Recently reported ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING problems on 2006 Ford Expedition

On 2 separate occasions (both around 40,000 miles), the car just shut itself off, without warning, while driving down the road at about 40 mph. power steering and power braking both failed. i was just able to coast across several busy lanes of traffic to get to the side of the road. this could be extremely dangerous, particularly if i was on a freeway or interstate. the dealer's diagnosis was that the throttle had gotten stuck wide open, and that the car had to go into failsafe mode to prevent it from accelerating out of control. what if the failsafe mode fails? i've read numerous other complaints of the same thing happening on other 2006 ford expeditions. there is clearly a defective part here, and it is clearly a safety issue. *tr

Driving vehicle and car shut off. a wrench symbol appeared. after 2 attempts, i was able to get the vehicle restarted. took car to garage for service and was informed that the computer code which came back was the "cruise control circuitry" and i would need to take the vehicle to a ford dealership for service due to the nature of the repair. *tr

I have a 2006 ford expedition with 50,000 miles on it. my wife drives this car with our children. about 7 or 8 times now the check engine or (wrench light) comes on going down the road and shuts the car off completely. i have looked online and have seen that thousands of people are having the same thing happen to them. from what i read it has something to do with the electronic throttle control. i know you probably get complaints all the time but this is very serious. every post on the web says that ford has no recall and that the dealerships are doing nothing to fix this problem but putting a new part on and charging for it. this is absolutely ridiculous. there is obviously a problem. please help me and others to fix this problem before someone gets hurt. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. while driving in a parking lot at about 15mph, the vehicle just shut off. a light on the instrument panel indicated that the vehicle was in " engine fail safe mode". the contact put her hazard lights on, put the vehicle in park and turned the engine off. she restarted the vehicle and it operated normally. the contact stated that this has happened about 6-7 times. she reported the failure to the manufacturer and they stated that they never heard of anything like this. the driver does not feel her vehicle is safe. the failure mileage was 40,000 and the current mileage is 52,691.

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. the contact stated while driving 65 mph the vehicle stalled without any warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to duplicate the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 142,000.

Engine failure of 2006 ford expedition. dealership explained the engine had a bent injector rod . advised new engine was necessary. cost estimate $4000-$7000. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. while driving 20 mph, the vehicle stalled. the engine warning light illuminated on the instrument panel and read, "engine fail safe mode." after several attempts, the contact was able to restart the vehicle. the dealer replaced the throttle body assembly. after the repair, the contact began smelling a burning oil odor in the vehicle. the smell became stronger and then turned into a gaseous odor, which was also entering through the interior vents. the contact inspected the vehicle, but could not locate any gas leak. the odor became so overpowering that one of the occupants had a nose bleed and several other occupants suffered headaches and stomach aches. the dealer stated that the oil level was too high and caused the fuel odor. the odor is still present. the current and failure mileages were less than 66,000.

Was driving on freeway at about 60 vehicle went into engine failure mode vehicle cut off completed i had to hurry put the truck in park turn on my hazards and keep restarting the truck until i got it restarted when it restarted the air didn't work any more i have no cold air but the heat works and the truck only has 27000 miles on it as of today ford would not fix it i have full bumper to bumper warranty at the time and still have extended warranty up to 75000 miles the vehicles shuts off like once a month and it just did it this morning i don't know how to solve this problem ford did not honor my contract i could have been killed on a freeway in traffic here a beep and car go into failure mode someone could have ran into the back of me by not knowing what was going on any thing what if i was going up a hill and my engine goes into failure mode i need help solving this problem. *tr

2006 ford expedition, has stopped several times while in route somewhere. just stops at once and safe mode failure light comes on. power steering fails, as well as engine stopping. have had rebuilt transmission, replace the throttle, and several other things including i believe air pump. none of this cheap. but biggest concern is the safety of the vehicle. have been very blessed that no one has been behind me when this has happened or on the highway. this is very scary and ford needs to recall and figure out what is causing this to occur. *tr

My 2006 expedition had a spark plug blowout. i understand this is a frequent problem and is a design defect versus a maintenance issue. i did buy the extended warranty and have been told it is not covered. *tr

Engine shuts off while driving down the street. engine fail-safe light is displayed. was barely able to steer the vehicle to a safe area. restarted engine, everything came back up again. *tr

My truck went into fail safe mode while on the highway. this caused the truck to stop suddenly with no use of gas pedal but the engine was still running. this almost caused an accident. i was able to drift over and shut the engine off and restart it and it ran fine the rest of the day. now i am afraid to drive it. *tr

1/8/09 while driving at 65 mph on highway vehicle's "engine fail safe mode" alarm sounded & message flashed on panel. vehicle immediately lost power. i was able to coast to shoulder of road. turned off vehicle, restarted and was able to drive approximately 1 1/2 miles. i was in turn lane, started to turn left, alarm sounded, message flashed and all power was gone. i quickly turned vehicle off and back on to try and get out of path of oncoming tractor trailer. i was able to get just off roadway after 15 mins started vehicle, drove 4 miles failed again. it was towed to mechanic. after calls to ford and further testing the electronic throttle body assembly was replaced. on 1/30/10, 35 miles from home, driving on highway at 55 mph when "engine fail safe mode" alarm sounded & message flashed on panel. again i was able to safely pull to shoulder of road to avoid accident. i called ford dealer located in that town, had vehicle again towed to shop and they replaced an additional part. i called ford after 2nd event, i was told by ford that they are aware of the problem, however since they don't have a solution to it they do not have a recall on this. on 4/20/11 while driving home from work on highway at 60 mph the "engine fail safe mode" alarm & message flashing on panel. i was in far right lane so again was able to coast to shoulder before steering locked from no power. if i had been in left lane i would not have been able to get off roadway. (on 4/19/11 i had vehicle inspected, in nys, no codes were on this vehicle). towed to shop, after running tests and calls to ford they have again replaced the electronic throttle body assembly as it had failed. still no recall. this is extreme safety issue. i have avoided accidents 3 times, if i had been in left lanes i would not have been so lucky. this happens with no advance warning. ford knows there is a problem.

My truck went into fail safe mode while on the highway. this causes the truck to stop suddenly with no power to accelerate but the engine still runs. this caused me to almost be crushed by a tractor trailer behind me. i had several children in the car too!! *tr

Driving on highway and suv just shuts down, without warning. this is the 2nd time this has happened. *tr

August 21 on the way to work (4 mile drive) the truck started to shake and lost power, check engine light came on, we took the truck to the dealer, and they can not figure what is going on,so they said the engine needs to be replaced. the codes are p0022-p0305-p0307-p1184-p2198-p2273 my family just came back from a 3000 trip ,i can only imagine having this happening to us during this time. i been looking for the same type of trouble to this trucks and found that there is a number of similar complaints about having to replace engines ranging from 38,000 miles to about 60,000miles. the price of this cars are well over $35,000 to having to spend another $7,000 with all the problems of our economy right now a normal person like me can not afford another rip off by one of the big companies, like ford. all i'm asking is that they take responsibility for this engine troubles and repair like they supposed to. *tr

My 2006 ford expedition suddenly shuts down for the third time now while driving on the road. the engine shuts down suddenly and gives out the engine fail safe mode message on the board. dealer says nothing showing up on the diagnostics. how could that be. there's got to be a reason why that suv suddenly shut its engine down. accident will happen if this will not be resolved. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. while driving between 25-55 mph, the vehicle began to vibrate and shake violently, the engine light illuminated, and smoke appeared from the tail pipe. the vehicle could not be driven greater than 60 mph. the higher the speed, the more the vehicle would shake and vibrate. the failure occurred everytime the vehicle was driven. the dealer has had the vehicle since june 24, 2008, but they still cannot determine the cause of the failure. the current and failure mileages were unavailable. updated 09/29/08.*lj the dealer replaced the converter. updated 09/29/08. *jb

2006 ford expedition that cuts out while driving, started at approx 18k and has been to same ford dealer 5 times. problem has not recurred since last visit to dealer but could come back and is serious safety factor as a total loss of power without warning. last repair noted a adjustment or repair to throttlebody. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford expedition. the contact stated the vehicle stalls without warning. the vehicle will then start without any problems. this failure has occurred randomly over the four years the contact has owned the vehicle. the vehicle was inspected by the dealer a week ago and nothing was found to be wrong with the vehicle. the vin was rejected from the system. the failure mileage was 25000 and the current mileage 74000.

I purchased a 2006 ford expedition in april of '06, beginning in november of '06 my engine began stalling. the consequences included loss of braking power, freezing of steering, vehicle slowing with no control. i brought this to my dealers attention on numerous occasions as the problem has continued throughout 2007. i am very concerned of the potential for accidents and injuries. *tr

2006 ford expedition has safety issues with engine. consumer states that the engine gags or shakes upon ignition. consumer is mostly worried about the wobbling when making turns. claims there is loss of power. *kb the rear latch would stick at times to the point where the door would not close. *jb

1. frequent horrible grinding noise on cold start-up. 2. loud clunking noise and feel vehicle shudder in reverse under light acceleration. *jb

Purchased vehicle in january 2006, brand new from the dealer. shortly thereafter, the back window was leaking. had the back window repaired, still leaks. the seal on both the driver and passenger's front windows were missing. took the vehicle back 3 times before this was fixed. after that, the engine began making a loud grinding noise. vehicle has been back in the shop at least 3 times, one time they kept it for a week, claim they can not duplicate. they then decided it was the a/c compressor and we should have the a/c off when starting the vehicle. tried it, does not work. now that the vehicle is out of warranty, it is making the loud grinding noise even more. at one point, we were told by a salesman that we should just call roadside assistance if we break down while on vacation. just what we wanted was to have our vacation ruined by a ford screw up. the dealer won't acknowledge that there is a problem and won't fix it. on top of that the dvd entertainment system that came with the vehicle won't stay closed, the cover over the motor for the third seat has come detached and doesn't fold up right and the air conditioner is warm when sitting still. all problems that a major corporation should not have on a vehicle that has been on the market for several years. would really like all the problems completely fixed or a replacement. driver's side airbag did not deploy when had very hard frontal impact either.

Loud grinding noise on initial start up on 2006 ford expedition, ford motor claims it is from a/c compressor, yet, cannot give me a written guarantee that the vehicle will not catch on fire, blow up or stall. vehicle sitting on dealer lot because i am afraid to drive it. *jb
