2006 ford expedition e.b. and engine failsafe mode 1. the events leading up to the failure: there are no detectable events preceding whatever causes the vehicle to go into "engine failsafe" mode. the vehicle runs fine as it always does and then it just happens randomly. 2. the failure, how often it occurs, its consequences: failure occurs at random and is not predictable it just happens. the vehicle operates normally as it should and in a spilt second it is like the vehicle just shuts off, the information center displays "engine in failsafe mode". the engine is actually running in failsafe mode but only at an idle, the power steering and brakes function however the throttle is totally unresponsive in failsafe mode, the vehicle slows to a creep and will stop at the slightest incline. when the vehicle stops the only available option is to turn the key off and restart. the vehicle always restarts and resumes normal operation and driveabilty is fine, just as though nothing ever happened. the occurrence first happened early in january 2010, again in late january, then in september 2010 then again on february 26 then twice today february 28 about 20 minutes apart. the consequences: scary, dangerous, hazardous. feels like an insurance claim and/or a lawsuit waiting to happen. when a vehicle under power just shuts off instantly for no apparent reason it is logical serious injury or worse is a realistic consequence. 3. what was done to correct the failure: so far just a lot of ford guesswork. the internet has a significant number of consumer posts regarding various repairs made. the reported repairs range from sensors, spark plugs, coils, cats, filters, converters and more. the common thread in these consumer reports is the problem still exists and occurs randomly after repair. *tr

I have a 2006 ford expedition and my wife almost lost control and hit a car when the brakes went to the floor. the vehicle has had "spongy brakes" since i bought it and had it to the dealer twice. there is a tsb to replace the front caliper/rotor and pads and ford did this but it still feels spongy and is now leaking fluid. this has been an issue on many expeditions and should have been a recall rather than a tsb. this is an incredibly dangerous situation when the brakes fail. i know i have had instances where i literally need to stand on the brakes to get the vehicle to stop. *tr

Our 2006 ford expedition only had 35,490 miles, and would start up with a rattle. the air was ok, but it stopped working over the weekend and the start up rattle in the morning went away. we took it to ford, as we had 19 days left on the manufacture warranty, and it needed a new compressor assembly and manifold and tube assembly, suction and discharge. now our air is just like new, no start up rattle. i searched the internet and seems many people with this rattle, have been told it's just something that the ford expedition does. we noticed die in the discharge that came from the compressor when it failed, like someone had looked at this before and just patched it. we bought it from carmax jan 2009. i think a recall needs to take place for all 2006 ford expedition owners can get their ac compressor and manifold and tube replaced. *tr

My best friend father and grandmother died inside an suv accident that emerged into a swimming pool. windows were closed. there was no way out of the suv due to power windows. they sat there waiting for death. something has to be done to all vehicles who are built with power windows. the same way that most modern vehicles now have a way of escaping from the trunk of a car why isn't there something where there is a way of escaping from a car window if the car goes into a pool of deep water above 5 feet. these automobile companies need to create an emergency mechanism in all power windows in case of the car going into a lake, river, pool, etc. all windows front and back windows should have a manual roll down knob or whatever it is called for such accidents. i'm pretty sure that if my friends father had some kind of tool to break the windows he would of but who is to say that the rushing waters would have still killed them. they were senior citizens that died so tragically and they are not the only one. i'm not sure if this is the right department for such a complaint, but if this is the wrong department can someone please direct me to the proper channels. this incident is still under investigation but it is not known how they ended up inside a swimming pool. if such mechanism is invented, it should not be an optional it should be mandatory just like seatbelts and airbags and should not be costly to the consumer due to that it is a life saving to humans and animals for that fact. i hope i am understood and that this complaint should be taken seriously as it will save a lot of lives. i also hope that i have made my self clear and understandable. thank you. *tr

The air conditioning system works fine when the vehicle in motion (at higher than idle rpm), but seems to blow distinctly warmer when at idle( e.g. at a stop light). brought in to the dealer twice and was told there is nothing wrong, that the compressor fan is turning slower at idle. if this is true it is an obvious design flaw. we have had previous model years of this model and not had this problem. *jb

Purchased vehicle in january 2006, brand new from the dealer. shortly thereafter, the back window was leaking. had the back window repaired, still leaks. the seal on both the driver and passenger's front windows were missing. took the vehicle back 3 times before this was fixed. after that, the engine began making a loud grinding noise. vehicle has been back in the shop at least 3 times, one time they kept it for a week, claim they can not duplicate. they then decided it was the a/c compressor and we should have the a/c off when starting the vehicle. tried it, does not work. now that the vehicle is out of warranty, it is making the loud grinding noise even more. at one point, we were told by a salesman that we should just call roadside assistance if we break down while on vacation. just what we wanted was to have our vacation ruined by a ford screw up. the dealer won't acknowledge that there is a problem and won't fix it. on top of that the dvd entertainment system that came with the vehicle won't stay closed, the cover over the motor for the third seat has come detached and doesn't fold up right and the air conditioner is warm when sitting still. all problems that a major corporation should not have on a vehicle that has been on the market for several years. would really like all the problems completely fixed or a replacement. driver's side airbag did not deploy when had very hard frontal impact either.

Problem: ford dvd entertainment system and the ford dealer installed satellite radio do not work with the dual play (back seat should be able to watch a movie while front seat gets to listen to satellite radio). we found out through our 2 weeks of (the phone run around) investigation that this problem has been on going for 2 years. we also found out that everything ford has with dual play the dvd/cd factory entertainment doesn't work with satellite radio, navigation system, ipod interface ect. ford has told us that it is our problem because in their owners manual it doesn't say they work together??? why then is it an option??? ford doesn't want to help us, they don't want to purchase back the dvd player. why is it big companies can take advantage of us blue collar hard working folks? what does an average person do, i purchased a $50,000 vehicle that is an investment and ford ignores us. do you know where i can get helped? thank you very much trena anderson gillette, wyoming. *nm

Loud grinding noise on initial start up on 2006 ford expedition, ford motor claims it is from a/c compressor, yet, cannot give me a written guarantee that the vehicle will not catch on fire, blow up or stall. vehicle sitting on dealer lot because i am afraid to drive it. *jb
