Problems with 2006 Ford Expedition ENGINE

On average, the 2006 Ford Expedition starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 110 039 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2006 Ford Expedition

Upon receiving tune up the spark plugs broke apart.after getting them out cyl#1 would not hold spark plug, caused me to spend more money to get problem fixed.but the shops will not guarantee the work that is needed.they all said it was a factory issue.the truck was stationary as well.

Tl* the contact called on behalf of the owner of a 2006 ford expedition. when the vehicle was started, there was an odor of antifreeze in the vehicle. additionally, the temperature gauge and cylinder head temperature switch became inoperable. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the intake manifold and cylinder head temperature switch needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 245,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. while driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle's speed decelerated to 20 mph. the contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road and turned off the engine. once restarted, the vehicle was able to operate normally. the contact stated that the failure recurred after driving 30 miles down the road and the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 196,997.

Tamara recall

Ford had a recall for broken spark plugs & a class action lawsuit on this vehicle. ford has failed to fully compensate us & told me hardly no one would receive compensation. we replaced the plugs with ford approved revised plugs at ford with @ 149k miles on 11/2015. the engine codes or problems would come up now and again & we had it into various vendors.. 2/ 2017, driving back to wyoming i came up an i was under load (hauling a trailer) and the auto almost did not make it home or up a grade. we took it in to replace the coils. the vendor, midway motors replaced the coil & noticed the new revised ford approved spark plug 5 was broken, and plug 6 also showed a code, (mileage 172627 miles). the engine was damaged so we traded the ford in for a dodge. my point ford has not fixed the issue & is deceiving the public. and 2nd lawsuit claim form is [xxx] . the vehicle was kept in like new shape pristine. i was sad i had to trade it in but did not feel safe. i think you need to know how ford is practicing and not handling ethically, legally, or properly; both the class action lawsuit and also the (revised spark plugs are also failing). yes i have detailed documents!! ask me i can email you pdf [xxx] [xxx] . information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).'*jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. while driving or while the vehicle was idling, the contact heard a ticking noise coming from the engine. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer (ken grody ford at 6211 beach blvd, buena park, ca 90621) where it was diagnosed that the valve lash adjuster and the timing chain tensioners needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer informed the contact to call nhtsa and did not offer any further assistance. the failure mileage was 100,464.

While in traffic, at least 100 times in the last four years (at variable speeds from 5 to 65 mph on city streets and freeways) most recently twice in the last week, the rpms drop below 500 and the vehicle dies and "engine failsafe mode" lights up on the dash. i have to either coast to pull over or dead stop in the middle of the road. i have to turn the vehicle completely off (even though in failsafe mode engine is off, the electronics are still on) and then restart and then it will drive just fine until it happens again. it happens anywhere from once every 6 months to 6 times in 1 week. it seems as though if i drive with both feet in traffic and maintain about 800-1000 rmps at all times it doesn't do this, however this cannot be done all the time especially when trying to stop the large vehicle quickly or turning in an intersection. nothing has been diagnosed by dealership as no codes are thrown. i also own a obd2 reader and no codes have ever listed unless its time to change the spark plugs. several different mechanics, forums and brainstorming has not figured it out. i have replaced mostly everything with exception to a new transmission and computer. mostly everything including wires and vacuum lines and gaskets have been replaced due to maintenance or repairs from everything else that has gone wrong with it. i have put about $10k into new parts for this vehicle. i bought it with 60k miles on it and it now has 117k, its a daily driver with 28 miles of travel 5 days a week. also the only vehicle that fits all of the children for soccer, track and volleyball traveling tournaments/games. luckily it doesn't happen very often when i'm not in traffic so the kids aren't usually with me but it is very scary not to know if you are going to stop or if the people behind you are going to hit you or not.

Engine fail safe mode engages at various and unpredictable speeds and at any given time. it has happened numerous times and shows no code afterwards. a very dangerous issue that needs to be addressed by ford. i have found thousands of complaints about this issue but i can find no indication that ford has been willing to address the issue. when asked for the date the incident happened i am entering the date of complaint because this has happened multiple times. no codes does not mean the vehicle doesn't have issues. ford needs to address this issue....recall and correct the problem.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. the contact stated that while the driver was driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle stalled as the fail safe mode warning message illuminated across the instrument panel. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 194,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. the contact stated that the engine fail safe mode warning light flashed and the vehicle drastically reduced speed and stalled without warning. the contact had to apply force to coast the vehicle off the road. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the computer needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 140,000.

My 2006 ford expedition's "engine failsafe mode" initiated and alerted me while i was operating the vehicle, which resulted in the vehicle shutting down completely and losing all power. my main issue/concern with this is that i lost steering and a significant amount of braking power. fortunately, i was on a side road and was able to safely pull over out of harm's way. the vehicle was able to start a couple of tries later, and i was able to get the vehicle into a service shop safely, which was over an hour away. i cannot help but be grateful for getting home safely, but am very concerned about these vehicles experiencing such issues as they traverse major thoroughfares, especially on a highway traveling around 70mph. this potentially posed very impactful consequences and puts myself, friends/family traveling with me, and other motorists.

While driving on a highway at 60 mph and on a city street at 40 mph the vehicle without any warning shuts off and goes into engine fail safe mode, the vehicle still has braking and steering and after turning ignition key to off then on it restarts and drives fine. this vehicle has 120,000 miles on it .

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. while driving 50 mph, the engine light illuminated, the vehicle lost power, jerked, and stalled. the contact had to restart the vehicle to resume normal operation. in addition, while driving at 50 mph, the vehicle repeatedly slow down and accelerate. the failure recurred a few times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the spark plugs needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 158,307.

While taking my kids to daycare the engine fail safe light came on and the engine shut down. i was sitting at a light waiting to go straight under a bridge and at this particular light only one lane can go straight since the engine shut down and i could not move this caused major backup. luckily there was an emergency vehicle a few cars behind and he was able to push me through the light and into a parking lot. after a few minutes of sitting there the truck started and i was able to get them to daycare and continue on to work. very dangerous situation and something should be done.

My vehicle has completely shut down in the middle of driving on several occasions. i have had diagnostic reports run and they do not find any problems. the first time i was going 45 mph and was able to coast into a sonic. i waited about 15 minutes and the car started back up. the second time was at a gas station and my car would not start. i had a diagnostic run and was told it was my battery. i replaced the battery and my vehicle died again the next day, but started back up one i let it sit for a few minutes. this morning i was pulling into a parking lot at work and it died. after about 10 minutes it started back up and i was able to pull into a parking spot. i went to leave for lunch and now my vehicle will not start at all. this could have been much worse if i were driving down the interstate and the car shut off on me like it has done other times. i have two children and the thought of them in this car does not make me feel safe!!

I was driving down the freeway approximately 50 mph when my engine completely shut down. there was a beep and a light came on that said "enginer fail safe mode". the engine shut off, but luckily i still had full movement of my steering wheel so i was able to change lanes and get off to the shoulder. i panicked for a moment, but started the car and it started right back up. i attempted my drive to work and made it there. not sure what to do about the problem, but i'm scared to drive it anymore. especially with my children in the vehicle and my husband is out of town for work. this is a major safety issue and needs to be recalled.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. the contact stated that the engine fail safe mode warning indicator randomly flashed. the vehicle's speed reduced and stalled several times. the vehicle was taken to a manufacturer's master mechanic for further diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was not available.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. while driving 35 mph, the vehicle suddenly lost power and the "engine fail safe mode" warninig illuminated on the instrument panel. the contact coasted to the side of the road and shut off the engine. the vehicle was restarted after a few minutes, but the warning indicator recurred. the contact called a local dealer who was unable to explain the failure, but asked to see the vehicle for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 95,962.

I have had two situations where my suv engine expectedly shuts off. 1.) while driving in stop and go traffic 2.) turning into a parking lot after putting the suv in park, i can immediate turn back on.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. while driving 45 mph, the vehicle lost power. when the accelerator pedal was depressed, the vehicle failed to accelerate and the rpms increased. the check engine and service vehicle soon warning lights illuminated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 141,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. while driving at approximately 35 mph, the "engine safe fail mode" warning message illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer who was unable to determine the failure. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 190,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. while driving 60 mph, the vehicle made a rattling noise. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the vehicle's engine needed to be repaired or replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 194,549.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. while driving 65 mph, the engine warning light illuminated and flickered when accelerating. the failure recurred intermittently. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 164,500.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. while parked, the vehicle stalled shortly after being started. the contact was able to restart the vehicle, but the engine warning indicator illuminated. this was a recurring failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 111,000.

First occurrence exhibited flickering dashboard lights before the electrical system went completely dead and the engine quit while accelerating at approximately 20 mph. put vehicle in neutral and was able to restart engine normally before coming to a stop. have experienced several short instances of dash flickering over the past couple of weeks with no apparent engine problems. during that same period there have been approximately 4 instances of the electrical system being completely dead upon the initial attempt to start the engine. when this happens, the only light that is illuminated on the dash (or anywhere else for that matter) is what i think is the airbag light; however, normal electrical power has, thus far, re-appeared within 5 minutes and the engine then starts and runs normally. yesterday the "check engine" light came on and i was able to pull a code of p0119 (engine coolant temperature circuit intermittent) upon returning home. i subsequently cleared the code, but the reader indicates another code is "pending". i believe this is a symptom of a larger problem. i have not experienced a "engine failsafe mode" warning message, but this complaint is very similar to many others already posted and i agree with the related safety concerns and need for a recall. *tr

Driving down highway at 45 mph when engine fail safe mode came on. with no power, had to veer off to a turn lane put in park and restart car. this is the second time this has happened. first was on highway as well around 40 mph, same thing happened; no power had to veer off to the side of the highway, park and restart car. extremely dangerous to be driving on a busy highway and have expedition shut off completely. *tr

I was driving about 25-30mph and making a left turn. the vehicle suddenly shut off. i had no power steering or anything. it was totally off and stopped in the middle of the road. if a car had been coming it would have hit us. i was able to turn off the key, put it in park and start it up and pull off the road. i decided to carefully try to get home. on the way home i was stopped at a red light and it shut off again, no warning. i was blocking traffic. i was again able to turn off the key, put it in park, and start it up. i made it home a short distance. this is very dangerous and someone could get killed on a highway by a car randomly shutting off and becoming unsteerable. *tr

Was driving about 35 mph when engine fail safe mode came on and truck just shut off. this happened 4 times between location and home. almost got rearended when it happened. *js

Engine frequently goes in to engine failsafe mode. this happens typically when the car is being lightly throttled such as around corners or in rush hour traffic. the car restarts fine, but must be completely turned off, which disables airbags, makes power steering and power brakes impossible to use. previously i have cleaned the throttle body of the car at the suggestion of numerous mechanics, and this resolved the issue for nearly a year. now the problem is back again. i'm concerned for my wife's safety. the throttle body needs to be redesigned as the throttle plate sticking returning invalid data to the computer sending the engine into failsafe mode. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. the contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle jerked and lost power as the check engine warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. the contact stated that the electronic throttle control and the service engine warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle stalled, but was able to be restarted and resume normal operation. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 120,000.

As i am driving down the road i lose power and deaccelerate and go into fail safe mode. the little wrench light comes on the dash. then the engine cuts off completely. this has happened at multiple speeds. it is extremely dangerous! once i turn the key off i restart the engine and it may not happen again for a month. i replaced the throttle position sensor and it did not do this for about a year, now it is starting again and it has happened 5 times in the last 3 months. it has happened at 65mph, 40mph, 25mph, 55mph, 30 mph. there is no pattern. i have been lucky that i have been able to pull over to the side of the road or turn into a parking lot each time this happens, it scares me! i have read multiple accounts of this happening online to the 2006 and wonder why it has not been recalled if there are so many problems with it. i have taken it to ford twice and bc the light does not stay on and it is not happening when i bring it to them they tell me there is nothing they can do. *tr

The car stalled while turning no warning at 25mph start and shut does it 6 times going home. *js

Engine just shuts off, especially at a stand still & a/c on. not as often if a/c is not on. *tr

Driving in town on four lane at 45 mph. fail safe light appeared and engine cut off and lost power steering. almost rear ended as there was no place to pull off the road! engine was restarted and did not occur again while returning home. *tr

2006 expedition fail safe mode came on while driving my children to school. car immediately slowed to under 10mph. was barely able to pull over and restart it. thank goodness i was not on the expressway doing 60+ mph. there are numerous complaints on this issue with this car. it was very scary! *tr

Was driving down off ramp lost all power to the vehicle, no steering, no brakes. i had my 3 children in the vehicle with me and thankfully i was able to cost to the shoulder until help arrived. extremely scary had it happen 2 minutes earlier would of been off the ramp and into oncoming traffic! this is unacceptable!! my mechanic says it's the fuel pump, and just the part is 500 dollars?!? this could of ended very badly and i have had nothing but issues with this piece of junk. the paint is peeling off, looks like no primer or sealer was used it literally is flaking off on the hood and rear gate right where you would put your hands to open it. in the manual in very small print it says the oil from your fingers may cause paint to corrode, are you kidding me??? your not supposed to open your hood or tailgate??? ridiculous!! this vehicle in my opinion is a lemon!! *tr

As i was driving my expedition, the truck suddenly shut completely off and i had to power steering and then in the message center it showed "engine failsafe mode". i had to put my flashers on and coast to a stop in the lane i was in and come to a complete stop before i could restart my truck. i was unable to switch lanes or move to a safer location because i had no power steering. i had the same thing happen in march of 2009 when i was going 60 on the interstate in the middle lane and lost all power and had to coast to a stop in that lane with my flashers on hoping everyone around me would see i was having car trouble. i had 3 of my kids in the truck with me. in 2009 i took it into the ford dealership and they said it was the throttle body and replaced it which cost me $536.00. in 2009 it happened 5 times before it was fixed. i took the truck in today and they said again its the throttle body and because it's been 5 years the other one is no longer under warranty. so now i'm getting a new throttle body put in. i emailed ford corporate and was basically told that there is no current recall nor plans for one so there's nothing they can do for me! *tr

This is the second incident: the fist was about 3 months ago. i was driving down a residential street yesterday when the "fail safe mode" indicator came on and said engine shutting down. car turns off, cannot steer. very dangerous. i was on a residential street and was able to pull off. turned the car off for a few minutes and it started and i drove to work, but the engine light remained on. i took it to an auto parts store who ran it and it came up as throttle body forces immediate idle. which is exactly what the 10 pages on complaints on carcomplaints.com said it would say - however information on that site also said it's actually the fuel pump modulator, but the computer did not indicate that at all. there were almost 60 complaints of the same situations - when i pulled out into traffic today the car 'hesitated' and did not accelerate correctly. the first incident occurred on a major highway - and again i was lucky enough to be in the right lane and was able to pull over. this defect is going to cause an injury or even death and it needs to be recalled and corrected. i will be contacting ford corporate; but with the recent incidents with gm i would hate to see an accident or fatality occur when ford and others are aware of this problem. obviously i have to get this fixed, i'm hoping my ford dealer will work with me, but i have a 4 year old so time is of the essence and i'm guessing money will be too. regardless of ford's corporate response, i will be contacting the media. this is a safety issue and is unacceptable that ford is not taking responsibility. *tr

I was driving around 46mph, and in the middle of driving, my truck cut off for around 5 seconds. i almost got by the truck behind me. my truck kicked back on by itself, all why i was driving. i was so terrified the truck behind almost rear ended me. *tr

Was driving down the road when expedition started to lurch and not shift properly. took it in to auto shop and they diagnosed that pistons 3 and 7 were misfiring. went to change spark plugs and plugs broke off in the engine. had to order special tool to remove them, second time they have had to be replaced both times they have broken off. cost was over 1500.00 *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. the contact stated while driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle stalled and the entire instrument panel illuminated. this failure occurred six times over a period of six months. the vehicle was taken to a dealer who was unable to duplicate the failure. the manufacturer was not notified of the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 123,000.

Suv entered safe mode ... engine shuddered, low power in low rpm bands.. would not accelerate. had spark plugs replaced in 2014 at 88000 miles. in 2015, 115,000 miles engine does again while driving interstate putting me at risk on road of collision due to power loss. did not enter safe mode second time... just could not get power - had to push hard on gas to get it into lower gear/higher rpms. took to repair shop thinking coils (cop) needed replaced. told engine is no good and needs full replacement. a wreck could occur when engine fails like this. engines should not be dead at 115,000 miles. i maintained according to mfg suggested maintenance schedule. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the fail safe warning indicator illuminated as the engine stalled. the contact stated that the vehicle had to be shifted into the park position in order to be restarted. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

While driving approximately 35 kph my abs light came on followed by the brake light then the airbag light. (check engine never goes off. replace all plugs and coils. replace of sensors and several fuses.) the headlights begin to flash off and on then truck started sputtering. the fuel light went from 3/4 tank to e. i pulled into shopping center placed it in park. went to put it back in drive and couldn't something was draining battery that is only 3 months old. don't know resolution but tired of this truck! it is ridiculous that this truck has so many repeat issues and no recall. ford needs to be sued. i daily have to turn on my hazards and restart car because it spontaneously goes into limp mode, especially in traffic. *tr

Driving at 25mph the vehicle engine shut down and went into failsafe mode, power steering also disabled causing a very dangerous situation trying to steer the car from traffic to a safe area without assisted steering. this problem has occurred several times over the past 2 years and usually in colder weather. last time it happened was on a main highway but luckily i was alone without my family and in the inside lane so i was able to pull over thankfully it didn't happen in the overtaking lane as there is no time to safely change lanes when it shuts down. surprised there has been no fatalities due to this as it is a common problem with 2006 ford trucks. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. while driving at various speeds and after a loud alarm sound, the vehicle stalled and the engine warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the spark plugs were replaced and the mechanic informed the contact that the catalytic converter was failing. the failure had reoccurred on several occasions. the failure mileage was 80,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. the contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the fail safety engine warning light illuminated as the vehicle stalled. the failure was recurring. the vehicle was neither diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 110,000.

Vehicle simply shuts off at any time and shows 'engine fail safe mode'. this has happened approximately 15 times since we bought the vehicle (used) in march 2012 (most recently on 10/13). i have researched this online and many other owners have the same complaint. we replaced the tps at a cost of around $300 as a possible fix and this worked for about 6 months - now the problem is back and my research indicates we need to have the throttle body replaced. this will cost us around $500 - for a total repair cost of around $800 - which we cannot afford! ford has literally $hundreds of millions to take care of this and must recall due to this issue - there is no excuse to allow this dangerous problem to continue. ford motor co. owes me $800 due to their poor engineering and unwillingness to solve this issue - they are greedy crooks. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. the contact stated that while driving 50 mph, the fail safe warning lamp illuminated as the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the spark plugs needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 82,000 and the current mileage was 83,000.
