Problems with 2013 Ford Escape POWER TRAIN

On average, the 2013 Ford Escape starts to “feel” problems with the POWER TRAIN and its various aspects after 63 685 miles.

Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2013 Ford Escape

We bought 2013 ford escape in july, 2016, with approximately 62,000 miles. at 64,000 miles, after constant overheating issues, ford agreed to replace the engine. there were overheating issues on the new engine at time of install (stated in dealer notes), but they "fixed" them. the car now has 103,000 miles. has been serviced regularly, with occasional overheating issues noted. transmission failed last month. waited over 2 weeks for diagnosis. transmission needs to be replaced and another new engine is needed because of coolant leak. our extended warranty expired at 100,000 miles. contacted ford customer service and they refuse to do anything to help. it seems that they put another defective engine in at 64,000 miles because you should get more that 40,000 miles on a new engine. the cost to repair this piece of junk is prohibitive and i feel very unhappy with ford's response.

2013 ford escape experiences apparent transmission failures at highway speeds. often during passing acceleration. repeated instances. from 50k miles to 70k miles. one instance involving all wheels locking up at 80mph (felt like a shift into park) and the others involving drivetrain power loss and jerking. after car restart, codes "apparently" disappear and dealers are unable to identify any issues without codes.

The car will run for about a minute and then want to stall. also when you start it it will drive for about 20 yards and then start idling very weird and stall. it doesn't do this all the time. it's dangerous.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. when the gear was shifted into park, the vehicle went into neutral. the contact had assistance with placing the gear in drive and took the vehicle to an independent mechanic. the mechanic released the gear shifter lever in order to drive; however, the gear could not be shifted into reverse or park. the contact also had to charge the battery. the contact was concerned that the battery had to be charged again due to the gear shifter not engaging into park or reverse. the contact spoke with an unknown dealer and was informed that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 18v471000 (power train). the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 56,826.

Tl* the contact's daughter owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that while his daughter was driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning. the driver was able to restart the vehicle and the vehicle operated as intended. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. the driver was informed that the belts and clutches in the transmission were slipping which caused the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. neither a dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 104,529.

The car suddenly stalls while driving for many times. the kings ford dealer couldn't fix the problem. it is a very dangerous problem.

While driving down highway 82, a fire started in the engine compartment, there was no notice of a fire within the cab. no smell and no visible smoke. after being flagged down about it, we managed to get out of the car and save just a few things out of the car, before the front half of the vehicle became engulfed in flames.

The torque converter on my 2013 ford escape started to thump when shifted into drive after initial start-ups. the problem began somewhere around 86000+ miles. there would be no subsequent problems when taking the vehicle out of drive (i.e., after backing up or being placed into park) once the vehicle was running a while (heated up). vehicle now has 87000+ miles and on 11/07/19 i received a message "transmission fault. service now." i put the car in drive and the message disappeared. on 11/08/19 i started the vehicle and shifted into drive. this time the transmission did not engage and was unable to move the vehicle forward. later in the evening i tried starting and shifting the escape into drive. the vehicle shifted into drive with the usual thump and i was able to move the suv forward. the torque converted appears to be on its way out. i plan to take it to a dealer for diagnosis. i want to report this as i understand that other who own similar vehicles (ford escapes) are also experiencing problems with their torque converts and transmissions.

Purchased the vehicle with around 74k miles, 3 months later, during winter, the car began to stall regularly while accelerating, basically going into "limp mode" as ford describes it, claiming the vehicle is overheating....while at normal operating temperature. after turning the car off and on, the issue goes away but check engine remains for 3 days until it clears itself. 3 trips to ford service center, over $2500 in repairs, and no resolution. now a field engineer from ford instructed the dealer how to diagnose with possible resolution, but still no certainty, and request vehicle for 3-4 days of diagnoses and no loaner vehicles, only out of pocket rentals offered @ $30 a day. 1st and last time i drive, rent, lease or purchase a ford vehicle. service was done at fair price, friendly service staff, but very inconvenient. last 3 incidents occured on the highway at 70mph and once of those incidents almost resulted in a collision, but ford doesn't seem too concerned. should this happen again, going from 70mph down to 55-45mph within 5 seconds is very dangerous and life threatening. i would not purchase this model vehicle unless life isn't a priority. being former military, it's sad my life is more in danger here than during my service. unacceptable, especially if it's a known issue but their own service center can't even repair it or at least offer a loaner during their attempts to do so. issue is very intermittent and random, no real pattern or trigger. last incident was yesterday, which would be the 7th time this month.

Car overheated while driving four times between 2016-2018 (after each instance, it was towed to and serviced at a ford dealer). car also experienced three instances of exhaust leaks between 2016-2018 (each instance was identified by a strong smell of gas and serviced at a ford dealer). in october 2019, the transmission failed while attempting to merge on the highway, requiring a tow to the ford dealer, who recommended a complete transmission replacement at 105,000 miles.

I just bought this vehicle used in april and i'm already hearing loud noises when i start the car and grinding noises when i accelerate. i took the vehicle to a mechanic who confirmed that the way this vehicle was manufactured, caused a leak that was dripping fluid and causing softening of the gears? he said is would eventually lead to overheating. i am now experiencing unexpected accelerations while driving and difficult breaking.

The vehicle stutters and dies upon restart; after being heat soaked from a long drive (highway for a hour). vehicle throws random codes related to pcm does not do so consistently. appears to be a problem with wires related to pcm

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. when the contact attempted to park the vehicle, the gear shifter failed and remained in neutral. the contact was unable to release the shifter out of neutral. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the gear shifter cable failed. the shifter cable was replaced. the contact also advised that the battery had to be replaced because the navigation screen remained on due to the gear failure. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer. the manufacturer was contacted. the vehicle was repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 122,000.

This has been an issue over the past three months. the latest was yesterday (24 september 2019). the issue occurs once the vehicle has been started, the engine/transmission seems to stutter and will shut down. shutting the engine off, will re-start and it has the same issue. sometimes, it occurs after i have driven 100 feet (or less) and i have to pull over, shut the car down, or it shuts down, and then restart. this might happen 2-3 times before the vehicle seems to drive okay. this condition seems to be getting worse. sometimes, i have to turn the ac off prior to restarting the car.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. when the vehicle was placed in park, it rolled backwards. the instrument panel displayed that the gear was in reverse. the vehicle was taken to matthews ford (918-251-3673, located at 1101 w southwest expressway dr, broken arrow, ok 74012) where it was stated that the vin was not included in a recall. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. the contact was referred to nhtsa. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 99,355.

The bushing on my 2013 ford escape has gone out. i am unable to shift my vehicle into park or reverse. it will only go into drive and neutral. i am not able to go anywhere that i may need to reverse. when i start my car and park it the car has to be in neutral and i have to use the emergency brake. their are other 2013 ford escapes with this issue but they are saying my vin is not one of them. obviously mine also is having an issue with the same problem. it happened when i was coming down a hill getting ready to pull into a friends driveway and park. it would not leave d and when it did it would only go into d or n.

I was driving home from work and without no warning signs when i went to go at a green light it just didn't want to go and was making a whining noise. had to have it towed. have gotten 3 different technicians from 3 different places and said that the transmission needs replaced. i have been doing a lot of research and have found that ford has had transmission problems from around 2010-2016. why has there not been a recall, especially since the repair cost is $4000-$6000.

I just purchased my vehicle almost 2 years ago. the vehicle has had stalling and acceleration issues since then. i took it back to the dealer and they stated that they didn't find a problem only in the joints of my wheel bearings. two weeks later. i was driving on the highway and it felt like someone hit my car. when i looked back there was nobody behind me. i pulled over to check my vehicle out. when i got back in my car. it was hard to shift my gears. i tried to drive off but my car wouldn't move no faster than 5 miles per hour with me pushing the acceleration pedal to the ground. i almost got hit by a semi truck. i found out from a mechanic that it was my transmission. no warranty is available. my car is just sitting in my garage and now i'm catching the bus while paying a car note. please help. i don't have 2500 to fix this. it's too many recalls on this site about the same problem. please help us.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that the shifter lever cable bushing detached from the vehicle, preventing the vehicle from being placed into park. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the contact associated the failure with nhtsa campaign number: 18v471000 (power train). the contact called groove ford (10039 e arapahoe rd, centennial, co 80112, 720-523-9154) and was informed that an entirely new shifter lever cable was needed. the contact also spoke with larry h. miller ford lakewood (11595 6th ave, lakewood, co 80215, 720-643-1545) and was informed to call the manufacturer to dispute the recall. the manufacturer was notified of the matter and referred the contact to nhtsa. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 84,000.

Issue 1: transmission problems at 70,000 miles. driving on the highway at 70mph and the transmission died causing me the loose power in the middle of the highway. too the car to the dealer and they mentioned it's a known problem. issue 2: lug nut stainless steal caps get hot and molds itself to the lug nut under it. there is not tool remove the caps and they have to be stripped off to get to the lug nuts to remove the tire. the caps cannot be stripped of completely and to get a net set of lug nuts cost $250.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. when the contact shifted into drive and released the brake pedal, the vehicle drove in reverse. the contact depressed the brake pedal and applied the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. in addition, the gear shift indicator showed that the vehicle was in reverse; however, the gear shift was in drive. the contact noticed that the cable connected to the transmission lever to the gears was not connected. the contact mentioned that the transmission lever was moved manually in order to place the vehicle in the correct gear and operate it correctly. the contact called winner ford (591 s dupont hwy, dover, de 19901, (302) 877-2489) and was informed that there were no recalls. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 18v471000 (power train). the approximate failure mileage was 200,000.

Driving down the freeway, started to accelerate in sport mode, heard something pop. sounded like the clutch slipped or a belt broke. lost most acceleration. got off freeway to take side streets home. had a lot of trouble accelerating up hill. would accelerate but very slowly. not on pace with gears. was shifting weird. both in d and s. took me about 4 blocks to get from 0 to 25mph.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. after backing up the vehicle, the contact was not able to shift the gear into drive or any other gear. the contact stated that the vehicle was not included in the unknown recall regarding the bushings. hempstead ford lincoln (301 n franklin st, hempstead, ny 11550, (516) 483-7200) was in the process of completing the repairs. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in a recall. the cause of the failure was not disclosed. the failure mileage was 43,000.

Mid-day, 91 degrees. car shuddered reversing out of the driveway. no previous problems. i waited and car idled well. i left the neighborhood and turned left into traffic on a five-lane road. i lost acceleration merging from the center turning lane. the vehicle revved, getting fuel, but there was no forward movement, no shuddering, nothing. i moved the vehicle into "sport" mode, in case i had bumped the selector, but it made no difference. traffic honked and swerved around me. i was able to get into the right lane with my hazard lights on. my car shuddered off, completely and i lost power steering just as i completed the maneuver. i restarted my vehicle and the vehicle shuddered to a side-street, where i idled for five minutes and called for assistance. assistance was going to take a long time and i suffer from a medical condition that makes me fragile in the heat. i tested the vehicle on the side streets and it performed. i was able to get the vehicle home slowly.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while shifting into park, the gear failed and was stuck in neutral. in addition, the vehicle failed to shut off. the vehicle was towed to frontier ford (3701 stevens creek blvd, santa clara, ca 95051, 408-241-1800), but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 18v471000 (power train). the approximate failure mileage was 109,000.

I was driving my family from houston, tx to san antonio,tx on july 5th 2019 for the holiday weekend in my 2013 ford escape sel with the 6f35 transmission. we were about 1 hour & 30 minutes into our trip, 108 miles, from our home near the city of flatonia, tx when our transmission horrifically failed. while i was driving i noticed the transmission had a made a hard shift into 6th gear. it had jumped a couple of times until i accelerated and then it finally shifted into 6th gear. the next sign of trouble was when the dash screen told us the lane change sensor was failing. next we started noticing a faint burning smell coming into the cabin, we weren't sure what it was. a minute later all the warning lights turned on in the dash screen. i immediately put on my turn signal so i could get to an exit and when trying to accelerate out of the way of traffic, i realized my ford escape was not responding to the acceleration pedal. it would not accelerate at all. so now i couldn't shift and my gas pedal was not functioning. i finally reached the nearest exit turned on my hazard lights and proceeded to coast into the nearest gas station since my gas pedal was not functioning. as soon as i stopped & turned off my suv, white smoke was coming from the engine bay. i quickly got my wife and 1 yr old daughter out of the suv and ran away from the vehicle. thankfully the smoke stopped and i opened the hood and saw transmission oil all over the top of the transmission. it was so hot it was boiling in the crevices where it had settled. this transmission is supposed to have "a special blend of transmission fluid maintenance free for the life of the gearbox." a couple days prior the transmission would jump erratically when shifting from 2-3 gear and from 5-6 gear even though it was an automatic transmission.but i had taken it to a ford dealer and they didn't help at all.

We was on a city street turning at a stoplight and got stuck and vehicle wouldn't move. had to accelerate to 5,000 rpms to get it to move and it slammed into 2nd gear. almost caused 2 car accidents with 2 different directions of traffic. there was no warning at all. bad transmission needs recalled

My car constantly stalls. it stalled periodically but i thought well maybe it's was because of how hot it was outside. but that it's the case. i can be at a light stopped, driving down the street/expressway and it'll start to lose stutter and stall out with only the battery light and oil lamp light coming on. sometimes itll start right back up others it has it sit and cool down. even tho my engine isn't reading hot or anything along those lines. everything reads fine. i've taken to multiple shops and finally just 5 days ago to a ford dealer who had my car for almost 3 days and all he could say is it looks like i could possibly have a cracked water pump! they need to do something for us with the 1.6 it seems to be the same exact thing going on with the 2.0. today when my car stalled my oil dipstick was smoking

Weared sound comes while starting engine, shakes while changing shifts,so if we drive for while it will change shifts shake and bump and stop accelerating and stock on the middle of the way

While driving on saturday, june 29, 2019, my car suddenly started hesitating when changing gears. the longer i drove, the more it shook, and accelerated but did not go into gear or move at all. eventually it went into gear and took off. i managed to reach my destination and let it sit for a while, the headed home. the longer i drove, all of the above happened again. i drove it very sparingly for the next week until i was able to get the money to have it repaired. it is currently in the shop. today i happened to come across this website and found multiple complaints from people experiencing the same problems. is anything being done to address this issue?

When on an incline or at low speeds like coming stop a stop light or sign, i push the gas pedal, the car revs up to 5 and 6 but barely moves. all of a sudden it will take off and jump into gear really harshly. at times it will slip out of gear and go super slow while in traffic. i feel like i may get hit at some point from behind. this happens coming from a stopped position, it happens at slow speeds, it slows down at 35/40mph, it happens while turning corners. i have not experienced it on the highway. it seems once i reach highway speeds it works properly. i have a transmission fault notification on the dashboard.

My car coolant is leaking, hoses are bad, engine gasket is leaking oil and my center console is faulty. and batteries are draining even brand new ones. i see there is a recall for fire risk coolant leak and my car qualifies but when i put my vin it dies not show. please help. also i got bushing gear shift problem earlier dealer said my manufacture date is different than recall date and charged me for it.

While driving when i stop the car began stalling. i would have to buy the car in park and start it. i would then have to put the car in neutral press on the gas and put the car in drive to be able to move. now when i start the car and put the car in gear (forward or reverse) the car stalls.

I start the car and nothing seams wrong it idles correctly and temperatures stay good. once i put the car on drive and go over 10mph i get the first warning that coolant is low. if i ignore tha and try to go above 15 mph i get a second warning for high engine temperature. after that the car stalls and it won't go back to normal until i park. turn off the car. restart. and it will stay normal until i start driving again.

Convertidor de transmisin daado

2013 ford escape. consumer writes in regard to transmission malfunction in vehicle. *as *js

I am the original owner and have had all maintenance performed at the dealership. for about a year my car has had an issue where it hesitates when i accelerate. the dealership would blow out the mass air flow then the car would run fine for 2 or 3 months then the problem would start over. on may 8 while driving in town it started hesitating when i would accelerate and the shifting progressively got rougher. then when trying to drive forward from a red light the engine would rev but the car would not move. the dealership says there is metal debris stopping up the filter and that it could be the clutches or some other part of my transmission coming apart. i'm told my transmission needs to be rebuilt.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while the vehicle was in reverse, it failed to shift out of gear. the contact had to move the gear shifter back and forth to shift out of reverse and into park. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing because it could not be driven. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. the approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

I have owned my 2013 escape for approx. 4.5 years. i bought it with approx. 40k miles and it is now at 80k. for the last 6 to 9 months it has been acting as though it will stall, the rpms will drop, the car will shudder then recover most of the time. it has actually shut off twice, once in a parking space while idling and the other at a stop light while idling. the places the stall issue seems to occur the most is at stop light, idling in parking spaces, sitting in drive throughs, etc. it has bucked several times while driving but has managed to recover without losing too much speed or without shutting off. i have taken it to several mechanics and dealerships, no one can find the reason for the "stalling". yesterday, when coming out of work in flat parking lot, instead of stalling the vehicle jerked once when i put it into drive and then there was no power when i pushed the gas to drive forward. the vehicle inched forward but did nothing else. i then put it in reverse and the same thing occurred. i turned off the vehicle, let it sit for about 5 minutes, restarted it and drove it without issue to the dealership. the dealership called me today and said the transmission needs work. i have yet to find out what this "work" entails but from reading all the entries, recalls, and investigations this sounds like the same issues other people are having with their escapes.

Cars transmission failed with only 33,000 miles on the car! i think there is an electrical problem with the car because the battery and the internal components failed at the same time! both times i was driving the car and moving forward when the car stalled out both times, the second time i had just left ford with the vehicle and they said it was fixed when it stalled out again in forward motion, this time i had the car towed back to ford and it's been sitting there since april 13th and today is may 1st and ford has not responded back to me to resolve the issues with the car? i had the car towed to a transmission place on 4/30/2019 that is only charging me $3,100 for a rebuilt transmission with a 2 year 24,000 mile warranty and ford wanted $7,400 to put a rebuilt transmission in the car? hmmmmm what would you do? customer service at ford is sloooooow to say the least? it's bad enough i've got a car with only 33,000 miles on it and with an internal transmission issue and than ford wants me to wait until when to respond back with a solution?

When the ford escapes from 50 to 60 miles it starts with a tremor in the front of the engine, the shaking does not feel in the guie

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving various speeds, the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was taken to golden circle ford lincoln, inc. (1432 us-45 byp, jackson, tn 38305, (731) 554-3673) where the contact was informed that there were no active recalls on the vehicle and that a diagnostic test needed to be performed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 105,000.

As i was driving down local roads my engine was making s sound as if a fan was running on high speed and i could feel the engine losing power. after about 2 miles a message appeared on the screen that said transmission failure. i pulled into a parking lot and had to have it towed. i had it towed to a local repair shop and was told it needed a new transmission.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving at low speeds, the vehicle sputtered and stalled. the contact had to turn off and restart the vehicle multiple times in order to drive. the contact stated that the same failure occurred while driving in reverse. the vehicle was taken to wall's ford (2 merrill st, salisbury, ma 01952) where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was contacted. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 123,000. the vin was unavailable.

I purchased the car with 60,000 miles i put 6,000 in 7 months and now my transmission is slipping. i was almost rear ended when it dropped out of nowhere. there are transmission recalls on similar fords.

Tl* the contact owned a 2013 ford escape. two minutes after the vehicle was parked in the driveway, the contact heard a loud crash. the contact went outside and noticed that the vehicle rolled down the driveway and crashed into a vehicle passing by. the contact was not in the vehicle at the time of the failure. the contact stated that the house was on a hill and the vehicle went into reverse independently. the air bags did not deploy. the occupant in the other vehicle was injured and received medical attention. a police report was filed. the vehicle was towed to a tow yard and deemed totaled by the contact's insurance company. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and provided a case number. the failure mileage was unknown.

Intermittent stalling of my 1.6 liter ecoboost engine. it happens every 3 to 4 days and only happens after you start the engine and drive about 100 feet. the engine will lose power and die. you start it back up and it will display loss of power and die again. normally the 3rd time the engine starts and runs properly. it will then not have any issues for 3-4 days. it is dangerous because it will normally have this problem after gong to the store and when leaving you pull out of parking lot and it will stall merging into traffic. it has never done this while traveling at speed limit.

Transmission slipping in forward and reverse when car starts up from stop on city road.

At 68,000 miles, the transmission went out on my escape. i was at a stop light and tried to accelerate when the light turned green. without 1st gear, the car wouldn't budge. i had to press the accelerator to the floor to go anywhere.

My transmission has totally failed at 105241 miles. in the past , the motor head blew with the overheating recall, and ford gave me a new eengine (despite saying new i found out it was remanufactured) at 45000 miles. the found coolant in the cylinders. it continued to have clouds of white smoke when first started up, after numerous times at dealer, they finally replaced the turbo at 86000. white smoke was still occurring but not as severe. it was towed to a local mechanic who said the transmission fluid was muddy, black. he felt they should have replaced the tranny with the motor damage. ford cus ser rep and supervisors do not know the criteria for inclusion in powertrain recall. they say it is not in the recall by the vin number. my car has the 6 sp auto tranny and the production date is included. they can't tell me why mine is not included.
