We have classified the 47 complaints from 2014 Ford Explorer about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
The apin (navigation/display) system on this vehicle constantly blanks out so you loose all saftey information. gps constantly goes off course meaning your driving down a road and it has you floating off to the side of the road half a mile away and 1/3 mile behind or ahead of your location. this causes numerous re-routes including those that might not be safe to conduct. the heads up display system constantly blanks out and resets loosing all saftey information, sometimes it stays blank a long time. ford had extended the warranty for apin system they know is faulty to 5 years i took my vehicle into service both under warranty i paid deductible for as well as in 2018 to have it repaired; they applied the same updates over and over and refused to replace the faulty apin system. ford now refuses to assist and i feel this is major saftey concern, not only does the product just not function properly but i feel are major saftey concerns when the displays all blank out and reset or do not come back on... this occurs while driving. ford refuses to fix the problem and allowed the extended warranty they offered to lapse so that they could wash their hands of it. i feel this faulting system could result into a crash of some kind by distracting the driver when blanking out; rerouting improperly onto roads that do not exist. and so on.. this is constantly happening and sometimes it wont happen but a few months a part and other times it will happen several times a day with in each other.
When my car idles for 3-5 minutes, dash board starts dinging and all sensors light up. cold air turns into hot hair, gages stop working, if i turn off the car the car won't start back up until 15-20 minutes later. this happens more in the summer time then winter. so far this month- july it's happened 5 times.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford explorer. while driving various speeds, the air bag warning indicator illuminated continuously. the vehicle was taken to bill alexander ford lincoln mercury (801 e 32nd st, yuma, az 85365) where it was diagnosed that the connector under the front driver and passenger seats were faulty and needed to be repaired. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 90,000.
Driver visor mirror and buttons for garage door opener failed to function in 2018. dealer replaced the visor. first week of may of 2019 visor mirror and garage door buttons are on the replacement visor are not functioning. also the lights on the side mirrors that inform you that another vehicle is approaching work only occasionally. the vehicle is parked in the garage. the other visor mirror is function correctly.
When driving in heavy rain or snow, i get a warning on my dash saying low battery mode, and then i lose all functions, including power steering, collision warning, lights on my dash and display. it has happened numerous times. everytime it rains or snows i suffer with this issue.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford explorer. the contact stated that the steering wheel would sporadically tighten and the "steering assist fault" and "check charging system" indicators illuminated. an independent mechanic referred the contact to brandon ford (9090 e adamo dr, tampa, fl 33619, (813) 246-3673) where it was diagnosed that a new alternator was needed. the contact had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic for a second opinion. the mechanic replaced the alternator. the failure recurred and the contact called the dealer who informed her that the alternator should have been replaced with one from the manufacturer. the vehicle was not repaired again. the contact was concerned that the dealer was recommending a higher repair bill. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 100,000.
The electronic door locks on the vehicle will either stay unlocked or locked and it makes it very difficult to get in and out of the vehicle. for example i pulled up to my infant sons daycare to drop him off for the day, the rear passenger door would not unlock, no matter if i used the key fob or the buttons on the inside of the front door, the lock would not pull up from the inside either i eventually had to pull him out of the vehicle thru the front passenger door.
The electrical system periodically goes out, the dash lights blink off and on, alrms go off with messages that state there is a failure of terrain, management, abs system and power steering, then the power steering goes out immediately , dash is black. this is very dangerous , it seems to be a known issue with ford when researching the issue. someone can wreck and die with this electrical failure
Throttle body actuator drove my car around all morning, got gome let it sit for a fee goirs went to go back to town and it started skipping, i had no power to my gas peddle, the engine amd wrench light came on and i could notndrive my car.
Won't turn off when turn off button is pushed to turn vehicle off, we have to keep pressing button on gear shift and it has taken 35 minutes to turn it off which just happend today oct. 30, 2018 it has raised the driver seat twice all by iteself while the vehicle has been turned off and no one is in the vehicle when this has happened. it makes odd noises inside the dash when vehicle is turned off
Air bag warning light came on. brought in to heritage ford modesto ca. was diagnosed that the wire harnesses for the rear driver and passenger seats needed to be replaced. was informed that it is not covered by any factory recall despite being a common defect and safety issue. mileage at time of service 62,000 miles. cost $565.00
Driver door ajar light is constantly coming on. the indoor lights do not power down for a few minutes. the alarm bell rings periodically while in motion indicating the door is ajar. the doors will not lock. this happens periodically on the highway as well as driving around town. when in park, the alarm bell will beep twice to indicate the door ajar signal is on, but the door is locked. this has happened several times within the last six months.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford explorer. the contact stated that the air bag warning indicator illuminated, which was a safety concern. the vehicle was taken to the local dealer (autonation ford arlington, 1400 i-20 w, arlington, tx 76017, (817) 200-4503) where it was diagnosed that the wire harnesses for the rear driver and passenger seats needed to be repaired. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to nhtsa. the failure mileage was 60,000.
The driver door ajar warning light remains on even thought the door is firmly closed. the warning light prevents the doors to lock while the car is in motion. when the car is not in motion and the warning light is on, the key fob alarm does not engage therefore inviting car theft. the warning light issue began when the odometer reached approximately 56,000 miles.
40,000 miles into a new car, rear brakes are completely worn down. the passenger side needed a new temperature door actuator to allow the climate control to work properly.
When we first received the vehicle we went on a road trip to az and the computer completely blacked out on the dash and the suspension was super wobbly. so we called to make an appt to bring it in as soon as we got back in to town but it was a 2 week wait for an appt. they kept our car for three weeks and as soon as we got it back it was the same problem. so we asked to make another appt and this time they kept our car for a whole month and got it back and the same problem. any little bump or indent in the road and the car is wobbly all over sounds like the bearings. we have yet to get it fixed and i seen there was a recall on 2014 ford explorers for the rear bearings. i called the number for recalls and they said they didn't see one for this vin but it's the same problem from the recall in 2016 for the same year vehicles.
Ford my key function disappeared from system. car could not go over 80mph.
While vehicle in motion,, on highwasy at 70 miles per hour dash borad light went completely out for 15 or 20 seconds. this even happened three times. all three times car was on high way performing at 70i;es an hours or better.
Driver side door ajar light continues to come on each time i start the car. i have to open and shut the door to get it to turn off. that occurred for one month. now the light will not turn off and the "transmission is not in park" light turns on while i am driving. in addition, the dome lights will not go off when i park the car unless i constantly adjust the light dial and eventually the dome light will go off when the doors are locked (30 minutes to get it off the other night). regarding the rear transmission noise. over 50 percent of the time when i am backing out of a parking spot, i hear a clunking sound as though i struck an object only to find that nothing is behind me. finally, when i enter my car and start it, i hear a loud popping sound in the front windshield like the windshield glass is cracking. no idea what that may be.
The power control locks have quit functioning. it started with the front driver side door, and 2 months later it started happening on the back driver side door as well. the key fob does not work for unlocking the doors. the door lock on the door panel does that lock/unlock the doors either. you have to manually lock/unlock the doors by hand. the issue with the front driver side door started about 6 months ago. the issue with the back driver side door started about a month ago. both issues are still happening.
For a significant amount of the vehicle's life, the airbag light has illuminated a majority of the time. i did not believe this was an issue as i was instructed that a light would come on if the vehicle thought something/someone was in the passenger seat, but did not meet minimum weight requirements. it has come to my attention when my vehicle was in for a non-related repair, that this is not the case and that the light actually indicates a fault with the airbag system. so i have been driving around for probably 40,000 miles with faulty airbags in the car in which i am the original owner. i called ford who expressed little to zero concern until i let them know i would be filing a complaint. according to the dealer, the issue is that the connectors are corroded (the indication was multiple connectors are corroded). this seems like a really big issue - i live in oregon, so not quite a dry climate, but it's not abnormal. the person i spoke to at ford was named "ann"
Heat on passenger side not working at all causing the window on that side to not be able to be seen out of when driving the car in the cold. only put cold air out on that side. spoke to someone at ford and was told it was a problem just not in my car yet.
The open door light stays on even after slamming the drive door shut. this only happens with the driver side door.
The dash reads transmission not in park while the shifter is in park position. there is a technical service bulletin regarding this issue but the dealer refused to repair the issue due to the vehicle warranty being expired. tsb 15-0047
The "door ajar" light will stay on whether i am stationary or driving. i have had to open and shut the door 5 to 7 times sometimes to get it to shut off. no matter how soft or hard i shut the door it won't shut off. if i don't shut it off the interior light will stay on.
Multiple sensor failures while car was in motion. vehicle would not recognize that the transmission was in park. climate control sensor failed, resulting in temperatures being increased to the maximum heat. this happened while the vehicle was in motion on a highway. windshield wiper fluid sensor failed and did not recognize that there was fluid in the receptacle. this happened while in motion. sensor on dual climate control failed and was blowing hot air at the passenger and cold air at the driver. this happened while in motion.
The car is little under three years old and the door panel is coming apart around the window. another issue is the smell of carbon dioxide when i accelerate. and another issue is the hood is showing rust spot (showing oxidization)
The door ajar light and warning stays on even when the door is completely shut. this makes the interior lights stay on which causes a problem, especially when driving at night. it also prevents you from locking the doors when inside and because the dome lights stay on it drains the battery. from what i've researched online this is a common problem among ford vehicles and needs to be fixed.
The electric moonroof stopped working and would not open. the sun shade would partially close. we changed the fuse but the moonroof still would not work. so were leaving it alone until the weather warmed up. this morning i went out to go to work and my moonroof was standing open and my car was standing in water and leaves. no one had driven the car in 3 days. i am a 50+ year old female and try to be very particular with my vehicle. i rarely use the moonroof itself, but i do open the sun shield at times in the past. i do not know how the moonroof opened, if there was a power surge or what??? i have searched the internet this morning and found this had happened to other individuals.
When there is a heavy rain the serpentine belt squeals at various moments, for short periods of time. this has been going on since i purchased the vehicle in 2014 , but dealership said it was a known issue and there was nothing they could do about it. they said it was due to the belt getting wet and ford didn't know how to prevent it from happening, and that it occurs on other ford trucks too. my other issue has started recently happening to when it rains heavily, the "low battery features tempor. turned off" notification comes on and my steering wheel locks up briefly while driving. i checked my battery connects as the manual says to do and they are fine. this only occurs during heavy rain and it happens at various times during driving. it never just stays on, but will turn on and go off at different times during the drive in the heavy rain. seems like something is getting wet causing a shortage, but either way its dangerous when my steering wheel locks up.
Door ajar indicator stay on although the doors are closed.
Driver's door ajar warning is activated and no door is ajar. this vehicle is equipped with automatic locking doors, which do not lock as a result. i am aware that ford has been given a pass on recalls for this but this is a problem known to ford since 2011. i believe ford should be required to make repairs, even after the new car warranty is expired.this is an obvious mfg defect, and the mfg should be accountable for the life of the vehicle. i imagine ford has been given a pass on recalls because they negotiated a deal, and probably indicated they would repair all reported defects rather than have a complete recall of all models using this same warning system, with the same parts. the local dealer told me ford will repair as necessary for cars under warranty, but not after warranty period. this defect affects several models of ford vehicles, for several known years, and ford should be required to replace the defect, for all models, for all years, as long as the problem manifests itself in operating vehicles manufactured by ford.to my knowledge, there have been more than 2700 similar complaints, and more than 33,000 warranty claims.that's over 35,000 known defective vehicles, which does not include thos that owners have simply had repaired withpout complaint.
Door ajar alerts with the door shut. i have to open and slam door to get it to clear. i know this is a common issue and ford needs to open a recall on this. i do not feel like paying 400 dollars for something they know is messed up due to poor quality.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford explorer. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start and stalled intermittently. the vehicle started only after the battery was charged. the contact also stated that the heating system became inoperable and the check engine, service traction, and battery warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but was unable to be started or diagnosed. the dealer diagnosed that the battery needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the throttle body failed. the throttle body was replaced and reprogrammed, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 47,412. *tr
Drivers door ajar light stays on. took to ford dealer, was told that fmco requires they clean contacts first, before replacing. this was done and solved the problem for a while. i took back to dealer when problem started again. now they say the door latch is broken and want $366.00 to fix it, and they have to order the part. this is an ongoing problem with ford products and they have in fact recalled several models. i was given the impression to start with that if the contact cleaning procedure didn't work then it would be replaced. now they want to charge for this.
Bought my 2014 explorer brand new from koons ford and right off the bat, the driver seats started squeaking at about 5k miles. they replaced the lower lumbar bar, which fixed it for another 2k miles and the seat started squeaking again. i gave up on this issue after a few more attempts to get it fixed. then about 6 months later, the lcd on my dash would stay on every now and then when i shut off and lock the car. took it back to koons and they claim they can't regenerate the issue and can't fix it. after 2 years, started hearing whinning/squealing noises from the rear wheels, koons also could not diagnose/fix. i gave up on koons and took it to ted britt, who also could not diagnose/fix. had my 45k service and told them about bad odor smell in the car at ted britt and they said everything is in great condition, 5k miles later, rear wheels has grinding noises when driving at low or high speeds and the bad odor is still around, my 8 year old son complains about the car giving him headaches. i took it back to ford and they said there is only a tsb so, the owners do not get notified, which i think, we as owners should be notified by the manufacture of any harmful substance lingering inside the car cabin and should be recalled and fixed at not cost to the owners. this is very unprofessional of the manufacture.
I bought my 2014 ford explorer in november of 2015. i noticed a rotten egg/ exhaust smell as the weather became warmer. anytime i would accelerate up a hill or accelerate on a flat stretch of road during the summer months was when the smell is the worst. i have to roll down all of the windows. i no longer allow my children to ride in the third row because they would complain on the longer car rides of having a headache. i have taken this to the dealership on 3 occasions now. they have told me they have tried to reproduce my complaint, and have failed to do so. i am currently going to that the service manager on a ride tomorrow to reproduce this smell. the smell has been so bad at times that i personally have felt like i was going to be sick. there is something seriously wrong with the explorers having this smell. something needs to be done. i am at the point that i do not put my kids in my car anymore then i have to. i have had to apologize on several occasions to my friends about the smell. ford needs to figure this out!! *tr
The driver door continues to sound alarm of door ajar, slam the door and still the same, very annoying when driving because it won't stop
I bought a certitified preowned 2014 ford explorer in february 2015. recently every time the explorer was put in park, an alert would go off, showing transmission not in park. the past few weeks the steering wheel would make a grinding/growling noise when turning towards the left and right. the steering became a little harder to turn and it felt as if it would stick. this was a very scary feeling. i have 5 children and didn't want them in this car. i took the car to the dealership 2 days ago and found out that my electric steering system was locked, the gear shift assembly needed replacing and also a new belt. total cost $2,309.30. i was devastated. we do not have that kind of money laying around. i called the ford manufacturer and they gave me a case number to give to the dealership. after speaking with the dealership and giving the case number, they called back later and stated they would give me a $300 discount. therefore at this time, i had to take a $1500 loan out for the electrical power steering replacement and belt. i will have to go without the gear shift assembly being repaired until we can afford it. my total without replacing the gear shift assembly is $1696.30. after researching the issue, this is nothing new with the ford explorers. there were several recalls for the same issue for the 2011 through 2013 models. my 2014 ford explorer has a 100,000 mile power train warranty but of course none of this was covered. i am saving my receipts in hopes ford will do the right thing. if they do not, i will never purchase another ford. this issues has put my family in danger and in further debt.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford explorer. while driving 75 mph, the vehicle stalled and the low oil pressure warning light illuminated. the vehicle was restarted several times and the failure recurred. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the air flow sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 15,000. ma 10/6 updated 12/21/15. *jb
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford explorer. while driving 35 mph, an exhaust odor emitted into the vehicle through the front and rear air vents during acceleration. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the muffler was replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. in addition, the instrument panel failed to illuminate while driving 20 mph. the contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road and the gear shifter seized. the contact restarted the vehicle and drove home. once the contact arrived at home, the vehicle lost power, the alarm and horn sounded, and the tailgate opened. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the gear shifter was replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the approximate failure mileage was 24,191. updated 05/03/16*lj
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford explorer. while the vehicle was parked and attempting to open the front passenger and driver side windows, both windows began to vibrate causing the vehicle to shake without warning. the failure recurred each time the windows were opened. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but the failure was unable to be determined. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 40,000.
When applying full braking at a stop sign or red light the vehicle stops but the engine and transmission continue to race at full speed. the brake pulsates like the anti lock braking system is engaged. in order to get the vehicle back to normal the engine must be shut off or the transmission disengaged. it will then start up normally. we have had 11 occasions within the past 2 months where this has occurred, this has occurred when coming down from highway long distance driving and it has also happened on a parking lot very low speed. it is all i could do to press hard enough on the brakes to stop. the vehicle has been returned to the dealership, their diagnostics show nothing and the dealership states they must be able to experience the problem first (duplicate it). ford motor company has been called the regional sales manager told me to take the vehicle to another ford dealership to have them look at it. mr. mchale the manager at fmc (866-631-3788 ext. 77713) assigned a case number 7644437 to the problem but he also stated that they would have to duplicate the problem before it could be resolved. i told him if i misjudge or am unable to bring the vehicle to a stop that i may be pushing up daisies. they do not seem to understand the severity of the problem. it would seem to me that a mechanic would look for a sensor or switch that would disengage the trans mission when the brake was applied or a sensor or control that slows the engine. i am getting to the point i fear for my life driving this vehicle until it is repaired. i also mentioned that when i turn the vehicle off during the incident there is a lot of clunking from the engine and transmission, i am sure damage has been done to them. *cn
My used 2014 explorer sport that was bought in october of 2014 with less than 8000 miles keeps telling me the transmission is not in park when it clearly is. this use to happen on occasion but now it is constant. i have also had problems with the instrument panel on dashboard just going black when driving. it really doesn't have to be any speed. this has happened several times and it can be kind of scary especially when driving on freeway in heavy traffic. my windshield wiper blades (less than a year old) act like the are going to fly off the car when turned on. the wipers just don't seem like they are attached right. but they are and i have replaced them with ford recommended parts more than once. the most annoying problem with the car is the exhaust smell that is always there. i thought is was just me being overly sensitive to odors. but i noticed others complaining of the odor as well. the odor comes all the time. there really is not distinct rpm when it happens it is just always there. i have not taken my car in for repairs due to a previous bad experience with a different vehicle. i can handle all the problems with the car but the exhaust smell is so bad and gives me a headache if i'm in the car to long.
While driving my 2014 explorer sport i encountered a few problems with this truck, when i step on the gas to enter on to the freeway it got confused and did not no what to do . seems like it wanted to stall and then speed up violently. when i finally got up to speed it smelled like it farted, also my radio volume shuts off , i have to stop the car and turn it off , then start it and the volume comes back on. bring back the v8 please. *tr
Vehicle stopped to let passengers off. stopped engine. restarted the engine, started to pull away from curve and power steering failed and received steering assist fault alarm. vehicle was subsequently driven with no power steering. also, noted the following: terrain management fault, service advanced track. another related failure is that the signal lights no longer would stay on when initiated creating an additional safety issue. took vehicle to ford shop and they stated that the power steering gear would have to be replaced. they reported that they had one on order and would be available for installation in 3-weeks. upon searching the web, found that ford has had this, or similar problems with 2011-2013 power steering and has just issued a recall for 2011-2013 vehicles. had this failure happened during a u-turn or a front tire failure at highway speed, it would likely have ended up with a serious accident. in addition, this is a vehicle designed to go off-road. if a failure of this type occurred off road, serious damage to the vehicle or occupant injury could occur. this is a serious issue that, on the surface, appears to have been going on for several years. *tr
I have had multiple electrical problems with this vehicle and safety issues. electrical- audio output fails intermittently, power outlets short out, instrument cluster fails (while moving and in park) exhaust- fumes coming inside vehicle (in motion and park) brakes- had to have entire system replaced after complete failure of abs system (happened multiple times while in motion, once on expressway, all reported to ford corporate) wheels - lug nuts have been reported multiple times for moisture collecting inside the lug nuts and causing corrosion seat belts - housing case of safety belts pop off idle - when idling with brake depressed and a door opened and closed the idle skips and makes noise washer fluid sensor - failed at 70, 000 miles ac system drains power horribly vehicle was leased january 2014 problems have been consisten since that date, all records are in ford's system.
The instrument cluster lcd display screens to the left and right of the speedometer malfunction. they will randomly turn off for approximately 5-60 seconds while driving. the flashing screens can be a great distraction while driving during the day and especially at night. *tr
Purchased 2014 ford explorer july 20, 2014 - july 26,2014 - i was pulling away from drive thru pharmacy and my dash lights went black. took my vehicle into service the next morning - they could not find anything wrong. my vehicle has been back 6 more times. once again for loosing all dash lights driving down the road - since then, my lighting in my vehicle does not light up as it use to. sometimes my dash lights come on when opening the driver door, sometimes they do not - sometimes my lcd screen will light up, sometimes it does not. the dealership has replaced the instrument cluster once, but i feel there is still an issue. it all my dash lights lit up for the first 6 days of owning the vehicle, why would they not all light up now after the incident of losing the dash lights??? i have asked for a replacement vehicle - as after speaking with an attorney i have a lemon law claim, a safety claim, and a warranty claim. if my vehicle does not get replaced or some money back from ford - as i have drove my car for 13 full days out of a month - i will be taking this to court as i can only see further issues down the road. *tr
