On average, the 2013 Ford Escape starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 62 432 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2013 Ford Escape

Driving to work one morning in a 40 mph zone, about 1.5 miles, warning lights appeared and stated that the vehicle was overheating and to pull over safely. the temperature gauge had shot up to h for hot. the vehicle immediately slowed down, regardless of pressing the gas. i was able to pull off of a us highway and find a safe place to park just a short distance. the vehicle needed to be towed to the dealer.

Vehicle was attempting to merge onto a freeway, speeding up, and the vehicle stopped accelerating at a normal rate of speed around 30 mph. it took an unacceptable amount of time for it to get up to a safe merging speed, but i could have died trying to merge. there is something wrong with the design of the power train on this car.

Leaking coolant on the engine started a fire. the dealership want to charge me over $9,000 to fix it but the trade in value is only $9-10,000. the car was in motion on the highway and started smelling antifreeze. the temperature gauge only moved a bit, but then it caught fire.

Vehicle suddenly goes into limp mode and almost stalls out. warning lights and sounds alert driver that engine temp is dangerously high and to pull over safely. this has happened 4 times in last year. each time it was towed to mechanic and something coolant related has been replaced. hoses, thermostat, sensors, coolant solenoid. once again here we are and it has happened again. i had to try and safely pull off the road with no power and hesitation on a 65mph highway.

Engine shuts down in traffic due to engine coolant warning, car has history of this repair starting in 2012, 2014 and 2015 recall repair, september of 2018, i paid $1250 to have coolant sensor repaired only to have engine shut down 2 months later for same problem, this is a serious safety issue since engine literally starts shutting down in traffic so quickly it is impossible to safely pull over. contacted ford and they confirmed history of repairs and even had record of repairs but denied responsibility even though it is same 5 repairs and same part.

Intermittent check engine light (happens when in park or when driving). hooked up to code reader and got p026b7; found online that the the engine coolant bypass valve is defective, but not recalled (tsb 13-02-15). dealer confirms code and that engine coolant bypass valve is defective and should be replaced but referenced tsb 16-0052. the dealer claims it isn't covered under any form of warranty/recall

Takata recall: while my vehicle is in motion the heat is coming out normal but will start to smell like something was burning but as i slow down or come to a complete stop the car starts blowing very cool then the tempature gage moves to h then the safety light pops on showing "overheating stop safely" but the car will never show any smoking from the hood. the car has been doing this for the past month until 12/17/2018 i started the car up to warm it before i left work, and it wouldn't defrost and immediately the temperature gage moved to h and on the dash it said overheating stop safely and the car wasn't in motion neither had it warmed up properly but when the light went off i was able to drive , as i approached my destination the car started slowing down on its own and the safety light came on again that's when the burning smell started getting stronger and it wouldn't let me give the car gas to go the odometer wouldn't move pass 5miles so i stopped the car and shut it off, but then when i started it up again before work the car would allow me to shift gears but not give it gas due to the car saying it's is overheating but the vehicle has never had a leak and has not physically showed leaking on to the ground i have had oil and fluids changed by professionals and authorized dealerships like valvoline and where i purchased the car and nothing was ever reported to me of a leak any where but somehow my coolant reservoir is staying empty after being refilled. i believe the only place the fluid could be leaking is within the motor because i have parked the car in several dry spot and it showed absolutely no leaking signs.

While driving low coolant light came on followed by engine over heating warning, to shut down when safe to do so. this happen twice. each time complete loss of power. i was informed by ford mechanic loss of power is fords way of not damaging engine. highway driving is a surely a life & death situation. first time issue on city street september 14 2015. repair replace water pump. second time on highway november 19, 2018. second repair pending. big concern is total loss of power to save an engine with little concern for people. something seriously wrong with this thinking. another on going issue is vehicle hesitate when accelerating from stop position or while moving. always have to be sure there is plenty of space, never know when it will happen.

Coolant low light and engine will shut down. have to add coolant about every 6 weeks or this will happen. i'm a female college student and this shouldn't be happening!! has been doing this for about 18 months. have taken twice to ford to have fixed and they replaced a sensor once i know don't think they did anything the first time i took it. since it only does this about every 6 weeks i guess they aren't going to do anything about it. thanks (xxxx) parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

I bought my ford escape 2013 in march 2016 as used car. from the beginning i have problems with engine coolant. coolant just disappears. i went to the mechanic and he said that heater hoses have to be replaced. i did it. but still i have to add coolant because it evaporates somehow. nobody knows how to fix it and what is wrong, because it looks that cooling system is ok, but is not. i'm afraid to travel long distances because of this problem.

I came to a stop at sign. the engine stalled. i put it in park and restarted the engine. it took an extra amount of time to start but did restart. i then proceeded to turn onto a busy road. upon acceleration the vehicle hesitated and would not accelerate or respond to throttle input. i was able to pull to the side of road and narrowly avoid an accident. the check engine light did not illuminate nor are there any obd codes. doing a little research, i have noticed that there are other year make and models that are having the same issue. i urge you to rectify this situation with ford. this is not only a danger to me and my family but also to other drivers on the road.

Loss of antifreeze, constant refilling. i have to refill it every week or less. checked system and pipes, could not find issue. hard smell of chemicals in vehicle while driving but even stronger while stationary.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving, the engine fault and service now warning indicators illuminated and the vehicle partially stalled. in addition, the rpms, temperature gauge, and fuel gauge decreased to 0. as the contact continued driving, the gauges returned to normal. the contact stated that the failure occurred three to five time while driving down the road. the vehicle was taken to kendall ford of meridian (250 e overland rd, meridian, id 83642, (855) 982-8853) where the contact was informed that the vehicle was included in an unknown recall regarding the software unit. the software was updated, but the failure recurred ten times within three miles after leaving the dealer. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where a diagnostic testing was completed and the contact was informed that a negative battery terminal was causing the failure. the vehicle was repaired. the contact stated that the failure went away and then recurred. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer a third time. the dealer test drove the vehicle and it stalled while driving. the technician informed the contact that the mcu needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided a case number. the approximate failure mileage was 135,000.

Car overheated as i was driving on the highway. had to pull over on an exit ramp. attached is my bill from ford for the repairs.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while attempting to accelerate from a stop, the vehicle stalled and the check engine indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to mall of georgia ford (4525 nelson brogdon boulevard, buford, ga 30518, 678-804-7726) where it was diagnosed that the canister purge valve caused the failure. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 18v735000 (engine). the failure mileage was 96,272.

Driving suv on a city street when engine became overheated & shut off due to a coolant leak.

My 2013 ford escape had an engine fire in nov 2018. what happened matches a recall ford had on a coolant leak causing an oil lead causing the fire. i contacted ford asking for a refund for my repairs because it matched the recall. they are telling me no because my car was not listed in recall. i asked if it was possible that there were cars not listed on the recall, but had the problem and was told yes. asked how i could have i case looked into again for possible payment and was told to contact the nhtsa, which is what i am doing.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled while driving, when stopped, and when pulling out in traffic. an independent mechanic diagnosed that the electronic throttle body or the engine wiring harness was the cause of the failure. flammer ford of spring hill (3335 commercial way, spring hill, fl 34606, (352) 686-8255) quoted a repair cost of approximately $800. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 89,700.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that the engine had a coolant leak, which resulted in the engine smoking without warning. the contact stated that the smoke occurred sporadically while driving various speeds. the contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic and was informed that the heater hose needed to be replaced. the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that there were no recalls on the vehicle. the contact associated the failure with nhtsa campaign number: 12v431000 (engine and engine cooling). the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure mileage was 60,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving, the vehicle failed to respond when the brake pedal was depressed and the engine revved high. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to duplicate the failures. the vehicle was taken to briarwood ford (7070 e michigan ave, saline, mi 48176, (734) 429-5478) to be diagnosed, but they were also unable to duplicate the failures. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 68,000.

When driving this vehicle, it ser me like it is not running right, and think it is going to die on us in traffic. the front seat belt does not go back in the area where it belongs and sits on the front seat. the passenger driver side door does not close right when you open it. it will stay open until you push the handle down and then it will close and lock. we are afraid to travel long distance with the vehicle because of the way the car acts and run. we just want it fix or replace vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that water was leaking from the water pump and the pump was loose and making a loud noise. also, the vehicle overheated and could not be driven. the vehicle was taken to tomball ford (22702 tomball pkwy, tomball, tx 77375, (281) 378-3160) and they stated that the vehicle exceeded the 60,000 mile and extended warranties. the dealer also mentioned that the vin was not included in a recall; therefore, they would not cover the repair cost. the manufacturer also stated that there was no recall on the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 80,000.

While driving the vehicle gave a low coolant message then said vehicle overheating and i had to pull over immediately. it did not give me much of a chance to pull over safely because of the loss of power. luckily i was just pulling out from a parking lot and drove into the next lot. the car had been parked at least 30 minutes and could not have gotten to full temp by the time the message came up. the car began to shake and shudder until i turned off the engine. i could then restart the car and it would idle and rev up fine in park but as soon as i tried to drive it would stumble again and give the overheating message. this is the 1.6l ecoboost engine. it has done this a couple times intermittently. i topped off the coolant and was able to drive the vehicle home. i've read lots of similar complaints on this vehicle and feel this should be a recall for ford to take care of. it has been in for multiple warranty repairs including recall 13s12-s2 which was for these overheating issues. ford knows there is a problem but for some reason did not include the 2013 model year in the other recalls. how many vehicles need to overheat and catch fire before ford is held accountable?

I reported previously and now have the full report from the dealership. while driving at the ymca in liberty township the car stalled out and would not restart. the computer stated engine overheating find a safe place to pull over. upon doing so i had the vehicle towed the next morning. i was informed that the car is throwing codes that state coolant valve left open, along with 4 other codes that were tripped. the ford customer service told me multiple times this was unrelated to the previous coolant sensor recall however the 54 pages of information as well as the dealership are stating otherwise.

Stalls randomly at low rpm, seemingly it's same exact symptoms as recall 14s17 which was for the larger 2.0 motor. vehicle hesitates and stalls and wont start easily. this happened on four separate occasions over 6month period. vehicle only has 50,000 miles

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while accelerating, the vehicle began to overheat. if the rpms increased to high, the engine warning indicator would illuminate for a few days. the contact would have to pull over to allow the vehicle to cool down and had to refill the antifreeze more often than normal. the dealer (ciocca ford quakertown, 321 s. west blvd, quakertown, pa 18951, (844) 224-6525) stated that there were no recalls on the vehicle. the manufacturer had not been contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 90,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle stalled and would not accelerate when the accelerator pedal was depressed. the vehicle was coasted onto the road shoulder. the vehicle was able to be driven home after it was restarted several times. the dealer and manufacturer had not been contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 136,000.

Vehicle would display "high temperature, please stop" and temperature gauge would rise to the top within a couple of hours of driving. after displaying message, engine would lose power and vehicle became hard to control. this issue happened on different driving conditions. coolant levels are at correct level. after shouting down the engine, within a few seconds the temperature gauge would go back to the middle. this became more frequent, and as of december 6, 2018 the vehicle would not start without this message and the temperature gauge all the way to the top.

My 2013 ford escape has a cracked engine block, which caused the engine to overheat and shut down while in motion on the highway. i had noticed that it needed frequent refills of the engine coolant recently -- three times in one month (two of them in service shops). this pattern is similar to a 2012 recall that my vin isn't part of, so this makes me highly suspicious. the consumer referenced nhtsa action number pe18007. the consumer stated the engine was replaced. the vehicle began exhibiting signs of failure again. the coolant needed to be replaced more frequesntly that it should be.

Engine power and vehicle speed decreased without warning while driving down the road creating an extremely unsafe situation for me and my child. we were driving (not turning) approximately 30 mph through town when there was a sudden loss of power and the service engine light came on. tried to restart the engine and while the car would run, it would not gain speed.

Vehicle computer reports that vehicle is overheating and places the car into 'limp' mode. occurs while driving or as soon as it is place in drive after vehicle it has been siting overnight (in 60 degree conditions, did not happen at all during the summer). first occurrence was dec 2017 when the vehicle was being driven on a highway (55 mph) lost power and 'limped' to a parking lot. needed to be towed to repair shop. local napa repair shop did a full review and found nothing wrong. did not occur at all over the summer, latest was 10/5/18. vehicle was sitting over night (60 degrees), vehicle started, reversed from driveway and once in drive it entered 'limp' mode stating that it was overheating.

We have had this suv for about 2 years now, change oil every 3000 mile and done had the gears in transmission go out and now not even 6 months later warnings for engine overheating turn off safely but i'm not driving it. it has been sitting for hours. i read online that this make and model had recalls about this warning and for catching fire.

Engine will shut off in the middle of driving. if i try to turn it on it'll happen 3-4 times until it works fine again. i'm scared to drive it more than 5 minutes. it's been happening for weeks & i've taken it to several mechanics that cannot find the issue.

The 2013 ford escape had a recall for leaking coolant on back of engine. the one i have has that problem and saying it's not on that recall list. it's the recall that could start a fire.

I purchased a 2013 ford escape in 2015 with a trade-in of my 2006 dodge stratus. approximately, a year in i had to purchase a battery for the vehicle that only had 38, 000 miles. in 2017 i had to put more money into the vehicle for things outside of basic ware and tear. in june i had to pay $500.00 on canster purge valve that should have been a recall by ford motor company. also, my window cable broke two days after i paid $500 to get the engine fixed. currently my window remains taped up with use and it cost is $206 plus labor. as of september 24, 2018 my antifreeze was leaking and i took it to the dealership to have it fixed and i paid $542 including labor. approximately 6 days later (september 30) my car broke down on route 51 and lebanon church rd by shutting of in the middle of the road with smoke coming from the engine. i was on my way to church with my mother who is an army veteran with dementia. the vehicle had thick smoke from the engine which continue to 45 minutes. while being stranded i had to get my car towed to my home because the tow truck driver didn't know where monroeville was located and his truck had issues shutting off too. the vehicle is not safe with major engine issues that are "all" not being fixed by the dealer or company. as of august 2018 the vehicle is on recall for replacing the shifter cable bushing on the transmission due to "roll away" concerns. these vehicles need to be pulled off the road and refunds need to be issued.

When i come to a stop then press on the gas pedal to go the engine will rev up to about 4000 rpm's but i don't go any faster. the car will then stall for a bit. when pressing on the gas pedal to try and go it will hesitate and then finally kick in and i can continue on. this has happened driving around in the city as well as on the highway. it seems to only do this when i am going slower speeds and when i have to stop and go.

Coolant light and hot engine light came on. car was completely empty of coolant. filled it up and within 4 miles, totally empty. had independent mechanic look at it. told the water pump shaft literally cracked. no issues prior to this. reported to ford said there is nothing wrong and that my vin was not included in any recall. this is bogus. car is 5 years old with 55,000 miles. never had issue with coolant until 2 days ago. no warning whats so ever and went from full coolant to empty within a 3 mile radius. am i supposed to carry around cooolant with me. driving 35 miles per hour, lights came on, immediately pulled over. added coolant car ran normal, then lost all coolant again. plus in addition, no one can work on this as "special tools are required" how convenient for ford. more business for them and their service departments

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while attempting to accelerate from a stop with the accelerator pedal depressed, the vehicle stalled. the contact had to turn the ignition off and back on to drive the vehicle. the contact stated that the failure occurred numerous times. the dealer (gresham ford, 1999 powell blvd, gresham, or 97080) was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and did not assist. the failure mileage was 127,356.

Vehicle has stalled many times when first proceeding into traffic after a cold start or has even stalled after cold start before proceeding(while parked). vehicle has been taken to a ford dealership for service. they did not fix the issue due to the fact that there was no check engine light showing and they could not recreate the problem.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving 25 mph, the check engine and battery indicators illuminated and a strong fuel odor was detected in the vehicle. the contact stated that the vehicle vibrated and hesitated to accelerate. an independent mechanic came to the contact's residence and stated that the cylinder misfired. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 13v583000 (engine). the vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing or repairs. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 86,667.

While driving engine light comes on with warning to pull over engine overheating. coolant is full.

The car overheats without warning. the hot engine warning goes on and the car loses power making it unable to move. it has happened once when i was stopped at a light and another time when i tried to start it after shopping. i believe i was driving the first time it happened.

Car started and i backed out of my driveway where it then stopped. i coasted to the side of the road and started the car back up, and it started normally. i drove to get my oil changed where they also filled up all my fluids. the next day my car shuddered when it started but still was able to run. 2 days later my car would not start and the low level coolant indicator came on. 30 mins later my car was able to start but my coolant level is low.

The engine stalls out in the middle of the highway. it has done this off and on for 2 out of the 3 years ive had it. also, mysteriously runs low on coolant and ive been getting warning signals telling me engine temperature is dangerously high, even if i just start the car! *dt

Hose clamp rubbed hole in ac line was repaired at dealership and is doing it again. car is leaking coolant after being tested at dealership car keeps leaking coolant have to keep putting coolant in car every other day no leak is being seem recalls have been done for this issue but my car was not included. i was driving the car then the car started to shake and said low coolant then the car just died in the middle or the road 4 days after getting car tested and coolant added to the car. one of the hose clams rubbed a hole in this ac line than i started having coolant problems replaced ac line at dealership for it to be rubbing hole in line again. car is currently at dealership again.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while the vehicle was stationary and while driving various speeds, it stalled without warning on more than one occasion. after the failures, the contact turned the vehicle off and it was unable to be restarted. the vehicle was towed to several independent mechanics. coggin deland ford-lincoln (2655 north volusia avenue, orange city, florida 32763, (386) 490-4325) was made aware of the failures and replaced the low pressure fuel pump sensor. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and provided the contact with case numbers: cas-as15834530 and cas-1576. the failure mileage was approximately 77,000.

Engine shuts off while driving. it only happens when you first start the car and begin to accelerate, which is particularly problematic because you are usually pulling into traffic in those moments. i have been crossing busy roads many times when the engine completely stalls out. it is hard to duplicate the problem at the dealership because it doesn't always happen, and it doesn't turn on a check engine light. the ford dealership has been unable to diagnose this problem for months, leaving me driving a death trap. it finally happened enough times in a row yesterday that it turned on a check engine light, ford is able to replace the part now. i was standing next to someone at ford who had the exact same problem, and many other drivers have experienced this as well.

Engine stalling in traffic. but no engine code showing. hard to restart after stalling. this was on a city street. also missing when going up hill.

I purchased my vehicle in july of 2018 from murfreesboro volkswagen . 2 months after i purchased once a month the low coolant light comes on and when i add a little coolant to it the light goes out. but once a month you have to add coolant to it.

Car has check engine light on for coolant bypass valve needing replaced. i am going through coolant quicker than it should, and the engine light for overheating comes on about once a month. the part has been part of a recall for later models of my car, but not mine.
