2009 ford escape 40k miles. driving down the road in normal driving conditions the vehicle started shaking slightly the idle started fluctuating and the tachometer started rapidly spiking up and down as well as a loss of acceleration. the vehicle also is stalling. shutting the engine off and restarting vehicle temporarily fixes the problem. it would appear it is the same throttle body issue everyone else is having. brought the vehicle in for service the dealer said it was not covered under warranty or my extended warranty that i purchased. *jb
Two times today, while i was driving, my 2009 ford escape stalled while i was driving. the first time i was in the middle of an intersection around noon on a six lane road, and the second time luckily i was in my neighborhood. this is ridiculously unsafe, and ford has taken no responsibility.
Engine loses power suddenly and the wrech comes on and i have to drive off to the side of the road. when i turn the car off and restart it the wrench goes off of the screen and the car drives normal for a few days before it does it again.
I was on my way to work when suddenly my vehicle would not let me accelerate. i pulled over and turned on my hazards. a little wrench light popped up, which i later looked up and realized its the throttle body. i turned off my car and started it back up and it went away. i just purchased this vehicle in march and have had no other problems with it. there were no warnings prior to this incident. i have taken good care of this vehicle and there should be no reason for the throttle body to be failing already. *tt
I was driving approx 60 mph when my car jumped down to approx 25 mph and wrench light came on. i had to coast to side of road to get off highway. when i shut the car off and restarted it i was able to drive to saftey but then it happened again and car had to be towed to the ford dealer for them to charge me 585.00 and replace the throttle body. i have read this has happened to many people and this really should be a recall.
Was accelerating when the vehicle seemed to shut off. vehicle restarted and about a month later did it again pulling away from an intersection. dealer confirmed it was a faulty throttle body and charged 100 dollars to fix. *tr
I was driving about 45 miles per hour, felt a jolt in the vehicle and acceleration began to decrease rapidly, no matter how hard i pressed on the gas. i luckily was at a low-traffic spot with a veer-off area nearby that i was able to coast over to with my four-ways on. i was able to avoid traffic. the throttle/powertrain light came on as the vehicle came to a stop. i was able to turn the vehicle off as it was lightly shaking, turn it back on with no issue, and slowly drive the vehicle about 3 miles to the nearest ford dealership. they were able to (next day) verify my fears that it was the pending recall issue, the throttle body had gone bad. they replaced it for $620 (including labor) within 2 hours and told me to hold onto my receipt because there would most likely be a recall. they told me that they've replaced many of these lately. i'm very lucky that i wasn't on the highway with many vehicles moving at a high speed around me, or else i could have been injured if i couldn't find a place to pull off. *tr
Head cylinder was cracked and was informed that it was a manufacture defect, due to car did not over heat and was in normal wear and tear conditon. *js
Driving down the highway at 60mph when car slowed down to 10-15mph. had to place my emergency lights on in order not to get hit by passing vehicles and move to the emergency lane. i had to turn off the car in order for the accelerator to work again. after the first incident the vehicle kept on stalling. took the vehicle to the dealer and it turns out its the throttle body thats malfuctioning. the warranty i purchased does not cover this type of part, i dont even have a year with this vehicle. in doing my research i find out that there has been an investigation on this vehicle on foresaid problem around the time i purchased the vehicle. the investigation is still opened. investigation number pe13-003. the ford dealership is charging me close to $700 in order to get this part fixed. they did not provide this information to me i had to look it up myself. they also did not provide me with a renter car i had to purchase one on my own. its just unfair. *tr
Sunday august 18, 2013 9:30 pm driving back from store on highway 17 wrench showed up on dash and car slowed down and came to a complete stop. i pushed the gas but nothing happened. traffic was behind me a i feared getting hit. i was able to get to the side of the road to avoid an accident. turned car off and waited for a few seconds. turned key in ignition and car started and ran just fine. 8/19/13, driving daughter to school on highway 80 vehicle did the same thing but sputtered twice. needless to say sheer pandemonium! daughter screaming and crying because highway 80 is very congested and the speed is 55 to 60 mph. managed to get to side of highway, repeated what i did the night before and car started just fine, was able to get daughter to school and myself to work. 8/20/13, it happened again. on highway 80, got to side of road and started car up again. got daughter to school and on the way to work car stopped again. started car again and got to work -- called ford and took car to shop. had to start car gain as it slowed down and would only go no more than 5 mph. car is at shop right now. waiting for ford to call me. car is under warranty as i purchased the extended warranty package. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving 45 mph, the engine stalled and the vehicle began to shake as the wrench warning icon illuminated. the vehicle was coasted off the roadway as the engine was restarted. the failure was recurring. the vehicle was not inspected or diagnosed. the manufacturer was not notified of the incident. the approximate failure mileage was 96000.
Driving down the street and the wrench light came on all of a sudden. then my car dies. put it in park then started it and as i tried to accelerate the car started to jerk then died. i repeated this till i got to the nearest repair shop and after $600 later found out it was the throttle body sensor. ford won't sell the plastic sensor by itself, you have to buy the whole aluminum unit at $400! plus labor! i will never do business with ford again! horrible quality parts. the worst part is i had my 11 year old son in the car when this happened. *tr
I was driving my 2009 ford escape limited at 60 to 55 mph when there was a lurch and sudden loss of power. i then pulled of the highway and turned off the vehicle and did an inspection to troubleshoot the problem. after 15 minutes the vehicle started back up and i drove it to our local autoparts store to get the trouble code. the code came back as p2112 : throttle actuator control system closed; explanation ecm has detected the throttle plate is at a lower angle than commanded probable cause binding throttle stuck closed. *tr
While driving the engine lost power. i was able to pull over and restarted the engine. i took it to the ford dealership today and had to have the throttle body replaced. from what i have read this is a common occurrence so why hasn't ford done anything about it? *tr
Vehicle stuck in the intersection waiting for a red light. engine light kicked on. error code p2111, throttle stuck. would been in an accident if on highway. ford needs to address this issue. *tr
My wife owns a 2009 ford escape purchased new from a dealer and there have been so many issues with the vehicle i question if there wasn?t some type of flaw in the manufacturing process or at the very least, some type failure in the quality control process. within weeks of purchasing this ford escape we had to take the vehicle back to the dealer for an oil leak and transmission problems. after 2 or 3 trips to the dealer, the oil leak was fixed but the transmission issues (2 overhauls and then replacement) continued for years. thankfully, ford covered and the dealer covered 2/3 of the cost of the second transmission overhaul and almost all of the cost for the transmission replacement. all of this work was completed at the ford dealer ship in meter georgia. nice folks, we have no issue with the dealership. approximately 6 months ago, due to low engine power and using oil, we had the vehicle worked on at a local shop. that total cost for repair was 1600 dollars. last week due to a massive oil leak we had to have the vehicle towed in a local shop. the ford escape appears to have a cracked timing belt cover. having never heard of a vehicle having a cracked timing belt cover, i decided to do some research; a cursory internet search reveals many, many complaints of 2009 ford escapes with cracked timing belt covers. for our vehicle this will make five major repairs and numerous minor issues in a vehicle not 4 years old!! there has to be some manufacturing process with these vehicles. vin [xxx] 2009 ford escape xls information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Vct solenoids and cam sensors are faulty. the vehicle stalls randomly, engine lags and exibits poor fuel mpg. the problem occured just out of warranty and upon research; i have discovered this issue is very vast with 2009-2011 ford escapes, mercury mariners, 2010-2011 ford fusion and mercury milan vehicles equipped with the 3.0l engine and built on or before 3-1-2011. my 2009 ford escape and many others vehicles should be recalled at no cost out of warranty. *tr
engine lost power while driving, began to sputter when gas pedal was engaged. vehicle was towed to nearest ford dealer. problem diagnosed as "needing throttle body," which controls air flow to engine and was "stuck in either the open or closed position." i was advised that the part was back ordered, and repairs could take several weeks.
I was merging off of an exit ramp. i slowed down so i can enter traffic, and then when i accelerated, the car hesitated/lagged before surging me forward. this problem occurs often and has almost caused an accident. sometimes it will happen when i'm completely stopped and then accelerate, or going up a hill. *tr
While entering a main highway from an exit, during acceleration the vehicle began "spluttering" and stalled. car was turned off and restarted successfully. again, leaving a parking lot onto a main highway pulling out of median begin "spluttering" and stalled. car was turned off and restarted successfully. again, stopped at a red light, when light turned green and began accelerating, car stalled in the middle of the intersection. car was restarted and took to local dealer for inspection. found to need a new throttle body. upon research, found that this has been a frequent complaint. this has the potential to result in fatalities. *tr
My 2009 ford escape xlt (this is my third escape, and the only one that has ever caused me any problem) has never accelerated as it should, from the day i drove it new off of the lot. it has always hesitated, lurched, lunged, jerked; most frequently when accelerating from a full stop or a rolling stop. it had never "limped" until at approximately 50k miles, when the throttle body failed twice while traveling at approx. 50mph (wrench symbol lit up). after having the throttle body replaced by my dealer in late june-early july 2013, the lunging, jerking, hesitating continued. on 8/8/13, when accelerating from a rolling stop, the vehicle died while attempting a "michigan left" onto a 4-lane highway (this time the battery light and service engine lights came on). if the traffic signal for oncoming traffic had not been green, i was at risk of being struck by several vehicles traveling at rates of speed up to 70mph. i was able to let the vehicle roll back into the turn lane; turned it off and then back on; but acceleration is still not operating as it should. the rpms are all over the place. i feel as though i am driving a "death trap". this is a very urgent issue and must be addressed and repaired by ford swiftly and at no cost to the consumer. i had to pay almost $600 to have the throttle body replaced (including a rental vehicle). this is unacceptable and extremely dangerous. if this problem is not satisfactorily repaired at no cost to me when i attempt to take it to my dealer again (i'm considering having it towed because i'm so afraid to drive it), i will never purchase another ford vehicle. *tr
While driving on he interstate at 73 mph, the vehicle lost all power, warning lights came on, and although the engine appeared to be running, there was no action i could take other than to pull off the roadway, turn off the car and wait. approximately 2 minutes, i attempted to restart, which it did, but ran rough at idle. i waited a few minutes longer, restarted and it performed normally for about ten miles. then it did the exact same thing over again. last year, in my wife's 2010 ford escape, the exact same problem occurred, we took it to the local ford dealership and paid $541.00 (the requested factory assistance was refused). both problems are dangerous because they problem occurs unexpectedly, at highway speed, at idle waiting for a light to change, or when pulling into traffic. no power, pull off the road, and wait to restart. *tr
While driving the wrench light and check engine light came on and the vehicle went into limp home mode and would not go faster than a couple of miles an hour. the engine was surging during this time. i could turn the vehicle off and restart it but it would immediately do the same thing again. the codes that were read from the vehicle were p2111 and p2112 and said the throttle stuck open and throttle stuck closed. *tr
As i was entering an exit ramp off i 20 eastbound the car lost all power. it happened again while merging at i75/85 in atlanta. luckily i was in the left lane and was able to pull over and restart the car. again it lost power. never did it give an error code. once again it lost power and this time it the error light. took the 3rd time before a code was shown. *tr
Driving vehicle approx. 50 mph on a clear day, approx 105 degrees in las vegas nv, the rpm's suddenly went "limp" around 900 even though the gas peddle was fully depressed. appearance of a wrench light and check engine light noted. hazard lights were engaged and the vehicle was successfully pulled to the side of the road, turned off, and restarted. ran fine like nothing happened for about a mile and a half. same issue. repeat troubleshooting. incident continued to happen for 4 more days consistently. taken into ford dealership for diagnostic and repair. mechanic contacted me after diagnostic and informed that the code for the throttle body was in error. replaced the faulty part( i kept it at my request due to the possible investigation into the matter) and the vehicle now runs fine. thank goodness the issue did not occur in a busy intersection where an accident could have potentially endangered anyone. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving 55 mph, the check engine light illuminated as the vehicle decelerated and the steering wheel tightened. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for diagnosis where it was stated that the eye bar pulley needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not notified. the approximate failure mileage was 74,000.
Driving on highway at about 65 mph. driving for about 30 min. when vehicle started to stutter and slow down. pushing the accelerator and no response -rpm and speed dropping quickly. almost run over by other vehicles on highway. wrench light came on the dash panel. car was pulled over to side of road and barely going at 900 rpm and ~ 2 mph. needed to ha e car towed. this is a very dangerous issue that needs to be fixed immediately! *tr
When driving the truck we lose acceleration and pressing the gas pedal does nothing. this has happened now 4 times. the idle sits between 800 & 1100 rpms when this happens. we took the truck to the service department at pine lake ford in laporte, indiana and they said that the throttle body needs to be replaced at a cost of $383. our extended warranty just ran out and this seems to be a recall problem when i investigated it. we are afraid this is going to cause an accident given the fact most of our driving is highway driving. why isn't ford owning up to this problem and recall this part? does someone need to be hurt or be killed before ford takes action? *tr
At full speed on the freeway the throttle body decided to go into limp mode and go to an idle only. i had to quickly pull to the side or i would have been hit. if i would have been in heavy traffic i would have caused an accident. the situation happened again today while waiting for a red light. it sounds like that is being investigated already. *tr
I was driving 35 mph in town when vehicle seemed to be losing power. i pulled over to the side of the road. the engine was running at a very rough idle . i tried to accelerate but it would barely move. i turned the engine off and restarted it . it did the same thing, no acceleration. i did this several times before it would run properly. it seemed rather jerky while driving. i was about 10 miles from home when this happened. on the way home i was driving at 55 mph and it died completely. the check engine light came on this time. i got it restarted and made it home. i have a code reader at my house. i checked and codes p2111 and p2112 were stored in the computer. i checked with a mechanic and was told the codes relate to the throttle body assembly. i was going to have it repaired but the mechanic told me that the part is on national back order. this is my only vehicle and i' m afraid to drive. what can i do. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated while driving various speeds, there was a sudden loss of engine power with the illumination of the wrench symbol. upon restarting, the vehicle it functioned normally but the failure recurred before reaching his destination. the failure was not diagnosed nor was the vehicle repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 42,000.
This is the 3rd time this problem happened. i'm driving normally, at a constant speed, and all of a sudden, wrench light comes on, rpms do weird things, gas pedal doesn't do anything, putting it in neutral in a drift downspeed does nothing, park does nothing. putting it in park and shutting the engine, and starting again makes the light go away and run fine again. this is a huge safety concern as i travel with young children and this will happen with no warning at all. very disappointed ford will not recall and fix this very common problem. *tr
I was on the highway going around 60 mph. the vehicle seemed to die.i pulled over and realized it was still running, but would only idle and did not respond to pressing the gas pedal. i restarted the engine and drove about 50 miles without further incident, but engine warning light remained on. the next day, the engine warning light was on when i started the vehicle, and it lost power immediately. i restarted it and within driving 5 miles it " died" over 15 times. i attempted to drive it one more time and it repeated the same problem 3 times before i made it to the end of my block..i haven't driven it since. *tr
The engine sputters and stalls while driving. it has done this 10 or more times in the last two weeks. the yellow wrench symbol is displayed on the instrument panel. after getting to the side of the road and switching the car off and back on, the car will run fine for a few miles - sometimes for a day or two. after talking with a couple ford dealers, i was told that this is a common problem with the throttle body and there was no throttle body's available to fix the problem. there was a two to three month backorder for the part. if i keep driving the car it will be a matter of time before the car will cause an accident. if this is a known problem ford should be responsible for the repair. *tr
Driving on interstate and lost power with no warning. went into "limp home mode, ford's safety feature, ha ha". managed to maneuver to the side of the road without getting run over, but there were a lot of horn blowing and upset people behind me. once on the side of the road, shut off engine and cranked right back up. quit again before arriving at home on the same trip and several other times. very dangerous situation. does someone have to die before ford will recall a manufacturing defect? *tr
Car seems to loose power. although the engine is still running it seems to not be able to accelerate or move. i have to turn on my blinkers and coast to a safe place and stop and restart my engine. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving approximately 45 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact mentioned that the failure occurred intermittently. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the failure was unable to be replicated. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 39,000 and the current mileage was 39,500.
While driving on the beltline, the vehicle stopped responding to the accelerator. i put on hazard lights, changed two lanes to get to the right-hand shoulder, and stopped. fortunately the traffic was not heavy at the time (9:30pm). restarting the vehicle fixed the problem, and i was able to drive home. however due to the safety hazard, i have not driven it since. *tr
2009 ford escape has a very dangerous defect with its throttle body component. while driving during normal operation, the vehicle will go into limp mode without warning. a yellow wrench appears in the console indicating a maintenance problem. the engine will reduce to idle speed, the foot accelerator is inoperable during this incident. when in the idle mode, the vehicle speed is reduced to about 5 mph. the vehicle has to be turned off, then restarted.in order to reboot the system. the first two incidents happened on consecutive days. a week later, it happened again. today, it happened 4 times, once on the busy interstate highway. ford claims this is a common problem, therefore the replacement part is on back-order. i ordered my part (express) thru the local ford dealership about a month ago and top date the part has not arrived. ford is unable to give n estimated arrival date of the replacement part. *tr
Vehicle looses power and must pull to the side of the road. the engine continues to run roughly but no power goes to the wheels. once stopped i turn vehicle off for a minute. once restarted the vehicle seems to run okay. but it happened 3 times on 7/8/2013. the code is p2111. i took it to the dealer and the part is on back order so i do not know when this will be resolved. this is my only car and i feel it is unsafe. according to your websight there are 2 action reports. #s pe13003 & dp12006. and 2 technical service bulletins #s 09-23-5 & 10-21-6. *tr
As i was driving my escape it began to shake and i was no longer able to accelerate. i had to turn the engine off, sit for a minute and then restart it. i had to do this every half mile on my drive home to get my car home. i pulled over to the side of the road and called for assistance and i had someone follow me home. i had to have it towed to the dealership. they told me it was the electric throttle body. after having it for two weeks they told me i would have to wait another month for the part as it was back ordered from ford. as soon as i requested a rental car, the part automatically appeared. over $400 worth of work. *jb
I was driving on the highway when suddenly the car made a very hard jerk; it felt like the engine fell to the ground, and then no power when i put my foot on the gas peddle. i coasted to the side of the road which put me at the end of an entrance ramp onto the highway. i was so scared because of where my car ended up. i waited a few minutes and turned the car back on and drove about 30 ft and then the same thing happened... the terrible jerk and no power. i pulled over and waited for at least one hour for a tow truck. i am thankful it was not dark out. i was told by the ford dealer that it was the throttle body. i have seen many reports on line of the same defective part. besides this being a costly experience [if you do not have a warranty] it is very dangerous when this part goes out. this should definitely be a recalled item and people reimbursed for having to have this part replaced. *tr
While driving at various speeds, conditions, the wrench warning light appears and the car becomes limp and non responsive. engine was running hard. had to turn off vehicle and restart (which was difficult). this occurred again within minutes, this time with the check engine light coming on. went directly to repair shop and had it checked. was told that error code p2111 was being shown. the throttle body was cleaned and the gas pedal assembly was replaced. the next day, the same problems continued. i am scared to drive this car, especially with my children in it as i am worried it will die while pulling out in traffic or that someone will rear end us. *tr
Car goes into limp mode and you have to get off of highway and turn off car and restart to reset computer. this works for about 10 miles and then it starts all over again. my dealership has the car and is replacing the throttle body so we can drive the car and not be in danger. *tr
I was driving down the highway and the gas pedal stopped working and my car wouldn't go i pulled off the road and turned my car off. i restarted it and continued to drive it did it again and i went to the dealership, it did it all the way there i had to keep pulling over and restarting. the code came up throttle stuck open. i am not waiting for a new throttle body that is on back order and will take around 5-8 days, it is day 7 and the part is still not there. *tr
Vehicle randomly slips into limp-home mode at slow speeds and highway speeds. the wrench light turns on and the accelerator is non-responsive. if the vehicle is put into park and the engine is shift off, it restarts with no problem...until a random time further down the road. monday it happened 5 times; tuesday it happened 3 times. *tr
The electronic throttle body on my 2009 ford escape failed while i was traveling at a high rate of speed on the highway causing my engine shut down. *tr
I was driving on the freeway going 70 mph. the gas pedal suddenly went all the way to the floor but the car was getting no power. luckily the freeway was not crowded and we were able to coast to the side of the freeway. i turned the car off and restarted it and the pedal seemed to be working. but 30 miles later it happened again. i brought the car to the ford dealership where they said the problem was the throttle body. the part is on back order for 3 weeks. *tr
About a year to year and a half ago i lost all forward motion while driving, could not get the car to respond to the accelerator, and the "wrench" light came on. i made it to the side of the road and a few minutes later it started it right up. this happened several times over a couple of weeks period, i took it to our ford house but they could not find any issues. i then took it to my local mechanic and he said he thought it was a throttle issue but couldn't find the exact problem, so he suggested we take it back to the ford house and let them "put it on the computer" and look again. i did but they said although they unplugged and reconnected several things they still could not find anything wrong. i didn't have any problems for a few months and now it has started happening again, 5 times in the last 2 weeks. now it sputters some when i restart it but so far it has started. i have a toddler and depend on my car to get us around and this is a very real safety concern. getting rear-ended or run over while trying to get off the road is a huge fear. it sounds like when i take it back to the ford house, and i will, the wait on the part will still mean i'll be driving an unsafe vehicle for a while .ford needs to pay attention before there is a fatality and then the whole world will know how much they care about their customers. *tr
I was just pulling away from a drive thru window when the "wrench" light came on, and the truck stopped moving forward as if it had been shifted into neutral, which it hadn't been. i turned off the vehicle and waited a few moments and restarted it and it was running fine, with no further lights being illuminated on the dash. this same problem happened again approx 3 weeks later, although this time i was going approx. 20 mph, having just accelerated from a stop sign. the wrench light came on, but this time the engine light also came on, and then the truck lost power. i turned the engine off, waited a few moments and restarted it. this time, however, the engine light did not go off, so i took it to an auto parts store to read the computer. they found diagnostic code p2111, throttle body stuck open. after a few hours of sitting in my parking lot at work, when i started the vehicle there were no lights illuminated on the dash, and per the dealer's service department, the computer had reset itself. *tr
