Problems with 2013 Ford Escape POWER TRAIN

On average, the 2013 Ford Escape starts to “feel” problems with the POWER TRAIN and its various aspects after 63 685 miles.

Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2013 Ford Escape

My 2013 ford escape sel 1.6l with ecoboost is having the same coolant issues as many similar models have been having. however, my car's vin number was not included in the official recall so i have to foot the bill despite it clearly being the exact instance in which the recall was issued. for a clarification of the issue. the coolant is rapidly depleting despite no visible leaks or smells of it burning off, indicating that it's leaking into the engine (fire hazard as its a potential to ignite) caused in part by faulty hosing equipment. when the coolant levels get too low, the check engine light comes on and an immediate alert that the engine is overheating... even though the temperature remains unchanged. the car then begins to stall until the coolant levels are returned to normal.

I believe there is an inherent problem with ford transmissions. my 2013 escape began having problems at approx 100k. i also have family with ford transmissions issues. same skipping problem. my cousins has had to be repaired twice, once under 100k. and now just over 100k. i contacted ford and was given the run around for several weeks. then was told they would provide minimal financial support if i replaced my transmissions. i had also purchased the extended warranty that had expired at 100k. i took the car in at 106k. fords cost was still 1000s above any other transmission shop. i will not purchase a ford again

The engine will stall while driving. it has been doing it after being off for 0-60 minutes. i won't be able to accelerate and then the car starts shaking and shuts down.

Less that 85,000 and transmission is slipping. mechanic reports that he sees at least 1 escape or explorer a month with transmission issues. slippage happens at low speeds and during highway travel.

At 60,900 miles the transmission went out. no warning signs, no engine lights, just lost power and during driving and pulled over put in park and then engine just revved and wouldn't go. took to ford dealer and diagnosed as needing a new transmission just 900 miles over warranty. contacted many channels within dealer and ford but know one would help had to pay $4500.00 out of pocket to get rebuilt at the ford dealer. now with 37,000 miles the transmission has failed again and the dealer will do nothing, ford will do nothing and they say i need another transmission at the amount of $4500.00 again. same symptoms this time, no warning just failed. this to me is crazy i have to be on my 3rd transmission with a vehicle that has 99k miles. there is obviously and issue with these transmissions as the internet is full of complaints with this exact issues. also the many transmission shops i have spoke to have said them same thing, lots if issues and very common to fail early.

I purchased my escape with 50,000 miles on it, within a few months i had a low coolant alert- i was told at the dealership they did not replace the cap correctly after an oil change, they flushed the lines and couldn't find any leaks so the cap was replaced. i had a low coolant warning again and my coolant was replaced at home, and then another warning shortly after, again replaced, coolant clearly leaking from under car but no leaks could be identified. then... driving on the highway at 70mph "transmission fault" warning- pulled over. car was shifting normally, restarted and the warning was gone. took to dealership and was told they pulled the code: "for tcc judder, which is because the torque converter is slipping under any load, and there is a hard shift between 2nd and 3rd gears." was told i needed a transmission overhaul (car has 64,000 at this point.) brought the car home and in the driveway it started leaking transmission fluid. opened a case with ford and was told they "decline assistance" to help with repairs. brought to 2nd shop for 2nd opinion and was told: transmission fluid was completely burnt, transmission overheated at some point, this caused the cooling tank to crack explaining the disappearing coolant problem i had been having since buying the car, no explanation why the transmission would over heat. car serviced at ford regularly and was not heavily driven. i have had the car for 10 months at this point and will be paying thousands for a new transmission that failed with low mileage.

My car will stop while i am driving it.. the engine light goes on the car shakes and the light flash... this is dangerous.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that the vehicle's gear shifter failed to change into any gear. the contact had to maneuver the gear shifter to ensure that the gears properly changed over. in addition, the engine coolant indicator kept randomly flashing and coolant leaked from the vehicle. the coolant had to be constantly checked due to being low or nearly empty. the vehicle was taken to king ford (9555 kings auto mall rd, cincinnati, oh 45249, 513-683-0220), but was not yet diagnosed or repaired. the vehicle was excluded from nhtsa campaign number: 12v551000 (engine and engine cooling). the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the failure mileage was not available.

After pulling into a parking lot and putting my 2013 ford escape in park, the car continued to move forward. prior to having this occuring, when i pulled into a parking spot with the car in drive position, when i put the car in reverse to backup, the car gave a hard jerk before the car actually moved backward. since this has occurred, the car has a hard jerk before able to backup about every 3 times i put the car in reverse.

02/03/2019 i purchased the car 12/31/2018. these things occurred in the vehicle when it was stationary, taking off and excelling, in motion, on a city street and on a highway (interstate), driving straight, turning, braking, and on inclines and down hill. it also involves fuel/propulsion, engine, speed control, suspension, wheels. it started with the dash lighting up with no key in it. then it started a hard idle almost shutting down the vehicle. since i had it in last week, there is rattling, popping, grinding sounds with grabbing and pulling under the back of the car. now it is the traction and intelligence control all wheel warnings and shutting down the control on its own. it stalls in traffic while the computer attempts corrections that fail to correct it. it has slid from one side of an off ramp to the other side, because the traction/all wheel intelligence could not get traction. i could not control the car. grateful there was no one in the other lane. it is putting my life and everyone around me in serious danger of being killed. i have mentioned some of the issues prior to the last service on it and taken it to (purchased from) jarrett gordon ford winter haven, fl and (work done at) jarrett scott ford plant city, fl. i am told they can't diagnosis it unless it is doing this with them. i will be taking it back in tomorrow with all the new issues going on with it. it is seriously dangerous and getting progressively worse. i've already had the oil changed, transmission fluid drained and refilled, fuel induction, injector serviced (it did not help with fuel consumption), tune-up, plugs changed (did not help), coolant flush. this needs to be addressed before i die or any others die as a result of this vehicles issues. these liability issues belong to ford company, not me. all this since i purchased it 12/31/2018 proof of contacting 6 + members of the dealerships. *tr

A quick internet search reveals that this is a well documented problem in several different forums, yet ford has not taken any steps to ensure the safety of its customers. my car, in a fashion identical to the 140,000 escapes with the 2.0l engines, stalls suddenly while driving. it does this randomly, repeatedly, and without warning. i've been fortunate so far and have had the stalling occur only in low speed situations but i understand that other owners have stalled at high speeds. my car is a 1.6l and was not included in the recall. i've had the power control module replaced but that has not resolved the problem. how many more accidents are required before all vehicles will be fixed? the check engine light does not consistently illuminate preventing dealers from pulling the error codes and safely and efficiently resolving the problem. this is incredibly frustrating given the danger of the situation and the extensive documentation on the internet and the existence and correction of an identical problem in 140,000 other vehicles. it's unclear why the owners of 1.6l engines, which clearly suffer the same flaws and risks, are subject to severe injury, immense frustration, unresolved issues and escalating costs to drive what was supposed to be a reliable, safe family vehicle.

While driving, my can stalled out, then upon exiting onto a highway the car would not accelerate. took it in to get it looked at and nothing was found to cause my car to not accelerate. i took the vehicle home and within 3 weeks my car, again while driving stalled out and completely shut off while driving. this was scary because i was on a major highway during rush hour traffic. this car has been a complete nightmare and i have only had it for a little over a year. this repair is going to cost me over $1,100 to fix. i would like to know how ford is going to fix this as it seems to be a issue for many ford owners and there is an open investigation going on for this exact same problem.

Antifreeze is disappearing with no leaks visible or shown.

Driving to work one morning in a 40 mph zone, about 1.5 miles, warning lights appeared and stated that the vehicle was overheating and to pull over safely. the temperature gauge had shot up to h for hot. the vehicle immediately slowed down, regardless of pressing the gas. i was able to pull off of a us highway and find a safe place to park just a short distance. the vehicle needed to be towed to the dealer.

Vehicle was attempting to merge onto a freeway, speeding up, and the vehicle stopped accelerating at a normal rate of speed around 30 mph. it took an unacceptable amount of time for it to get up to a safe merging speed, but i could have died trying to merge. there is something wrong with the design of the power train on this car.

I noticed the low coolant light on i added coolant and it leaked out not a week later i see that this is a common problem with the vehicle but the dealership stated that there is no recall on it! im so confused and annoyed at the same time what can i do!!!!

I am contacting you regarding my 2013 ford escape, vin: [xxx]. while i was driving the transmission completely stopped working, almost causing an accident and also causing me to be stranded in another state. i eventually had the car towed back to valvoline in north reading, ma where the transmission had been flushed less than a week beforehand. they had the car taken to aamco who determined the transmission had failed. the car only has 39,200 miles on it and now needs a transmission replacement. i was told my ford to contact you to report this problem. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

I was at a stoplight and my vehicle stalled and suddenly died when trying to accelerate. after turning the vehicle off, it would work normally, and do this sporadically. very dangerous situation.

While in park vehicle move backward while getting out of door. door hit me jump back in set parking brake.vehicle wont srart had to get tow to nearest ford dealer..ford had a recall on 2013 escape-2016 escape but my vin no# wasnt include in the recall.

When driving this vehicle, it ser me like it is not running right, and think it is going to die on us in traffic. the front seat belt does not go back in the area where it belongs and sits on the front seat. the passenger driver side door does not close right when you open it. it will stay open until you push the handle down and then it will close and lock. we are afraid to travel long distance with the vehicle because of the way the car acts and run. we just want it fix or replace vehicle.

Stalls randomly at low rpm, seemingly it's same exact symptoms as recall 14s17 which was for the larger 2.0 motor. vehicle hesitates and stalls and wont start easily. this happened on four separate occasions over 6month period. vehicle only has 50,000 miles

Car had problems shifting. transfer case was replaced. after about 3 months, the car had problems shifting again. a transmission failure warning came on the screen and the car wouldn't shift. the shifting problem occurred coming out of park and then between 2 and 3 gear. then, the transmission would not past 3rd or 4th gear. the transmission failure warning came on while the car was in motion on the highway while going 50mph. i was approximately 20 miles from home and almost didn't make it.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle stalled and would not accelerate when the accelerator pedal was depressed. the vehicle was coasted onto the road shoulder. the vehicle was able to be driven home after it was restarted several times. the dealer and manufacturer had not been contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 136,000.

Starting in may 2018, coolant light came on, i replaced fluid. since then it has become a constant. i took it to 2 dealers they say nothing is wrong. i out a large cardboard under car & the leakage is very obvious. i put almost a gallon of coolant in vehicle in one month. got in touch with ford, they said contact you & go to another ford dealer for another inspection of leak. ford also said there is no recall for this model but other models of 2013 & 2014 have this problem & they are the same type of car.

Vehicle would display "high temperature, please stop" and temperature gauge would rise to the top within a couple of hours of driving. after displaying message, engine would lose power and vehicle became hard to control. this issue happened on different driving conditions. coolant levels are at correct level. after shouting down the engine, within a few seconds the temperature gauge would go back to the middle. this became more frequent, and as of december 6, 2018 the vehicle would not start without this message and the temperature gauge all the way to the top.

Car started and i backed out of my driveway where it then stopped. i coasted to the side of the road and started the car back up, and it started normally. i drove to get my oil changed where they also filled up all my fluids. the next day my car shuddered when it started but still was able to run. 2 days later my car would not start and the low level coolant indicator came on. 30 mins later my car was able to start but my coolant level is low.

Hose clamp rubbed hole in ac line was repaired at dealership and is doing it again. car is leaking coolant after being tested at dealership car keeps leaking coolant have to keep putting coolant in car every other day no leak is being seem recalls have been done for this issue but my car was not included. i was driving the car then the car started to shake and said low coolant then the car just died in the middle or the road 4 days after getting car tested and coolant added to the car. one of the hose clams rubbed a hole in this ac line than i started having coolant problems replaced ac line at dealership for it to be rubbing hole in line again. car is currently at dealership again.

Entering the highway i speed up to merge with traffic. i get to about 45 mph and loose acceleration power. with the engine still running but having no acceleration a strong thud happened. seemed like the gears finally caught...but still no acceleration and then the engine immediately revved to almost 8000 rpm...and still no acceleration. i managed to get over to the shoulder and turned it off. this has happened two other times (one time it also stalled completely). each time there is nothing that the dealer can tell me. it seems to "remedy" itself after each paid scan. the vehicle scan doesn't show anything. i'm very tired of paying for scans that show nothing. i feel very unsafe in my own car.

Parked the vehicle in my driveway. vehicle was in park when i turned the ignition off. vehicle began rolling backwards as i was attempting to leave the vehicle. vehicle rolled backwards into a tree damaging the liftgate, rear bumper and exhaust components. the ford recall for this issue covered ford escape 2013 models manufactured in their louisville, ky plant between may 2013 and september 2013. my ford escape was built in april 2013. i am curious as to what changed in the manufacturing process between april and may that would exclude my vehicle from the recall.

2013 ford escape, stalling, loosing power dash lighting up while driving. dealer service dept can find nothing wrong.

Transmission failed at a stop light on a two lane road.

The transmission will perform a "hard" shift in and out of gears (mainly between third and fifth gear) randomly. the prnd indicators on the instrument cluster will flash sporadically when this occurs. there have been several instances when the car has slipped into neutral (especially on the highway at high speeds) when this occurs. i have also had an issue when the car is placed in reverse. it will slip in and out of gear and the back up camera will flash. i have taken it to several dealers and mechanics, and no one has been able to diagnose the issue. i am being told that no diagnosis codes appear in the on board computer. i am left driving an unsafe, unreliable car without any hope of a fix.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that the transmission would not immediately shift into reverse after pushing the reverse selector button. the failure was also present when selecting the drive gear. in addition, when depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle would not immediately respond; however, the rpms continued to increase and the vehicle suddenly accelerated at a higher rate of speed. the failures were not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer and local dealer (doan ford, 66870 belmont morristown rd., belmont, oh) were notified of the failures. the failure mileage was 87,500.

1. mis-firing causing the entire vehicle to rock, seen mainly when the engine is in gear with the break engaged at a stop signal. 2. sudden over-revving seen on the tachometer. 3. the over-revving usually precedes the engine temperature spiking into the critical area. this is most likely to happen on inclines. pulling over, shutting down the engine allowing it to cool down for 10-15 minutes, then everything is fine. i have learned to watch for the over-revving, then apply the brake to stop the over-revving. then has allowed me to keep the over-heating in check.

Pop-up messages on console: "transmission fault. service now. reducing power to reduce engine temperature." although there was not a perceptible difference in driving, i took my vehicle to service immediately. results from dealer service advisor: "it appears the torque converter is slipping inside the transmission, the trans over temp light is coming on as a result of the converter slipping, so ultimately it will need the transmission rebuilt with the torque converter replaced. i know you are just outside of warranty and the repair is quite unexpected and costly. ford has replied back and stated they will assist $1,569.12, which would leave you responsible for $1,000.00 toward the repair."

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. when the contact shifted the vehicle into reverse, the engine stalled. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 18v471000 (power train); however, the parts to do the recall repair were not available. the contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the shifter cable was fractured, but the vehicle was not repaired. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 44,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while reversing at unknown speeds, the gear shifter became stuck in the drive position; however, the vehicle continued to move in reverse. the brake pedal was applied, but failed to stop the vehicle. the emergency brake was engaged to stop the vehicle. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was towed to san tan ford (1429 e motorplex loop, gilbert, az 85297, (480) 821-3200) where it was diagnosed that the shifter cable fractured and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was approximately 71,000.

On wed august 22nd, 2018, i was running errands. i left a store, entered my 2013 ford escape titanium, and began to slowly back out of my parking space. after backing out of the space, i put the shifter into d and began to try to drive forward, but my vehicle instead continued to roll backwards. i immediately pressed my brake pedal, which stopped it from rolling backwards, and put the shifter into p. though my vehicle showed that it was in park, it continued to roll backwards if i took my foot off the brake. i was able to reverse my car down the parking lot and back into a parking space at the end of the lot. all the while, my 2013 escape showed that it was in park. i turned my vehicle off, but had to engage the emergency brake to ensure that it would not continue rolling backwards. when i tried to turn the vehicle back on a minute later, i was not able to push the brake pedal down. it became locked, and i couldn't turn the engine on, shift, or do anything except turn press the ignition button to turn on/off the radio/ac/lights/electrical, etc. (during this whole time, there was never any warning lights lit or any indication at all that a problem was about to occur or currently occuring.) i had it towed to the nearest ford dealership, where they confirmed that it was the shifter assembly/cable that broke, which is the exact issue in the recall ford issued on over 500,000 2013 ford escapes in july 2018. however, despite my vehicle having the exact mechanical failure as described in the recall notice, i was told by ford when i contacted the manufacturer directly, that my vehicle was assembled at a plant that has not been added to the recall. obviously this issue is more vast and widespread than ford is willing to admit. because my escape is from a factory that hasn't been added to the recall yet, ford refuses to cover the cost of repairs. this is incredibly frustrating.

When i press on the brake, when setting in traffic some time the car it jump forward instead of stopping it feel like some body hit you from the back. last week i felt a stronger jump when i was in traffic. the following day when i tried to drive the car did not move but when i hit the gas light it click and moved. is this the same problem for the last recall

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while pulling into a parking space, the gear was shifted into park, but remained in drive. the contact stated that the instrument panel showed that the gear was in park. the failure caused the vehicle to move forward. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the contact applied the emergency brake in order to stop the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who readjusted the bushing cable, but the failure recurred. the contact called lindsay ford at 888-457-7005 (located at 11250 veirs mill rd, wheaton, md 20902) and was informed that the part was not available for nhtsa campaign number: 18v471000 (power train). the contact received the recall notice two days later. the manufacturer was notified and was not able to confirm when the parts would become available. the contact was not provided a loaner vehicle and the failure was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 96,000. vin tool confirms parts not available.

The vehicle is a 2013 with less than 48k miles on it. the problem started with rolling backwards when starting from a stop on a hill and with a hesitation then a slight jerk when starting from a stop. that happened off and on one day then cleared up for about a month. when it started again it would also have sluggish acceleration like it had a shifted into a gear that was too high, or would wind up like it had shifted into neutral. again, it was intermittent like it was a loose wire or bad circuit. then it started intermittently making a kind of a grinding noise and shortly after there was a loud noise and the transmission was toast.

2013 ford escape. consumer writes in regard to malfunction with vehicles transmission. *as the consumer stated that the transmission needed to be replaced and was advised the warranty had expired. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 18v471000 (power train). the contact stated that the vehicle was unable to shift out of park into any other gear, which left the contact stranded for hours. a loaner vehicle was provided by mcgrath ford (4001 1st ave se, cedar rapids, ia 52402, (319) 366-4000, 319-364-0181) as of august 27, 2018. the dealer stated that the parts were unavailable for the repair. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence and had not been repaired. the failure mileage was not available. vin tool confirms parts not available.

131,000 miles transmission started slipping and as of 7/15/2018 transmission is gone this seems to be very common with the 1.6 liter engine i had taken it in when it started to slip and ford dealer ship started they could not find anything wrong with it until warranty was up and transmission is completely out now i'm stuck with a loan and a vehicle i cannot drive very disappointed with ford i wish i would have known they changed the motor and tranny 3 times in 2013 very dissatisfied should be a recall on these transmissions

When driving on a highway the vehicle suddenly slowed down and the throttle did not work. i pulled off, shut the engine and restarted the car. it then ran ok. the same thing happened 2 other times - as if the gas pedal did not work. i saw on internet that escapes has a history of throttle problems, including my year. i took it to the ford dealer in columbia mo and they said , based on the vin #, that my car was supposedly not affected by this throttle issue. they said they could do nothing but charge me to replace the electronic throttle control. this is wrong. i could get seriously injured if this happens again but ford takes no responsibilty for a known problem.

My kids and i were in the drive thru at schlotzky's when i put my car in 'park' to order. once my order was complete and i was ready to pull forward, i went to put my car in 'drive' and the gear stick was moving freely but not shifting the gears for my car to move. a team member from the restaurant came out to give me a hand to find that my shifter cable was disconnected. he then told me to use the emergency brake to park my car so it would park and not continue in motion when i wanted to park. we then took it to mieneke where the car previously was for a transmission replacement. they said that my shifter cable had gone bad. now my gear stick gets stuck with trying to shift gears.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while accelerating to merge onto a highway, the vehicle sputtered and hesitated. the vehicle then accelerated, the rpms increased, the vehicle jerked uncontrollably, and the check engine indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to van horn ford of oconomowoc (1000 summit ave, oconomowoc, wi 53066, (262) 567-5574). the dealer checked the transmission's computer code, but could not determine the cause of the failure. the dealer stated that they would have to see the check engine indicator illuminate to perform a diagnostic test. the manufacturer was contacted and stated that a supervisor would call back. the manufacturer stated that there was no recall on the vehicle; therefore, the contact would be responsible for the repair costs. the contact stated that the failure recurred several times while the warranty was still in effect and the dealer was notified several times. the manufacturer stated that they could not assist since the warranty was currently expired. the failure mileage was 94,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. after shifting into the park position, the display indicated that the transmission was in drive. the contact stated that the vehicle would no longer operate in either direction. the vehicle was towed to willis ford(15 north dupont blvd, smyrna, de) where it was diagnosed that the transmission bushing that connected the shift cable was faulty and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 153,000. *tt consumer states vehicle was turned off and attempted to turn it back on, nonetheless it would not turn over as the vehicle was still registering that it wa "on" and in reverse. vehicle was repaired but was not included in the recall. Ours is a 2013 ford escape with only 37,000 miles on the odometer. it's hardly been driven for a six year old car and has been well maintained according to the manufacturer's recommendation.upon starting the car in the drive mode, there was a pronounced "clunk" sound from below the cabin section of the car. the car would begin moving forward and then shift into neutral. this situation continued for about 1/10 of a mile. while turning around to return home, the same thing happened in the reverse mode. the car had to be towed to the dealer as it appeared to be unsafe to drive on a highway. the diagnosis was clutch and transmission failure. cost to repair $4,300.00. seems to me that there has to be a basic defect in the product having read so many of the other complaints on this site. additionally and in retrospect, the engine would begin racing to a high rpm in the park mode without a foot on the accelerator. this was a disturbing phenomenon.

Purchased new in 2013 - 43,000 miles currently. four episodes of a jerking motion between speeds of 0 to 45 in 5 years. i purchased 5 yr and 100,000 mile warrenty. the time ran out 2 months ago. this transmission has a s feature and as it would stop the jerking when it was cut off and restarted it seemed to be a computer problem. it happened about once a year and always "reset" when turned off. i wondered if there was a silent recall or other people who have had this experience. i have always been driving when this occurs and it is random....leaving a stop, open road stop and go. i actually called ford the first time it happened and they were sending a tow truck. the vehicle had been parked overnight and i thought to turn it around in the driveway so it would go on the truck forward. drove down street to turn around and nothing....cancelled the tow. nothing like it for another year??? i feel this may be a problem with the "s" (sport shift) feature. i have never used this feature at all...at age 75, i am over that. my vehicle has been service twice a year since purchase. the manual says change transmission fluid at 150,000 miles. the sudden and violent jerking while in traffic is terrifying to say the least and although there has not been an accident, i am certainly nervous about the function of the vehicle.
