Having steering issues. vehicle shakes when driving and makes a sound like some thg thing is rubbing. have been told by two mechanics that it is an issue with the power steering rack. have contacted several ford dealers and have been told it has been a common problem in the past but ford will not cover it. wife is scared to drive it.

Power steering assist warning came on and lost steering. it happens when driving.
Tried to back out of my driveway but was unable to turn steering wheel and then notice the message. trying to pull car back into driveway it was extremely difficult as well. i just grateful i was able to get to and from church with no problem. i don't want to imagine what could have happened had this occurred while driving. drivers are so much in a rush.
Power steering system fault light came on and made it really hard to steer while driving. i'm glad i was stopped when it came on otherwise i would have had a wreck, i'm sure of it! also when i looked online i noticed there were a ton of other people with the same year and model complaining of the issue. please fix this issue!
My car is approaching the 60 mo. deadline warranty date. the steering is electronic so i cannot service belt or fluid. the steering "locks up" periodically so i have no power assist and lose control of the car. with winter driving conditions, i will be very likely to have an accident injuring me or someone else. this happens in stationary and moving making it nearly impossible to steer or park the car. the dealer tells me there is no factory help and a new steering gear and rack will cost about $2000.00 !!!
Power steering went out and was completely unable to steer without extreme effort very dangerous when turning into traffic
On saturday october 5, 2019 at 11pm our 17 year old daughter was stranded with a power steering module failed error. we took it to the closest mechanic which was on the corner of the road she was stranded at. the car could be driven but she could have never steered it. it took everything for my husband to be able to get it there. the car only had 106,690 miles on it and should have been covered under warranty but we didnt have time to take it the dealership and they aren't willing to reimburse us. the 2009-2013 had a recall for this same issue but the 2014 isn't covered under the recall. it seems like it still should be a recall issue.
Left driveway and a minute down the road (on a city street) as the vehicle began to accelerate the gears jolted and steering seized up making me unable to avoid a car parked around a bend that was a foot in the road. no lights came on and no warning appeared. i had an appointment to take it to the shop in a few days because when switching gears or accelerating after vehicle is stopped it jolts/feels like it's trying harder than it should have to for being such a new vehicle, and haven't even owned the vehicle for a month. it's very upsetting to just get a new to me car and have an unavoidable accident. it's currently at the service shop. luckily no one was injured but both vehicles are badly damaged. this isn't the first complaint about this issue with this vehicle and there's multiple complaints just this year. i have a feeling as time goes on and vehicles hit between 50-80 thousand miles the issue will become more apparent. ford should definitely have a recall and fix this problem so no one becomes seriously injured.
When approaching a light power assist failure error appeared i quickly realized that steering was extremely difficult. luckily i was close and able to get to work. i turned the car off and back on and the power steering returned. 2 weeks later it happened again while turning into a parking lot. luckily happened at slow speed. i made an appointment to take it in to my ford dealer. on the way to the appointment the steering went out twice. i received a call from the service department a few hours after dropping the car off informing me that the error appeared when they pulled it in and that the rack and pinion needed replaced. had to get a loan to pay for the $2,000 repair. reading complaints it seems like there should be a recall. the vehicle only has 40,740 miles. no issues since repair on 9/19/2019
On august 23rd, 2019, i was driving back from a 240 mile round trip and was caught in a severe thunderstorm. as i was pulling inot a parking lot to wait out the storm, my power steering failed. after 10 minutes it came back and i was able to make it home. i took it to a service station the next morning and no error codes showed up. on august 30th after making the same round trip, i again lost my power steering near my home. it failed to come back. i had the car towed to a local shop. they determined it was a failure identical to the active recall in the model year prior to mine and it needed to be towed to the dealership. the dealership confirmed an internal fault in the power steering rack which will need to be replaced. thankfully the steering failures happened when i was either in the process of parking or already parked.
I got in my car to go to work after it had been parked all night. i turned it on and i instantly got the message "steering assist fault service required" i couldn't turn the wheel. i shut it off and turned it back on and the message was gone. i was able to drive to work however i am scared something is going to go out while im driving!
This has been happening for a few years now-normally i can turn vehicle off and then on again and the electric power steering assist fault error will go away. now this error doesn't go away and there is no power steering. when this first started to happen it was taken to the ford dealer and they said it was not an issue, if i go online i see numerous people with this same issue with little results from ford. i am so disappointed in ford for not taking responsibility. not sure what i will do the garage is going to try to reset the electrical system, they said 50/50 chance it will work.
I was running errands, when i started my car i got a message "steering assist fault service required". i could still drive the car but it took a lot of effort to turn the steering wheel. the message appears when the key is turned on before starting the car, i did drive it home, my wife wouldn't have the strength to drive it. i haven't tried to get it repaired yet, that will have to wait until i get back from a trip.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford escape. the contact stated that the steering wheel was extremely difficult to turn in either direction and required excessive force. b & b ford (10476 dunbarton blvd, barnwell, sc 29812, (803) 259-5524) was notified of the failure and diagnosed that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. the dealer had not received authorization to repair the vehicle because there was no electric power steering recall. in addition, the five year warranty statute expired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided a case number. the approximate failure mileage was 60,200. *bf *jb
Driver fault assist error. the power steering stopped working and vehicle had to be towed. had to have the entire power steering column replaced. this happened when the car was parked after driving on the highway for 3 hours. we stopped for a break at a rest stop and when the car was started to continue the trip it gave the error and the power steering didn't work.
While driving the escape through city streets, an error showed up on the dash and said 'steering assist failure. needs service.' at that point, the powering steering stopped and it became extremely difficult to turn the steering wheel. this has happened twice to the car in the past 24 hours. i have restarted the car with each incident but after already driving, the error came back up. i believe that this can be due to an electrical issue or power steering component failure.
I was leaving home, got into vehicle, started it and noticed alert that said 'steering assist fault, service required'. i had not had any issues when driving the vehicle the day before. upon attempt to drive vehicle i realized there was no power steering. drove vehicle to dealership for service. was told they would have to look at. it. my extended warranty (5 years/60,000 miles) was expired because i had 64000 miles on it. repair and rental car for three days (happened on a saturday) were out of pocket. ended up being the steering gear assembly. repair was just under $2000. three day car rental was $100. there was a recall on older vehicles for steering but not for my model year. there was no warning that there was an issue. if i had been driving in the middle of turning it could have been very bad. there are other reports of the same thing happening to others so i do not believe the issue with the steering has been fixed. steering should not go out with so few miles on the vehicle.
I was driving on a highway with my family and felt a tightness in the steering so pulled over for a rest stop then when i tried to leave by turning back onto the highway the steering wheel locked up and made it difficult to turn so had to leave vehicle behind dealership said it wasn't nothing wrong with vehicle and no recalls but this is a known issue with later years of escape and other suv
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford escape. while driving, the steering wheel seized. an independent mechanic assisted the contact with the vehicle for it to be driven. the vehicle was taken to al packer ford west palm beach (1530 n military trl, west palm beach, fl 33409) where it was diagnosed that an unknown part related to the steering needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000. the vin was not provided. *bf consumer stated steering was totally locked and the vehicle could not steer.*jb
The 'steering assist fault, service required' popped after turning my car off for gas and then turning it back on when i was ready to go. without any notice or any previous issues i was unable to steer my car. this car can still be driven but with limited steering capacity, which is very unsafe.
Without notice, it started my vehicle and received a "steering assist fault" message and lost all power steering.one mechanic said that it was a ford software update that wasn't compatible with my electronic steering.i took it to ford dealership and they said the rack and pinion gear was the problem. $2,000 repair.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford escape. the contact stated that the steering wheel seized and the electric power steering warning indicator illuminated. randall ford (5500 rogers ave, fort smith, ar 72903, (479) 452-1311) was notified and stated that the vehicle was not included in any steering recall campaigns. the contact felt that if the same oem part was replaced without a remedy, the failure may recur. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no assistance. the vin and failure mileage were not available.
While driving power steering completely failed. the wheel jerked a bit but i was able to maintain control and pull over. when i attempted to turn the wheel i had no power steering at all. i took to my mechanic and was told the steering rack needed to be replaced at a cost of $2000. car as 100k miles. my concern is there was no codes or fault displayed on instrument cluster. the next day i drove the car and the power steering was fine. the next day driving it failed again. still no service needed light or notification on instrument cluster. car is unsafe to drive for someone not strong enough to turn the wheel without power steering.
Power steering went out on me while driving out of nowhere. was driving fine not even 8 hours beforehand. after turning on the car the steering was hard to keep control of. as i kept driving the power steering was locking up and sounded like it was grinding gears together. after stopping for food, turned the car back on to reverse and the steering wheel had locked and on the dash it stated 'steering loss. park safely.' after this and everything locked i called a tow truck to tow it home in my driveway.
Son was driving car on local roads when power steering failed. he was eventually able to pull to the side of the road and wait for tow truck. car was delivered to sheehy ford dealer in gaithersburg, md. received call today that the rack and pinion steering on the car, with fewer than 75,000 miles, "burned out" and related repairs run $2,400+. my brief research of the matter suggests that this is a manufacturer issue and should be covered by ford and the dealership as if it were a recall. it appears that ford has capitulated in some instances and instructed dealer to repair at no cost. how do i compel the manufacturer to do the same for me?
My 2014 ford escape is only 4 years old and the power steering locked up while it was parked in a parking structure. i could barely turn it to get it out of the structure then i had to have it towed to the dealership who said it would cost $2000 to repair. there are recalls for older models but not 2014. luckily this happened while parked and not while i was driving on a busy road. very unsafe. i don't expect such expensive repairs from a car this age.
I was driving on the highway and all of a sudden the steering wheel froze up and would not turn unless using tremendous force. i was lucky not to be in an accident. the car only has 56-58k miles and is not that old. i was now charged by ford almost $2,000 to replace the steering system. i have read abt this from other owners on-line, but there seems not to be a recall for something that can potentially cause an deadly accident.
2014 ford escape 60,000 miles replaced the battery lost control of power steering had to bring to ford dealer they said it would need to be re-flashed they than called and said it needed new rack and pinion for the steering and new alignment for $2200 not sure if this was the problem if this is typical of the escape but it should not of happened with a vehicle with this few of miles.
The fan blower motor works intermittently. that is, it doesn't always work when activated. moreover, it has now completely stopped working. this causes extreme safety issue when windows are fogged up inside vehicle, preventing driver from seeing. happens when vehicle is driven and when stationary.
As i reversed out of a parking space and tried to turn the wheel it suddenly became very difficult to turn the wheel at all. a message on the dash basically said "steering assistance failure - service required". i put the car in park, turned it off and than turned it back on. there was no message. 70,376 miles
Vehicle was turned on and then set to drive but light came on saying there was a steering issue and steering wheel was completely locked and was not able to move car.
Failure at 80,000 miles, however the engine was replaced with a new engine at 76,000 due to problems from the coolant recall; this time the vehicle would stall when coming to a stop or while driving. computer screen would show "system shutting down"; vehicle would go into "limp" mode, reduce speed and car would shut off without notice. vehicle was towed in after issue occuring 4x in a 2 mile drive. vehicle was towed in. advised by the dealership that they could not duplicate the problem. after 30 days they returned the car with 75 miles test driven and showed that the tech reset the computer module prior to duplicating the issue. the service manager had me "reset" the vehicle by driving it. while driving 55mph the issue reoccurred at 100 miles after the system reset. the vehicle would not restart and was towed into the dealership. after a week they were able to duplicate "some" but not all of the issues. after speaking with the general manager of the dealership they decided to purchase the vehicle back by paying off the existing loan in exchange for purchasing a 2018 ford escape.
Steering rack bound and vehicle would not steer. after letting it sit the warning lights did not come back on and the car steered. dealership said it is electronic steering and the steering rack is bad. no warranty at 45000 miles.this happened on interstate 95 in north carolina.
I started my vehicle, reversed then put it into drive. a warning sensor popped up stating steering assist failure. the steering wheel would not move. i put the vehicle into park and restarted it. the warning sensor no longer appeared. i researched this happening to the same vehicle model and it seems to be an ongoing problem with the ford escape. seems dangerous to not have a factory recall already , what if i were driving down a busy street or highway.
2014 ford escape at approximately 51,xxx miles experienced a loss of power steering while driving on the highway. vehicle was towed to the dealership it was purchased from. over a week later, they confirmed that the epas had failed. there are recalls on other vehicles from this year, ford refused to take complete responsibility when we had called in to complain. the dealership acknowledged there were issues, and said they could have it fixed the next day. after awaiting a response from ford, two days later, the dearler was out of racks to make the repair. we did not have the vehicle back until almost a month later and over $600 (ford covered the replacement rack but would not pay labor). upon investigating, we found that there was a class action brought up in california that never gained enogh momentum for ford to take the responsibility they should have.
2014 ford escape. consumer writes in regards to power steering failure. *ld the consumer requested for the manufacturer to reimburse the repair cost. *js *js
My steering wheel locked on the car on a trip and i couldn't drive the car. it was towed to koons ford on monday july 9th and it was not even looked at by thursday when i came home from my trip. i have tried several times to call the service man and he won't return my calls.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford escape. while driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle lost all ability to steer. the message center displayed ?power steering assist contact dealer immediately ". the vehicle was towed to the dealer (wehr ford, 11311 us-60 bus, mountain grove, missouri 65711) where it was diagnosed that the power steering module failed and needed replacement. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 3,450.
Driving began to get jerky then the warning popped up on dash steering fault service now! and now steering is completely gone can not turn left or right it
Power steering completely went out without any warning or indicator lights.we were driving to my daughters graduation and was coming around a turn and when it went out we collided with a mailbox luckily no one was injured as we had our 4 month old grandson in the car after we all calmed down we researched the problem and found that all the ford escape from 2008 through 2011 had the same problem with steering and ford has not fixed this because 2014 vehicles are having the same issues at least over 1000 complaints online i have read so far and i am sure there are many more.
Was turning to park my car at hotel, turning left, steering froze, got "steering assist fault notice on dash. could not steer car at all. frozen, had to have car towed by aaa to auto nation, ford dealer in bradenton, fl. first day of vacation. had to lease a car for three days.
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford escape. while driving various speeds, the vehicle made an abnormal grinding noise. in addition, the steering wheel pulled to the left and right, causing the contact to veer into other lanes. the dealer (briarwood ford, 7070 e michigan ave, saline, mi 48176) was notified. the manufacturer was contacted and did not assist. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 52,000.
Backed up out of driveway then shifted forward and my power steering gave out.the warning only came after the incident. was able to pull over and restart the car .. no issue but was told it was electronic steering module epas. a known issue but was told the recall was only in regards to receiving the warning that you had a failure.
2014 ford escape titanium - while driving the car in dry weather on a clear street, with no external causes (bumps, accidents, quick movements), the car popped up a message that said "steering assist fault" and the steering wheel locked up. it was virtually impossible to steer. the vehicle was slowed down and stopped and the engine was turned off. upon restarting the vehicle, the steering assist fault message was no longer visible and steering was normal again. this is a very scary occurrence. had the fault occurred in a situation where steering was necessary it would have almost certainly caused an accident. in researching online, i see this was a recall issue with previous ford escape vehicles as well as other ford vehicles such as the ford explorer.
I was driving ford escape, suddenly my power steering was stucked and i couldn't move it. fortunately it was happened on stop sign. i tried hard to move my steering and try to pull my car upto dealership. i found ford did so many recalls in previous year. one important thing is that my ford has only 36500 kms on it. i presented this case to ford dealership and they hand it over $2450 bill. this is serious issue regarding safety on road. it needs to be open recall for this issue and ford has to fix this problem.
The power steering intermittently works. it went out for a week, was fine for a month and a half and now isn't working again. ford has stated it requires an entire new power steering rack for $2100.
Power steering assist failure. numerous times in the last month the power steering does not engage right away.today 10/10/17 i received a warning to service power steering assist.very costly cannot afford 1400 dollars at this time.from some research ford is aware of this problem.
Seatbelts don't retrieve back in, rust under steering column
Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ford escape. while driving low speeds, the power steering assist fault warning indicator illuminated and the power steering failed. the contact stated that the steering became difficult to operate. the vehicle was towed to mullinx ford (located at 7311 airport blvd, mobile, al 36608), but had not yet been diagnosed. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 17,334.
