Vehicle has strong fuel smell inside cabin at startup but there are no engine codes to check. other year models of this vehicle have had a recall on the fuel system leaking, but not yet on this year model as far as i could find.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford explorer. while driving 60 mph, the contact noticed toxic fumes coming through the vents into the cabin of the vehicle. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the contact called scarsdale ford (located at 887 central park ave, scarsdale, ny 10583, (914) 472-9500) and informed them of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 67,000.
When suddenly accelerating to speed over 65 mph , exhaust gas/fumes enter the main cabin, and linger for sometime, until i open all windows to dissipate the fumes. this issue always occur during sudden acceleration. i have taken vehicle to dealer several times and they installed external seals but issue continues, even after the fixes.
During acceleration extremely strong smell of exhaust fumes can be detected by passengers seated in back and middle row of vehicle. during all other times lesser amounts of exhaust fumes are present within the vehicle. these fumes are strong enough to make occupants of the vehicle nauseous during long trips. even though ford has sent multiple notifications concerning this and indicating they will take small actions against this when we arrive at the ford dealership for repairs they deny any knowledge and refuse to repair the problem.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford explorer. while driving 25 mph, the vehicle stalled and the p1450 warning indicator illuminated. the contact pulled the vehicle off the road. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the fuel system failed. the vehicle was not repaired and the failure recurred. the contact scheduled a diagnostic appointment with mcree ford (2800 gulf fwy, dickinson, tx 77539). the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in a recall. the failure mileage was 75,000.
When vehicle is stopped but running there is a gas smell that comes into the car but it does not happen all the time nor does it linger for very long after continuing to drive again.
My husband, son and myself were driving from high point nc to winston salem nc about 30 minutes drive, before arrive to our destination we have to stop almos in the middle of a road because we were feeling short of air almost unable to breath and feeling chest suppression and nausea our son give complain about the smell in the back seat but i was unable to feel it due to stuff nose. my husband had to drink two bottles of water and we got off the vehicle living all doors open, the odor was very strong. in may 15 2018 we took the vehicle to the dealer when we learned about the carbon monoxide recall they say they made the repair and today may 23 we almost crash. i thanks god we stopped and got off the car.
The smell of exhaust was overwhelming and finally a "fix" was generated. the fix is worse than the original problem. now there is an extremely strong smell of gasoline that floods the cabin of the vehicle. this occurs when in idle, when driving, when other cars are around or if i am the only car in the lot. often i notice when the heating system is on.
For about 8 months i have been suffering from dizziness spells that happen quite often, nausea , headaches, blurred vision, and anxiety that is brought on from these symptoms. i have been to the doctor countless times attempting to figure out the problem of the cause of my sickness. before i followed up on the recall i wasn't aware that my car was being recalled for carbon monoxide concerns. but it all makes sense the majority of time i feel these symptoms is either when i'm driving or have finished driving. (next dr's visit i will request they do lab work for potential carbon monoxide poisoning.) of course all the symptoms linger because obviously it stays in my system. i feel like my car is making me really sick. i am afraid to drive my car that i have had for 2 years.
Exhaust fumes in cabin when accelerating at higher speeds, especially when entering interstate and passing cars at higher speeds.
Ford explorer exhaust-leak. my 2014 ford explorer first exhibited a strong exhaust leak smells in the cabin about 18 months ago with approximately 18-20,000 miles. the smell was most noticeable after coming to a stop with the car at full operating temperature. around town it never seems to be present. i took it to loveland ford and they installed a "kit" which seemed to stop the problem, however it has recently come back stronger than ever. yesterday, i drove from denver up into the rockies and the problem was particularly bad on the return trip in stop and go traffic to the point i was feeling sick by the time i got home. i have had this before but the circumstances made this particularly unpleasant. so the circumstance when it most often exhibits the strong "rotten egg" smell mixed with exhaust is when the vehicle is at full temperature and comes to a stop.
My 2014 ford explorer has not been motified and has had strong exhaust inside the car confirmed by a ford dealer for the second time since june. the first repair made by ford to "plug" the problem made it worse. they are not testing for leaks or carbon monoxide. the are referencing this as an odor. given the risks how can it be ruled out if they are not testing for them? i am deeply concerned that ford's priority is to protect itself at the cost of our family and the people on the road. my vehicle has been doing this for sometime even while sitting in the driveway cooling down prior to any motion. i do believe we have directly been sickened by this and am installing a detector into our car and will be having blood work anytime it goes off. i have also contacted my doctor to see if there is anything on our labs to confirm the concerns. we were not made aware of the concern by ford or the fact they were aware of this since 2012. i have also had the back-up came reverse and everything located in the left of the car appeared on the right. this was confirmed in june and the camera was replaced. the obvious safety with this situation was not made public or investigated to my knowledge.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford explorer. while attempting to accelerate the vehicle at highway speeds, the cabin began to fill with a fuel odor. the contact would have to lower the windows in order for the odor to dissipate. the contact had not taken the vehicle to the dealer. the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 30,200.
A heavy propane smell happens in my car when i have the max ac and rec air on.. i just got thie car 5 months ago.. i called ford they said "sorry " this is not a recall .. and we have never heard of this issue even when i researched and it is a issue.. they tole me it would cost me to have them look at it and cost for any parts needed..
Exhaust fumes in interior.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford explorer. the contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed, a strong exhaust odor spread throughout the vehicle. no warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to ken stoepel ford-lincoln dealer at 400 sidney baker st s, kerrville, tx, phone number: (877) 469-4031, where the diagnosis could not be determined. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 40,000.
Exhaust/gas smell leaking into passager cabin when air flow turned on. also able to be smelt outside of car

Exhaust fume smells in passenger compartment , while on, parked and in motion under 45 mph
Exhaust smell inside cabin. i notice a bad exhaust odor in the cabin if i accelerate over 3,000 rpm.
Driving at hyway speed or going up hill th eco boost stalls causing traffic hazard. unable to excellerate partially stalls. took it into get repaired and the part is back order indefinteley . i have been without a car for six weeks now. no idea when it can be fixed.
The cab fills up with a strong exhaust odor periodically, probably 40 percent of the time. it happens most frequently after the car has been driven over 35 mph and then slows down. i have had this [problem checked out twice at my a ford service provider, but they say they can't smell it and they deny it is present. they did some type of repair that did not solve the problem. odor is very strong in back seat area where small children ride. odor is also strong at red lights and pulling into the garage. this has been a problem for about a year.
Purchased 2 yr old explorer-certified-and immediately started having headaches, getting sleepy during hour commute to and from work. when car accelerates on highway the smell of fumes enters the cabin. after online research we realized that ford acknowledged a factory defect in the exhaust system of their explorers that leaks exhaust fumes and carbon monoxide (can be lethal) into the cabin. they also have a bulletin that states "carbon monoxide and other exhaust fumes entering the cabin are neither harmful nor deadly". really?! i guess we're all wasting our money on co monitors for our homes. and the several cops driving explorers, passing out and crashing from the co-some of whom were nearly killed-were in no danger either. wonder why austin, texas and a few other cities have pulled their entire fleet of explorers. i had to fight the local dealership to get them to pay for "repairs"---two different occasions. the first was a patch job which i fully expected, as well as a return trip to repair a month later. not convenient as it's an hour away in la traffic. first "repair" took over 3 weeks and they continually wanted me to return the rental car as it was costing them---i told them i would be glad to return it as soon as the car was fixed. they tried their best to get me to pay for each repair, which i refused as i purchased a certified-supposedly safe-vehicle which ford acknowledged had a known factory defect. same story with 2nd repair which took 10 days where they supposedly replaced the entire exhaust system. i have my doubts though as we have the same muffler and exhaust pipe which i would assume was part of the exhaust system. so far we don't smell any fumes in the cabin---what's scary though is that co has no odor so we're getting a co monitor for the cabin.
Smell of gas in cabin of vehicle. making passengers/driver nauseated. also a smell of gas (natural or propane) from outside the vehicle when walking around it.
Sometimes my car smells like rotten eggs. i notice the problem when i'm on the highway or when i'm going up a mountain with either my a/c or heater is on. sometimes i feel nauseated after driving my car.
There is an overbearing almost intoxicating sulfur/rotten egg smell coming in the cabin of the car any time accelerating. i got this vehicle new in 2014 and it has been doing it since day one. at first i wrote it off as new car or possibly the turbo. but now after reading the thousands others with same problem i am extremely concerned for my family's well being. i have been driving my infant in this car for two years and i am very upset that i could have put her health at risk.
I have seen many complaints about the fuel valve on ford vehicles with the capless fuel systems. i recently had a check engine light go on in my car for po456 which i took to the dealer to have them check it out because i have an extended warranty. turns out that the fuel vapor valve has stuck open and needs to be replaced. sadly this is an emissions issue and not covered under my warranty. i looked up online and noticed that this happens a lot to ford with the capless fueling system. i believe this is a major issue and they are charging $250 for a part that goes out in less than 50k miles.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford explorer. the vehicle was repaired according to technical service bulletins 12-12-4 and 14-0130, and nhtsa action number: pe16008 (fuel system). the contact smelled a fuel odor after the repairs. the contact was referred to the manufacturer. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin and failure mileage were unknown.
We have a 2014 ford explorer that has a smell inside while accelerating. we have taken it to the dealer to have the problem corrected. our concern is that exhaust has been coming into the vehicle. we aren't sure if the current solutions in place to fix the vehicle are enough. well knowing and our family is getting sick from this current issue we just aren't sure what we're breathing inside the vehicle is safe. the smell comes when you accelerate hard either towing or merging onto the highway or even from a red light. the smell is a sulfur smell or rotten egg smell that seems to dissipate quickly but is noticeable.
Bought my 2014 explorer brand new from koons ford and right off the bat, the driver seats started squeaking at about 5k miles. they replaced the lower lumbar bar, which fixed it for another 2k miles and the seat started squeaking again. i gave up on this issue after a few more attempts to get it fixed. then about 6 months later, the lcd on my dash would stay on every now and then when i shut off and lock the car. took it back to koons and they claim they can't regenerate the issue and can't fix it. after 2 years, started hearing whinning/squealing noises from the rear wheels, koons also could not diagnose/fix. i gave up on koons and took it to ted britt, who also could not diagnose/fix. had my 45k service and told them about bad odor smell in the car at ted britt and they said everything is in great condition, 5k miles later, rear wheels has grinding noises when driving at low or high speeds and the bad odor is still around, my 8 year old son complains about the car giving him headaches. i took it back to ford and they said there is only a tsb so, the owners do not get notified, which i think, we as owners should be notified by the manufacture of any harmful substance lingering inside the car cabin and should be recalled and fixed at not cost to the owners. this is very unprofessional of the manufacture.
Nasty exhaust smell entering the cabin when merging on the interstate, driving up a long hill, or passing vehicles. this occurs when having to accelerate quickly -- high rpms for extended periods. smell appears to come from back to front and is difficult to get rid of. at first i thought it may be other vehicle's exhaust entering the cabin, however, after driving long periods in areas with no other vehicles around the exhaust stench continues. noted metallic taste in mouth after smelling odor vehicle.
My grandson went off the road at 70mph into some pine trees and completle severed the passagens wheel off and windshield completle destroyes roof damage and body damage and no air bags deployed. i talke to a customer who also had a 2014 explorer that was involved in a collision and their air bags didn't deploy either .the damage to my vehicle was on the front and the side yet no airbage deployed. something is wrong !!! its a miracle my grandson is alive i have pictures.
With rapid acceleration (getting on a highway) an odor comes into the vehicle. it used to have a more gasoline like smell, but we took the vehicle to the shop and they replaced a part. (not sure what part, but it was not under warranty.) we still have the smell but it is more chemically now. this happens every time we stomp on the gas. mostly it occurs when getting on the highway, but does occur when we pull out into traffic on regular roads and have the need for a quick acceleration. it takes several minutes for the odor to dissipate. sometimes it has been so strong my kids have started coughing. this has happened this we first bought the car. we originally thought it was coming from other vehicles around us, but when it happened with no vehicles around, we knew it was our explorer. i thought it was just us until someone mentioned their problem to my husband and now i see many people are having this same issue.
Exhaust smell in cabin. we experience a strong odor in the cabin when accelerating, typically while getting onto a highway or passing. it makes no difference if the windows are open or the ac is on. we don't drive this vehicle very much to date we have 28000 miles on it.
Smell exhaust fumes inside of suv at different times. smell occurs when pushing on the gas. car is in motion on any type of street or highway. dealership recommend replacing the power transfer unit($1,800) no change. still have smell
Sometimes when driving the vehicle, i smell exhaust fumes in the vehicle cabin. this occurs randomly. i notice it more frequently when accelerating between speeds upwards of, and above 45/50 mph and mostly on the highways. the vehicle is serviced regularly as per ford's recommendation by the same dealer where it was bought in november 2013 with 0 miles on it. this has been ongoing since the vehicle was bought.
Twice while driving (once accelerating to pull into traffic and once going up a mountain) an exhaust smell entered the cabin through the ac system and recirculating mode did not improve it. the vehicle was accelerating over 3500 rpms. i have tested this again and again and it happens every time under these conditions. i am very concerned as we just bought this vehicle a couple of months ago and have two young daughters. i will be taking it to our local dealership but based on these complaints i am not hopefull this will be resolved. *tr
Strong odor of exhaust fumes entering the cabin when accelerating. very concerned with diver and passengers safety. this has been occurring since it was new. i took it to the dealer over a year ago and they performed a repair that did not resolve the issue. they then told me ford was working on a fix and someone would contact me. i have yet to be contact and very concerned with constant exposure to the exhaust fumes. the need to take this seriously and give it a priority to fix this problem as i see there is a lot of people complaining of the same issue.
Upon acceleration the cabin smelled of exhaust fumes, it happens almost everyday and causes light headedness when driving. when getting up to speed on the highway the cabin fills with exhaust. *tr
When hard acceleration occurs, such as entering a freeway or going into passing gear to pass another vehicle, there is an extreme odor - very similar to rotten egg smell. this has occurred since the vehicle was ordered and purchased new. the vehicle was returned to the dealership for this problem, but after being on a waiting list for over 4 months, we were advised that there were no problems found. this vehicle was previously driven on a daily basis, to and from work 37 miles each way - in traffic. i had continual problems with smell and taste (exactly that of the fumes in the cabin) until such time that i began working from home and no longer forced to drive this vehicle on a daily basis. this prompted my research and this complaint of the known issue. i first reported this shortly after purchase around july of 2014. i did also send a complaint letter to ford - more to the service of the dealership - however i believe this issue was in that letter.
On a recent vacation to the northwoods of wisconsin, our 2014 explorer xlt (4x4 v6) was releasing a nauseating smell into the cabin under heavy loads, high rpms, or rapid accelerations. the trip was about 6 hours of solid driving, and by the 3rd hour my wife and i had pounding headaches and felt unwell. we immediately turned off the ac and opened the windows as i was able to duplicate the smell on the open highway. we spent the remainder of the vacation with limited ac, open windows, and ?cautious? driving to ensure the smell would not occur again. we were traveling with our 8 month old son and old english bulldog at the time and wanted to ensure they did not fall ill. i will be contacting my ford dealer to address the issue. *js
Each time after driving our ford explorer for a length of time with the air conditioning on, my wife and i begin to feel light headed, tired and sick. my wife is pregnant and we have severe concerns about the safety of driving our explorer due to the health risk of carbon monoxide leaking into the cabin. we are now aware of this problem with other explorers and are deeply concerned for our health and the health of our babies.
While driving my 2014 explorer sport i encountered a few problems with this truck, when i step on the gas to enter on to the freeway it got confused and did not no what to do . seems like it wanted to stall and then speed up violently. when i finally got up to speed it smelled like it farted, also my radio volume shuts off , i have to stop the car and turn it off , then start it and the volume comes back on. bring back the v8 please. *tr
Soon after buying my 14 ford explorer i noticed a strong exhaust smell in the cabin. i figured it was from vehicles in front of me so ran recirculate, still smelled in some cases overwhelming exhaust fumes causing a burning sensation to my eyes, headaches, sometimes severe and nausea. this vehicle is my office as well as my transportation since i cover the mid atlantic for my job. i have been hospitalized a handful of times for debilitating headaches and nausea. i travel 25k road miles plus air travel per year for my career and often am in the vehicle for 3 plus hours. the issue has been replicated at 2 dealerships. one service director said the miles i drive, the amount of fumes he, his service manager and master tech experienced in a short 15 minute test drive, that i should not be driving this vehicle and it is likely responsible for my debilitating headaches and need for hospital visits reminding me carbon monoxide can cause unconsciousness and worse. a gm of a ford dealership told me the repairs listed in the tsb are a bandaid and not successful most of the time. if it was fixed by replacing the ventilation why must they still undercoat the vehicle? because they need to seal underneath to prevent the fumes that still exist from entering cabin. i understand how carbon monoxide has caused my serious headaches, nausea and i could quickly and unknowingly go from the state of a headache to unconsciousness. that is unacceptable as i could kill others and myself. i currently do not drive this automobile yet continue to make monthly payments to pay for this potential death trap !!! it is shocking after learning of all the complaints that your agency (the national highway transportation safety administration) has not done more and that ford has not done anything other than repairs outlined in a tsb that do not resolve a severe life threatening potential deadly issue. *tr
I have had a problem since i got my leased 2014 explorer, when i hit the gas hard it would smell of exhaust fumes, at first i thought it was because it was new and would go away so i used to open the windows to let the smell out but it was quite bad so i had to pull away more slowly to avoid it or have a bad smell of fumes in the car, i would open the windows but its so hot in florida and it lets all the a/c out, my girlfriend kept telling me there is something wrong but i kept saying it will probably go away, i worked at a ford dealership and i asked the service department if they have had other complaints too they said there was nothing wrong, however she was right there is a problem and it has not gone away i will take it in on monday again and have them drive in the car with me to smell the fumes too then they may be able to fix it. ford have know about this problem for quite some time and they acted negligible in my honest opinion because they have know about this complaint why would they not inform customers who have purchased these vehicles to get them checked out for their safety and the long term effects from carbon monoxide fumes it could lead to cancer or respiratory issues and much more, there should be a recall for safety sake.
It was raining quite heavily all day and was raining when the misfire occurred. the vehicle would buck and jerk when i tried to accelerate. i had to pull over and restart the car and then finally the blinking engine went away. the engine on this car is a twin turbo 3.5l ecoboost. *js
I get a foul odor in the cabin on hard acceleration. i took it to the dealer and they did a fix but it did not help.they say they don't know what to do, it smells like exhaust is entering the cabin. help! make ford fix this .car was purchase new and i notice the problem on the way home from the dealer. *tr
For a little over a month my wife and i have been smelling gasoline periodically around the car. the last time i filled up i remember checking for a leak because the smell was so strong. that same night i was working around the vehicle and heard a sound coming from under the car. it was a significant amount of gasoline draining on top of the engine exhaust pipes and my driveway. it looked like the gas tank was leaking from a plastic fitting, periodically releasing about a cup full of gasoline. we have since taken the car into the dealership and they have identified the issue as an overflow component that is defective. i wanted to write an incident report with nhtsa because this is an extremely dangerous situation that i was lucky to catch. the car is my pregnant wife's daily driver along with my daughter as a passenger, so it really freaked me out to realize what could have happened! i am concerned that this situation may occur with other 2014 explorers and their owners not realizing the leak before a catistrophic event happens. the gas leak could easily go unnoticed, as we did not realize the leak until a month after the first warning signs (gaseline smell). after some research i found that the 2013 explorers had a recall on the fuel pumps, which could be related to this issue. *tt
Since i've owned my 2014 ford explorer for the past six months i get sulfur smelling exhaust fumes coming from the a/c vents when quickly accelerating even if the a/c is in recirc mode and even when the fuel tank is not full. it is definitely exhaust odors and not fuel odors. *tr
Sulfur or rotten egg smell while going up a hill when the vehicle has to downshift into a lower gear. also when accelerating rapidly like on a on ramp to the interstate. i call a ford dealer and they acted like they had no clue of the problem. we ended up selling the vehicle and losing money and this was one of the reasons to sell. i have seen many more claims online about this and on social media and wanted to report that i have had the same problem as well.
