Problems with 2009 Ford Escape ENGINE

On average, the 2009 Ford Escape starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 74 064 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2009 Ford Escape

Vehicle engine stalled i-10east went into emergency lane, vehicle was still trying to run the engine was choking but no acceleration. i stopped put the vehicle in park turned the key and it started. this has happened 3 times since the first time. i don't want to be a statistic. *tr

While driving, the vehicle lost power. when pressing on gas it just coasted. the wrench warning light came on. was able to get to side of the road, but almost got hit from behind. turned vehicle off, restarted and was back on the road. on other occasions there has been some surging. i see that there has been many complaints on this problem and it is getting some press that there is a defective part (throttle body). i contacted ford service and was told that they could look at it, but it is not under warranty. however, the wrench warning light indicate a power train issue, i was told it is not covered under the power train warranty. this does not make sense and it truly looks like a defective part. this is very unsafe and could result in a very bad accident in traffic. this needs to be a recall since they are aware of the issue. *tr

Was driving about 25-30 mph on a side street, vehicle started to sputter and stall, felt like the engine was dying, so was able to pull off into a parking lot and turned the car off, sat for a few mins, then restarted and pulled out and everything was fine. approximately 6 months later, similar issue, was driving about 25 on a side street, car sputtered, stalled, so pulled over, turned off, waited then restarted. a few days later, was driving about 35 on a side street, same issue, then the check engine light came on, so pulled over and called for a tow. car is currently being serviced at the ford dealership and have been notified that it was a throttle body issue, which i am having to pay $550 to fix. *tr

My wife and i were driving home from supper at a restaurant. we were on a busy city street doing about 30 mph, when the car suddenly lost power and slowed to around 1 to 2 mph. we managed to ease the car home(around 2blocks) amid horns blowing and lights flashing from other drivers.the engine light had come on and showed a picture of a wrench. when i explained to the lady at the ford dealership the next day,she seemed to know right away that it would be a wrench showing ,which made me assume that they had this problem before.....bill for repairs was $545.00. *tr

Our 2009 ford escape is stalling and surging. the escape suddenly decelerates like it is stalling out, on other occasions it accelerates and revs the engine really high then drops back down. *tr

While driving approximately 55 on an interstate in middle of heavy traffic, my 2009 ford escape xlt 3.0l suddenly decelerated and went into limp mode. i carefully made it to the shoulder as speed dropped to about 5 miles an hour. while parked on the shoulder i noticed the warning light for the electronic throttle was lit. i shut off the engine and waited about 5 minutes. i restarted without incident. this is the 2nd time this has happened and it has been running rough as well. *tr

I had gone of the gas, the vehicle was rolling at about 5miles/h, engine running, towards an intersection when the light turned green and i wanted to accelerate. i stepped on the gas, there was no acceleration, the engine stalled and completely shut off. all engine lights came on similar to when you initially insert the key before starting the car. the escape came to a complete stop at the side of the road. there were no warning lights present, the vehicle was not overheating, it had been serviced and had no prior issues. after putting it back into park i was then able to restart the vehicle without any issues and continue driving. this first happened in january and has since occurred twice again in similar situations, slow rolling and then stalling after an attempt to accelerate. *tr

Stop and speed up and not want to move had to replace throttle body unit. *tr

This happened first on january 7 and again today jjnuary 10, 2013. the car suddenly stops. the yellow wrench warning light comes on and indicates throttle control problem. can turn car off and restart and drive normally. it was very scary as my wife was left in the dark in the middle of a busy street. it seems to be very intermiitent. i have read others reports of this and ford apparently is not taking action. this is very dangerous situation which many have reported. *tr

The vehicle has lost all power while in motion. the battery and oil light comes on. i can restart immediately after shifting to neutral. there is no trouble code indicated on my obdii. this has occurred approximately 13 times in the past six months. i bought the vehicle brand new here in south korea in 2009 through the military overseas car sales program and it is from the usa. as can be imagined it is difficult to work with the korean ford dealer because of the language barrier, distance to travel and getting time off. i am hoping for a recall. it has very low mileage because i am close to work and i am concerned about getting on an expressway. i have also just started getting a p0012 trouble code. i have had the transmission flashed and the build date is august 2008.my current mileage is approximately 16000 miles. *tr

While driving in medium traffic, the engine died and the check-engine-light appeared on the dash. i was able to pull to the side of the road and re-start the car. once back on the highway, the engine died again less than a quarter of a mile later. i started the car a second time and the engine once again died. by this time, traffic was beginning to back up behind me and i was entering an area where there was no shoulder to escape to if it happened again. i pulled off the highway and called for a tow. the local ford dealer said the throttle body had failed, they had recently replace a couple of others. cost of the repair was $400. ford said it was not covered under warranty. i retained the failed part and have it available for inspection. *tr

We have had problems with this vehicle from day one. currently the big issue is the throttle body (which i've seen has been a problem with all the ford escapes). also the mass air flow system, heating/air, and security system (also it has a problem not starting---not sure if that's also throttle body). is this being recalled? *tr

Driving and wrench light came on at the same time that the vehicle lost power. this had happened previously on 11/25/12 and the dealer repair was replacing both vct solenoids and valve cover gaskets. both times when this had happened before i turned the engine off and restarted after 3-5 minutes. i was able to go another 6-8 miles and then the wrench light came back on. the second time, the check engine light came on and then seconds later 8 other lights were lit on the dash. i turned the engine off after coasting to the median of the highway (was in left lane with traffic at 55mph) and waited for a tow from the dealer. now the dealer is telling me this repair (replacement of throttle body) is not covered as the vehicle is more than 3 years old (actually, i've had it for 44 months). i want ford to pay for this repair as it seems rather common from what i'm seeing on-line. *tr

I was driving my vehicle in the center southbound lane on route 93 through the thomas p. o'neill tunnel in boston when all of a sudden, without any warning, my car stalled. the red engine light and oil light came on and the car began decelerating. there was a tremendous amount of traffic and i am unbelievably lucky to have avoided an accident. i guided the car to the right lane (there are no breakdown lanes in the tunnel). i turned the car off and restarted it and was able to continue my drive to my destination. i have read that there is an investigation into the throttle body on this vehicle. this is incredibly dangerous. *tr

As i was turning into my driveway at about 5mph my vehicle stalled hallway in the driveway and halfway in the street. the red engine light and oil light came on. i put the vehicle in park and restarted it. there were no lights on the dashboard at that time and i was able to drive into the driveway. *tr

Car decelerated and wrench sign came on. had to put car in park to get it to restart. kept losing power. *tr

Was driving on the interstate and the car stopped responding to the gas pedal. car had to be towed to a ford dealer, where it was determined the throttle body is bad and has to be replaced to the tune of $350. a google search reveals this is a known problem, there just hasn't been a formal recall yet. *tr

First incident occurred end of november, car stalled while traveling on rte 7 in ct. brought the car to ford where i was told the diagnostic box registered the issue was with the fuel sensors. the fuel sensors were replaced and the car had no issue until april. in april, car stalled again. i brought it to the dealer and the box did not register anything. last week (may 21st), i left my office to go on lunch break and the car stalled 4x. i drove (?) the car straight to the dealer which is less than a mile away. the car registered that it was the throttle body issue. since this is a well known issue with these cars, the part is back ordered with an unknown completion date. the dealer then cleaned out my current throttle body and told me that this was a temporary 3 mos fix. this morning 5/29, the car died again 4x on i-95. 2 of the 4x it stalled, i was in near accidents. this is a widely documented issue with ford and it's incredible to me that there hasn't been a recall on these cars. this is a very serious safety issue. *tr

While driving on a busy highway my car stalls out and shuts off forcing me to pull over and turn the key to off position, waiting several minutes before allowing me to turn the car back on and having to rev the engine for it to turn completely over. a couple miles down the road while coming to a stop or slowing to a stop the car does this again. this will happen about 4 times a day while driving and will happen for about 2-3 days, then will run like it should without incident. about 4-5 months later it will start up again, while driving the car will stall out and this happens several times a day while driving, for a few days. i've taken the car to autoshops to try and figure out the issue and no one seems to be able to detect the problem. this not only is scary, but extremely dangerous. *tr

My 2009 ford escape stalled (engine running but no forward motion and no response to accelerator) while driving. this happened while attempting to enter heavy traffic. i was almost rear-ended by oncoming vehicles. the problem was diagnosed as a problem with the throttle body by dealer. i had to pay to have the throttle body replaced. this is known defect, very similar to nhtsa action # dp12006: "...vehicles that were diagnosed as failed throttle bodies with diagnostic trouble codes p2111, throttle body stuck open, and p2222, throttle body stuck closed. the petitioner indicates that the owners of both vehicles reported experiencing repeated incidents of stalling..." ford has "released a number of technical service bulletins that cover a wide range of vehicles and throttle body issues related to hesitation and stalling, including 08-18-2 and 09-23-5." this is a serious safety issue. i contacted ford (both corporate and the dealership) and they have indicated that they will not take action to address this issue until a recall is initiated by the nhtsa. *tr

Shortly after entering highway on dark rainy evening, with no fore warning, car began to shake and lose power. was able to pull to side of highway. even though i was pressing on the gas, car would not go forward. wrench light was illuminated on the dashboard. called for assistance. when help arrived they suggested i turn off vehicle. when i turned back on, car was fine. the next day, with no warning, same thing occurs on neighborhood road. when we took to ford dealer today, the problem did not repeat so they have no repair code. this is a very dangerous situation....could lead to accident on highway...i have to drive 17 miles to work on highway and i am scared. *tr

Was driving cruise control down the highway when the gas pedal lost affect. the car would no longer accelerate. i stopped on the side of the highway and it was shaking. i shut the car off and restarted it. worked fine the rest of the day. i know its something to do with the throttle body. it has done it maybe 200 times since then and almost caused a serious car crash the last time. *tr

I was driving on the interstate when i started to lose power and the throttle control/drivetrain light came on . i pulled to the berm and the engine felt like it was missing and it would not respond when i pressed the accelerator. i turned the vehicle off, waited and then turned it back on. the light was off and it ran okay. i continued to work with no further problems. on the way home from work the exact same thing occurred only traffic was much heavier on the interstate so getting to the berm was much more hazardous. i turned it off and then back on and it ran okay again. i contacted my local ford dealer and was able to schedule an appt for the next evening. the next day on the way to work the vehicle did the same thing as i pulled into an intersection. traffic was light so i was able to stop turn it off and then back on and it ran okay. i took it to the dealer that evening and they kept it so their service dept could analysis the problem. the next evening they contacted me and advised they could find nothing wrong with the vehicle. i picked it up and drove it to work and home the next day with no problem. the following day it occurred again and i contacted the dealer and they had me bring it in. i was approx. 15 miles from the dealership when i contacted them and the vehicle did the same thing 2 more times before i could get to the dealership, once in an intersection and once on the interstate. after they analyzed it again they advised me it was the throttle body actuator (code p2111 throttle body actuator stuck open forced to limit power) the vehicle has just over 37,500 miles on it so it is not covered by warranty. looking on the web and the nhtsa website this doesn't appear unique to my vehicle. since this occurs without any warning and has happened at very inopportune times this looks to be a safety concern. *tr

I was running some errands and as i was on my way to the grocery store my 2009 ford escape shut down. i was almost in the middle of an intersection when it happened. it lasted for about 5 seconds before turning back on. i was able to pull into a parking lot and i shut off the engine then after a few moments i restarted it. luckily that has been the only time it has happened but i still worry about it doing the same thing again. at the time i was so shaken up that i went straight home because i did not want to get stranded. my suv just hit 100k so i was looking up any inspections it might need and came across other complaints of the same issue for the same year. *tr

I recently read in a newspaper about an engine probe for ford vehicles and would like to add that i have also experienced this problem with stalling and/or surging engine in my 2009 ford escape limited. i believe my car had experienced this "limp home mode" on the circuit board. on this particular day, i was driving in traffic and then all of a sudden i felt as though i could not accelerate the car at all. the rest of my trip home (approx. 25 miles) the car wouldn't let me surpass about 20mph. i was very scared but wanted to at least get the car closer to my home. i thought the car was done for. yet, after letting the car rest for about an hour at home, i started it back up and it drove fine. i just wanted to share this experience of yet another person who could contribute to experiencing a malfunctioning circuit board. *tr

The vehicle loses power and decelerates unexpectedly. the problem began on september 4, 2012 whilst i was driving. i pulled over and when i came to a stop the engine idled very rough with a heavy surge. i turned the engine off and restarted. the vehicle continued without problems. on september 5, 2012 it re-occurred about 7 times in a 12 mile journey and i took it to a ford dealer for a check. the scan indicated an error code p2112 indicating a faulty throttle switch position sensor. the dealer advised that i should change the entire throttle body. after the scan the vehicle worked fine and then a few months later the problem re-occurred intermittently.. on may 22, 2013 the problem resurfaced to the point where the vehicle cannot be driven more than a mile without the sudden deceleration is now at the point where it cannot be safely driven. *tr

Purchased used 2009 ford escape in august 2012. ran fine for the first month then started to hesitate when accelerating. we are now having repeated hesitation and engine surging. we are becoming concerned about pulling into traffic and having the engine stall. with only 44000 miles in it, ford will not pay for the repair because it is out of warranty. first ford purchased in 30 years, probably the last too. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving 20 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the engine continued running however, the vehicle would not accelerate. the check engine warning light illuminated once after the failure. the contact had to turn off and restart vehicle in order to resolve the failure momentarily. the vehicle was taken to a dealer who ran a diagnostic and discovered that the failure was caused by the variable cam timing solenoid. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the contact was waiting to receive a response from the manufacturer. the failure and current mileage was 44,000.

Was driving in right lane approximately 45mph and i lost all acceleration. thought i had a flat or something. pulled over and into a parking lot. engine was idling rough so i turned it off and called my husband to see what was happening with the car. husband came and restarted, drove home no issue. on 8/11/12 driving to store the same thing happened but this time noticed the wrench light came on. the gas pedal stopped working loosing all engine power. pulled over and called my husband to see what happened. left car running, husband pressed gas pedal but engine stayed at rough idle. turned car off and restarted, drove car home and called servicing dealership for appointment. had the vehicle serviced on 8/10/12 to check transmission, thought that was the problem but they said everything was fine. they said they would let us know today 8/12/12 if vehicle should be towed in rather then driving it in due to safety reasons. *tr

When slowing down engine would stall at any speed. slowly progressed into a hesitation from a red light. sparatic idle after stopping. wrench light would come on every time. now check engine light and wrench light on together. *tt

Pulled out onto a very busy secondary roadway...applied pressure to the accelerator and it just sat there while oncoming traffic closed in on me. this was the first of many hesitations that nearly got me killed. to make it worse...when power comes back it comes back so fast it throws you back in the seat...actually burning rubber. after a year of intermittent problems with this i took it into ford dealership and they diagnosed a faulty throttle body....trouble code p2112. since this is a safety issue and had nothing to do with routine maintenance i expected ford to take care of it. they want to charge me $400 dollars to fix a problem they created with substandard parts. *tr

While driving the vehicle i suddenly lost power and wrench and engine light came on. i was able to turn the car back on after a complete stop. car was taken immediately to ford and they said nothing wrong with it and if it happens again bring it in. after multiple times on city streets and interstates which i feared for my life, the car would have no power and the engine would not accelerate when i would step on gas. had to shut the engine off and restart to make anything work. after that i took it to ford again and this time they replaced throttle body-air intake which they said there were other vehicles with similar issues. i had to pay out of pocket due to out of warranty but they surely know there is a defect there in the throttle bottle and certainly an endangerment to those driving the vehicle and to those around them. *tr

When the gas pedal is pushed there seems to be no gas going in there.the a motor actually goes from a normal sounding engine and it sounds like it drops down to a lower gear when this happens and i have to coast to park safely. then i have to wait a half hour to start the vehicle up again and sometimes it will just conked out again. now what its doing its getting it got worse and now i can only go maybe 5 minutes and it conk out again. *tr

I started having problems with my car shutting down in feb 2012. after 2 throttle body's and still problems the dealer put a flight recorder on my car. this recorded 5 episodes of engine failure. they found that a sensor to the main computer was bad and replaced it. they left the recorder on and today 3/12/13 the car stopped twice and i pressed the recorder button. the car seizes, the engine revs when standing still and hesitates upon pick up. this has gone on long enough. ford doesn't know what to do about this problem and it is hazardous to my health. one day my luck may not be good as to who is behind me when it stalls. recall! recall! recall! someone needs to do something about this! *tr

In february 2012 (mileage approx 32900), i experienced jerking upon accelerating as my 2009 ford escape was changing gears. the dealer assessed it as a computer malfunction and reprogrammed the computer. my wife and i have had intermittent problems with jerking upon accelerating since. then, on 10/20/2012 (mileage approx 38000), the vehicle stalled when my wife was accelerating to enter traffic on the interstate highway. thankfully, she was able to get out of traffic without getting hit, and she and our 18 month old are ok. the dealership is replacing the throttle body. not only was acceleration a problem, the seals on the front axle broke and spilled axle fluid on the drivers side, so the dealer is refilling the axle fluid and replacing the seals. *tr

First incident 1-3-12, took to ford dealership, they replaced the throttle body. then on 8-10-13 the car just died going up my drive way, but it cranked right back up. then on 8-11-13 the engine quit again going about 10 mph. it cranked right back up. i took it in to ford dealership on tuesday 8-13-13 and they could not find anything wrong. i , then saw on the news a report about ford escapes stalling and the throttle body issue. this example on the news happened on an expressway. fortunately they were not hurt. my question is how do i know for sure if the throttle body is bad again on my escape.? it stalled 2 times while moving, but they could not find anything. i am afraid to drive in heavy traffic. *tr

Drive south on i-95 at rush hour heading home. with no warning engine power just goes away, check engine light came on and no matter how much the gas pedal was push there was no power from engine, hurried as it slowed down to the right lane and was able to exit. shut off engine for 5 minutes started it up and all was good. 2nd time was light came on and engine just fluttered, service tech stated that the codes in computer were throttle actuator open. *tr

I first purchased this vehicle in sep 2010. the problem was when i was stopped or made a turn coasting slowly, when i attempted to accelerate the engine did not kick in for a second or two. when it did it jerked hard and felt like it slammed into gear. the dealer could never id the problem and put it off as normal. then very recently i have had the vehicle not respond to the gas pedal. it keeps the rpm's at an idling level but does not respond to the accelerator pedal-like you put it in neutral. this has happened twice now. when i shut the engine off and restart it appears to self correct. this happens while i'm driving slowly once and again when i was at a stop and tried to accelerate. i have not yet taken to a dealer yet. *tr

I bought my car new in 2009. summer of 2011, it started dying when stopped at red lights or any stops. it did this mostly when it was .25 tank of gas or less and the warmer the weather. i took it to three different mechanics and no one could figure out what was truly wrong. when they plugged it in all it says is emission problem. it happened so inconsistently it was hard to explain or diagnose. i had ford replace a vapor sensor of some sort in summer of 2012 when it was doing it again. it has never ran the same since 2011 when i first had problems. now it is losing power as i drive down the road. it loses power completely, you push the gas and there is nothing and i have to pull over or let it roll to a stop and it jerks or dies. i am taking it to ford service tomorrow and once it is fixed i am trading it in and not buying another ford again. *jb

We bought the suv used at a chevrolet dealership in. june 2010,and in october we started having issues. the vehicle wouldn't start. we had it towed to a ford dealership where they had it for 10 days and couldn't. find a problem. we drove it for approximately 7 months, 14,000 miles then it happened again ...we had it towed to another garage, and they had it a couple of days with no problems found.in june 2012 it wouldn't. start again. this time it restated after 40 minutes. it went into a safe mode, where i drove it home at 5 mph. waited 30 minutes unhooked the battery cables waited 15 minutes and hooked them back up,,and it started and ran fine for a few days then started dying while driving at any speed. took it to auto zone to read any codes...none were identified. this is happening more frequently now. is going back to ford on tuesday7/2/13. this is a very dangerous problem, that needs to be addressed. *tr

I was driving on the highway when the suv started to decelerate. i was traveling at 70mph. the rpm did not change when i pressed the gas pedal. the suv coasted to 0mph. i had to turn the car off for a few minutes. when i restarted it, it drove well enough to get to the ford dealership. diagnostics were run and i was told that it was a "hiccup" and nothing registered in the computer as an alert. i was told to return if it happened again but was told again that it was a "hiccup." the following week, it happened again as i was leaving work. i drove to the ford dealership but this time i took video. i was told it was the throttle that needed to be replaced. possibly a sensor?? i'm not sure. because the suv was out of warranty and it was a saturday, ford didn't know if my extended warranty would cover the part. they cleaned the throttle, i think, and told me to come back on monday. i drove out into the road in front of the dealership and the throttle messed up again. the car decelerated. i turned it off, waited, turned it back on and drove back and paid for ford to install the part. the car still seems to want to decelerate at times but it doesn't and there are no warning alerts/lights. again, i do have video of what actually happened the 2nd time the suv's throttle messed up. *tr

I was sitting in the bank line with my foot on the brake, waiting to get to the drive-up atm when my car suddenly accelerated. i immediately applied the brake harder to stop the car from moving forward. this happened on two other occasions. when i mentioned it to my service specialist he said he checked the car and there were no problems indicated. i have a 2009 ford escape xlt v-6. *tr

Stalling when going on gas to pass another car or up a steep hill. after releasing gas pedal quickly, car wants to still accelerates for a good three to four seconds. also engine stalls out at low speeds when making a sharp turn, like into a parking space. was told by dealer the first two are normal and the third item they could not find anything wrong. *tr

Sudden surge and slow decline in speed. pulled over turned off car, restarted and it was ok. 4 months later same thing. i have had it in 3 times for the same problem and was told it was a sensor. last time dec.2011 the mechanic told me to not fluctuate in speed since most occurrences happened on expressway. the problem still exists and it is scary but pulling over and turning off car then restarting puts it back to normal. i cannot afford to any more useless repairs nor another car. there is no speed or weather condition that appears to cause the problem. it can happen at any time without warning. *tr
