the rear window defrost. i called my local ford dealer and they said this is not something they will replace. i'm not alone with this issue, this is happening to many f150 owners and no one is doing anything about it!

Issue: rear power slide window heated on the way to taking my son to school this morning i had my rear glass defrost on to help reduce the fog on the glass. about 5 minutes into our drive the panel of glass right behind his head shattered (rear window, passenger panel) with a very loud and scary boom. upon pulling over and inspecting the glass both inside and out there was zero signs that anything had actually hit ht rear glass. it is still in the window and smooth in appearance from the outside, just cracked into a million small pieces. this is a major problem that ford and or their glass mfg. need to own up one. this costs us, the owners $500+ every time we have to repair this issue and eventually a child sitting in the rear is going to get glass blasted into their head. please help us and keep out children safe!! thank you

Rear right 3 piece window shattered by having the defrost on.

Rear windows equipped with defroster and rear passenger side windows with slider windows shatter when the rear defrost button is used. my vehicle has the slider window and upon replacing at safelite glass they said they see this frequent on ford trucks and that to prevent is to either not hookup defrost when window is replaced or not use the rear defrost.

About 5 minutes after turning on the rear window heater, a large bang sound was heard and the passenger side rear window panel was shattered. outside temperature was about 34f.

It was a cold morning and i switched on the rear window heat to clear the window. about 15 minutes later, as i was driving on the highway, there was a loud bang. it sounded like a gun had been discharged inside the vehicle. all dashboard indicators were in the normal range. as i left work later that day, i noticed that the passenger side of the rear window was completely shattered. all of the glass fragments had remained in the window frame. i believe that the window heat malfunctioned and caused the rear window to shatter. i researched the problem on the internet and found that this is a common problem with numerous complaints.

Driver side rear view mirror spontaneously cracked. rear defrost does not operate. repair is replacement of entire rear window "windshield" over $1000.00. side mirror heater does not operate.

Turned on the rear window defrost and the passenger side window shattered shortly thereafter while i was driving definitely a defect in the defrost mechanism

Rear window shatters after defroster goes out causing window to break apart and fall out. rear window shattered while driving 65 on highway

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving 45 mph, the rear passenger side window shattered. the contact stated that the rear defroster was activated prior to the failure occurring. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer to be diagnosed. atchinson ford (9800 belleville road, belleville, mi 48111) informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in any recalls. the manufacturer was notified and confirmed what the dealer stated. the failure mileage was approximately 70,000.

Tuned on my rear defroster and light did not come on. i pressed it a couple more times and nothing. about 10 minutes later when i was getting gas in my local city in alabama, it sounded like a gunshot went off. i look and the passenger side rear window panel has shattered. i did some research online and file hundreds of similar complaints due to a fault rear defroster. ford is willing to do nothing about it, leaving customers with the expensive bill. this should be a safety issue.

As i was driving down the highway to work at 4:45 am (and nobody else on the road), i pressed the rear defroster button to clear the frost from the windows and side view mirrors. it was about 30 degrees that morning. the defroster button did not light up. a few seconds later the light flickered. immediately following, i heard a loud bang like a gunshot. when i got to work i noted the right side of my 3-piece rear window was in place but shattered. i believe the defrosting system or rear window to be faulty. i am currently waiting to hear back from ford's customer service to see if they're going to cover it. in the meantime, the window is barely in tact. the truck had 30,700 miles on it at the time of the incident. the dealership said they have never heard of this happening. however, i learned three of my coworkers had the same experience with trucks dated 2011, 2012, and 2014. online research shows we are not the only ones. come on ford own this problem!

My 2011 f150 rear window pane broke about 1 minute after turning on the rear defrost as i was driving down my street. this needs to be recalled as it is a very dangerous situation to have a window breaking directly over the rear seats. kids and passengers are being put in a dangerous situation by entering the backseat. this is clearly a problem as others have stated. ford and my extended warranty will not cover the window unless it is diagnosed, however i have contacted 5 dealerships who said they are unable to diagnose a problem like this. i can no longer have anyone ride in my truck in the backseat.

It was 15 degrees outside. i used my electric start. let the truck warm up for about 10 minutes. went out to truck and opened the front driver door. i heard a loud noise from the back of the truck. i inspected the car and found that the back window had shattered. after doing some research online i discovered that lots of other owners are reporting this from a malfunction in the rear defrost. i was not driving and there was no other thing that could have caused my window to shatter. i live in the suburbs of minneapolis and my truck was parked in the driveway. i am just thankful this did not happen when driving down the road with my three boys. i believe ford needs to recall the rear window with slider with power defrost as this is a safety hazard.

While driving my 2011 f150 supercrew cab on a 30 degree evening, i turned on the rear defroster. within a few minutes, a passenger in the back seat heard a crackling sound and then a loud pop, the passenger side of the 3 section rear window had shattered, within a few hours the glass from this window had started to fall out and enter into the cab, and onto the seats. this happened on 12/30/2016 at approximately 6pm, speed was about 35 mph and no other traffic was on the road. *tr

Rear sliding window exploded from electric defrosters could not see out of rear window the bang was so loud i lost control for a moment there was glass everywhere in the back seat ford refuses to even look at it and the extended coverage wont cover the repair i can use the defroster when having small children in the back seats when its cold for the fear of injury to the children this is a option the cost big $$$$ and cant be used when it cold and having my grandchildren in the back seats ford needs to step up on this one its not safe for many reasons i was driving on a highway and if the children were with me it could have been deadly. *tr

Rear glass shattered due to rear defrost shorting out. started truck after some freezing rain and turned on the rear defrost. started to go down the road and about 10 mins later on the highway i hear what sounded like a shot gun blast. the glass had shattered but was still in place. i taped it up. i do not have the money to replace this. this is a design flaw that could cause a serious accident.

Rear glass window on 2011 f150 with power slider- driver side back quarter glass shattered, while driving. rear defroster was on. i have researched this issue and have seen many complaints reported online. i am glad my children weren't in the back seat at the time this happened and it stayed in the frame and did not blow out/into the rear vehicle passenger area

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. while driving approximately 5 mph, the rear driver's window shattered without warning. the dealer stated that the vehicle was no longer under warranty. the contact had the window replaced. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 83,000.

Warming my truck up to leave for work this morning. turned on windshield defroster and rear window defroster to remove heavy dew. rear defroster turned on for about 10 seconds and shut off by it self. while driving i noticed it had turned off, pushed the button again and it did not turn on. about 2 minutes later i heard a loud "pop" and looked in my rear view mirror to see that the right rear window had shattered.

After rear defrost was activated while driving to work in the morning there was a very loud bang and the drivers side rear window broke and spidered. this occurred on april 15 2016. temp was about 35 deg f. note rear window was replaced once already in 2013 for the rear defrost not working.

Rear window shattering due to rear defrost temp in the 30's, started my truck, turned on the front & rear defrost for a few minutes before leaving the driveway. heard a loud pop from behind me. my drivers side rear window was shattered. i immediately turned off the defrost, and turned off my car. good thing i hadn't put my child in the car seat before the defroster caused the glass to shatter. i never put the vehicle in gear, stayed stationary.

Rear passenger window shattered after turning on rear window defrost.

On march 24, 2016 i started my vehicle and activated rear defrost as there had been some light snow build up. within a few moments i was traveling down the road at approx 45 mph. about two minutes later i heard a loud bang that sounded like a gun shot. this was a bit startling and my reaction immediately caused me to swerve into the adjacent lane of traffic. i quickly pulled to the side of the road and noticed that the right rear window had shattered. the slider and left side did not break, only the right. this could have turned out much worse had there been a vehicle driving next to me at the time. very scary experience and potentially very dangerous.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. the contact stated while entering the vehicle and closing the front driver side door, the rear passenger side window fractured without any impact. the contact informed the dealer, who stated that the window needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

Driving at approximately 40 mph and turned on rear glass defroster. a loud bang was heard and discovered the rear passenger side glass had shattered.

I turned on the truck with the remote starter. this is apparently tied into the auto defroster on the back window. as soon as i got in the car and started to drive the back window blew out for no reason. i did a search on the web and apparently this is an extremely common problem. the noise was so loud i actually thought someone shot out my window!!

My left panel of the rear window is shattered after turning the rear defrost on. called ford, they will not replace.

Rear passenger side of rear slider window shattered when operating defroster when approx. 27 deg. f. no impact, but loud gunshot like sound and glass was simply shattered while driving. luckily the glass didn't separate as i had 3 children in rear in child seats, one rear facing. this appears to be a common problem.

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 ford f-150. the contact stated that when the vehicle was turned on and the defrost system for the rear window was activated, the rear window's electric sliding window shattered. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 56,000.

Rear defroster quit working for awhile. turned on the truck today. it was about 26f outside. i tried to turn on my rear defroster button again. it did not turn on. i was driving down the road about 35-40 mph. heard a loud bang, noticed my drivers side rear sliding window is now shattered. called the ford dealership they had no idea of this happending. called ford customer care, they had no idea of this either. it seems like everyone else on the internet knows of this issue except ford and their dealers.

Passenger side rear window exploded due to the window defroster. this seems to be common among f150's with a rear slider window. this happen on the way to work one morning. speed 35 mph on smooth pavement . there was frost on the window but the light on the defroster was not on. heard a loud bang and did not immediately notice the broken glass until later in the day when the sun defrosted that glass. no response from ford customer service
