We have classified the 62 complaints from 2002 Ford F-150 about VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL into the following categories.
I was driving and the speed would go up to 90 mph, the truck was not going the speed in reality. then the rpm's would go up really high, i stopped the truck put it in park and back in drive tried to drive off. the truck then would not go over 30 mph and the gas peddle was all the way down trying to go, the engine started smoking and when i pulled over opened the hood it was smoking from the driver side upper corner of the truck. after having a mechanic look at it, he said the break pressure switch needed to be replaced because it's a hot wire and it's leaking. after checking the ford vin check it didn't say my truck was apart of the recall but they year and make and model is. i'm confused and at this point don't want to put my children in a fire ball like that if it catches on fire...

Two issues: 1] both rear doors in the extended cab (swing counterclockwise) door latches jammed preventing exiting or entry. if egress was needed quickly, it was not there. the cost to repair each was about $450. (locked up while driving) 2]speed control does not work - ford says it is a malfunctioning control that cost about $500 to replace. (when vehicle is in operation)
I was driving to the office, and approached a red light so i started slowing down. once i reached 15 mph my 2002 4.2 l f150 accelerated extremely high. i was applying the brake but the truck was still slowly moving, so with my foot still on the brake i turned into the office parking lot. i tried to put it in park but it was a struggle, i called my daughter outside when i was in the office parking lot, and she told me the rear tires were spinning. when i finally got it in park i turned the truck off. i gave it approximately one minute and turned the truck back on, and it was still accelerating extremely high so i turned the truck back off so it wouldn't damage my engine. after an hour i turned the truck back on, and the truck was back to normal. after doing a bit of research i saw tons of articles with instances similar to mine, so i disconnected the cruise control switch and took it to the nearest shop. *tr

While driving on the highway, i pushed the on button for the cruise control and pushed the set/excel button at 70 mph. after a minute or so i looked down and was going 75 and accelerating. i tapped the break which had no effect. i tapped the break several more time but the truck kept accelerating. i pushed the off button several times while continuing to pump the break. the cruise control finally went off. several miles down the road i tried to use the cruise control again with the same results. my truck is a 4.2l v6 and has had the recall taken care of several years ago. this appears to have happened to several other people and could have had a disastrous outcome. *tr

I am reporting this incident as the person who's car was affected by the fire. i parked my car next to a 2002 ford f150, and after being home for about an hour and a half, a police officer came to my door and told me that my car (vw jetta) was involved in a car fire. apparently the f150 caught fire and burned my car, a bush, and another car. the fire marshal on scene explained to me that ford had a recall on multiple vehicles that had this problem. the f150 in question is totaled and has to be towed off the property. i have since come inside and found the switchfires.com website, and clicked on the link provided below, which in turn has led to giving in my info, and discussing my dilemma. *tr

2002 ford f150 burned down
On february 26, 2010 my girlfriend and i along with our kids were driving to san diego, ca. as we were speeding up to pass a slow semi-truck my truck got stuck on throttle, i started to panic asking my girlfriend to check and see if there was a water bottle stuck underneath the break pedal, she checked, also panicking because we had our children asleep in the truck. i tried to push on the brake but it was really tough to push down on and the truck wouldn't slow down, we started to panic even more. i started driving off to the shoulder of the rode as i popped the gear into neutral and turned off the truck. i put the truck in park and turned it back on after a few minutes and the rpm's where revving at 6,000 and the break pedal was still very hard to push on. i turned the truck off again. i started pushing on the gas pedal, to see if i could loosen it, while the truck remained off. i turned it back on for the second time and it was running normal again. i hesitated put it back in drive. it seemed to be running fine so we were back on the road. my girlfriend and i were pretty shaken up until we got to our destination in san diego. this has never happened to me before. i haven't taken my truck in to get checked to see what could of caused that to happen due to financial hardship at the moment. we are constantly driving the truck every where, so i don't want this to happen again. so if there's any way that you guys can check this or find out the solution to this problem it would be greatly appreciated. *tr

Mid september 2009 the cruise control on my ford f-150 truck failed to come on. november 6, 2009 i went to winchester ford, winchester, va to see if the switch was under recall and told no. i was shown where the cruise control switch is located and told the best thing to do was unplug it if i wasn't going to pay to replace it. i purchased a new switch from the parts room when leaving the ford garage. on sunday, 11/8/2009 i unplugged the switch and found everything covered in brake fluid. i plugged the switch back in to stop any fluid from spraying out onto the engine. i will have to find someone to replace the switch because i am physically unable to do the work. *tr

Incident information during the summer, my 2002 ford f150 had a factory recall for a cruise control problem. i took it to my dealer, and had the recall repair done. on november 16, 2008 i was driving 65 mph with the cruise control activated. traffic slowed in front of me so i tried to deactivate the cruise control. it did not deactivate when i pressed the brake, so i pushed the off switch. the light indicating it was on went out, but the cruise control did not deactivate. i had to literally stand on the brake pedal to slow down, (narrowly averting a crash) and stayed on it until i was down to about 35 mph. coming to a turn-off, i was able to pull off at 35-mph, and turn the key off. upon restarting the engine, it still raced to a high rpm. i had to pull the fuse in order to drive home. i called my dealer, and was told it would cost $65 to have the problem diagnosed. i refused, and called ford motors. i was told there that if the problem is the same as the recall, there would be no charge. if it was any other problem, there would be a $65 charge. i feel that this is a recurrence of the safety problem previously encountered and that thousands could be at risk. signed. *tr
