I have a 2013 ford escape with 73k miles. last week as i pulled into my driveway, the low coolant light came on when coolant was added it drained out of the water pump onto the driveway. apparently ford is the only resource to fix this issue. they also had to replace the timing belt as it had been contaminated. this repair came to $1600. i have also seen many complaints on several on line forums where folks are having the same issue.
Has been leaking coolant intermittently for past couple of years. dealer checked in past but no cause found. has gotten worse past month. today told by dealer service department that it is leaking coolant from the engine and the 1.6 ecoboost needs to be replace at a cost of $2500. vehicle has about 55,000 miles with all preventive services performed. no excuse for this other than a manufacturing design defect in the engine. this has been documented on early versions of the escape with some recalls done. this presents safety issue for engine catching on fire and should be addressed by nhtsa with extension of safety recalls to protect all ecoboost engines. ford is responsible for this and should be held accountable.
The engine will stall while driving. it has been doing it after being off for 0-60 minutes. i won't be able to accelerate and then the car starts shaking and shuts down.
Engine stalls while in motion. you can only roll to the side of the highway. will restart after sitting awhile. very dangerous.
Recalls on ford escape. i am aware that a lot of the 2013 ford escapes have recalls on them. mine was not included in the recall but i have a leak in my coolant hose that i am having to replace now. i have had a lots of trouble out of the vehicle. i had to replace the radiator a couple of years back and my car for the longest time would just stop in middle of the road after taking off.
This car has the exact same engine and coolant system as 2014 model and that model was recalled for coolant leak on engine that could cause engine overheating or engine fore, for some inexplicable reason 2013 was not included in the recall. my vehicle has this exact problem. this is absurd.
I have a ford escape sel 2013. i am having problems with the coolant leaking. i had an diagnostic test done and it came up saying "error code p1299, cylinder head temperature sensor detected engine overheating condition". i called ford company and a ford dealership to question about the sensor and was told there was no recall on my particular suv. my friend and i took to the internet to see what was wrong with the suv and under ford and nthsa there has been recalls on this particular issue with the ford escape 2013 sel. we called ford and the same dealership again and was told there is no recall for this issue on my escape. i called nthsa and was asked for my vin number and was told also there is no recall on this part. i don't understand how my vehicle is not part of this recall when other 2013 escape sel's are. i would like to have this further investigated because my suv is doing the same thing as the other escape sel suv.
The vehicle is stalling. in motion, typically just after applying gas or while slowing down to a stop. firestone auto repair stated that the alternator was producing high voltage and causing issue with the battery. they repalced the alternator and battery, but the issue still remains.

I have a 2013 ford escape and it stalls in the parking. i drive to the store and park do my shopping i start the car and begin to pull away and it dies or stalls. the car runs great and starts the way it is supposed to but stalls or dies and engine failure light comes on. it has happened several times but started in early feb of this year
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact smelled coolant and noticed coolant leaking under the vehicle. the failure occurred intermittently. the orange to red warning indicator for the coolant system flashed "low" and "service required". the vehicle stalled more than once due to reduced engine power. the vehicle was not included in a recall campaign. an independent mechanic inspected the vehicle, but was unable to determine the origin of the coolant leak. the vehicle had to constantly have the coolant refilled to prevent an engine shut down while the vehicle was in motion. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the dealer was not contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 89,120.
Defect code p1299 says engine overheating but just started it and it is 6 degrees outside when it happened so hardly hot.... i pulled out of work parking lot and car entered 'limp' mode - i could not even back up to get back in the work parking lot. let it 'cool down' for 15 minutes and then tried again to get it to the dealer just 1/4 mile from my work. died again on the main road - pulled to the side and waited another 15 minutes (did i mention it was 6 degrees?) then started and flew to the dealer and it limped the last 100 feet again. the dealer did not have time to look at it the next day so i had it towed to another service station and they found the code. but engine is not overheated...no sign of leaking or anything but the code - we wiggled all the wires on the sensors and car started and is running with no issue. ... yet. going to get the sensor replaced now and hope it solved the problem.
Around january 2018 the low coolant light was illuminated. the coolant level was low and coolant was added. i took the vehicle to tom's ford, keyport for evaluation and no issue was found. in january 2019 the low coolant light came on. i checked the coolant level and it seemed fine. the next day about 5 minutes into driving the high engine temperature warming came on and the vehicle said to safely stop. i parked and checked the coolant and it was half empty. i waited a few minutes and restarted the car to drive to the closest service station. after 30 seconds the warning light came on again. i parked and walked to the service station to buy coolant and added it to the vehicle. the warning light went out and the vehicle drove ok. i took it to tom's ford on january 4th for evaluation. i was told that there was an internal coolant leak in the engine and would need to either replace the engine or tear it down to find the problem. i took the vehicle home unrepaired due to the cost. i see the many other 2013 escapes have had a similar issue. it was also recalled in december 2012 for a coolant leak issue.
Certain 2013 ford escapes have been recalled due to an engine coolant leak which led to engine fires. my vin is not on the recall list however i have had to put coolant in my vehicle probably 10 times now and this morning i turned my car on and it says 'engine coolant low' followed by 'engine temperature high. safety' ford costumer service and dealerships refuses to acknowledge that my car is having the exact same issues as the cars on the recall, they recommend a total engine replacement ($8,400). this car does not feel safe to drive and i don't want to have to have an engine fire for ford to realize other cars that are not on the recall list are affected.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. as soon as the vehicle was started, the coolant indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who could not determine the cause of the failure. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case number: cas17024599. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 69,616.
The car looses coolant inside the engine compartment. this vehicle was manufactured in july 2012, just outside the dates reported on your website for a potential fire risk from coolant leaks on these vehicles. your website days "august 2012" is the start date for the problem with these engines. should the date range be changed?
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that the vehicle shut off while idling at a stop sign. the vehicle restarted after the second attempt. the vehicle shut off again in stop and go traffic on the highway. the vehicle sputtered and finally restarted. the dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 99,500.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that coolant leaked periodically from the vehicle and the vehicle failed to start. every time the coolant was replaced, it would leak out. the contact also stated that the vehicle produced an abnormal burning odor and the check engine indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic multiple times, but no failure code could be located. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact planned to take the vehicle to paducah ford (3476 park ave, paducah, ky 42001, (270) 444-0011) for further diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 107,000.
My car is exhibiting the exact same symptoms as described in nhtsa campaign number 12v-551, ford recall 12s41 and this vehicle was made in the same time period as other 2013 ford escapes which are affected yet ford is telling me this has nothing to my vehicle. same time frame, same symptoms but not affected? how does that make any sense to anyone with a shred of common sense? the incident occurred driving home from the iga store which is approximately 1.5 miles from my home. the drive there was fine, driving back the car stated high temperature stop safely, along with it trying to shut down. shut the car off, waited approximately 15 minutes started the car, drove home, pulled in the driveway same message. parked the car, now unable to drive the vehicle due to reading this error it is a fire hazard. this model and year is in the time frame this particular recall was put in place.
While driving, my engine coolant low notice came on and then a beeping started and the warning came up the engine was overheating and to stop safely. i had the car checked, a heater hose and coolant replaced. 3 weeks later, again after a cold start (it was 25 out) i started the car and the engine coolant low warning came on and right after starting to drive, the warning noises came on and the car stopped. i had it checked by both ford and another mechanic. the other mechanic was told by ford it was a software update however, ford says there is not update and they cannot find anything wrong with the vehicle.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that the vehicle made an abnormal noise upon starting. in addition, the check engine indicator randomly illuminated and there was a constant loss of motor power upon starting the vehicle. the dealer (sunrise ford of north hollywood, 5500 lankershim blvd, los angeles, ca 91601, (877) 510-8967) was notified of the failures; however, the dtc was not present to replicate the failures. the vehicle was serviced by an unknown dealer for a failure regarding the throttle body prior to being repaired by ford of north hollywood. the unknown dealer inspected the vehicle, but was unable to determine a remedy to repair the throttle body failure. an independent mechanic diagnosed that the fuel line hose fractured onto the intake manifold near the engine, which caused fumes from the engine and fuel system to enter the cabin of the vehicle. the independent mechanic tested the vehicle and was to provide further technical guidelines to the vehicle owner. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 15v813000 (electrical system), 14v495000 (electrical system), 13v584000 (engine and engine cooling), and 12v336000 (engine and engine cooling), as well as nhtsa action number: pe18007 (engine and engine cooling). the vehicle was not repaired and was unable to be driven due to the failures. the manufacturer was contacted to address the multiple failures as well as the two service campaigns (field service action number: 12m02 and 14n02 that had not been received by mail from the manufacturer. the failure mileage was not available.
Electrical fire in engine compartment. car was parked for 10 minutes started smoking and then caught fire. totaled car. had recently had check engine light come on and say warning high temp. stop safely. took to ford they said it was a sensor on backorder. told me the car was not really overheating
For the past two years, i have to refill my engine coolant on average once a week. it drains quicker during winter months. i have brought it in multiple times but they keep telling me there is nothing wrong. this makes no sense since you rarely need to refill engine coolant this often.
My 2013 ford escape has a coolant leak which resulted in a water pump and hose replacement. this is the same issue that the 2013 1.6l ford escapes had when they were recalled. i have 66,000 miles on my vehicle and i have replaced the water pump and hose because of a coolant leak.
Car ecelerates on its on, transmisin jerks when u put it in gear after disengaging the hand break, rolling while in park with engine off, transmission jerks when charging from 1st to 2nd gear especially when pulling a hill. brakes not holding properly; i almost rolled back into a car today. check engine light randomly comes on & stays on. omw tl the shop to have a diagnostic done it goes back off.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving, the vehicle began to jerk and the coolant and check engine indicators illuminated. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled and could not be restarted. the vehicle was towed to courtesy ford (1636 dogwood dr, conyers, ga) where it was diagnosed that multiple coolant leaks were discovered. the cause of the failure was not yet determined. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 99,000.
After driving car 30 minutes then parking for 15-20 minutes upon restarting car & moving into traffic the car stutters then stalls. originally was intermittent problem now is a daily occurrence. taking car to mechanic today to get a diagnostic done. 1/25/2019.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving 60 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact had to turn the vehicle off and back on in order for it to resume normal operation; however, the vehicle stalled again when placed in reverse. the vehicle was taken to parks ford & lincoln of gainesville (3333 n main st, gainesville, fl 32609, (352) 372-4251) to be diagnosed, but the failure could not be duplicated. the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. the failure mileage was 75,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that the vehicle's gear shifter failed to change into any gear. the contact had to maneuver the gear shifter to ensure that the gears properly changed over. in addition, the engine coolant indicator kept randomly flashing and coolant leaked from the vehicle. the coolant had to be constantly checked due to being low or nearly empty. the vehicle was taken to king ford (9555 kings auto mall rd, cincinnati, oh 45249, 513-683-0220), but was not yet diagnosed or repaired. the vehicle was excluded from nhtsa campaign number: 12v551000 (engine and engine cooling). the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the failure mileage was not available.
Vehicle showed an overheating error light and began to stall in a parking lot. hood was popped and coolant investigated. coolant reservoir was empty. owner walked to nearest store, bought coolant, and replaced coolant. vehicle overheating light went away, but the check engine light stayed on. vehicle was brought to ford dealership for diagnosing. dealership ran pressure test and checked for visible signs of leak. dealership was unable to discover leak or issue. nothing was replaced or fixed. dealership told owner to just keep driving it as no issue was found. owner drove vehicle for 2 more months. upon getting an oil change, an independent mechanic said the coolant reservoir was empty and replaced missing coolant. vehicle has 57,000 miles on it.
My escape has stalled 2-3 times within a 12 hour window while moving. i was able to stop in the parking lot and re-start the vehicle.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while idling at a red light, the vehicle stalled. the contact turned off and restarted the vehicle in order to drive safely. once she approached another red light, the vehicle stalled again. on one occasion, prior to stalling, the vehicle shook uncontrollably and the check engine and oil indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to carmax (13300 n interstate hwy 35, austin, tx 78753, (512) 873-2315) to be diagnosed, but no failure was found. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 69,000.
A quick internet search reveals that this is a well documented problem in several different forums, yet ford has not taken any steps to ensure the safety of its customers. my car, in a fashion identical to the 140,000 escapes with the 2.0l engines, stalls suddenly while driving. it does this randomly, repeatedly, and without warning. i've been fortunate so far and have had the stalling occur only in low speed situations but i understand that other owners have stalled at high speeds. my car is a 1.6l and was not included in the recall. i've had the power control module replaced but that has not resolved the problem. how many more accidents are required before all vehicles will be fixed? the check engine light does not consistently illuminate preventing dealers from pulling the error codes and safely and efficiently resolving the problem. this is incredibly frustrating given the danger of the situation and the extensive documentation on the internet and the existence and correction of an identical problem in 140,000 other vehicles. it's unclear why the owners of 1.6l engines, which clearly suffer the same flaws and risks, are subject to severe injury, immense frustration, unresolved issues and escalating costs to drive what was supposed to be a reliable, safe family vehicle.
Sudden leak of radiator fluid and the engine light came on with extreme heat warning. car alerted to pull over immediately, and on the road it was a risky maneuver. towed to dealership where was informed it was a bad water pump and hoses. however it is very similar to existing recalls and complaints
I have a 2013 ford escape 1.6 eco boost. first issue was a faulty water cooling valve code p26b7. replaced the valve and 2 days later the low coolant light came on. topped off the coolant level and about 2 days later the coolant level light comes back on. my vin isn't covered by the recall, but the symptoms are the same as multiple coolant leak recalls .
Loss of coolant at or near the reservoir low level light goes on about every 3 weeks. mechanics have check system twice up to the firewall and have not found a leak/cause. the leak occurs both when the car is stationary or in motion as evident of the pool of coolant under the car in the driveway. this has been on going for about a year.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving various speeds, the vehicle stalled and the check engine indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to chipola ford (4242 lafayette st, marianna, fl 32446, (850) 482-4043) where the contact was informed that the engine coolant was leaking into the motor and that the motor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 13v584000 (fuel system, gasoline). the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 130,000.
2013 ford escape has been leaking coolant over the past few months. i have been filling it and the coolant low indicator continues to come on in increasing frequency. today(12/20/2018) it came on while driving, started to shake, displayed overheating, and then stalled on the side of the road. filled it with coolant and it was driveable again. i read that this is currently under investigation and beg that a recall will be issued to include the 2013s along with the 2014 and newer escapes.
Vehicle consistently displays low coolant warning and visual checks confirm low coolant levels. vehicle experiences intermittent sudden overheat warnings with rapid temperature gauge rise, resulting in the vehicle stalling while in motion. temperature bypass/diversion valve recall was performed earlier this year, but the problem persists. the last event occurred in heavy mid-town moderate speed (35mph) traffic, less than 5 minutes after start-up, and nearly resulted in loss of vehicle control.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that the vehicle was taken to pacifico marple ford lincoln dealer, located at 3015 west chester pike, broomall, pa 19008, (888) 320-6221, where it was serviced under nhtsa campaign number : 13v583000 (engine). the contact stated that the recall repaired did not correct the failure. the contact stated that six months later he experienced a failure with oil dripping down onto the exhaust pipe. the contact stated that when he inspected underneath the vehicle he notice the oil was dripping from the head gasket unto the exhaust manifold with little bubble bubbling. the contact also stated that there was a burning odor of oil coming through the vehicle vent. the contact also stated that smoke was coming from the passenger front side of the vehicle while it was stoped at a school lot. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for a diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact stated that the failure was progressively getting worse. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 57,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact took the vehicle to dahl ford (821 3rd st, la crosse, wi 54601) for repairs on the turbo. after the vehicle was retrieved, the contact noticed an odor of burning oil inside the vehicle. the contact took the vehicle back to the dealer and was informed that the odor would eventually go away after a couple of oil changes. the contact also stated that the odor inside the cabin was getting worse and the torque converter bolts were loose. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case number: cas-25206696. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 122,000.
The car hesitate or the engine stall soon after starting, if you don't drive off immediately the car will shut off and has to be restarted. this happens on cold starts but mostly after the car has been running.
Car is stalling out at low speeds, parking lots, lights, does'nt matter if it is hot or cold outside heater on or off, the last time it stalled out i was in a 45 mile zone and just cut out on me, i got to the center turn lane and got my flashers on, i had to get it to a stop, the worst part is not being able to steer it. i got it in park and it finally restarted and i was able to pull in to parking lot. it was raining and i could see a car coming in behind me, thank god it started right backup again. thought i had got some bad gas with water, ran the car to almost empty 2 times and put in gas treatments and the most expensive gas, didn't help. i also am getting low engine coolant even though i fill it every week. this started last winter, i don't get the warning during the summer only winter with the heater, ford supposedly fixed this when they found a leaking hose $812 dollars later still have to add coolant and still stalling out on me. i mentioned the recall and they told me my vin number was not included. ford mentioned new spark plugs and air filter, the only thing is i am not getting check engine code or light, just stops . talked with numerous mechanics and they all say if it was spark plugs etc, i would get a misfire code of some king. changed the air filter which it was long since i done this. looking into getting spark plugs changed but don't think that's the problem since i am not getting check engine light. think something else is wrong
Car stalls while driving. never happens when engine is cold. drive the car, turn off while in a store. then i restart the car, starts normal, then start driving again and it stalls while you are driving. after it stalls, i pull off the road if possible, then turn the key off, and back on. it starts up normal again and then no more stalling issue - until i stop at another store, and the same problem happens again, and again... only seems to happen after turning off the car for 5-30 minutes, and then try to start driving again there is a serious risk of having an accident!! when the car just dies while driving down a highway, and you have to try to pull off the road - serious risk of having a bad accident. this problem started about 6 weeks ago, and is getting worse. happens every day now!
Coolant leaking from unknown location with no dampness or residue found. low coolant in the reservoir is the only indicator of loss.
My 2013 ford escape sel 1.6l stalls without warning while driving. the subject vehicles are equipped with a 1.6l gtdi (turbo) engine. the stalling happened on the highway and just after starting and putting it into drive and pushing on the acclerator. additionally after the last stall (parking lot), the car seems to be in "limp mode" and needs towed to a service center.
When slowing down to a stop or at idle the vehicle lunges and stalls out. it does completely and the vehicle has to be restarted . sometimes this happens multiple times in a row. it happens after city driving , highway driving or while idling. the vehicle lunges and stalls and while doing so the vehicle does not respond to the gasoline pedal.
2013 escape was "routine" transmission serviced at matthews ford in broken arrow oklahoma on november 26,2018. after this service dealership was contacted and appt. made to re-check because of a jerk sensation in lower gear shifts. on december 6, 2018, about 60 miles from tulsa, traveling south on indian nation turnpike to texas, cruise control was engaged at 80mph. approximately 20 miles later, the traction light came on. cruise control and a speedometer did not match so cruise control was disengaged. jerking and sputtering began and the vehicle was pulled over and turned off. at that point smoke came from the hood of the engine and fire had ignited underneath. within two minutes the entire front end of the escape was in flames. (video of front in flames, and a trail of fluid leading up to the burning escape). it was completely destroyed including all content. contacted matthewsford and ford corporation and basically was told there was nothing they could do. insurance adjuster had assessed that there was no way to determine the cause of fire due to the extensive damage. matthewsford, not ford would not take responsibility and they should have in someway. they failed immensely.
2013 ford escape se. consistent low coolant warnings in the winter. needs coolant added every 4-5 weeks in colder months. neither ford service dept of my personal mechanic have been able to locate the issue. has twice overheated after being driven approximately one mile; low coolant light displays and almost immediately overheats and goes into limp mode. approximate mileage 57,700
False overheat & safety engine shut-down in motion
