I was driving my car to work in a busy intersection the car lost the ability to move but not the power car came to a stop shut off car and it started but was riding rough. this happened two more times on my way home . was almost rear ended. my brother who has been a certified mechanic for thirty yeas diagnosed the car and it said throttle body valve stuck open.i did not get hurt but if i had been on a highway or in faster traffic i could have. i think others should be warned. i have never received anything from monaco ford in glastonbury where i bought the car the and my address is the same as when i bought it new. my brother is replacing the part for me . *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. when refueling the vehicle, the fuel pump nozzle was difficult to remove. in addition, the check fuel and check engine warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to shamaley ford (11301 gateway blvd w, el paso, tx 79936, (915) 591-8600) where it was diagnosed that the fuel hose for the fuel tank needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 88,000.
While driving down the road at 45 mph the car lost power and began to coast to a stop even with the gas peddle to the floor. *tr
Driving when suddenly check engine light flashed, battery light, and oil light all blinked after which engine was running but unable to accelerate. was able to pull off to side of road placed in park again tried to rev engine nothing happened. turned car off then turned back on and car ran as usual check engine light remains on taking to dealership tomorrow. *tr
Going to left turn lane. no response from accelerator. engine still running. switched of, then switched back on.car running again. got home, it switched of again.then same as 1st time. *tr
It laid over and was powerless. it also was sputtering before the car laid over. *tr
Car lost power. pulled off to side of road, engine would idle only. throttle body had gone bad. *tr
While coming to a stop at a major intersection with a car in front of me, my 2009 ford escape suddenly accelerated and would not stop, despite my frantic efforts to brake the car; i swerved to my right, went through 6 inches of snow on grass curb and then went up a 5 ft. ice bank, where my wheels jammed in the ice and i stopped, sitting at nearly a 45 degree angle, 5 ft. above the road. my front bumper was mangled in the ice bank and my passenger-side mirror was broken off by a stop sign. if not for the snow bank, i would have continued into the very busy intersection, where i and other drivers would have undoubtedly been injured or killed. i want to emphasize that despite hitting the brake, the car with unintended acceleration problem, did not stop, it kept going until hitting the snow-ice bank. *tr
This was the third incident, vehicle stops running for no apparent reason, wrench light illuminates... power lost in engine. after stop, engine sometimes starts, sometimes requires longer wait time to start... vehicle still under 5 year 50 k warranty, taken to ford dealership.... they want $ 440 to fix the problem.... before someone gets killed in this vehicle. *tr
My car lost acceleration in an intersection going about 15 mph. the engine was running slow and rough. the throttle had no effect on engine speed. after about 10 minutes of rough idling, the vehicle was turned off and i was then able to immediately restart the engine and it was able to drive home. this appears to be a known fault with the ford escape and could result in accidents. my understanding is that this is a known design problem with the throttle control system on the escape. *tr
I was on hov lane on lie driving to my parents. as i was coming off to reg lane, my engine stalled. fortunately, the other car was far away able to stop. i changed gear into park and restarted the car. *tr
While driving on monday 11/18/13 my wife was stopping then went to accelerate and the vehicle stalled. upon turning it off it restarted just fine. this happen 3 more times from then to tuesday evening. i drove it to work wednesday 11/20/13 and while accelerating on to hwy 94 the vehicle stalled. it did hesitate upon restarting but started and ran. wednesday evening on our way home doing approx 30mph the vehicle stalled and again hesitated to start but did and ran ok. thursday morning 11/21/13 while on my way to work i was at cruising speed doing approx 60mph on hwy 94 the vehicle stalled. it hesitated to restart again but started after leaving the vehicle off for a few seconds. *tr
Traveling at approx 5-10 miles an hour. pulling out of stop sign. vehicle without warning felt like it stalled. could not accelerate. i coasted to curb and put in park. a warning light on dashboard showed a yellow wrench. i turned car off. waited 30 seconds. started and light was off, car normal. took to dealer. diagnostic code said electronic throttle. did not have fixed immediately. next day did it two times in less than five miles. now engine light on second time of occurrence. i am afraid to drive. could be on highway. could pull out in front of on coming cars and it stalls. get broadsided. *tr
While driving the vehicle lost power and wrench light came on. when came to a stop the vehicle ran rough at idle and surged. car taken immediately to ford and they misdiagnosed. after that it continued to do it multiple times on city streets and interstates. the car would have no power and the engine would not accelerate when i would step on gas. had to shut the engine off and restart to make anything work. after that i took it to ford again. this time they replaced throttle body-air intake and also throttle body and motor assembly. *tr
Was pulling out of gas station to merge onto busy street, car began to roll forward upon acceleration then lost all response and lurched into road stopping there. engine shut off and check engine light came on. attempted to restart vehicle, car would rev but not respond with any acceleration. during this time incredibly loud harsh shifting occurred , sounded as though transmission fell out of car. dealership replaced defective throttle body, currently still investigating transmission issues. *tr
All the sudden the gas pedal didn't do anything when i pressed it and my vehicle slowed to a dangerous speed for the road i was on forcing vehicles to swerve around to miss hitting me. the wrench light also came on. i was able to eventually pull over and turn my vehicle off and restart it. after restarting it the gas pedal seemed to work fine. i took it into the dealership and they said it was the throttle body and it needed replaced. *tr
Initially driving down the road at approximately 55 mph and the check engine light came on and the vehicle went into a stall. i lost all power even though the engine was sputtering. i pulled over and turned the vehicle off and restarted it. i lost power about 2 more times on a 20 mile trip. this has since happened during every drive on various distances. sometimes at highway speeds and sometimes from a standstill. *tr
Vehicle enters limp mode and all power is lost, engine starts to stutter and tachometer jumps, wrench light (power-train) comes on. 3 times in 1 week. mph = 60, 45, 30. avoided accident and pulled over. restarted vehicle and back to normal. no check engine light or codes stored. dealer states they cannot diagnose unless they can recreate the problem. danger of rear ending, t-bones upon left turns, and intersection pileups. *tr
While driving the vehicle at around 50 mph it lost all reaction to the accelerator and coasted to a stop while in heavy traffic. i turned the car off and waited 5 minutes, then started it again and began to drive. within seconds the vehicle repeated the incident. i managed to get it into my driveway after repeated stops and restarts of the engine. *tr
When driving on a busy 4 lane road, the vehicle suddenly lost fuel power and began creeping down the road at less than 5 km/h the wrench light was flashing and it was a few hundred meters to the nearest side street, fortunately i was able to make it to the side street without getting struck by traffic moving 60 km/h faster than i was, i thought that the computer may have had a one time failure but this happened again 3 days after with my young son in the back seat. that was monday oct 14 2013, i am super mad at ford for not recalling this throttle body problem already it seems like a constant point of failure and it is unsafe to drive these cars when this is happening. *tr
As i was driving and the cruise control was set the road i was traveling had slight hills. it seems as though when the car went to down shift and speed up is when it lost power and went into limp mode. the last occurrence was on 10-17-13 while i was driving on a flat road. i had to brake for traffic when i went to accelerate is when it lost power and went into limp mode. *tr
While driving on the highway, at approximately 65 mph, the vehicle bucked and instantaneously slowed down and was unable to accelerate. at that moment when the vehicle bucked the dash indicator (a wrench) came on showing the problem being the throttle control/powertrain. i was on the highway in the middle lane, in traffic when i lost the ability to accelerate and was luckily able to navigate to the right and coast to the exit that was less than a quarter mile from the incident. i placed it into park and it sputtered just prior to turning off the vehicle completely. after waiting about 10 minutes i then restarted the vehicle and the dash indicator did not come on, i therefore proceeded and drove it home. because this occurred late evening i was not able to contact the dealer until the following day. *tr
I was driving to work on the expressway during the morning rush hour doing 70 mph when my vehicle stalled. i had to risk moving over three lanes to the off ramp without having power. i rolled up the exit ramp and pulled safely to the side of the road. i was able to restart the car but noticed both the check engine light and service light were on. the car died two additional times before i got to an auto repair shop. the repair shop told me the service code was p2111 which indicated a problem with the throttle. this was a terrible incident and i was relieved to make it safely off the road. *tr
I was driving appx 50 mph and out of the blue the car briefly sputtered and the wrench light came on. i pressed the gas but couldn't accelerate. i coasted to the side of the road and turned the engine off. when i cranked it back up everything seemed to work, and the wrench light was off. i called my ford service department from the roadside and immediately drove it in for diagnostics. they said it was the throttle body, and the part was back ordered. left car at ford because i didn't want to take the chance of this happening again on a road or highway with no place to pull off. bought the car new in 09 from this dealership and have had all scheduled maintenance done at this dealership. no mechanical issues until this one. driving habits are normal. *tr
Faulty electronic throttle body vehicle lost power twice while my wife was driving home - extremely dangerous situation. engine remained running but all power lost. had vehicle towed to ford in hopes the repair would be covered under extended powertrain warranty or via technical service bulletin. no . . . . this is astounding to me - a quick google search will tell you there are many issues with this part across multiple ford models. this was a $340 repair, for a faulty part, and one which puts people in potentially extreme danger. please conclude your investigation asap. *tr
Loss of acceleration and/or power. gas pedal did not respond. after a few scary moments was able to get vehicle to side of road. had an idea what was wrong based on a conversation with a person who described a similar situation that was do to a malfunctioning throttle body was able to get the car started and the computer reset itself, as was also described, and made it to the local ford dealership who made repairs to the throttle body. my concern is that ford is very aware of the problem and has been for sometime but is doing nothing to warn consumers of the potential of danger associated with loss of power under highway driving conditions - this needs to be done and at minimum the consumer should be compensated to some degree for what is, for all practicable purpose, faulty parts and design problems that are on going. could you imagine this situation happening to someone in their 80's - at night. *tr
I was traveling in the center lane on i-75 at 65 mph when my car lost power. the car continued to run but had no acceleration. their were cars beside and behind me. i finally was able to get off the freeway and into the emergency lane. i cut the engine off and restarted it, it acted the same. the orange wrench light came on. i decided to drive it to the next exit which was about two miles. i finally got to the exit and called the local ford dealership and was told by service people they had no way of getting the vehicle to their shop and was also told i could call or they would call for me a tow truck. i called several places and finally found a private garage that was available to come and pick me and the vehicle up. they told me while loading the vehicle on the tow truck that they had the equipment to check it out and repair it. they contacted me after checking the system out and stated that the drive by wire was bad and the throttle control body needed cleaning. to made a long story short after the tow bill, parts and labor to repair the vehicle it cost me 747.38. i feel that ford motor company should be responsible for some of the expenses if not all. they should at least have a recall and check this part for malfunction before someone gets hurt or killed from this safety issue. *tr
Throttle body malfunction. this is the second ford escape 2009 that i have had this issue. both issues occurred within a month of each other. vehicle stalls out while driving resulting in loss of all acceleration. wrench symbol comes on and have to put car in emergency lane. i can turn it off and then it restarts. this has happened multiple times and is very dangerous especially at high speeds with no emergency lane available. currently in shop replacing throttle body at ford dealer today 9/30 and cost is $400. its not worth risking my life or my wife's life. issued consumer complaint with ford. ford will not do anything to help regardless of the risk. *tr
Traveling along a rural highway, vehicle suddenly lost power and wrench light came on. i was forced to coast dangerously to a safe place to pull over, with another vehicle nearly hitting me from behind due to the sudden loss of speed. gas pedal seemed to not be working. once vehicle came to a stop, the car had an extremely rough idle. after turning the car off and restarting, the problem seemed to be reset, and gas pedal worked again, but the problem occurred again the next day, dangerously again along an interstate highway. this should be a recall - the sudden deceleration is very dangerous!!!! *tr
Pulling out from a red light car accelerated to 25 and lost all engine power. stepped on accelerator and nothing happened. coasted to a stop.in passing lane. shut off, waited 30 seconds, and restarted to drive away. traffic behind me in passing line trying to go around me unsafely. ford dealership tested and said failed throttle body. mechanic said he has seen quite a few of these. cost $358.00. thank goodness i was not on i-95 which i travel often when this happened. *tr
My wife was driving on the highway when the vehicle abruptly shut down in a high traffic metro area as an orange wrench light appeared on the dash. after resting on the shoulder for a minute and speaking with me (her husband), i asked her to try and start the vehicle again. it started back up as normal with the orange wrench light now not showing. the car ran as normal for about 10 minutes and then it happened again. she was able to get the car home safely. the next day i took a look at the car, did some research, and drove it around for awhile. the car ran fine for about 15 minutes until it occurred again. apparently the orange wrench light means there is an issue with either the power train or the throttle box. the vehicle shifts gears as normal so i am left to believe there is an issue with the throttle box (as i have read many complaints regarding this exact same issue with the 2009 ford escape). *tr
The car was driving at about 35mph and with no warning... i heard a popping sound and lost all throttle control. thank goodness i was on a back road with no other cars. this could be very dangerous if i were on the highway or i was passing a car, hauling a trailer. the car will reset after the car is off for a time and will work again for a several minutes. this is the same issue as several other of the ford products have been recalled for but my year has not been recalled, yet. i called ford to look for a recall and i was told none were listed but that she takes calls all day long for this issue and could even tell me the cost of the fix $500.00 plus. *tr
2009 ford escape 40k miles. driving down the road in normal driving conditions the vehicle started shaking slightly the idle started fluctuating and the tachometer started rapidly spiking up and down as well as a loss of acceleration. the vehicle also is stalling. shutting the engine off and restarting vehicle temporarily fixes the problem. it would appear it is the same throttle body issue everyone else is having. brought the vehicle in for service the dealer said it was not covered under warranty or my extended warranty that i purchased. *jb
[xxx] i was driving 25-30 mph when motor went to idle, gas pedal didn't work and no power to transmission. this caused me to almost wreck. my fast thinking saved my life. i was able to steer the vehicle to a safe place in a major intersection. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Running down hwy at and car stalled . made it to side of road. sat there 10 min started again and made it home. *tr
While driving on the expressway at 70 mph the rpm dropped to approx. 900rpm. pushing on the accelerator pedal didn't do anything. a indicator light on the dash came on it is the shape of a wrench. i had to pull the vehicle off the road. after i parked on the side of the road i shut off the engine and waited about 30 seconds then restarted the engine and everything was working fine. i went back onto the road and drove approx. 12 miles and it happened again. i repeated what i had done earlier and the vehicle was ok again. i got back on the road and i made it around 8 miles and i had another occurrence, again i repeated the shut off the engine on the side of the road and it again started and ran ok. then i made it home! *tr
I was on my way to work and was luckily on a frontage road when suddenly my 2009 escape wouldn't accelerate. i pushed on the gas pedal, but nothing happened. luckily i was able to coast down the hill and turn off onto a side road. the wrench symbol lit up and my car sputtered and shook. i said a prayer, waited a few minutes, started the car again, and was able to drive. i drove it about a mile down side streets to try and get it to my mechanic, but it did the same thing again and the check engine light came on. i said another prayer, started the car, turned off the a/c and was able to make it to my mechanic w/out further incident. they said that it could possibly be a few different things and since the parts are expensive, they didn't want to replace the part and not have that fix the issue, so i had to call a tow truck ($75) and have it towed to the closest ford dealership. i didn't dare try to drive it to the dealership for fear that it would die on the way there and since the dealership is located off of highway 75 in mckinney, i couldn't risk it dying on such a busy highway w/ my daughter in the car with me. the dealership called and said it's an issue w/ the electronic throttle body. my car only has a little over 58,000 miles on it. as a single divorced mom who is struggling to make ends meet, it makes me very upset that i have to spend my hard earned money ($674) on fixing something that is obviously an ongoing issue w/ this make and model. this is completely unacceptable to not have a reliable vehicle when this is a known problem. i am not a happy customer. i shouldn't have to rely on luck and have to worry and stress every time i drive my car that it will die on me. ford needs to step up and do the right thing and get this issue fixed as part of a recall b/c it is obviously unsafe and lots of ford escape owners are experiencing the same thing. *tr
My 2009 ford escape xlt (this is my third escape, and the only one that has ever caused me any problem) has never accelerated as it should, from the day i drove it new off of the lot. it has always hesitated, lurched, lunged, jerked; most frequently when accelerating from a full stop or a rolling stop. it had never "limped" until at approximately 50k miles, when the throttle body failed twice while traveling at approx. 50mph (wrench symbol lit up). after having the throttle body replaced by my dealer in late june-early july 2013, the lunging, jerking, hesitating continued. on 8/8/13, when accelerating from a rolling stop, the vehicle died while attempting a "michigan left" onto a 4-lane highway (this time the battery light and service engine lights came on). if the traffic signal for oncoming traffic had not been green, i was at risk of being struck by several vehicles traveling at rates of speed up to 70mph. i was able to let the vehicle roll back into the turn lane; turned it off and then back on; but acceleration is still not operating as it should. the rpms are all over the place. i feel as though i am driving a "death trap". this is a very urgent issue and must be addressed and repaired by ford swiftly and at no cost to the consumer. i had to pay almost $600 to have the throttle body replaced (including a rental vehicle). this is unacceptable and extremely dangerous. if this problem is not satisfactorily repaired at no cost to me when i attempt to take it to my dealer again (i'm considering having it towed because i'm so afraid to drive it), i will never purchase another ford vehicle. *tr
While driving on he interstate at 73 mph, the vehicle lost all power, warning lights came on, and although the engine appeared to be running, there was no action i could take other than to pull off the roadway, turn off the car and wait. approximately 2 minutes, i attempted to restart, which it did, but ran rough at idle. i waited a few minutes longer, restarted and it performed normally for about ten miles. then it did the exact same thing over again. last year, in my wife's 2010 ford escape, the exact same problem occurred, we took it to the local ford dealership and paid $541.00 (the requested factory assistance was refused). both problems are dangerous because they problem occurs unexpectedly, at highway speed, at idle waiting for a light to change, or when pulling into traffic. no power, pull off the road, and wait to restart. *tr
Identified as throttle bottle malfunction. driving in cruise control at 70mph and car stalls out. wrench symbol comes up and car looses all acceleration. almost had an accident and had to safely get on the curb. car continues to rev. turn car off and then restart and everything is fine. also took video of incident. this had occurred multiple times. had ford install new throttle body for $400 on 8/10/13. no more issues and ford verbally acknowledged that this was the issue. own two 2009 escapes and both have had the same issue and both have replaced throttle body. called ford consumer service and they stated they could not do anything to help the situation. *tr
As i was driving, the accelerator pedal ceased responding because power to the accelerator was lost. the car coasted to a stop on a busy highway. i was able to turn off the ignition and restart and drive in low gear a short distance. but after about 300 yards, low gear ceased to work as there was no longer any power to the accelerator. i was able to put the car in reverse and back off the road. i consider it fortunate that traffic was relatively light and i was not hit by another vehicle. i had my vehicle towed to a lincoln mercury dealer, who advised the diagnostic computer code (p2111) indicated the electronic throttle body was "bad", and there was nothing to do but replace it. they could not tell me any details as to what had caused it to go "bad", and advised they were not able to do any investigation as to what caused the malfunction. all they could do was send the old throttle body back (presumably to ford), and install a new electronic throttle body for an installed cost of $720.24. i complained directly to ford in dearborn, mi (global director, automotive safety office) by u.s. mail, and received a voicemail on 9/5/13 from [xxx] at ford executive offices ([xxx]). i returned the call and she requested i send a copy of my invoice for the throttle body installation ([xxx]). a few days later (9/9/13 i believe) she called and the bottom line was all ford would offer was a partial reimbursement of $240, which i have not yet received. she admitted no wrong (except perhaps by inference of offering a partial reimbursement) and advised ford could not guarantee that i would not experience another throttle body malfunction. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
While driving on the freeway the engine dropped to idle and throttle became no responsive. had to perform evasive maneuvers without power to safely pull over. i was lucky that i was not hit. after calling the dealer service department they informed me that it would likely need to have the throttle body replaced at over $600. this issue has become worse in only a few days and occurs at a variety of speeds. research on the web leads me to believe that this is a common issue and i am concerned for safety of drivers with all this type of vehicle. *tr
The vehicle jerked and then i started slowing down. i tried to accelerate but my vehicle continued slowing down. i pulled to the side of road & put vehicle in park, turned off the engine and restarted and was able to continue to my destination. it happened again on aug. 2nd, 3rd and 5th, 2013. when it happened on aug. 5th i was a block from home and the engine light came on that time. i turned the vehicle off and started it again & the engine light stayed on so i turned around and went home & parked it. i called my local ford dealership & they picked it up and replaced the throttle body. *tr
7/30/2013 started up after stopping at an intersection. about half a block later, i stepped on the accelerator and nothing happened. then it sputtered, the wrench light came on and the car would not move. i coasted to the side of the road, turned on hazard lights and turned it off. it started right up after a few seconds and proceeded normally. about a month later, the same thing happened driving home at night. after stopping at a stop sign, i accelerated and the car lost power, the wrench lit up and i coasted over to the side again. again, it started right up. a week later, it did the same thing in heavy traffic. i put on the hazard lights and coasted to the edge of the road. it started up, but did the same thing after a few yards. i made it very slowly into a parking lot and it stayed there until that evening. when i tried it later, it died a couple of times and i drove it home on the back streets late at night when there was no traffic. after researching the problem on line, i saw what others had done and had the throttle body replaced. that was 6 days ago. so far, so good. however, my confidence is gone and i won't be driving it in freeway traffic anytime soon. *tr
Came off freeway on multiple occasions after doing 70 mph. stopped. traffic was clear. went to accelerate and severe hesitation. have also had many times where accelerating with vehicle and it will hesitate and then surge. *tr
I was driving along when the car feels as though it's about to stall. i immediately slow down to pull over, turn the car off, let it sit for a moment then start it back up. the problem has continued to happen until i took it into a garage to find out i need a new throttle body. *tr
I am so stressed ! i was driving saturday morning july 27, 2013, on rt 287 south in morris county. nj . my husband and i were in the middle lane of this very busy highway when he stepped on the gas pedal to accelerate- our 2009 ford escape did not accelerate- it stalled out at 70 miles per hour. the wrench light lit up on the dashboard and we had to pray that we could coast over to the right lane and then to the shoulder while trucks were zooming by. we called aaa for a tow to the local garage. at local garage, vehicle was kept for 9 days, test driving it, but had no incidents because wrench light never went back on. was advised to contact ford where i purchased vehicle .i called ford.they could not see me for another week. i drove vehicle doing errands- 2 days later at a traffic light, i was making a left turn- truck sputters and dies upon acceleration. wrench light goes on again. i now have to coast to the side of a busy main road and coast into an exit only shopping center, praying i do not have a head on collision. i spoke to friend who advised me to come to this web site. lo and behold- over 350 complaints describing the same experience i had! this was clearly a defect in the model. i called ford again, begging for an earlier appointment and was told that if i wanted to rent a car at my expense i could come in. they were out of loners! ( a car dealer-really? ) i waited for appointment, meanwhile check engine light goes on permanently 2 days later. now i am petrified to drive my vehicle with the fear it is going to drop dead ! showed all info from this site to ford and was told that this was not included in warranty or a recall. it was the throttle body - it cost me $567.10 for part and labor plus tax = $606.80. i should not have to pay for this- very dangerous situation with this part faulting out! and was told there is no recall at this time. i am angry! *tr
Car did not die, basically jumped a bit and would not go over 2 or 3 mph as i pressed gas pedal- wrench check light came on- had to turn off and restart - this happened again 2 times yesterday 8/9/2013-- no accident as of yet but extremely dangerous. *tr
I was driving on a two lane rt, speed limit 55mph at 9pm, no lighting along rt, accelerating to keep up speed going up a hill, the car started to slow down. pulling over to my right (off the road ) putting on my flashers, was now at a complete stop was hit in rear left doing damage to my car and the car that hit me.the car that hit me left the seen of the accident. no warning this was going to happen.towed car to a ford dealer and had fixed, internal throttle body failure, lucky to be alive. *tr
Vehicle suddenly started decelerating at a rapid pace. i was driving 60 mph, and the gas pedal suddenly seemed to stop sending gas to the engine. i had to pull over and coast to a stop. this was not covered by my lifetime warranty and is going to cost me over $600 in towing, parts and labor. *tr
