After loading the vehicle, i shut the rear gate. the rear window exploded upon impact and shards of glass flew all over the street and the back of the vehicle scaring the kids. *tr
The rear lift gate window glass exploded as i was closing the lift gate. according to your website, this defect has already been investigated and closed: date investigation opened: apr 27, 2011; date investigation closed: aug 18, 2011; nhtsa action number: pe11016; component(s): structure , visibility. *js
Rear glass exploded for no reason. *tr
The rear window of the car suddenly exploded. i closed the tailgate, and a moment later, the rear window exploded without provocation. more of the shattered glass went into the car than went outside it. it did not injure me, fortunately, but hundreds of shards of glass went everywhere. the most ridiculous thing was that there was no seeming cause. nothing was touching the window. the temperature was chilly but moderate (40's). there was no indication that anything was amiss; the window just exploded. looking online, it seems that this problem has been reported in 2010 and some 2011 ford escapes, and there was even an inconclusive investigation in 2011 by the ntsb. but at this point, there is no recall on the window. *tr

My car was parked at my mothers in front of her garage. i was inside the barn with her and we heard this noise. i looked outside and my rear window on the hatch had exploded. it was only about 70 degrees and cloudy outside, the vents were open and the drivers side window was part way down for air. no one was near the car when it happened. it just exploded for no known reason. nothing left to it. *tr
I sent this email to ford in september 2014 i was in an auto accident where by another vehicle hit a deer which landed on the driver side window which shattered into thousands of tiny shards of glass. for over 2 years, i have being dealing with thousands of tiny shards embedded through out my body (face, lips, hands, arms, legs, neck, chest) which over time are working their way out. it is very painful and leaving scars and disrupting my sleep on a regular basis. when the vehicle was repaired, i turned on the heat for the first time and hundreds of shards of glass blew out the heater vents. my vehicle vin number is [xxx]. i think you should test the windshields of similar cars from that lot to make sure the safety glass was properly kilned or whatever treatment process so that others do not potentially experience the same incident. i question also if the impact exploded the glass in a similar way the rear window hatch glass that is frequently found on-line and if the manufacturer of the windshields had some type of quality control issue. at a lost of words given this is the second email i am sending to your corporation regarding this incident. i can be reached at information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
During a partly sunny, lows 80's degree day my back window exploded while no one was touching it. the glass was everywhere throughout my car and i cut several cuts while cleaning it up. *tr
In august i had gone into my office and looked out and my back window was down..i thought i didn't remember lowering it. found out it had just dropped on its own...no noise from the motor, just dropped. august 31st i pulled up with friends to eat and we got out and i looked back and the other rear window had fell also. so now within 15 days both windows, back behind drivers seat and the one behind the passenger seat will not go back up and i am being told it will be over $500 to repair. i don't understand how these two windows could become non working in less than 15 days apart. no one at ford will help me...i would appreciate any assistance you could give me. thanks *tr
The rear windshield exploded while i was parked. i was behind the car and was showered with glass as were my personal items in the back of the car. *tr
The rear window has two clamps that attach to the vehicle. the clamps are deteriorating and crumbling to pieces. i have also seen this on other ford escapes. with the clamps falling apart it will only be a matter of time until the rear window will shift or fall off. this same vehicle is rusting also. the rear hatchback is rusting out and other components. ford motor company refuses to take care of the problem. *tr
When i closed my hatchback the rear window shattered and glass flew everywhere. i had a couple cuts on my hands from the glass falling. *tr
On 3/22/14 i purchased a used 2010 ford escape at rountree ford in swanzey nh. on 3/23/14 i parked the vehicle, let my dogs out of the back cargo area, when i closed the tailgate the rear window shattered into a million pieces for no apparent reason. *tt
My 2010 ford escape was parked. i open hatch, closed it and the entire rear window shattered and fell out! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that the vent controls failed without warning. the contact was unable to use the air conditioning and heating function. years before, the dealer replaced the power steering control module and the ic module, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the throttle body sensor and blower motor failed. the contact later experienced an extremely strong vibration in the steering wheel and the power steering warning light flashed. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for further inspection to determine the cause of the failure. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). the dealer replaced the parts. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 97,411.
Vehicle was parked in my driveway. this happened at about 10:30 a.m. i had removed some items in the rear of the vehicle and then shut the rear tailgate. the rear tailgate glass had not be opened and was closed as usual on the liftgate. the liftgate was closed in the normal fashion. i was in the process of walking away from the car after closing the tailgate when the rear tailgate glass exploded. nothing had struck the glass from either the inside or outside to cause this to happen. i received some minor scratches on my hand. the glass exploded as far as 6-8' behind and to the sides of the vehicle as well as all over the interior of the vehicle. *tr
On sunday, november 3, 2013, at approximately 8:40am, i returned to my car with several bags of groceries. i opened the rear door and placed the bags inside. when i shut the door, the rear hatch window exploded into a thousand pieces. there was glass everywhere inside the car and in the lot. it was a cool morning (maybe 45 degrees f), but not particularly cold. *tr
My vehicle which is a 2010 ford escape has 2 major safety issues. this is now the third issue with my 2010 ford escape where the rear window shatters whileclosing the gate. this is a known issue with ford and they will not fix. glass shatters into thousands of pieces and projects 10-15 feet in any given direction. yet, ford will do nothing to fix. this is very unsafe where i have had glass shot at my face and i also have a dog that is often put in the back of the vehicle. the only way ford will do something is if i pay. i also wonder how many people have not filed complaints thinking this is a fluke accident and may have gone through insurance. i know it is no fluke since this is the third time this has happened and talking with ford they acknowledge the issue. there should be a recall on this vehicle. i have filed two other complaints with the nhtsa. the second is with the throttle body. the car will loose all power at varying speeds. i have lost power on the highway and the car almost stalls. the technical (not a ford one) that i brought this to said it was a common issue but ford was doing nothing about this. i have filed complaints with the nhtsa and there are many other complaints but there is nothing being done about these issues. ford refuses to fix them. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that the rear window shattered as the contact closed the hatchback without excessive force. the failure recurred on two separate occasions. the contact took the vehicle to an authorized dealer both times and the dealer informed the contact that they did not provide assistance for window repairs. vehicle was repaired by an independent mechanic both times. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 5,000. ...updated 08/22/13 *bf
On feb 22, 2013 i experienced a problem with my 2010 ford escape, while closing the rear liftgate my back window completely shattered - resulting in my having to replace the window which cost me $466.83. after some research on the internet, i found the ford knows of this problem and it has happened on other vehicles - my problem occurred while the vehicle was stationary and also in the early morning hours. i also incurred minor cuts and lacerations due to cleaning up the broken glass. i believe since ford motor co. knew of this problem and failed to notify owners of this, i should be entitled for reimbursement of the cost for repairing the window, since it was a defected product. *tr
Vehicle was parked in a lot of a grocery store, opened hatch and put grocery in back of hatch. when i closed hatch door the window exploded sending glass inside the back and on the ground. temperature was below freezing and there nothing that hit the glass to cause it to shatter. did not close hatch door with any excessive force. *tr
When closing the rear hatch of the 2010 ford escape, the glass shattered. temperature below freezing at the time and matches tsb: tsb-11-2-9. no reason for the glass to break at all. glass shattered and cut my finger. small chunk of glass had to be removed from finger. *tr
My rear hatch window just exploded. i pulled into the car port at the airport for our christmas flight home, took luggage out the back and closed the hatch and boom glass everywhere. luckily no one was hurt but what was i supposed to do? miss our flight home for christmas or call a neighbor at 8 am to come swap out vehicles so it wouldn't be vandalized while i was gone. it was in the upper 30s when this happened, however my vehicle stays parked outside so it warmed up gradually like it always does. we i got to my destination i called my ford dealer since i bought the extended warranty and they told me it was not covered under warranty even though i stated the numerous articles that i have read about this issue. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated upon closing the rear lift gate, the glass shattered outwardly. the vehicle was in the process of being repaired by an authorized dealer. the manufacturer was notified of the problem and did not offer any assistance. the approximate failure mileage was 17,936. ..updated 01/30/13 *bf updated 2/5/2013 *js
Wife was driving vehicle, when she heard a pop. when she got home she noticed the sunroof glass had exploded. she told me and i went out to see if i could find a rock or any other foreign object. could not find anything. the sunroof glass just failed in an outward direction. ford has denied warranty claim and denied our appeal. i have read several other reports of this same thing happening with their ford escapes. driving along and hear a pop sound. then later realize their sunroof has failed. this critical situation needs to be brought to attention of ford motor co. and have them stand behind their product, if said product is still under the manufacturers warranty. *tr
My family was about to leave on a trip, my wife closed the rear trunk of our 2010 ford escape, and the window on the rear trunk shattered completely. there was absolutely no obstruction; the window exploded on impact. broken glass fell in all directions: in the car, in the parking lot, on my wife, and around the neighboring cars. we cleaned up the glass on the ground and drove the car to our dealership. we have a full bumper-to-bumper warranty, but were told this type of damage is "unwarrantable." as it was explained to me, any instance in which a window shatters completely and glass shards fall inside the car, ford concludes there must have been an obstruction and does not cover the cost of replacement. ford's corporate office said they could not overturn the serviceman's conclusion unless there was a recall on the part in question. i believe this is an abuse. the window is clearly defective: i have been driving for seventeen years and never witnessed a window explode as this one did, and then i find that at least 18 similar complaints have been filed with the nhtsa for the same issue. to insist that a part must be under recall before they honor a warranty is an unrealistic hurdle that ford puts in place. *tr
Right after the warranty went out the vehicle starting slamming from 1st into 2nd upon acceleration. the idle is very rough and quite loud, the engine makes a funny noise and i take extremely good care of my vehicle, getting all of the scheduled oil changes on time, replacing the air filter, etc. i also explained to them that the vehicle wasn't idling properly and that the engine used to be quiet. the windshield is extremely thin as well, a small pebble hit my windshield causing a 8 inch crack in a matter of minutes to where it was beyond getting it fixed. then liftgate started giving me problems. when you press the button, it would make the sound, but sometimes open, then on may 17, 2013 it just quit working all together. on may 18, 2013, i took it to reynolds ford for a scheduled oil change right before a trip to mexico and upon telling them about it, they wanted $250 just to look at it before parts and labor. now, the rear blinker doesn't work and you can't replace it due to the fact that you can't get the liftgate to open in order to remove the rear taillight assembly. so, when you are trying to make a left turn, vehicles behind you don't know you are turning and almost hit you (safety hazard). you also can't change a flat tire since you can get to the jack, which is in the rear compartment accessed through the liftgate. this is a serious problem as there is no manual release for the hatch to get it open period, once the latch doesn't work, it just doesn't work. *tr
I shut my tailgate and the rear window shattered on my 2010 ford escape. no one was injured, but it definitely made a huge mess and it was a shock to have this happen. this is the second issue my vehicle has had this year. a few months ago the throttle control went on the vehicle. both not covered by ford, due to the warranty over. i have many concerns that a two year old vehicle could have these type of things going wrong with it. my other concern is ford won't acknowledge these issues with recalls and many of my fellow ford owners are having the same issues. please check into this for us. can say i definitely won't be buying ford again after this. *tr
2010 ford escape back hatch and window fail to open. this is a keyless window and hatch. ford dealership wants to charge 380.00 to repair. ford does not have a manual or secondary system to open the back hatch and/or window. this fail has rendered the back portion of the escape useless. in an emergency, a secondary manual opening device from the interior and exterior needs to be retro-fitted, after market by ford. the dealership where we purchased the vehicle, has no interest in resolving this obvious engineering blunder. *tr
I was shutting the tailgate when the back glass just shattered. it was 15 degrees outside. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that the vehicle was parked when the rear liftgate window exploded. the contact found a technical service bulletin under service bulletin number: tsb-11-2-9 (visibility:glass, side/rear) but was told by the manufacturer that the failure was not covered under warranty. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 25,400 and the current mileage was 26,000.
I went to close the rear and went it shut, the rear window exploded shattering glass and sending it about 15 feet from the vehicle, no unnecessary force was used in closing the hatch, nothing was blocking it or anything. bought this vehicle in october 2011. this happened jan. 13, 2012. just closed the hatch and boom, glass went everywhere. *tr
I was traveling during the holidays and went to a car wash. when the attendant went to close the rear lift gate the back window glass exploded outward and completely shattered. i have had the window replaced at my expense with the revised window components listed in the ford tsb 11-2-9. the car wash provided me with security camera footage of the incident. *tr
Moved some items from rear of vehicle to back seat area. closed liftgate, then closed rear passenger door. rear liftgate glass shattered a few seconds later. both window shocks shot outward. glass landed both inside and outside of vehicle. i took photos with my cell phone. *kb
The glass on the driver's side door of my vehicle has many vertical scratches - more as i use the window. i am fearful that as time passes these scratches will impair my view. i have read of many owners having the same problem and at least one in which the glass spontaneously 'spider webbed'. i have contacted the local ford dealer as well as ford customer care regarding this issue and because the vehicle is out of warranty for that component they will not repair. they will not even allow a field representative to have a look. ford has issued a technical service bulletin - tsb 10-25-5 that describes the problem i am experiencing and the repair procedures. currently there are numerous scratches on the driver's side and a few on the passenger side (passenger window is used less frequently). there are numerous complaints regarding window glass - http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2010/ford/escape/window+glass. http://www.arfc.org/complaints/2010/ford/escape/visibility/problem.aspx. i am contacting you because i feel this and other glass problems are a safety issue and should be recalled and repaired by ford.please help to fix these problems and mine. thank you, *tr
Subject: rear window "exploded". i closed the tailgate, not the window, and by the time i was 2-3 steps away, the window "exploded". the car was parked for about an hour before opened and i closed the tailgate door, then the window chattered into pieces that flew in all directions. i only opened and closed the door, i did not operate or touch the window but it chattered. it was the first and only door i had opened when it happened. glass flew in all directions in little pieces like 8 feet away on the outside and like 3 feet on the inside. the sock absorbers are sticking out of the window and are too hard to retract and can't be put back inside the car. the rear wiper asembly is hanging and the heater elements are dangling too. the outside temperature was around the 40's at around 10:40 pm. nothing could've touched the glass at the time of closing door since i only had a charcoal bag laying flat on the cargo area with a small box of aluminum foil, a small toolbox (like 4" x 8" x 12"), also laying flat on the cargo area floor, and a small blanket. *tr
Rear wiper fails to operate at constant speed, often preventing driver from seeing what is behind, which creates a safety concern. owner's manual (page 66) states that rear wiper has a normal speed and an intermittent speed. however, dealership and ford customer care claim that two intermittent settings (one with longer delay) is the design intent. this is absurd. no other vehicle with a rear wiper which i have driven (rent frequently) does not have a constant speed operation. *tt
2010 ford escape limited(hybrid) rear windshield glass exploded sometime during the day while i was working a 12 hour shift in the parking lot of my current job. location being indianapolis, in, yesterday was in the 90 degree range of temperature. walk out to my car about 1:30 a.m. this morning and saw glass all over the ground, looked up to my vehicle, and noticed the back window was still in one piece in the middle and glass cracked out all around the edges. no sign of an accident or damage to the exterior of my vehicle except little scratches from where the glass had busted out. components holding the glass were hanging out of the latch including the windshield wiper component, hinges glass was attached to., and glass latch you would use to open the compartment. being that this happened on a saturday night/sunday morning, no replacements were done as the ford dealership will not be open until monday. have a 5 year/100k warranty on the vehicle and plan on taking it in the first thing tomorrow morning. the trunk compartment had not been used all day or even the vehicle since about 11 am earlier saturday morning. had been sitting for close to 13 hours. glass exploded out about 4-5 feet behind the vehicle. very displeased. *tt
My husband and i were at our camp site and loading the vehicle for a trip in the woods. it was early morning, around 34 degrees outside. we had the rear hatch door open, putting the dogs inside the back of the vehicle. upon closing the hatch, the rear hatch window violently exploded. glass went flying everywhere, luckily the dogs weren't hurt and no persons were in the car at the time. we immediately called our ford dealer to report the incident & asked if there was a defect known and if this was a warranty issue. they said they had never heard of a problem. this is extremely dangerous!!! i can only imagine there are probably lots more of these incidents that haven't been reported because most companies flat out tell you glass is not covered.
I just leased a 2010 ford escape only 10 months old. the hatch back window exploded 3 times. the last 2 times was in a matter of 2 months. the last time it exploded by daughter was by the glass and most of the pieces shattered on her. this is crazy. know as i google i see this is an ongoing issue. i am going to ford. they better do something about this. the glass company i went to get it fixed said it will happen again. this car should be recalled!!!!!!! *tr
Was driving my new 2010 ford escape hybrid, which i had just purchased in august, 2010 at about 40 mph when - for no apparent reason - the rear window on the driver's side imploded. if a child had been in backseat, the child would have a highly likelihood of injury to eyes and probably cuts. took the car to the dealership - and upon their inspection - they said there was nothing wrong with the window mechanism; and therefore, ford would not fix the window for free. ended up costing me $500. i understand ford has been having issues with the same type of freak window explosions/implosions in the ford escape. ford should be made to replace these windows - the dealerships are of no help whatsoever. *tr
Closed rear door on my 2010 ford escape. the window shattered and the glass cut up my hand. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 ford escape. the contact stated that the windshield glass would break with the slightest impact. the vehicle was taken to a glass mechanic who advised the contact that the windshield glass was repaired. the failure mileage was 10,000 and the current mileage was 21,643. *js updated 5/11/12 *cn consumer stated this vehicle windshield cracked easier than other vehicles owned. glass mechanic stated windshield should be angled not straight. dealer apologized and that all cost were her responsibility. updated 6/7/12 *sd
I went to open up my real tailgate to place a blanket in the back of the escape. i closed the tailgate with normal velocity and when it shut, the rear window imploded. the tailgate was not slammed, the window itself did not have any damage prior to this incident. i only had the car for <1 month. i only put 312 miles myself on the vehicle. this could of been more dangerous if either the vehicle was traveling or children were in the backseat.
