Problems with 2014 Ford Escape ENGINE

On average, the 2014 Ford Escape starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 66 433 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2014 Ford Escape

Car stalls after starting and driving a short distance. will restart and perform ok. usually happens after car has been driven then parked for a short amount of time (like running into a store) then stalls after driven short distance.

A lack of coolant circulation caused the engine to overheat, resulting in a cracked cylinder head. vehicle was in motion in a city. vehicle is in the shop and i just bought it 1 year ago. i still owe and do not have the money to repair. i have 2 small children and our life is in turmoil because of this.

Driving down road. car said engine failure pulled over poped the hood and engine caught on fire and car burned total loss

The vehicle was being driven and had only been started and moving for less than 5 minutes. noticed that windshield wipers would not shut off or change speeds, then noticed a slight odor in car that increasingly strengthened. phoned my husband while at a stop light, odor of something burning became much stronger, then noticed smoke coming between the the drivers side hood seam and between the hood and the windshield, this was immediately followed by noticable flame. i put the vehicle in park, turned on hazard lights and exited the vehicle. local police and fire department responded, began with small fire extinguishers, without success and fire department opened hood and applied water to extinguish. this was on a city street in o'fallon, mo. uncertain of cause, but am now aware that ford issued a recall on this model (recall 17s09) and believe this could be a possibility.

Vehicle engine started to reach high temperature levels while driving and a notification to stop the vehicle due to high temperatures. can only drive for 10-15 mins before this happens. a professional mechanic performed a diagnostic test and a recall came back for 2014 ford escape - coolant level sensor system installation.in the affected vehicles, a lack of coolant circulation could cause an engine to overheat, resulting in a crack in the cylinder head. a cracked cylinder head can result in a pressurized oil leak. oil that comes into contact with a hot engine surface increases the risk of a fire in the engine compartment.

The auto continues to stall in low idle

My car had a check engine light come on when i turned it on one day. it was on the weekend so i had to wait until monday to get diagnostics at my local dealer. the car started to run really rough and was slipping. i took it to my local ford dealer and they told me that my head gasket was blown and leaking antifreeze everywhere. i am currently awaiting to see if the head is cracked to which i'm told is common with this issue and this car. there was a recall for this in the same year my car was made, however, my car was not included into this recall in is now my responsibility financially to fix this.

My battery died. it was jumped and working, but the car was not drivable because the 'hot engine' message was on. it was towed to firestone. they put a new battery in, but the 'hot engine ' light was still on. i found a recall about the coolant system on the internet. 17s09. the car was towed to huntersville ford dealership. they have had it for 24 hours and have not called or returned my calls.

The engine suddenly down dies while driving several times in the past few months.

Coolant disappearing

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford escape. while driving and pulling into a parking spot, the vehicle shut off and was towed to the contact's home. the following day, the contact attempted to drive the vehicle, but it shut off again. the vehicle was taken to crossroads ford of prince george (4500 whitehill blvd, prince george, va 23875, (877) 331-9405). the contact was advised to use rolling stops to avoid the vehicle shutting off. the vehicle shut off in the dealer's parking lot. the dealer replaced the oxygen sensors after performing a small test drive. it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle remained at the dealer for almost two weeks. the total cost for the repairs was over $4,200. the vehicle was currently at the dealer awaiting repairs. the failure mileage was 79,000. the vin was invalid.

Driving our escape, with 58,800 miles, on a road trip had check engine light come on. we drove it to a close repair shop and found out coolant leaked into head gasket #3 causing over heating damage and replacement of cylinder head would be required. ford dealer would not help repair or replace or even diagnose. recall fix 17s09 (nhtsa 17v-209) did not fix the potential danger or damage. the coolant leak still happened causing engine failure and a worthless car at 58,800 miles.

Engine coolant level continues to drop in reservoir. vehicle was purchased new and maintained per ford. coolant has been added twice at dealership although coolant system is reputedly sealed. this vehicle was not under ford's earlier recall. car is used in normal driving conditions (highway, around town).

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford escape. while the contact's husband was driving 40 mph, the "engine failure" warning message illuminated on the instrument panel. the driver smelled and observed smoke emitting from the hood. a fire occurred under the hood and the driver was able to locate a fire extinguisher and put out the flames himself. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was not able to be driven. the vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 17v209000 (engine and engine cooling). the vehicle was towed to sonju all american superstore (located at 893 scenic dr, two harbors, mn 55616, (218) 834-2101) where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 73,589.

Current issue is head gasket overheated and blew. coolant is internally leaking into the engine. car blows out a ton of exhaust while driving and has the smell of coolant in it. i can't even drive on the highway anymore because the car overheats and limits my speed to 45 mph. sometimes i have to pull over just to let it cool down. every time the car starts up it vibrates so much that its quite annoying. sometimes the car shuts off right after i start it in the morning, right after a crazy burst of vibration. a little over a month ago i started my car and it vibrated so much and then so much oil leaked from my car, exhaust blew out dark black smog and smoke was coming from my hood. car is really loud on idle, never been in a car so loud with so much vibration all throughout the car. car constantly overheats and has no power when driving. car vibrates insanely when i'm idle at a red light. check engine light goes on and off every other day. my mechanic has done research on the car and says to get rid of it, it's not even worth fixing; he says you'll end up spending just as much money fixing this in the long run than just buying a new car. my mechanic said fixing the head gasket wont solve your problem, you need an entire new engine and cylinder block. we've been doing a lot of research on this car/model and everyone's having the same issues and can't really get down to the bottom line on what's wrong with the vehicle. i'm curious if everyone has the same problem with this car/model that there's no major recall on it. instead people are driving around with a loud car that constantly vibrates, leaks coolant into the engine and having to constantly take it to the shop.

Car stalls at idle especially after parking the vehicle, and restarting it after a few minutes. check engine light comes on. i put the car in park and restart and it stalls again. after a few attempts the car starts and drives normally. this happens mostly when in motion at slow speeds on the city street.

2 months ago, my car died in as i was exiting the interstate. transmission issues - repaired after 2 months. drove it out of town and second day being out of town engine light on. brought it back to mechanic and transmission mechanic said there was no trans code present, but following codes present p1116 and p0234. unable to drive car again until light engine light is off and this repair is out of pocket again.

My vehicle started to overheat and smoke up. a mechanic looked at the vehicle and thought it was the vacuum pump or something close to that name. i can fill up my coolant to the max line and drive and be empty within minutes. then i noticed a recall for ford escapes concerning a coolant problem and i am worried. this vehicle is brand new to me (only 2 years) and still under 6 years old. i am afraid that my vehicle will combust with my kids in it. we cant find where the coolant is coming from and its a real scare.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford escape. while driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle unexpectedly decelerated. the contact observed smoke coming from the vehicle and pulled off the road. the vehicle was towed to team ford lincoln, inc. (1813 4th ave s, denison, ia 51442) where it was diagnosed that the cylinder head had a crack. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 17v209000 (engine). the failure mileage was 104,000.

While driving the vehicle and traveling on a busy highway the vehicle would not shift into gear to move with traffic. vehicle lost power. a few days later on another busy highway driving approximately 60 miles an hour, the computer read transmission failed. my mileage was 59,647 which was under the 60,000 warranty but out of date. i purchased the car with 49,443 miles on 8/1/18. i immediately brought the car to sunny side motors a authorized ford dealership and had the transmission failed message diagnosis done at the cost of $159.95 to find out the repair would cost me $2712.19 which would not be cover under the 60,000 mile warranty. the test retrieve code p1744 for torque converter clutch performed, pressure dropping out of spec when warm checked fluid condition and found torque converter clutch damaged causing internal contamination and needs internal repairs. being a single women at 72 years of age, and being a survivor of a near fatal accident in january of 2018, which took me 8 months to get back behind a wheel of a car i once again find myself feeling unsafe driving a car that just randomly loses power. after reading many complaints with the same existing problems as i am experiencing i am very concerned why this problem has not been a factory recall. very unsafe when driving and you lose power. hopefully a recall will be issued based on the many complaints that have been placed. the 1st dealership i visited in westborough ma had a wait time of 3 weeks to diagnose the problem.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford escape. while driving 50 mph, the contact noticed a message on the instrument panel, indicating "reducing power due to overheating" and another unknown message appeared. the contact stated that the temperature gauge did not show that the vehicle was overheating. the contact was able to park on the side of the road and noticed smoke under the hood. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and the contact was informed that the vehicle did not have any oil due to a leak. the contact associated the failure with nhtsa campaign number: 17v209000 (engine and engine cooling). the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. a dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 123,148.

While car is in motion our 2014 ford escape stalls. we turn the key off, turn it back in and it will sometimes run for a bit before stalling again and sometimes stall immediately. currently this has happened on city streets and parking lots. once while turning. others going straight. luckily we have not had this happen on the interstate yet.

Transmission would not go into gear car would not go forwards.

I have already filed a complaint regarding the coolant light sensor that kept coming on when there was coolant in the car. less than one week after paying to have the sensor replaced, my engine light came on for a cylinder 2 misfire. so now i am being told this is a cracked head gasket. i have owned this car for one month and it has less than 100,000 miles. this is the exact problem listed in the ford recall 17s09 and this vehicle was made at the plant associated with the recall during the timeframe. the expense of this repair needs to be paid for by ford. it is expensive and now my car is not safe to drive.

I'll be driving, the it will stop and throw up the oil light, battery light and the airbag light. i took it to the ford dealership on 122nd st in portland, they said they couldn't find anything wrong because it wasn't throwing any codes. now i'm sitting on the side of the road and the error code says engine fault service now. i've had regular maintenance on the car so not sure why this is happening. cars/suvs shouldn't just stop working while you're driving them.

After starting ignition and car idols/driven heavy gas/emissions smell fills cabin when using heat/a/c or defrost systems. engine light sometimes goes on. car has 35,100 mi. took car to queens ny ford service center 4 hours later $400 later, changed cabin filter and sprayed fragrance on it. told must use cabin recycle air function. ford owners manual doesnt say must use and in no other car have had to must use this function. i have a case# cas24667125 and appt for 11/6/19. ford built this car tech's should know how to fix this!

The vehicle was stationary and had not been driven for more than 3 hours. i pushed the remote start and the car started, but it shut off almost immediately. the shut down was due to overheating. the engine was cool and the coolant was tepid at best. this is not an overheating issue. the car will not run on more than 2 cylinders. this is the second time this has happened since the recall for the coolant sensor. the car had to be towed to the dealer where i was charged to diagnose the issue. this should be no charge since it was recalled for the overheating issue. this overheating has caused my transmission and torque converter to fail as well. the cost of the transmission should be reimbursed by ford since they have know about the overheating issue for a long time now.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford escape. while the contact's wife was driving approximately 35 mph, an abnormal noise was heard from the front end of the vehicle. also, the check engine warning indicator illuminated continuously while the vehicle was hot. the contact mentioned that the indicator did not illuminate while the vehicle was cool. there were also other multiple unknown indicators that illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the coolant valve needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. sayville ford (5686 sunrise hwy, sayville, ny 11782, (855) 561-1191) was contacted and stated that there were no recalls for the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 48,620.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford escape. while driving approximately 35 mph, the low coolant warning indicator illuminated continuously. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that there was coolant in the vehicle. the contact was able to drive the vehicle; however, the failure persisted. the vehicle displayed an overheating message, which caused the vehicle to stall. the vehicle was unable to restart. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that there was air in the coolant line. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure persisted a week later. the vehicle was taken back to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the coolant was low in the vehicle and was burning eternally; however, there was no leak. the contact was informed to take the vehicle to a ford dealer. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was taken to another independent mechanic who stated that the failure was due to a recall. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 17v209000 (engine and engine cooling). the dealer was not contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 94,000.

I purchased 2014 ford escape se with branded title from car auction. after receiving car from tow truck, i started car on my drive, few minutes later visible smoke start coming from the engine, and i also noticed overheat from engine. i stop the engine. next day i started car, and experienced same problem. i contacted two rivers ford - mt juliet, tn. ford service department asked me to bring car in their service. they checked car, and communicated ford motor and ford legal service whether to full fill recall procedures for branded title car. after 20 days, they called me. their decision is not to fulfill recall. they said ford warranties not cover branded title cars. car is not safe to drive. and my car problem seems primary related to recall issue. engine obviously experienced overheat before since plastics over the engine was melted.

My car coolant is always leaking have to fill out and fix most of the time. the transmission was suddenly failed even only 80000k mileage and service center for replacement cost is $6000.that's really ridiculous.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford escape. the contact stated while driving 50 mph, when he noticed the temperature gauge increase. the contact stated no warning lights were illuminated. the contact stated he heard an abnormal noise from the engine and saw smoke exiting from the hood. the contact pulled the vehicle on the side of the road and let the engine cool for 15 minutes before continuing driving, but after 20 minutes the failure occurred again. the vehicle was taken to local dealer bozeman ford lincoln located at 2900 n 19th ave, bozeman, mt 59718, (406) 587-1221, where he was made aware of the failure. the contact stated the dealer set up an appointment for nhtsa campaign number: 17v209000 (engine and engine cooling) repairs with in a week. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired as of yet. the manufacturer had not been informed of failure. the failure mileage was 112,000.

On 1/17/18 mileage 47120 i brought the vehicle to our local ford dealer and they repaired the vehicle under warranty due to recall 17s09. however, on 8/5/2019 mileage 62,500 the vehicle was running rough and the check engine light came on. long story short, the vehicle was towed to another ford dealer where they determined the vehicle had a cracked cylinder, the exact same condition that 17s09 was supposed to fix. while i did not suffer a safety incident in this case, my concern is that the vehicle was not repaired correctly under the original recall, and thus there may still be a safety issue that may affect others.

My car was overheating so i took it into the shop and they said it was the thermostat so i replaced the thermostat and it's still kept overheating so i took it back in they ran a test in the heads were blown so they had to replace the heads well from what i understand that this is a common problem with my year of vehicle and the ford escapes because there was another ford escape with the same issue and they had to replace the heads on it i feel like it should be recalled because it is a common problem and i think ford is aware of it i don't have the money to replace a head on my vehicle it's a 2014 it shouldn't even need the heads replaced it look like it belongs to

Vehicle needs "new engine" as diagnosed by tapper ford dealership, paw paw mi. was told the "block" was bad after "coolant leaked into engine" from head gasket cracked. this vehicle has a recall stating "localized overheating of the engine cylinder head may cause the cylinder head to crack". this vehicle was at stand still in traffic jam on highway7/25/19 warning sounds and message appeared on dashboard of vehicle stating to pull over due to engine overheating. vehicle was driven 1 more mile to highway exit, pulled into gas station at exit, hood opened to show no coolant present in tank. vehicle allowed to cool for 30min, placed appropriate amount of orange coolant in tank as instructed to by manual and drove care another hour without issue. next morning coolant tank checked and noted no coolant present, again placed appropriate amount in tank as manual states, drove vehicle another hour. coolant level checked for next few days and had no issue. coolant level check prior to driving vehicle home from northern michigan, again none present in tank, again added appropriate amount of coolant, drove home approx. 350miles without issue. next morning (sunday, august 4th, 2019) started suv, entire vehicle was shaking, large amount of white thick exhaust present, sweet smelling. vehicle brought to local mechanic, stated head gasket needed replaced and stated a recall was out for an issue with a sensor that could malfunction and cause this damage. vehicle was towed to tapper ford dealership in paw, paw mi for further evaluation. this dealership told us that an entire new engine was needed and would not be covered by ford. the problems with the engine of this vehicle is due to the recall stated above. how can ford refuse to fix this problem at a cost to them? was given a phone quote of "$8,000.00" for the new engine. i do have a video of the white thick exhaust.

The car was stationary. recall issue with the coolant reservoir. broke twice and covered but third time no warning. engine now is cracked due to the lack of coolant. i have a coolant intrusion in the motor and it needs to be replaced. ford won't cover it because the recall warranty has expired per the dealer and their customer service number.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford escape. after starting the vehicle, the contact noticed that the engine was idling roughly, the check engine indicator illuminated, and white smoke was coming from the exhaust. the vehicle was taken to key ford (422 us-1, york, maine) where it was diagnosed that the head gasket was faulty and damaged the engine. the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact indicated that the vehicle was previously serviced per nhtsa campaign number: 17v209000 (engine and engine cooling). the manufacturer was notified, but no assistance was offered. the failure mileage was 118,000.

Upon beginning. to move forward (pulling into traffic) the engine will sometimes stall(cut off) . other times it will begin to run very rough sometimes causing ithe engine to stall. although this vehicle does not seem to be part of recall # 14s30 or #14s20 the conditions are very similar to these reports.

My ford gave off exhaust smell from time to time and occasionally the engine light may come on. but dealership did not find any problems recently, the engine light came on and i drove my card to the nearest fords dealership but, needed to schedule an appointment. advised could drive home if no unusual sounds. engine light went off before appointment, so i canceled. 2-3 weeks later engine light, came back on with smell of fumes. i scheduled an appointment. the day of the appointment, i started the car and coolant light also came on at start with the smell of fumes. feeling uneasy driving the car, i had 2014 ford escape towed to the dealership that i frequent and describe engine light and coolant light came on during start, with a loud humming noise. since i had already scheduled to get the works synthetic oil change and vehicle maintenance on the same day, i also requested diagnostic testing. the car was kept overnight. there is only 47746 miles on the vehicle and too many issues. i was advised the car had misfired codes and overheat codes. pressured tested coolant pulled the spark plug, found coolant in a cylinder. the car needs a head gasket. car smoked during cold start and exhaust smells like coolant. my car was previously recalled for a door hatch and overheating.. i have taken the car to the dealership several times before for engine light, but, vehicle check-up always seems to resolve the issue. on one occasion, requested oil change and vehicle inspection, when almost a quarter of a mile from home all of the dashboard lights came on. had the car towed back to the dealership, the issue seemed to be resolved.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford escape. the contact stated that the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to elder ford of tampa (9560 n florida ave, tampa, fl 33612), but they did not have any appointments available for two weeks. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that a new spark plug and coil were needed. the vehicle was repaired. two weeks later, the check engine warning indicator illuminated again. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the head gasket failed and needed replacement. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the approximate failure mileage was 47,726.

When idling the vehicle shakes really bad. going down the road everything is fine. as soon as you stop it starts shaking again. it doesn't matter if the ac is on or off. occasionally there is hesitation when giving it gas and trying to move. sometimes it won't go from reverse to drive smoothly.

Transmission fault service now light has came on. the car no longer shifts gears while driving. previously, the car would shift very hard, rocking the vehicle while driving, stalling, then going back to acceleration.

While driving to work the car lost power suddenly. the car then suddenly accelerated on its own and lost power. the car became immobile after just a few minutes of the initial problem the car was stuck on the road until help could arrive to love it off the road where it came to a stop. the car was on a county road, in motion, with no pre indication of issue. the cars transmission is believed bad from this event and the car can not be driven or moved under its own power.

Vehicle will stop running while in motion without warning. also gives off heavy exhaust smell. there is only 100k miles on it. it is due to a coolant leak into the cylinder 3 causing a gasket to blow (see attachment for invoice and details). we were told by the car shop that this has happened to at least 5 other ford escape owners (we aren't in a heavily populated area, so this is significant). car is not safe to drive due to high risk of becoming stranded, which is not safe due to traffic, children on board, hot weather, and so on.

Vehicle is overheating. coolant level stays low even after refilling. no visible leaks.

The car began to overheat one morning while it was being driven on a city street about 45-50 mph. the car had been parked overnight for 8-10 hours before being driven. there were no visible signs of leaking coolant where the car had been parked. when coolant was added after the car had cooled off it poured out the bottom of the car. it was taken to a mechanic and there was a leak/hole in the coolant tank.

Coolant issues similar to those included in the part 573 safety recall 17v-209, though my vehicle was manufactured a few weeks later and not included in that recall, as well as electrical issues that were similar to other recalls that didn't include my vin. in june 2019, it started with the vehicle not turning on or shifting out of park intermittently.. work was performed and then a week later p0303 cylinder misfire.. again work was completed, the code came back, and now ford is recommending replacing the engine but will not cover the costs due to being 5 years and in excess of 60k miles. took for 2nd opinion and ran out of coolant and overheated less than 5 miles away from ford dealership, even though they just replaced the coolant overflow tank and filled it.. continues need coolant every few miles. seems crazy that a vehicle that stayed on top of routine maintenance and has not been involved in an accident or excessive conditions would need a new engine at less than 94k miles and is the consumer's responsibility to foot the bill. i've already spent almost $3k on this issue and ford verbally told me just the engine would be around $7-8k without labor. they also had their sales department call me and offer to "take a couple hundred off a new vehicle" for my current one. very disheartening to hear that when i've taken care of the vehicle as the sole owner, less a few recommended tire rotations.

This vehicle should have been included in a 2017 safety recall related to overheating and coolant leaks, but it was not. in february 2019, it overheated with little warning on the freeway, blowing a hole in the motor (at 62k miles). ford rejected request for assistance, so repair was done by independent mechanic (motor replaced). three months later, during freeway drive, message appeared several times stating power was being cut to keep engine from overheating (no indication engine actually was overheating). ultimately, message appeared warning to pull off the road immediately. overheated engine completely melted a bracket. mechanic identified a burnt-out sensor but could not say why it happened. i secured two dealership diagnostics. first conducted comprehensive diagnostic and concluded a waste gate was stuck open; no mention of damaged sensor. second said the degas bottle was cracked and declined to perform pressure test; no mention of damaged sensor or waste gate issue. i cannot afford all these random repairs and in any case, do not feel this car can be put into a safe condition for driving.

On may 13, 2019 took my car to world ford to fix door recall, as i was there was told i needed brake and transmission fluid replaced. after i got my car back i was sitting idle and my temp gauge when to high turn off engine safely. i checked the coolant level it was low added water. i didn't have to do this every day. on may 31st, check engine light came on, my husband checked the dip stick which had no oil on it. i had the car towed to world ford, who stated i needed a new engine because i had metal shavings in my engine and oil all over my car from an oil leak. they told me it was the people who change my oil last, i spoke with that company and have had both the owners go to world ford, who has yet to return either of their phone calls. i have pictures of oil underneath my car, which in turn has all stemmed from my coolant being low and overheating my engine that has caused an oil leak. i called ford and was told they have no resources to fix my car and i can pay for it and if they do come up with a program i might be able to be reimbursed. world ford called me on june 14th and said they fixed the coolant recall, but no one is fixing my engine so i can come get the car. this is absolutely ridiculous that because of their faulty engineering i have been without a car for 3 weeks.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford escape. while driving 65 mph, the transmission fault service now warning message appeared on the instrument panel. the vehicle was taken to lundgren ford (located at 900 old hwy 53, eveleth, mn 55734, (800) 954-0323) where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 91,000. the vin was unknown.
