Problems with 2010 Ford F-150 ENGINE

On average, the 2010 Ford F-150 starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 87 630 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2010 Ford F-150

While stopped at a red light waiting for the light to change vehicle died and made funny noises while attempting to start... took five tries before vehicle started.

While slowing down to turn onto a side road, vehicle died and i had to coast to a stop with no steering or brakes. vehicle started up immediately after with no stored code.

The vehicle stalled when coming to a stop and when slowing to make a sharp turn causing the engine to stop and loose braking and steering. the vehicle was taken to the ford dealer at a cost of $820.25 to replace part # 8f9z 9f472 e sensor hego, on the first visit which did not correct the problem, on the next visit to the dealer part # 8f9z 9e730 g sensor hego and part # 9l3z 9e730 g valve asy fuel vapour were replaced which corrected the problem. the vehicle stalled when approaching stop sings and when slowing to make a sharp turn on highways with heavy traffic behind my vehicle causing loss of brakes and steering. i have the invoices in my possession but am unable to upload.

I live in a metropolitan area where there is always a high volume of traffic and losing power of a vehicle is a dangerous situation. driving in 5:00 rush hour traffic and accelerating from a red light when my ford truck entered into a "limp home" mode (wrench icon and oil lamp appeared) it stalled out. i was able to coast into a parking lot even though i had no power steering or brakes. eventually, i was able to start my vehicle. my truck drove fine but now and then had a hesitation to start. about a week later, it stalled again; this time it did not start. i was a block from my office and we pushed it back. i had it towed to a local shop and was told it was the fuel pump. i work in outside sales and had to have it replaced $700. the truck drove ok for about a month, but still hesitated on starting. in june, once again it stalled. i took it back to the shop and they could find nothing wrong. july 9th, i was driving about 55 mph when i came to a signal light and stopped. the light turned green, i begin my left hand turn and the truck stalled. i had it towed to ford dealer. they are saying that now it is the fuel pump battery junction box, another $2500 and it will take after labor day before i get my truck back because there are no parts available!!! rent a car for 2 months on top of that!!!

Vehicle vibrates and hesitates to accelerate to the point where the truck engine will shut off around 1500 rpm on both highway speed and normal street speed. i took it to a local ford dealership, and they said there's nothing wrong with it or maybe they just don't know where it's coming from since the engine light is not on.

While slowing for a stop engine shut down. no engine lights or warnings were displayed. steering locked up. truck restarted with no problem. very dangerous. *tr

I was stopped at a red light when the warning chime went off and oil light came on.engine turned off, lost all power.was able to get vehicle started again.had vehicle towed to nearest ford dealership.they could not find anything wrong with vehicle, no codes.drove vehicle home approximately 14 miles, same thing happened again.vehicle has stalled four times in two days, once when trying to make a left turn.vehicle has been serviced only at ford dealerships, what they recommended to do, was done.same scenario happens, warning chime, oil light comes on, total loss of power.dealership gave me impression they never heard of this problem.searching this on the internet,i have found numerous posts of the same thing happening to other customers.bringing vehicle back to dealership, see what happens. *tr

Started driving this truck and exhaust fumes stated smelling in the truck. causing my family to seek medical attention. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving various speeds, a noise emitted from the steering wheel. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who replaced the inner and outer tie rods. the failure persisted after the repair was performed. in addition, the engine stalled and restarted on two separate occasions however, the dealer was unable to locate the problem. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 71.400. updated 7/7/15*cn updated 9/29/2017*cn

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. while driving approximately 35 mph and attempting to apply the brakes, the vehicle hesitated to stop and the power steering failed. the vehicle stalled, but was able to immediately be restarted. the failure occurred several times. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the approximate failure mileage was 49,000.

Exhaust manifolds are rusting off very bad .big flakes .i don't even drive truck in winter .i called ford and gote no help.

Engine stalls at red lights no reason. *tr

My 2010 ford f150 has approx. 30,4xx miles on it and has been maintained perfectly. in a brief summary, going in to work early (5am) potentially saved me from having a wreck to due a faulty throttle body. upon accelerating from a red light, my truck entered into a "limp home" mode (mechanic wrench icon appeared) and began to incorrectly regulate my rpms. this caused my vehicle to become nearly stranded as i was moving no faster than 10mph in a 50mph zone. i was luckily only 1/8th of a mile from work and was able to get off the street. upon leaving work, my truck was acting fine with no warning lights (not even the mechanic wrench). i then proceeded to drive it to an auto parts supplier to have a free diagnostic performed. no codes were saved or showed up. however, while driving back home, it again acted up and entered a limp mode. this time both "check engine" and "mechanic wrench" lights were on. i took my truck to the nearest dealer who then diagnose the problem as a faulty throttle body. i am quoted $881 to perform the replacement of a ~$150 part...since it is a 2010, it is out of the 3yr/36,000 bumper to bumper and ford doesn't consider the throttle body part of the drive train warranty (ford will cover the intake manifold though, a chunk of plastic that won't break)... ford has apparently had problems w/ their drive-by-wire throttle bodies, as seen through their "consumer satisfaction program 13n03" recall. this incident should definitely be investigated as i have taken proper care of my truck (that has 30,400 miles) and i am stranded in a road, often traveled by 18 wheelers, going 10mph. i am not confident in my ford truck. *tr

2010 ford f-150 5.4 ltr stalling at idle and losing control of vehicle. repairs done at local dealership including replacement of catalytic converters and o2 sensors. problem still exists almost causing several accidents. back at dealership again for review. truck is dangerous to drive. same problem can be seen all over the internet. ford needs to address this issue before someone is killed. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f150. the contacted stated that the oil light illuminated and the vehicle stalled while braking to a stop. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the technician was unable to diagnose a failure. the manufacture was contacted about this failure. the failure and the current mileage was 61,000.

Exhaust manifold studs breaking causing exhaust gas leakage 5.4l 3 valve flex-fuel on both left and right side. ford motor company declined to cover costs to repair. internet full of complaints on this problem and fomoco ignores knows design flaw.

Vehicle would stall at random while driving. mechanics at ford advised that it was relay wire or harness wires for the airbag sensors that ran through the fuel tank were corroded or shorted out. they reported that the engineers at ford made a bad call when they decided to run the wires through the fuel tank, which in turn resulted in me having to dish out 1500 bucks for the repair. this issue occurred multiple times prior to the repair on a truck with less than 53000 miles at the time, between during march or april of 2014 when i first purchased the used truck. lost all power at various speeds and on several road types including highway, highway service road, residential street and farm to market road, while going strait and during turns, after multiple events and having put less than 1000 miles on it, i took it up to ford. grateful that no accidents occured during the episodes i experienced. i was able to cometo a stop, place the truck in park and restart it. ttince the repair no issues. love the f series pick ups and have owned several over a span of 18 years and its all my dads company uses. i know its been almost 4 years since having the issue but felt like i needed to say something to at least give others a head up or warning. never set well with me. i still have the repair paperwork if needed.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. the contact stated that the accelerator pedal failed and became stuck to the floorboard. the vehicle accelerated forcefully and immediately decelerated. the mechanic and check engine indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer several times for the failure. the dealer cleaned the throttle body; however, the failure was not corrected. a diagnostic was performed, which located a failure code at the throttle body position sensor. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 75,000.

I have 2010 ford f150 fx4. i have 36000 miles on it and am the original. bought it new from dealership. today i was towing my horse trailer with 2 horses in it and came through the residential area near the barn. speed limit is 30 miles an hour and i was doing 25 and was actually braking to slow it down to 20. i heard a weird engine noise and suddenly the truck surged and took off. we hit almost 50 miles an hour in this residential 2 lane road in a matter of seconds and i was standing on the brakes with both feet. my friend in the truck was downshifting (automatic) for me in an attempt to slow engine down. we managed to get it to 2nd and with me standing on brakes we were able to keep it at 40 mph. neutral had no effect and rpms way too high for first gear-every time i slightly lifted my foot of the brakes slightly, we surged to 50 and the truck kept trying to go faster. nothing we tried could get it to stop, slow or return to normal. we tried neutral and nothing happened. it was not the floor mat or the tow feature. did not have speed control on. scariest ride of my life and with two horses behind me. i was prepared to hit a tree or rock wall as we were running out of road. i was terrified of jack knifing. we finally hit an incline for a hill and we slammed it into neutral again, pulled the emergency brake and shut off the engine when we got to the top. think my brakes completely burned out and smoke was coming from my engine. numerous people that we had terrified pulled over with us once we got the runaway truck stopped. called tow truck and had towed to dealership and will see what they say tomorrow. i shudder to think what could have happened had someone pulled onto the road in front of us or a deer stepped out. i am terrified of this truck now. *ln

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving 50 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was towed to the dealer to have a diagnostic performed. the contact was awaiting the diagnosis. the manufacturer was notified, but no response. updated 10-24-13 *bf the dealer was able to determine the problem after much checking and testing. the maf sensor was bad. there was no warning, no code thrown, and no check engine light illuminated. there was complete and instant power failure. updated 10/29/13

Vehicle stalled as if out of fuel, despite having been recently filled with gas. fuel monitoring system (tank level gage and range computer) indicated that vehicle was using fuel at much higher rate than normal. for example, normal range of this truck when 36 gallon tank is full is approximately 570 miles. after 250 miles, gauge was showing tank out of fuel and range computer was instructing me to refuel. refilling only required 15 gallons, indicating reduced tank storage capacity. after performing research via internet, suspected bent fuel pump mount due to failed tank purge valve. brought vehicle to dealer for service who found stored p-1450 code which indicated a prior failure of the fuel vent purge valve. dealer dropped the tank, removed the fuel pump assembly and verified that the mounting system for the pump assembly had been severely bent when tank collapsed under atmospheric pressure. negative gage pressure inside of tank caused plastic fuel tank to collapse, severely bending fuel pump mounting hardware which is constructed of two 3/16" diameter steel rods. apparently the purge valve failed and either there is no pressure relief system, or it failed. dealer replaced pump and purge solenoid valve at owner cost of $950+. dealer indicated that there was no liability from either dealer or manufacturer. my concerns is simple....how can the design of the fuel system allow the tank to collapse at all? my case resulted in pump hardware damage, but it seem very plausible that fuel tank damage or failure is very possible, potentially leading to spilled fuel and fire. *jb

I was coming to a complete stop at a red light and oil light illuminated and made audible beep and engine shut down. placed truck in park and restarted right up placed into drive and drove away without issue when light turned green. this is the third time this has happened always in the same way in same order complete stop oil light beep and engine shut down. the first time it happened it was brought to dealer and since no engine light was not on and no stored codes we found i was sent on my way. sine i owns own scan tools and am now out of warranty i have need to bring to dealer to waste my time when they can't diagnose until there is a recall. *tr

Truck stalls intermittently. usually it is while coming to a stop but occasionally it is while making a slow turn. this means the power steering goes as do the brakes. very scary. the engine codes have been checked and since they do not show anything the truck is considered good. yet it continues to stall. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. the contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, he depressed the accelerator pedal but the vehicle would not respond and began to shutter. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis. the technician stated that the intake valve would have to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 90,400. *tr

While decelerating 2010 ford f150 stalled (4.6l v-8). vehicle restarted in neutral, then stalled each time vehicle was put in gear. increased rpms in neutral and put vehicle in drive and drove to safe area, vehicle stalled. cleaned mass air flow and made it home. took vehicle to local dealership where vehicle was purchased and was told that because the onboard computer is not displaying a code that the truck cannot be fixed. currently i refuse to drive a vehicle that is stalling unexpectedly and subsequently losing power steering and brake assist. this vehicle is a danger and liability to any driving inside it, or near it. *tr

While breaking to make right hand turn engine stalled. first indication was truck was impossible to steer. i was able to stop truck in the middle of the intersection. at a higher speed this would have been deadly. ford dealer claimed to have never heard of the problem even though an internet search shows thousands of such incidents, many of them reported to this agency. dealer was unable to find a cause, although the manager said it was likely the throttle body but he could not replace a part under warranty unless it was positively known to be defective. i was sent on my way to risk my life in an unsafe vehicle. *tr

Exhaust manifold leaking, and could be getting into the cab.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f150. the contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact merged to the shoulder and restarted the vehicle however, the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the technician stated that the failure was not diagnosed. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised that the vehicle was not included in any recalls. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 35,000 and the current mileage was 39,000.

Vehicle engine has stopped while in motion on two separate occasions. on 5 oct 2012 while merging into traffic at about 45 mphs and once on 19 oct 2012 while coming to a stop at a red light. was unable to restart at stop light for about 2 minutes. very dangerous problem because i lost control of all power steering and braking. brought it to the dealership who stated that this is a common problem among my make and year model. dealership replaced the fuel vapor valve assembly. remains to be seen as to whether the problem is fixed or not. of course, the problem is not covered under the extended warranty. *tr

When making a left turn into oncoming traffic, the engine died which disabled the power brakes and power steering. after coming to a stop, i was able to start the engine and continue driving. i took the truck to the ford dealer and they checked the computer codes and said nothing was wrong. as a side note, nothing is wrong according to them unless the computer finds an error code. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. the contact stated that the vehicle began sparking from the undercarriage after driving over road debris. the contact exited the vehicle as the vehicle was beginning to ignite in flames. the contact was able to extinguish the fire without the assistance of the fire department. the vehicle was not repaired or inspected for the failure. the contact did not call the manufacturer. the failure mileage was 31,300. the vin was not available.

Engine stalls at low speeds causing loss of steering and braking. there was no check engine light or error code when this first occurred. after the engine had stalled for about 32-35 times, the check engine light finally came on. i took the truck to a local mechanic shop to read the code which indicated that the evap system was blocked. my dealer determined that a solenoid in the fuel evap. system had failed. as a result the fuel tank was collapsed by vacuum because there was no secondary tank vent. this is dangerous! there should be a secondary vent or a pressure/vacuum sensor to prevent the tank from being collapsed. note: the tank was collapsed so much so, as to damage the pump/level sending unit assembly. *tr

On may 8th 2012, my truck stalled while i was merging into traffic at approx. 55 mph. the vehicle was brand new when i purchased it in may of 2009 from gulf coast auto ford in angleton, texas. so, i had them tow it to their shop for repairs. the mass air flow sensor was replaced on may 9th, and i drove the vehicle until friday , may 11th, when the same problem occurred. the vehicle stalled at traffic speeds, died, and then couldn't be restarted! this second incident also resulted in my having the vehicle towed to the dealership where i am told that they can't find the problem!! it now starts after the stalling, but not until a period of hours passes. what can i do? this is a serious safety issue? ford is telling the dealership to put an on-board data recorder on my truck that they cannot even get from ford! i only have 52000 miles on this vehicle and have cared for it meticulously. *tt

This f-150 pick up truck was purchased in april 2010 as new. everything was ok until april 2012. the truck stalled without warning when it slowed down or made turns. the engine died and no power, no steering. i was able to restart it and sent the truck to the dealer shop right away. on the way to the dealer, it stalled couple of more times. luckily, no other cars were behind, otherwise i could not imagine what would happen. the dealer could not duplicate the problem or get a code. i checked online and noticed many 2010 f150 owners had same problems. some of people mentioned to change throttle body, so i told the dealer shop and got throttle body changed. during the next 2 months, it did not happen again. however, on july 5th 2012, it stalled again when i made turns in the local. i sent the truck back to the dealer shop again and they still did not know how to fix the problem, since it happened intermittent. now i am afraid of driving my truck. absolutely no drive on highways. the people have already complained the 2010 model that the trucks stalled on the highway at >65 mph. it is a severe safety issue. i am very frustrated since the truck is not living to what it is suppose to be. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. the contact stated while driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning when she applied the brakes to deactivate the cruise control. the contact mentioned that the failure intermittently occurred. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage 79,000.

Sometimes around 45 to 50 mph when accelerating, the truck does a violent hard shift. it is random when it will happen and has been happening for over a year. i have taken the truck to two different dealerships several times and they keep telling me ford is aware of it but does not have a solution. i have contacted ford directly and they just tell me to take it back to the dealership. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford f-150. while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning. at times, the vehicle would also fail to start. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer who was unable to diagnose the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired and the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 40,000.

My 2010 ford f 150 that i bought new in august of 2010 has stalled five different time over the last two years. the first time was about a month after i bought it with less than 2000 miles on it. while stopping at a red light the engine just died. the other four times was while making a left turn. when it stalls the engine rpm just goes down smoothly to zero and becomes very hard to steer and brake. this is very dangerous while making a turn across oncoming traffic which is how two of the stalls happened. the last incident happened on 11/27/2012 with only 21,000 miles on my truck. i came extremely close to hitting a dump trunk that had to swerve not to hit me. after i stop and put it back to park it starts right back up and runs fine. no engine lights and the dealer says there are no codes set. i have taken it in twice before with no help. this is an extremely dangerous safety issue that needs to be fixed. *tr updated 03/26/14
