We have classified the 86 complaints from 2004 Ford F-150 about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
I purchased a new 2004 f-150 regular cab pickup in may of 04. it has had a serious vibration since new. at first i thought it was "teething" problems, getting broken in as it were. the dealer replaced two drive shafts, a dampener and a complete rear end down to the break rotors. none of this has helped with the vibration. i took it to a second dealer after the original refused to swap the truck out as a good faith gesture. instead they wanted to "trade" the truck. i was offerd ten thousand plus less than i had purchased the truck for, less than five months earlier. the truck i wanted to "swap" for went up over six thousand more than the sticker price. the second dealer kept it more than two weeks and could not fix the issue. their service manager told me that they have had several ttrucks with the same issue and had no luck with rectifying it. the original service manager told me it was a lemon, the second service manager told me it was a lemon. neither would put it in writing, for fear of job loss. ford has been no help with the issue, after repeated phone calls and emails, nothing has been done. this is my only "reliable" vehicle. it now has @17800.0 miles on it mainly highway. the vibration is getting worse with time and milage. i feel that any thing mechanical that vibrates will eventualy break. if i was looking to buy this vehicle used and felt the vibration i would walk away from it! it is that bad. incident date approximate
When shifting gears the automatic transmission shifts very hard i understand this is due to the overdrive not operating correctly. i have had other people tell me theirs trucks (ford f150) do the same thing. is their a recall on this problem?*ak
I purchased a ford f150 , thier was a vibriation in steering ,called sale's man and informed him of problem .we set up a service to balance tire's,this solved steering vibration, but caused vibration in rearend .called service to have my truck inspected ,upon inspection and tsb a vibration dampner was installed along with rebuilding rearend.after receiving my truck back ,still had vibration between 40 and 50 mph took back to servjce they replaced rearend, driveshaft ,carrierbarring ,drove fine for two day's then vibration was back . upon visiually inspecting the work , i noticed rearend was sitting about 1 inch farther to the right , i now am getting ready to take back to service to have work performed again.i have 5,161 mile's on my truck, rearend was first worked on before 3000 mile's and first oil change.vibration persists.*ak
The vehicle was parked in our driveway and left running. we had 3 coolers in the back seat, so we left it running with the air on. we had driven approximately 300 miles total that day with the air conditioning on high. we unloaded the coolers 1 at a time. this took approximately 30 minutes. we were standing in our kitchen when all of a sudden something smashed into the house and then we see our vehicle "driving" by the window up our driveway. it slid along the house and hit the garage (garage is detached). my husband jumped in the vehicle and put it in reverse and turned it off before it went through the garage. it had hit the center pole, and was stopped by that. there was no one outside when this occurred. we contacted the ford dealer and were told it was impossible for the vehicle to come out of park by itself. i have been researching this, and found that ford has had this problem in the past, so i think it is possible. there is no other explanation for this happening. there was no one around outside, and we were in the house. the vehicle had been sitting in the driveway for over 30 minutes and we had been in it 4 different times (in the back seat) unloading stuff, so there is no way it was not in park. we tested this too, if you leave it in drive, as soon as you step off the brake it rolls forward right away. we also do not believe it was a "prank" by anyone, as there was no one around outside and my husbands wallet was on the dash and my purse was in the passanger seat and both were not touched. i am very concerned that there is something wrong with the vehicle, but like i said they keep insisting it isn't possible. which is not true, as i see they have had this problem in the past. i'm not sure what else i can do at this point since the ford dealer won't even acknowledge that this could be a problem. *ak
The brakes began to shimmy and shutter and there was vibration from the rear when driving. *nm
The brakes began to shimmy and shutter and there was vibration from the rear when driving. *nm
Transmission slipped while driving across an intersection. consumer was stuck in the middle to the road. when accelerating it shifted out of gear. metal was found in the transmission. ford said send it back to manufacturer. *ak *nm
Ford f150 ex cab 2 wheel drive at 1400 miles loud noise from rear end during turns or acceleration. dealer replaced parts in differential. since dealer fix, loud "humming" noise from rear end over 35 mph. vibration from rear end while going 40 mph+. *jb
Consumer noticed that after the windshield wipers went off the front windshield became blurry. this caused poor visibility to the driver. vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic replaced the windshield three times. however, the problem recurred. *ak consumer also had concern with vibration under the vehicle. dealer found that the vibration is coming from the drivershaft, which was replaced by the dealer. *la
The truck has had multiple vibration at varying speeds but mostly at highway speeds since it was bought. the f150 has been in many times with many parts replaced, vibrations seem to be worse now than before. i tried factory buyback with fords board but they seem to think it is fixed, i have ask them to drive the truck again like the dealership did to verify the vibrations. they seem uninterested in my problem and they have not fixed a [xxx] thing since the board decision that it is fixed but it is worse and i told them it was worse personally, the truck is a pile of poop and ford knows it but because many of these trucks have the problems they are not willing to fix the problem. *ak information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Tailgate straps are the same length, but when you put pressure on the tailgate, only the lh tailgate strap supports the tailgate. the truck has vibration and steering wheel nibble problems. they have balanced the tires 4 times, replaced the tires. the fse from ford took the vehicle for a ride and said it needs a new driveshaft. the brake dust is a big problem. you need to wash the wheels daily. ford now has updated pads. i hope they replace them under warranty. two of the rotors are also grooved. the truck has 3000 miles on it. it has been in 5+ times now! the ac unit only had 22 ounces of fliud in it. it is supposed to have 30+. my air was verified to be 8-10 degrees warmer than spec. the gas door (spring) broke. the paint on the hood is flawed. it didn't get fully sprayed on the right front of the hood. both sides of the rear diff. are wet. something is leaking. the seatbelt stitching is coming apart.*ak
Developed differential chatter relatively soon after purchase. carried back to dealer and complained. they replaced the drive shaft and universals, said problem was corrected. this did not last no more than 6-8 months before chatter came back, think they also replaced differential oil also. carried back to dealer for repair, they claimed nothing was wrong. disgruntled with dealer, stated i would never purchase another ford truck again. ten years have passed, to the day almost, chatter just as bad if not worse. changed differential oil 2 times since, seems to help for a while. do not pull a boat, pull a tractor, travel trailer or do any type of construction work with this truck. it is driven to work and back and occasionally taken on highway trips to beach and back, 500 mile round trip. truck is pampered so that it will last, not driven hard well maintained, driven by adult male, basically in perfect shape other than differential. do not understand why there has not been a recall with this problem. have read about many others with the same issue. these are good trucks with one problem, the differential, that seems to me to be a factory issue. you would think ford would step-up to the plate to fix this problem. have been a ford fan for many years, own a 2013 fusion now also. would like to see action taken to remedy this problem. dates and mileage approximate. *tr
While traveling a smooth stretch of highway the truck started to vibrate. this vibration intensified until the whole truck was shaking. after stopping at a traffic light the shuddering continued until i pulled off the highway and turned around in a parking lot to go back to a nearby ford dealer. at this point it did not shake again. the ford dealer service department checked the whole truck over the next day and could not find anything loose or damaged. the shuddering felt like a universal joint gone bad. there has been no repeat of this since the truck was new. there has been an ongoing shudder while making turns from a standstill. my local mechanic put an additive in the differential and this seems to have corrected the problem. i don't know if this may be related to the original vibration. *nm
Test drove new f-150 super-crew-cab 4x2, at 60 mph experienced a terrilbe shimmy in steering wheel and bad vibration from left rear of truck. returned truck to lot and test drove new f-150 super-crew-cab 4x4, experienced the same problem at 30 mph and 60 mph. bought 4x4, salesman said the truck most likely needed wheel ballancing, or it was out of round. we made an appointment for two days later to address the shimmy/vibration problem.the mechanic had the truck on lift for twenty minutes. result, dealer has to order a part for a service bulletin that requires a vibration dampening device to be installed. this is interesting, ther is a whole lot of new f-150 trucks at this dealership. i drove two and both had same problem. they (ford), have a known service bulletin for this problem and yet as plentiful as this problem is on the lot they have to order the part, again for a know problem documentd by their bulletin that this part is required and they don't have it in stock to fix my truck or the other one i test drove on their lot or the next one and so-on and so-on.....after reading all of these complaints there had better be a fix for this or i will surely deliver my $40,000 worth of inquiries and advertisements. motor trend truck of the year...or not!!! *ak
I have an 2004 ford f-150 supercab 4x4. a few days after i bought it, it developed a slipping / shuddering problem in the rear end when you started from a stop and while turning. sunstate ford said that the slip yoke had no lubrication. so they lubed it. within 2 days the problem re-occurred. the shuddering happens hot or cold but becomes worse the more the truck is driven. when i brought it back to sunstate ford to let them try to fix it again, they say the problem is normal. i owned alot of trucks in my life and not 1 of them did this. from talking to one of the service employees i learned that there have been many complaints about this problem. additional info: truck has 4.6l engine, automatic transmission, and a 3.73 limited slip rear axle. *ak
The emission light came on. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, and consumer was told that fuel pump was defective. the gauge went out of control. after filling the tank, the gauge read empty. *ak the brake light wiring was inoperative, alignment was out, the vehicle had stuck in park, the right passenger door was inoperative, the speedometer read wrong, and the vehicle would die out. *sc
Vibration in 2004 f150 ford truck
I have a 2004 f-150 supercrew and have noticed a vibration/shudder in the rear end between speeds of 25-45 mph since inception. once over 50 mph it seems to disipate. also experiencing the occassional nibble at the steering wheel. i was planning on taking it in but i don't think i'll waste my time since ford hasn't been able to make an exact determination of its cause according to the other complaints i've read on your site. love the truck-hate the shudder/vibration!!!
Rear end differentials make a loud noise when driving at 50+ mph.
While driving vehicle stopped accelerating. vehicle was towed to the dealership, who indicated that automatic transmission line broke. dealership repaired the line. a month later, the problem recurred. *ak dealer also replaced fuse for the back-up sensor. also, vehicle's tail lights doesn't work. *ak
I have a 2004 f-150 (extended cab). while taking off, turning left or right- you will feel a vibration in the rear. this developed approx. 1 month after receiving the new truck. i have returned the vehicle to my service department, and the service manager felt the vibration as well. he ordered a whole new rear axle assembly, and this was replaced. he explained this problem was due to when turning- one wheel is moving faster than the other, which sometimes causes this vibration if it was not properly lubricated. i felt the vibration more when the vehicle was cold, and the axle was not warm. after the first repair, the new axle worked fine- but the problem has returned- approx. 1 month later. i only have 6500 miles on the truck, and this will be it's 3rd rear axle. if any one else is experiencing this, my vehicle's rear end was replaced, and will need to be repaired again. *jb
Purchased new fx4 02/04. noticed terrible vibration, occasional hesitation, and transmission slipage. took to dealer 7 times, various parts replaced. problems not fixed. they finally said they knew about the problem but it couldn't be fixed. *jb
New 2004 f-150 with 4x4 automatic transmission. vehicle in drive position pointed uphill on grades greater than 20 degree will roll backwards ( as if in neutral) . transmission will not hold vehicle in place! same results in d2,d1, and reverse. seen by dealer and confirmed to be "normal" condition. but no where in the owners manual is this condition stated. tested 4 other vehicles, same condition resulted. if this is in fact "normal" it needs to be in the owners manual to warn consumers! *cb
I purchased a ford f150 new in january of 2004. on many occasions, when attempting to merge into traffic, pass another vehicle, etc., the transmission feels like it slips into neutral. the engine speed increases but the vehicle does not accelerate. this has resulted in a few near-misses when i merged into freeway traffic and have nearly been hit by oncoming traffic. the service rep at my dealership says that he can't duplicate the problem. this is very annoying and very dangerous.*ak
At speeds of 52, 54 mph the rear end makes a "wining noise" like the pinion gear is bad. took truck in for serivce to dealership and they said ford says the noise is normal engnieering. i don't agree and am very annoid with the dealer and ford.
2004 ford f-150 has extremely high amount of vibration. vibration is felt throughout the entire operating range in the cab of the vehicle from the floorboard to the roof. the vibration is so bad that it will literally put your feet to sleep after about fifteen minutes and your hands begin to go numb after about thirty minutes. the truck has been in the dealership on four occasions for repairs and nothing they have done has helped the problem in the least amount.
Driveline/transmission slips and clunks when accelerating on 2004 f150 4x4. requency: intermittent rought into 2 different dealers and both said could not duplicate therefore could not fix. consequences of failure: if happens while accelerating into merge traffic or intersection could cause loss of power to vehicle. *ak
