With no warning - experienced sudden loss of power while driving. engine light came on. also the wrench light came on with a message that said "see manual." i was able to get out of traffice and pull over. after ten minutes, i restarted the car. the car started back up with no problem and the engine light was back off. from there it drove beautifully like it never happened - except that it did ! four days later, i take it to the dealorship. they determined that this happened due to a defective throttle body. i have to have it replaced and it's going to cost me $380. i find it hard to believe that with the significant number of complaints on this issue all over the internet that they didn't know about this at the dealorship when they sold me the car. and also that ford has not recalled this yet considering the number of complaints. i have to have this fixed, i have no choice. i would definitly like to reumbersed for this repair. but in addition to the out of pocket cost, the power going out on the car while driving is a major safety issue. with the significant number of complaints on this issue with this specific vehicle model / year , i hope that somebody doesn't have to die before they place a recall on this issue.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford explorer. while driving approximately 75 mph, the check engine warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle stalled. the contact stated that the vehicle went into limp mode. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who retrieved diagnostic trouble code: p2111 (throttle actuator control system stuck open). the vehicle was not repaired. autonation ford marietta (located at 869 cobb pkwy se, marietta, ga 30060, (770) 674-6077) was infomred of the failure via phone. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 140,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford explorer. while driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle hesitated when the accelerator pedal was depressed and the wrench warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to gilboy ford (2805 macarthur rd, whitehall, pa 18052) to be diagnosed, but the failure could not be duplicated. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure recurred on march 28, 2019. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 45,500.
During acceleration, a brief pause in acceleration or down shifting of gears. feels like the transmission is slipping. usually noticed during 30 minutes of normal driving conditions.
On a city street experience loss of accelerating power while coming to stop and crossing an intersection the vehicle will star at a snail pace bringing up the speed to 40 mph on limp mode since the vehicle service wrench tool and air bag light up on the dash board vehicle will not respond pushing down on the gas pedal.
It jolts, lunges, transmission doesn't engage and slams into gear hard it makes you feel you got rear ended with a big bank. slow to accelerate and when it finally does it lunges
2016 ford explorer accelerates while driving. my vehicle has been in and out of dealership since 12/26/17. i am currently in a loaner vehicle. receive update first week of feb 2018 that the transmission dept was behind and that they will let me know as soon as possible if i need a new transmission.
When driving especially on freeway, the vehicle starts to stall and takes time to find the speed. it's come close to accidents as i've tried to get over in time when merging. has happened so far more than 5 times. sometime it happens as soon as you enter the freeway.
Travelling at 70 mph my vehicle's rpms dropped to 500 - 1000, the accelerator became unresponsive, and i was forced to pull over to the side of the road. in speaking with the mechanics at the ford dealership, the cause of the issue was a failure of the electronic throttle body (etb). my car was just over the 36,000 mile warranty, and although there was a customer satisfaction bulletin issued, my vin number was not included. there is also an active class action law suit for the same issue in previous model years, not including 2016. i spoke directly with ford via a phone call, who apologized and said there was nothing they could do to compensate me for the expense. there is obviously a very dangerous situation, and put my family in danger. in my opinion, ford is not backing their products for what is a very serious safety issue.
While driving @ 50mph on a multi lane road, engine immediately went to idle and the gas pedal was inoperative. lost all power and vehicle came to a coasting stop. fortunately there was an exit nearby and was able to get the vehicle off the main road. tried to restart the vehicle but no effect. had vehicle towed to dealer and they replaced the throttle body assembly. fortunately this did not happen during rush hour as this could have been a very dangerous situation. after searching the internet, this appears to be a systematic problem with ford. just wanted to go on record that i also had this problem. vehicle has 11k miles.
While driving with children present the car suddenly lost power and my wife could not accelerate. she had to drift over to the side of the road. the "wrench" light and check engine light came on the dash. after stopping the car and restarting she was able to get home but the car has almost no acceleration and kept shuddering. fortunately the roads were quite and there was no damage or injury. if she was on a busy road or highway it would have been very dangerous. car has around 7000 miles on the clock. *tr
Vehicle was in cruise control at about 60 mph and suddenly decelerated to 5-10 mph and would not accelerate. engine, wrench and air bag light came on. shut engine off and let sit and restarted. vehicle drove normal but still had engine light on. took to dealership and waiting on diagnostic. could of been a dangerous situation if in heavy traffic.

I was driving on 675 in dayton ohio at 65-70 miles an hour when my ford explorer xlt lost all acceleration and i was forced to coast to a stop on the left shoulder of the highway. i was able to turn the car off and restart it, and drive it home without incident. i had it towed to a ford dealer and hopefully will have an answer tomorrow. this vehicle is a 2016 xlt with just over 8,000 miles. i no longer trust this vehicle and will be researching more reliable vehicles.
Driving down the road at 45 mph when the engine rpm's dropped below 1,000 and i lost all throttle controls. i had to shift into n and coast into the median. once stopped, i turned the vehicle off and on again but still had no throttle controls. vehicle has 6,700 miles and the dealer says the problem was a software glitch that they knew about and were going to fix at my 7,000 mile service. i was lucky i was not on the freeway when this happened. if ford knows about this glitch it should be fixed right away!
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford explorer. while driving approximately 75 mph, the vehicle's speed suddenly decelerated to 45 mph and the wrench sensor indicator illuminated. after shutting the vehicle off and restarting the engine, the vehicle operated normally. the cause of the failure was not diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 4,700.
While driving below 30 mph attempted to accelerate and felt a jolt, engine cut off,"wrench" light and air bag light came on (last one probably when the engine shut off).had to coast to the side,re-started engine and it started shaking, rpms kept going up and down between 1-2000.turned off and waited a few minutes.started engine again and it was running normal except check engine was on.went to local ford dealer (we were on vacation) who couldn't take us in for at least 6 hrs and wanted us to pay for diagnostic (new car, just had first oil change).went to auto zone and they read code p2112 -throttle body failure and armed with that scheduled service at my local dealer.on the way back issue repeated itself two more times.all on lower speeds (city driving).current miles 6200.

Vehicle lost power while driving down a busy highway at 65+ mph. engine was running rough (sounded like a tractor) and could not accelerate. dash lights came on. vehicle was able to coast to an exit ramp where it was towed to the dealership to have the throttle body replaced. mileage was just over 7,000. it is sad that i had to rescue my family (wife, 4 month old baby, 3 year old and 6 year old) off a busy highway exit ramp when the vehicle is less than 6 months old. the tow truck driver said he gets about 3 or 4 of the same issue with new explorers a week. how can this not be a recall? now we will drive in fear of this problem occurring again since, from what the dealer said, the throttle body was replaced with the exact same part. i guess we just won't take any long trips when we are around 7,000 miles on this throttle body...? unbelievable ford. what a piece of junk!
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford explorer. while attempting to decelerate from 65 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the driver was able to coast onto the shoulder. the engine warning indicator illuminated after the failure occurred. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the throttle body failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 10,400.

While my explorer was in motion while driving home on a city street, the car seemed to slip gear and suddenly lost acceleration. pushing the gas pedal did nothing and the car would only move forward up to 5 mph. i received a notice on the dashboard saying "check owners manual" as well as the check engine, wrench and airbag light being lit. i was able to make it home since i was right down the block. after restarting the car on multiple occasions it drove normally but the check engine light remained on. i was able to take it to the dealer which stated that i needed a new throttle body. this seems to be a known issue with ford but there has not been any recall. my explorer was purchased in november 2015 and has roughly 7,900 miles driven. had i been on the highway with my family this could have resulted in a major accident.

I was driving down i-295 with a speed of 65mph when i saw a wrench icon on the dash board light up and i lost control on acceleration. no power even though you are stepping on the gas you slowly decelerate like you placed the car in neutral.the next day i called up the service dept of my dealer. explained to the tech what had happened and without hesitation he replied "you have to change the throttle body, it's defective ."
Vehicle suddenly stops accelerating. was driving and had gas pedal to the floor, but vehicle kept slowing down then suddenly jerked forward. driving downhill while braking and rpm gauge surging for no reason.
Car jerked and then the wrench light came on. could not accelerate over 5 mph, has gas pedal to the floor, just over 7000 miles.
Driving down road and explorer started losing power, cutting out and engine almost died. the check engine light and tool light came on display. i was barely a few hundred feet from my house, so i slowly managed to get vehicle to my driveway. my husband attempted to drive explorer in subdivision again and explorer again started misfiring and engine died. turned air conditioner off and it restarted and appeared to shake explorer as engine misfired and we barely got it back in our driveway. it only has 7,740 miles on it!! i called dealership and had it towed to there today.
Husband was driving the vehicle was about to accelerate to get up a hill on a city street and engine sounded like transmission or other major part just "dropped". steering wheel froze, car idled violently, could not move vehicle, started to roll backwards until emergency brake was applied.acceleration went to literally zero, suv would not move. orange wrench light came on, stated to see manual.placed car in park shut off engine and waited and started at back up again. scarry stuff, 2 children 2 and younger in vehicle. won't let me input on next page, approximately 25-30 miles an hour, suv has 5,500 miles on it
I was driving my vehicle on a street and the gas petal stopped working. the car started shaking and i couldn't make it to the side of the road. the car would drive again after restarting the engine, but, only for 5-10 minutes before the gas petal stopped working again. i took it to the ford dealership and was told it was the throttle body and they have been having electrical issues and this happens a lot. they installed a new throttle body and told me they weren't sure if it would happen again. i had my family in the car with me and it was an extremely dangerous situation.
I rented a 2016 ford explorer from avis at the portland (me) airport (avis vehicle #40933351). on friday, july 15th, the unit stalled as i pulled into an intersection. the accelerator was non-responsive and the car moved at a very reduced rate of speed. several lights on the dashboard lit up - check engine, airbag, and a note came up to check the owner's manual. i was able to finish crossing the intersection at the slower speed and pull to the side of the road. i shut the car off and restarted it and it operated properly for a while. later that night, i stopped at a stop light. when the light turned green, i made a left hand turn. once again, the accelerator stopped working and the dashboard lit up with multiple warning lights. i pulled to the side of the road and called avis roadside assistance. the person on the line told me this was a common issue with ford explorers and that i had to turn the car off, step on the accelerator, then put my foot on the brake and restart the car to clear the fault but the check engine light would stay on. the check engine light stayed on but i was able to pull back onto the road at full speed. approximately 1/4 mile down the road i stopped at a traffic light. once again, i began to cross the intersection when the accelerator stopped working and the dashboard lit up. i pulled over and reset the car as i had done before and proceeded to drive away. a few hundred feet away, the accelerator stopped working again and the dashboard lit up. i was able to pull over, reset the car and drive away. this is an extremely dangerous condition that needs to be fixed immediately. the accelerator stops working without warning and the car only travels at a very slow speed that is not controlled by the accelerator. 3 out of 4 times it happened in the middle of an intersection. if there was oncoming traffic, i would have been hit.
Driving on i-10 about 1 mile before daphne, al, engine sputtered and vehicle began loosing speed. pressing the gas pedal did nothing, check engine light came on, service manual light came on, and airbag light came on. coasted to the side of the interstate, stuck between the white line of the lane edge and a guardrail with only inches to spare from traffic passing at 70 mph. all this with my wife in the front seat and our 2 daughters in the backseat who are 2 years old and 5 months old. engine was running rough and would not increase rpms even when pressing the accelerator pedal. shut engine off and on 6 times before it finally responded to accelerator pedal input. was finally able to merge back on to the interstate and get to the daphne exit. we had to stay the night in a hotel in daphne while we waited for another vehicle to get us home to louisiana. this was a rental vehicle and had to be towed to the mobile airport so that we could get another vehicle from enterprise. a quick internet search revealed numerous complaints of the exact same issue but no evidence of any recall. apparently the throttle body is faulty and most people report that the part is on back order. ford knows about this problem and nhtsa should too but somehow nothing is being done. this incident left us on the side of the road, inches from being killed by passing motorists. how this is not under a recall or stop sale order is beyond me. please initiate a recall and/or stop sale order on these vehicles before someone is killed or seriously injured.
This particular problem occurred three times over two days. the first time i was driving approximately 45mph on a city street when a wrench light and airbag light came on and the vehicle's throttle stopped responding. if i let off the break the vehicle would continue to move at approximately 5mph so i was able to get it off the roadway. i turned the vehicle off and back on and it seemed to be functioning normally with the check engine light illuminated. i was able to make it to my office where i left it parked until after lunch. when i cranked up the vehicle after lunch the check engine light was no longer on. after driving approximately ten more miles i attempted to make a left turn into a parking lot when the same thing happened and i was almost hit by an oncoming truck. after turning the vehicle off for a while i cranked it again and the check engine light was not illuminated. i made it home with no issue and the next morning i left home heading to the dealership to drop the vehicle off. as i was turning left on to a side street the vehicle again stalled and again i was almost struck by oncoming traffic. i turned the vehicle off and back on and after that was able to make it to the dealership without an issue. the diagnostic test indicated that the electronic throttle body was the issue. the dealership informed me that this was a widespread problem. the vehicle i was operating is an undercover police vehicle and only has 9,000 miles on it. had i been responding to an emergency at a high speed i fear that either i or another motorist could have been seriously hurt or killed.
I was driving 45mph on a busy street when suddenly the car just stalled. i had kids in the back seat and frantically pressed the gas pedal which pressed down but nothing happened. the wrench and check engine light illuminated. luckily, i was able to put my hazards on and pull over. we are so fortunate we didn't reach the highway yet on this busy holiday weekend. i am sure it would have ended differently. this is a very dangerous situation and needs to be addressed. what good is a new car if you can't trust it? hoping the throttle body is a reconfigured part when they fix it. needs a recall!!
Driving on interstate highway, wrench light came on, loss of acceleration, limped to side of road. was on vacation, brought car to dealer, needed throttle body and was told ford had a 23 day back order on part so this is obviously a common, dangerous problem. ford would not pay for comparable rental car.
I was driving my 2016 ford explorer on a busy street when the engine light and the orange wrench light came on. the car stalled and would not accelerate.it lost all power. i am terrified of driving it now. it would not move faster than 5 miles per hour. the car has 6,000 miles on it.
The vehicle was in movement, going 50 mph, when it came to a sudden stall. the vehicle would not go over 5 mph even while pressing the accelerator. the wrence light would come on and it would it would not go over 5 mph.
I was driving home at 10:00 am after visiting a doctor's office on a busy highway at 57 mph when all of a sudden the car gas peddle is not working. the car is in complete shut down mode. i rolled through an intersection to get to safe place out of traffic. the car dash board showed a wrench and engine light and on the dashboard a message stated "see manual". the car had completely shut down. scared to death at what just happened, i called ford warranty number for a tow truck and waited for 2 1/2 hours till finally the tow truck showed up. when i got to the dealership where i purchased the car, i was seriously devastated. two managers told me they didn't know what was wrong with the car, but they would work to find out. they knew what the problem was and how serious this situation was and never told me at the time. i searched the internet and found that the problem is the throttle body. it has been happening a quite a few of ford's cars. i still can't believe the very serious situation i had been in. i searched to see if there were any recalls for my vehicle and there wasn't any. this needs to stop and ford needs to recall all these vehicles before somebody gets killed. i do not care to own this vehicle any longer or any other ford vehicle for that matter.. whose to say this problem doesn't exist in any other models. i was called yesterday but justin in service and was told that it is the throttle body and it was going to take along time to get the part and that he would stay in touch to let me know anything. he stated that sam gallaway ford would pay for the 1st 9 days of my rental and then my insurance would have to pay the rest.
The vehicle was paused at gas station exit ready to enter the traffic. when i stepped on the gas pedal the vehicle started to move forward then immediately three lights (air bag, wrench, and motor) came on and the vehicle would not accelerate leaving me to simply "roll" on and maneuver to a side area off the main road. thankfully the brakes were functioning or the outcome could have been potentially worse.
2016 ford explorer. consumer writes in regards to vehicle complete loss of power, airbag, check engine and powertrain warning lights illuminated at various times and accelerator malfunction. *smd the consumer stated while driving on a main road, he heard a loud thud accompanied by an immediate and complete loss of power. the engine was still running, but the vehicle quickly lost speed and the accelerator was not functioning. it seemed as though the engine was idling. the consumer was able to maneuver the vehicle safely out of traffic and had the vehicle towed to the dealer. the dealer informed the consumer, the throttle body needed to be replaced. also, there was a recurring electrical issue that he experienced in january 2016 with the first month of delivery. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for service on two separate occasions due to dead batteries. *jb
Tl* the contact owns a 2016 ford explorer. while driving 45 mph, the check engine light illuminated, the vehicle lost power, and stalled. the contact was able to restart the vehicle and coasted to the side of the road. the vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that there was an issue with the throttle body, which needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 52,000.
I was driving in the left lane of an interstate highway at ~65 mph when my vehicle decelerated down to 15 mph. the vehicle was still running but it was essentially 'dead' in that nothing happened when you step on the gas pedal. i was losing speed by the second and could not make it over to the right lane due to heavy traffic, so i was lucky and found a small left should to pull over on. if there was no left shoulder, i don't know what the outcome would have been. after being towed to the local ford dealer/service shop, it was determined to be an electronic throttle body(etb) which failed. ford replaced the etb, but stated the replacement etb was the same as the one which failed. there was no reassurance that the problematic etb was being replaced with a more durable solution. the ford service shop mentioned that this has been a major issue in 2015 & 2016 ford explorers, but there is no official recall. after doing some research on my own, i was disturbed to find that there have been many recent etb failures on ford explorers. considering this issue relates directly to the ability of the driver to accelerate, it is a major safety hazard. if the driver loses the ability to move off the road, there many accidents waiting to happen.
The throttle body on my ford explorer failed at only 6,000 miles.
Was driving down a street, going about 40mph, the car immediately slowed to 5pmh and would not accelerate even when pushing the gas all the way down. i had to coast it home, drop the family off, and then coast it to the ford dealership. upon arriving, the dealership informed me that ford was aware of the issue and that all parts are currently on back order.
I was on my way home from ocean city, & was slowing down at a stop light, when a wrench lit up on my dash & i totally lost all acceleration. i was unable to accelerate and could hardly move. luckily, i was in the right lane & was able to drift slowly off the highway into a gas station. i live 2 1/2 hours from where this happened & it was a saturday night, and nothing was open. i took manual out and found the 24 hr roadside assistance number, which they were able to get a tow truck for me. and i had purchased the extended warranty but the 24 hour help line could not advise me on anything, just to call my dealer in the morning, which the next day was sunday, and no one was open til monday. the tow truck driver came & towed my truck to the nearest dealer, which is still 125 miles from home. received a call monday, 6/13, that it is the throttle body that needs replaced, but the part is on back order and no idea on when the part will be in, but they put a rush on it. i was told that i could pick up my truck, but that it could happen again? why would i drive it knowing that i could lose power while driving it again? next time i might not be so lucky and be able to safely get off the road. ....... needless to say, i have a rental car, which ford is paying for and have no idea on when my vehicle will be fixed, as they are not providing me with an estimated repair completion date at this time. i bought this truck so i wouldn't have to worry about breaking down, my previous vehicle was a 2006 ford explorer with 237,500 miles on it that only let me sit once, i have only made two payments on my new truck, and am without my new vehicle. from what i am reading, this is a recurring issue with 2016 ford explorers, this problem should be a recall issue, & if the part is on back order, then it's definitely a problem.
I was driving my car everything was fine, it has 4,800 miles on it and all of a sudden the accelerator wouldn't work. i had the gas pedal push to the floor and nothing. a small tool wrench came on the dash with a service light. i brought my explorer to the dealership. i was told it was the throttle body that needs to be replaced but it's been four weeks and the part is still on back order.
I was driving approximately 40 mph when i lost acceleration. the wrench system light appeared and i quickly coasted to the side of the road. this was very dangerous as i was driving around a blind curve and if a vehicle had been following closely i would have been rear ended. from what i have been reading it appears i am having an issue with the throttle control.
Was driving my 2016 ford explorer xlt on a busy road and was going approximately 40 miles per hour when the vehicle suddenly went into what appeared to be "limp mode" and would barely move....my guess is about 2 mph. it was very sudden and occurred without any type of warning. i was able to roll into someone's downhill driveway where the vehicle sat for several minutes. i restarted the car multiple times and while pressing on the gas pedal the car remained in "limp mode" and would not move. the dashboard lit up and displayed the following icons: wrench, airbag and engine lights. if i would have had anyone behind me or would have been driving on the highway when this occurred i would have been killed. this is a major issue that the general public needs to be made aware of.....this is a major danger that has the ability to produce catastrophic results.
I was driving 60 mph, straight, in the express lanes on a highway (2 lanes, no shoulder). the accelerator pedal stopped working. it was rush hour traffic. i had to immediately put on my hazards and try to move to the side as best i could. it was a very dangerous situation as cars and trucks were veering very close to me and were also traveling fast when all of the sudden i lost speed. i was almost hit by several cars. i called both the dealer and ford roadside assistance. no help ever arrived. i had to call my own tow truck 3 hours later. the il dept of transportation was forced to bump me off the road after i was stranded for over 2 hours with no help.
