Problems with 2010 Ford Escape FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

On average, the 2010 Ford Escape starts to “feel” problems with the FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM and its various aspects after 61 712 miles.

Recently reported FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM problems on 2010 Ford Escape

While driving on the freeway, the engine cut out and spit and sputtered. vehicle restarted and went about a mile and did the same thing. at that point a tow truck was called and vehicle was towed to a service shop where the throttle body was replaced.

I was driving home with my five year old son when i noticed my vehicle seem to be running rough. first, i noticed a rough idle when i stopped at a stop light. then, while turning accross on coming traffic the vehicle looses all power with no throttle response and the engine light illuminated. at this point i was still in the way of on coming traffic and could not accelerate to finish the turn. thank god i did idle to safety. i then stopped on the side of the road and put the vehicle in park and observed a very rough idle and no throttle response at all. i shut off the vehicle and restarted it after thirty seconds and it ran normal again with the engine light off. i immediately took the vehicle to a parts store to have the the ecm scanned for trouble codes. the tech could not recover or read any codes at that time. i found that troubling at the time but found out later that not all scan tools can access stored codes. i had this occur twice the next day while driving to work. i then called my local ford dealer to schedule service and when i told him the symptoms he immediately knew the problem. i ordered a new throttle body assembly per their instruction and asked if there are any recalls or tsb's on this issue if it's that common. the dealer checked and found a tsb on this problem but no recalls. i personally feel this is definately a safety concern and should treated as that before someone does get hurt or worse, killed in an accident. i called ford customer service the next day to file a complaint and find out why they aren't being proactive with this serious issue. i was told that they have no known safety recalls or tsb's at this time. i was also told that this problem was not something they had encountered very often. since then, i have researched this and found that it is very known and being investigated at this time. thank you.

Driving the vehicle normally when suddenly lost all power (limp mode) the lady in the vehicle behind me almost hit me then she went off the road herself. i had to pull over i shut the engine off and went to check on the lady in the other vehicle and luckily her and her vehicle were fine, unfortunately i did not get her name or number. when i restarted the vehicle it operated normally, the throttle was responsive again. i drove about 3 more miles and it happened again as i was making a left hand turn. again shut the engine off and restarted again operated normally. i later took the vehicle to a local car parts store and had them check the codes. the codes they got were p2111 and p2112 throttle body stuck open, stuck closed respectively. i contacted a ford service center and they informed me that they can schedule service next week but they have so many of these bad that the parts are on back order. since this caused a near miss i felt compelled to report it as well as it seems to be a pretty sizable issue since the parts are difficult for ford to get. *tr

Car would occasionally lurch forward while driving, then on august 21st 2013, car lurched forward then felt like it stalled out. took it to ford dealership they stated that the throttle body went out and needed to be replaced. *tr

Driving on the highway at a maintained speed, my vehicle illuminated a maintenance light, and within seconds the gas pedal was not working. i was on a slight hill at the time so i still had some momentum, enough to pull over out of the traffic. the steering, brakes, and everything else were working fine, but nothing happened when i pressed the gas. when i put the car in park there was some stuttering, almost like it was stalling out, coming from under the hood. i turned the vehicle off and waited a few moments. when i turned it back on, it took an extra 2-3 seconds to start up, but seemed to be running fine, and i drove to work, then right to the dealer after work for repairs. they told me it was the electronic throttle body, and that it is now running fine since they replaced the throttle body, and i am going to pick it up after work today. *tr

Vehicle abruptly stalled with check engine light on, at highway speed. an accident was barely averted. car was taken to dealership and diagnosed as a faulty throttle body. the defective throttle body was replaced. vehicle only has 32k miles. research shows that this is a common problem. *tr

I bought vehicle 2010 ford escape in august of 2011. in february of 2011 i was driving down a city road going about 30 mph and my escape starting stalling out would not accelerate wrench light came on. i pulled into a parking lot and it was idling rough like it was going to stall out. i put my escape into park pushed slightly on gas pedal it made no difference with my foot on the brake i switched it into gear made no difference. i put car back into park and turned it off. waited a few minutes started it. it started right up with no problems. i ran fuel cleaner through it. i did not have anymore problems until thursday aug 15th 2013. i was driving down city road going about 30 mph it did the same thing again. started stalling out would not pick up acceleration running rough wrench light came on pulled into parking lot barley idling sputtering like it was going to stall i put car into park turned engine off waited a few minutes. turned back on. my car started fine ran fine like nothing happened again. so today 8/20/13 im going down busy traffic country two lane road no where to pull car off on side safely. and again all of a sudden going about 35 mph i loose acceleration car starts sputtering i cant accelerate running rough wrench light came on i coasted up to stop sign as i had nowhere to safely pull car off road and put car in park turn off engine started engine right back up car ran fine. this is a safety issue. i thought at first my fuel filter may be the problem but as im reading the 2010 ford escapes have a guaranteed lifetime fuel filter inside the fuel tank cannot replace it. so as i was reading more in depth i see a lot of people having the same problem as i am with their 2010 escapes. i now see the problem is a throttle body issue defect and an investigation is going on. ford needs to do something about this before people wind up in crashes over this. *tr

Cruising at 60mph. without warning, car slows, throttle unresponsive. engine warning light on. car did not stall, but would not respond to throttle. coast to side of road, dodging traffic. put car in park, restarted and everything was normal. as of oct 7, 2013 this has occurred five times. code reader picks up no codes from engine pcm. *tr

While driving at approx 65mph on freeway, the vehicle's throttle dropped to idle speed. the accelerator would not allow the car's rpm's to increase despite pushing it to the floor. the car did not stall, but rather was in a sudden state of idle.the "wrench" icon flashed on, then "check engine light" and my car went from 65 to 5mph in a matter of seconds. after car's ignition was shut off, the car restarted without problem. however, the incident happened again after reentering freeway nearly causing a serious accident. dealership was able to confirm that the throttle needed to be replaced, but not under powertrain warranty. research shows that this is a common problem. this is very dangerous and needs to be recalled asap. *tr

Vehicle stalls at any speed. after shutdown, vehicle restarts and runs fine for a minute or two and then stalls again. *tr

Vehicle stalled upon acceleration from stop, and lost all throttle function. surges at idle, and intermittently stalls. throttle failed the next day at highway speed. same symptoms as the failed throttle body sensor issue that was fixed by october 2009, but my escape was built in december '09 after the problem was supposedly fixed. *tr

I was driving down the road when my gas pedal stopped working and my car would not accelerate. after turning the car off and back on, the problem recurred four times before i finally called a tow truck. the repair shop diagnosed the problem as the throttle body stuck in an open position. the part is now on national back order. it is an expensive and, due to the back order, long repair. *tr

P2111 code (throttle body stuck open); accelerator pedal stops working; vehicle goes into a limp home mode. cycle the ignition key and everything starts working again. problem keeps repeating itself. suspect the throttle body is malfunctioning. *tr

While driving with cruise control set, 60mph on i-64 @ i-170 the vehicle stopped forward motion. it coasted to a stop but the engine did not stop. the accelerator did not work and the rpm stayed between 750 and 1000. the ignition was tuned off then back on in about 2 minutes and the accelerator worked. ford dealer replaced the throttle body unit. *tr

Car stalled in parking lot, restarted stalled again. had towed to dealer, no codes showed. the mechanic drove car for about 100 miles no problem but said it could be throttle body they have seen that before. on 9/15/2013 was driving car and the wrench light came on and car would only move slowly. stopped shut off car restarted but same thing. had car towed toi same dealer and they replaced the throttle body. luckly i was on a back road with no trafic, if this had happened on a highway the results could have been very bad.

After being at a stoplight, i was accelerating around a corner about 25 mph and the car suddenly lost power and would no longer accelerate. the engine light came on. i had to coast to the side of the road and put my hazards on. i was quickly able to restart the car and drive home, although the same thing happened twice the very next day while accelerating after being at a stoplight. *tr

As i am driving the vehicle i loose all power and acceleration without warning of any kind. diagnostic code reads a p 2111 (throttle control system stuck open) this has happened several times and i have been in heavy traffic what it has. luck i wasn't killed by a semi. as i said it looses power and acceleration and stalls out i have looked around online and there are several complaints out there but no recall for it. why is this? if there are so many of these vehicles having identical problems that the part to that needs to be replaced is on back order nation wide then there is a manufacturing defect not a part failure do to use. what is up with this. *tr

During highway driving the throttle stopped working with out warning. i had no propulsion and had to pull over to the side of the road. i then turned off my car and back on and then was able to drive as normal. this has happened 4 times, it is intermittent and happens with out warning. *tr

I was driving approx. 50-55 mph and going uphill when the engine lost power and would not accelerate despite trying to pump the petal. the car did not shut off completely but idled roughly with the yellow wrench light on. i had to flip on the hazards and get over three lanes of scary traffic on a busy vancouver, bc highway and turn the car off and back on again. this was the 5th time this happened in 30 days, with the first being on the ship canal bridge in seattle, the 2nd exactly 7 days later in the same spot, followed by twice in one morning 2 weeks later on the way to vancouver. each time it has been over 50mph and going uphill, or having to quickly accelerate to get past a slower moving car. the ford dealerships don't care and just want to charge a fortune to fix it. i haven't read from anyone if the new part even fixes the problem? i'm at the point where i'm stressed all the time driving never knowing where it will crap out and avoiding highways and roads where there is no shoulder to stop on. i loved the car but am too scared to drive it so i've started to take the bus. ford should be ashamed of themselves for not taking immediate action on this known problem! when is ford going to take responsibility for this and issue a recall? are they waiting for someone to die because of it? this is so dangerous, thank god it happened during daylight hours - i'm terrified of what will happen if it is night time. *tr

Had my 2010 ford escape fixed due to a throttle body issue. the car would suddenly loose power and almost stall. this happened at all speeds. technician was very familiar with it and said it was a common issue but ford was not doing a recall. this very unsafe as it would happen on the highway at all speeds. *tr

After sitting a stop light, when gas pedal was pushed to go there was no power. engine was running but car would not move. check engine light also went on. mechanic diagnosed a throttle body malfunction and has replaced the part. the car is a one-owner, 3-year old ford escape. *tr

I was driving along i30 and gas pedal stopped working. i had to cross over 2 lanes of traffic to get out of the way. my car was idling roughly and gas pedal still did not make my car go. i turned car off. my car would start but when it got past 30 mph, the gas pedal stopped working again. i called my husband and he brought our truck and trailer, and we hauled it home. *tr

When coming to a stop and then trying to accelerate from and idle position the vehicle will loose power. by this i mean the vehicle stays on, lights on dash remain on, motor is still running, but the accelerator pedal has no effect on the vehicle. the vehicle has shutter to it. pressing the gas pedal has no effect no matter how much you try or how much time passes. you have to coast to the side of the road, turn off the vehicle, and restart the vehicle to get the gas pedal working again. this is a very very dangerous flaw in the vehicle as this has happened to me three times in busy los angeles intersections. i fear it will cause an accident. the ford dealer wants to charge me $800 to replace the throttle body which has hundreds of thousands of complaints online about this exact issue. they refused to acknowledge this recurring and very prominent flaw in their vehicle and say even the extended warranty i purchased for $2,200 will not cover this particular part. this is very frustrating. hopefully you guys can bring some justice to the hundreds of thousands of people dealing with this exact issue. thank you for your time. *tr

Wrench light lit up on the dash, car decelerated and stopped in the roadway and traffic. engine was still running, but no response from the gas pedal. turned the car off for 10 minutes. started again and drove it home. could have been a dangerous situation on a more crowded roadway. based on internet research, a recall on the throttle body should be issued. *tr

We were traveling at 55 mph on the highway when my ford escape suddenly stalled and would no longer respond when i pressed the accelerator. my suv slowed to a stop where i cut it off. unfortunately, i did not have enough speed to pull off to a safe location and was stuck in the middle of the very busy highway where i was almost sideswiped by a tractor trailer truck. it was a very scary situation to say the least. this has since happened 3 more times, the most recent being yesterday august 23 on an interstate overpass in rush hour traffic. again i did not have enough speed to pull off to a safe location and was stuck in the center lane of the overpass. i was able to restart my car soon after stalling out and was able to an auto store that pulled the code of p2112, which is the throttle body code. of course my warranty ran out in june 2013 and ford estimates the repair to cost $500 minimum. and sadly, i am now afraid to drive my escape as i fear it will get me into an accident. i ask that ford take responsibility for the obvious flaw in throttle body and make the recall! *tr

Driving on interstate at 55 mph when vehicle lost all acceleration. gas pedal was ineffective. had to coast off road, shut vehicle down, restart it and was able to accelerate. at garage was told cost of part (expensive) but part was on back order and that the vehicle was not safe to drive until it was repaired since stalling or failure to accelerate could happen again at any time, and the vehicle might not "recover". *tr

We were riding on interstate 40 traveling at about 75mph. my 18 year old son was driving. the vehicle suddenly lost power. we had to pull to the side of the interstate. luckily there was not any traffic or transfer trucks directly behind us. without warning, the vehicle lost power and the 'wrench light' came on. we immediately dropped down to about 40 mph. we sat beside of the interstate and called my husband to come to where we were. we did not attempt to crank the vehicle while waiting for him because we did not know what was wrong and feared causing further damage (i was not familiar with the throttle/powertrain light warning). when my husband got there, we cranked the vehicle and i drove us home without incident. i was afraid to allow my son to drive it because i feared the same thing would happen again. i hate to think what could have happened had there been another car or a transfer truck behind us. due to the fact that we lost power without warning and so suddenly, i feel that if there had been a transfer truck directly behind us it would not have had time to stop or slow down and it would have hit us. thankfully, we are scared, but fine this time. we are now afraid to drive my 2010 ford escape on any interstate or in any fast moving traffic. *tr

Car stalled in traffic! *tr

The throttle body went bad on my 2010 ford escape limited v6 3.0l engine. my car is 41 days out of warranty and the for dealer charge me close to 500. dollars to replace the throttle body. i kept the old throttle body for evidence. there should be some type of regulation on this item. because i almost got killed by this defect. ford manager contacted me,her name is [xxx]. she told me to keep my receipt because they were having problems with the throttle body's vendor. that this may come to a recall.. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6), *tr

Vehicle has the same throttle body condition as other failed units. code p2111. *tr

After the april 30, 2013 (54,367miles) incident, the vehicle was repaired by the ford dealer and on aug 4th (58,700+/- miles), the same symptoms appeared while driving on open freeway 65 mph with rolling hills. the vehicle experienced a power drop and surge with automatic transmission gear shifting. a warning light--mechanic wrench turned on and then there was a different engine/transmission sound and it would not shift out of gear by itself so we put it into neutral and rolled to a stop. the car was towed approx 70miles to the same ford dealer near our home. we are waiting for the service dept to return our calls and provide the detail technical information of fault codes etc and how they plan to repair it again. same condition, appears to be an engineering design or manufacturing defect of specific components, (throttle body, transmission). *tr

Vehicle lost all power while the electrical system remained on. unable to supply fuel to the engine. vehicle coasted to a stop. was in passing lane at the time, with traffic behind me. able to pull off highway. the vehicle restarted without icon lights. drove approximately 2 miles, same situation. vehicle restarted with check engine light remaining on. vehicle was taken to a local ford dealer for repair. diagnostic codes indicated a failed throttle body assembly. this was a non-warranty repair costing $608.80 plus rental car. *tr

Car stalled while driving at 40 miles per hour.this situation happened after i took the car to the dealership for a fuel service. the car stalling was awful. it was the third time it happened during that week. the engine service soon sign went on after the incident. i was driving my car with my 2 years old daughter in the backseat. it was a dangerous situation. i was lucky not to be hit by other cars. i brought the car to the service again and they said it was a failure of the throttle body. they charged me 600 dollars for a replacement. i am not happy with this situation because it looked like a malfunction. the car is under 20000 miles and i keep it in tip top condition. *tr

When driving the vehicle, the accelerator became useless and i had to coast to the side of the road, turn the ignition off and back on and everything was fine at that point. this happened on 4 different occasions before i was able to get the vehicle to the local ford dealer for an analysis of the situation. the dealer replaced the throttle body and charged me $159.13 for the part and labor. *tr

While driving on 3 lane highway (in traffic) car bucked and lost gas pedal (did nothing when pushed) i was in center lane engine went to idol with no engine control looked in mirror seen truck lights ( very scary ) when u can't do nothing luckily able to get off road . turned off engine an re started it when a short distance then same thing happened. did this 7 times in less than 7 miles luck i made it to my drive way (had towed to dealer next day) waiting for it to be fixed. this is a death waiting to happen. *tr

It, has happen various times since august, as i drive, the engine start to either misfire or no power at all, it idle normal but as soonest i step on the accelerator start the problem, has light the check engine several times and as the mechanic scans the vehicle the only code that shows is p2111, the last time that happens, have to use a towing service because can get it moving, before i used to turn the engine off, wait several seconds and started again and the situation disappears for a few days and appears back again. please advice. *tr

Driving down interstate 45 in houston, car was running, but no power from the gas pedal. needed to coast to an exit where i stopped completely. i needed to power down the car completely then restart the car before the gas pedal worked again. this has happened twice. the other time was about a month earlier. ford service department said it was a defective "throttle body". something like that shouldn't fail so early. i was just out of my warranty as well. *tr

My 17 yer old daughter was driving at highway speed and vehicle lost power and immediatley slowed quickly. there were vehicles in front and in back of her at the time and since the vehicle slowed on it's own, there were no brake lights to warn traffic around her that she was slowing. very scary situation. ford dealership diagnosed the problem as a bad throttle body, with a 2 month wait for the part due to high number of ford vehicles with this problem (part on backorder). i am guessing with a 2 month wait on a part, there are thousands of ford owners who have had similar experience. thought this was a joke, but after calling other ford dealerships and checking the internet soon found out my duaghters experince was not unique.

My vehicle stalled out twice so i took it to the dealer and have been told i have to replace the throttle body. *tr

While on a two lane road driving 40 mph, the engine in my 2010 ford escape started to sputter as if it was going to die. it did not, but immediately after the incident i was no longer able to accelerate my vehicle. the engine did not rev, the car remained on but just coasted. i pulled over to the side of the road, turned off my car and turned it on again. i was then able to drive for approximately 7 minutes until the same problem occurred again. the next day i experienced the same problem on a 4 lane road going approximately 45 mph. this is a serious problem and could have had a fatal outcome. ford needs to recall the throttle body for all affected vehicles immediately!! *tr

The car has twice this past week stalled while in motion. once at 55 mph once at 65 mph. i had to stop, pull over on road side. place in park. then restart. *tr

While driving at interstate speed vehicle lost all power and i was forced to pull over and stop. engine did not quit running, just nothing happens when gas peddle is pushed. shut off engine, then restarted it then ran find for a while, then does it again. very dangerous situation. on the 30 mile drive home this occurred about a dozen times. my mechanic is replacing the throttle body as i'm writing this. as i need my vehicle to get around i can't wait for a recall..my mechanic told me in my case the throttle body stuck closed. if it would have been stuck open it would accelerate instead of loosing all power. i don't want to thing what might have happened if that were the case. *tr

I was driving down a local street then i was approaching a train crossing, just before crossing the tracks, my car went limp and i could no longer accelerate. i was only traveling 5-10mph so when my car stopped, part of my car was over the train tracks. i could not move my car for about a minute while i parked my car and turned everything off, including opening the car door to shut the computer off. then after resetting the car, it struggled to start up but started and drove as usual. within the last two days, my car shut down during driving 5 times and when re-starting, it did not indicate that there was a problem. finally the check engine icon turned on and i was able to take it to the dealership to check the code. it turned out that the throttle body needed replacing. my car is only 3 years old with average mileage. this could have been an terrible accident if there was a train and i was in a state of panic. *tr

I was driving on the highway and suddenly the wrench lit up and my car began to slow down, even though i continued to hold down the gas pedal. i was able to get the side of the highway since it was late at night, but during rush hour, i would have created a pile up. the car started fine about 10 minutes later, but i took it to the dealership and was told that it was a throttle body problem and they are on back order and i would have to pay for a rental car or drive a car around that could randomly stall for the next week. i am currently waiting for the parts to come in. *tr

While making a right turn in my 2010 ford escape the car loss all acceleration. the next morning it happened twice more. my mechanic took the car & attached to the computer and the code p2112 appeared. he cleaned the throttle body and took a test drive. it lost acceleration 10 more times. this is a disgrace and the part must be recalled by the ford motor company! *tr

While driving from michigan to missouri with daughter and granddaughter on expressway at 70 mph my vehicle had a wrench light come on dash board along with engine light. i was unable to accelerate. pulled over to side of road and turned vehicle off and then restarted and proceeded to drive. it did this repeatedly. i pulled off freeway and went to autoparts store that told me that it had to do with throttle body sensor and needed to take to dealer, which i did today. i am on vacation and car is at ford dealership in camdenton, mo. i don't know outcome yet as dealer not able to look at vehicle until tomorrow. *tr

I was driving down the interstate heading to work when i lost all power. the vehicle did not die or stall, it lost power and the gas pedal would not work. as my speed started declining, i had to immediately turn on my emergency lights and move off the side of the road. which was hard at the time with other traffic in that lane. and the decreasing speed while i was in my lane had me nervous as other vehicles came up flying behind me. as soon as i pulled over on the side of the road, my car immediately died. i tried to turn it on after about ten minutes and the engine just rolled but would not come on. after about 25 minutes, my car started up again. i was able to get it to a dealership and they said right away that it was probably the throttle body, but that the part was on back order and would take up to a week to get in. after they checked it out, it was in fact the throttle body. i ended up lucking out because they did have a part for me. upon paying for my repair, i was told by the ford service department, that they had seen a major spike in this repair. they even said they once had 15 cars in one day that all needed the throttle body repaired. and that is why the part had originally been on back order. they also stated that they were not the only dealership noticing this spike. i was informed to keep all my paperwork because with this kind of spike, it could lead to a recall. *tr

While driving on new jersey turnpike, car lurched and no longer had any gas acceleration capability, while in four lanes of heavy traffic. carefully maneuvered into right breakdown lane and brought car to a stop. when stopped, vehicle lurched and sputtered until key was turned off. once turned back on, car started normally. the issue occurred 4 more times during the trip. this was an extreme safety issue and highly stressful to our family. *tr

I was traveling at apx 45 mph when the yellow wrench error message appeared on the dash. at the same time the vehicle ceased to respond to the gas pedal. the engine and electrical system remained on however there was no power coming from the engine. the vehicle coasted as it lost momentum. i was able to pull off the major road that i was on. the vehicle shuddered as i came to a stop and turned it off. when i restarted the vehicle, the yellow wrench error light went out and the vehicle started with no problems. the ford dealership later diagnosed the problem as the throttle body component. there had been no previous indicators of any problems. vehicle had been serviced following the manufacturers service requirements. *tr

Just driving along one day and upon crossing an intersection of a busy street the call stalled. i pushed the gas pedal and couldnt accelerate. luckily i was able to pull of on a side street without holding up traffic. when i got to the side street i shut the car off and started it again and after taking awhile it finally started back up only to do the same thing a block later. the problem seemed to have gone away for a couple weeks but has came back recently and is ever more frequent. when it sets over night or for long periods of time it is driveable but after a few miles it starts to stall again. driving under 30 mph or accelerating super slow seems to help some times but not always. still probably not very safe to drive it like that especially pulling onto a busy street or out into a busy intersection. *tr
