On average, the 2009 Ford Escape starts to “feel” problems with the VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL and its various aspects after 72 854 miles.

Components Affected by VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL Issues

We have classified the 275 complaints from 2009 Ford Escape about VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL into the following categories.

ACCELERATOR PEDAL 4

Recently reported VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL problems on 2009 Ford Escape

Car surged then stalled on interstate 65mph. 2nd time at 40mph on county hwy. throttle body bad-part on national backorder 2 week delay. *tr

While driving the car slowed down to a stand still without removing my foot from the gas peddle. the check engine and power train/throttle body lights came on. the car was towed to a dealership where they determined that the throttle body was the cause of the problem and needs to be completely replaced. *tr

While driving on the beltline, the vehicle stopped responding to the accelerator. i put on hazard lights, changed two lanes to get to the right-hand shoulder, and stopped. fortunately the traffic was not heavy at the time (9:30pm). restarting the vehicle fixed the problem, and i was able to drive home. however due to the safety hazard, i have not driven it since. *tr

Accelerated to enter freeway, aprox 55 mph, and then the vehicle acted like it was not getting any gas. it pulled itself along at idle. i stopped, shut the vehicle off and restarted it with no problems afterwards. i had it scanned a few minutes later and the stored code was p2111. etb (electronic throttle body) stuck open/closed. *tr

Vehicle "jerked" and lost all throttle. open ended wrench light came on in the instrument cluster. luckily was able to coast into small service center who scanned the computer and it had the faulty p2111 code (throttle actuator control system stuck open). code was cleared and car restarted. died another 6 times on the way home, each time restarting after turning the key off. i see that this is currently under investigation and wanted to bring yet another instance to your attention. if this would of happened on the interstate or a large left hand turn lane during rush hour it wouldn't have been pretty. *tr

2009 ford escape has a very dangerous defect with its throttle body component. while driving during normal operation, the vehicle will go into limp mode without warning. a yellow wrench appears in the console indicating a maintenance problem. the engine will reduce to idle speed, the foot accelerator is inoperable during this incident. when in the idle mode, the vehicle speed is reduced to about 5 mph. the vehicle has to be turned off, then restarted.in order to reboot the system. the first two incidents happened on consecutive days. a week later, it happened again. today, it happened 4 times, once on the busy interstate highway. ford claims this is a common problem, therefore the replacement part is on back-order. i ordered my part (express) thru the local ford dealership about a month ago and top date the part has not arrived. ford is unable to give n estimated arrival date of the replacement part. *tr

While driving down the road, pressed the gas pedal and got no response (no acceleration) tried several more times and still had no response as the vehicle continued to slow down. fortunately, there was very little traffic and i was able to pull over on a side street; however, this was potentially extremely dangerous had it happened while i was on a freeway or in heavy traffic. once i turned the vehicle off and restarted it, everything was working again. took my car to the dealership who then had to replace the throttle body, which was on back order due to this being a common problem with my vehicle. *tr

While driving up a hill, i let my foot off the gas and when i tried to press gas, my engine stalled and died. when hooked up to diagnostic to see why my suv keeps dying when idle, the code was "p2112" throttle actuator control system stuck closed. *tr

While driving, the vehicle stopped accelerating, the check engine light came on and car began to idle. i turned it off and back on five minutes later and it accelerated for 1/4 of a mile before doing the same thing again. i turned it off and back on and drove it straight to my mechanic. after running diagnostics it was determined to be the throttle body as well as the processor. *tr

As i was driving my escape it began to shake and i was no longer able to accelerate. i had to turn the engine off, sit for a minute and then restart it. i had to do this every half mile on my drive home to get my car home. i pulled over to the side of the road and called for assistance and i had someone follow me home. i had to have it towed to the dealership. they told me it was the electric throttle body. after having it for two weeks they told me i would have to wait another month for the part as it was back ordered from ford. as soon as i requested a rental car, the part automatically appeared. over $400 worth of work. *jb

I was driving on the highway when suddenly the car made a very hard jerk; it felt like the engine fell to the ground, and then no power when i put my foot on the gas peddle. i coasted to the side of the road which put me at the end of an entrance ramp onto the highway. i was so scared because of where my car ended up. i waited a few minutes and turned the car back on and drove about 30 ft and then the same thing happened... the terrible jerk and no power. i pulled over and waited for at least one hour for a tow truck. i am thankful it was not dark out. i was told by the ford dealer that it was the throttle body. i have seen many reports on line of the same defective part. besides this being a costly experience [if you do not have a warranty] it is very dangerous when this part goes out. this should definitely be a recalled item and people reimbursed for having to have this part replaced. *tr

While driving at various speeds, conditions, the wrench warning light appears and the car becomes limp and non responsive. engine was running hard. had to turn off vehicle and restart (which was difficult). this occurred again within minutes, this time with the check engine light coming on. went directly to repair shop and had it checked. was told that error code p2111 was being shown. the throttle body was cleaned and the gas pedal assembly was replaced. the next day, the same problems continued. i am scared to drive this car, especially with my children in it as i am worried it will die while pulling out in traffic or that someone will rear end us. *tr

Car goes into limp mode and you have to get off of highway and turn off car and restart to reset computer. this works for about 10 miles and then it starts all over again. my dealership has the car and is replacing the throttle body so we can drive the car and not be in danger. *tr

I was driving down the highway and the gas pedal stopped working and my car wouldn't go i pulled off the road and turned my car off. i restarted it and continued to drive it did it again and i went to the dealership, it did it all the way there i had to keep pulling over and restarting. the code came up throttle stuck open. i am not waiting for a new throttle body that is on back order and will take around 5-8 days, it is day 7 and the part is still not there. *tr

While driving on i55 in chicago going 60 mph the gas peddle went soft. there was no accretion, i was force to move to the shoulder. i turned the car off and then on and it ran fine for 20 miles then the same thing happened again, and then again. i was able to get my vehicle to the ford dealer who told me it was the throttle body and it would take 2 weeks to have a replacement part. *tr

Car has throttle body issues which is now common - where is the recall? *tr

The electronic throttle body on my 2009 ford escape failed causing my car to stall at a high speed and pull over to the side of a busy highway. *tr

The electronic throttle body on my 2009 ford escape failed while i was traveling at a high rate of speed on the highway causing my engine shut down. *tr

I was driving on the freeway going 70 mph. the gas pedal suddenly went all the way to the floor but the car was getting no power. luckily the freeway was not crowded and we were able to coast to the side of the freeway. i turned the car off and restarted it and the pedal seemed to be working. but 30 miles later it happened again. i brought the car to the ford dealership where they said the problem was the throttle body. the part is on back order for 3 weeks. *tr

Due to throttle body failure at highway speed, engine became unresponsive to attempts to keep speed. engine did idle providing power steering and brake operation. engine was successfully restarted and vehicle taken to dealer shop. on way to shop, failure occurred on busy 4 lane street at 45 mph. getting to shoulder was awkward but successful. parts took 11 days to get to dealer service. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving 15 mph, the vehicle stalled. the failure recurred twice with the illumination of the check engine light. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where it was stated that the throttle needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired and the manufacturer was not notified. the approximate failure mileage was 57,000. *tr

While driving at normal speeds the car completely lost acceleration and the accelerator became unresponsive. the check engine light came on and the car reduced to idle. after placing the car in neutral and rolling to a stop the car was turned off and i waited for 5 minutes. once restarted the car ran normally but continued to have the problem with no warning. when taken to the dealership they stated it was a faulty throttle body assembly. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving approximately 10 mph, the vehicle stalled with the illumination of the wrench warning icon. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the electronic throttle body needed to be replaced but the parts were not available. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure and current mileage was 47,000. *tr

While traveling at 60 mph on the highway i suddenly lost all power. i coasted the car across a lane of traffic to the right lane of the highway. i could not pull out of traffic because this part of the highway has no shoulder and is bordered by a concrete wall or fence. the right-lane traffic came to a stop while i restarted the car. after i restarted the car, i proceeded down the freeway, but before i arrived at the next exit, the car stalled again. i feared for my safety and for the safety of other drivers. i experienced a similar incident on 6/20/13 and reported it to safercar.gov. at that time, i took my car to the local ford dealer who services my car. the dealer stated that the problem is related to the throttle body. the problem is so common to ford escapes that there is a 3 week backlog for ordering a replacement part. in the meantime, the dealer reprogrammed the pcm (power control module?) ' for $118 ' as a temporary fix. apparently, the 'fix' was very temporary. my car is too dangerous to be driven until the throttle body is replaced. for the safety of myself and other drivers, i cannot risk driving the car to work. how many lives must be placed at risk before a recall is issued to correct this defect? *tr

I was driving and came to a stop sign, turned left and pressed the gas and my car wouldn't go, all lights and gauges were normal but the gas pedal all the way to the floor wouldn't make the car go so i coasted off to the shoulder and almost made it out of the road. i tried calling several tow truck company's for roadside assistance and didn't get an answer. after about 20 mins, i tried cranking the car. all parts ran normal, all gauges normal, so i drove it to work and then called the ford dealership where they told me that is was the throttle body. *tr

I was driving home from work and had driven about 3.5 miles when i was turning left going about 10-15 mph. my car suddenly lost acceleration and the wrench illuminated. i panic because i was on a street where there was no area to pull off the road. i looked in the rearview mirror to make sure that there were no other cars behind me and put on my hazard lights and turned off the engine. after about 30 seconds i turned the engine over and it sputtered to life, but then the wrench warning light illuminated again and i could not accelerate. cars were coming behind me and i tried my best to give them room to drive by, which was hard as the right side of the street was bumper to bumper with parked cars. after the cars passed me, i turned off the engine again and waited about 30-45 seconds and the engine came to life and i was able to drive home without another incident. *tr

Driving in town and it just had nothing... pushed on accelerator and it would not do anything. car did not stall out, sounded like it was going to but didn't. still had all power just would not move when giving it gas. ***took to mechanic error number shows bad throttle body part*** *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that she attempted to accelerate but the accelerator pedal failed to respond. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was found that the throttle body had failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was 33,850.

While traveling at 45 mph on a busy road, the engine stopped responding to the accelerator and began decelerating. the throttle/power-train warning light was activated. i had to pull over the the shoulder of the road to avoid being hit by other traffic. the car began jerking forward as though it was trying to accelerate on its own. i shut off the engine for a minute and once i restarted the car, the warning light was no longer illuminated. the next day (6/23/2013) i drove to my closest ford dealer and they diagnosed the problem as a faulty throttle body. the service advisor informed me that the part was currently backordered and that they had 15 other ford vehicles currently waiting for inventory to arrive. the cost of repair is $473. the mechanic cleaned out the carbon from my throttle body as a temporary fix until the part arrived. two days later (6/25/2013), as i was driving 55 mph, the same problem occured and i was forced to pull over and restart my vehicle. while driving back to the ford dealership the next morning to get a rental car, my car stopped responding as i was crossing train tracks (and i was able to restart the vehicle). now my car is currenly sitting at the ford dealership and i am paying an additional $33 a day for a rental car while i wait for the part to arrive (estimated to be 10-13 days). nhtsa action # dp12006. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving 50 mph, the vehicle decelerated independently with the illumination of the wrench warning icon. the contact stated that the failure had occurred several times prior to the recent failure. the vehicle was taken the dealer, who diagnosed that the throttle body was defective and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was repaired. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 54,000 and the current mileage was 55,000. *tr

Electronic throttle body circuit board failed (ford mechanic's diagnosis) while approaching a traffic light. car had been having constant speed surges while driving in 3-4 gear powerband and was serviced. everything seemed fine until a couple of weeks later when the throttle became unresponsive. ford is replacing the tb assembly with what i fear is the exact same part; week and a half wait for the part, no loner car, no warranty coverage. *tr

On sunday, june 16, 2013, i was driving near topeka, kansas, in a suburban area with my wife, 5 year old daughter & 6 month old son in our 2009 ford escape. while driving approximately 25 mph the vehicle stalled while driving. luckily we were not on a high traffic street so we were able to pull over to the side of the road, shut off the vehicle, and restart the car successfully. the escape continued on without issue back home to lawrence, kansas. the vehicle was driven around lawrence without any issue until friday, june 21, 2013. on this date my wife had to commute from lawrence to kansas city, kansas, for work-related training. on her trip to kansas city (kc) the vehicle stalled while driving at highway speed (60+ mph). she was successful restarting the vehicle but it stalled once again while in kc. she drove the escape to shawnee mission ford to see if diagnostics could be run on the vehicle, but there was not enough time left in the day to perform the full diagnostics. a service technician test-drove the vehicle and while driving it stalled once again. because carseats for our two children were located in the escape, my wife had to drive from kc back to lawrence so our family would have these items on hand. while driving from kc to lawrence the vehicle stalled once again at highway speed (60+ mph). once back in lawrence the vehicle was dropped off at laird noller ford, and on saturday, june 22, 2013, it was determined by their service staff that the throttle body was defective. this part is currently on national backorder, so we could be without our primary family vehicle for more than 3 weeks. this will result in hardship on the family and could result in major financial costs if a rental vehicle is needed for the entire period we are without our primary family vehicle and could have resulted in serious injury or death as a result of this defect. *tr

On 5 different occasions while driving anywhere from starting from a stop light to traveling up to 70 mph on a major interstate my ford escape has suddenly lost power. the engine does not lock up, just all power is lost. i press the accelerator and there is no revving of engine. i have been able to get the car to a stop, but it will start to jerk and stall. finally i turn it off, then restart it but it i having difficulty in starting. thus far i have spent $240 for a tow and have had 3 mechanics investigate, one had no idea but had "heard about throttle body problems", a second told me to take it to the dealership and charged about $40 to clean the throttle body. the dealership has told me its the throttle body and will be charging about $365 to replace. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated while driving approximately 50 mph, the vehicle stalled and the check engine warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the electronic throttle body needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 76,000. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that he attempted to accelerate but the vehicle would not respond and would not gain power. the vehicle was restarted and the vehicle functioned properly. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection and they stated that the throttle body needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 40,000.

P2111 error per computer - throttle actuator stuck open. vehicle will not accelerate and engine shakes violently, feels like it wants to stall, but does not. needs to be shut off and restarted to accelerate again. problem has now happened 6 times in the last 2 days. *tr

This has happened to me on 8 occasions in rapid succession. in all instances, i am driving along as usual, and all of a sudden, my accelerator becomes non-responsive. the car is still running, but i am quickly losing speed, i cannot accelerate, and the engine does not rev when i press on the accelerator. i must stop the car, put it in park, turn it off, and restart the car in order to "fix" the problem and continue driving. simply putting the car in neutral, turning it off and restarting it will not remedy the situation. *tr

As i was driving home from work, my vehicle stopped moving. i pressed on the gas, but it would not accelerate. i had to pull over and turn my vehicle off. when i restarted it, it came on, but there was a wrench light that appeared. i was able to make it home, but when i tried to restart it, it would not move. *tr

At or about 2:30pm on sunday, june 9, 2013, the identified vehicle was being operated on a limited-access state highway at or around the posted speed limit of 70 mph. the vehicle took an exit ramp onto the frontage road and decelerated to posted speed limit of 50 mph. without warning or any prior indication, the vehicle entered the ford-defined "limp home mode," which included a loss of engine power (governed to approximated 900 rpm in second gear), and the vehicle experienced rapid deceleration to approximately 10 mph on the high-speed three-lane roadway with medium to medium-heavy traffic. upon pulling the vehicle to safety in a parking lot, the vehicle experienced rough idling and the dashboard illuminated a "throttle control/power train fault" warning light. upon cycling the engine off and on, engine ignition took longer than typical to start by several seconds, but appeared to otherwise function properly. upon re-entering the roadway, an experience similar to that described above occurred after shifting to third gear. after-market diagnostic computer indicates the vehicle has a p2112, "throttle actuator control stuck closed," code. engine was cycled and entry to roadway was attempted again; similar episode occurred when shifting to third gear. vehicle was towed to a ford dealership for service, which is pending at the time of this report. *tr

Driving and engine lost power check engine light on pulled code 2112. *tr

While driving down the road at approximately 70 mph all of a sudden i had no throttle control all i was doing was coasting on the momentum that i had at that moment. i happened to coast into a gas station had to get the car towed to a local dealer. this was not covered by warranty on monday so i had to pay almost $500 for the repairs. had this happen on a busy interstate it could've been a lot worse than it was. *tr

While driving the engine suddenly would no longer respond to the gas pedal and would not accelerate. after pulling over and restarting the car, the problem went away. however, after a few days the problem happened twice more, this time with the engine completely shutting off while idling at a stop light and while driving slowly down a neighborhood street. the garage determined there to be a problem with the throttle body and it needed to be replaced. *tr

I accelerated from a stopped position and in approximately 100 feet the accelerator stop working. the engine did not die but the vehicle would only idle at a slow pace. i stopped the car, put in park, turned off the engine and then restarted. the accelerator worked at that time and i continued onto the highway with no problem. i was traveling at 75 mph for about 10 miles when the accelerator stopped working again and the vehicle slowed to an idle. i repeated the same process as before, stop, put in park, turned off engine and restarted. the accelerator worked again and i continued on 10 miles and made it home. the next available day the vehicle was taken to the ford dealership. i experienced (2) of the same scenerios listed above along my 6 mile route to the dealership. after (2) days the problem was diagnosed as a defective throttle body with a $574 price tag to repair. the service person stated this was not covered under warranty or a recall item. she then stated that the part was on a "national backorder" and would not be available for another month. this leads me to believe this is happening alot!! i have read several articles on the internet about this same type of issue happening to other ford escapes, varying years and was surprised there has not been a recall. the incident started when i was out of town, headed toward home at approimately 11:00 pm. it could have been an even more dangerous situation if i had lost power trying to turn across traffic or was on a much busier highway when this happened. i hope others are aware of this website. *tr

I was driving on a residential street at 30mph, when i lost speed control. the car lunged forward and while it was still on(the engine), i could not accelerate. i coasted into a gas station and put the car in park. the engine was at a very low idle and it sounded as if it were going to cut off. i also got the check engine light on the left side of the dash. a guy looked under the hood, there was no smoke, nothing leaking, or anything. he turned the car off, then back on and the light was gone and i could drive it again. i was going to take it out to westway ford and it did it again before i got there. they told me they could not look at the code because when i turned the car off i reset it. they did inform me however that it was most likely the throttle body and among other things that they recommended it would cost me $1286.00 to fix. do not have that kind of money! *tr

Electronic throttle body failure - 2009 ford escape [xxx] first time: driving 35 mph and all of a sudden nothing...no power, no acceleration. luckily i was not rear ended when the vehicle lost power. i had to coast into a parking lot, shut off the truck for 5 minutes, restart and drove home which was less than 1 mile away. next day ran okay, next day no power, no acceleration. took to dealer on june 7, 2013 and they did a diagnostic test and gas fuel induction flush because the electronic throttle body part was unavailable for replacement. second/third time: leaving for vacation. got about 5 miles from home and nothing, no power, no acceleration. coasted into a parking lot and the car lurched...luckily i had my foot on the brake. took vehicle to dealer and the truck is still there because they do not have the part to fix it. it has been parked at the dealership waiting for the electronic throttle body part to fix the issue for over a week. so far i have spend $278.37 for a diagnostic test and gas fuel induction flush and still have an unsafe vehicle due to an electronic throttle body failure. ford you need to fix this and reimburse our expenses related to this dangerous safety issue. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Lost power while driving, applied pressure to the accelerator and nothing.after a year of intermittent problems with this i took it into ford dealership and they diagnosed a faulty throttle body....trouble code p 2111 .diagnostic trouble codes (dtc) p2111, throttle body stuck open. its cost me us$275. i think ford must be assume the cost because is car failure from fabric. let me know about the recall for the nhtsa action number : dp12006. *tr

While driving on major thorough fair at a high rate of speed, the vehicle lost all speed. went to limp mode. the gas pedal did not work. i pulled over to the emergency lane and restarted the vehicle and all was fine. this exact same thing happened again later that same day. i took the vehicle to a ford dealer and they confirmed it was the throttle body assembly. they could not guarantee the vehicle was safe to drive. nor could they fix it. this was due to the fact the ford was not currently releasing the part. *tr

Car intermittently stalled while driving at speeds from 1-30 mph or following a stop. this continued to increase to the point that the car stalled every few feet. car had to be towed to ford dealer for throttle body replacement and reprogram. dealer charge for labor and parts was $ 732.00. *tr

Was driving then felt "back fire" then the wrench light and check engine light came on and i couldn't accelerate at all. never lost control just hit brakes to turn on road and pull over. turned off car and restarted it and revved the engine. went another mile and it did the same thing again. took it to a local mechanic to have it checked out because i thought maybe i had gotten bad gas but was told it was the throttle body. taking it too dealership friday june 6th. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that the throttle body needed to be replaced however, the dealer stated that the part was not available because it was being re-manufactured. the contact did not call the manufacturer. the failure mileage was 76,000. updated 07/23/13*lj
