Problems with 2017 Ford Explorer WHEELS

On average, the 2017 Ford Explorer starts to “feel” problems with the WHEELS and its various aspects after 17 201 miles.

Recently reported WHEELS problems on 2017 Ford Explorer

My 2017 ford explorer has 19,000 miles on it and has been maintained well. it was outfitted with hankook ventus s1 nobles 255/50r20 tires when we purchased it new in dec 2017. the tread has worn down to 4/32nds and is disintegrating-you can peel little bits of rubber off of them. they are all wearing evenly so it is not an issue with lack of rotation/alignment there are movies on youtube and other reviews of people complaining about this issue. hankook is also aware this is an issue and is doing a voluntary program where they will give you a prorated deal on new hankook tires. these tires need to be fully recalled and hankook needs to be forced to give people a prorated refund to purchase other brands of tires not new versions of their piece of crap product. we are needing to spend $1000 on new tires for this otherwise wonderful vehicle.

Took my vehicle to the dealer for tire problem. they informed me that i need all tires replaced. this vehicle has 27000 miles on it. the tires are rated for 50000 miles. my wife drives the car. she does not feel safe in it at all. the tires spin in wet conditions due to the abnormal wear on the tires. she also informed me that the car slide while trying to stop. she said she was within inches of hitting the car infront of her. these are the hankook noble 2 tires. hankook said they would pro rate the cost of new tires. hankook knew about this problem and let ford know this is what they would do. ford has done nothing about this issue. my lease is due in 7 months. the tires should at least last 3 years. i am at the point of telling my wife to park the vehicle and drive a different car. safety is a big factor with this issue. why is nobody worried about the issue that these tires were not replaced when the issue was found. i anyone in my family does not feel safe, we will not drive it with winter coming. sad that neither company wants to take this issue seriously. not going to get another vehicle from ford or with hankkok tires again.

Tires are deemed worn out at 16000 miles.

I took my 2017 ford explorer sport with 23,800 miles to be inspected today and it failed inspection. i was told that the tires are severely worn. i took it to a tire place and they concurred. the tires are hankook ventus s1 noble 2. there is almost no tread left and the they are scalloping and flaking pieces of rubber.

The vehicle in question is a 2017 ford explorer with hankook ventus s1noble2 front tires that are shredding both on the interior and exterior parameter of the tires. the delamination is migrating towards the center of the tire as well with flaps and chunks of rubber some over 10mm are separating from the substrate. the tires only have 27,000 miles on them and look like they have 50,000+. i have never seen a vulcanization problem like this in my career. there is clearly something wrong with this rubber compound reminiscent of the ford firestone debacle. this is a serious issue and the dealer seams to be ineffective in getting a corrective action in place. the dealer is skalnek ford in lake orion, mi and was notified on saturday august 17th when i was informed that i would need to bring my car back on monday august 19th at which time they would fix the vehicle. i have since returned from the dealer with the repair not completed as the dealer is waiting for hankook to respond back to them with the repair authorization. as of this complaint the dealer said ford would not cover the issue as it is out of the 12/12 warranty period for the tires, and they are not sure if or when hankook would respond. on a separate note when i was in the service area of the dealer another customer which also happened to be an engineer said he had the exact same problem with his vehicle and replaced at his expense all 4 tires with another brand. in short this is not an isolated incident and could in fact put consumers at risk. my wife only discovered the issue because she took the car in for a potential trade-in and the dealer alerted her to the issue of thursday the 15th of august.

We noticed severe premature tire wear on the factory tires on our 2017 ford explorer. the suv came with hankook 255/50r20 105h ventus s1 noble 2 tires which started showing signs of premature wear within 15,000 miles. now one is completely bald at 33,042 miles and the others are peeling/cracking. we made sure the tires had sufficient air pressure, and rotated them at every oil change, yet they still kept wearing. that one tire has been completely bald since 30,000 miles (zero tread and wear indicator band showing). we saw the notice under nhtsa id: 10137109 (manufacturer communication number: ssm 47195) and multiple reports of blowouts. we called ford on 6-25-2019 and ford told us they would cover 30% of the cost but would replace them with the same kind of tire. we chose to get another brand out of an abundance of caution. these tires are going to get someone killed.

Equipped with hankook tires ventus s1 noble 2 255/50r20 that have excessive early tread wear and scalloping/flaking along the edges. car had less than 16,000 miles when wear noticed. had tires rotated and aligned again to ensure not caused by these issues. now worn to the point of unsafe. only driven on highway and city streets.

I took my vehicle in for service at landers ford in collierville, tn on 6/11/2019 because i had a slow leak in one of my tires and needed an oil change. the technician who completed the services told me that i need new tires. i questioned this because the tires only had 28,222 miles on them. i was told that the tires that ford placed on this vehicle before it was sold to me (hankook) were wearing out before they normally would. (my understanding is that the tires have a 50,000 mile warranty on them.) i asked what we could do about getting them replaced and was told by the service advisor that i would have to buy new tires. i explained that this was unacceptable and called ford motor company. i spoke with several representatives at ford because i kept getting hung up on during the conversation. one of the representatives told me that ford would pay 30% of the cost of new tires. we eventually were able to get a case open on the issue (case #cas-21837229). ford contacted the dealer to work on a solution. on 6/26/19, i received a call from the dealership that they had contacted the tire manufacturer and was told that there is nothing they would do. the service manager instructed me to call ford back. i called ford, and they told me they would not do anything for me but that i should save my receipt when i get new tires in case a service action/recall was issued in the future.

Hancook 255/50r20 105h ventus s1 noble 2 tires worn to point of steel belt showing with under 20k miles. serious safety concern.

I purchased a 2017 ford explorer xlt and after 20,000 miles i was told the tires needed to be replaced. i agree with the service man and am looking to replace them. i looked at the tires, hankook, venous s1noble 2, 255/50r20 105h and saw the dot date was 002881, 2012.. if i'm reading this correct the tires were five years old upon buying the vehicle and they are now seven years old with 20,000 miles on them. i believe they are unsafe and were probable unsafe when i bought the vehicle

On april 19, 2019 i brought my car to ford in torrance california. this is the second time i brought my car to them. i'm leasing a 2017 ford explore with hancock tires. these hancock tires are standard on all the ford explores. at mile 3000 i received a sidewall blowout on my passenger rear tire. and while 20,000 i noticed the treading on the tires were very low, and at 25,000 the radios began to show. this is when i brought the car back to the ford dealer. the technicians stated that this tire was defective and needed to be replaced. all four had a treading that was extremely low. the problem is ford is charging the consumer the cost of labor the cost of taxes and 70% the cost of the tire. i believe when there's a defective tire or any component in the car the sales vendor is responsible for replacing the defective part. furthermore i believe the sales vendor ford should mitigate the problem with these tires to protect the consumers they are selling to. this is not what happened in this case and many other cases. the reason i found out my tire trade-in was low , was i proceeded to stop my car at a stop sign where there was water overflowing and i hydroplaned through the intersection with my young kids in the backseat. these tires are going to kill people if they are not recalled and take it off all her cars. i am a doctor, and i see patients who are injured in accidents all the time but usually two personal air. after reviewing all of the negative reviews and defects from this tire online i believe it's negligence by the ford motor company and hancock tires if this matter is not resolved.

Before leaving for florida i had my 2017 explorer serviced at the dealership. there was approx 16,000 miles and tires were checked to be fine. these tires are hankook ventus s1 noble tires. five and a half months later 18,000 miles, tread is worn and they are chipping and pealing and i had a blowout on the highway.

My tires are shredding and falling apart. the car has 21000 miles only. tires have been rotated two times already. have been driving for 30 years and i have never seen anything like it. went back to the dealer and the menager was no help. wantedme to pay for new tires. absoultely ridiculous and he was rude. i have been reviewing many customer complaints with the same issue.

I purchased a 2017 ford explorer with hankook ventus s1 noble 2 105h tires in sept 2017. i only have 14400 miles on these tires. they have always been inflated correctly, and maintained. today, my husband noticed the tires are shredding. basically the rubber is peeling off the tire in chunks. ford says they don't warranty tires, and hankook has their head in the sand. someone is going to get hurt! what a sad day!

Ford explorers, such as mine, are equipped from the factory with defective and potentially dangerous hankook ventus s1 noble 2 tires, acknowledged by the tire manufacturer hankook. this type of tire provided by ford and hankook have known issues with their construction and durability which not only is a significant concern for the health, safety, and welfare of owners such as myself. moreover, significant fiscal concerns based upon replacement of such tires due tires developing cracks, cracks, and chips in tire sidewall which results in rapid loss of tire pressure that could cause loss of control of the vehicle and increase likely of an accident and/or significant injury or death. i have personally sent my vehicle to the dealer for tire replacement due to issues with affected tire damage. hankook must be held accountable for manufacturing and selling products with known defects. my vehicle, which i purchased new from the dealer, currently has 26,000 miles on it and i have to replace hankook's defective tires due as a result of the tires having chips, cracks, and unusual accelerated tread wear which was not the result of improper alignment.

The tires on my ford explorer we're completely bald with less than 14,000 miles on then. i drive slow and am safe minded driver. when the tires appeared to be cut i took the explorer back to the dealer and two other tire dealers. all said the tires were defective and would become dangerous to drive in short period of time. i see other complaints about the same tires on this same vehicle on here. ford did not want to warranty the tires.

My 2017 explorer limited (11042 miles driven since new as of today ) and purchased new december 2017 factory equipped with hankook ventus s1 noble 2 tires, are vibrating at all speeds and won`t hold air pressure longer than two weeks. during inspection, minute hairline cracks were detected on all 4 tires. this vehicle has only been driven short distances not exceeding 50 miles radius. the tires were rotated at 5000 miles. the vehicle was taken to a reputable shop for inspection and they recommend replacing all four tires asap. this tires should also be included in the recall asap.

Oem hankook tires on 2017 ford explorer: with less than 15,000 miles on my 2017 explorer, it began to hydroplane at much lower speeds than when new. the tires are oem, hankook, ventus s1 noble. i took the car to fugate ford, who said they recently processed two other vehicles with bad hankook tires. on closer inspection with doug at fugate, you could see the tire tread was ripping away from itself all the way around the tire. fugate took pictures and phoned hankook. fugate called me to say that because the tires had 6/32 tread remaining, they would not process the claim. hankook needed the tread wear to be 4/32 or less. in my view, that's ridiculous... these hankook tires are defective and unsafe, whether at 6/32 or 4/32. today, i had all four defective tires replaced.

2017 ford explorer sport. basically the original hankook ventus tires that came on the car have worn incredibly fast. 15000 currently and they are almost bald on the edges. dealer claimed that alignment was fine. tires always inflated and rotated. i think this is a safety issue. these tire are not adequate for this size vehicle. ford hopes that consumers are stupid and just buy new tires. these tires will get people killed. ford should not use these tires. actually come to think of it my 2018 vw gti has the same tires and i had a sidewall fail within 300 miles of purchasing. hankook is garbage!!!!!!

2017 ford explorer equipped with hankook ventus s1 noble 2 105h tires, size: 255/50r20. chunks and pieces of the rubber are detaching, peeling, and flaking from the tire tread surface. the tires have 13,100 miles on them. they are oem from ford. there are lots of complaints on the internet ford complaint web sites. dot date is (1416) this is a manufacture defect.

Hankook ventus s1 noble2 (excluded from recall) are wearing extraordinary fast and the rubber is starting to pull apart, flake away. chucks of rubber are coming off of the tire and leaving holes that appear to be about 1/4 inch deep . this will be our second set of tires with the same issue and the vehicle has only 40,000 miles.

I lease a2017 ford explorer sport which currently has 20,000 miles. i went to flood ford dealership for an oil change and was advised my hankook tires were wearing rapidly and would need to be replaced soon. the service advisor stated that there have been a lot of problems with these certain tires. i inquired due to the vehicle being under warranty if they would be replaced at no cost to me. the dealer advised that they contacted hankook and they would only give me 500 dollars towards a new set. i feel this is unacceptable for me the consumer due to the fact hankook acknowledges there is a defect with their product and my vehicle is still under the bumper to bumper warranty. thank you [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).' *pm

Purchased 2017 ford explorer february 2017 with original hankook ventus s1 noble2 255/50r20 105h tires. have 20,000 miles and have been rotated at each oil change; have been experiencing low air pressure readings, chipping on tires, and extreme treadwear. dealer suggested to contact hankook directly because others have experienced similar issues. many attempts to contact hankook customer service have not been successful...this is another dangerous issue similar to the firestone disaster.

Hankook ventus s1 noble 2 tire chipping/peeling at 5000 miles. front two tires worse than rear. rotated tires and replaced the two that were on the front through the dealer. now the the tires have front tires have 10,000 miles and are chipping/peeling.

Hankook tires (255/50r20 105h ventus s1 noble 2) that came with the vehicle are showing unusual cracking and chipping. the vehicle only has 11,400 miles and is driven about 5 miles per day and mostly in a residential area. i took vehicle in for a routine oil change/tire rotation and service technician warned me that the tires were wearing and chipping. each tire has visible chunks coming out of the treads. i called ford and hankook today and reported this problem, but i have to wait a full week for an appointment to get this inspected. other owners of this vehicle have reported similar problems and it is very concerning that ford/hankook hasn't taken action to recall and replace these tires. https://www.explorerforum.com/forums/index.php?threads/treadwear-issue-with-ventus-s1-noble-2-hankooks.457805/

While driving the vehicle at approximately 20 mph a loud noise was heard and the left rear tire rapidly deflated. installed the factory spare tire. noted a 2" long slice across the tread of the tire. took to local mechanic for replacement. mechanic discovered that the tire was not punctured. the tire failed. the other 3 tires were in similar condition. you could pick pieces of rubber out of the tire with your bare hands. tires are 1 year old and had 20,000 miles on them. ford dealership said they were aware of an issue with the hankook ventus s1 noble 2 tires, size: 255/50r20. the dealership offered a $196 credit per tire for a tire of my choice. i had to pay for labor. it the failed tire had been on the front of the vehicle and operating at highway speeds, this could have caused a very serious accident.

I have a 2017 ford explorer with 5500 miles and noticed the tires are having uneven wear they are hankook ventus s1 noble 2 in 255/50/20 5mn1ah 1316 this is a known issue and these should be covered under the factory/ tire warranty as it states from 1 mile to 12k miles it is covered 100% in the manual and hankook wants to pro rate the tires for a defect that is caused my the manufacturing process shame on them

2017 ford explorer equipped with hankook ventus s1 noble 2 105h tires, size: 255/50r20. tires, chunks and pieces of the rubber detached from the tires. called malloy ford in winchester va and said needed to contact a hankook dealer no one will help and according to the tire manufacturer warranty that comes with new car would only cover sixty percent of the tire replacement after 12,000 miles. the vehicle manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered no assistance. the tires were not replaced. the tire and vehicle failure mileage is 21,500 with 6/32 thread. ford has multiple complaints and doing nothing to help either is hankook . tires are a road hazard and could blow out and cause a accident this needs investigated.

2017 ford explorer sport with hankook 255/50r20 105h ventus s1 noble 2 tires are chipping/cutting and wearing prematurely. vehicle only has 12,500 miles.

Takata recall my car has 23,000 and the front hankook tires are bald and flaking off.

Tires that came with vehicle have chunks of tread peeling off /cutting from normal driving of 9100 miles and 11 months. this presents several hazards such as vehicle stability, traction and potential blowout / rollovers other sizes these same hankook ventus s1 noble2 have already been recalled due to similar failures. these are 255/50 r 20 size.

Front tires hankook ventus s1 noble 2 255/50r20 are shredding and chipping at 10k miles

I took my car in for a oil change and my dealer called to inform me i needed to replace all my tires as the treads were all in the unsafe area. the tires are: hankook ventus s1 nobel 2 size 255/50r20 dot 5mnc 1a h 1316 these tires have 23,000 miles on them and came oem on 2017 ford explorer. the tire tread is gone. premature wear. please investigate as others are reporting the same exact problem on the same vehicle. see ford bulliton ssm 46905

Went to dealer for routine maintenance and dealer indicated i need immediate tire replacement of all 4 tires because the tread is flaking off! the vehicle was parked in the service bay drive. there are visible signs of tread separations and gouges in the tires. my explorer has 28k miles on it and the manufacturer warranty says 50k. i believe this is a tire defect. i have an excellent service record on my vehicle and this is not normal wear for any tires. this explorer was purchased new from the dealer with these tires. i was a previous owner of a 2013 explorer (also purchased new) and the tires lasted 60k. after researching, there seem to be a number of complaints from ford explorer owners about this same issue. please investigate.

Re:hankook ventus s1 noble 2 255/50r20 105h-on 01/20/18, i was advised by a new friend to have my tires checked out. he noticed the pieces of tire chipping off and was concerned for my safety. the following week, i took my car to olin mott, a longtime & reputable area tire store. they informed me that all 4 tires were showing signs of "peeling" & recommended that i take my car back to the dealership where i had first purchased it. on 01/26/18 i took my car into the dealership to have them looked at. the dealership came back & said that they'd have to file a complaint w/ the tire manufacturer & they'd take pictures of all 4 tires & would let me know what the tire manufacturer said needed to be done. 6 days later, the dealership calls stating that hankook tires advised that all 4 tires need to be replaced & that the'dd offer a 50% prorata price basis. my vehicle manufacture sticker date is 04/17. i purchased my car on june 14, 2017 brand new. less than 8 months of ownership, i now have to replace all 4 tires. as of 01/26/18, i had approx 14,300 miles. now at 16,400 miles, they are peeling and now chunks are now coming out of all 4 tires. i have an appt in 05/12/18 to purchase 4 new tires. bc after paying $40,000 less than a year ago, i have to save the money. this tire has numerous complaints all over the usa. ford won't take responsibility even though they contracted w/ hankook tires in 2011 for hankook to be the official fitment tire for the ford explorer. also, ford/lincoln extended their contract recently. other brands such as hyaundi have recently cancelled their partnership w/ hankook. if something is not done about these tires, it's my fear that someone is going to be seriously injured or killed. ford should also take responsibility bc they put the tires on their new vehicles they want to sell & do sell. location: tampa, fl. please help us, the consumers. thanks!

It has been just over 1 year driving this vehicle, 8115 miles currently. a few days ago while walking around my car, i noticed chipping, cracking, & peeling away of the tread on my tires. it does not look normal and not too sure if it is safe to continue to drive. i took it to the local ford dealer where we leased it from and they claimed that it is normal tire wear for hawaii roads. i dont think so. i have owned several vehicles over the past few years and have never seen this before. the vehicle has never been off-road, pulled a heavy load, or driven aggressively, and is in immaculate condition otherwise. the vehicle was just in for service just over 1 month ago so i am not sure how this was not caught in the multi-point inspection or the tire rotation they supposedly did.

Hankook ventus s1 nobel 2 size 255/50r20 105h dot 5mnc 1a h 1916 these tires have 16,940 miles (13 months since bought it) on them and came oem on 2017 ford explorer. the tire tread is peeling and shredding. premature wear. i took it to ford and they said that a service message (ssm 46905) relative to 2015-2018 explorer- hankook tires- chipping, cutting and/or unusual/accelerated tread wear. the message states " some 2015-2018 explorer vehicles equipped with hankook brand tires may exhibit chipping, cutting and/or unusual or even accelerated tread wear.if the size wall is marked as:255/50r20 105h ventus s1 noble 2contact hankook technical services". the dealer did and hankook knows about the issue but only offered a 50% discount on new tires as a corrective measure. so basically they sold bad tires an the customer has to pay to fix the problem.

My vehicle has about 19,000 miles and the tires are about bald. took my local dealer and they are telling me that ford will not address the issue. this vehicle cannot go through another winter. many complaints on line about this same issue with hankook tires on ford explorers. hankook or ford need to step up before major problems occcur. should not have to be replacing tires that are rated for 50,000 miles when they are under 20,000. have maintained this vehicle regularly with correct tire pressure and tire rotations. i have been attempting to resolve this issue with my dealer for several months when i noticed unusually extensive wear.

The subject vehicle has approximately 12,200 miles on oem supplied hankook ventus s1 noble 2 tires. size 255/50r20. tread is peeling off and premature wear. 50k mile rated tire is at 5/32 @ approx. 12200 miles with scheduled rotation performed. ford dealer and hankook rep have acknowledged hankook is having a problem with these tires on this vehicle. please investigate the safety of these tires. see attached photo of peeled tread.

Hankook ventus s1 noble2 tires have large chunks coming off the tread at 9,300 miles (reported to dealer); condition got worse at 12,000miles (reported to dealership again); condition continues to get worse at 14,000 miles (car left at dealership for tires to be sent to hankook)

2016 ford explorer limited equipped with hankook ventus s1 noble 2 tires size 255/50 r20. the dot code on the tires is 5mnc 1ah 0716. the vehicle odometer shows 4,186 miles. on february 19, 2017 while driving on a residential street at less than 25mph the front passenger side tire suffered a "catastrophic" sidewall failure resulting in the tire going completely flat in less that 1 minute. the failure occurred on the inside sidewall of the tire. (this seems to be the same symptom for which hankook issued an earlier - jan 2016 - recall.) all four tires were properly inflated as indicated by the tire pressure monitoring system. to the best of our knowledge the tire had never struck an object that could have weakened the sidewall.
