Problems with 2013 Ford Escape VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

On average, the 2013 Ford Escape starts to “feel” problems with the VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL and its various aspects after 51 714 miles.

Components Affected by VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL Issues

We have classified the 62 complaints from 2013 Ford Escape about VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL into the following categories.

ACCELERATOR PEDAL 1

Recently reported VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL problems on 2013 Ford Escape

The vehicle while in motion on a city street suddenly decelerated and goes at a very slow speed. the accelerator will not move the car forward or faster. we have been told by a mechanic that it may be an issue with the shifter cable bushing. there was a recall: 18s20 but when i inquired with ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 they stated the vin to my car was not on recall. referred me to nhtsa or a ford dealer directly. i do not understand if the vehicle is the year and model why my car is excluded from this recall

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while depressing the accelerator pedal at various speeds, the rpms would rapidly increase and the vehicle would shut off without warning. the manufacturer was notified and informed the contact that the failure could be related to the throttle body. the contact was given a cost estimate for the repair and was advised to have the vehicle diagnosed at a local ford dealer. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the dealer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 126,000.

While in motion, the rpm are reduced, the car slows down, turns off and a "system check, service now" notice appears in dash board. there is a recall for same escape but 2.5, while this one is 1.3. right now it is at ford dealer for another evaluation.

My 2013 ford escape has demonstrated the same problems with the fuel injector (specifically the canister purge valve solenoid) that was part of last fall's focus recall. i had a problem last fall with my car whining, rocking when in stop and go traffic, smelling like burned fuel, and eventually stalling out entirely. last year the car stalled out multiple times initially while stationary, and eventually while in motion. experience was difficult to reproduce as it was sporadic and not consistent. we replaced the canister purge valve last year which resolved the problem, except the replacement part has now failed again a year later while i was sitting in busy rush hour traffic. my car started whining and rocking this morning while i was a stop, turned off the engine, and then i was unable to restart the vehicle for approximately 10 minutes (battery would engage, engine would attempt to turn but wouldn't catch). eventually i was able to start my engine and drive home safely. however i refuse to drive this vehicle again until the part is once again replaced.

Driving down the freeway, started to accelerate in sport mode, heard something pop. sounded like the clutch slipped or a belt broke. lost most acceleration. got off freeway to take side streets home. had a lot of trouble accelerating up hill. would accelerate but very slowly. not on pace with gears. was shifting weird. both in d and s. took me about 4 blocks to get from 0 to 25mph.

Vehicle in motion, highway and city speeds, engine is hesitating and stalling when accelerating. 2013 turbo ford escape

Mid-day, 91 degrees. car shuddered reversing out of the driveway. no previous problems. i waited and car idled well. i left the neighborhood and turned left into traffic on a five-lane road. i lost acceleration merging from the center turning lane. the vehicle revved, getting fuel, but there was no forward movement, no shuddering, nothing. i moved the vehicle into "sport" mode, in case i had bumped the selector, but it made no difference. traffic honked and swerved around me. i was able to get into the right lane with my hazard lights on. my car shuddered off, completely and i lost power steering just as i completed the maneuver. i restarted my vehicle and the vehicle shuddered to a side-street, where i idled for five minutes and called for assistance. assistance was going to take a long time and i suffer from a medical condition that makes me fragile in the heat. i tested the vehicle on the side streets and it performed. i was able to get the vehicle home slowly.

I was driving my family from houston, tx to san antonio,tx on july 5th 2019 for the holiday weekend in my 2013 ford escape sel with the 6f35 transmission. we were about 1 hour & 30 minutes into our trip, 108 miles, from our home near the city of flatonia, tx when our transmission horrifically failed. while i was driving i noticed the transmission had a made a hard shift into 6th gear. it had jumped a couple of times until i accelerated and then it finally shifted into 6th gear. the next sign of trouble was when the dash screen told us the lane change sensor was failing. next we started noticing a faint burning smell coming into the cabin, we weren't sure what it was. a minute later all the warning lights turned on in the dash screen. i immediately put on my turn signal so i could get to an exit and when trying to accelerate out of the way of traffic, i realized my ford escape was not responding to the acceleration pedal. it would not accelerate at all. so now i couldn't shift and my gas pedal was not functioning. i finally reached the nearest exit turned on my hazard lights and proceeded to coast into the nearest gas station since my gas pedal was not functioning. as soon as i stopped & turned off my suv, white smoke was coming from the engine bay. i quickly got my wife and 1 yr old daughter out of the suv and ran away from the vehicle. thankfully the smoke stopped and i opened the hood and saw transmission oil all over the top of the transmission. it was so hot it was boiling in the crevices where it had settled. this transmission is supposed to have "a special blend of transmission fluid maintenance free for the life of the gearbox." a couple days prior the transmission would jump erratically when shifting from 2-3 gear and from 5-6 gear even though it was an automatic transmission.but i had taken it to a ford dealer and they didn't help at all.

My escape all of a sudden completely stopped accelerating in the middle of driving took it to a ford dealer they said there were no codes the 2013 ford escape 2.0 was recalled for the same reason!!! you need to recall the 1.6 ford escape ecoboost my car litterly did what the recall said was happening

I have a transmission fault service soon error ! the car seems to think its in park while driven. it staules seems that it is slipping out of gears by its self

Intermittent stalling of my 1.6 liter ecoboost engine. it happens every 3 to 4 days and only happens after you start the engine and drive about 100 feet. the engine will lose power and die. you start it back up and it will display loss of power and die again. normally the 3rd time the engine starts and runs properly. it will then not have any issues for 3-4 days. it is dangerous because it will normally have this problem after gong to the store and when leaving you pull out of parking lot and it will stall merging into traffic. it has never done this while traveling at speed limit.

Car ecelerates on its on, transmisin jerks when u put it in gear after disengaging the hand break, rolling while in park with engine off, transmission jerks when charging from 1st to 2nd gear especially when pulling a hill. brakes not holding properly; i almost rolled back into a car today. check engine light randomly comes on & stays on. omw tl the shop to have a diagnostic done it goes back off.

Driving to work one morning in a 40 mph zone, about 1.5 miles, warning lights appeared and stated that the vehicle was overheating and to pull over safely. the temperature gauge had shot up to h for hot. the vehicle immediately slowed down, regardless of pressing the gas. i was able to pull off of a us highway and find a safe place to park just a short distance. the vehicle needed to be towed to the dealer.

When driving this vehicle, it ser me like it is not running right, and think it is going to die on us in traffic. the front seat belt does not go back in the area where it belongs and sits on the front seat. the passenger driver side door does not close right when you open it. it will stay open until you push the handle down and then it will close and lock. we are afraid to travel long distance with the vehicle because of the way the car acts and run. we just want it fix or replace vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that the transmission would not immediately shift into reverse after pushing the reverse selector button. the failure was also present when selecting the drive gear. in addition, when depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle would not immediately respond; however, the rpms continued to increase and the vehicle suddenly accelerated at a higher rate of speed. the failures were not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer and local dealer (doan ford, 66870 belmont morristown rd., belmont, oh) were notified of the failures. the failure mileage was 87,500.

This has happened now (2) separate times a month apart. while driving down the road at 70-75 mph the vehicle will loose power and tell me to pull over. i am not able to restart vehicle and the engine temperature will spike to hot. this all happens in a matter of seconds with little or no time to react and pull vehicle to a safe spot. there has been radiator fluid pouring over the engine on both times this has happened and is now costing me a lot of money to fix. i feel that this is an issue with the escape in general and not with just mine.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving approximately 35 mph, the check engine and the low coolant warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle started to decelerate and was coasted over to the side of the road. the contact opened the hood and noticed that the coolant container was half empty. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing to determine the cause of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 99,000.

When i'm running in normal speed sometime the acceleration is not working just like lost compression, then it's coming back in few of seconds..

The water heater hose on my 2013 ford escape has a leak in it. i cannot drive the car unless i fill up the water constantly which is not possible with how far i drive daily. it is part number cv6z-18472-s i took my car in on january 29, 2018 and was told there were 162 on back order and i would receive it by january 27, 2018. today is feb 1 and i was told the part won't be ready till march 7, 2018 and i have to just wait. now there are about 3200 of this part back ordered. why can i not drive my car for a month and a half? if there are over 3k back-ordered why is there not a recall?

For the last ten months or so, my vehicle has been stalling when pulling out after starting (in both hot and cold engine situations); almost always into traffic. it occurs as series of 3 or 4 consecutive stalls - has always restarted. this random stalling has and continues to take place 3 - 6 times a month. the closest call i experienced was in a large active parking lot. i do believe this has often occurred turning out of driveways and parking lots. i have addressed this with the same ford service department on at least four occasions, once having it taken over night to investigate. on all occasions, the response has been "failure to reproduce" the problem. the on board diagnostics have been of no use. as i understand, 2013 (among other) escapes have been recalled for this exact issue but my vin is not included in the recall. three different drivers have experienced these stalling events in my vehicle. what do i have to do??

My car will suddenly lose acceleration while driving. the engine does not shut off, simply the gas pedal does not work, even in neutral. i drift to side of road, restart the car and it is ok. reverse works fine when this happens.

Initially i had been having issues with the engine light coming on and off. initially when i took the vehicle to be looked at, by the hunt ford in la plata, md. they changed the oxygen sensor. so the light went off. then a few months later in 2016 the light came back on. eventually i started driving on route 5 north and heard a 'pop' noise in the engine area. the vehicle started to lose acceleration and would hesitate. then eventually my check engine light came on and started blinking. prior to the engine light blinking the car begin to misfire, hesitate when trying to accelerate, and the engine would overheat from time to time prematurely. the car would sometimes stall and misfire when trying to accelerate or when sitting idle. when i looked online it shows a recall for these specific issues for the same make, model & year, but not for my specific engine liter. for example, it shows the engine overheating, misfires and engine wiring splices may cause stall for 2013 ford escapes but only for 1.6l. my car is experiencing very similar issues as those listed under the recall, but my engine is a 2.0l. so while on my way home friday, 10/27/2017, i started to have issues with my vehicle. i was traveling on pennsylvania ave towards dc, when i reached an intersection (southern ave), and the car started to jerk and then the engine light started blinking. at one point i began to see white smoke once the engine light started to blink, and smelled fumes. not too long after that began to occur, i make a u-turn at the light and pulled over in front of the funeral home. before i was pulled over on the side of the road (while making the u-turn) the car started to misfire and stall. so i turned the engine off, and called aaa to have it towed. a few days later i had a mechanic come and run a diagnostic on the vehicle at the home. i have attached a copy of their report.

I was driving on a freeway at 65mph and the engine cuts out to an idle. the check engine light came on. i almost got rear ended getting the car over to the side of the road since it lost all power. after pulling over i was able to start the car as the light went out. this happened 3 more times where the car would cut out to a rough idle, these occurred while i was on city streets but almost caused 1 accident as it cut out. after shutting the car off it would restart with no issue. this last time the car had to be towed to planet ford to be repaired. they said it was a throttle body issue and it cost me over 700 for the repair even though it is still under the powertrain warranty. i do not see why this has not been recalled due to the car being unsafe to drive and i do not know why the replacement of the part alone will not cause further stalls of this vehicle. i have found other people with the same issue where the car goes into "limp home" mode. i am currently having the car repaired or i would be able to attach the invoice for the throttle body repair.

First complaint is the internal door panels do not properly fit and come loose becoming caught on the frame of the car not allowing you to open the door to exit the vehicle which is highly dangerous in an emergency. 2) the shift selector switch broke as my spouse was driving the car not allowing him to shift the car into park or shut it off. this is highly dangerous and quite common a mechanics told us.

After almost being killed when my car just stopped accelerating and check engine light came on it has happened more than once, several times. does someone have to die before we get this fixed???? i have seen 855 complaints for same problem with the same vehicle.... i have replaced 2 of the same sensors at metro for schenectady... when is there going to be a recall for my vehicle? there are numorous times this happened

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving 70 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle decelerated to 50 mph. in addition, the engine overheat warning indicator illuminated. the failure recurred several other times. the vehicle was taken to the local dealer (ron carter ford located at 3005 fm 528 rd, alvin, tx 77511; (281) 331-8111), but the cause of the failure could not be diagnosed. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the dealer contacted the ford hotline. the contact called the manufacturer at 866-436-7332. the manufacturer stated that the vin was not included in a recall. the failure mileage was unknown.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while at a stop, the vehicle shook violently. when the accelerator pedal was depressed, the vehicle was slow to move. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the failure recurred several times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer (parks ford of wesley chapel, 28739 fl-54, wesley chapel, fl, 813-907-7800) where a diagnostic test was performed. the technician was unable to determine the cause of the failure and concluded that the failure could be caused by wrong fuel. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to nhtsa. the vin was not provided. the failure mileage was 70,000.

Loss of power trun car off waite few mins star up run find till next time push on gas padal norting happen

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving at 35 mph, the vehicle independently reduced speed advertently as the engine or transmission warning light illuminated. the contact was unsure of which warning light was illuminated. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the sensor in the cooling system failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 30,000. the vin was unavailable.

My car started acting up when the check engine light came on. it has run at lower speeds , sputtering and seems to have loss of power while driving in local conditions no more than 15 miles or so. i called ford where i purchased the vehicle, and they offered to tow it. at first they made it seem like everything is covered, and now its 2 weeks later after them telling me its some sort of sensor that needs to be replaced and the cost is 1100 dollars, the car is 3 years old with 30000 miles on it , they will not fix the car until payment is made. it seems that its an issue they should have to fix on there dime not mine. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving approximately 10 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to accelerate. the engine stalled without warning. the contact was able to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. the vehicle was not repaired and the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was unknown. the approximate failure mileage was 58,000.

Engine fault service now signal came on & car would not accelerate. car was cutting out & difficult to drive.... manage to make it home slowly while driving w/emergency flashers. signal went away after car was turned off & was driven just fine after that. 2 weeks later exact same thing happened & fortunately i was close to ford dealership & was able to drive it there. electronic throttle body needs replaced & part is back ordered. and car is completely unable to be driven now.

Looses power, unable to accelerate even when gas pedal pushed to floor. it's been to the dealer twice. no problems detected. unable to duplicate. seems to occur while driving various speeds 55-45 mph, city driving, stop and go traffic. usually occurs after a stop/go traffic lights, right hand turns. occurred after first time between 25k?-30k miles. 2013 ford escape 1.6 ecoboost engine.

Was in reverse pulling out of drive way, cross traffic indicator went off and car began to shake, put car in drive and drove after it stopped shaking. when i came to the first light the car would not go even as i had accelerator all the way down, the car revved but did not move until a minute later it slowly began to move with accelerator all the way down. gradually it picked up speed again but kept on shaking. while at the light the car seemed to be loosing electrical power and felt as though it would shut off as it had lost all power before due to the collision indicators sensing a crash.

While driving down the highway i pushed on the accelerator to pass another car safely. the accelerator did not react for 4 seconds, this is a serious safety issue and if our government is not looking out for us, who is. i noticed other postings like this and i have complained to ford that i have a lemon and they have chosen not to do anything about it. do i need to start writing my senator or congress person for something to happen, what does it take for someone to notice these complaints, a death from these defects? ford has chosen to ignore it and apparently the nhtsa as well. i have had several issues with my escape and have complained to ford, i am a veteran and cannot afford a lawyer as i am putting three people through college. help!!!!!!!.....updated 10-27-15 *bf

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving at 20 mph, the vehicle failed to accelerate when the accelerator pedal was depressed. the failure recurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the manifold absolute pressure sensor had failed and needed replacement. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not included in the nhtsa campaign number: 15v813000 (electrical system). the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 86,000.

At start-up, there was an error message on the instrument panel about an engine fault instructing me to seek service immediately. as it was after 6 pm, and the dealer service shop was closed, i drive home. the engine was "sputtering" as if it was going to stall. the car had minimal power and didn't achieve a speed over about 25 mph. i ran a vehicle health report, which indicated a problem in the engine, transmission, or powertrain; it instructed me to have the car serviced. the next morning, there were no problems. at the dealer the following day, no problem codes came up, and the dealer wouldn't replace the etb since there isn't a recall. i believe, however, that the problem is the etb and that i'm being placed in an unnecessarily dangerous situation when the etb can fail unexpectedly. please issue a recall! *tr

Vehicle loses power and stalls either idling after start or within a tenth of a mile. this occurs even if the vehicle has been driven extensively then parked and restarted or from a cold start. this condition is hazardous as power has been lost entering traffic. the car must be stopped and placed in park and restarted. this occurs about every other day. ford dealership replaced splices in wiring harness per ford tsb15-0005. problem recurred. returned to ford. throttle body replaced. problem recurred; returning to ford again. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving at 30 mph, the vehicle decelerated, the transmission failed to shift into gear, and the check engine warning light illuminated. the engine was shut off and restarted, and the vehicle resumed normal operation. the failure recurred multiple times intermittently. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 14,200.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving various speeds, the engine stalled without warning. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to accelerate when the accelerator pedal was depressed. the vehicle restarted after numerous attempts. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v495000 (electrical system). the approximate failure mileage was 54,000.

Mileage above is from incident in 2/15, occurred first time at or about 9/14, and occurred again 3/15. on each occasion the car stopped accelerating. on the 3/15 occasion i was traveling about 45 mph on a 4 lane road....when this occurs i am on the gas pedal....not the brake pedal as i am trying to move the vehicle forward. i was terrified to be struck from behind and watched as traffic was coming towards me. each occurrence had a different repair because diagnostic code was different. i do not feel safe in this vehicle. i have contacted ford motor company.....for this issue as well as numerous other issues. i want to feel safe and not fear future problems. i can provide more information/and or complaints but as i am not that knowledgeable about cars, i trust that you will see all issues through my vin number provided. one question i have is about the diagnostic codes and their accuracy? *tr

Tl- the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that the cruise control failed to engage and disengage intermittently. the contact experienced an electrical short with the radio shorting out as well. the vehicle stalled multiple times and the contact had to make several attempts to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who replaced the wiring harness and the failure recurred. the contact noticed that the vehicle was idling rough, the cruise control was engaged and was stuck multiple times causing the vehicle to accelerate while attempting to disengage the cruise control feature. the vehicle also stalled more than five times and the contact was able to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was not safe to drive and was parked at the contacts residence. the vehicle was towed by the dealer to the authorized dealer for further inspection, diagnosis and repair. the contact was waiting for a response from the authorized dealer who was checking for approval from the manufacturer to repair the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure several times. the approximate failure mileage was 35,000. dyd

Foot slips off brake pedal..accelerator pedal and brake pedal are to close together.brake pedal needs to be wider to accommodate larger shoe sizes, mine are size 13.. in rainy conditions foot slides off brake pedal frequently. bad design from ford...hope i don`t have an accident before this condition is corrected. *tr

Driving in parking lot fan speed accelerated and then engine shut off. i tried starting again 3 times and the same thing happened. i called aaa and had the car towed to hyundai dealership in reno where we purchased the car. there was a smell of burning in the engine. the dealer reported the smoke was coming from under the hood of the air compressor clutch coil is internal short cause burning smoke. they recommended replacing the air compressor. ford said my car is not included in their recall list. *tr

I was ~350 miles from home in n. minnesota on 2/7/2013 and was accelerating from ~30 mph to 55 mph when the vehicle started to shake violently and loose power. a default message appeared on driver's information display followed by an ok message. the vehicle continued to shake and would not accelerate past ~5mph. i pulled into a local business parking lot and turned off the engine. i then added a bottle of gas line antifreeze believing there was a fuel problem since the outdoor temperature was extremely cold (-20 f to ?? 30f) and i had refuel ~75 miles before. after the addition of a bottle of fuel line antifreeze i immediately started the engine. i proceeded to the local ford dealer to have the vehicle checked out. the technician could not find an error code. the vehicle performed normally until the problem reappeared march 30th at ~ 19,500 miles (again in n. mn). a default message re-appeared on driver's information display followed by an ok message. after pulling over on the shoulder of the road, i shut off the engine and immediately restarted it. the engine has performed as normal since the second incident. after return to my home i reported the problem to the local ford dealership. the dealer maintenance department consulted with ford motor company for a service recommendation. the vehicle was serviced on 3/9/2014 per ford's recommendation at ~ 20,000. again there was no error message stored on the vehicles computer. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that while slowly moving forward, the vehicle suddenly accelerated without warning as the brake pedal was being depressed. the contact crashed into a house. the front and knee air bags deployed. the contact suffered injuries to the left leg, knee and chest. a police report was not filed. the vehicle was not inspected to determine the cause of the failure, nor repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure and current mileage was 7,092.

2013 ford escape. consumer writes in regards to "engine fault- service now" warning appeared on the dash when starting vehicle. consumer states vehicle stalled and lost all power. *smd the consumer stated the first engine fault light happened in october 2013. he turned the engine off and re-started it again, and the light didn't come back on. the second fault occurrence as he was leaving the house in mid-february. the vehicle moved very sluggishly and didn't appear to be getting any power. on march 15, 2014, the vehicle stalled and lost all power. the only message that displayed said to put the vehicle in park. fortunately, the vehicle started again. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but a diagnostic test didn't reveal any problems. the dealer kept the vehicle for 2 weeks, with no success in finding a problem. the next morning, the engine fault service no error message appeared on the dash. when his wife attempted to drive away, the vehicle accelerated sharply and took off down the road at a high rate of speed, leaving her with no control of the acceleration or speed of the vehicle. she applied the brakes, and the vehicle stopped. the consumer drove the vehicle to the dealer, and on the way there, it repeatedly sputtered and then it suddenly accelerated and lunged forward all the way to dealer. even the engine fault code displayed on the dash, the mechanic was unable to get an error code on the computer. the mechanic test drove the vehicle with the consumer, and it was then the vehicle exhibited everything the consumer was referring to. when they returned, the mechanic, hooked the computer back to the vehicle, and an error showed a harness issue, which was related to a wire splicing into two wires, which somehow became tangled during assembly. *jb

The auto stalls randomly on occasion. i feel this is a dangerous situation, however, the dealer can't get a code so ford will not fix. ford clearly knows this is a throttle problem with many of their vehicles, and as i understand, it has been investigated for a recall several times. how can i get them to fix it? *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving 69 mph with the cruise control activated, the gears would not engage, causing the vehicle to lunge forward. the contact mentioned that once the gears had engaged, the vehicle would jerk in reverse. the vehicle was taken to the dealer however, the technician was unable to duplicate the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 15,000 and the current mileage was 15,700. updated 12/04/13*lj updated 12/9/2013 *js
